This is a wonderful CD. A variety of songs and tempos. I am a new jazz listener and I highly reccomend her.

4 out of 5 stars surprised.......2006-03-22

i bought this cd because i was looking for the original version of feeling good that i heard by michael buble. after listening to it for some time, i think the buble version is a little better. the main thing that surprised me about this cd is the song "sinner man". it's a 10 minute song, but man is it good!

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking.......2005-09-29

Oh how I adore Nina Simone. Her voice is earthy, delicate, transcendent. My favorite song on this album is Feeling Good. This may actually be my favorite song ever. You may also recognize a few songs on this album from the Verve Remixed compilations, specifically "Sinnerman" and "Black is the Color Of My True Love's Hair." Nina Simone has influenced so many musicians and so many musical genres over the years with her impeccable style she truly deserves a place in an American music hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars Compact Jazz Is A Classic Compilation.......2005-04-14

I absolutely LOVE this CD! I couldn't wait to get it in the mail. I specifically bought it for one song, "Feeling Good". I heard a snippet of this song a long while back while watching a commercial for the HBO series "Six Feet Under". I knew I'd heard the song before and then "Point Of No Return" starring Bridget Fonda came on television. There was that song again. In fact this CD features some of the music requested by the character in that movie. So I ordered the CD and to say I am pleased is an understatement.

There is such a diverse collection of songs on here for any type of mood you're in. I will admit it took me getting a little bit older to really appreciate the clarity, tone, and spirit of Ms. Simone's music but better late than never. I agree with all of the previous reviewer's thoughts. I thought there was no way I would listen to Sinnerman, a 10 minute song, but I couldn't turn it off. This is not a CD that you can just put on while doing a whole bunch of other things. The music commands you to stop, pay attention and listen. You'll feel it in your bones. I can't say enought about this CD, just buy it, I guarantee you'll have it in heavy rotation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums........2006-02-21

Most people know Astrud Gilberto from her collaboration with Stan Getz that launched her career. "The Girl From Impanema" is included here, but is by no means the best song on the CD. This is one of those CDs that it would be hard to name the best song, as almost every one is a candidate. Among the compilation CDs that I have seen for her, I feel that this is the best sampling of her work.

For those of you not familiar with anything other than "The Girl from Impanema", do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It is perfect for informal dinner parties, or just to soothe your mind after a hard day at work. You will become enchanted with her and wonder why you have never heard any of her other songs. Also, I defy anyone to be in a bad mood after making it even halfway through this disk. This is one of my favorite CDs and I'm sure it will become one of yours as well.

5 out of 5 stars Essential! Desert-Island CD Material!.......2005-10-22

This is a timeless classic - - the music is beautiful, and Astrud Gilberto's voice is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars CELESTIAL VOICE.......2001-06-21

Her phrasing, her swing, her angel-soft voice, in portuguese; The hues of her tone of voice paint the most wonderful colors in the canvas of music and beyond. Only Elis Regina and perhaps one or two more Brazilian singers have gotten up there where she is and where she takes us everytime she sings. If you like bossa nova, jazz, or brazilian music in general, this is a must have and your just one click away.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing..........1999-12-26

Astrud's voice elevates me above anything and everything that's bothering me. The simplicity and innocence of this music takes me into a dream world. I can't stop listening to tracks like "Girl...", "Agua de Beber", "Summer Samba", "Dindi"... all of them! Every track on this album is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars The Happy and Luxurious Voice of Brazil, the voice of Astrud.......1999-06-09

This compilation represents the ticket to perhaps the wealthiest voice of Bossa Nova...listen to Astrud and your senses and vision will never be clearer. I have been struck with the tender and crisp happiness of Astrud's voice for over thirty years now...and there is never a week that goes by without my 'fix' of Astrud's happy and mature voice!. This particular set , although quickly remastered, is enough to lure the one-time listener into the seductive and glamorous world that is Astrud Gilberto! Verve Records, Creed Taylor and others obviously knew that Astrud's voice honored the timeless and priceless songs of Bossa Nova...and this CD provides it all to the fortunate listener!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great NewWave/Punk.......2006-10-03

This music has some of the rough, up-in-your-face quality of Patti Smith ("Easter" "Horses") and of course the Sex Pistols. The more mainstream, pop melodies are not integrated as much with the rancor as they are on "9." However, this gives you something almost as good, as the juxtapositions are generally very well executed. The catharses are more simplistic, but often more freeing. Primitive, prowling, "Gang of Four" rhythms blossom into the fragrant flowers you associate with U2.

