When Robert Cray and the Fabulous Thunderbirds turned their similar combinations of Texas blues and Memphis soul into hit records in 1986, bar bands all across this land thought they had glimpsed the promised land of a long-awaited blues revival. There has been a flood of soul-blues releases since then, many of which have been respectable, even admirable, but they have lacked the two essential ingredients that gave the genre its artistic peak 30 years ago, as well as its brief resurgence 20 years later--terrific songs and outstanding singers. Delbert McClinton's One of the Fortunate Few has both those elements. The guest vocalists include Mavis Staples, Lyle Lovett, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, and Vince Gill, but it's McClinton's own coarse-grained Texas baritone--as supple as a snake and as definitive in its bite--that dominates the soundscape. And it's McClinton's co-producer and cowriter, Gary Nicholson, who makes the difference in the material. Nicholson, whose day job is writing mainstream-country hits, indulges his blues jones at night and has come up with rollicking uptempo numbers and gospel-drenched ballads.

Most importantly, Nicholson's lyrics contain both the irreverent wit that Cray lacks and the confessional angst lacking in the T-Birds. The humor crackles in McClinton's belt-it-out vocal on "Old Weakness (Coming on Strong)" and an aching need is felt in his restrained duet with Staples on "Somebody to Love You." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Delbert at his best!.......2007-03-25

This album rocks! There is only one cry in your beer song. The rest boogie.

1 out of 5 stars half-baked blues.......2007-01-15

where is the title tune? why is it missing from this CD?

poorly-written tunes. this whole thing comes across as bogus to me.

want the real blues? won't find it here.

The only reason I bought this CD is because I wanted to hear ONE OF THE FORTUNATE FEW--but guess what??? It isn't on this CD.

I want my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Except for the misleading title..........2007-01-04

This is an excellent Delbert CD; HOWEVER! If you're looking for his SONG "One Of The Fortunate Few", it's not on this album. THAT little ditty is on his album "Cost Of Living", which is worth its cost, just for that one track, although the rest of the CD is Delbert at his best!

5 out of 5 stars One of Delbert's Best Albums!.......2006-12-07

I bought this fifth album of Delbert McClinton's expecting to be entertained and wasn't disappointed. It has turned out to be one of my favorite collections, from the catchy tune "Too Much Stuff", to the more serious song, "You Were Never Mine".

Definitely a winner!

4 out of 5 stars Delbert always fun to listen to, here is no different.......2005-10-26

Delbert McClinton has one of those great bluesy voices that sounds so "regular" that you think you could do it, but in reality its got a depth and quality that is hard to match. On this album he really has some fun, and that howl is unmistakable. Sending Me Angels is a personal fave with him getting help from country greats Vince Gill on vocals and Lee Roy Parnell on slide guitar. Old Weakness calls to mind the fun lovin Stones classic honkytonk woman. and Leap of Faith cheesy as it might sound can perk up a dreary day with no problem.

5 out of 5 stars better than Rising Tide.......2007-02-04

I loved Rising Tide. but after playing it for a few days, I grew quite tired of it. and after listening to the Mixtape, I realized what I was missing. The Mixtape is absolutely worth listening, it is like no other remix out there. I mean, Jimi Hendrix remix? hell yes! My favorite is the Bloc Part ft. Apathy and Styles of Beyond. and including Lupe Fiasco just made this mixtape all the more enjoyable. GET THIS

Wow. Now let me repeat myself. Wow.
This is a Mixtape Masterpiece.
Now first off, I'd just like to point out that this Mixtape, is in fact legal.

So after you've purchased the Mixtape CD, feel free to make copies of it, and give it to friends, but please encourage them to also buy a copy, so as to support M. Shinoda (aka Fort Minor), along with getting a copy or two of "The Rising Tied".

And fourth, I'll give you the complete tracklisting.

5 out of 5 stars Dope.......2006-04-18

This is the best mixtape I've ever heard. I'm not really into the mixtape scene, primarily because most of them recycle the same beats too much for me, but this one is way different. Fort Minor got creative with this one.

