Digital Empire: DJ Girl

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This anticipated project showcases some of the most brilliant contributions to the evolution of what we have dubbed dance music; contributions that happen to have been produced exclusively by women. Spanning the spectrum from progressive house, trance, breaks and techno, all 14 tracks on this compilation have proven to be both musically and culturally significant. Featuring mad cuts from international artists including New York trance godess Sandra Collins; San Francisco's funky house madam Charlotte the Baroness and The Angel, Digital Empire: DJ Girl pays tribute to a new wave of producers whose studio work has influenced the direction of electronic music in the late 1990s while also making the stuff accessible to the masses. - from DJ Girl liner notes, by Simona Rabinovitch, Editor at Revolution Magazine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Top of the Digital Empire line.......2007-01-10

This easily lands as the second best Digital Empire compilation in my opinion (Phuturism being the best). Most of the DJ work is top quality but not interesting enough to hold one's attention directly for more than five minutes. It's great driving music and works well at parties (or at least my kind of parties). But the previous reviewer has a point when he says only about half the songs catch attention (except I'm not partial to the When the Body Calls (Moovin' Mood Mix)). The content of the spoken word does not strike a chord with me. The CD begins and ends with fantastic work. It has driving Drum & Bass, bouncy Eurobeat, and some fancy sample mixes. But I paid about $3 for this CD and would do it again if I lost it.

3 out of 5 stars FIFTY-FIFTY.......2006-12-10

THE REASON I ENTITLED THIS REVIEW "50-50" IS BECAUSE I ONLY LIKED APPROXIMATELY 50% OF THE SONGS (6 OUT OF 14 TO BE EXACT). TO BE EVEN MORE BRUTALLY HONEST, ONLY 1 SONG REALLY STOOD OUT 100%, AND THAT SONG IS "WHEN THE BODY CALLS (MOVIN' MOOD MIX)" BY MARTHA CINADER. MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO FIND ANYTHING RECORDED BY THIS ARTIST IMMEDIATELY!!! MS. CINADER DOES A SPOKEN WORD TYPE OF THING WITH AN OVER EMPHASIS ON HEALING THOUGH WORDS & MUSIC. THE OTHER STANDOUTS WERE DJ SHORTEE ("R.E.M. STATE"); THE ANGEL ("STRANGE TIMES"); THE BARONESS & MR. ROSA ("ANODYNE FOR HEATHER PT. 2"); COLLETTE ("TRY HER FOR LOVE (SOMBIONX)"); AND FOR THE FUNKIEST SONG ON THIS ALL DJ GIRL COMPILATION CD: DJ BIONIC FEATURING ANIKA ("YOU DON'T LOVE ME"). SOME OF THE SONGS I COULD TAKE THEM OR LEAVE THEM (OUT OF THE ADDITIONAL 8 SONGS), BUT OVERALL I WOULD SAY THAT THE CD WAS WORTH IT FOR THE SIX GEMS THAT I'VE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED.