"Compact Disc" has the peculiar distinction of having a lot of great dance rhythms and melodic riffs woven into Johnny's otherwise insane warbling. The guitar work is sometimes jarring and overdone, though some of it is remarkably fast and pure.

Of particular interest are the beautiful melodies on the second and last tracks. On "Ease," Johnny confides, "What makes you happy, your misery." These two PIL albums rank right up there with the Beatles, Stones, Bowie, etc. that made monumental music from the grist of this statement.

1 out of 5 stars never recieved.......2006-02-22

I initially only wanted to order "compact disc",by "public image limited" but amazon had a deal if I also orderd "flowers of romance", by the same band so I thought why not, I orderd both c.d.s' but I only recieved "flowers of romance",and not the "compact disc".I paid for both and only recieved the one.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite PiL album...........2005-11-22

This has always been my favorite PiL album because it hits harder than all of the others. Lydon's earlier work may have been more experimental, but this album is very political.I saw them open for INXS(funny eh?)back in 1987 and about half of the songs they performed were from this album. It was one of the best concert experiences I have ever had because the energy that was put into the music was astounding.

Rise is the most famous song from this album, but Bags and Home are just as good and just as political. The guitar playing is great and the bass is very heavy throughout. In my opinion this is the last 'great' album that Lydon made.

3 out of 5 stars This is where it all went wrong.......2005-10-19

PiL's John Lydon managed to get entirely lost, after the great music and earlier bandmembers were well out of the picture. 'This is what you want...', still has its moment of irony and one can hear Lydon's sneer at people and matters around him. With Album/Compact Disc he started to lose his roots in search for more. Even with a bunch of great musicians around him, he couldn't find anything more than a just above average rock album.

That was something he did NOT want to become. Some years later some girly backgroundsingers had to accompany his pityful attempts. Lydon was lost and was ever since unrecognizably bad. Even these musicians here on this album couldn't make him recognize he was losing track. Nice try...a heartless result ! And unfortunately much worse was still to come from Mr. Lydon.

PS. Let me be kind enough to thank him for his wonderful and inspiring early works. Full of great grooves and spooky moments.

5 out of 5 stars Rise Above It.......2005-10-03

OK, it must be acknowledged that PIL's output has been patchy. However, with Compact Disc they were on top form. The single, Rise, is justifiably (relatively) well known and the album is worth it for that track alone. However, the rest of it pretty well lives up to the standard set by Rise - no real duff tracks on it. There's a force, passion and energy to this record that, for my money, they've never bettered. Own this and "Metal Box" and that's really all the PIL you need.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent bluegrass! CD buying tip. . ........2004-09-25

I wanted to follow up about the compilation contents.
If you buy "The Bluegrass Compact Disc" and "The Bluegrass Compact Disc, Vol.2" you will have the first FOUR volumes originally released on vinyl with only FIVE tracks missing in total (about %10). Not bad for much less than half the cost.

The missing tracks are:
(Volume 1: 02. We Can't Be Darlings Anymore),(Volume 2: 02. We May Meet Again Someday,05. Back to the Cross),(Volume 3: 11. Wall Around Your Heart),(Volume 4: 09. I Might Take You Back Again)

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2004-01-06

This and the volume 2 CD in the series draw from the four LPs released in the early 1980s under the name "The Bluegrass Album", etc. The LPs and this CD represent a monumental accomplishment, in several respects. The repertoire on this CD ranges from Bill Monroe's classical instrumental "Cheyenne" to Jim Croce's originally non-bluegrass "Age", and there isn't a weak tune here. Everything is squarely in the bluegrass tradition established by Monroe and Scruggs, yet, more than fifty years after the phrase "bluegrass music" came into being, and more than twenty after these cuts were recorded, every one is fresh-sounding and stimulating. And while there's no shortage of star instrumentalists here (Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, and Jerry Douglas are certainly among the all-time greats), this is definitely a team effort; the ensemble playing is tight, and the harmonies are wonderful.

