Songs that stand the test of time.......2007-03-17

The songs and delivery of them are still enjoyable. The CD stands up well and is fun to listen to.

Great collection focuses on late Sixties-Early Seventies.......2006-12-31

You never know what you're going to get with a Neil Diamond Hits collection. Some sample hits that span his entire career, but you don't get them all. Some focus on live renditions of the hits and you miss the studio versions. Some collections only feature material that Diamond recorded with a particular label. So it is no surprise that many fans who simply want the original studio recordings of the hits are frustrated.

I believe that this collection will satisfy the fans of the early, primal Diamond, the Neil Diamond that used to rock AM Radio. This has the original studio versions of many of the early hits: Crunchy Granola Suite, Solitary Man, Cracklin' Rosie, Sweet Caroline, Done Too Soon, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Holly Holy, and more.

This raises another issue with Diamond collections: Many times, he is much better live than he is in the studio! The studio versions of Crunchy Granola Suite and Brother Love just cannot compare with the ones on Hot August Night.

Thankfully, this cd has the awesome version of Cherry, Cherry from the aforementioned Hot August Night.

But for the most part, if you want the best from the studio, you have it right here. I love it. But on the whole, 9 times out of 10, I put on Hot August Night or Live in America.

A great CD full of classics.......2006-03-26

Some of my favorite songs were on the CD, but there were some that I didn't particularly like.

I liked most of the songs on this CD, though its missing Solitary Man and 1 or two others I would have liked to see. (Maybe they're outside the period the CD covers.) The nice surprise was the liner notes, which provided interesting history into his career and depth to the songs. Great collection.

What Happened?.......2006-01-11

Since Jennifer's music has been thoroughly reviewed for her albums I will take this time to ponder why there have been two greatest hits discs and a live album after only three albums. This would normally amount to meaningless gossip, but I think it may set a precendent for Christian public relations. Did Jennifer fall in love with a woman and bow out of the Christian music industry or did Jennifer fall in love with a woman and get "released" from her six record deal with Gotee Records through live albums and greatest hits? Nevermind the Bullocks, we loved what she has done and will miss her public presence immensely.

I have this problem of judging people by their genres before ever hearing their music. Because Jennifer Knapp is lumped in the genre of Christian, I almost overlooked her. I did the exact same thing with Plumb and it turns out they've become one of my favorite bands. So I decided to put my feelings on the back-burner and give The Collection a chance. While the lyrics are as outright religious as you can get, I don't mind. Jennifer has a powerful voice that could move even the most emotionally defunct person alive. I like the fact that she makes great usage of the acoustic guitar and even in some cases an orchestra. There's many influences quite apparant in her voice which any music buff can quickly point out, so it doesn't surprise me that she's so well liked.

A Little More shows a distinctive hint of Melissa Etheridge in not only Jennifer's voice but also that basic instrumentation. I like some of Etheridge's music, so I like this song. Undo Me, in all it's religious glory, is quite the catchy song. The music has so many different influences that it's sickening, it compliments the vocals nicely. Say Won't You Say has a very dreamy feel to it. Jennifer keeps her voice low-key and introspective which works beautifully. The Way I Am is in every way a classic. The lyrics are wonderful and Jennifer's voice is top notch. The chorus and bridge is where this song takes on epic proportions. It's been a while since I've heard strings used so expertly yet subtely and the full band feel is a nice touch. Whole Again is good yet shows weakness. The chorus feels like it's been done before, the only real redeeming quality to this song is the acoustics. Hold Me Now is the best ballad I've heard in months. The vulnerabilty is palpable and Jennifer's voice is on display like I've never heard it before. This song shows her range wonderfully and there's no doubt it'll touch a chord with you. Martyrs & Thieves, I've heard, is a fan favorite and I can understand why. Jennifer's voice is chillingly gorgeous and once again, there's great usage of strings and acoustics. When Nothing Satifies is a wonderful track that drips emotion. I like how it's very simple yet gets it's point across and once again, Jennifer's voice proves to be amazing.

My favorite songs on here are A Little More, The Way I Am, Hold Me Now, Martyrs & Thieves, and When Nothing Satifies. I wasn't lucky enough to find a copy of the limited edition version so I didn't get the second disc. But what I did get, I'm very impressed with. I'm glad I took a chance on this CD but if you're someone who just does not like hearing about God in your music, you better keep looking.

