Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27
This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).
prince fan.......2007-05-24
i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.
Greatest Album!.......2007-04-12
I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.
Prince Reigns!.......2007-03-30
What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!
Start to finish one of the best albums of all time!.......2007-03-10
What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?
One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.
My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.
Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.
Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

Left Out.......2006-09-16
Liked the album & movie but in the soundtrack they should have dropped Don Henley's "She On The Zoom " ( weak song) for Berlin's "No More Words" which was in the film but not included on the soundtrack. Well, at the very least should have added the song to it.
80's Soundtrack.......2006-08-16
Very good 80's soundtrack covering a lot of different styles of music from that era. Features the very hard to find Madonna song "Gambler" I don't know why this song was never a radio hit, maybe because the opening of the song sounds a lot like "Maniac" from Flashdance.
Standout track: Change by John Waite featuring a young Patty Smythe from Scandal on background vocals.
Good for memories.......2006-08-13
I like it because it always pumped me up when I was young. Lunatic Fringe was a great song to ride and run to.

Journey does a great song in Only the young.
I finally found Lunatic Fringe! It's on the radio all the time and it drove me crazy when I didn't know what it was.
Get it; very good soundtrack.

This 1974 Norman Jewison film may have been a critical misstep, but some fans actually preferred it to Broadway's rock spectacle. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also includes the pretty "Could We Start Again, Please," composed for the stage version, and sung here by the original LP's Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Elliman. Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas), meanwhile, have spent two decades on the road, recreating their roles night after night, although they have to now be at least two decades older than Jesus was at the Crucifixion. --Bill Holdship

Jesus Christ Superstar.......2007-07-09
The first time I heard the music was watching the movie when it first came out. I was on a submarine transiting from Faslane, Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a liberty rest after a Northern Atlantic patrol.
We (the crew) almost wore the sprockets off the 16mm version copy. The music has always hummed in my memory, and many times I have found myself humming or whistling the refrain. Now with todays technology I really can get it going.

