Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
For a term as widespread and abused as "house music," there are countless definitions, sounds and scenes attached. From the bottom-heavy space disco perpetuated by the likes of Derrick Carter to the easy grooves personified by Miguel Migs, house is a panoramic sound that encompasses a wide variety of influences. In the case of New Jersey production outfit Blaze, their house music is a seriously spiritual thing, " the path that leads to God, " as they say on the lead track "Melodies of Love." Like contemporaries Roy Davis Jr. and Masters At Work, Blaze plumb house music's most soulful and uplifting roots, from Gamble and Huff and Earth, Wind & Fire to Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. Their ties to '70s soul are strong enough for them to persuade EWF vocalist Phillip Bailey to croon on the up-tempo and horn-saturated "Breathe," a track sure to have MAW (and their fans) weeping with joy.

The album's centerpiece is the spoken-word workout "Do You Remember House?," a DJ and dance-floor favorite that's been rocking parties (in its original as well as remixed form) for awhile now, thanks to Palmer Brown's poignant house-music memories. Dancers will also feel "Sweeter Than the Day Before," a rollicking romp into the heart of inspirational vocal house set to a driving backbeat. From the sensual downbeats of "I Think of You" to the Earth, Wind & Fire-invoking "One World" to the Stevie Wonder-styled "World Peace," Spiritually Speaking is an expansive experience of the most soulful kind.

While Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, the 1968 album that made Cash a household word, spent only two weeks at No. 1, this 1969 follow-up topped the charts for 20 weeks. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue," presented unbleeped for the first time. Equally impressive are the eight restored tracks and unexpurgated between-song patter. Cash's opening renditions of "Big River" and "I Still Miss Someone" are bracing. So are four closing songs teaming Cash with his complete performing troupe (the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers). Their gospel performances ("He Turned the Water into Wine," "The Old Account," and an early version of "Daddy Sang Bass") are electrifying, as is a concluding medley featuring everyone. Cash is presented here at his roaring, primal best. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars God's music uplifts the spirit.......2007-03-17

His special music uplifts the spirit - always and in all ways. This is a wonderful 2 disc set that surrounds us in a sacred atmosphere. Like a sprinkle of rain on a sunny day, the sampling of favorite hymns refreshes and enlivens the heart.

4 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-03-08

My mother attended a church her whole life where these hymns were sung and played repeatedly until the music became inextricable from her life. She enjoys this collection immensely; however, it has a few shortcomings. Occasionally some of the hymns are short enough to seem a demo rather than a full-fledged track on the CD. Other times, however, the melodies and harmonies--if simple--engage the listener in a pleasurable experience.

If these hymns are a positive memory for you, you will likely not be disappointed by the offering here for its expansiveness if nothing else. In sum, it is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The 50 Most Loved Hymns.......2007-01-12

They are the songs we grew up with and they just bring back such pleasure to your ears. Great sing along songs and worship and praise and its just wonderful music. All different artists and both albums are just nonstop and great music -- its definitely well worth it!!!

3 out of 5 stars nice music but not full-length.......2006-12-06

I was looking for a few good CDs of Christian hymns. This received strong reviews, so I bought it. The music is very good quality, not at all a class B production. The vocals are good, harmonious (though they can be a bit loud at a few parts) and the instruments sound great. However, one thing that no reviewer has mentioned is that the songs on these two CDs, all "50" of them, are not full-length. They only sing the first 1 or 2 verses to each song. Basically, they are 2 minute samples of the actual hymns, which is disappointing. I was hoping to learn the words to these songs and be able to sing them as I went about the day. I enjoy that the resources are available, but the case ought to explain these are not full hymns. If this does not bother you, then I would recommend these CDs for their quality. I hope this helps. God bless.

2 out of 5 stars Had Potential.......2006-11-10

The music on this CD sounds fantastic, but BE AWARE that they are only short segments of the hymns. For example, I specifically bought the CD for "Be Thou My Vision", which is actually only a short instrumental, and "Crown Him With Many Crowns", which only had one verse. Not good for a rousing sing-along while you do the dishes!

