Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

You HAVE to be crazy not to love this album.......2007-06-14
Let me put it plainly. I have purchased this album in every medium-Vinyl, cassette, and CD just so I would NOT be without it. I will admit that I am a long time Stevie fan, but this release is just hot! Whenever I'm out and I see this compilation in the juke box, I immediately put something from it on, usually "All I Do", never a groan when the intro comes on, always "yes", "alright", or "that's what I'm talking about". I won't say it has something for everybody, but I believe it has something for most.
I Love It! And I'm not that much of a Stevie Wonder fan!.......2007-04-21
...and with a title like THAT, I'd better tread lightly. OK; the old Playboy Magazine/ancient hippies' phrase, a "mixed bag" comes to mind when reviewing this album. It is a "given" that Stevie is simply one of America's greatest national resources, musically, so very, very versitile. And on "July," he displays his natural prowess, creating a field of sound just by himself with keyboards, synths, and let not forget that he's a heckuva harmonica player and a drummer, too! Three songs really bear mentioning, though: A) "Happy Birthday," a tribute to Dr. King; B) "Master Blaster/Jammin'" - please forgive an old hippie for inquiring, but did Stevie or da Rasta Mon, Bob Marley, do this first? Nevertheless, "jamming," it IS, and if you're a musician, you know what I mean by THAT... And MY fave track is C) "Ain't Gonna Stand For It" - Stevie's doing Country here! A MARVELOUS, simply incredible track! A true Rastamon buddy of my guitar player and me played this for us one Saturday while we were...(ahem!) "doing other business," or something, and dared us, "OK: Play THIS!" After about 30 minutes, we HAD it, even to our Rasta buddy's scrutinization - and that evening, we had a gig at a COUNTRY place, and with only "minor alterations," we, the band, and the crowd LOVED it. And that's what GOOD MUSIC IS, folks: not some tunnel-visioned excess that only inner-city gangstas or (on the other end of the spectrum...like Ian Hunter said, "or is it only a few blocks away?") whiny, syrupy goons wearing cowboy hats can dig: it appealed(s!) to both crowds! I was there that weekend, I know! Here's to You, Stevie!
So much HOTTER THAN JULY you'll need flame retardant clothing !!!.......2007-03-29
Stevie Wonder scored a coup with his 1980 album entitled Hotter Than July. Hotter Than July gives us Stevie at his best with a distinctly early 80's flavor to his music that still rocks well and sways today! Just one listen to this CD proves it.
The CD opens with "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me;" this number has Stevie asking his woman to prove her love to him. The music rocks hard and I love those guitars! Stevie's voice is in excellent form, too! "All I Do" has a more R&B flavor as Stevie sings that he is falling deep and hard for his woman. It will charm you--for sure! The backup chorus enhances the beauty of this number, too. "Rocket Man" lets Stevie tell the story of a love gone awry; he uses the image of the two lovers rocketing toward the sky of love and then he falls suddenly back to earth as he expresses his chagrin over losing his woman. The drums and percussion do a great job on this number; and the strings add a lot to the musical arrangement as well.
"Master Blaster (Jammin')" has a catchy reggae beat as Stevie sings about peace coming to Zimbabwe. Sounds like a great reason to celebrate this song to me! Stevie's voice remains in excellent form and I liked the background vocals, too.
"Do Like You" tells the sweet story of a young boy who surprises everyone by being a naturally talented dancer; the beat rocks hard and the background vocals shine on in this number once again.
"Lately" is a rather sad but stunningly beautiful number about a love gone awry; and even though I hadn't listened to this album in years before yesterday I remembered the melody exactly the way I first heard it. "Lately" has a certain poignancy and beauty that I rarely hear in any song about love; the piano and Stevie's voice are sublime on this number! You feel truly sorry for Stevie's character as he sings this to perfection. "Lately" is a masterpiece that has been rather overlooked, in my opinion. Check this track out!