This CD and the others in the series serve equally well as a wonderful introduction to bluegrass music at its best for a neophyte to the genre or as a roundup of bluegrass classics for the connoisseur.

5 out of 5 stars The best true bluegrass of the era!.......2003-05-06

In the 1980s, just when everybody was starting to roll their eyes, throw up their hands, and declare that the too-perfect, newgrass scene had lost touch with its roots, guitarist Tony Rice organized this crackerjack ensemble, mysteriously known as the Bluegrass Album Band, and cranked out album after album of the good stuff. Banjo plunker J.D. Crowe, dobro whiz Jerry Douglas, fiddler Bobby Hicks, gospel bandleader doyle Lawson and bassist Todd Phillips were his cohorts, and their four albums rank as some of the best truegrass recordings of the decade, steeped in the lore of the elders. Gospel tunes with extraordinary vocal harmonies comingle with dazzling, lively picking, evoking Bill Monroe and all his followers, and showing quite clearly that the modern bluegrass crowd still has the goods. This CD reissue only samples from the BAB volumes 1-4; I strongly urge you to track down the original LPs, since a lot of great material has been left by the wayside... Also, it's lamentable that someone felt the need to "update" the band's otherwise-delightful name for the digital age, to the misleading "Bluegrass Compact Disc," which makes most folks assume this is some kind of compilation album. Note to Rounder: a CD with several songs on it can still be called an album; the origial name was way cooler. Anyway, this is a grrrreat collection, well worth tracking down and playing over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC traditional bluegrass - expertly done!.......1999-01-11

The Bluegrass Album Band does a tremendous job of taking some of the best old, traditional bluegrass songs - and adds a modern smoothness that only improves on the best. I highly recommend this CD, and this band, to any bluegrass enthusiast.

Greatest-hits collections often deprive the listener of the chance to experience an artist's true scope of talent. Not so with Steve Miller. His strength has always been more in crafting an occasional blast of FM-radio heaven rather than a dozen solid album tracks. Greatest Hits 1974-78 chronicles the best singles from Miller's most successful years, after he veered from Haight-Ashbury bluesy trippiness to more accessible blues-based pop-rock. There are the slippery grooves of "The Joker" and "Fly Like an Eagle," and there's the air-guitar-beckoning riff-rock of "Take the Money and Run," "Jungle Love," "Rock 'n Me," and "Jet Airliner." Don't expect groundbreaking art, expect references to the "pompatus of love" and instant gratification. Requisite listening at the classic-rock keg party. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Neal Weiss

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-21

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
This is a rather fine example of what a greatest hits CD should be. A bunch of really good songs with not much in the way of "filler".
Tracks 1,2,3,4,8,9 & 11 are the popular classics you'll know from the radio. (Tracks 6,12 & 13 aren't that popular, but they grow on you). So you get $7 worth of essential tracks for the current Amazon price of $8. Not bad. (You can get each of these songs individually from iTunes and save yourself $1). Two other good songs from Steve Miller, that fall outside the 1974-1978 range, are "Abracadabra" and "Living in the USA". Don't go and pay $14 for the "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD just to get these two additional songs. I'd buy each of them on iTunes for $1, if available.
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Fly like an Eagle, let you spirit set you free........2007-06-10

A wonderful CD of some of Mr. Miller's best tunes. This is a staple for those times when you want to kick back and relax, and just fade into your memories. Super tunes.

5 out of 5 stars TAKES ME BACK.......2007-05-14

I LOVE IT. I LISTEN AT HOME OR IN THE CAR . IT HAS ALL OF THEIR GREAT SONGS AND IT IS SO MUCH FUN.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Outdated Compilation.......2007-03-12

The Steve Miller Band produced some remarkable pop rock songs in the 1970s. They were sticky, short and sweet tracks that bore the mark of ingenuity and economy. They didn't take up a lot of your time, but they songs stayed in your mind for a long, long time. Indeed, many of these are FM staples down to this day. This 1978 collection is filled with the gems of their mid-70s work. How do the songs rate?

