Customer Reviews:
Good but not great.......2007-02-09
I am a big fan of old school gothic rock. The new stuff is pretty good...and so is this collection. The booklet inside contains an explaination from Athan Maroulis (Spahn Ranch). According to him, the compilation was missing something and needed a fresh start so to speak. So the collection includes some darkwave and industrial artists. I was excited. I haven't had much exposure to industrial music because I'm still kind of stuck in the 80s. What made this just ok for me is that some of the worst songs by many accomplished bands and artists made their way here.
The Die Form song was absolutely awful. And where in the world are the Sisters of Mercy?! Seriously, they are the embodiment of goth to me and they aren't even on here! The Mission doesn't even make it on here until the 4th disk...and it's not even a classic!! And did everyone just forget about Shroud?! I sure didn't!!!! The Bauhaus song was pretty crumby too.
It's not a total bummer though, there really is some great stuff on here. Die Laughing made the cut (although it is an instrumental), there's some Big Electric Cat, and Ataraxia. The Ministry song, Everyday Is Halloween, is a great choice! I haven't heard it in many a year. And I absolutely love Dinah Cancer (45 Grave). The Cruxshadows are amazing. Rasputina is awesome. I think, more than anything, I was hoping for a little more goth.
If you are new to the genre, DO NOT let this be your first compilation! Start out with the classics like the Sisters of Mercy, the Banshees, Joy Division, and the Bauhaus (and particularly a better Bauhaus song than what's on here). As much as I hate to admit it, the latest compilation, A Life Less Lived, from Rhino Records is the best place to start.
All the same, if you happen upon this collection, go ahead and buy it. Some of these bands have long since broken up and now their music is EXTREMELY hard to find. I was lucky to set my hands on this; and while I'm not wild about it, I still enjoy it because most of it is just good music.
Wonderful.......2006-04-03
I purchased this album yesturday and simply can't get enough of it.
I'm not sure why exactly it seems to be getting so many bad reviews; sompe people seem to be complaining that its not just one genere of music: "Goth rock", "Goth", "Darkwave" or whatever else when apparently they haven't even read the booklet that came with this compliation cd
"Orginally, this collection was going to be similar to previous releases such as Goth Box, in that it would feature only "Gothic music", When compiling began, it became blatantly obvious that the material needed a fresh approach." etc. etc.
As for the people that say that the songs choosen for this album were "mundane" or unorginal, or whichever else; I wonder why they purchased this set in the first place without even looking at the back of the box; everything is clearly marked there plane as day.
I don't mean to start any kind of "Flame war" here, but I feel that the negative criticism that this album has recived is un-fair based on the incompetence in its authors.
Oh, the person I had purchased this compilation from also meantioned that it seems that this is also going out of print, so if you manage to track down a copy I would highly suggest not passing up a chance to get this.
excellent.......2005-09-13
A nice mixture of different dark styles. From the usual suspects of Spahn Ranch, Ministry, Bauhaus and Switchblade Symphony to some of less well known stars of the dark side.
Some surprising choices from those bands, like choosing a song off of Ministry's keyboard album instead of the even darker stuff that was to follow.
While most of the people buying it probably already have a lot of what's here, the things you don't make it worth it. If you like Darkwave, industrial/goth, etc., etc. it's well worth the price.
fine compilation of Goth and industrial music.......2005-06-08
I suppose it's difficult to please fans of Goth, who tend to look on the gloomy side of things by definition, but I think this collection is very good! There are four CDs in a nice case and the extensive liner notes are quite informative and entertaining.
