My favorite songs:
1. Funkin' for Jamaica (Of course!)
2. Thighs High (I had forgotten about this song!)
3. Brighter Tomorrow (This is a good song - never knew it existed)
I paid domestic for this CD, so it's worth the value. Get a copy
for yourself and enjoy!

A Dud.......2005-04-26
I was a fan of Tom Browne during the early eighties, his heyday, and found many of his recordings in line with much of the jazz fusion of that time. When purchasing this CD, I mistakenly thought that it was the original "Funkin for Jamaica" album which was a good album, instead of a compilation. The tracks chosen for this CD lean heavily on the pop-jazz end, and fails to demonstrate any of Mr. Browne's acumen on the trumpet. Except for "Funkin for Jamaica" and one other track, this CD is very forgetful.
A very short guide to funkin for jamaica import CDs.......2001-03-06
There appear to be at least two imports titled Funkin' for Jamaica. I recommend mine (an Arista release made in Japan full title Funkin for Jamaica: The Best of Tom Browne). This import includes 3 Driza Bone remixes of Funkin for Jamaica two of which are arguably better that the original release (and one that is arguably worse...). For the life of me I can't fathom why this particular import failed to include the remixes (Note the 5 stars are for my F4J Import not this F4J Import).

Authentic music of the period.......2003-05-19
I've listened to this cd many times. I am still not tired of it. Yes, in a sense the music is coarse, but that's the kind of music it is - lusty, bawdy, and expressive of an era of high spirits. And that's the way these songs are sung. These are essentially 17th century tavern songs and are sung by people who obviously know what they're singing. These songs should be enjoyed with a flask of beer or a jug of wine.
To sum it up: YUCK.......2000-07-03
Who could complain about the fabulous tunes published by Playford... wonderful melodies and truly timeless. Unfortunately, here they are performed in a coarse and unmusical way. This "City Waites" ensemble is NOT the same one that recorded the wonderful "Pills to purge melancholy" of Thomas D'Urfey. The singing here is harsh and badly out of tune. There is scant use of instruments to make up for it or cover it up. Of my set of uncounted CDs, this is one of about 3 that I have listened to only a few times- I literally can't sit through it.

With the release of Friends For Life, Buju Banton's well-publicized switch from popular dancehall thug to the enlightened "Voice of Jamaica" is now a decade old. Just into his 30s, Banton continues on with the positive tip as he rails against guns ("Mr. Nine"), advocates safe sex ("Get It On"), and exhorts people to be stand up for their rights ("Up Ye Mighty Race"). Of course the rascal still loves the ladies, and there're several songs that toast the fairer sex here. The band sounds great throughout - reggae legend Sly Dunbar plays drums on several tracks -- and it's this live unit that truly diversifies Banton's dancehall sound, generally taking the music places it needs to go for the singer's universal message to be an effective one. From the bouncy cover of Peter Tosh's "Mama Africa" to the ominous dancehall groove of "Paid Not Played," Friends For Life proves that Banton is at the top of his increasingly well-rounded game. --Tad Hendrickson

Buju - Still Unbeatable ............2005-01-27
That ruff cut distinct voice grumbles through great dancehall classics but is also versatile for roots type conciousness music Iya.... Thank Shabba Ranks for telling Buju to sing in this fashion as we have all inherited a gem of an artist after Marley, Tosh & Cliff. Here, this album will slightly dissapoint his steadfast Ragga & dancehall fans. Hey, nothing can beat 'Til Shiloh or Inna Heights but do not take away the talent which is personified by Buju. Sure, few tracks are lack-lustre, but his dancehall flair is still unrivalled. He is doing today what Bob Marley did in the 70's and 80's. He is a true Legend ....
Raw & Abrasive.......2004-08-29
This is dancehall reggae reminding me of an updated Eddy Grant. I found his sound very raw & abrasive, especially when compared to the smoothness of a Bob Marley or Third World.
Jah Descendant.......2004-06-03
Jah Rastafari forever! Buju must have been sent to us by the Lord himself. Our generations Bob, Buju touches us with lyrics and sound that is untouchable. I am a Buju fan off top, he made me love reggae music. He has a way of touching the soul like no other. Inspiration doesn't come close to describing what his words are to me. I am a "Champion" through him. I can't review just this one album because the entire collection of his work is to reggae music what Shakespeare is to theatre. A king among kings, Bob Marley smiles on us through Buju! Continue on Til' Shilo blessed one!

Definitely a little disappointing. Some solid tracks in between, but the throwback to the dancehall days just doesn't resonate with me.