The production on this mixtape is off the charts. It makes the cd. Shinoda kills this mixtape production wise, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers in the game. This cd contains some innovative sampling from bands you wouldn't expect to hear on a hip hop mixtape including: Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, and Bloc Party; and some of the beats on here will amaze you.

Shinoda is not the most gifted emcee, but he is capable of holding his own on the mic. Apathy and Lupe Fiasco spit some fire on this cd though. Styles of Beyond and Celph Titled have their moments on the mic as well. There is even surprise guest appearance by Juelez Santana on here, who spits a hot verse also.

The official cd Fort Minor put out-"The Rising Tied" used to get a lot of air time in my whip, but this mixtape has pretty much replaced it in my cd rotation. One of my boys told me "DUDE, You GOTTA burn this cd for me" after hearing three songs on it. Fort Minor: We Major is an underground gem.

Here is a quick summary of this review--You want to own this cd. The End.

When the defunct Sunny Day Real Estate regrouped for How It Feels to Be Something On in 1998, the band's fans were divided. Some saw it as a collection of frontman Jeremy Enigk's most potent songs, and others dismissed it because it didn't sound like the band's previous efforts. The Rising Tide will probably thin the herd even more, not because it's a bad album but because the band once again has gone traipsing through the fields to find a new pasture in which to graze. Tide engages their emo-antics with the kind of seven-cornered songs that made up Enigk's solo release, Return of the Frog Queen, but this time they're topped with a dose of progressive-rock overdrive. It sounds a bit hard to swallow, but producer Lou Giordano deserves a hand for making a shift of sound go down smooth. --Jason Josephes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-06-20

I'm new to this band and thrilled to have found them. Reminds me a little of Flaming Lips. Lovely harmonic progressions, singing, sounds, and lyrics. I will now proceed to purchase every other CD by this band.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Days, Indeed.......2007-01-31

I was absolutely obsessed with this CD when it came out back in 2000. This is one of those "artistic statement" albums that are difficult to pigeonhole into a category. Their music is so subversive and unusual while simultaneously being so melodic and familiar that you can almost imagine record company execs puzzling over it's marketability with furrowed brows.

Sunny Day Real Estate play a sort of post-modern alternative rock that is both original and intelligent, like an even more surreal and nihilistic Radiohead. Frontman Jeremy Enigck lays down very melodic but eerie-sounding reverb-drenched vocals over a layered, dissonant wall of distorted guitar textures, creating a very unique and dreamlike vibe. Combined with the surrealist poetic lyrics which somehow manage to be disturbing, hallucinogenic and existentialist yet hopeful at times, the overall feel of the album is very compelling and original. Bo one quite sounds like this band. The songwriting and musicianship are also top-notch, with enough hooks to get stuck in your head, but enough use of unusual chord voicings, time changes, and skillful manipulation of effects to be interesting to progressive music fans-something not often found in your standard alt-rock "emo" album. This album has the avant-garde vibe of Radiohead's "Kid A" with better songwriting, musicianship and lyrics and without the pretense. Very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-11-04

I actually discovered Sunny Day Real Estate thanks to their track on the Batman Forever soundtrack. But it is this album which made them one of my favorite bands. Killed by an Angel, One, Snibe are incredible songs that you will enjoy right away, but the rest of the album is just as good. Unfortunately I got into this band after they already split up so I never got to see them in concert. Classic.

4 out of 5 stars "Prog Emo" before the term existed.......2006-08-09

In hindsight, it seems impossible that the Sunny Day Real Estate whose post-hardcore early years inspired every horrible emo band on Earth could've been the same Sunny Day Real Estate that recorded "The Rising Tide." Sonically speaking, the group that made "The Rising Tide" -- here once more a trio, after being unable to find a permanent bassist -- is to emo as Rush is to the twee-pop. Indeed, Rush provides the ideal reference point for a review of SDRE's fourth album: Sounding higher-pitched and more British-affected than ever, bassist Jeremy Enigk's vocals hit Geddy Lee territory throughout "The Rising Tide." Guitarist Dan Hoerner's chord progressions eclipse Alex Lifeson's most visceral work in standout tracks such as "Killed by An Angel" and "One." Enigk's and Hoerner's lyrics -- earnestly decrying complacency, greed and other social ills -- at times sound ripped from Neil Peart's poetry diaries. And William Goldsmith's drumming, while not as rigidly asymmetric as that of Peart, puts complex grooves and accents in all the right places. It's as if SDRE were trying to make every album they thought Rush should've cut after "Moving Pictures" -- simultaneously dark, textural, riff-based and cliche-free, and yet filled with the sort of grand, sweeping gestures and lofty arrangements one usually finds in vintage prog.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, incredible, spiritual, engrossing, uplifting.......2006-01-16