Webber at one of his best.......2007-03-14
This CD is outstanding. I have seen the movie, the play and totally enjoy the soundtrack. It's music that you really "feel". Truly, Andrew Lloyd Webber at one of his best!!
Judas Iscariot a Cool Guy Afterall .......2006-10-30
I love this soundtrack. Carl Anderson's amazing performance as Judas is the driving force behind this recording. Ted Neeley provides a good voice and plays Jesus Christ well and I especially enjoy Barry Dennen's Pilate. Although most of the tracks are great, standouts include "Heaven on Their Minds," "Simon Zealotes," "Damned for All Time / Blood Money," "Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)," "King Herod's Song," and "Superstar."
I also reviewed the film that accompanies this soundtrack and in that review I avoided talking about the storytelling but promised to focus on it in this review of the soundtrack. The first reason I fell in love with this retelling of the Jesus Christ mythology was the dramatic shift in focus and interpretation. As I mentioned in my review of the film I love how the Jewish priests are given more of a voice and that there is some significance placed on the Roman occupation of the Jewish people. I feel like too often Christians don't consider the historical context of their mythology and that there is avoidance of the social and political climate during the period that Jesus was said to have lived.
The other major departure from Christian cannon that I appreciated was the deliberate un-vilifying of Judas Iscariot. Although less convenient for zealous fanatics, this version of the myth is much more compelling. Even though the Gospel of Judas was not in the public mind at the time and it is unlikely that Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber had it in mind its recently published translation helps prop up some of the sentiment between Jesus and Judas in this retelling. However, that is where the similarities end between the ancient Gnostic text and this pseudo-psychedelic reshaping of Christian mythology. I do think that this interpretation attempts to make the story more compelling rather than relying on a hodge-podging of standard hero stories as the original does. Carl Anderson performs beautifully under this difficult task--he presents a Judas that is not a sinning thief who sells Jesus out for money but a devout right-hand man who is forced (after much soul-searching) to turn in his mentor to save the cause and to attempt to prevent harm to Jesus. After he sees what his actions have caused for Jesus he is tormented and takes his own life in the midst of feelings of being used and betrayed by God and Jesus himself.
This is definitely a soundtrack that is tied to the time period in which it was released but I find that to be one of its charms. As an example of this, a friend of mine who recently saw this wondered if they had to give back the Batman theme song. I find the music and the energy that it infuses into this very political version of the Jesus myth very enjoyable. Definitely worth many many listens.
JC SUPES soundtrack : the Ultimate.......2006-04-25
Originally issued in 1970 packaged as a double Lp Concept album with Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Christ back in the days of the short-lived Rock Opera genre -- Jesus Christ Superstar was intially held as a musical play out of compromise and fear from sensoral scrutiny by its writers Timothy Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, as in its stead they opted to issue it on a 2 disc set of vinyl platters thus - until the time when it is finally made into a musical play in London the following year.
This movie soundtrack for the film rendition directed by Norman Jewison comes as the definitive and the most complete version of this work from the songwriting team of Webber and Rice.
Depicting the last seven days of Christ - of all musicals, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR comes as the most impressive, given that not a line from its narrative are spoken, but are all (mark this) SANG! And are not only sang - but each musical piece which consisted this work from Rice and Webber comes as one of the most melodic work that are ever written for any musical, that it even gave the impression for every track within as songs that could stand on their own. This work kind of mixed elements from the lost genre of radio dramas, classical music, rock, and the bravado of broadway musicals all wrapped up and jumbled collectively in one complete package - hearken it is both a concept album and a movie soundtrack all in one.
JCS the motion picture soundtrack also contains an impressive array of musical performances by its (albeit unsung) sessionist players - indeed it contains one of the best bass lines ever recorded that could be heard on the track wherein Ciaphas and Annas the chief high priests are having their discussion about Jesus - the track "Then We Are Decided", which is an exclusive portion found in the soundtrack. Also included is the theme song of the musical "Could We Start Again Please" which never appeared until the Original London Cast rendition came up with the song's first appearance - that presents an intermissionary(sic) segment of sorts having Mary Magdalene and Peter with the Disciples plead the song to Jesus, as a means to give further amplification about the Opera's whole thematical point, or idea that is, in this regard of its lyricist Tim Rice, that comes as more of a theoretical thought regarding the whole matter of Christ's message of coming down here on earth.
Appearing in this third and best version of the rock opera musical are some of its cast from the original 1970 album as well: Yvonne Elliman playing the part of Mary Magdalene, and Barry Dennen who've made several movie appearances lately, such as the praying priest in the James Cameron flick TITANIC - playing the role of Pilate. The appearances of Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot along with its entire cast/players comes as perfect in every sense of the word for all the versions that are ever assembled for this musical - most notably, Ted Neely - whose voice effectively gives a very distinguishable character to the role on playing the part of Jesus; eventually Neely appeared as a guest back-up vocalist on the song "Run To The End Of The Highway" for the late Christian Artist Keith Green's final LP, JESUS COMMANDS US TO GO, with Green's wife Melody.
Quite ironically, the musical being criticized by certain religious circles, and indeed somewhat profane at certain respect with its unconventional approach of depicting the last days of Christ - many among its cast who participated in this musical throughout its various incarnations actually became 'christians' later on in their career, such as Jeff Fenholt who played the role of Christ in the original London cast rendition, and released several albums under the 'Christian' label.
Also, a little controversy is identified in particular to this movie soundtrack recording that infers certain "allegations" to the phenomenon of backward messages called 'backmasking', as cited within the songs "I Dont Know How To Love Him", "Getsemane (I Only Want To Say)", "Could We Start Again Please", "Judas' Death", and "Trail Before Pilate".
However, upon its stature and composure - JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is generally a phenomenal piece in the history of the whole spectrum of musical genres in its entirety.
Nothing short of being monumental, I guess this is the one album that best defines a record album art-ifact.
An absolute classic.

