I don't like this album, it is extremely boring. I'm not holding it to comparison to anything prior by Amon Tobin. I don't like it because I found myself fast fowarding through parts in search for something more.

I wanted the grass to get greener and this was never the case. I also search for something in music that I might enjoy, or even a singular sound that I can sample and exploit.

This album failed to entertain me, or make me feel energized. Even with the hope of discovering some cool sounds it is a total let down.

I wonder if he played all those random instruments. The percussion sounds very natural, I would find it hard to believe they were all from a computer program, it would probably be easier to just record the drums and edit them afterwards. There's lots of stuff you miss listening to this the first few times around, lots of little details in the sound.
There's some symphony stuff going on as well, guitars too, chimes, synthesizers, vocals, pretty much everything... and none of it sounds familiar. Once all this settles in you have a very replayable CD.

When I first heard Amon Tobin I listened to Out From Out Where and then bought his others. They were all good, but this one stands out a little because the structures of the songs are pretty random, but they make sense somehow. I barely notice any repetition on Foley Room. If I listen to Permutation or Bricolage it is very noticable by comparison.

Electronic music is a genre with a lot of sub-genres and is expanding all the time. It's difficult because like computers themselves, electronic music is always getting updated and you have to keep up with the times. However some people are continually able to bring something fresh that has a new sound. This is one of those cds that actually gets better the 4th or 5th time around.

Foley Room is an industrial breakbeat / drum-n-bass symphony. Amon Tobin not only improves but he vastly raises the bar every single time he releases an album. You know this is the man who made Out from Outwhere and Permutation right away but what you cannot prepare for is the epic nature in which he rings in 2007 with music that is 2307.

I have a deep love for the album format and 'Foley Room' further defines this affection. It allows for structure and limitations to encourage discipline and creativity. The music here is like the intensity of a beautifully emotional 500 lb. beast trapped within a metal cage where he barely fits and has only one small air hole. He is angry and dents the structure while trying to free himself. He becomes hopeless realizing this is impossible. He ponders his life, becomes bitter and angry again. Somehow, we feel like he got himself into this.

Take that for what you will, but the only album I can compare this to is 'Endtroducing...' and that is a stretch because this is much more intense and the songs are mostly shorter in length (my only gripe because these songs could be of brilliantly epic length to match the mood). But the darkness and emotion is evident and delves deeper into actual human psyche than I'd say nearly ALL of, at least, electronic music.

Amon Tobin has officially been ordained into the vanguard of music's elite.

Having been a fan of the Art of Noise in the 80's, it is a very high bar that reaches my ears these days, and Amon Tobin has done it. His incidental style, combined with crafty rhythms and a high degree of acoustic precision create something between acid jazz and techno, a very listenable, wordless play on the human spirit.

At the height of Beatlemania, the Disney folks were teaching kids how to really swing with this soundtrack to their adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Of course, it's Phil Harris (the voice of everyone's favorite hipster bear Baloo) who steals the show with the original slacker anthem, "The Bare Necessities," but his scat match with an inspired Louis Prima on "I Wan'na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" is also not to be missed. Songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman--who clearly enjoyed playing the irony card on songs like "Trust in Me (The Python's Song)" and "That's What Friends Are For" (The Vulture Song)"--offer entertaining reminiscences about the project in a 12-minute bonus track. George Bruns's wonderful underscore, a couple early song demos, and two post-soundtrack Baloo numbers round out a collection that suggests, in the most charming way imaginable, that it really is a jungle out there. --Bill Forman

this favorite lives on.......2006-08-31

This was my favorite movie and now it is my son's. This CD is the musical sound track so it has background music. Sometimes my son wants to listen to it (he know's the scene sequence pretty well) and sometimes just the big hits. The CD has allowed me to redirect the Jungle Book demand/chant from movie to music and we can avoid getting plugged into the TV all day. The interview at the end is pretty interesting too.