i wouldn't believe a negative word you hear about this album. i'm a sdre fan and i enjoy their albums as well, but this is the first one i heard and it's captivated me from the first listens. i've listened to it a million times and it never fails to leave me uplifted - it's like a breath of fresh air.. but it rocks! the band is just really amazing here.. i would go so far as to say it's sdre at their VERY BEST. this is their PEAK. some people claim it's too prog-ish, and yes, it does bear a resemblance to rush due to the high vocals and prominent bass, but who cares? the songs are amazing. it's also interesting to see how their sound evolved through their different albums to end up here.

5 out of 5 stars No "Beat Up" Album Here.......2005-09-17

Jack Ingram may be the last true American songman. A Texas Country Legend, Jack is making noise across the nation now as h is popularity continues to grow. This was his first Big release album. With raw and edgy originals, Jack also does an excellen job on a cover song as well as a Duet with the great Jerry Jeff Walker. Jack is one of those artist whom I can listen to all of his material over and over again and never tire of it. Another tremendous effort by Jack.

5 out of 5 stars What country should sound like.......2004-04-22

I bought this cd at my 1st Jack Ingram concert at the Exit/In in
Nashville. Loved this cd from the 1st time I listened to it. All
of Jack's cd's are worth buying. This is my personal
favorite, with Hey You a close 2nd. I find myself never
skipping a track when listening to it, all tracks are great.
As good as the cds are, the live shows are even better.
Jack = Texas Country, Texas Country > CMT Country

5 out of 5 stars Damn Near A Classic.......2002-09-20

I had never heard of Jack Ingram until I saw the video for "That's Not Me" on CMT. Everyone I have played this CD for, country fan or not, really likes it. It is one of those rare CD's
in which almost every song is equally good. It is one of the very few CD's that would my music collection would always feel incomplete without(unlike his last two CD's 'Electric' and 'Hey You'). Listening to it always feels like running into an old friend.
Sad, happy, depressed, or drunk, this CD accomodates whatever mood I am in at the moment. Ingrams' lyrics are biting and poignant. The music is staight up honky tonk. The guitar playing and Jack's voice jump right off the disk. I think 'Airways Motel' is one of the best damn songs I every heard. The rest of the songs ain't too far behind. Easily my favorite single CD by any of the current Texas singer/songwriters. You better get it before it's ungettable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2002-02-09

this is a truly great album, much better than the fluff country stations play. if your looking for a cool country album, this is it. Dallas and Flutter are my personal favorite songs on here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant hard-edged Texas country.......2001-06-02

Following two independent releases, the smoking "Live at Adair's" showed off Ingram's rowdy live set, while hinting at the depth of his songwriting. This major-label debut, produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy, shows why Ingram is one of the hottest talents on Nashville's music row. But "Nashville" he's not. Ingram's Texas-styled honky-tonk has more in common with producer Earle and guest-vocalist Jerry Jeff Walker than with slickly produced top-40. From the opening lyric, "I'm a beat-up Ford, you're a Cadillac," Ingram stakes his claim: rough around the edges and a bit worn-out by the bumps in life's road. At 24, Ingram is an old soul. Strong emotions infuse each lyric, from the anti-love songs "I Can't Leave You" and "Imitation of Love" to the resigned adultery of "Airways Motel." In addition to Jerry Jeff Walker's duet, producer Earle kicks in for a cover of Jimmy Dale Gilmore's "Dallas," while Ingram finds fresh sounds in tunes from Guy Clark and Rose Lee and Joe Maphis.