Amazing Soundtrack.......2005-09-15
I grew up listening to this soundtrack! I love it!! I even found a copy of it in my parent's basement in vinyl!!
Old School.......2005-08-26
I reminded my friends as they listened to this in my car: Old School RULES. All of these songs have staying power, and all my friends end up jammin' to oldies when I play it.
Unfulfilled promise.......2005-08-10
The mixing on some tracks is awful, and at one point, vocals are lost altogether on The Rascals track. I love this music -- the soundtrack of my college days -- so having it on one disc for traveling (I commute 50 miles round trip every day) is great, but the quality could be lots better.
Short, but great oldies soundtrack........2003-12-24
I remember listening to these songs in the 80s when I was little. I guess you could say I 'grew up' on this stuff almost as much as on 80's music itself. It's largely a Motown/Soul collection, but it's varied enough to fit more than one audience.
1) "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," Marvin Gaye -- Everybody has heard this pop/soul hit before, right? A mid tempo ballad about hearing rumors 'Through The Grapevine'. This is one of the classic breakup songs.
2) "My Girl," Temptations -- Another widely known hit that many people today even like. This is probably the defining Motown song of the era. Sunny, pop inflected R&B about being with 'My Girl' and feeling good.
3) "Good Lovin," Rascals -- We take a turn toward a fast '60s soul rocker here. A lot more upbeat than most of the other tunes, and a great addition.
4) "Tracks of my Tears," Smokey Robinson -- Things slow way down again with this happy sounding, reflective soul ballad.
5) "Joy To the World," Three Dog Night -- Yet another classic rocker. This time, a mid tempo tune, and the closest thing to a party song.
6) "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," Temptations -- The group has their 2nd hit here, this one a bit more uptempo and more vocal.
7) "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman," Aretha Franklin -- Even though I'm not a big AR fan, I have to like this soulful ballad. Almost a precursor to 80's pop/soul artists like Whitney Houston.
8) "I Second That Emotion," Smokey -- Yes, Mr. Robinson also strikes twice, with an ever better tune. This fun, uptempo pop hit has a definate summertime feel to it. You'd have to be a fool to not love it.
9) "Whiter Shade of Pale," Procul Harem -- Another change in style with this extremely unique rock ballad. It's a bit hard to describe if you haven't heard it, but it's an organ heavy tale of, what sounds like, sailors at sea at a restaurant. Strange as it sounds, this is a great track. Don't skip it!
10) "Tell Him," Exciters -- The last song here is another upbeat 60's girl group soulful pop ditty. It's certainly not bad, but probably my least favorite of the bunch.
All in all, a very fun, quality reminder of why much of today's music s**ks. The absence of more rock tracks, and the repeated artists bring it down to a very narrow 4 stars. The music itself is worth 5, though.
Maybe the Stones wouldn't cough up the rights........2001-10-30
Could be my memory's faulty. Could be the Stones wouldn't give the rights to the label. But don't I remember the movie starting out rolling a coffin down the aisle to the wistful cynicism of Jagger's scratchy tenor complaint, "You Can't Always Get What You Want". To prove the literal truth of the lyrics, the song isn't in either soundtrack.
What else are we missing?!

Music from the movie Michael by Ron James, Sr........2007-07-13
I liked the music CD so much that I ordered the Movie DVD. My favorite Songs include I Don't Care If You Love Me Anymore, Heaven Is My Home, The Bright Side Of The Street, and Feels Like Home To Me. I think Louie Armstrong's version of What A Wonderful World is better, but Willie Nelson does a fine job with the song. I always enjoy anything Randy Newman does. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone.