"Happy Birthday" opens with a great musical intro and this song stands as Stevie's solid gold Happy Birthday wish to the legendary Martin Luther King, Jr. Unfortunately, at the time this album was released Dr. King's birthday was not yet a national holiday; one can only imagine the joy Stevie must have felt when Dr. King got his holiday--this number is stunning as Stevie and the backup chorus harmonize to perfection. You will remember this joyous and relentless upbeat number for ages to come; it's that good. It received a good amount of air time when it was first released, too.
The liner notes give you the complete lyrics to the songs on this CD; and you get the song credits, too. The art work reflects great judgment and the digital remastering by Kevin Reeves leaves nothing to be desired! Great!
I recommend this CD as a "must have" for Stevie Wonder fans; and people who enjoy music from this time period will love this CD also.
Great job, Stevie Wonder! You're a genius! Thank you for everything!
Iconic Stevie.......2006-10-11
There's been a lot of debate over the years as to whether this is one of Stevie's best albums or one of his worst. I suppose it depends on one's point of view but even I have to admit I was taken slightly aback when I first listened to it.
But that was many years ago and it's grown on me, taking its rightful place as one of my favourite albums of all time. Stevie did go against a lot of what he had done before but he was just breaking new ground. I think it was a brave move on his part and personally, I think history has proved him right.
It's a solid set of ten songs and Stevie seems to try a different idea, a different approach with each of them. This is what attracted the criticism of the album being all over the place but while it's eclectic all right, the songs all fit together. Stevie ensures they do with the way he times one song to start immediately after the end of the one before it with no break - something he's done on many of his albums.
"All I Do" is notable for having Michael Jackson peforming background vocals, alongside Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Jamil Raheem and Betty Wright. That might not mean anything now but this was back in 1980 just after Jackson's "Off The Wall". (Michaelmania hadn't quite taken off but it was definitely on its launch pad). The only other person who was able to snag Jackson for backing vocal duties back then (apart from Quincy Jones, that is), was Kenny Rogers, for a song on his "Share My World" album.
"All I Do" has also been covered by many r&b singers in the intervening years but not as much as "Lately". This is easily one of Stevie's most beautiful songs and it's just him, his piano and bass synthesizer. The line "Lately I've been staring in the mirror" didn't really register until years later, when I was like, hang on, this man is blind.
Another of my favourites is "Do Like You", a funky dance tune featuring the voices of Stevie's (then young) children, Aisha and Keita. I had this album on cassette until recently when I got the CD. The first time I heard the sound of glass breaking at the end of the song, it sounded so real, I actually looked up to see what had broken. Bizarre.
The other songs of mention are "Master Blaster (Jammin')", which I didn't get then and still don't get now. I can see where Stevie is coming from but I really think reggae is best left to the experts.
"Cash In Your Face" deals with the unpleasant but undenialble issue of racism. The song tells the story of a young black family man looking for an apartment and being stonewalled by the landlord or real estate agent. The prospective tenant's voice is pleading and desperate, while the landlord's is cold and unmoving. I'd been listening to the album for several months before I realised that Stevie was singing both parts - one an octave lower than the other. Brilliant.
And then, finally, there's "Happy Birthday" and the only use I've found for it over the years is, as a DJ, playing it at birthday parties and getting the guests to dance around the celebrant. It works a treat every time. That said, this song was the vocalisation of the campaign Stevie started to get Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday recognised. Given that it's now a public holiday in the US, I'd say that all on its own makes this entire album pretty iconic. I'm not sure it's his best; "Songs In The Key Of Life" wins that honour hands down, but it's definitely (one of) his most culturally influential.
Remembering Martin.......2006-03-07
I purchased this CD because it has the tune "Happy Birthday" honoring Martin Luther King. I have the LP, but wanted to have a means of preserving this music.
The whole CD is excellent listening and vintage Stevie sounds.