Amazon.com essential recording

If the bazillion packagings and repackagings of Mahalia Jackson's music confound you and you don't know where to start, this expertly compiled, carefully annotated double-disc box set is for you. Jackson wasn't just gospel music's first international superstar--she was among its earliest adherents and inventors. Working with the great composer and former blues singer Thomas A. Dorsey in the late 1930s, Jackson gave a distinctly blues-trained, jazzy sass and grace to Dorsey's material and the other hymns and spirituals she sang. More than any other performer, she helped to define gospel music itself as a transcendent, rootsy, melismatic, and heady spiritual sound. Culled from her sides for Columbia in the 1950s and 1960s, some of the arrangements in the set are not ideal and may sound quite a bit dated, but that voice shines and soars and dives straight to the center of your heart. Whether backed by a simple organ or piano or with full studio accompaniment, Jackson's booming, instantly recognizable contralto is indescribable, exciting, and forever a wonder to behold. And if you think that's an exaggeration, you don't own this record. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-15

The music is great and the singer is phenomenal. All in all a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the piano bass line!.......2006-01-19

Listen to the piano bass line in "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho." I can listen to that alone and rejoice! Then, there is Mahalia Jackson's voice, a little rougher than Ella Fitzgerald but there is a child-like joy as she sings these gospel songs. For this evidence, listen to, "If I Can Help Somebody." The recording is superb as if I were listening to the album on vinyl. Superb stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Would have loved to been in the audience..........2005-08-29

About a year ago, I was looking to expand my Gospel collection. I remembered hearing Ms. Jackson's version of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" when I was young -- and I remembered that I liked that song, liked it a LOT.
Thinking back to my younger days, I took a chance and invested in this CD, and Volume II, at the same time. WOW!! Suffice it to say that those two Mahalia CDs now receive more playing time than any of my other CDs.
One drawback; however, I learned not to play these on my stereo when it was time to go to sleep -- I just couldn't keep still -- my feet kept moving to the music -- the music is just too powerful, too stimulating -- had to limit it to daytime use only.
I would have loved to have been in the live audience to hear Ms. Jackson sing while she drew breath upon this earth.
Does it get any better than this ... I think NOT.
I hope I run into Mahalia and Elvis when I make it to heaven, and I hope that I get to hear them belt out those gospel tunes with their heavenly voices -- definitely something to look forward to! Wow, again!

4 out of 5 stars What's not to love about a Mahalia Jackson CD?.........2005-04-23

I bought this CD and Volume II back in 2002. My mother loved Mahalia Jackson, so I grew up listening to her in vinyl round the clock it seemed. I actually thought I couldn't stand to hear another Mahalia Jackson song as long as I lived. But as an adult, I found myself humming some of the songs my mother had played over and over, and one day I realized I missed Mahalia's voice. When I bought these collections of hers, I actually went searching specifically for Mahalia Jackson music. Imagine my mother's surprise when I told her I had Mahalia Jackson blasting in my house the way she'd done when I was growing up! :-) There are still more Mahalia Jackson songs that I'm looking for that, in all the songs on these collections, weren't included. That's my only disappointment with these. But the quality of the recordings -- classic Mahalia!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! After All These Years..........2004-01-19

...she is still considered the "Queen of Gospel". She has been dead for about 30 years and NO gospel artist can compare to her. Not even the late Rev. James Cleveland can get this much respect. When you hear Mahalia sing, it's like GOD singing. That's how powerful her voice was. Even when I have my doubts on life, I depend on Mahalia to pick me up (and she does). This collection is the best collection out there (IMO) on Ms. Jackson. I recommend this to all. I wished I was alive to have heard her sing live, but at least I have this collection.

