4 out of 5 stars A brilliant debut from an underappreciated ska band........2006-10-06

This album really stood out to me over ten years ago when I first got it, and it still shines with a soulful unique pop ska sound today. The sound is true to ska music and seems to channel a lot of 2 Tone influence throughout. I think that the song writing and they lyrics really stand out from a lot of the goofier/drunken fratdork types that started "ska" bands in the late 90s. The lyrics are very powerful and thoughtful and sung with a wondeful sort of undefinable passion you just don't hear much. There are a lot of experimental ideas, although you can't quite call it art-ska there are plenty of rythym variations/tempo changes/secondary non-ska influences that it just all really feels fresh in a scene that can get a little too formulaic at times.

This band has connections to The Mudsharks and to Let's Go Bowling, both very solid bands in the scene on their own right. Check them out, and definately don't pass up this CD as I definately consider it a rare gem of the 3rd wave.

4 out of 5 stars great record but not at that price.......2006-05-29

5 out of 5 stars Abstract? He barely spits a simile..........2003-11-06

Is there a six I can give this album, and why not? This album's production (by Blueprint) is simply put, amazing. Nothing too OUT there, just plain straight up fresh beats that fits Illogic's style and intent for this project perfectly. This album shows the originality and maturity independent artists can have. If I was just reviewing this due to the beats it would get a five, but what captivates me is the lyricism from Illogic. He instantly became high amongst my favorite emcees upon hearing his classic "Unforseen Shadows" album that I accidentally stumbled upon. The level he has raised his vocals here is outright insane. Although this was supposed to be an EP, it turned out even better as an LP, and I doubt the spoken word would've been included.

One review compared this guy to Jay-Z?! Why, because he has confidence that what he says no "pop" rapper could ever dream about writing? Because he accuses the industry of releasing (for the most part today) nonsense to the masses? It's not that industry rappers can't spit, it's that alot of them seem to be doing it as a gimmick JUST to cash in, that's not emceeing. I can see how Blueprint's occasional smirky comments may make it seem like they're "stuck" on themselves (especially on "break bread"), but listen to the content! Listen to what Illogic is saying! Better yet, check out Blueprint's solo album and co-ops with Greenhouse Effect and Soul Position (with RJD2).

There's ten minutes of spoken word, although slightly dry if you were expecting some kind of "Saul Williams" or "Sekou da Misfit" quality slam content, but excellent in its own right at the end of the album. The writings are just plain honest heart felt and inspiring poetry. I'm sorry, but this is just another quality of rhyming that we're dealing with here. This man rhymes at a level unseen to most heads. And the fact that I can play this album to any person who HATES hiphop (or what theyve deduced as hiphop from mainstream hip-pop) and they instantly have RESPECT for the art. They actually get to see hiphop as an ART and not just as "entertainment".

This emcee sets a standard not unlike KRS-ONE, and if he keeps releasing albums of this caliber, I have no doubt he will attain the title of one of the top UNSEEN emcees (which some feel, including myself, that he's already there) of all time. Head's feelin this look out for his more personal, "Write to Death Vol. I" album.

5 out of 5 stars A real poet in hip hop.......2003-10-24

Illogic's definitely got my attention. The man turns his music into pure poetry. After buying this cd about a year ago, I can't wait for this guy to develop a little more and release a full length album. And by full length, I'm not talking under 10 songs. Illogic is unique to the game. His flow is spectacular. His lyrics are deep and abstract. His whole voice and presence, however, aren't what some would call "nerd rap". He isn't a nerd, like some other rappers out there, and his flows are a testament to that.
Blueprint, the Producer, also impressed me a lot with the beats on the album. For some, they may be somewhat hard to sink into. Once you get into them, however, the beats grow on you.
The decent tracks here are Got Lyrics? and Day by day. Got Lyrics? has a neat horn in the backround and a cool chorus, but Illogic's rapping is the highlight. Day by Day features a nice, somber, and smooth beat over more Illogic flows.
The standout tracks, however, are Stop Lying and screenplay. I'm not even going to try to explain how well concieved these songs are, even though that's kinda the point of this review. These tracks prove that when Illogic is at his best, and when blueprint is at his best, these two are some of the hottest artists in the industry. Illogic is a poet's poet. It's like having a modern day Robert frost on the mic. Get this cd. He beats out Aesop rock any day of the week. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Got lyrics? Yes. Got beats? Yes. Perfect Album? Yes........2002-04-22

First heard him on the Aesop Rock - Labor Days album. I read lots of reviews on this album, most of which labeled it a masterpiece. I bought the album, listened to it, loved it, and the rest is history. The new vinyl pressing has an extra song with Aesop Rock, the song is incredable but its only on the vinyl version. I dont give out 5 star ratings that easy, so I really like this album. After hearing the track with Blueprint I'm about to order Greenhouse Effect.