Here you'll find cuts from Alien Sex Fiend, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Magenta, Die Krupps, Mission UK and many others, many of them on a compilation or for US distribution for the first time. Of course not all of your favorite groups will be here and you would undoubtedly have put on a different song than the one selected, but with the great range of music and the great written information, chances are you will learn something as well as discover a few new favorite groups.
4 cds of wildly inconsistent music.......2005-05-07
Cleopatra Records produces a wide variety of compilations. Some quite good (tribute to pink floyd and gong's YOU remixed) and others awful. This package falls into the awful category. A nicely done package with little inside. Over 50 bands contribute to this. Biggest names are Bauhaus (In the Flat Field), Leg. Pink Dots, Delerium, Fields of Nephilim, Boyd Rice, etc. If you are a true collector of these folks and expect to get something new or really rare, forget it. Most of it is available. The rest of the multitude of bands sound like 80 throwbacks. Nothing really innovative or original. Problem with gothic has always been it's pretentiousness. Cleopatra has already released a variety of dull gothic compilations, why do this again? I am sure there is something in here for everyone, but not everyone will love all of this material. Borrow it from a friend, not worth the price in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:
great compillation.......2004-04-07
i'm a die hard fan of freestyle but the other people who reviewed this box set are stuck in the past. I like the way freestyle music has progressed. They still have their roots and are trying new things. Great group of songs, really got me movin. Plus I really don't mind the aversion from the basic beat to something more uptempo as long as its not trance
Most of these singers need to get with the program........2004-03-29
This CD is Koo because you get all of the collection for 25 dolllars. BUT, out of all 4 CD's excluding the Euro Invasion(forget about those euro invasion cd'd) there are enough songs to probably make 1 good cd. I'll break it down: A lot of songs don't belong on this CD, and they ain't from Canada and make the CD look good. Goods songs are Disc One: tracks 1,2,17,19,20. Disc Two: 2,8(P.S #7 the ughy hughy dughy song is hella gay. Disc Three: 2,4,7,9,10,15, Disc Four: 1,2,3,4,10,11,12,13,15(Best CD). all other songs either were used and has nothing to do with freestyle heaven or are straight up bogussssssss!
YOU CALL THIS FREESTYLE ??.......2004-02-28
Well you can see by my title to this comment i was defenetly dissapointed with this 5 cd box set.I cant belive i only found one track to be appealing to me, and i love freestyle and i'll give any type of new freestyle a chance, as long as they dont cross the line into euro , progressive type of beats. Well sure enough 85% of these cd's contain euro beats all that progressive stuff you would hear at your downtown club atmosphere. If i wanted to buy a euro/progressive cd i would've done that. I admit they threw in a lil' suzy here and a lil stevie b there but those songs are the 2000 version and do not sound THE SAME.The voices were the original artists but the tones and they way they sing them is totatly diferent from the original way they usually sound .As a freestyle die hard fan i was sad and dissapointed beacause here i thaught i was gonna listen to some new artists and keep the freestyle alive, but now i see why freestyle isn't around anymore because if they come out with music like this and call it freestyle theres no wonder why us the loyal fans stay away from it.Oh and one more thing these songs are not complete from begining to end, they made it a mix wich totaly made me angry.Well is not like if i wanted to hear them in there full versions because this NEW FREESTYLE isn't good anyway.
A TRUE FREESTYLE FAN FROM CHICAGO
P.S.
I'M STILL A FAN BUT NOT THIS TYPE OF "FREESTYLE" FAN.
I almost forgot don't think i gave it a star, in order for your comment to be posted you gotta give it at least one star. But by all means i dont mean any disrespect to amazon or cdnow.com, i just dont like this cd at all other than that cdnow and amazon are a great cd provider and with out this service i couldn't find cd's at all beacuse music stores dont carry any freestyle.