4 out of 5 stars When Gospel Was Gospel.......2007-02-24

I was introduced to Robert Harris and The Soul Stirrers through this album, and followed up with the 2 CD set "He's My Rock", see my review. On this album of When Gospel Was Gospel, #5 is mislabeled, giving credit to "The Roberta Martin Singers, for the song "Yield Not To Temptation", which is definitely done by Robert Harris and The Soul Stirrers. I have played the first 6 songs of this album, over and over, for much comfort, as they are so beautiful. Also a close second are #8,9,13,14 and 15!
Sincerely,
Bob McKenney

5 out of 5 stars Best Black Gospel - 1947 - 1963.......2006-03-12

This is THE best rocking, shouting, one CD overview of Black Gospel from 1947 to 1963, produced by the man best qualified to do the job, historian and self-described gospel "monomaniac" Anthony Heilbut, who has devoted his life to the music. If you like the singing of Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Whitney Houston or Lou Rawls, or `60's soul from Motown or Stax-Volt - you'll love this CD. This is where it all came from. It's all here, the sweet falsetto crooners (R.H. Harris, Claude Jeter), the church wrecking baritone shouters (Silas Steele), the earthshaking basso profundo's (the classically trained J. Robert Bradley, equally at home in German lieder or Gospel shouting), the choirs (St. Paul's Baptist Church), the quartets (Dixie Hummingbirds, Soul Stirrers, Swan Silvertones), the women (Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, Delores Barret Campbell), the men (Brother Joe May, Professor Alex Bradford), and one caught in between (Wilmer "Little Ax" Broadnax, a woman who lived her life as a man in the macho world of male gospel quartet as the much admired tenor lead for the Spirit of Memphis Quartet).

There is not a weak number on this album, and most are gloriously good. There are half a dozen rare "in the spirit" "LIVE" recordings, including the rarely recorded legend Queen C. Anderson, and an absolutely scorching Swan Silvertones medley that segues from a searing Dewey Young baritone shout to a soaring Claude Jeter falsetto tour de force. I think it is the best thing ever captured by this much recorded group. The packaging and liner notes are impeccable, including an authoritative 20 page history of the music and performers.

This project was clearly conceived as an ideal follow up to the seminal 2 CD set "The Gospel Sound" produced on Columbia 30 odd years ago by Heilbut and the legendary John Hammond. There is NO overlap at all between the two collections - they focus primarily on different artists, and where the same artists appear (Mahalia Jackson, Dorothy Love Coates, Dixie Hummingbirds) different (and equally powerful) songs are used. You'll want the Columbia collection as well, since one CD covers the pre-1947 roots, including the unbelievable precision harmonies of the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers on 3 tracks, and the second CD rivals this for coverage of the period from WWII to the 1960's. After these 2 albums you might check out Heilbut's other Gospel collections on Shanachie, "The Gospel Women, Vol 1 and Vol 2", "Kings of the Gospel Highway", "The Great Men of Gospel, Vol 1" or the Dorn/Friedlander collection "Gospel Music" or "Jubilation, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2".

5 out of 5 stars When African-American Singing moved African-Americans.......2005-08-24

After sampling this new Shanachie product "When Gospel Was Gospel", I can testify that this is African-American singing to the "nth" power. This style of "full-throated" singing is seldom heard anymore because African-Americans either prospered after the Civil Rights movement or fell to the seductive power of "Hip Hop" genre that captured the heart, mind and spirit as Classical Gospel once did.

This music started in the 1930's when African-Americans were in their "Great Depression". And African-Americans have a Ph.d in suffering and hard times. This music is a testament to our ability to "ground" ourselves in a strange land of North America and plant our beliefs, hopes, and aspirations in a musical form.

I am always impressed with these singers who have went to Heaven. Each one has something to offer new generations of singers in tone, drama, and breadth of personality. I recommend this CD to those who are struggling to find meaning in their lives. Those who are looking for excitement and surprise.

African-Americans know about the negativities of life and we know how to create "Joy that comes to our mornings"

5 out of 5 stars Good God Almighty.......2005-07-19

This collection is beautiful. The Queen C. Anderson medley is AMAZING (wish we could have heard more from this great singer)!!! Dorothy Love Coates is perfect (as always) and Rosetta Tharpe is impeccable as ever. Love it!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Incandescent!.......2005-06-01

