The multi-national Crammed Discs-Ziriguiboom-Six Degrees triumvirate is the force behind several tropical world salads, wherein classic and cutting-edge styles are shredded, tossed, re-imagined and transformed. Zuco 103 have released two previous exercises in frothy, mind-bending musical shape shifting. The Dutch-based trio consists of Lilian Vieira, a Brazilian-born chanteuse and co-composers Stefan Schmid (drums) and Stefan Kruger (aka Stuv, on keyboards), plus a tight back-up band that includes a sultry saxophone and a shimmering West African kora. The group's sonic language applies trip-hop, light jazz, electronica, subtle drum 'n' bass and other urban sounds to rich gleanings from the lead singer's ancestral samba, afoxé, bossa nova and forró, along with grooves from the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle-East. Vieira swerves between sophisticated, hallucinatory evocations of Billie Holiday and Elis Regina (the Judy Garland of Brazil), torrid belting and offhand, conversational raps with all the risqué flair of a born scene-stealer. The mix is further enhanced by the presence of two legendary figures--Roberto Menescal, an arranger-singer whose career began in Rio during the sixties--and the brilliant, wildly idiosyncratic Jamaican producer, songwriter and vocalist, Lee "Scratch" Perry. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Incredible CD! Very soulful, funky, eclectic, ect. Nice find........2006-12-14

Even though I don't speak the language, this CD is hot. I come from an old school, East Coast Hip Hop backround with intrests in Renaissance Jazz, Old school MTV 80's rock, NY House music, Acid Jazz, ect, but I've just always liked Soul in my music. This CD has a nice mix of all of the above. If you like producers like Vikter Duplaix, house music, Regge, Afro Cuban & Latin Jazz, ect, you'll like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars I Am Not Hip Enough for this..........2005-09-20

...but I love it anyway. Outrageously cool Brazilian pop lead by the sexy vocals of Lilian Vieira. Programming rules the day with lots of dance beats, bits of reggae & rap, more than a hint of funk. Big energy, great guest artists and fun-fun-fun for days. If this doesn't get you moving, check your pulse to make sure you're still breathing.

5 out of 5 stars The best album so far from this Euro-Brazilian dance band.......2005-09-07

I had mixed feelings about the last two albums by the Dutch-Brazilian electro-dance ensemble, but this record really got my toes tapping. On the giddy, exhiliarating opening track, "Na Magueira," singer Lilian Vieira bursts forth with an incandescent homage to the sprightly jazzy rhythm style of '60s samba-soul diva Elza Soares -- Vieira's version being draped in a contemporary techno-tinged sound mix... The band's roots in Europhilic dance music come back to the fore in a few of the house-ier tracks, but their explorations of African pop (on "Duele Le Le") and cameos by dub reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry make this disc their richest, most resonant album to date. Nice stuff; catchy and clever, and playful as well. Recommended!