As much as I try to think of one, I can't picture a more fun Disney soundtrack than "Jungle Book". As a matter of fact, it's even hard to think of a happier soundtrack altogether. And the truth is, the music is so much at the heart of this amazingly fun Disney classic, that they are almost one and the same. There's no listening to the songs in here, without jumping up and down like Baloo, Mowgli and Bagheera. It is a highly recommendable album and movie combo, indeed one of those "bare necessities"! :)

Anyone who caught Mocean Worker's previous release, Home Movies from the Brainforest, will no doubt be more than willing to take part in this action-packed sonic adventure teeming with impenetrable rhythms, mesmerizing loops, and out-of-the-blue musical scene changes. Adam Dorn does more than build some of the grooviest drum & bass into a blatantly jazz-era soundscape; the New York based artist pushes analog and digital-powered synths into the mix, along with some highly effective and masterfully understated samples. Midway into "Detonator," the second track on this his debut release on the Palm Pictures label, Dorn decides to throw a hyperspeed big-band section into a groove dominated by a controlling monotone. Equally unexpected, but from the other end of the spectrum, is a plaintive line that effectively halts the progress of a highly percussive and strings-laden song. The delightfully resonant "Boba Fett" closes out this much-anticipated work. --Paul Clark

One of the very few drum and bass CDs I like........2000-05-20

I generally don't like drum and bass. In fact this is one of the few CD's of the few dozen or so I `ve tried that I like. MW generally doesn't program his drums too fast or dark, and unlike what I've heard (as a d'n'b newbie) the beats blend into the tracks well. It doesn't sound like programmed beats with melodies or instruments added afterwards. What I find especially compelling is his use of jazz, blues, piano, and old samples as the basis to his music. It contrasts well without fighting the percussion. Considering that, it gets a 4 star recommendation.

It starts well with the dark, melancholy "Rene M," and then goes to "Detonator," the cut he made a music video for. "Detonator" starts off as typical d'n'b (distorted drums and snaky baseline,), then kicks into this 60's chase scene horn-frenzy about two minutes in to cool effect. Track 3 "Jello Dart" is pretty good,. "Counts, Dukes & Strays" follows and is excellent, using concise, sparse jazz samples to a laid back hipster beat. "Mycroft," track 5, is the first track I don't like- that squiggly, deep baseline sound of d'n'b is grating, and this has it. "Heaven" is blues to a beat that made Beastie Boys' Check Your Head come to mind. "Motion Booty" despite its title is really a companion piece to "Rene M," and "Times of Danger" brings back the same car chase vibe s "Detonator." The last track is pretty bad, but at least this is the place to put it.

There you have it, 8 of 10 are good, it's got 4-5 strong hits, and it's one of the drum and bass CDs I like enough to keep. One last note, the packaging is first rate and classy; it's nice to see an artist who takes pride in these little details.

For months now, I've regarded Adam F's "Colours" as the best blend of D&B, Jungle, R&B, Jazz, and Trance. Finally, there's another contender. Buy this disc - and if you've never heard Adam F, get that too. Mocean Worker ranks even (and sometimes over) anything by Metalheadz. I'm a fan.. and can't wait to see what comes next from this brilliant artist.

Its a little over the top in parts for me, but there's no denying that Dorn knows what he's about. It is not as experimental as the likes of Autechre, Richard James/Aphex, and it isn't as slyly funky as Amon Tobin's stuff or the recent Funki Porcini, but Dorn gets quite a psychedelic groove going. Dorn also is pretty imaginative in his rythmic use and placement of samples. He hasn't quite ascended Mt. Olympus yet, but he's getting real close. Recommended.

This man is definitely in touch with the stuff dreams are made of, and continues to improve on his masterful skills following his first release "Home Movies from the Brainforest." This latest stuff will take you out of your hum-drum here and now, to a bass-and-drum realm of deeeelicious grooves. My sincerest thanks go out to Mocean Worker for a very moving new work of art.

Here's something you didn't know about Van Hunt: Randy Jackson is his manager. Which says a lot about the "American Idol" judge's prime-time panning of pitchy would-be Stevie Wonders-- mainly, that he knows what he's talking about. If there is still a neo-soul show to be stolen, Van Hunt, for sure, has made off with it: This sophomore effort, with well-spaced nods to Prince, Curtis Mayfield, and the Isley Brothers, is way weightier than anything Maxwell or D'Angelo ever attempted and every bit as stylish… maybe more so. But what's most surprising is the disc's depth. Van Hunt knows his way around a smooth seduction--look no further than track two, "If I Take You Home (Upon ...)," which earns an A in that category--but he also has a little something to contribute to the modern rock conversation (the Kravitz-esque "Ride, Ride, Ride"), and he won't duck associations with disco ("The Thrill of This Love"), either. Even '80s-revivalism, as demonstrated here by "At the End of a Slow Dance," doesn't prove too great a challenge. Tie it all up with a bow (or, this being Van Hunt, maybe an ascot) and you still get a solidly singular vision. That is the magic of Van Hunt and what makes him, in alt-soul circles, the man. --Tammy La Gorce