Mostly recorded live-in-the-studio, the band is focussed and energized. As the previous live release showed, the band smokes on stage. Which is good, because on-stage is where you're most likely to hear them; commercial radio didn't even notice this album. Hopefully record buyers will know better.

With the demise of the Rising Tide label, this and "Live at Adair's" are sadly out-of-print. Well worth hunting down a used copy of each.

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Giants Stretch their Wings.......2005-05-09

Chesapeake began as a friendly little jam in the D.C. area during those dark months that stretch through the winter - when most Big-Time Bluegrass Bands are waiting for summer festival season to start back up.

Moondi Klein, T. Michael Coleman and Mike Auldridge were all members in good standing of one of the most famous of all Bluegrass Bands - the Seldom Scene. Jimmy Gaudreau was lending his fine mandolin work and angelic tenor harmony to Tony Rice at the end of Tony's ability to perform as a vocalist. (Vocal Chord maladies have since left Master Rice as guitarist, producer - basically everything but singer after inspiring a generation of bluegrass singers including Alison Krauss.)

Anyway - these gents had little to do after the touring festival season died down, and they all had more than a few ideas for original music. They would meet at each other's homes, bringing their axes and voices and over a few of these meetings magic began to emerge.

The immediately identifiable ring of the banjo and saw of the fiddle is nowhere to be found within their instrumentation of guitar, mandolin, bass and resonator guitar. Master Auldridge's long, bluesy dobro lines are alternated with Gaudreau's fluid and staccatto mandolin phrases. Moondi Klein's wonderful lead vocals are met on harmonies by Gaudreaus heavenly tenor and either Coleman or Auldridge's baritone.

The result was startlingly original in 1994, and other than Nickel Creek, no other band in the loosely-defined genre of Bluegrass has attempted anything nearly as original.

Wonderful uptempto tunes like "Always on a Mountain When I Fall" and "Blackjack Davey" are alternated with beautiful slow ballads like "Darcey Farrow" and "High Sierras". Van Morrison's "Moondance" gets a great workout by this group.

Sadly - they've all gone other directions, but they left two additional recordings: Pier Pressure and Full Sail. This first CD would be the ONE to start with - it's the first and their best.

5 out of 5 stars THE SONGS ARE THE SUPERSTAR.......2004-03-02

NOT ONLY DO I LOVE THE SMOOTH, SATISFYING MUSIC OF THIS BAND, BUT I JUST LOVE THEIR ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE INDIVIDUAL SONGS AND LIFE IN GENERAL. THEY SEEM TO SAY...IT IS A PRIVELAGE TO PERFORM THIS MATERIAL THAT THE SONGWRITING GREATS HAVE PERFORMED AND RECORDED, I HOPE THAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO THE TASK AND YOU WILL THINK SO, TOO.
IT'S A SHAME THIS BAND IS NO MORE. ARE THERE ANY DVD'S OR VHS LIVE RECORDINGS OF THIS GREAT BAND? SOME KIND SOUL PLEASE E-MAIL ME AND TELL ME IT IS SO!

5 out of 5 stars A truly great recording.......2003-03-11

I have over 700 CDs in my collection and this one is definitely in my top twenty. Great bluegrass sound with both fast and slow tempo songs. I never seem to get tired of these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Chesapeake is right up your river for Bluegrass Music.......1998-12-21

Giving Bluegrass a new feel, Chesapeake won't easily let you down. Every song on this album has incredible rythm and great lyrics; the combination of instruments is wonderful. I would strongly suggest you buy this album first - though none of them will disappoint!

