Bringing together the original cuts of classic tracks such as "Skylarking" and Dawn Penn's instantly recognizable "No, No, No," Studio One Rockers showcases not only the talents of influential artists that were to become synonymous with reggae but also the styles, sounds, and, above all, rhythms that were to dominate Kingston studios into the 1970s and beyond. There are a number of rock-steady classics (hence the name), with tracks like Hammond-Organ maestro Jackie Mittoo's "Hot Milk" and the legendary Marcia Griffiths's "Feel Like Jumping" highlighting the then-dramatic change in style away from the faster beats of ska towards heavy, bass-led tracks with a much slower tempo. But Studio One Rockers is not restricted to this. The semi-instrumental track "Phoenix City" pounds along at a breakneck pace with trumpets belting and, along with "Greedy G," shows the importance a faster beat, a funky take, or a big-band sound also had within the Studio One fold. There are tracks from DJs like Lone Ranger with his "Badder Dan Dem" vocal rhythms and dancehall sounds. Roots artists include one of its biggest stars, Horace Andy, whose then unique falsetto was later emulated by many looking for a similar pop success. Then a preteen, reggae star Freddy McGregor also appears on "Bobby Babylon." Freddy, like many of the artists here, was to produce some of his best work under the watchful eye of Studio One's equally famous producer--Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. In many ways a tribute to Coxsone's production skills and rhythms that continue to be rediscovered and recut, Studio One Rockers is essential listening for anyone with even a passing interest in Jamaican music. --Caroline Butler

classic reggae.......2005-02-19
This copilation of reggae from the original label in jamaica is one of the best selections you will ever hear on one disc. With or without spliff you will enjoy the trip. Just sit back, listen with a cool drink in you hand and envision a warm beach sunset view. Remember to turn up the bass and be transported. You won't be disappointed. If you can convince others, than better, it is for all to enjoy.
a real find.......2003-09-04
MMMM. After I had thought that I had acquired all the good studio one stuff, I took a chance on this and was duly rewarded.
Some familiar stuff (to me, at least), such as Johnny Osbourne, the Skatalites, but it mixes in nicely.
For those who aren't familiar, the best way I can think of to describe Johnny Osbourne's sound is Marvin Gaye singing reggae. That same silky smooth voice and enormous range, backed by a soulful organ and floating tempo. This track is a good example of his sound and a true classic.
The Skatellites use a lot of horns and are largely instrumental. But classic. More of a choogling, ska-type beat (ie faster) than Osbourne. The Phoenix City song on this album has got to be my favorite Skatalites song - and that's really saying something, because they have made a lot of classic tracks.
Similar for Horace Andy - probably my new favorite Horace Andy song. This track does not have much of his trademark screeching and instead has him singing much more like an early Jimmy Cliff style (circa the harder they come).
Dawn Penn's track is smooth, sultry and a godsend. I played this at a bar and most of the patrons asked who it was. Almost recalls something by the Cowboy Junkies or Mazzy Star in terms of the vocal style. Just beautiful.
Other high points are the Freddie MacGregor & Lennie Hibbert tracks. All in all, the only track I'm not completely sold on is the crabwalking track by Prince Jazzbo, simply because its just rapping over the Horace Andy track and the cuts aren't all that crisp. But a lot of other people would probably like it.
The Cover Says It All.......2002-01-27
So, I'm in the record store a while back picking through the same ol' stuff. I was getting frustrated because I felt like all I ever do is look at the same thing over and over without new results. Since I practically live for music, you can imagine how frustrating it is to come to a dead end with music experiences. Especially knowing there is more out there than you've been exposed to so far.
On my honeymoon to the islands I became fairly familiar with reggae. Mind you, I'm not an expert by any means. Every cab driver there listened to reggae. I couldn't believe how nice the cabs were and how much money they put into their stereos. Anyway, they all listened to reggae. It was my first real exposure to the music, but it really gave me something to associate it with. Since that time I have been a huge fan.
This collection of artists is a great one. The first time I ever heard it, it took me back to the islands immediately. It was everything I was looking for. I needed it, too. I had hit a dead end with the music I was listening to. I had been begging for a new genre to experience. Reggae seemed perfect.
Needless to say, as I was in the store, a friend of mine recommended this album and proceeded to give me some of the history behind it. As I listened, I briefly perused the back cover to see how many songs and artists were on the compilation. Enough to keep me busy for a while. I have since searched for many of the artists on this album with great results. I really owe a lot to this album. I really owe a lot to reggae. It showed me a new side to music when I really needed it.
The album starts off with "Real Rock" by Soul Dimension. This song has one of the thickest reggae sounds I've heard. Immediately you know that this album is going to take a lot of stress away. Next is the wonderful song by Marcia Griffiths titled "Feeling Like Jumping." There is also an appearance by the great Horace Andy. I have been familiar with some of his dub work. "Truth and Rights" by Johnny Osborne is one of my favorites on the album. Probably my favorite. For a moment you might think it's The Fugees.
If you are into reggae or are looking for something that might get you into it, I would recommed this compilation. It has some of the greatest songs. Put this on after school or work on Friday afternoon and enjoy life. You could put it on anytime and get the same feeling. Friday afternoon just happens to be my favorite time of the week.
Skankable !.......2001-07-22
This is a collection of storming classic's cut for Clement " Coxsone " Dodd's legendary Studio One record label ( the most important label in Jamaica's history ) . The Ska , Rocksteady , organ driven instrumentals , Roots Reggae , and DJ-ing that are represented on this disc will have you skanking around your living room floor , such is the dancability of all the tracks .
Any record that contains seminal tracks like Marcia Griffiths - " Feel Like Jumping " , Johnny Osbourne's - " Truth And Rights " , Michigan and Smiley's - " Eye Of Danger " , Dawn Penn's classic - " No , No , No " , and Cedric Brooks majestic - " Ethiopia " , has to be a must buy cd . It also comes with a nice booklet that has an interview with the great man himself , Mr C.S. Dodd .
I'd also recommend the Dynamite series of reggae compilations released on the Soul Jazz label , as they are also essential .