Not as great as the first. But it's OK........2007-05-31

The only songs I really don't care for here are probably Ride, Ride, Ride and At The End Of A Slow Dance. They're definitely not my style.

But I do like Daredevil, Baby. I've had this CD since May 13th, 2006 and when I first heard it, I didn't know what to make of it, but a while later, I ended up liking the song. The production on No Sense of Crime is nice and playful, the lyrics, somewhat relatable. Mean Sleep is a decent song (though I can't compare to Lenny's because I've never heard it before) and Hot Stage Lights has a killer vibe during the chorus (or pre-chorus, I'm not sure :P). I can't get enough of it.

Another note that I must get through to you is that Van Hunt's lyrics have always been amongst the best and most descriptive (when he tries). See the intro to The Thrill Of This Love which has a slightly dreamy feel to it. It's not the greatest song otherwise, but it's decent. The album closes with The Night Is Young where Van Hunt struggles with the thought of where he is at the point of his life: getting older, reminiscing about the past, etc. It has a bit of a melancholy feel to it, but not overly so.

Things that could've been left off the album completely:

Ride, Ride, Ride and the intro as well as the interlude; the latter two are pretty much Van Hunt and some guy being as silly as possible. Not bad, but not necessary either.

Overall, there are about 4 songs that I enjoyed thoroughly (minus the intro and interlude).

If you want to get to know Van Hunt, I'd start with his far superior album, Van Hunt and then if he grabs you, get On The Jungle Floor. Be warned though, this album is much edgier, if that's your thing. To be honest though, I think this CD is a BORDERLINE sophomore slump. Fewer songs here grabbed me like they did with his self-titled album.

Great work!.......2007-05-19

Others have given better reviews and descriptions of this album. But I must say that this guy is really talented and I hope you soul music lovers out there will check this album out. He uses various different musical styles to good effect(not too many artists can pull that off when you think about it). I love "Character", "Being a Girl" (I'm surprised I haven't heard this playing on the radio), and "If I Take You Home" (this track is strangely reminds me of a Prince record). I stumbled on this album and I strongly recommend it.

We definitely need more soulful artists like Van Hunt recognized and listened to more. It's music that's deep and fun at the same time.
Most people are living their lives without any substance. This kind of music helps bring substance back into our lives without sacrificing any of your enjoyment.
As much as I enjoy this cd, I don't think it's as good as Van Hunt's self-titled first album. That probably has to do with the fact that he aligned himself with American Idol Randy Jackson to help produce this album.

Should Be On Many 2006 Album Of The Year Lists........2006-11-05

Slick, funky, retro, sexy, smart and soulful all come to mind when listening to Van Hunt's sophomore effort, 'On The Jungle Floor'. Early Prince also comes to mind and THAT is also a good thing.

Opening Track "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is a perfect male response to Lisa Lisa's 80's hit of a similar name. His vocal stylings go from sleek falsetto on the first track to a more deeper and dark style on the verses for the second track "Hot Stage Lights" but he goes back to his amazing falsetto for the chorus. Van Hunt and Nikka Costa share the mic on "Mean Sleep" and create a soulful, steamy duet. The chorus "I had a mean sleep over you, and it hurts coming back to life" makes this the perfect song to play for that special someone.

There's a 70's funk sound present in many of the tracks of this album and the inspiration goes even further back a decade or 2 where the delightfully innocent yet modern "At The End Of A Slow Dance" makes you wish you could go back to a time where partners and slow dancing were the 'thing'.

If you're looking for less mainstream, less radio, and more quality with tight production reminiscent of the sounds of Prince, Maxwell, and even the better stuff from OutKast, then definitely give this album a shot.

The Cinematic Orchestra has always been a favorite of mine. Motion is an awesome work that's worth every cent. The music is cutting edge, intense and spiritual. These songs put me in a great mood every time I listen to it, and it stays in my cd player. Get it, the cd is fantastic!