Michael the music.......2007-05-10
I found the CD mildly disappointing in that the music played in the background by Chet Atkins was not included on the soundtrack. However, the music that is included is very good!
Loving It!.......2007-03-29
I cannot stop listening to this soundtrack. From Bonnie Raitt to Norman Greenbaum. Perfection beginning to end.

Thoroughly enjoy this movie. It is one I can sit and watch over and over. Really enjoy the score from the film also. A feel good film.

As Much A 70's Soundtrack As A Film Soundtrack.......2006-03-07
The use of the phrase "Music from the Motion Picture" gives this the feel of a soundtrack, but what it really amounts to is a 70's mix CD, and a darn good one. In addition to "Hello It's Me," one of Todd Rundgren's biggest hits, the CD also includes the rarely-collected ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, the full-length version of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc (not the edited mix that seems to be on every other 70's collection), and also the version of "Crazy On You" by Heart WITH the acoustic guitar intro. This CD also introduced me to Sloan ("Everything You've Done Wrong"), who sound right at home with a bunch of 70's hits but are actually a modern group. Also included are the two best 'soundtrack' pieces that Air recorded for the movie; "Ce Matin La" (which will sound familiar from the scene where Cecilia ghost-reads her diary) and "Playground Love," the recurring musical motif of the film. Great stuff to pop into the CD player while driving or working on the computer.

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza
Customer Reviews:
great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16
This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.
I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!
fantastic.......2007-03-11
I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.
whoa........2006-09-04
"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.
Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17
I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.
Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08
The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

