"... an ability to conjure autumnal chill... he's the ghost you love to hear."

Product Description
The Hungry Ghost's self-titled CD begins with "Haunted", a modern protest song with spooky synth interludes. It is narrated by a man who sounds slightly unhinged, whose belief system is being threatened by the "visions" and "voices" that disturb him.

"Heaven is a Dark Place" dreams of an exotic paradise where angels "love to dress in black" and night is perpetual. With its trip hop beats, bluesy guitar hook, and rolling bassline, this is a song that's, as one DJ put it, "hard to get out of your head".

Other highlights include "Evil Never Dies", a revenge fable with creepy dueling basslines. This track features a guest vocal by Detroit techno-goth artist The Impaler, who shows up to warn the listener, "luxury can be a vampire in disguise".

The Hungry Ghost

The Hungry Ghost,The Hungry Ghost,WHIMUSIC,The Hungry Ghost combines Dylanesque song poetry with the trippy cinema of Portishead and the twisted sensibility of a David Lynch movie. The Hungry Ghost has also been compared to Tricky, Massive Attack, Nick Cave, Bauhaus, Dead Can Dance.

5 out of 5 stars beware of hungry ghosts bearing gifts..........2005-10-28

I received this CD as a promo several years ago while employed at a record shop. One of many CDs I received in this manner, listened to a few times and passed on to friends...

...except this one I kept, and listened to again and again. Odd, considering I'm no electronica afficionado. This is definitely not your garden variety 4/4 beats. Compositions are short but superbly developed. The music has an organic feel, as of live instruments delicately cut-and-pasted and looped. The crackly turntablism and evocative violin crop up at just the right places. It has basslines Tortoise would be proud of. It made me go out and buy "Veiculo" and "Amateur View." All three albums are highly enjoyable and reward repeated listens. This is warm, inviting listening with lots of subtleties. I want their whole catalog!

3 out of 5 stars Music is more than just sound.......2001-07-13

If music's merits were measured in atmosphere and texture alone, then To Rococo Rot would be considered one of the most innovative bands on the planet. The four members achieve a wonderfully cohesive sound that explores the space/density dichotomy with effortless grace. Unfortunately, as far as thematic development and melodic and harmonic complexity are concerned, "Music Is A Hungry Ghost" is decidedly primitive. So in time the locked grooves that establish such delicate interplay end up feeling more like incarceration than liberation, and what could have been warm and inviting sonic exploration begins to sound cold and aloof. More complex, enticing and listenable material is produced by the bands with which To Rococo Rot shares members - Kreidler and Tarwater.

4 out of 5 stars MUSIC SPOKEN IN ITS OWN LANGUAGE.......2001-05-30

You will listen to this CD and not know what you've heard. You may listen again and have the same experience. You may ultimately decide the sounds To Rococo Rot have composed here mean nothing to you. They don't evoke one to dance. They are so momentary, there is no memory of them. In general, it sounds as if this is not something many out there are looking for. But, of course, that is the point to personal music. It speaks inwardly out from its creator with the artist so close to the material there is a danger we, the listener, may ultimately not be allowed in. And there is a certain distance between us and To Rococo Rot on "Music Is A Hungry Ghost" but in the ambient textures and the angled compositions, the corners are not too sharp and a real warmth emerges, capturing a sense of timelessness, of light, of darkness. There is the play of children in the sound, of depth of feeling next to the mechanical sputtering of machines. There are open horizons, wide open space, and the pulsing of a synthetic heart. I am not one to categorize. I try to take all music on its own terms and see as clearly as I can, the intent of the artist(s). This is indefinable stuff marbled throughout with brilliance and audacity never going over the top or where you want it to. It flexes an experimental muscle in its stubborness. Adventurous listening in many genres is gone these days. To Rococo Rot stays tried and true to the mystery. Long may they run.

    5 out of 5 stars mood music.......2000-07-04

hungry ghosts are an australian trio that plays instrumental music on a variety of instruments. they mine some of the same territory as their contrymen, the dirty three, although the hungry ghosts' approach is a little more varied. hungry ghosts are less cathartic than the dirty three, and more soporific, but in a good way. the music meanders and drifts pleasantly through soundscapes that make you glad to be at home on a rainy day. this music is ambient in the original brian eno sense of the word, it seemlessly sinks into the background, yet is at the same time utterly engaging; you can pay attention to it as easily and joyously as you can ignore it. definately recommended...