Jazzed up break beats.......2006-08-15

This is a gem. Pure and simple.
The smokey lounge atmosphere of "Durian" introduces you to its quite melancholie of a jazz based ensemble and touches with varying intensity of downtempo, Bristol sound ("Channel 1 suite" loop a la Portishead), and nervous break beats with live like drumming. The trumpet has either sad distilled tones ("Durian") or is nervous ("Channel..."). Haunting female vocales have this far away feel ("Diabolus") or a stronger appeal, more demanding (N.Simone impression in "Durian"). The percussion is energetic (ride cymbal getting tougher as "Channel..." goes) or includes playful soft rim shots ("Ode to the Big Sea" with it's intro classic Brubeck style). "Diabolus" has a sustained background brass which creates an impression of questioning notes which is reinforced by the loop of the bass.
It's all skillfuly blended and is always sustained with an almost dangerous feel easily recognizable in underground modern day trip hop et al. But the gorgeous classic references of the edgy Blue note years makes it audible again and again just like the stubborn loops which create the texture of its density. The drawling voices are countered by dynamic and true to life drumming explosions. It will certainely satisfy curious ears and jazz amateurs who wish to extend their audio portfolio to other areas, especially for those broken in to hard bop and tolerant towards talented groups like Massive Attack or Skalpel. In all it's dreamy but challenging audio spiel...it has that quality of unexpectedly weaving the immediately agreable of warm jazz with the shamelessly rebelious of this modern day's electronic risk taking endeavours. It's a jazzed up version of break beats...or maybe the reverse.

Eclectic Jazzy Mambo !!.......2003-10-22

I was excited to learn that The Cinematic Orchestra had more albums other than "Motion". After reading the reviews, it seems this album was the lower on the totem pole, however, this album is excellent. It's jazzy, the rhythm grabs you, and it ties together perfectly with a electronic feel. This is an album for anyone who appriciates contemporary jazz. Every track is worth listening to, and it doesn't get old. I am very ambitious about purchasing thier other albums after hearing this one.

I bought this on a lark. I agree with one of the reviewers that described this as underground jazz in a smoky bar room. It fits! The vocalist really adds a mourning effect to the record. The ensemble plays are very good. If I were to voice any complaint, it would be that there is not enough solo-ing in it. It grows on you in a plesant way. I make a lot of tapes and these cuts are good mood transitioners. Dark, foreboarding and expressive. Great spin!

If techno ever does become the sound of young America, don't expect Richard James to be its poster boy, deserving though he may be. A native of Cornwall, England, James is obsessed with the mechanics of music making: As a kid, he took apart and reassembled the living room piano. Under the names Aphex Twin, Polygon Window, AFX, and other aliases too numerous to mention, he showed that he could make entire tracks with the sounds produced by tapping on a Coke can. Like the indie rockers of yore, he revels in his marginality because of the creative freedom it gives him. His full-length U.S. debut, Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), includes some of the most serene sounds this side of the Orb, but his favorite hobby is the not-at-all-blissful pastime of driving a Daimler Ferret Mark 3 tank through his parents' backyard.

None of his recordings have captured the competing impulses to lull you to sleep and blast out your eardrums as well as Richard D. James, his third and best album. As the title indicates, James has turned inward for inspiration, painting aural pictures of real and imagined scenes from his west country childhood. "Goongumpas" is a fanciful, playful tune that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As his adventures with the family upright indicate, James was a bit of a devil even as a child. "Beetles" is the sound of a boy frying bugs on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass, and "To Cure a Weakling Child" shows flashes of the sort of sadism found only on preschool playgrounds. If you still doubt that young Richard developed early on, the romantic Nino Rota-style strings on "Girl/Boy Song" are just made for passionate seductions, and the tune appears in three mixes, each one hot and hornier than the one before.

The raucous undercurrents of even his calmest tunes and the sources of many of his most common sounds are what link James to the rock tradition. With Richard D. Besides the award for one of the worst covers ever, Richard D. James Album is actually really good. Granted, I failed to see what's so ______ good about it, but I still think it's essential. It shows that electronic music actually takes talent to create.