Excelente.......2007-07-03
Amo este show e amei o DVD. O detalhe da razão dos pingos d'água na capa é fantástico.
A banda é demais, o show foi ótimo e a produção do DVD idem.
O cd bônus é ótimo tb.
Lots of energy!.......2007-06-28
This DVD is a really great introduction to the live Goo experience! They've put out some great songs over the years, but the albums can only give you so much. To really appreciate Goo you've got to see them live and if you can't get tickets, this is the next best thing. They've got a really great energy and despite the rain, they give their all to the show.
These Guys Rock in the Best Way!.......2007-05-07
This is the kind of concert you want to sit back, get up, jump around and then sit back again...it rocks!
I LOVE THE GOO GOO DOLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-01
OMG! I love these guys! They are so good! I mean so what? they changed record lables because they weren't getting nearly enough money from the success of "name". wouldn't you change? Thought so! i would think that if this collection was the original album versions instead of the live (which i actualy like better) versions, it would go platinum 32 times! If you wanna hear John say stuff like "oh [...] here we go" and "we're gonna keep going until this [...] stops", then listen to the cd, but if you wanna watch it with the hole family, watch the dvd. Oh nad also, if yo uever get the chance go to one of their concerts because there even better live!
The Ultimate Goo Goo Dolls CD! **********.......2006-10-01
I really love this Cd/Dvd. It really is a kind of greatest hits cd for the Goo Goo Dolls. It contains many great songs such as "Slide", "Black Balloon", and "Iris", just to name a few. The songs range from slow tempo to mid tempo to fast, and the band sounds great live...Johnny Rzeznik's deep and soothing voice along with everyone's fine playing to great lyrics and melodies make this a very enjoyable listen/watch. If you own only one Goo Goo Dolls cd, this should be the one. You really do get a wide variety of songs that span many albums and years. Why don't you give a listen to the song sampler on this site and decide for yourself...