Amazon.com essential recording
Calling this one of Prince's most interesting albums doesn't do justice to how kicky and playable it is. The soundtrack from his failed romantic comedy Under the Cherry Moon, the disc often sounds like a preview of the supremely surefooted quirkiness of its follow-up, the classic Sign o' the Times. Marrying lean funk grooves to over-the-top orchestrations and trying his hand at Parisian balladry and a hushed, Pet Sounds-style instrumental, he triumphs as few other record makers did in 1986. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Prince Record.......2007-03-05
After listening to this CD recently, I've come to the conclusion that this is my favorite Prince record. This record is mature, yet funky, with great lyrics and interesting 'sounds'. I love how the drums stand out on 'New Position' and the funky synth on 'Girls and Boys'. Prince explores jazz with 'Do U Lie' and 'Sometimes It Snows In April' is simply outstanding. Buy this record!!!
Prince's European adventure.......2006-04-19
After the revolutionary "Purple Rain" and the experimental "Around the World in a Day", Prince continues his creative peak with "Parade". Instead of Beatles-esque psychadelia, here we find Prince combining his usual sleek electro-funk with European sounds (clearly inspired by the Paris setting of the "Under the Cherry Moon" film that this album is actually the soundtrack to). The film was hopelessly silly, but this album is anything but. It's everything the best Prince music is: beautfiul, bizarre, sexy, intuitive and groundbreaking.
Damn, do I miss the Revolution.
I can't stop listening to this one.......2006-01-19
20 years ago i was 11 and playing with transformers while this album would play non stop. To this day it still gets haevy rotation minus the toys. I Love it.....
Artistic Parade.......2005-12-19
This is one of Prince's best concept records, not as popular with the masses as his other great records probably because he continued going in a totatlly different direction as he started to do with 'Around the world in a day.' Parade put the nail in the coffin for all those waiting for Purple Rain II. However, a true artist doesn't follow the public's opinion, pop singers do that.
Parade is his most diverse sounding CD, yet is the most cohesive of his eighties releases. The songs flow from one to the other smoothly(tracks 1-4), which is the best use of segues between songs that I have ever heard on record, even the abrupt changes don't disrupt the flow. The CD covers so many different moods and styles but all songs fit into place, including the hit 'Kiss', that Tom Jones later completely destroys. To say Prince was experimenting with different styles is an understatement. He takes the overall influence of French themes, related to the movie of course, and incorporates them into his style. The French flavor is there as a supplement, not as the overall influence which makes this recording even more unique and one of his finest. Lisa and Wendy stand out on this record as well with some great background instrumentation and voice. The record is perfect and the sound is crisp and clear... not for the casual pop music listener.
And concerning the movie; it is a very funny take on early movies from the 40s & 50s. Prince & Jerome display a cool chemistry as best friends. However, if you do not know the style or are familiar with Black & white comedies from the early years of film, then you didn't get the point of the film, especially in the mid-80s; hence all the negative comments.
Prince's Parade Is a Good One.......2005-12-02
After the critisized "Around The World In A Day" Prince did not change his mind and released another album with psychedelic influences. "Parade" that also was the soundtrack to his movie "Under the Cherry Moon". What differs this album from the previous one is perhaps that mzny more of the songs are slow paced here and less illusional, there are also less guitars used on this album and more songs that sound like traditional soul-funk, but very melancholy. The "Revolution" band does a great job here as the backround choir and it feels like they are more influentual on this album then before.
First song "Christopher Tracy's Parade" feel like it should have been on the last album, it picks up where "Around the World" left off. Great instruments used here. It's kind of like Prince's answer to Beatles "Sgt Pepper". "New Position" is considerably funkier, it's also about sex which is unique on this album where Prince deals with far more "important" issues then his sexual fantasies. The way he says "Honey" in the beginning on the song is awesome. The next song "I Wonder You" is short, he actually doesn't appear here, but his band sings the few lyrics. "Under the Cherry Moon" is a slow paced piano ballad. It was also the name of his movie. "Girls & Boys" feautures horns which makes up the song. There is some talking in French on this song. Sheila E Appears on the next song "Life Can Be So Nice" It's a funky uptempo song for a change.
"Venus de Milo" is instrumental, the title derives from Ancient Greek sculpture of the same name that is available on Louvren in Paris. "Mountains" is also funky uptempo that Prince is so good at. "It's only mountains and the sea, There's nothing greater, u and me". "Do U Lie" is a slow paced jazzy song again. Then comes "Kiss", the big hit from this album! I agree with those that said that it doesn't fit here compared to the rest of the songs. However it was just Kiss that was this album's biggest hit single. "Anotherloverholenyohead" is a midtempo melancholy song, takes the price for oddest name. "Sometimes it Snows In April" is a piano ballad, that closes this album well. Almost 7 minutes.
Overall, A melancholy album that is also atleast half-psychedelic. Apart from his previous album, many songs are slow paced here, it's also considerably funkier then "Around the World". It doesn't have as many highlights but it's a very solid album, very well suited for the movie it became soundtrack for.

Crossroads.......2007-01-09
The music is much better than the acting in this film. Ry Cooder's production of classic blues tunes remains one of my favorites today. The Karate Kid steps up to the plate but his performance is mediocore yet saleable. A great story, looking for Robert Johnson's lost tracks, a rendeveouz with the devil, a young love affair and a quest for redempetion make this film very likeable. It is, however, the music that sets it apart. If you are a fan of R. Johnson a lover of the blues then it's a must see/listen.
No Crossroads Duel, No Problem.......2006-02-04
I see that most of the reviewers for this record are disappointed that the Cooder-Vai duel didn't appear on the soundtrack album. That's understandable. But for me, that was better experienced as video. Personally I think the high point of the soundtrack, and the movie for that matter, was the electric guitar bottleneck piece "Feelin' Bad Blues". It is fantastic. It sounds like the guitar may be accompanied by a hammer dulcimer toward the end. I played this for a young guy I work with who is a heavy metal fan and is just discovering the blues. He got wide-eyed.
I just wanted to correct a post I read earlier..........2005-03-22
All of the best cuts from this movie are actually located on Steve Vai's CD entitled "The Elusive Light and Sound". It is a very excellent CD, and has over 40 tracks on it. Thats all, Thanks.
Good Soundtrack.......2004-11-11
Good sountrack, and while I think that the idea was to lean towards blues on this release, some of the best music from the movie isn't on this release. To get that you need the movie DVD, and though I have no complaints in seeing the movie to get hear these tracks, it would have been nice to have them included on the soundtrack.
Ah, the wonders of marketing!.......2004-06-25
Just wait until August, and buy the DVD. The 'soundtrack' only has just over 30 minutes of music on it, and omits some of the good stuff! If you simply MUST HAVE it, by all means, go ahead. As for me, I'm using my copy for a coaster right this minute.