THe music? Like I say, samples always HELP, but they sure don't always means it's bad or good. Fortunatly, I had no trouble picking up the music. It's got good atmosphere, especially on songs like Beetles and Milkman. I still haven't figured out how they relate to himself and his life. That's the main theme, hence the title. The songs are a hit or miss basically, you will either like them or you won't THe beats aren't regular beats (like Fatboy Slim

It's really really cool, but it's still not exactly the best album ever. I like You've Come A Long Way, Baby, a lot better, but this is great electronic music. _____ electronic music haters. I first discovered this cd while working in a music store. This cd is not for the weak hearted. One major thing I noticed in titles such as the Boy/Girl song is that he never uses the same loop twice. The background will stay steady but everything around it will move all over the place, like putting bethoven in a cement mixer. I don't want to scare you away from this album because it is a definate worth while buy but to truely do this cd justice you need to strap on a good set of headphones and hang on for a glorius ride.

Between this one and drukqs, this is one of my favorite albums. I can say that I like every song on this CD. Especially the last half.

If your new to aphex twin, this is an excellent starter album.

The other reviews say it all really - good, but not as esential as Selected Ambient Works (and not really in the same vein either). I just wanted to answer the reviewer's question about the gravestone: Richard D James's parents had a stillborn child some years before he was born, also called Richard, and the image is that of his brother's gravestone. (This also explains the significance of the middle 'D'.)

I LOVE THIS CD !!!! Such a GREAT addition to my collection, especially with such lack of this sound these days!
Unfortunately...I did not appreciate their music "back in the day."
I had many opportunites to see them,living in NYC in the late 70's - late 80's. Soooo glad they found these lost mixes! I repent!
A MUST OWN for anyone that appreciates raw, classic, gritty rock + roll.

L.A.M.F.--It's Not Enough!.......2007-03-01

Up from the red-leather remains of the New York Dolls rose the Heartbreakers, founded by ex-Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders (né Genzale) and handsome-devil drummer Jerry Nolan in 1975. Leaving their former band members in Florida with some guy named McLaren so they could score smack back in the Big Apple, Johnny and Jerry tapped proto-punk poster-boy Richard Hell for their new ensemble. CBGBs and Max's Kansas City were their battlefields and they were an integral part of this febrile, fertile spawning ground. You know the litany of names: the Ramones, Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, etc. etc. Though Hell froze up and departed, the Heartbreakers, eventually released only one album, the sonically-challenged "L.A.M.F." in 1977. This recent mix, from re-discovered tapes, sounds wonderful, less muddy, and all sleaze.

What makes the Heartbreakers great is simplicity. They reduced twenty years of rock and pop and rhythm and blues into 3 minute rave-ups that always leave the listener wanting more. Johnny's guitar-slinging rings true, always teetering on the edge of collapse: it's chaotic and exhilarating. Blistering leads, solos that sound like a strangling cat, chugging rhythms like the subway trains roaring beneath the city streets.

Songs like "Get Off the Phone," "Going Steady," "Baby Talk," and "Let Go" are trashy rock'n'roll rave-ups, with all the requisite elements: catchy choruses, sleazy good-time lyrics (the ones that make sense, anyway; Johnny weren't no English perfessor), driving drums, and immediate gratification. A song like "One Track Mind" is a beautiful thing, all irresistible chorus and air-guitar glory. "It's Not Enough": is a reflective ballad-sorta thing, with Johnny lamenting how "You can give me this/You can give me that" but it's not enough. Man it's good! "Pirate Love" exists only for the dual-guitar solo that rivals anything the Dolls ever laid down.

Then there are the classics, the signature tunes that no Johnny Thunders performance was complete without: "Born to Lose," (or, alternately "Born Too Loose") which opens the album: with some out-of-tune guitar whines, and the lyrics reveals again just what a poet of the streets Johnny was: "Nothin' to do/Oh nothin' to say/Only one thing that I want/It's the only way/I said hit it!/Baby I was born to lose."

"Chinese Rocks" is perhaps Thunders' most famous song even though it was written by fellow junkster Dee Dee Ramone. Anyone unsure as to what the song refers can be sure, it ain't nothing like Pop Rocks.

These songs depict the downside of downtown and how the jungle could eat you alive. Johnny's status as a stylish, decadent loser who strutted those mean streets is legendary. As Wayne Kramer (MC5) said of Johnny: "He could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory."