Swingtown- It begins with a fade-in. The bassline we hear becomes the backbone of the song. Harmonies fill the song, as do catchy melodies. An excellent way to kick off the compilation.

Jungle Love- A classic. Just thinking about "Jungle Love" is driving me crazy.

Take the Money and Run- A short little gem that's one my favourite SMB tracks. The off-kilter drum intro is great, as is the zany guitar work. The lyrics themselves tell the story of a robbing couple and the sheriff who's out to get them. Goofy fun all around.

Rock 'N Me- "Keep on 'a rockin' me baby" says it all. Memorable guitar riff, too.

Serenade- Not the best song, but good by most standards.

True Fine Love- Cute ballad with a nice little swing to it.

The Stake- A slow-burning pop classic.

The Joker- This is from 1973, so its inclusion is dubious. But guess what? The song is one of SMB's most enduring and pivotal tracks. If "Maurice" followed by a guitar-made whistling-like sound doesn't ring a bell, there's something wrong with you.

Fly Like an Eagle- A mellow paean to freedom embossed in some fine electronic atomospherics. One SMB's other key songs.

Threshold- Not really a song at all. It's an intro to...

Jet Airliner- Pop rock about being a celebrity. Great chorus.

Dance, Dance, Dance- More country than anything else. Good thing they stuck it at the end, because I always skip this cold fish.

Winter Time- Doesn't do anything for me.

Wild Mountain Honey- Dull.

Now, as you might've noted, a great many of these tracks garnered quite a bit of praise from me. That's because the music itself is quite awesome. However, this set does have some weaknesses:

*Nothing (aside from "The Joker") outside the 74-78 range. That means you don't get any of SMB's early classics or the early 80s cheesball "Abracadabra" track.

*Original issue CD, which means the sound quality is rather low.

*Not a lot of songs. Given that this compilation was originally released on an LP, we can understand why we don't get that much music.

*Better compilations are out there. "Young Hearts" offers more songs than this, and the sound is better. BUT,if you're looking for a concise overview of hits, you might be interested in this one. If you down mind less tracks and low audio quality, this compilation will work for you. It'll probably cost you less, too.

Overall, this compilation was great for its time. But in this day and age, it seems rather outdated. Fantastic tunes, though!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is music for the millions !!!.......2007-03-17

This CD entitled Music For A Bachelor's Den contains excellent numbers from the late 1950s and early 1960s when Latin dance crazes were taking the country by storm, Cadillacs had fins and milk came in bottles. Men loved the new "Hi-Fi" records and record players; they entertained and romanced their women to many of these tunes.

The CD opens with "Once In A While" performed by Terry Snyder and his band. The musical arrangement makes excellent use of the percussion and some sounds come out the left speaker while others come out the right--this took advantage of the new stereophonic record players of the day. The xylophone adds a lot to the arrangement; too. The Latin beat is blended with the sound of a big band to produce a very special, memorable effect. Impressive!

"Love For Sale" by The Arthur Lyman Group follows and this number does not disappoint. The percussion, drums and xylophone carry the tune as the piano playing enhances the beauty of this track. This may be from the 1950s but it still sounds great to me today! Romantic, seductive and engaging all at once, "Love For Sale" is a highlight of this CD.

The George Shearing Quintet makes a contribution to the CD with their medley number entitled "Medley: As Long As I Live/Let's Live Again." The two numbers are joined together quite smoothly and the piano shines in the arrangement. "Like Young" by Linda Lawson provides a non-instrumental track for this CD; Linda's voice is rich, warm and vibrant. The arrangement with its use of the percussion and horn enhances the seductive and romantic flavor of this song. Excellent!

Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra perform the "Theme From 'Route 66;'" and the California based John Buzon Trio masterfully perform "Ill Wind" with the organ and the horns carrying most of the melody. The Arthur Lyman Group performs a second number on this CD with a heavenly version of "Yellow Bird." The xylophone, guitar and Latin beat give "Yellow Bird" an unforgettable quality. "Yellow Bird" enjoyed great popularity when it was released; and now you have a chance to see why! Moreover, The Dick Hyman Trio performs "Moritat (A Theme From The Threepenny Opera);" you just might recognize this as the melody for "Mack The Knife!"