4 out of 5 stars solid performance from the underground's Jay-Z.......2002-03-30

Hate me for comparing Illogic to Jay-Z, but they have a lot in common. Both are talented MCs with big mic presence and lots of attitude. While Jay-Z brags about his money and his women, Illogic brags about his mic skills and generally big-ups himself and his dj. Both have a laid-back attitude that says, "I have nothing to prove." In short, both are long on personality but short on ideas.

And sometimes, that's just fine. This is a nice album with classy, flawless beats by Blueprint (who is a pretty decent MC too). Illogic does his thing with clockwork precision and the confidence of a pro. There's nothing really experimental here (except for a pretty abstract piece of spoken-word at the end of the album), just a solid block of catchy, smart, head-nodding beats and some fairly impressive rhyme-flipping.

One nice thing about this album, by the way, is its length. No huge intros, no wandering skits, no filler. Just one tight song after another. The spoken word at the end is pretty cool too, even if you're not really into that kind of thing.

Illogic is not the savior of hip-hop but he's helping to keep it alive, and with Blueprint backing him he's a force to be reckoned with. This isn't an innovative album but it has a tightness and quality that make it repeat-worthy. 3.5 stars is probably a more accurate rating, but four isn't stretching things too much. If you're new to underground hip-hop and you want something that's not too far out, this is a good place to start.

    5 out of 5 stars A very good band.......2004-08-04

5 out of 5 stars How messed up is the Music Industry?.......2004-02-27

Short and sweet: This is a great album no mater what you label it, pop, power pop, whatever. It's just a damn shame that we are forced to listen to that RAP CRAP when stuff like this is out there, no wait it's not available at this time. WAY TOO BAD!

    5 out of 5 stars 2001 top ten.......2001-12-08

I have to agree with the reviews I have read. This cd is strong from top to bottom. There are so many good songs on it that it's hard to pick a favorite( Sheepwalking and Yes World are great though). There is no question this cd should make a lot of top 10 list. It certainly deserves it. What a superb effort!

5 out of 5 stars Get it! You won't be sorry.......2001-11-29

I read a review of this CD in Phoenix's New Times magazine and I am always looking for new music and groups. Heard some samples from the CD on The Mockers web site and knew I had to get it. This CD is wonderful. I'm a sucker for great pop music and this is it. I've seen a lot of references to this being power pop music, if this is power pop keep it coming Mockers! The CD goes from home, to car, to work and back.
Living in the Holland Tunnel is filled with catchy tunes, great guitar work, excellant production work, and clever lyrics. The music has a timeless quality to it. The Mockers seem to be very influenced by the Beatles, Kinks, Zombies, Big Star, and the Beach Boys to name a few.
The song "Pearly Gates" is worth buying the CD for alone -- an outstanding song! Other favorites are "Coronation" and "Sheepwalking" (gotta love that title!). All the songs are great I hate to just narrow down the list to the above songs.
This is clearly one of the great CDs to come out in 2001. It is on my top 5 list for 2001 to be sure.
RUN OUT AND BUY IT! You're gonna love it especially if you love great "power pop" music! Take a chance, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The best power/jangle pop record of the year.......2001-09-21

Awesome record! What a collection of tunes! They're all great but "Coronation" really makes an impression. Unusual song structure! How many songs begin with the chorus? The middle bridge section is straight out of "Pet Sounds" and Funk #50 (a play on The James Gang Funk #49?) opens with a tip of the hat from Klatuu's "Calling Occupants", while the verse begins with a quote from "Let's Spend the Night Together". While they are unique songs, they remind you of every glorious pop tune you've ever heard. Layered harmonies, clever lyrics, melodic guitars; they got it all! I hear whispers of Bobby Sutliff, (another guy produced by Mitch Easter), The Windbreakers, Badfinger, Raspberries, The Cavedogs, The Three O'Clock, Color Me Gone, Guadalcanal Diary, DB's, Big Star, Pez Band, etc., etc. There's even a dab of 70's skinny-tie pop rolled in...Superb production by Mitch Easter (as usual). The guitar tone is outstanding, especially on "More Important Things"; it's somewhere just this side of Bowie's "Suffragette City". If you like any of the aforementioned bands, you're gonna *LOVE* this CD.