Customer Reviews:
Classic PORGY & BESS but JAMAICA is missing something!.......2004-05-24
The welcome CD reissue of the famous album of highlights from PORGY AND BESS by Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte will make collectors happy. While not a "theatrical" or cast recording, it offers some exciting performances that have been long out-of-print.
JAMAICA, on the other hand, is a true original cast recording. The 1957 musical was originally written for Belafonte, but when he left the project Ricardo Montalban took on the role and the show was re-written to showcase Lena Horne.
RCA Victor's original cast recording has had a curious history. It was made just as the labels were transitioning from mono to stereo recording. At that time it was not possible to fit as much material on a stereo 12-inch LP as on its mono counterpart. RCA Victor issued JAMAICA in mono as LOC 1036 containing all the show's songs but leaving out the Overture and editing out the introductions to "Savannah's Wedding Day" and "What Good Does it Do?" A few months late a Living Stereo release came out as LSO 1036 and including the Overture but dropping 4 songs ("Pity the Sunset", "What Good Does it Do?", "For Every Fish" and "Savannah (Finale)") These issues were deleted in 1961. In 1965 RCA Victor re-released JAMAICA in mono and stereo as LOC/LSO 1103. Now, LOC 1103 was a direct reissue of LOC 1036. BUT...are you following all this? ... LSO 1103 had all the songs, includng the extended versions of "Savannah's Wedding Day" and "What Good Does it Do?" but like its mono counterpart, left off the Overture. The 1995 RCA Victor CD release had the complete song program and the Overture. That CD, sadly is now in cut-out limbo. THIS edition (paired with PORGY AND BESS) reissues the program as heard on the 1965 stereo LP edition (LSO 1103) and is missing the Overture.
With or without the Overture, the score of JAMAICA is quite enjoyable, even more so on disc where you don't have to deal with the show's book! This is one case where the songs work better out of context. Mostly, the numbers offer a chance for Lena to take the spotlight and belt out the great Harold Arlen numbers: "Pretty to Walk With", "Push De Button", "Cocoanut Sweet", "Napoleon" and especially "Ain't it de Truth." The last song was originally written for Lena to sing in the film version of CABIN IN THE SKY. It was cut from the final release prints of the film (Censors objected to the number being staged so that she sang it in a bubble bath!) so Arlen recycled it into JAMAICA. THAT'S the kind of patchwork show JAMAICA was and although it was a minor hit (557 performances) it will never be revived and you don't hear fans of the score clamouring for a revival. It was all about Lena Horne.
Great music, average recording quality.......2003-11-20
I've owned this Porgy & Bess record for many years and purchased the cd as soon as it came out. Harry's and Lena's voices on "Bess, You is My Woman Now" just sends chills up and down my spine. Their voices together are fabulous. I love to hear Lena sing "Summertime". This cd is 36 minutes 52 seconds long. Four songs are song by Lena, and four by Harry. The remainder are duets.
The second CD, Jamaica, was new to me. The CD length is 51:49. Six songs are sung by Lena, three songs are sung by Ricardo Montelban, 3 songs are duets with both Lena and Ricardo. The remainder of the songs are sung by Adelaide Hall, Josephine Premice, Ossie Davis and Augustine Rios. Some of these songs are duets. Lena, as usual, is wonderful. I particularly enjoyed "For Every Fish", sung by Adelaide Hall.
I thoroughly enjoyed both of these cd's. At listening volumes, the cd quality is very acceptable. If I turned up the volume a little louder than normal, I could hear a very tiny buzz. Still, I highly recommend these CDs to any fan of Lena Horne, Porgy & Bess, Harry Belafonte, show tunes...
2 cast albums for the price of 1!.......2003-09-12
This great double-CD from the Collectables label includes two great cast albums: the original 1958 Broadway cast of JAMAICA and the 1959 studio cast of PORGY AND BESS, both starring the gorgeous Lena Horne.
In JAMAICA, one of the lovelier Broadway shows of the late 50s, Lena Horne stars as Savannah, and sings a gorgeous score written especially for her by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. The cast also includes Ricardo Montalban, Adelaide Hall, Josephine Premice and Ossie Davis.
I have absolutely fallen in love with this score, which features many beguiling numbers like "Cocoanut Sweet", "Pretty to Walk With", "Take it Slow, Joe", "Ain't it the Truth" (originally written for CABIN IN THE SKY), "Napoleon" and "Pity the Sunset".
PORGY AND BESS pairs Lena Horne with Harry Belafonte under the musical direction of Horne's husband Lennie Hayton. Horne is well-suited to the colorful score, and sings superb treatments of "I Wants to Stay Here" and "My Man's Gone Now". Harry Belafonte is wonderful singing "Oh, I Got Plenty of Nothin'" and "Bess, You is My Woman".
2 fabulous, long out-of-print cast albums, back and better than ever! Highly-recommended.
At Last!!!.......2003-02-16
I have been waiting for the Horne/Belefonte version of "P&B" to come out on CD since CD's were invented!! And here it is! Of all the versions of "P&B" I own, this is the one I love the most.I have worn out about 5 of the LP's,since I bought the first one in '59,when I was 11,and now I will be able to listen to it forever. Harry and Lena's voices mesh together so perfectly,it's audio-heaven.Especially on "Bess,You is My Woman." What a gorgeous duet. The arrangements and orchestras are wonderful, too. If you love Gershwin;love Harry;love Lena, get this CD.
I have not listened to "Jamaica" yet,as I am so into listening to this "old friend" I found so many years ago.So this review is based only on "P&B." I will say that the audio quality is perfect, though. And if you love Lena and Ricardo,I'm sure you won't go wrong.

