Brushing off criticisms that his albums all sound the same as casually as he peels off Chuck Berry licks from his trusty Gibson, George Thorogood keeps the faith on The Hard Stuff. Coproducer Jim Gaines (Jimmy Thackery, Santana, Luther Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan), who knows his way around a bluesy riff, returns to add his touch. The combination of rugged production with a relatively varied set makes this a keeper in the bulging Thorogood catalog. The guitarist and his band churn through a rollicking set with as much enthusiasm and fire as someone with half his 56 years. The Stonesy attack of "Rock Party" is mixed with high-voltage shuffles ("Takin' Care of Business" [not the BTO tune]), swinging, upbeat instrumentals ("Cool It!"), and the usual assortment of unexpected covers from the likes of Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, and Fats Domino. Thorogood maintains a refreshing sense of self-deprecation on the boogielicious "I Didn't Know," where he repeats variations on the title with a wink and a smile. A surprisingly subtle acoustic cover of Bob Dylan's "Drifter's Escape" proves he isn't afraid to take it down a notch, and a sizzling, rootsy take on Johnny Shines's "Dynaflow Blues" shows his proficiency on National Steel slide guitar.

At almost an hour, the album is on the long side, but the playing is consistently inspired and Thorogood never sounds like he's going through the motions--no small feat at this stage of his thirty-plus-year career. With enough diversity to keep it interesting, The Hard Stuff proves the typically dependable Thorogood still has plenty of gas left in the tank to keep his cylinders firing. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

George Thorogood is the quintessential American blues-rock guitarist. In a career that spans more than three decades, he has led his band The Destroyers to the very pinnacle of the blues pyramid spawning such classic tracks as "Bad To The Bone", "I Drink Alone", "Get A Haircut" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" among others. This new album sees him honing his talent even further on new self-penned tracks such as "The Hard Stuff" and "Any Town USA", and a selection of classic covers such as John Lee Hooker's "Huckle Up Baby" and Fats Domino's "Hello Josephine", all given the unmistakeable Thorogood treatment.

Classic Thorogood. A few repeats but plenty of new material and riff's to justify adding this disc to your library. Keep on rockin, George.

This talented man has gone
beyond the blues tradition!
He has infused

to create yet another
outstanding sound track!

2 out of 5 stars Slow.......2006-11-05

I like the old George Thorogood. Although this is not bad, it's not great. Love Doctor is my favorite song on the CD. It has the pazzaz of the George Thorogood of yesteryear.

5 out of 5 stars Harley Davidson Road Songs.......2006-10-25

This is an excellent collection of classic rock songs associated with the open road and a free spirit, just like Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

3 out of 5 stars Some hits and misses.......2005-09-20

As a long time motorcyclist, I was hoping this would be a collection of the greatest riding songs ever. It's not. Bob Segar's ROLL ME AWAY and Bon Jovi's DEAD OR ALIVE are not here. It blows my mind that none of the Harley CDs have ROLL ME AWAY but do have Segar's AGAINST THE WIND, which has nothing to do with riding motorcycles. I might of missed the point, but if it's a Harley CD I'm expecting more songs that are about riding or refer to motorcycles in the song.

4 out of 5 stars Great Party Music.......2005-08-15

This is great music to listen to while you sit around and party with your friends. For me it brings back memories of younger days. We do own a Harley, but to enjoy these tunes, it's not necessary. It's also good listening for just hanging out with the one you love.

4 out of 5 stars This Rocks!.......2003-07-30

This is a great CD! My only complaints are "Sacred Ground," which doesn't rock, and "Ridin' the Storm Out," which would be ok if it was the live version. But it's not. Other than that, it's the perfect CD for a road trip.