One reviewer writes that the "Theme From 'The Honeymooners' (Melancholy Serenade)" does not match the melody used by The Honeymooners television show--and they are right. The version on this CD uses much more of an orchestral approach to this ballad; but I believe it remains beautiful nonetheless.

The CD ends fittingly with "Around The World (From 'Around The World In 80 Days).'" This ballad gets the orchestral treatment complete with a large strings section, flutes, piano and harp. You will enjoy the beauty of this final track.

The liner notes offer an essay by Paul Phillips and you get the song credits, too. The art work for the CD reflects forethought as well.

I highly recommend this CD for people who enjoyed this music when it first came out on record albums; and people who enjoy "lounge music" will thrill to every minute of this CD. The romantic flavor of each track is greatly enhanced by the often simultaneous Latin beat to produce a very exceptional effect that I rarely enjoy these days.

May you get this CD and enjoy it as much as I do. ¡Viva música!

5 out of 5 stars Classic lounge tunes.......2004-03-10

In the '90's when lounge music suddenly became a musical fad, the marketplace was flooded with CD's trying to exploit the new-found popularity of the genre. Many of these CD's were a mish-mosh of anything that could vaguely be deemed "lounge" or easy listening and might bring in a few bucks to the owners. Here, in this volume from Steve Hoffman and the now defunct DCC Compact Classics, the genre gets an intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable treatment. Not only are some of these tunes representative of the "best" of the lounge tunes of the era but half of them are charting singles that will be recognized and immediately appreciated by the listener. Among the quintessential favorites here are the exotic sounding "Quiet Village" from Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman's ethereal "Yellow Bird". Other tunes spanning the diverse nature of the genre included here are Victor Young's "Around The World" from the movie and Jimmy Dorsey's big band last hurrah, "So Rare". While the track count (15) leans to the meager side, this collection has more great "lounge" music then many similarly-themed collections with twice the running time. Considering the vintage of the sources, production is first-rate with all but three tracks (12-14) in wide stereo and full-spectrum sound. Liner notes, while brief, pretty well tie up the package with backround notes and a bit of nostalgic rumination. If you need only a single sample of what this music encompassed both then and now, this is the one to get. An absolutely superb little package.

4 out of 5 stars Will take you back to a different time........2000-01-27

This cd takes me back to a time when my friends dad had an actual Hi Fi player. They were just new at the time, but did they ever sound great. The type of music during this era was exactly as it is on this cd. First off this has a great sound. The songs are very exotic, early 60s type lounge. "Route 66" takes me right out on the highway and into the desert. "Once in a While" really expoits the stereo picture as it was definitely just coming out at that time. The theme from the Honeymooners, Sunset Strip, Wow...... Martinis and early 60s furniture, bamboo chairs, and wall lamps all come to mind when listening to this cd. Definitely an odd, likeable collection of rare gems. It will standout in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars How good is this?.......2007-04-14

The Jam never made it in America and were completely unknown to me until reviewers started namechecking them in seemingly every third Green Day review circa 1994. Discovering them is a richly rewarding experience and this is probably the best place to do it (although "Greatest Hits" has a very similar track list and is more readily and cheaply availible). The record starts in '77 with the Jam as a razor-sharp, mod-influenced punk band and follows the band as growth and experimentation leaves them in almost neo-soul territory by the time they split in the mid 80s. Along the way, one can revel in Paul Weller's genius songwriting and the band's crisp playing--especially Bruce Foxton's spunky bass.