Toronto-based Blue Rodeo was purveying its own alternately sunny, grizzled mix of country and rock before the alternative country boomlet made it fashionable, achieving stardom north of the border but nary a blink of recognition in the U.S. This self-produced 1993 album, recorded mostly live at the band's farm and released the following year in the U.S., brought them belated stateside fans partly because of the alternative country trend, partly because the set was more lyrical and explicit in its country accents. As transparent, and unapologetic, Neil Young fans, this was Blue Rodeo's Harvest, distinguished by the poles of its songwriting and singing team, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Cuddy's clear, soaring tenor provides a romantic foil for Keelor's smokier, rougher-edged vocals, and together they write brooding rock ballads ("5 Days in May"), ringing, deceptively uptempo loser's anthems ("Hasn't Hit Me Yet"), and convincing country ballads ("Bad Timing"), as well as spacier rock dirges ("What Is This Love," featuring Sarah McLachlan). --Sam Sutherland

Reminds me of Spain.......2006-04-15
Pretty good cd if you listen to it at the right time in your life.
A great Canadian band to remind me of my great canadian summer.......2005-12-30
This band and album is just amazing and I absolutely love it. Heard in whilst travelling around the rocky mountains in canada with moose travel. Then i went and bought it in Vancouver. I love it and listen to it all the time and when i'm sat in my house in the United Kingdom it reminds me of how amazing my time was in Canada and what a fab place it is and how i wich i was back there.xxx
Canadian GODS.......2005-12-25
Blue Rodeo, out of Canada where they are rightfully GODS, continues to fly under the US radar...what a shame, especially when one stacks Blue Rodeo against lesser talents. "5 Days In July" is the gemstone of this richly talented group. Combining elements of The Eagles, The Byrds, Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, twinges of psychedellic memories, 60's style chord work *which comes off VERY nice* and at times, vocal harmonies which bring a sweet hint of The Everly Brothers, this group, which can rock with the best or slow it down to a nice mellow, has a sound of their own. At once, the lyrics are memorable and catchy. The vocalists, Cuddy and Keelor, each bring their own qualities which never grow old with Cuddy having impressive range while Keelor brings at times, a nice raspiness with a clever edge. "Bad Timing", one of the great tunes off this gem, would soar on the country charts if given a chance. With the exception of "Til I Gain Control Again" *brilliantly covered earlier by Crsytal Gayle and later by Willie Nelson*, all the tunes are penned by Cuddy and Keelor, as are their efforts on other Blue Rodeo albums. I had the great pleasure to see/hear this remarkable group at The Ramshead Tavern in Annapolis, Maryland. They DID NOT disappoint. If you're looking for GREAT music outside the usual stuff played endlessly on formatted radio, this is a MUST! I would also suggest their DVD, "Burning Snowmen", which chronicles them over time. If you can, find a way to one of their concerts...
BLUE RODEO's...classic CD...Canadian country/folk/rock!.......2005-04-17
BLUE RODEO...were mainly influenced by Canadian born artists such as...NEIL YOUNG [Even...Amazon mentions...NEIL YOUNG]...and most of...THE BAND!
Canada [or what whould later become Canada] has been playing there own musical style for centuries , just as they did in the U.S.
The world's musical evolution just didn't stop at the 49th parallel or South of , TEXAS.
ROLLING STONE Magazine...wrongly wrote that...BLUE RODEO...plays a totally Americana style of music.
BLUE RODEO...had trouble getting U.S. airplay because their sound was so unique [Is it country? , is it pop? , is it rock?]
Canadian radio is not so strict about radio play formats , so they got pop , country and rock play in , CANADA!
Yes , there are some U.S. influences , some British ones and even some AUSTRALIAN ones...They also had CANADIAN ones which gave birth to...THE BAND[The Hawks/Robbie Robertson]...STEPPENWOLF[The Sparrows/Jerry Edmonton/Mars Bonfire]...NEIL YOUNG...GORDON LIGHTFOOT...JONI MITCHELL...HANK SNOW...and much later , even...SHANIA TWAIN...ect!
As we find out in their only history/live DVD called just * IN STEREOVISION * BLUE RODEO...had many influences and not just some American ones...And in the 1960s there was a TORONTO SOUND!
Recorded in Northern Ontario , Canada at a friend's farm , they invited...SARAH McLACHLAN...to enjoy the party and she would help sing the song...DARK ANGEL...and there is some video from that weekend , on the DVD * IN STEREOVISION *
DARK ANGEL...is a almost solo acustic...GREG KEELOR [Sarah McLachlan]...classic!
HASN'T HIT ME YET...You'll love this song by a lake and camp fire but don't have a broken heart...GREG...can write a great tune!
FIVE DAYS IN MAY...another...JIM CUDDY...country/folk classic.
BAD TIMING...A beautiful...JIM CUDDY...country love ballad.
CYNTHIA...JIM CUDDY...country/rockin out.
Those are just examples of the great songs on this fine CD , all with a mix of Canadian country and rock , keyboards , Neil Young , The Band / U.S. country , r and b and Elvis / The Beatles / The Bee Gees!
I would also highly recommend the DVD called * IN STEREOVISION *
For a musical history and live/tape of...BLUE RODEO...videos!
And some of their CDs...OUTSKIRTS...LOST TOGETHER...CASINO...PALACE OF GOLD...NOWHERE TO HERE...ARE YOU READY...and the 2 disc live CDs...JUST LIKE A VACATION!
Captures the "Essence" of Blue Rodeo.......2005-01-22
I have followed BR throughout their career, first seeing them by chance at Toronto's Ontario Place outdoor venue in the 80's. This CD captures a wonderous essence of this band and songwriting team... wow!
Although I also enjoy their more rockin stuff, I think this CD is their best, most consistent, and well-rounded... (though I still have a soft spot for their magical first CD... although now somewhat dated...except for "Try").
Cheers

It was fun.......2007-05-28
I went to this festival. The Allman Brothers were smokin' - as you might have guessed. Then, so was everyone else. Whipping Post was like a nuclear bomb pressure wave in the face.
Think I'll get this....fun for me - and my six year old son. He rocks hard.