Anthony Heilbut has done it again! Prepare to be BLOWN AWAY. Put on your shouting shoes church folks! Listen in awe to J. Robert Bradley's resonant, dazzlingly melismatic "Amazing Grace" Clara Ward's incisive phrasing and pure, high alto on "Time is Winding Up", get your gospel blues on with Jacqui Verdell and Brother Joe May in "You're gonna Need Him", go back to the old sanctified church you grew up in with Rosetta's "Little Boy How Old are you?" and Marions "Traveling Shoes", shout like it's going out of style with Dewey Young roaring "I Thank you Lord" and be gently soothed back into consciousness with Claude Jeter's silvery "I have a friend", be both charmed and moved by Deloris Barrett's "Yield Not to Temptation" and listen to Ruth Davis give modern gospel singers a lesson in squalling in "Jesus steps right in" and "Too close to Heaven".....BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT. 5 out of 5 stars Absolutely enthralling collection of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's finest Decca recordings........2007-05-24

Over the past three decades I had come across her name on numerous occasions. Yes, I certainly had heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe but as far as I know I had never actually heard any of her recordings. My interest in hearing her work peaked recently after reading Gayle Ward's engaging biography of this remarkable lady entitled "Shout, Sister, Shout". After finishing the book I immediately ordered what appeared to me to be the best available collection of her music. In 2003, MCA/Decca released this marvelous single disc collection they call "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues". This disc made me a huge fan in very short order.
"Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues" features the cream of the crop of her most productive years at Decca between 1938 and 1947. While Rosetta always considered herself to be first and foremost a gospel singer she nonethless did not hesitate to venture into other genres when the opportunity arose. You can sample some of her earliest gospel offerings on this disc. Memorable songs like "Rock Me", "Sit Down" and her own composition "This Train" were big sellers in the late 1930's. Along about 1941 Rosetta received an offer she simply could not turn down. The popular Lucky Millinder big band offered her an opportunity to be a featured vocalist. Many of her ardent gospel devotees were extremely upset with Rosetta for singing secular music. However, the gig with Lucky Millinder would prove to be highly successful and result in several of her biggest hits. You may sample three of these tunes on this disc including the rollicking "Shout, Sister, Shout", "Trouble In Mind" and the blues classic "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa" from 1942. After a few successful years with the band Sister Rosetta Tharpe decided it was time to return to her roots once again. In the mid 1940's she produced some of her very finest work. Sample Sister's take on traditional tunes like "God Don't Like It", "Didn't It Rain" and "Strange Things Happening Everyday". And if that were not enough enjoy her inspiring duet with Marie Knight "Up Above My Head I Hear Music In The Air". Outstanding!
I cannot say enough about "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues". All I know is that I have become a fan for life. Pick this one up for yourself and you just might discover why a young Elvis Presley used to listen to her recordings all the time. "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues" comes complete with a very informative 16 page booklet. Very nicely done and very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Gospel Goldmine!.......2007-02-15

This is a prized collection of songs by the influential Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Elvis Presley's favorite gospel artist. She is raucous and wild, and her rock and roll sermons have a timeless authenticity that is sure to thrill fans of quality R&B, gospel and the blues. Hallelujah!

5 out of 5 stars The Genius Of Schizophrenia...Music For Saints & Sinners Indeed.......2006-06-13

Was she a Gospel singer or a precursor of Rock and Roll? The elements of blues and swing are all here as is straight ahead heartfelt soul..The exuberance of spirit radiates throughout.
The tension on display of being the daughter of a preacher with a lustful vibrato is truly a creative process on these recordings spanning 1938-1948..
Listening to this fine single disc compilation of her more famous sides is a treat..the sound was restored using the CEDAR process, informative booklet on her life within,as the music plays on one her the soul of it all on display and it is no wonder that the many styles she lived in her private life was expressed in her music as a balancing act that is truly human.

5 out of 5 stars A fine single disc samper of thsi faithful woman of God.......2004-12-03

Sister Rosetta Tharpe truly had a calling(a Gift) from God, and she submitted to it perfectly(Glory to God!). Tharpe sang the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but in a style where she blended marvelously Gospel music with jazz, swing, and blues. Tharpe touched many lives, including those of G.I.'s in the war, via radio broadcasts. Tharpe not only sang with passion and swing, and with a clear dicty voice, but with soul, and conviction! She also happens to be one of the greatest jazz guitar players of all time, always incorperating creative and swinging jazz guitar solos, into every piece she recorded. A great single disc cd that will proove that Tharpe was one of the finest jazz based gosel singers of all time, and certianly a jazz guitarist on the same level as Charlie Christianson.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent r&b music, with a Gospel aftertaste.......2004-04-16