A thumbnail description of Treasures makes it sound like a most unpromising comeback vehicle. It contains no compositions by Parton herself, one of the finest country songwriters of her generation. It does feature such gimmicky propositions as Parton singing Cat Stevens' anti-war anthem, "Peace Train," with a South African choral group, and Neil Young's science-fiction fantasy, "After the Goldrush," with Alison Krauss and Suzanne Cox of the Cox Family. When you actually listen, however, it turns out to be Parton's most consistent and most satisfying studio album since 1983's "Burlap & Satin" (her best overall album of the '80s and '90s is the 2 CD live set, Heartsongs). --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars A Look In The Treasure Chest........2007-04-20

This is truly a unique collection of cover songs from Dolly Parton. By the time it was released, radiostations weren't playing Dolly's music anymore, but none the less Dolly knew what she was doing. This is probarly her best cover album to date, it's full mostly country & rock songs made famously by other artists before like, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Cat Stevens and Mac Davis. The album received mixed reviews and reached #21 on the U.S. country album charts. "Treasures" featured a number of famous guest artists too, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, John Popper of Blues Traveler, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and Alison Krauss. The album released "Peace Train" and "Walking On Sunshine" as maxi-singles, which featured dance club music.

1. Peace Train - originally released from Cat Stevens, is a uplifting & powerful song & just like the song Dolly's vocals are so uplifting and powerful on here. also this song features a South Africa chorus group called "Ladysmith Black Mambazo".

2. Today I Started Loving You Again - is a song that probarly sparked the sound for most of the songs on "Hungry Again". It's a smooth song, but still up beat enough to dance with your love one.

3. Just When I Needed You Most - is a very sad & slow song, about needing someone who isn't there for you. Since the song is sad, Dolly seems sad on this song, but she does it in a beautiful way, (it's called acting). Also Alison Krauss is on this song as background vocals.

4. Something's Burning - is a excellent song, that starts off very low & calm then builds to a kickin' rock sound. This song is a mixture of country & rock music. Also it's another song that shows Dolly's vocals off very powerfully. Don't skip this one.

5. Before The Next Teardrop Falls - is a song that has Spanish (I guess) & country mixed together, it features Dolly's special singing guest David Hidalgo. The song is alot like "Today I Started Loving You Again" smooth, but still up beat enough to dance with your love one.

6. After the Gold Rush - originally appearing on "Trio 2" with Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt. Dolly re-recorded this song especially for this album. The song is more upbeat and a little faster then the original one, but all the same is a great song, full of moving music and lyrics. Alison Krauss makes another appearence on here as background vocals, but this time with Suzanne Cox and Viktor Krauss (who I guess is Alison's brother or husband?).

7. Walking On Sunshine - originally released from Katrina And The Waves' 1985 album and written by Kimberly Rew, "Walking On Sunshine" is a fun, playful & uplifting song, that will surely make you feel like your walking on sunshine.

8. Behind Closed Doors - has a great traditional country rhythm to it. The song reminds me of something that you might hear from Dolly's 1991 album "Eagle With She Flies". Pig Robbins also appears on this song playing the piano.

9. Don't Let Me Cross Over - is another traditional country song, that has a old feel to it. Raul Malo is on background vocals.

10. Satin Sheets - is a traditional country, that has a great old rhythm to it. For some the song will bring back memories of great old country music.

11. For The Good Times - originally written & performed by actor Kris Kristofferson, who also wrote the song "Me & Bobby McGee" which was made famously by Janis Joplin, is probarly the most boring out of all the songs on this album, however I will say that it is the perfect song to end this excellent album with and Dolly's voice is so calm and smooth on it too.

P.S. - Better late then never.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2005-10-10

I just stumbled across this album yesterday. I never knew that it existed, altho I had heard the remixes of "Peace Train" before. It is a fantastic album with some of Dolly's best vocal performances to date. I especially like her version of "Just When I Needed You Most", the original mix of "Peace Train", and the last song "For The Good Times" (which seems like the perfect song for a rainy, winter day). If you enjoy great music, don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked Gem.......2004-03-30

This 1996 release from Dolly is a unique collection of cover songs. At this time in her career, radio had cooled off with her music and was no longer supporting her. To me this was a sign of good things to come, as every album she released after this one was consistently good. She started releasing excellent albums through and through with each release, starting with this one.

The album opens with a cover of Cat Stevens "Peace Train". I like this version, but there are also some nice remixes of this song. Dolly makes it her own! My favorite though is her version of Randy Van Warmer's "Just When I Needed You The Most", which was also a single, and Alison Krauss joins her on this great song.