subpar.......1999-05-21
for some reason, i reviewed this collectiopn over 2 years ago. i dont own this and nobody should. it is too late to change the number of stars i gave it, i could only edit this and the title
Don't get this if you want the complete "message".......1998-12-29
I bought this CD because I wanted "the message" by Grandmaster. It's missing the middle verse!! Whoever put this CD together CUT OUT HALF THE SONG!! That's a sin. For this, I give it one star because I didn't have an option for zero stars.
Since I don't know the rest of the songs, I don't know what else has been cut and ruined. Ignorance is bliss, and overall, the choices seem pretty good. So, if ruining a classic doesn't bother you, then add a few stars - good RAP always deserves a few stars.

Customer Reviews:
Decent collection for the price.......2005-10-14
I bought this CD set because it was a recommendation from Amazon based on my purchase of Neo-Goth. It's good, but not great. Some of it is just too generic to be on a collection of industrial, and they left out some fantastic talents in the genre, but if you are going on a long car trip or want a couple of CD's you can listen to at work and not kick yourself for forgetting to bring home over the weekend, this is it.
It could have been better.......2004-11-05
I can't say that it's a bad album, but where's nine inch nails or ministry...?
Couldn't ask for a better industrial compilation.......2000-11-27
I originally purchased this set because I recognized a few bands on it (Die Krupps, Front Line Assembly, etc) and because it only cost.... for 3 CD's. I figured I could at least find a few songs on the 3 discs that would make it worth my money. What I didn't expect was for almost every song to be great! Even on my first time through the first CD, I thought to myself "Wow, each of these songs sound like the one song that you'd buy an entire CD for!". If you like industrial music, you will not be disappointed. Actually, if you're more into techno music, I would recommend this CD for you also. The third disc seems to be way into the techno side of the industrial spectrum, which creates some good variety in the compilation.
These CDs have been the only thing played in my car for the last 5 days since I got it in the mail!

Classic Tunes to Memorize and Hum at Will.......2001-12-19
I had never really heard industrial music before this... just some pop electronica/techno (Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk), pop punk rock (Green Day, Rancid, Screeching Weasel, AFI, The Offspring), and european classical (Satie, Chopin, Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, Wagner); this collection of songs really transformed my listening habits, because most of them get TO THE POINT, which is total auditory overload accomplished through bizarre use of synthesizers, voice-distortion systems, and even mass-produced factory objects (hence the 'industrial'): you are meant to feel and act like a piece of machinery, an oddly liberating concept, i've found. Anyway, disc one is the best, since it has the 3 best songs on the entire collection: tracks 1, 8, and 13 (Laibach's "Die Liebe", Controlled Fusion's "Disregards", and Neotek's "Pink Noise", respectively), but really all these discs are great and almost all the songs are too. In short, if you were ever facinated with the modern world of advanced technology and curious about its applications to human culture, this is a pretty good choice to start learning with.
The Best.......2001-02-23
This collection of Industrial Music is by far the best I've heard. Classic Industrial songs that never die, as well as the best Industrial Song ever recordered to this day... "Desert Storm" by Klute. If you are a big fan of Industrial Music, this is a "must have" for your collection. No collection is complete until you have this!

Album Details
Freestyle, house music's close cousin, exploded in popularity during the early 1980's. With artists like Stevie B, Trinere & TKA cranking out memorable jams like 'Party Your Body', 'I'll Be all You Ever Need' & 'Maria', fans went absolutley wild. This 1997 SPG label four-disc set captures the essence of the freestyle genre, featuring the hits from the artists mentioned above, plus songs by Nice & Wild, Pebbles, X-Posed, Debbie Deb & much, much more.

so close to perfect...but flawed.......2005-08-11
A definite buy for collectors of freestyle classic 12" versions on CD, but it's just not consistent enough. There are a few too many 7" versions, for instance, the really hard to get I Want You by Shana on CD, Some 12" versions are edited (the intro is missing from what goes around by giggles, for instance) and at other times, they opted for long album versions rather than the full 12" versions (Lisette Melendez and Trinere, for instance). Even so, you won't find a lot of this stuff on CD elsewhere, so try to get your hands on a copy of this compilation, or get each volume separately (they're listed here on amazon). Track times:

Freestyle music will never die for me.......2005-02-20
I bought this CD, and its cool. I grew up on the Lower East side of Manhattan (Las Avenidas) and as a teenager this was my music. We use to break dance at the circle with this and their were some carrying boomboxes and doing grafiti... I first fell in love to a nice rican girl with some of these songs. Therefore, I keep buying it and believe me a lot of people when they first here it say that it is nice...

Freestyle fans this cd is for you.......2004-04-03
Freestyle was a sound different from the mainstream. It was a latin hip-hop sound in which at times seem like sugar to the ears. But it was the sound that with help shape the eurodance sound of the mid to late 90's.Freestyle was the teen pop of many latino and non latino kids in the city.Withs its theme in love and heartbreak over latin flavored hip-hop.It was a moment in time and a sound of the late 80's teenager. Even know it never got as big as new jack swing it did leave its mark on dance pop.If you listen to the eurodance artists like amber, the real mccoys and labouche you will hear the keyboard licks of freestyle. As an Dj i'm always asked what music did i start playing first when i started djing 16 years ago.Freestyle was the first music i spun back in the day.All the songs on this cd was what i spun and they were popular. For me this cd really gives you the flavor of freestlye when it started going mainstream. Also when the sound started to die out.So pick it up and party your body