Although on the cover of this cd, Sister Rosetta Tharpe looks pecularly like Alberta Hunter, but don't let that fool you. This cd is a great one, if you like early wailin' r&b, or swing tinged Gospel. I mean you can jitterbug or lindy hop to most of thsi stuff, and the rest is greta for listening. Christian music today is so commercial souning and pop sounding, back in the 40's, Tharpe made it swing, jump, stomp and wail, adding r&b, and her genious jazz guitar riffs, rock and roll like mad. Her voice is heavenly and if you like r&b divas liek Helen Humes, you'll love Sister Tharpe's unique and always jiving style.

If you thought you didn't liek Gospel music, try this, and it'll change your mind, for Tharpe added r&b(almost rock'n'roll at times), and swing, jazz, and jump blues to her approach. Sometimes singing pop songs, blues, and r&b filled gospel. A exellent cd tah tcover her 1930's to late 40's recordings.

Chanticleer's repertoire ranges through many centuries. On this recording, the group again proves its infinite versatility in a program of gospel music and spirituals. The singing is so authentic that one feels like a participant in a gospel meeting, swaying to the rhythm with the crowd. Contributing greatly to the impact is Chanticleer's guest, Yvette A. Funder. Possessor of a voice remarkable for its range, power, and flexibility, she brings to the music the empathy and authority of one born and raised in the tradition, whether leading call-and-response, engaging in improvisations that soar high above the chorus, crooning softly in meditation, or shouting in ecstasy. (She is also an active Bishop ministering to the poor and afflicted, and the founder of various social service agencies in California.) Several songs include soloists drawn from the chorus as well, most notably a tenor, a countertenor and a bass who provides a rhythmic ostinato. The program, designed for maximum variety of tempo, mood, character and texture, includes many favorite songs and spirituals, such as "Amazing Grace," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child." The arrangements by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's Music Director for 20 years, are admirably simple and very good; only a few are marred by awkward modulations or overly sophisticated, Hollywood-inspired effects. Most of them are for a cappella voices. Jennings also contributes a new original composition: "Be still and Know that I'm God." Repeating these words like an invocation, it builds a cumulative drama with increasingly wild, elaborate improvisations in call-and-response between soloist and chorus; supported by a prominent piano part that includes solos, chordal and running passages, it ends with a rousing climax. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Chanticleer, with Bp. Flunder: INDEED - How Very Sweet The Sound.......2006-02-10

On this standard red book 16-bit CD we are offered that rare and special invitation: Come now, pilgrim - take yet another good step forward in gospel praise or supplication. How can we progress in our individual and collective spiritual journeys towards whatever transcendent glories ground us, revive us, and lead us on despite life's challenges, unless we sing?. Are you having set backs? This CD is good medicine, and it is both a worthy addition to the gospel music shelf and perhaps just the sort of musical medicine that turns out to be good for you, on more than one level of body, mind, and soul. Not a bitter root aftertaste, nor a nagging fishy oil payback in any of this welcome elixir. I guess that is why we call it, Good News.

The arrangements of new and old gospel standards have been set by counter-tenor Joseph Jennings - a leading Chanticleer member of long standing - intently drawing upon both the florid improvisations of the soloists and gospel groups climbing ever so dazzlingly into the fiery chariots that sacred texts say carried off the prophet; and yes, rooted as well in the impeccably crafted close harmonies and inwardly solid strength of gospel quartets and ensembles like Fisk University's Jubilee Singers and many other exemplars.

So, when you listen to this one you will be immediately surrounded by that amazing and great, gathering could of witnesses. The messages are familiar: Keep your hands on the plow. Surely God is able. There is a balm in Gilead.

Like the famous vocal work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, his Serenade to Music as written for a star-crossed group of well-known British soloists of the era; so this gospel outing brings the small male ensemble Chanticleer to the fore - both as a vocal group and as a fabulous collection of solo voices who are prodigiously gifted vocal stars in their own rights. Capping off Chanticleer as an embarrassment of riches is a guest turn by San Francisco's own Bishop Yvette Flunder. She is the real deal, too, as both an ordained minister whose leadership in black churches has blazed fireworks in celebration of melding religion with social justice, and a Jen-U-Wine good news singer who can preach and pray and moan with the best of them.