The Heartbreakers weren't really a punk band, even though they rounded out the legendary Anarchy tour of the UK in late '76 with a couple bands you mighta heard of, the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Rumor has it--actually, it's more than rumor, it's fact--that the Heartbreakers introduced heroin to the much younger and more naive UK punks, and Nancy Spungen went looking for Jerry Nolan and followed them there. You know what happened after that.

The band was never able to secure a record deal with an American label due to their, uh, extracurricular activities, so eventually they broke up. Johnny would put out a decidedly mixed solo album a year later ("So Alone") and continue to travel the world as a performer. Shows were plagued by his drug use, his attitude, his poor guitar-playing. I never got to see him perform, and odds are that if I had, I'd've seen a shambles of a set. Although a friend saw him in the mid-80s and remembers the acoustic set Johnny did as particularly entertaining. In April of 1991 Johnny Thunders was hauled out of a grimy New Orleans hotel, his lifeless body doubled over from the effects of countless drugs. It's not enough, is it, Johnny? No, I guess it never is.

Well, all that don't matter. What does matter is that if you care about real rock'n'roll you need this album. It rocks like nothing else I know, but fits kinda between the Stones and the Replacements (whose "Johnny's Gonna Die" is an ode to Thunders), G'n'R, Hanoi Rocks, very early Crue and other hard rock of the '80s. Practically every hard-rock/glam/metal guitarist that tosses a mane of out-of-control hair with a sneer and screech copped it from Johnny (who of course copped it from Keith Richards, let's be honest here). Johnny deserves to be remembered for his single-minded rock tunes, his dedication to the rock'n'roll lifestyle, and also for one of the coolest rock "nom de guerres" ever--I mean, "Johnny Thunders" how cool is that?! This album was the eye opener for me in '77. These guys rocked it, and lived it, like nobody else's business. Walter's guitar style complimented Johnny's like they were twin brothers. And, it's fun to figure out who played what on which track, although Johnny (the musical genius) is almost always evident. What the world really needs is more bass and drums like Jerry and Billy played it. Simple, powerful, succinct. I was lucky enough to see The Heartbreakers live. They changed my life for the better.

This is maybe the third Johnny Thunders CD I've ever heard.Certainly can see WHY there have been so numerous titles of his put out.The late New York Dolls guitarist can certainly give the fans what they want.Total of fourteen good old school All American tracks here to wet appetite with.Most impressive cuts are "Baby Talk","It's Not Enough",the very NY Dolls-ish "Pirate Love",the rocking "Let Go" and the Berry Gordy cover "Do You Love Me".Line-up:Johnny Thunders-guitar&vocals,Billy Rath-bass,Walter Lure-guitar&vocals and fellow Dolls alumni Jerry Nolan-drums.Do check it out.

After giving this album a second run, I change my opinion. This is a pretty good album, and the newer mix brings it all together. And while I still believe that "So Alone" and the Dolls first album are superior, I've come to appreciate this album on its own terms. Better than most other punk. High level of musicianship on Johnny's part (no pun intended.)

Ordinarily, I don't care much for vocal drum and bass or jungle, largely because I felt that many artists did not fit the vocals to the music well, but simply layered them on. Baxter is an excellent exception in that regard. The voice of Nina Ramsby blends wonderfully with the darkly energetic music.
Overall, I wanted to give this 4.5 stars. I reserve the perfect rating of 5 for an album that I will play all of the way through whenever I play it, whereas this has a couple of songs I didn't much care for and tend to skip. I definately recommend this album to anyone that likes vocal D&B, jungle, or darker trance(s).

I Like this CD a lot because it is unique. Interesting songs and interesting use of electronics. I like her voice a lot. I would consider this one of the more advanced albums in the Trip Hop genre. I listen to the album in its entirety, and can't say one song is better than an other. It's a rare occasion when I buy a Trip Hop disc and almost every song is purely great and beautiful. The smooth performance, delicate lyrics and simple melodies are backed up by a great beat and deep bass programming. I would like to get more by them.

A wonderful Punkabilly gem.......2007-06-20

The Cramps have always been a bit of an oddity to the uninitiated, it would seem. My mother used to hear me playing them on my stereo in high school, with no objection to their rockabilly roots, however she could never grasp why when the college station would show old video of their live shows, they were so over sexed and "out there."