Customer Reviews:
I Wish There Weren't Any Songs.......2006-11-20
"Apollo 13" marks James Horner's return to scoring evocative, adventure, epic music in a long time. The main title presents the evocative part as Tim Morrison (from Boston Pops fame) plays the trumpet in a very solemn way. The adventure part is best represented in the tracks 'Launch Control' and 'All System Go/The Launch', showcasing Apollo 13's lift off. I mean I was so happy to hear Horner back in the adventure arena. Then there is spectacular action in the two-minute track 'Master Alarm'. Then there are the quiet moments, the best being 'The Darkside Of The Moon', where Annie Lennox is heard wailing or singing -I don't know, but it's beautiful nonetheless. The album closes with Annie Lennox singing the adventure theme in the first quarter of the end credits, a track that compiles the three major themes of this fine Horner score.
But why am I giving three stars to this album? Call me a film score freak, but I have always loved soundtrack albums with orchestral score only; unless there are songs written by the composer hired for the movie -in this case, James Horner. However, there are songs which were popular at that time; I may not have a problem with that as long as I listen to them in the film, but together with Horner's music in the album...Well, that I don't like. Plus there are dialog and sound effect excerpts from the movie, and that makes the listening experience kinda hard to digest. Really.
I would have wished an only-James-Horner-score album, but I'm sure that, because of merchandising reasons, that could not have been possible. So I have no choice but to stick with this album...for the time being.
Great score. Where is it?.......2006-07-19
The powers that be should have released an "orchestral score only" Apollo 13 soundtrack, as was done for (for example) _L. A. Confidential_. As it is, James Horner's beautiful, inspiring, and amazing work is obscured by intercutting with dialog and period pop tunes. As a matter of fact an "orchestral score only" CD was actually compiled and pressed, but distributed to Motion Picture Academy members only for award consideration; it sometimes turns up on ebay. It can be identified by its all black-and-white insert photo. Or, the orchestral score (as released on that CD) plays behind the title menus on the movie DVD.
Captivating the 'Golden Age' of the American Space Experience.......2005-07-20
This compact disc will stir the hearts and minds of all patriotic Americans who deeply love their country. As part of our colorful history and the 'Golden Age' of space travel done by NASA, this c.d. instantly captures the suspense and the triumph of modern technology overcoming the dangers of space exploration. If you liked other John Williams musical scores such as E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, and Star Wars, then you will love this soundtrack as well.
I'd like less fluff, but..........2005-05-28
This is a good, if not great, rendition of the music for "Apollo 13". Problem: soundtracks which seem to cut against the mood established by Horner's original music. Truth is, when I hear this one, I frequently avoid everything but Horner's original compositions and the movie dialogs. THEN you can feel as if you were watching the movie. Two more things: 1)the female vocalist adds an almost dreamlike mood to the score; 2)the main title, which is excellent, draws and expands upon Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". One of James Horner's better scores.......2005-05-12
Apollo 13 is one of James Horner's better scores, and it's pre-Titanic, so Apollo 13 is actually pretty original. The score is moving and patriotic and totally enthralling. Unfortunately, the score is constantly interrupted by dialogue from the movie and songs from the 60's. As a person born in 1980, these songs have no relevence to me, and I program my cd player to skip the because they detract from my enjoyment of the cd. Overall, I rate Apollo 13 very high as a score, but I gave it 4 stars because of the annoying songs.