I love her. I have been a fan from the very beginning. All the songs on this cd are her very best. I think my favorite one is Hold me now. I have loved that from the very first time that I heard it. I think I loved it so much because some part of me relates to the women in the song. She is one of the very best Christian artists out there today. I can't wait for her next cd to come out.

This isn't really a review as such; I am new to Jennifer Knapp's music and maybe I'll be qualified to review after several more listens of this album of course ;) - translation: I like it, even the demos are fun to listen to, which is unusual for me, since I don't like demos. I remember reading something that said people used to gather around her even when all she had was a guitar - you can hear that coming through in these songs. Makes it feel like you're at a coffeehouse or an impromptu worship meeting listening to her sing. She was the artist whose music inspired Bethany Dillon to learn guitar, and now she is a musician as well [consider that a recommendation :)]

Rather, I wanted to respond to William Krischke's review. Jennifer Knapp has in fact quit the music business for the time being, and this was, as far as I know, her last album. She did not have much material for a new album, and she felt like if she continued it would have become about meeting expectations and the routine of releasing new albums every so often. She was not willing to keep on doing something if the Lord was not giving her inspiration anymore.

So please, do not be so harsh, and do not assume so much. Man looks at the outside, but God sees the heart - the same is true of me as well, I do not know where she is with the Lord and neither do you :)

Great Artist.......2005-05-13

I just recieved this cd and put it in my cd player, it's awesome!!! I have been looking for something that has a mellow worship sound without being to sleepy and this is definitely it. Up beat just enoough to keep it interesting while maintaining a spirit of worship and adoration of the father.

Neil Diamond's entry in MCA's multivolume 20th Century Masters points up the essential flaw of the whole series. While the title suggests a sort of time capsule--something truly representative of an artist's best work--that turns out to be true only to the extent that the label controls that material. Thanks to the budget-minded nature of the project, no attempts were made to include any of Diamond's great hits recorded for the Bang label, or the wildly successful adult-contemporary fare he did later for Columbia. True, there are some great hits here from the second phase of his career--"Sweet Caroline," "Holly Holy," "Song Sung Blue," and "I Am... I Said"--but the set ignores three Top 20 hits from this period, so it's less than definitive. Still, if you pair it with another greatest-hits package, Classics: The Early Years, you've got a pretty good collection of Diamond's best stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

One of 3 CDs to Get If You Want Good Diamond compilation.......2002-03-20

The songs are excellent (hence the four stars), worthy examples of Brill Building tunefulness married to lyrical phrases influenced by Dylanesque dissociation. That Diamond, like Elton John's Bernie Taupin, can render said dissociation prosaic and sometimes absurd (remember the "not even a chair" line?)only makes him slightly more gauche than Billy Joel, Paul McCartney or Michael Jackson at their least inspired. But like them he has an undeniable gift, and in my opinion he's written more good songs than James Taylor, Don McClean or at least Joe Walsh. Not all of them, unfortunately are on this disc, which thus fails to deliver on its title's promise (hence the aforementioned four stars) of including the best of the featured artist. For that you also need two other releases that bookend this one: "Classics The Early Years" for additional key tracks from his 60's pop-rock period and "12 Greatest Hits Vol. 2" for highlights from his more recent adult-contemporary material. Sure there are still songs that will be missed by some, but if you have at least two of these three collections (which may depend on your budget and what phase of Diamond's musical career you favor) you are bound to have most of his more memorable and popular compositions. This album,like the two others I've mentioned, offers the original recordings of the hits, an advantage over more exhaustive, multiple-CD anthologies marred by live performances which, while quite enjoyable on their own terms, leave many listeners longing for the studio versions of songs they cherish. Even if you decide to purchase only this album you will have made an excellent addition to your music library. But if, as I suspect, it leaves you wanting more, seek out the others I've recommended at your leisure and you will get much more of a very good thing.

one-third of a satisfactory Diamond collection.......2002-03-18

A thoroughly enjoyable sampler of Neil Diamond's memorable pop-rock hits which preserved and updated the virtues of Brill Building songwriting, namely, an instant accessability and enthusiasm married to certain degree of emotional resonance and sophistication - an artful balance that faltered when the times unfurtunately demanded or creative inspiration dictated that Diamond sacrifice the former in favor of the latter. Yet while it includes "Sweet Caroline" and "Cracklin' Rosie" (hence the four stars), it does leave out several songs that most people who enjoy Diamond's music will probably want to hear(ditto). To those who wish to have several more his finest songs from the early years I humbly recommend that they seek out "Classics: The Early Years." For the best known of his more recent and still tuneful adult-contemporary material I advise them to look up Columbia's "12 Greatest Hits Vol. 2." To the best of my knowledge, none of the selections on these compilations overlap, and this due to reasons of music label ownership. Anyway, last I checked the two other hits collections I've named were also available. Together they provide a very good (though, of course, by no means definitive) overview of Diamond's work and, in terms of cost and content compared to multiple-CD sets, it may be the way to go for more casual listeners.