Album Description
RE-RELEASE OF THE FAMOUS ROIR 1986 DOUBLE LENGTH CASSETTE-ONLY, NOW REMASTERED DIGITALLY FOR DOUBLE CD WITH 5 NEVER BEFORE RELEASED BONUS TRACKS!
In 1983 Herbie Miller, manager of Peter Tosh brought the original Skatalites (minus the late Don Drummond) back to Jamaica from all over the world to perform at the 1983 Jamaica Sunsplash.
The Skatalites had broken up 18 years earlier, after their short career of two years (1963-1965). Personal disagreements, conflicts and animosities had driven these inventors of Ska and master musicians to seek their own future as individual artists.
Miller, who became their manager, owned a nightclub in Kingston, Jamaica called The Blue Monk Jazz Gallery. Here, after 18 years of separation they reconciled their differences, (for a time), and rehearsed for Sunsplash '83 and performed live at the club before a crowd of local fans, friends, and fellow musicians.
There were no restrictions on the length of sets, no barriers on solos or improvisational experiments, and no recording studio limits on how long each song should last. They stretched out, played out, and had a joyous 18th anniversary celebration and reunion.
Fortunately, Miller recorded the rehearsals and nightclub performances and captured for history (and dance - mad Ska mavens) all the spontaneity, fire, electricity, and good fellowship of that unique moment. Ska at its best by the greatest Ska musicians in the world!
Customer Reviews:
The best Skatalites CD I've heard.......2007-01-08
(disclosure - this was my 1st Skatalites CD, back in 1990 or so)
Recently I've pulled several Skatalite CDs from the local libraries, and while others maybe more original... circa 1963 or whatever, this live recording from 1983 or so, of the original mates, gets them sounding their best, at least far as far as I've heard.
You will NOT be dissapointed in Stretching Out. Perhaps the best Ska CD ever. And why not, the best guys, the best songs, with 20 years of practice, doing it spontaneously.
Oh, and I saw them 2x in the early 1990s, and this IS what they sounded like.
They even recreate the smokey live sound of the original recordings.
You can't lose.
One of the most important skatalites recordings..........2005-02-17
For any fan of the Skatalites or ska in general, this is one of the most important recordings to own. I believe some of it was originally recorded on a single tape deck. I own the tape version of it, and the lack of recording quality is far overshadowed by the quality of the music. This album is a must have for any fan of the genre. Be warned though...after listening to this album, you will feel the need to buy more of the Skatalites' work.
The Skatalites put the "JAM" in Jamaica!.......2000-10-03
As a devoted roots fanatic, I am truly ashamed to say I only recently discovered these awesome pioneers of reggae music. I sometimes find ska too repetitive to enjoy, but the skatalites are a MAJOR exception. Their horn jams are truly unparalled in this, and perhaps any field of music. The tracks here begin and end with a bit too much repetition, but are saved by consistently incredible solos in the middle. EVERYONE I play it for agrees. Unfortunately, "Stretching out" has very poor sound quality (originally recorded on tape) so it can't get 5 stars. But, rest assured, it is second only to "Ball of Fire" in jamming and deserves a coveted spot in any music collection.
Skatalites most candid & comprehensive archive.......1999-10-02
This is The Skatalites most candid & comprehensive archive. This is an incredibly relaxed live set chock full of explosive and spontaneous solos. The guys really let it hang way out on this 1983 live recording.Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica. The band sounds EXACTLY like its 60's classic singles. "Big Trombone" is a rousing tribute to the late, great Don Drummond.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20
Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15
no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

Customer Reviews:
Waxman.......2007-05-22
I received the Franz Waxman Vol.1 in the mail and although the music is excellent, the tracks are all wrong. When I ordered Vol. #1 it clearly stated on the track list that track #1 is Anne of the Indies and track #7 is Possessed, but when I got the cd in the mail track #1 is Task Force and all the other tracks are different as well......what's going on here, can someone tell me? I would like to at least get the correct music on the cd I ordered.
