A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

A Darkened homage.......2004-12-31
On first listening to this album, I was apprehensive. I am a fan of the Darkness, and believe them to be a ground breaking band. Back around the late 70's, music took a tangent. It went off into a strange land where fully grown adults wore clothes too big for them, and listened endlessly to pre-fabricated music. The Darkness are taking up from where the likes of Queen and AC/DC left off.
I was worried that the combination of the emotional strings could not quite leash the power and soul of The Darkness; that classic players could not translate thier power. On hearing the album, I realised something: Much alike permission to land, this too is ground breaking. It is the soft carresing hand of classical music reaching out to the arms of today. A bridge between the expert fingers of the voilin to the guitar. In more plainer terms, I was wrong.
The take on it is absolutely fantastic. Not only does it ensoul permission to land with the sensual sounds of the strings, but also manages to keep with the fun and excitement that The Darkness have brought to modern day music. An absolute must for any Darkness fan, or anyone wanting some real fun put back into thier ears. I myself can turn on any one of these pieces and float away into another level of adoration for music. This album truly shows the abilities music has to move you, it shows how music can be enjoyed and shows a true talent I have not seen for a very, very long time.

Soul Vibrations.......2002-12-12
About two years ago I found a compilation disc with a song titled Soul Vibration as the opening track. It was by a group I'd never heard of called J-Walk. I searched for the album that might include this single, but it was no good. I couldn't find anyone or anything that yet knew about this group. Then I started to read about how this was one of the hottest dance tracks around and I couldn't help but be annoyed by the fact that I still couldn't find more about them. Finally in 2002 I found the album at CDNOW/Amazon and was able to order what I had searched for.
The album is worth getting in my opinion simply based on Soul Vibration (slightly altered on the album), but after listening to it you'll find that another single, French Letter is equally as good. These two songs are two of the best I've heard in the ever-growing downtempo or chillout genre. My only reason for not giving this album five stars is that some of the tracks tend to have a more produced sound as opposed to some of the other tracks with rough mixes (that I generally prefer more). Soul Vibration bounces off the 70's groove tip while French Letter has a more 60's psychedelic feel. The rest of the tracks include guest artists, in which case some are better than others, but if you're into the budding downtempo chillout genre, I strongly recommend this album.