Even 30 years on, every track virtually explodes with tunefulness and energy. I can think of few bands EVER who are simply this much fun to listen to and whose tunes have stayed so fresh for so long. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Much All You Need.......2005-09-29

The Jam are one of my favorite bands. They're also largely a singles band, something fans more rabid than I are loathe to admit. With some bands, it's worth the while to be a completist. With The Jam, this CD should be more than enough for anyone. I can see why the vinyl geeks would complain that, say, Eaton Rifles is from a concept album, but who really cares? It stands fine on its own. The songs on here were picked in such a way that you get the best combination of the band's great musicianship and Paul Weller's lyricism. If you appreciate Punk Rock, Mod Beat, Britpop, or just well played, energetic, tuneful music, this is an essential buy.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Modern Rock.......2003-01-25

Great music. The best of the Jam's music is summarized on this CD and on "The Jam Collection". It's a great set of songs, played with passion and precision.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best single-disc Jam compilation available.......2002-06-28

Here's yet another misunderstood relic from the early days of the CD format that drives many folks into conniptions. What many of today's music buyers don't seem to realize is that CD pressing plants initially could not guarantee that discs longer than 60-65 minutes in length would play properly on all CD players. Combined with the trappings of the industry's own hype (which touted the CD's 74-minute storage capacity), labels tried wherever possible to make sure all albums released on the CD format would fit on a single disc.

Thus, Snap! was "re-compiled from the double album and cassette...and omit[ted] eight tracks to make it suitable for a single compact disc." To differentiate it from the complete album and cassette editions, the title was changed to Compact Snap.

Compact Snap - which was my proper introduction (apart from the videos for "Absolute beginners", "Start!", and "A town called malice", which MTV used to play in its early days) to the band - is still the best of the single-disc Jam compilations I've encountered. I've never been all that fond of "News of the world" or "Funeral pyre", but the rest of the set is untouchable, hitting many of the band's highlights - among them "In the city", "Going underground", "That's entertainment", "Start!", "A town called malice", and "Beat surrender" - while chronicling the progress of the band from its beginnings in the midst of the punk era to the more overt soul influences of its later records.

From the guitar riff that opens "In the city" to the pure joy that is "Beat surrender", Compact Snap reveals The Jam to be easily the most vital band of its era. Whether your preference is for the former, the latter, or somewhere in between, there's no denying the band's energy and passion - two things that no band should be without.

Completists should note that the version of "Funeral pyre" included here is a remix, and that the demo version of "That's entertainment" differs from the demo found on the Direction, Reaction, Creation box set.

4 out of 5 stars Too compact.......2002-05-08

"Snap", in its original LP issue, was perhaps one of the best group compilations ever assembled, encapsulating the Jam's journey from Who-influenced punk to the wonderful admixture of ska and soul that marked their final years. I can mark my changing tastes via the four sides of the record, having been in my youth a Side 1 advocate (that's where all the punk ones were, from "In the City" to "Mr. Clean," if I recall correctly) to now, when i'm a Side 3 and 4 man (roughly "Going Underground" to "Beat Surrender.")

Unfortunately, this all-too-compact version of Snap diminishes the sense of having the Jam's entire career to peruse. Too many important songs were axed. Here's what's missing: the great, desperate "Away from the Numbers" and "Billy Hunt", the gorgeous "English Rose" and "Butterfly Collector", "Thick as Thieves"! merely one of their finest songs, as is the deleted "Tales from the Riverbank". Other victims were "Man in the Cornershop" and "Mr. Clean."

There's too much great music on this abridged "Snap" for it to be marked down too severely, but it's a shame that is all we now have. With the passing of the LP edition, thus went the only economical way to enjoy the Jam in full-- now you either choose riches (the numbingly extensive [money] five-disc import box set) or famine (this inadequate set, and the other single-disc compilations that all miss the boat in some way).

A reissued 2-disc Snap, with all the original tracks restored, plus supplemented if needs be with the few gems left off the original Snap (Boy About Town, etc), would be the best of all worlds-- one day, maybe.

Even darker than their purple-hued debut, the Doors' follow-up, Strange Days, closed 1967 with an ominous flourish. Highlighted mostly by short, radio-friendly tunes such as the bluesy "Love Me Two Times" and the cabaret-style "People Are Strange" and featuring a smattering of edgy recitations ("Horse Latitudes") and smoky rockers ("My Eyes Have Seen You"), the album features a centerpiece that was another ambitious extended track, "When the Music's Over." On it, Morrison railed at everything from organized religion to pollution, and his rallying cry--"We want the world, and we want it now!"--became a call to arms for the counterculture rising up around the band. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars Baby Gonna Drown Tonight.......2007-05-12

