When Judge Jules began weaving Umek's "Gatex" into his radio sets two years ago, the techno community collectively gasped. At the heart of their whining wasn't that bespectacled clones were going to start invading their dank after-hour dives, but that one of their celebrated own would be lost to the masses. Though 28-year-old Slovenian Uros Umek has produced a prolific amount of work, on his debut artist album Neuro, the DJ slides safely under the radar. Fist-pounding anthems like those on the Zeta Reticula EPs are replaced by thought-provoking anti-anthems. Opener "Engram" and later "Neurotrotter" evoke an Orbital-like familiarity with their delicate off-center harpsichord-infused harmonies. "Psvedo" brings out an electro flare with its hoard of soaked cotton synth strings. Elsewhere, things charge through gothic turf with guttural vocals on "Neuropa Humbug." On Neuro, Umek continues to fall left of predictability, a strategy that will continue to serve him well.