Only the superhumanly perfected intonation of their cappella group singing, as well as the superb blend and polish of the Chanticleer dozen, will remind a listener than this group is as famous for its Flemish medieval polyphony or its unerring Purcellian clarity, as any other ensemble of twelve voices now appearing before us.

So, forget all the categories and musicology boxes which would seal off gospel music from pre-Bach cathedral masters of polyphony. With this CD we can just revel in the mysteries of good music, regardless. Yeah, Josquin, I'm talking bout you - Sit down servant, there's plenty good room.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Crystalline.......2005-04-08

I'm not a huge fan of gospel, because I find it to be led by emotion, and musically undisciplined. Rousing, yes - but a little goes a long, long way. I've also found most gospel recordings to be sonically challenged. Almost as if microphones were incapable of capturing the music with clarity. None of this holds true for "How Sweet the Sound." This is a beautifully recorded cd, and every tune is both musically precise, and emotionally resonant. It is, however, a little hard to listen to in one sitting because of the "sameness" of the arrangements. That's a small quibble - who says any cd has to be experienced all at once - and "There is a Balm in Gilead," alone is worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Best Chanticleer CD Yet.......2005-02-01

This is the Best Chanticleer CD yet. I have listened to it dozens of times. Money well spent. I have even given copies to several of my friends.

2 out of 5 stars How Angry the Sound?.......2005-01-02

My daughter gave me this CD, because, while I'm not religious, I'm a long time fan of gospel music. The first pass through the record, I found myself wandering off to other tasks. So, the second time I put it on the player I forced myself to sit completely through the record. I'm not familiar with Chanticleer, so I had no idea whey she thought I'd like it, but she's is right more often than not. This would be one of the "not" times.

I guess this as an attempt to make gospel music "hip." With songs like "Jesus Hits Like An Atomic Bomb" and "What You Gon' Do When the World's On Fire?" the lyrics are like walking a American urban street being threatened by strangers. Far from being uplifting, the songs are decidedly unfriendly. The feel of the music reminded more of the howling noises I suffered as a forced member of my parent's Kansas Methodist Church than the sweet, honest sounds of real gospel music. That intangible thing I get from listening to gospel music that is heartfelt and painfully honest, even if deluded, was nowhere to be heard in "How Sweet the Sound." Instead, the music is chant-like, monotonous, and cold.

I would not recommend this record to anyone outside of the Midwest. If you miss the sterile sounds of a Midwestern protestant church in full howl, this might be your cup of weak wine. If gospel music is what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is the bomb!.......2004-11-28

From "Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb" to "Amazing Grace", this CD is packed with glorius gospel spirituals and terrific talent. Highly recommend to music lovers of all faiths!

5 out of 5 stars everlasting.......2005-10-30

Though intended to be religious, Mahalia Jackson's singing has a far wider scope. Right up to the present day she still sounds great for everyone who cares to listen.

I think the extreme quality of her voice is very much enhanced by a consequent choice of repertoire. Always insisting on singing to the praise of God, Mahalia must have declined tremendous offers for switching to a more popular theme.

It's clear that Mahalia Jackson was guided by her religious devotion. She kept true to it all her life. The inspiration derived can be heard throughout her music -- adding the perfect touch to her everlasting songs.

5 out of 5 stars Love it........2005-10-02

I've always loved Mahalia Jackson, but this is the first CD I've ever purchased. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars My Goodness!!!.......2004-02-27

My Goodness this is quite a compelation!!! I thank my God for annointing this woman to sing like...like...like, well, I don't even know how to describel her. You can actualy feal what she sings. You can feal the sense of longing and expectation for rest and reward after a life filled with trial and tribulation. You can also feal the joy and serenity I'm sure she had due to the One she loved to sing about most: her life's Love, and mine: Jesus of Nazareth! This cd has wonderful sound quality and a lovely selection of some of her different modes-- from jubilee, to sorrow/longing, to almost classical-slash-jazzy! You won't be dissapointed! May she rest ever in God's peace.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Gospel Voice of the 20th Century.......2003-09-23