This two-CD compilation chronicles the urgent and early artistry of Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and of course, Bob Marley. These historic sessions, recorded at the legendary Studio One in Kingston, showcase the embryonic stage of the Wailers band, backed by the Skatalites, The Mighty Vikings, Rita Marley, Junior Braithwaite, and many of Jamaica's finest musicians. Even on these old discs, Marley steals the show with his riveting and revolutionary vocals, as evidenced by the pulsing, prehistoric renditions of "Simmer Down," "Hooligan Ska," and his anthem "One Love." Several unreleased tracks and alternate takes--like Marley and company's riff on the Beatles' "And I Love Her," and a rare rehearsal track, "Wages of Love"--reveal their stylistic range and work ethic. To put it in evolutionary terms, this collection traces reggae's musical and philosophical DNA down to its R&B, doo-wop, Rastafarian, ska, and rock steady roots. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Album Description
When the "rude boys" gathered at Studio One on Brentford Road in Kingston, the acknowledged leaders were the Wailers. The youthful Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh generated an enthusiasm which was one of the cornerstones of the Ska era, and in these early days they laid the foundation for one of the greatest musical legacies the world has ever known. This album contains the first chronological survey of Bob Marley and the Wailers recordings made at Studio One, Jamaica's premier record label. The forty songs on this collection contain the cream of their Studio One output as well as previously unreleased alternate takes and rare Jamaican singles sides. In most cases this material is taken from the original session tapes and is presented without the overdubs found on other collections of this material. The in-depth liner notes, culled from hundreds of hours of interviews, by Wailers authorities Roger Steffens and Leroy Jodie Pierson, piece together the Wailers formative years at Studio One, and along with the music, make this the definitive Studio One Wailers collection.
Contains forty songs comprising the first chronological and definitive survey of Bob Marley and the Wailers' formative years.
Customer Reviews:
Great early Wailers material........2007-03-26
If you can only get behind the slick production of the mid to late 70's Bob Marley stuff, then this album may not be for you. But if you want to go beyond the reggae that appeals to the "wine and cheese" crowd, by all means pick this one up. This is the raw, rough and ready sound of the early Wailers - Peter, Bunny and Bob. Recorded before worldwide fame with limited production, but to my ears the lack of audio quality is more than made up for by the warmth and immediacy of these recordings.
Not a Reggae Fan.......2007-02-28
But I bought this anyway, after hearing a couple of tracks online on Mark Lamarr's BBC2 show. Actually there's lots of interesting stuff in here, esp. for those w/a more ska preference. Though I do have a ska preference, the collection feels inconsistent to me. Some cuts are much stronger than others, I don't have a feel for the overall sound, & there aren't that many stand-out tracks. An important collection, I imagine, but more for completists than the casual fan.
collectors material.......2006-03-31
If you like the raw old school sounds of Bob Marley this album is for you. Any Bob fan will appreciate the younger voice of mr.marley. A necessary part of the collection.

Album Description
Nearly every major Reggae artist in Jamaica first recorded for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. While most Reggae fans are familiar with Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Dennis Brown, few know the person instrumental in discovering and nurturing these artists. This was Mr. C.S. Dodd - "Coxsone" - and nearly every Jamaican artist of note got his or her start in Coxsone's Studio One stable.
First released over 20 years ago, this album is newly remastered from the original master tapes with six additional tracks added for your listening pleasure.

"when you think of reggae ~ think of Bob Marley & Wailers".......2003-03-11
Rounder Records presents a journey back into the past with "Greatest Hits at Studio One", featuring Bob Marley and the Wailers. We're talking about Kingston, Jamaica in 1963 with Bob Marley, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Livingston, Peter McIntosh and Cherry Smith who made up The Teenagers (another name), The Wailing Rudeboys (yet another name), The Wailing Wailers (yet another & another) and then they settled on The Wailers. We have now traveled back into that time thanks to this album. Great Britain's Island Records gave us the debut album "Catch a Fire" (1973), then came "Burnin'" later that same year, all featuring originality and talent supreme. Ask someone to name a reggae group, and the first name that comes to mind is naturally Bob Marley and the Wailers. An album loaded with the fresh new sound of a group destined for great heights. Original artwork, photos and liner notes that is the envy of every Marley fan. With songs inclusive "TREAT ME GOOD", "DREAMLAND", "SINNER MAN" and "I'M GOING HOME", is an essential part of any collection. This is the real jewel, most of which have never appeared anywhere on compact disc...particular songs that clearly mark the history of Reggae. This one sounds and is too good to pass up.