Not bad at all.......2006-06-27
OK I do not know very much about the Allman Brothers but they really play excellent blues-based rock. Some of the songs are excellent. The sound is a bit murky in my opinion but that is due to the technique used at the time.
I didn't know this existed.......2006-03-16
I love this 2 cd set. The Allmans opened and closed the Atlanta International Pop Festival in 1970. What a music festival this must have been. Hendrix even played one of the days.
These 2 shows must have been special for the brothers because they were still trying to create a buzz about their music and this festival was right in their backyard. According to the notes the crowd grew to over half a million during the weekend. The brothers certainly played like they had something to prove. One reviewer complained that Duane's guitar was out of tune. Not to me. True, Duane's playing was all over the place - some licks worked and some didn't. The entire band seemed to be reaching as far as they could on every song. The results are a show not nearly as smooth and even as the Fillmore shows but that only adds to the beauty of this set and makes it a necessary purchase for the collector. And I am one fan who would have loved to have been able to attend this show.
Stand outs:
Duane first slide licks on Elizabeth Reed don't really seem like their on the mark but once he and Dickey lock into the guitar lines together (one on slide, the other straight lead) the experience becomes surreal. Interestingly, Elizabeth Reed is approached the same way during both shows.
Stormy Monday (2nd set, disc 2) rivals any other version I've heard by them. They manage to wring true blues out of every note.
Moutain Jam is great as always. You get the added guitar of Johnny Winter in the 2nd set but I have to agree with the reviewer who says that it's hard to tell he's there. Still, this is their version of Dark Star and is always amazing to hear.
Buy this along with Ludlow and the Fillmore shows and you have a perfect picture of how the brothers played when they were the tightest band in the world.
5 stars just for the retro artwork (I believe the cover is how the actual poster art work looked).
Two More Good Days for the Allmans.......2006-03-05
This two-CD set might well be subtitled "The Allman Brothers in All Their Glory and Then Some," as the first disc, clocking in at a colossal 79:55, still isn't long enough to capture all of the second part of the instrumental "Mountain Jam" - yet another testament to the ABB's tireless musical powers. That fadeout ultimately makes little difference, however, as "Mountain Jam," like many of the tracks here, is on both discs - comparison fanatics take note!
Recorded on July 3rd and 5th, 1970, these performances (before a crowd of over a quarter million) fall roughly midway between the LUDLOW GARAGE and AMERICAN UNIVERSITY sets both chronologically and musically. One can hear the beginnings of the astounding guitar solos which would dominate the famed 1971 Fillmore East performances, even as soon-to-be-discarded early numbers like "Every Hungry Woman" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" add welcome variety to the set list. The recording quality is excellent, allowing one to savor every soaring lick and earth-shaking chord. The Brothers still hadn't quite reached their Fillmore-era peak, but they were well on their way, and LIVE AT THE ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL is a riveting reminder of how many days and nights on the road it took to make this the greatest live band that's ever been. Four and a half stars for two and a half hours of sheer sonic genius!

Fine Soundtrack To A Vietnam War Epic.......2005-05-07
Although it was a very controversial film back in 1989 because of what many saw as its left-wing political approach to Vietnam, director Oliver Stone's BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, based on the true life story of paraplegic Vietnam vet Ron Kovic, vividly captured not only the terrible toll the war took on veterans and American civilians alike, but it also captured the socially turbulent era of the 1960s and early 1970s.
It manages to do so through a soundtrack that includes songs from that era, including Henry Mancini's "Moon River", the Shirelles' "Soldier Boy", Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl", and Don McLean's 8 1/2-minute epic "American Pie." But even better, it contains a stirring score by the ultimate Hollywood film score composer of our time, John Williams. Though it is sometimes overshadowed by the "hits", Williams' score greatly depicts the stirring patriotism of America in the early 1960s, the terror of war, and Kovic's rebirth from a blind patriot to a man trying to help America purge its soul of its war demons. The composer's wonderful use of the strings recalls Ralph Vaughan-Williams "Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis"; while the stirring main title theme, with an epic trumpet part for Tim Morrison, principal trumpet for Williams' Boston Pops Orchestra, is very Copland-influenced Americana. The closing use of the main theme here is very poignant but also stirringly hopeful.
I agree with a previous reviewer that more of Williams' scoring mastery should have been put on the soundtrack, though that's not to disparage the use of the hits from the period. That one mild flaw aside, however, the BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY soundtrack is a winner.
Simply one of the finest movie soundtracks ever recorded.......1999-09-03
A masterpiece of musical composition. Each of the tracks seem to compliment each other perfectly.
Absolute stunning musical feast.......1998-09-09
From mainstream American classic rock anthems to superb John Williams musical score - really brings the Vietnam saga back into stricking focus. This is definitely my all time favourite rock anthology and the Williams tracks are a 'spine chillingly' awesome bonus.

The famously rich Philadelphia strings continue to sound terrific in Tchaikovsky, while the expert winds and brass shine on this disc. The opening fanfare, in which Eschenbach takes a more leisurely and less doom-laden approach than we hear from most Russian conductors, tells us his interpretation will emphasize structural balance over shorter-term thrills. Not that excitement is lacking, but this is a cooler, less overtly emotional approach that some may find a good complement to more-emotional versions in the catalogue. Eschenbach's reading also displays more-relaxed tempos than are usually heard, while bringing out myriad welcome details that might otherwise be lost. Still, despite comparable timings, Bernstein's New York Philharmonic performance has more rhythmic snap and excitement, while Mravinsky's classic Leningrad version remains in a class by itself. Eschenbach is at the piano for the final six months of The Seasons, reminding us that he was a world-class pianist before he turned to conducting. He displays keyboard command of Tchaikovsky's charming vignettes of the months, much as he did in his traversal of the first six of the set when coupled with his recording of the Tchaikovsky Fifth. --Dan Davis

The best of the best........2007-07-03
I have all of the current SACD Multichannel hybrids of this Symphony and have been waiting for the right one. I have been disappointed in all of the current SACD's and have been waiting for Telarc to record a new SACD of this.
They have apparently been restricted with budget for new classical recordings
and we'll have to wait. This Ondine recording is very good and better than all of the current offerings. The technical recording aspects and the performance are very good. It is done with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
It will probably be the best availble until Telarc finally get it to the top of their recording list.