Another song that received remixes and club play was her cover of "Walking On Sunshine", which was originally done by Katrina and The Waves. She sings these songs convincingly and passionately, not ruining the originals.

She does a great version of Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again", Kenny Rogers' "Something's Burning", "For The Good Times" (Kris Kristofferson), "Satin Sheets" (Jeanne Pruitt), and many others.

Another favorite is her rendition of Neil Young's "After The Goldrush". I really love this song. She recorded it with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt in 1994 for the second trio album, which was not released later until early 1999. All versions are nice.

Overall, this is a nice collection of cover songs that Dolly does tastefully, and makes them into her own TREASURES.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-09-23

My favorite cd in the world and the best Dolly cd ever. If you just like good older music and don't like dolly buy this anyway she does the best covers I have ever heard! I love it and would recomend it to anyone! BUY IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem.......2003-03-27

By the time Dolly recorded this album, her new singles were no longer being played on radio, so she took the opportunity to record covers of some of her favorite songs. With a star-studded cast of guests, the results are impressive.

The album opens with Peace train (a Cat Stevens song), backed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Some of Dolly's fans may feel that the arrangement is a little over the top, but anybody who has listened to LBM's own music (as I have) will appreciate it.

After that, the rest of the album sounds more typical of Dolly's music, including excellent covers of Today I started loving you again (the often-covered Merle Haggard song that provided Sammi Smith with a top ten American country hit in the seventies), Something's burning (Kenny Rogers and the first edition), Before the next teardrop falls (Freddy Fender), Walking on sunshine (Katrina and the waves), Behind closed doors (Charlie Rich), Don't let me cross over (Carl and Pearl Butler), Satin sheets (Jeanne Pruett) and For the good times (Kris Kristofferson).

After the goldrush (a Neil Young song) was recorded by Dolly with Linda and Emmylou for their second Trio album, but after a decision was taken not to release it, Dolly recorded a solo version and included it on this album. The second Trio album was eventually released, several years after it was originally recorded, complete with the Trio version of After the goldrush.

All those songs are wonderful, but best of the lot is Just when I needed you most, a Randy Van Warmer hit from the seventies, which features Alison Krauss and John Sebastian. Dolly originally wanted this to be a Trio song, but it didn't work that way. However, it works superbly here.

This album was not commercially successful, but if there were any justice in this world, it would have been.

5 out of 5 stars Songwriter never made it as a singer.......2006-04-10

During the nineties, Matraca became one of the most successful songwriters in country music. This was one of her rare attempts to make it as a recording artist. Like her previous albums for RCA, this album is packed full of great song, superbly sung (at least to my ears) but American country radio stations weren't interested so, once again, Matraca failed to make that breakthrough.

So she remained a songwriter, writing plenty of songs for others to have hits with. On this album, Matraca wrote one song alone and co-wrote the others. From the late eighties onwards, many country singers (mainly the women) have recorded Matraca's songs including Tanya Tucker, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, Linda Ronstadt, Deana Carter, Trisha Yearwood, Highway 101 (in their original line-up), Pam Tillis and Suzy Bogguss. George Strait had a huge hit with Chill of an early fall, one of the most notable successes by a male singer with one of Matraca's songs.

Of the songs on this album, I know that Alecia Elliott recorded Some people fall some people fly and I expect that some of the others have also been covered by other singers. The songs here are a nice mix of different types of song - some are fun, some are serious, some are up-tempo, some are slow - but they are all wonderful. Perhaps the most touching song is Back when we were beautiful, in which an old widow discusses aging. The music is a nice blend of traditional and contemporary.

It remains a mystery to me that Matraca never made it as a singer, but this album is of a very high quality - a real treat for country music fans.

4 out of 5 stars The tides have risen.......2006-03-16

Neaera was formed by the guitarist of death/grind metal band Malzan in 2003, when Tobias Buck wanted to explore more melodic songwriting with polished production and The Black Dahlia Murder type of scream vocals. The Rising Tide of Oblivion is their debut album and it successfully realizes Buck's intentions.