Clement S. "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One sound, its rhythms flowing like water, is the grandfather of modern reggae. Granted, most of the stars associated with Studio One, such as Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott, were of the male persuasion, but some of the most enjoyable music to come out of this prolific hit factory featured female vocalists.
Feel Like Jumping collects 16 tracks by some of Jamaica's best-known female artists (Marcia Griffiths, Hortense Ellis) as well as a few who deserve greater recognition (Cecile Campbell, Myrna Hague). The selections, many of which were previously unreleased, are all first-rate and reflect the diversity of styles found within reggae music. Two cuts in particular, Dawn Penn's original version of her late-'80s club hit "No, No, No" and Norma Fraser's delicate rendition of the ageless sound-system staple "First Cut Is the Deepest," make this collection a must-have for serious collectors of Jamaican music. --Rebecca Levine
Customer Reviews:
Not the best investment........2002-01-08
I thought that it was going to be like the other collection of old school reggae that I have compilated for myself. But I was wrong. It's only one or two songs that sound good. It's too bad that women weren't recognized in reggae music. But this CD just isn't great.
Not Quite the Best.......2001-04-01
Heartbeat does it again with this hit and miss compilation of female reggae singers. While only a fool would dispute the greatness of No No No by Dawn Penn (this is the reason to buy the comp), and the rare and charming Buck Town Corner by the Jay Tees is a nice suprise, the comp as a whole suffers from not concentrating solely on one era. Had they stuck to the rock steady years instead of including recent appropriations of that eras sound (Nana McLean's Don't Worry About Me) it would have resulted in a much more satisfying product. Heartbeat has a long tradition of mix and match the era reggae comps and this one is no exception.
smooth.......2000-06-24
It's not as dancehall as you might expect, but these grooves are still especially smooth, including the gorgeous new recordings by Nana McLean and Nina Soul.
The Women Know.......2000-06-10
A great taste of music from the women of studio one. The love and passion for Reggae is alive in the voices of these artists. A must for any collection.

* In most cases the tracks were taken from the original (1965-1968) master tapes (fair sound quality)
CONS:
* In some cases the tracks were taken from the original acetates (lower sound quality)
BOTTOM LINE:
If you are a tried-and-true Wailers' fan, then this is a vital album for you; If you are not, then don't start your collection with this album (try "Burnin'" or "Catch A Fire" first).
The Wailer's at Their Best.......2000-12-28
I own the record of this fantastic album and have rarely enjoyed an entire album so much! It is not at all what one would expect of Bob Marley; it is not rasta but early ska. The songs fantastic and you must hear them, buy the album and be completly satisfied.

Customer Reviews:
not all funk.......2005-01-15
I bought this cd because the cover said "studio one funk"; and Jamaican funk is something I wanted to hear, as it is so rare. They had better called it "Some Studio One Funk and Lots of Plain Reggae". No that it's not good, but be warned. Okay, the tunes - "Shaft" is an instrumental remake of the classic Isaac Hayes tune; very good; "African Descendants" has nothing to do with funk, but is a very solid chant like cut with great backing vocals; "Poco Tempo" is the best track - a very mysterious sounding Augustus Pablo take on the Woman of the Ghetto/Sidewalk Doctor rhythm (which can maybe be described as "funky reggae") ; "Reggae Feet" is a hybrid between funk and reggae with Lloyd Williams shouting things like "Lord have mercy" and stuff; "Hang Em High" is pure early seventies funk, with the great organ sound of Jackie Mittoo; "Idleberg" is a solid saxophone instrumental over Horace Andy's "Skylarking" rhythm (again not much to do with funk, though it is "funky"); "Beat Down Babylon" is an early dj tune; "Now" is funk - reggae from the early seventies or late sixties, instrumental; "007" is an instrumental ska tune; "See A Man's Face" is a dj take on the Horace Andy tune; "Love Jah" is more reggae than funk; "Do Your Thing" is Leroy Sibbles' impersonation of US soul; good tune; "Music Answer" is a dub tune from the late seventies, not so great sound quality but a nice bassline; "Melting Pot" is almost identical to the Booker T & MG's track; "You Found Heaven" is reggae with soulful vocals; "Steady Beat" a rocksteady instrumental; "It's A Shame" is a cover of I think an old motown tune; "Another Thing" is two minutes long and not funk; "Funky Broadway" is a not so good cover of Stevie Wonder's "Uptight"
Only about 3 or 4 tracks that could be described as funk; and a lot of filler, in my opinion.
I wouldn't recommend this album . I just bought "Studio One Discomixes" and that's a much better compilation.