Album Description
A classic July 4th concert is brought to life in HDCD Sound on the first of three historic live releases celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. Drawn from arguably the band's strongest tour of their last 15 years on the road, the two-disc Truckin' Up To Buffalo features the entire concert at Rich Stadium on July 4, 1989. Favorites include "Bertha," "Touch Of Grey," "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," "Morning Dew," and "U.S. Blues."
Customer Reviews:
Another old deadhead's review.......2007-03-15
I was this concert, and it was amazing! I would go back to the year 1963 and do all the traveling again. I would follow the grateful dead for the rest of my life if I could, i kid you not. But this concert was awesome, and during the song "looks like rain", it actually rained! i was at just about every dead show for 30 years, and it never rained when they it. definetly get this, it is a must have for anybody who even half likes the grateful dead.
past their prime.......2007-01-27
I'm was born and raised in Buffalo, but I was mostly disappointed with this set. Almost all of the tunes were performed much more enthusiastically on previous CDs from the 70's. By Dead standards, they seem almost listless at times on this set. I do like the cover artwork, though.
Average Show from 1989.......2007-01-25
This is not the best show from 1989, far from it.
Many would argue the best shows are in the Fall Tour (Hampton, Miami, Meadowlands, perhaps Philly as well). The Alpine shows are better (IMHO) and there are some shows from earlier in the year in Feb. & April that easily surpass this show.
With that said, this is still a very good show and a pleasure to listen to and watch. But one of the must haves of the Grateful Dead? No.
A classic show from one of the band's last great years.......2006-12-02
One of the band's great 80's concerts and it's also available on DVD. This is both worthwhile on cd and DVD. Many of the songs on here are near definitive vrsions from that year. Starting with a blowaway Bertha -> Greatest Story thru the pounding US Blues encore. The only weak spot is I Will Take You Home and that probably because I've never really liked that song
Dead Deliver in Classic Late-Period Show.......2006-03-09
I'm no Dead-at-all-costs fanatic, though I appreciate the band, Jerry's evident musicianship, and have a dozen or so live releases, most of the studio albums, and a bunch of the excellent reissue series of Jerry's solo live and studio work.
This is definitely one of the best live shows of the latter period. Jerry's voice and guitar are in fine, efficient (for Jerry) form, the band is energetic and lively, the set list interesting. I agree with the reviewer who noted the rythmic and harmonic sophistication of Phil Lesh's bass on this gig -- just listen to him on "Terrapin Station" or the beautiful "Ship of Fools."
Although Dead fans have heard "Row Jimmy Row" many times and in many different settings, I found this one particularly poignant and touching, coming as it does on the 4th of July and near the end of the long strange trip this amazing American musical, cultural, and spiritual force took us on.

Album Description
This re-issue falls on the heels of Miranda's massively successful feature length film, "Me And You And Everyone We Know", which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and received a special jury prize for originality of vision. This record showcases Miranda's powerful believability to her made-up stories of traveling back in time to prevent her parents from meeting, to her own habitual lying. July has no genre and no boundaries. Listen with headphones in the dark of your room at night.
Customer Reviews:
The hidden track is titled "Diagnostic" ..........2000-06-01
Miranda July has been quoted as calling herself an "entertainer," but she's more like a hypnotist - I've listened to "10 Million Hours a Mile" more times than I can count. Her first full-length album has more tracks than her second, "The Binet-Simon Test," and a fresher, less synthesized believability to her made-up stories of traveling back in time to prevent her parents from meeting ('Hotel Voulez-Vous') to her own habitual lying ('How's My Driving?'). Definitely buy this album, regardless of the kind of music you normally listen to. Miranda July has no genre and no boundaries. Listen with headphones in the dark of your room at night.