Born to a poor family in 1911 in New Orleans, Mahalia Jackson grew up singing in her father's church--and soaking up the blues and jazz for which that city is so famous in the process. By the late 1920s she was in Chicago, where (according to this CD's liner notes) her distinctly jazz and blues-inflected singing style nearly got her thrown out of the Greater Salem Baptist Church. But Mahalia persevered, and in the early 1950s a series of radio and television broadcasts launched her first to national and then international acclaim. Some thirty years after her death in 1972, she is still considered the single greatest gospel singer America has ever produced.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: nothing short of a remastered box set could possibly do justice to Mahalia Jackson. But if you can only own a single CD of her work, the inexpensive BEST OF MAHALIA JACKSON is probably your best choice, for it collects most of the songs for which she was most famous--and a number of less famous but no less beautiful and powerful selections as well.

As in the other Mahalia Jackson recordings it has been my pleasure to explore, the sound quality here is somewhat problematic. But nothing, absolutely nothing, can undermine Jackson's beautiful tone, amazing power, and incredible control. Whether it's her jump-for-joy rendition of such titles as "God Put A Rainbow In The Sky" or her emotionally draining medley of "Summertime" and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child," you feel Jackson all the way from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head. Her voice rings through you like a great bell, like the voice of the God she worships in every note of every song.

This is the second Mahalia Jackson CD I have reviewed, and I'm fast running out of superlatives. Truly, this is a voice that belongs alongside the great singers of the 20th Century, and I strongly recommend this CD and her work in general.

This collection beautifully and powerfully captures the experiential essence of the African American Spirituals. They are sung just as they were composed--with spontaneous power, group harmony, and personal authenticity.

Spirituals as presented in the concert tradition, such as were performed by the Jubilee Singers after the Civil War. As such, they are not intended to sound like "field recordings" (as one reviewer here had apparantly expected) but rather, polished concert performances. The documentation (liner notes, bibliography, etc) is outstanding...one could teach a workshop just using the CD and notes.

3 out of 5 stars Quality recording but not true to form........2000-12-28

This is a nice recording and it is well done. The quality of the music is very good but I was disappointed. All of the pieces are performed by choirs and as such are not true to the spiritual in its purest form. These are songs intended to be sung by people that are weary and heavy laden looking for rest. These are very personal songs which should be sung from the heart by a single voice. If not a single voice, a small group. If you are looking for spirituals sung by a large choir in a tightly controlled environment, this is for you. If you are looking for songs which are sung from the heart and soul, this is not it.

This reissue of 30 spirituals that were originally recorded between 1936 and 1952 presents the legendary Marian Anderson at her peak. Her unique vocal characteristics are everywhere in evidence: the incredible range, the ability to change color and inflection, sometimes creating the illusion of two different voices, and the organ-like resonance and enveloping warmth. There are also traces of Anderson's one weakness: a slightly tremulous vibrato. Her expressive response to this repertoire, always simple, direct, and deeply felt, came from the heart and spoke to the heart. The songs, mostly familiar favorites, are selected for maximum variety. Anderson brings out every nuance of their character and emotional range, from lamenting to swinging, jazzy, and triumphant. Franz Rupp, Andersons's long-time partner whom she credited with introducing her to German lieder, is equally at home in the many styles of these American songs. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, heartfelt singing!.......2004-04-04

What an amazing singer! I had only heard of Marian Anderson through reading books, and I happened to be thumbing through the cds in a cd-record exchange store when her name jumped out at me. I'm so very glad I shelled out my seven dollars! I'm not even really into spirituals, but something about the incredibly rich and impassioned quality of this legendary contralto's voice is completely irresistible. She connects so wonderfully with you when you're listening to it; you feel like she's singing to you, and you alone. Everything I've read on her remarks on her truly impressive range and vocal color, and it's all true. Her resonance can be a tiny bit unfocused...you can hear it in the vibrato sometimes...but this is an extreme rarity. There really is nothing to pick on about her voice-it just touches you in a deep way and won't let you go. These are historic recordings, and anyone, whether s/he likes African-American spirituals or not (and I admit I do now!) must add this CD to his/her collection. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-22

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.