There in lies, for me, the joy of the music on this album. while not particularly in your face sexually speaking, the undertones and inuendo seem to float in and out to the pulsating rock beats and the heavy reverb. Drawing heavily from surf rock of the 60's, there's a hauntingly soothing feel to many of the tracks on this combined reissue ("The Crusher" not being among such songs). A great soundtrack for a late night trip to the drive-in or downtown, assuming that's your thing. The only reason that i dont rate this album at 5 stars is that very few of the tracks have stood out over the course of three full listening session, GooGoo Muck and about three others. A good starting point for those looking for an introduction to the Cramps, but for that purpose i would more likely recommend Bad Music for Bad People, but it also stands as a solid release for those familiar with such music. A word of warning- While often pinned as "psychobilly" it should be noted that the cramps are not nearly as aggressive as most psychobilly bands tend to be

The grandparent of psychobily The Cramps have rereleased two of their biggest sellers on one cd. Psychedlic Jungle was one of the bands most popular albums of their career. Gravest Hits was what it sounds like the bands greatest hits but in true psychobily tradition they have to add the dark drama to the title. The bands greatest hits is good for someone who just wants to get to know The Cramps or for someone who is just getting into the band but it does not do the band justice as most of their best songs were not even released as singles so they couldnt have become hits. Psychedelic Jungle while it is a great album it could have been better, it is certainly no Bad Music For Bad People.

The Cramps are among a rare breed of bands that are so original and so authentic and good that it is hard not to like them.

Sepperatly the two albums are nothing way two special Psychedelic Jungle is three stars at the most and Gravest Hits is easily a four but placed together like this and they quickly become five stars. This is a collection of songs that would help to introduce any new fan of the genre or of the band.

PSYCHOSIS AT ITS BEST!.......2007-01-24

Alright, mein wunderkind, it's another 'should've been 10 stars' review.Robert Johnson met the devil at the crossroads; Lux and Ivy met him in a deep zombie and cannibal-infested jungle with visions of horror filling their already demented minds. Psychedelic Jungle remains one of the best albums to come from the early eighties, period.The covers sound like the Cramps wrote these themselves (and back in the day, when I first heard tracks off this album on the radio, I thought they did). Their version of The Crusher will have you heading for the next wrestling arena with the sole intent of getting in the ring and placing a well-placed smackdown on the WWE. Beautiful Gardens is garage rock from guaranteed hell. The Gravest Hits tracks are mostly covers, done in that insane style that we've come to expect from the Cramps (and also among their earliest material). Get this before the apocalypse takes place!

Some of the band's more recent fans may not realize that this is an actual 2-on-1 CD reissue,of their very first effort,the five track EP 'Gravest Hits'('79) with well done covers like Roy Orbison's "Domino",Trashmen's "Sufrin' Bird" and the Ricky Nelson hit "Lonesome Town".But first,you get the band's second full length lp,'Psychedelic Jungle'('81) with killer rockabilly pieces the Cramps themselves have totally mastered such as "Goo Goo Muck","Rockin' Bones","Caveman",the catchy "Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk" and "Green Door".An absolute must-have for any and all true Cramps fans.Get it!Look at that used price.A priceless work in music history,sort of.

I don't want to reveal how many years I've owned this CD or the LPs before it...too many moons have risen. The previous reviews covered everything I agree with, but I'd also like to add that though the music is slower, it gets you moving. You can't sit still! The grinding beat, sexual and stimulating, and the lyrics...well, you just have to decide that for yourself, are too cool!
"Goo Goo Muck" was my daughter's favorite song when she was 2-years-old, and she sang "Green Door" at a party when she was 4-years-old to an astonished, older crowd (It being an old song with questionable meaning). Even small children know "swell" music when they hear it. I weaned mine on the greats.
It seems most Cramps fans enjoy the same songs; likely due to superior-minded aficionados seeking musical perfection.
The Cramps' performances are something to be seen as well: bizarre, sexually-charged, hard to forget.
This CD is a great place to start. I have introduced many people to Cramps-style rock...invariably, they always get hooked (especially on Goo Goo Muck).
Don't forget the kiddies!