This is The Doors darkest album. Thats saying alot. Some people also say this is there best album. It could be. This was when The Doors were at the height of there musical careers. The critics loved them, the market loved them, everybody loved them. This album has everything. Love(Love Me Two Times),lust(You Lost Little Girl),mystery(Strange Days,People Are Strange),chaos(Horse Latitudes),and poetry(When The Music's Over). Even some drug music(My Eyes Have Seen You,). There are some truly amazing moments in this album. From the genius journey of When The Music's Over to the quick mood change from Horse Latitudes to Moonlight Drive. It's not perfect, but it's damn close. It's haunting, magical, wonderful. The Doors first album was an introduction. This album shows the dark side of The Doors. There are many things to find beyond this door.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Days.......2007-04-24

The Doors-Strange Days *****

Darker then the bands purple hued debut album could not be more true. Strange Days is simply one of the darkest and greatest albums in all of rock n' roll history. The band came close with their debut but Strange Days is where The Doors sealed the deal as the greatest band in all of the psycadelic genre of rock n' roll. All bets were off when this was released no more then six months after their emphamous debut. Anything experimental was a must on this record. Paul Rothchilds amazing production is at its stunning best here. Strange Days sounds more like it was recorded in 1997 rather then in 1967. The sound is big and phenomonal musician ship sure helped out. Robby Krieger played some of the best guitar of his career, while John Densmore became more experimental on this album then the first, and Ray Manzerek laid down some outstanding keyboard playing here, proving he is in fact the king of the keyboards. Jim "The Lizard King" Morrison showcases some of his most powerful vocals here, and his lyrics are as we all know are amazing, a true poet in a rock gods body.

The album opens with the errie title track 'Strange Days' which is not only the perfect way to start the album, but also one of the bands very best songs. The dark keyboards set the stage for the rest of the album. 'You're Lost Little Girl' is very out there and a hard track to describe much less define, one that honestly has to be heard to appreciate. 'Love Me Two Times' as we all know is one of the greatest songs of all time. The guitar is phenomenal, and Morrisons vocals are top notch here. 'Unhappy Girl' is an amazing song. It some how manages to mesh the bright happy go lucky Beachboys/early Beatles/Supremes sound of the 1960's with a darker twist to make one of the bands most creative creations. 'Horse Latitudes' is mearly just a Morrison poem set to music. Mainly just spoken word, but makes for a very interesting track none the less. 'Moonlight Drive,' the very song Jim Morrison sung for Manzerek in hopes if getting him to start a band with himself. Some impressive slide guitar work from Krieger makes for one classic song. 'People Are Strange' is yet another rock n' roll classic. The movie "The Lost Boys" used the song as their theme. One of the most errie songs in all of rock n' roll and also one of the best. 'My Eyes Have Seen You' may be a bit repetitive but it is one of the very best songs the band ever did. The guitar is out of this world and Morrisons vocals are the best here that they are on the entire album. Fantastic song. 'I Cant See Your Face In My Mind' is the weakest song on the album, and really the only weak song on the album. It is just missing something. But still really not a bad song, just not memorable. 'When The Musics Over' is quite simply one of the very best songs ever written and recorded in all of music...ever! 'When The Musics Over' is to Strange Days what 'The End' was to the bands selftitled debut The Doors. Robby Krieger plays the best guitar of his career on this song, and the solo alone is worth every penny of the album cost. The lyrics are maybe Morrisons best. The whole band plays together as if they are on one eleven minute acid trip, which makes for an amazingly interestingly never boring yet very long song. The Doors couldnt have recorded a better song to end the album with. The song may be teh very best song to ever end a rock n' roll album.

The Doors was an amazing album, and L.A. Woman was better then that, but Strange Days is easily the singlegreatest thing The Doors ever recorded. Even if they had stayed together and Morrison had not went to the otherside, they might have come close but would have never topped this. Esentially one of the greatest albums in all of musical history, Stranges Days by The Doors is one of those albums that changed the world and is esential to every music collection along with Srg. Pepper, Kind Of Blue, Dark Side Of The Moon, Highway 61 Revisited, and Nevermind.