5 out of 5 stars Great mood music from The Ghost!.......2005-04-11

I found out about The Hungry Ghost when I was searching across Yahoo and was looking for a song to put in my first short film "ROOM X", and "Heaven Is A Dark Place" definitely fit the bill of exactly what I was looking for! After that I received the entire CD and realized that The Hungry Ghost is definitely not your typical "alternative music" selection, which is what makes it stand out amongst the crowd. Favorites include "Evil Never Dies" and "Scary Town".

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN BEFORE YOU LEAP!!!.......2005-04-03

Having grown up my entire life listening to music with little or no tv interference, I can say I truly understand the term "music appreciation". The first rule of which is to actually LISTEN to the music. Having been a long-time fan of The Ghost, I can only say that his latest creation is one of true artistic evolution. While maintaing his original sound, he has gone forward to further quench the thirst of fans of "Dark Trip-Hop" music. He has done so by adding deep, rich depth to his already natural story-telling ability by setting scenes for each song that pull the listener in to the Dark Reality of the world he has thus far created with his music and his on-line comic book, Cass Corridor. Which, by the way, also tie in interestingly to the new album. While his musical stylings may not be for the "Average Radio Listener", given a chance, any one of his songs is sure to strike a chord deep within everyone that brings to light some long-forgotten memory or dream, thereby serving its purpose. If this review has accomplished nothing else, I hope it at least serves as a reminder to others to back their opinions with educated fact.

1 out of 5 stars AAACK! the most contrived, silly crap.......2005-02-14

Being a music addict, I came across this CD, probably as a recommendation from some list someone has posted... BTW, IMHO, if like me you are always searching for new and unknown music to tickle your eardrums I highly recommend checking out the many lists that others have posted. I have found some of my most treasured music this way.

Apparently the reviews intrigued me and I put the cd in my wish list (another highly recommended tool for music mining). I was checking out my wish list, shopping for some ear candy and low and behold there was this CD and I gave it the crappy music screening...

Okay, just to be fair even if this recording is meant as tongue in cheek, it certainly is funny, but it still sux hard...

It is important that I do quantify my crticisms though. I only listened to the 2 free songs since there are no 30sec. samples of each song to determine if you even like the music or not. This day and age where it costs nearly 20 bucks for a damn CD I buy nothing that I cannot listen to at least a sample first. Being a music "crackhead" I have been burned alot buy paying good hard earned money for music I ended up hating and either giving away, selling for a pittance of what I paid, or just throwing away... Yeah, music that sucked so bad I couldn't even sell it to the local music store for pennies on the dollar. However, I digress...

From listening to the free downloads of "Haunted" and "Walk On Fire" I can see why they don't offer 30sec. samples of each track to determine if you like the music. I can also see that I do not want this CD and I will delet it from my wish list.

I do have to say this though, it isn't scary, or even "haunting", unless of course you are actually scared by the movie Abbot & Costello meet Dracula...

"The Hungry Ghost dot com; Enter the lair of the ghost" watermark on each of the free downloads is total comedy... I do recommend the two free downloads for a "hell" of a laugh.

If your ears are "Hungry" for great scary music... Rob Zombie's "Hell Billy Deluxe" or "House of a Thousand Corpses" is where you should be looking... Now THAT is scary, and ohh so goood...

5 out of 5 stars One Dark Chill Of Music.......2003-05-12

The hungry ghost is probably one of the best musicans there is. He wrote most of these songs and made them quite depressing, yet, delighful at the same time. He is very creative and his songs are more like stories with music. However, that is this CD's one flaw. The lyrics are good and so is the music, but they don't often flow to well together, when they do though... oh yeah. You can't label The Hungry Ghost as gothic or techno. He's defintely not rap either, and seeing as how it seems trip-hop can be anything, I'm not going to put him in that jumble of a genre. I will say he is just plain good with his sometimes sad, sometimes happy, and some times slightly oriental music.
I really do hope he achives mass-appeal even though he is kind of diffrent form most of the commerical junk pumped out lately.
Just buy the darn CD and enjoy it, I bet you will.
