Mississippi's 3 Doors Down will forever be known as the "Kryptonite" band--a reference to the runaway hit from their debut disc, The Better Life--but not for a lack of trying on their part. Away from the Sun is pretty much everything one could want from a contemporary American rock record--terrifically catchy melodies, soaring choruses, meaty playing, and lyrics that reach for meaning. In other words, a disc crafted with radio in mind. The title track and album opener "When I'm Gone" are grand, wide-screen suites with big guitar and even bigger themes, while "Here Without You" is a fat, earnest weeper Bono would envy. In fact, there's nary a clunker in the bunch, although a certain sameness pervades the band's writing, a point exacerbated by vocalist Brad Arnold's everyman contralto. Still, 3 Doors Down juggle the hard/soft dynamic deftly, alternately recalling Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Train, and their ilk. --Kim Hughes
Customer Reviews:
They just rock.......2006-11-07
What can I say have had this CD for a couple of years and it just rocks saw them in concert so have to say the CD does sound better, they have a good studio crew. Honestly, saw Nickleback with them and they blew them away but in the same category they are a good addition to your collection do it just get it!!
Good album but rather redundant.......2005-10-17
A good album with lots of emotion and fairly good musicianship. Good tunes like here without you and away from the sun are the high points. This band is a bit redundant but holds on to keep me interested. It's hard to find much variety from song to song. Overall, okay album and I tend to listen to it quite a bit.
One of my fave CD's that I own.......2004-05-27
Words cannot describe how much I love this album! Most people would agree 'When I'm Gone' & 'Here Without You' are some really good songs. However songs such as 'The Road I'm On', 'Changes' & 'Away From The Sun' are just some of the notable mentions. Then again its hard to single out just some songs. From song number 1 down to the hidden track at the end, they are all great.
A must buy....Just my 2 cents worth :)
American Pride.......2003-11-04
Away From the Sun gives hope to the fact that there is still some quality music being produced that isn't prepackaged crapola. 3 Doors Down turns out a very heartfelt album here steeped in their trademark guitar riffs, bending harmonies and somber thoughtful lyrics that make you want to sing along !! 3DD definitely avoids the sophomoric jinx with tunes like "Here Without You", "Running Out of Days", "Away from the Sun" and of course the tune that has become an anthem for our troops overseas "When I'm Gone" !! I haven't been this jazzed about a "southern" rock band since Drivin' & Cryin'...and these guys have the same energy, their own distinctive sound and tremendous musicianship!! These guys belt out high quality rock that carries a distinctive sound that you can be proud to have in your collection.
3-1/2 stars -- Nothin' like a nice serving of 3DD.......2003-10-08
3 Doors Down's latest album Away From The Sun is a good piece of work. There are conscious lyrics, exceptional guitar work, and, of course, stellar vocals from Brad Arnold.
Things start off on the right foot with the leadoff single "When I'm Gone", and after that comes the introspective title track. Then it's on to "The Road I'm On", which, incidentally, may replace "Be Like That" as being my favorite song from them. And their latest song, "Here Without You", is a ballad that is sure to be a hit with their female fans, but it may have to grow on their male fans. I like the song already, though.
Why only 3-1/2 stars? Well, I really wasn't a big fan of the songs toward the end of the album. "Changes" isn't exactly my favorite song, and the production of "Sarah Yellin'" is really disorganized. Also, "Going Down In Flames" sounds like it was thrown together at the last minute.
But this is still a good album, and the hidden bonus track reminds you why you picked it up it the first place. I'll be looking forward to their next album.

Album Description
Reissue producer and annotator David Evans utilizes the Bluebird and Victor catalogs to create a fascinating documentary of the history of African-American religious music. This audio chronology spans from the plantation shout of slaves beginning to transform what they were learning in white churches of the 18th and 19th century ("Gabriel") all the way through to the 1940s' syncopated "rhythmic spiritual" sound of Newark's Southern Sons (1942's "I'm Free at Last," cited some two decades later by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in his speech at the March On Washington) and the Five Trumpets ("Preach My Word," a live 1949 performance in Atlanta that Dr. King may even have witnessed).
Among the highlights here is "Oh Death!" performed in 1927 the Pace Jubilee Singers, a song that was also popular among southern whites, as testified by Dr. Ralph Stanley's Grammy award-winning performance on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack. Also Rev. Isaiah Shelton and a group of sisters' 1927 release of the first version of "The Liar," whose refrain was recast into "Leave My Woman Alone" by Ray Charles in 1956.
Stellar solo performances include Marian Anderson's "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen" from 1924, and Paul Robeson's "Deep River" from 1927 were both arranged and published by Harry T. Burleigh, a protégé of Dvorak, who was an ardent supporter of Negro spirituals as the basis for "a great and noble school of music."
The Reverend W. Herbert Brewster of Memphis supplied songs freely to many top gospel singers, including Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, and Madame Ernestine Washington, who sang his "Holding On" with The Milleraires in 1954. Brewster attracted a considerable white following, including a young Elvis Presley, who, in a reversal of racial seating policies during slavery times, often attended Brewster's services in a section reserved for whites.