A good mix of Neil Diamond's early hits.......2001-07-29

This is a good mix of Neil Diamond's early hits. From "Sweet Caroline" "I am I Said", "Play Me", "Holly Holy", "to "Cracklin Rose" each song was a hit that was played on the radio in the 1960's through today. While not a complete CD of Neil's greatest hits, (that would be at least 3 CD's), this is a good variety of the songs that made him famous.

Neil Diamond songs are timeless. He is one of the few artists that I can listen to going down the road and know the words to each and every song and enjoy singing them out loud (of course by myself). His CD's are the type that I could listen to again later in the day after playing them earlier in the day. His unique voice, sense of passion in his lyrics, and his story telling when he sings is unique and very well received. I look forward to hearing his songs on the radio, listening to his songs in my collection, and purchasing his new works when they are released.

Overall, this is a great CD to have, is it a complete version of his greatest hits? NO. Is it one to enjoy over again? Absolutely YES!! Highly recommended!

Too much duplication.......2001-03-05

Great songs as only Neil can do them, but my beef, as has been stated by other reviewers, is the selection. What we have here is just a duplication of his "12 Greatest Hits" collection with the exception of "Shilo" and "Done too soon", and the addition here of "Crunchy Granola Suite". So, anyone who has his Greatest Hits collection already, really doesn't need this. But for anyone else, I suppose it's a good collection. Booklet includes a 2 page essay and a photo of Neil. No lyrics though.

As I heard "She Wore Diamonds" and "Malibu Wave", I bought this album. All the songs of this album are just beautiful. They're relaxing and with a touch of acoustic hawaian rithms from Daniel Ho. This album must not be missing in the collection of all jazz lovers.

I just bought this, after hearing one or two songs by Kilauea on the radio. This is a great collection, especially if you want to unwind and relax at the end of the day, or just play it in your car for a smooth ride! There are some songs that sound rather similar, but if you aren't planning to analyze everything in the music, it works fine!

Eversince I bought the CD, I never get tired of listening to it. There one of the more underrated smooth jazz band around. Try picking this CD....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!

Album Description

This recording features the premiere recordings of works by the late Lou Harrison and the legendary Harry Partch. John Schneider, guitarist and Los Angeles radio personality performs on a wide variety of guitars using such instruments as Partch's microtonal Adapated Guitars, Martin, Gibson and Fender guitars, a National Resophonic Guitar, and other instruments that feature tuneable fretboards for various types of Just Intonation. Lou Harrison (1917-2003) wrote his last guitar piece for National Steel guitar, custom fretted in Just Intonation. The Scenes from Nek Chand uses a six-note mode and is based on the sculpure and architecture of Nek Chand in northern India. Harry Partch worked on the adapatation of guitars in the 1930s, using one for his Barstow: 8 Hitchhikers' Inscriptions (1941) (available on BRIDGE 9041). The opening of Partch's long lost song cycle, December 1942, begins with a setting of the jester's song "Come Away Death" from Shakespearre's Twelfth Night. Three Intrusions (1949) are the first compositions to use Partch's newly invented Diamond Marimba and the Adapted Guitar 2. Both of these works feature Schneider singing and intoning the vocal parts, as well as performing on copies of Partch's Adapted Guitars.

The only record of its kind, and well-done.......2006-01-10

While I too have some criticisms, I can't imagine anyone having the time to do all the unique things that had to be done to realize this album and still have time to get every little thing perfect. This stands beyond many albums in terms of performance and artistry. It is unique and varied. It is definitely a bit jolting in terms of consistency, from the electric-sounding track 1, to the Partch, whereas the rest is more normal guitar playing. But it is all worthwhile. Schneider's singing may not sound like Partch, but his inflection and interpretation are suberb in terms of following the composer's intent. His playing is technically brilliant. It is not fair but to view this as an early recording in a basically yet-to-be-explored field. I hope this album inspires many to build on the ground that Schneider and a few others are working to lay down.

inconsistent, directionless, some great material.......2005-10-15

The reason this recording is important is because it has several important pieces which are on record for the first time, a few by Lou Harrison, a few by Harry Partch. The performances are technically excellent but some truly lack soul. The album is for the most part consistent until we reach the Harry Partch material which seems out of place (this is when it takes a turn and makes the listener cringe), John Schneider sings on the Harry Partch tracks, the singing is very sub-par. He sings about being a hobo and riding a train but the voice sounds far too crisp and clean. But it's hard to complain because these are their first time on record and our only way to hear them. You need to close your eyes and Imagine a gruff, hairy, hobo singing them. Also, the piece written by John Scheider feels a little too melodic and peaceful for this record. This disk has some great material on it, but purchase with an informed mind.