The album is driven by the dual lead guitar works of Tobias Buck and Stefan Keller, who often harmonise with each other producing delicate textures with a lot of breakdowns. Far from the typical single-minded aggression of most metalcore bands, Neaera utilises both clean and scream vocals by Benny Hilleke who also does some serious deep growls. Starting with the highly melodic "The World Devourers", an energetic piece littered with fast drumming, the song highlights Hilleke's screechy vocals that then turn into smooth clean harmonies. The breakdown towards the end suggests Neaera is different from its contemporaries. They stand head and shoulders above in the crowd, as they know how to incorporate strong, hook-laden passages in their music, retaining their Swedish melodicism inherited by the likes of At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The big, epic opening of "Anthem of Despair" features low guttural vocals that belie the fact that it's the same guy doing those toxic screams on the more metalcore-infused "Walls Instead of Bridges". With "Where Submission Reigns", the band returns to its Dark Tranquillity style galloping riffs with searing vocals, much more similar to Carcass than the band's Swedish influences. After a brief acoustic instrumental with some cello and violin sounds, they start war on "...To Oblivion", perhaps their heaviest moment on the album, before calming things down with a beautifully composed melodic outro.

Claus Ulka from Misery Speaks guests on "Definition of Love", another stand-out track. The band's love for metalcore particularly shows in the second half, especially on tunes like "Hibernating Reason" and "No Coming Home", with perhaps a bit too excessive screaming. Thankfully, the latter also features a slow, ethereal twin guitar harmony at the end. The album concludes with another acoustic intro, much like the sixth track, except that the cello plays a more prominent role this time.

Though anyone who's into Swedish death metal and the more popular stuff of bands like The Black Dahlia Murder might think Neaera is cliché and obtuse, I beg to differ. It's the way they weave melodic songwriting with electrifying guitar work that gives them an extra edge, though repeat listens may be necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Neaera !.......2005-06-07

As I type this, I'm listening to Neaera's "Rising Tide of Oblivion." The musicianship is absolutely impeccable with Stephan Keller and Tobias Buck's razor-sharp guitar work, Benjamin Donath's deep, smoothly-executed bass lines, and the tight, flawlessly-brutal drumming of Sebastian Heldt. What impresses me the most is the sense of desperation and emotional delivery behind the unique metal voice of Benjamin Hilleke. This dynamic album is most impressive; specifically, the lyrics have an emotional and TRUTHFUL attachment to them which I personally love. Beautiful melodies mixed with metal-charged ferocity will keep all listening in awe, begging for more at the auditory assault unleashed by Neaera. There is not one track which doesn't annihilate the listener and sends shivers down one's spine. Standout tracks include: "Walls Instead of Bridges", "Hibernating Reason", and "The World Devourers." Andy Classen knew what he was doing when producing this masterpiece which is punchy, in-your-face, powerful, and simply, excellent. The metal world is rampant with varying styles and genres of intense, melodic, and dark music. Neaera has been unleashed and have proven with "Rising tide..." that they are fully capable of proudly performing alongside heavyweights such as Impious, Krisiun, Deicide, Heaven Shall Burn, among many more ultra-tight bands. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Neaera is a force that cannot be stopped.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but still generic metal core........2005-05-23

Too be honest, in my opinion, the whole metal core scene is getting extremely boring and cliche. Every band is sounding the same with their melodic Swedish metal riffs and breakdowns. This band however is at the top of this played out genre. If theres a perfect example of this genre at its best, this band is it. The vocals are one of the strong points on the album, which is kind of surprising for this genre. The singer has a nice scream and you can tell theres actually some emotion behind his lyrics, one thing a lot of acts today are lacking. He also has some good range as well (think Black Dahlia Murder style). The instruments are pretty good and you can tell the members are talented somewhat, but nothing really stands out compared to other artists, they're good and get the job done. They do have some creative breakdowns that sound similar to stuff Unearth put out. Other than those, expect fast razorsharp shredding and endless double bass. The production is also quite nice for this album and it sounds beautiful. So in the end, this album still got a faily decent rating from me. They are this genre at it's best. If you're a fan of bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, Dark Tranquillity, Arsis, or Unearth..then definately check them out!
