This is pure corn-fed discontent. Former Iowa resident Arecee releases his second record, "Beating a Dead Horse", under NYC's Collekt Records in Brooklyn, New York. His dark melodic beats and thick delivery are a refreshing alternative to today's bubblegum thug rap and purist hip-hop. On the track titled 'Breathe Deep' we hear a glimpse of a tragic past romance gone sour while the up-beat 'Round and Round' features hip-hop heavyweight Supastition. In 'Life is Cartoons,' Arecee proclaims that "hip-hop is stupid"; after watching MTV, I couldn't agree more. Lush self produced beats and deeply personal lyrics make this release a breath of fresh air in today's copycat music industry. Arecee's first release, "Direction for Children" featuring Sage francis, is currently in stores.

if it walks, talks, and quacks like good hiphop well it must be. don't even think about it. just buy it. arecee's second official release shows what hard work and dedication bring to the struggling sound of current hip POP. if you need respite from the inexplicable crap flooding the scene and stinkin up the charts, this is your album.

I like electro, so when I saw this compilation in my local virigin megastore I figured why not give it a shot. To be truthful, i didnt expect much, since some of the songs that were on the disc were "the tried and true" freestyle classics that so many other compilations have. I was pleasantly surprised.

The classics on this compilation do not have the same tired sound you have heard over and over. These songs are not the radio edits you have heard a thousand times or even the extended edits that were played in the club back in the day, but they are instead new remixes. True to the name of the compilation the remixes here are done in electro fashion. They have a deep bass, vocal distortion effects in some parts, and most songs feature heavy use of reverb and echo effects on the vocals. The cd is also exceptionally clear and one can hear most of the complex multi layered background elements in the music very nicely. However, these remixes are not done in bad taste, you'll still recognize the songs. To get an idea of what I'm talking about compare the classic version of Judy Torres's Come Into My Arms foud on most cd's with the version found in this disc. The differences will be noticed but they're not distracting or overwhelming. The new version of Party Your Body is a little spare compared with the classic radio version and not to my liking, but most songs on here are good. The classic song I'll Be Lovin You (all my life) by Collage now has an even more electric and heavy bass than the original, and i thought it was pretty deep in the original to begin with!! But the new remix is still done well. ABY has a nice gentle lyrical voice, but i much prefer the original group versions of You'll Never Find Another Love and Come Get My Love. This cd also features some nice freestyle songs that many people may have forgotten over the years- an example of such a little gem is Sasha's So Good for You. Getaway by Stephanie and Lover Girl by Meg are other songs that are on here that are definitely not among the "played out" WKTU on-air freestyle list. Promise Me by Lil Suzy makes for an explosive start to the cd. Body Mechanic was a little corny and I could have done without it, the lyrics are funny but the track itself is more reminiscent to me of certain late disco songs than it is of freestyle even though i know it was made way after the era of disco was over. It is definitely the most "electro" song on the entire cd . One song that I was surprised to find on here was Cant We Try by Collage and Denine--this song in my mind is still relatively recent, it seems it wasn't that long ago it was on its first run on the radio and i was surprised to find it among much older freestyle "classics". Overall a nice collection, recommended.

How can you go wrong?- Stevie B, Lil Suzy, Judy Torres, Aby- If you like freestyle, this comp does not have any filler - just all hits by the defining stars of the Freestyle movement - Great mixes and completely enjoyable