Marilyn Monroe long ago passed into an impossibly tangled netherworld of fame, history, and myth, one that all the digital preservation in the world can never really unravel. While Monroe's films and tragic conflict of image and personality have been endlessly explored, her generally underrated talents as chanteuse often get short shrift. This wonderfully restored 20-track anthology (the musical companion piece to Fox's five-film Diamond Collection video boxed set) goes a long way toward addressing that shortcoming. Crucially, it pays equal tribute to the behind-the-scenes talents that midwifed Monroe through her iconic performances in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and There's No Business Like Show Business (films that account for the Monroe performances here): Fox musical directors Alfred and Lionel Newman. Alfred's scoring and conducting skills are also showcased on the grand, Gershwinesque "Street Scene" prologue to "How to Marry a Millionaire." Indeed, the Newmans are the firm bond that holds together this sometimes dizzying collection of performances by Monroe, Jane Russell, Fred Astaire (a sprightly "Something's Got to Give" from Daddy Long Legs), and Ethel Merman (her signature showstopper, "There's No Business Like Show Business"). But if the sign of a great singer is the ability to "sell" a song, Monroe is the equal of her stellar cohorts on sultry performances of "When Love Goes Wrong" and "After You Get What You Want, You Don't Want It," let alone the legendary "Heat Wave" and "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" (even if we learn that Lionel Newman presaged contemporary recording technique by piecing Monroe's performances together in the studio). There is minor sonic residue of the films' antiquated recording technology, but producer Nick Redman overcomes it with treats like an a cappella rendition of the Monroe-Russell duet "Two Little Girls from Little Rock" from Blondes, with the singers' voices separated left and right in the speakers. If you loved Moulin Rouge, here's a healthy dose of its spectacular inspirations. --Jerry McCulley

This CD is interesting because it has songs by Marilyn Monroe or
associated with her films. The most fascinating film of the Diamond Collection is called THE FINAL DAYS and includes a
reconstruction of 40 minutes of Marilyn's final uncompleted film
SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE. The Theme song in the movie is superbly
sung by Frank Sinatra. To my great disappointment, the version
included in the CD is sung by FRED ASTAIRE, which is good but not
as great as the Frank Sinatra version.

Roughly half of the CD are either instrumental tracks or sung by someone else. I doubt most people realize this before they buy.

I found this CD stunning and a joy to listen to from beginning to end.
First of all, the remastering of the sound is incredible ( MGM take note of your disasterous "Some Like It Hot" soundtrack release on CD ), the vocals are upfront and clearly audible, with the backup orchestra and chorus so clear that you can pick out individual instruments with unbelievable clarity giving the familiar songs a "newness" to it.
The "incidental" music, hidden for years in the vaults, are a fantastic surprise - from the jazzy Gershwin-like sound of "Streetscene" to the seductivly beautiful "A Dream" and "The Girl Upstairs".
Many of the vocal songs are extended and complete with Marilyn's solo on "Bye Bye Baby" sung acappella with the backup orchestra leaking through her headphones giving it a very eerie quality. The vocals are so clear that it sounds like she is in the same room singing to the sounds of a radio being heard from an apartment next door. The first time I heard this it gave me a chill.
The vocals from the other performers ( Jane Russell, Ethel Merman, Fred Astaire ) seem to fit into the theme of the CD very well, and when Fred Astaire sings his beautiful rendition of "Somethigs Got TO Give", you get the feeling he is singing about and to Marilyn herself.
The CD end with Marilyn and Jane Russell singing "Two Girls From Little Rock", again acappella. It works, with each vocalist singing separatly from each speaker - no frills, no orchesra, no chorus, just the two voices harmonizing perfectly - a hauntingly beautiful end to a beautiful CD.
This is a great CD and a must for every Marilyn fan or anyone who in interested in the sounds of the musical comedies of the fifties.
I can hardly wait for "The Diamond Collection II" to see what other "gems" they will find in the vaults.