4 out of 5 stars Good but uneven followup.......2007-01-16

After their maiden album that was so great, The Doors' Strange Days is not as strong as their first. There's solid stuff on it but it runs out of steam in the last three songs. The album's magnum opus (When the music's over) is too long for its own good.

Standout tracks:

-Strange Days.
-You're lost little girl.
-Love me two times.
-Unhappy girl.
-Moonlight drive.
-People are strange.

I give it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Doors album.......2007-01-10

I've always taken the Doors with a grain of salt--I love the cosmopolitan influences that contribute to their unique, dark fusion of hard rock and psychedelia, and I really love Jim Morrison's inimitable baritone voice. However, I've found Morrison to be a constantly overrated lyricist who had a few transcendental moments but produced equal amounts of uninspired, shallow, and atrociously-rhymed lyrics, often obviously choosing predictable rhymes or choosing a word that doesn't fit the idea just because it rhymes. However, I do enjoy their music very much, and I find that Strange Days (along with their debut) is the album I come back to most often.

Any radio-listener will recognize several songs--the gnarly blues-guitar riff and hot harpsichord of "Love Me Two Times," the sing-song paranoia of "People are Strange," and the trippy hard rock of "Strange Days." Unlike a large number of Doors albums, though, the rest of Strange Days is pretty uniformly strong as well. From slower, jazzier numbers like "You're Lost Little Girl" to the driving rock of "My Eyes Have Seen You," to the downright spooky "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind," the album contains strong examples of the Doors' trademark musical mishmash of jazz, classical, blues and psychedelic influences. "Horse Latitudes" is also one of the most compelling and creepy piece of Jim Morrison's poetry ever recorded. Finally, the album's closer, "When the Music's Over" is an instant epic classic. Its deliciously funky organ riff intro gives away to a classic Morrison howl and some classical episodes of scary imagery and dark hippie ethos.

As usual, the flamenco-inspired guitar is lively and varied, the jazz-inflected drumming is spot-on, and the keyboards are virtuosic and range across several instruments and styles. The Doors may have hit hardest on their debut, but with Strange Days they showed their staying power and even improved their formula. Highly recommended for radio fans of the Doors looking to dig a bit deeper.

4 out of 5 stars So strange.......2006-12-29

There are some cuts that hold up better than you'd expect and others that make one glad we've reached the digital age where we can hit a button and skip to the next track. Still, all in all, this is a fine upgrade if you're still listening to vinyl. Come on, Jim Morrison died for you, spend for the record companies that exploited him.

Jackson is my favorite singer-songwriter. I tell anyone I discuss music with the he is my "Lyrical God." An amazing poet/writer and musician. My favorite song is "Bright Baby Blues," which he initally change the words to once he recorded the song. This is a great album displaying his brilliance.

Jackson Browne fans know of the personal losses for Jackson. Losses of wife and closests of friends.Things that leave you at a loss for words ..But not for Jackson.Catharsis comes to mind for myself and possibly J. This release and with other songs (for a dancer) have helped myself, and others deal with personal loss . I thank him for that. BUT this is a review so.. As a loong time J.B. fan and fellow so.cal. oldie its my favorite with craig Russ,David, etc. Just listen to 'yer bright baby blues' Brilliant I think It's one of J's personal favorites too because he has played it at every concert i've heard GET THIS C D ONE OF HE BEST FROM ONE OF THE BEST

5 out of 5 stars Browne at his best (again).......1999-02-21

Browne continues his survey of the human condition in "The Pretender". His band really kicks it into gear after their subdued, yet stellar, performance on his previous album, "Late for the Sky", and contributes more to the overall quality of this work than on any JB album to date. I wonder how many of us can relate to songs like, "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate" or "Daddy's Tune"? "The Fuse" is a wonderful track, both in its instrumentation and its lyrics. This CD doesn't seem to suffer from the muting of Brown's voice and some of the instruments which seemed to plague "Late for the Sky", and thus I give it a five-star rating! Buy it!

From the first track to the last this cd is great listening. Mr. Prysock's singing style is in the Sinatra, Epstein, Sammy Davis Jr., Brook Benton vein. Very smooth and mellow with timeless love songs and wonderful musical arrangements. I miss this kind of music today. This is fire in the fireplace, glass of wine and the one you love evening music.