5 out of 5 stars Wrecking Opinions.......2002-11-08

Awesome CD! That outta the way, this CD is the best compilation of songs I've seen in thirteen and a half years. There's nothing quite as good as listening to Radar Love, I Can't Drive 55, and On The Road Again all on the same disc set! And the songs on this album, even the mistitled Devil Went Down To Georgia (As I remember it it's called Deuling Fiddles), every single one of them, beats anything you could hear on "Today's Hit Music Station". Now, this is my personal opinion, and actually has to deal with a post on the reviews, but Mean Streak needs a life and a few spelling lessons. Sounds to me like Mean Streak is a disgruntled rice-burner boozer with a taste for music about as deep and broad as my pinkie toe. Just my opinion. Oh, and this album is a must-buy.

When Live debuted in the mainstream in 1991, the band's earnest alt-rock effort Mental Jewelry balanced high-strung emotions with aggressive guitar work. On the band's fifth album, V, the earnestness has completely disappeared. Everything about this record feels forced and overproduced. Electronic beeps and loops swirl through songs like a U2 record gone bad. Guitar solos squeal in overarching metal-band style, and front man Ed Kowalczyk's vocals are so overdramatically pained, you can almost feel the veins popping off his neck for the most mundane subject matter. Even the band's use of Eastern influences feels slapped on, as in the intro to the nu-metal disaster "Like a Soldier." The guest appearance by Tricky--a partnership that only Kowalczyk's appearance on the last Tricky album can match in oddity--feels like nothing but a gimmick. What started out as a college rock act has sadly become just another attempt at grandiose sound with invisible substance. --Jennifer Maerz

1 out of 5 stars Another one to throw in the trash.......2006-09-09

These guys are the biggest joke in rock music. All of these 5 star reviews are an even bigger joke. Ed Kowizsychik(SP) or however you want to spell it sounds as pathetic as he looks. This is garbage, plain & simple. Im glad radio is no longer saturated with their music. 20 years from now, no one will remember this group.

1 out of 5 stars Horrific, terrible, a complete disappointment... what happened to a once great band?.......2006-05-20

Normally, I do not see the point of writing negative reviews. Check out my profile, I've very rarely written a negative review. "V" by Live deserves a negative review. This CD is horrific, terrible, and a complete and utter disappointment.

I consider myself one of the earliest fans of Live. I remember hearing "Mental Jewelry" back in early 1992 during my senior year of high school. "Mental Jewelry" is, in my opinion, as significant as Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Pearl Jam's "Ten". I believe it helped define that early-to-mid `90s grunge/alternative sound. It deserves five stars, easily. Too bad Live has slipped with every subsequent release. "Throwing Copper" was a terrific sophomore follow-up. However, I wouldn't give it five stars, maybe 4 or 4.5. "Secret Samadhi" and "The Distance to Here", Live's third and forth releases, were mediocre. There are some terrific songs, but some disappointing ones as well on each of these CDs. Each deserves three stars. Spot the trend?

Live hit the bottom with this one. In all honestly, I don't think there is a redeemable song on this entire CD. If I wanted to hear bad white-rap, I'd pick up a Vanilla Ice CD. Sure, "Overcome" seemed poignant right after September 11, but a few years later, even that song seems a bit contrived.

I can confidently say this will be the last Live CD that I will purchase. If you are new to Live, pick up their first release here on Amazon, "Mental Jewelry".

5 out of 5 stars Underated Gem.......2006-05-01

I know this isn't a favourite among Live fans but it's my pick for their best.
I went through the whole Pre-Ordering thing when I heard about this ones release. Was very excited about it.

Bad points first:
At first listen there isn't much that stands out. I find with all their albums (Songs From Black Mountain most of all) that it takes several listens for the melodies to sink in. That said though, if you know how to take it, you'll give it time. Once you do, you'll be thankful.
I would also recommend ignoring the tracks OK? and People Like You which are two of the worst songs they've recorded. The rest though, is amazing.
1. The Intro is Ok if you let it be what is is - an intro. Perhaps not needed but they were trying something different.
2. Simple Creed is the lead off track and like all of their later albums, also the first single. Perhaps not a great choice as the single as it didn't perform that well and didn't give the album the needed airplay. Perhaps they were trying for something rocky knowing the two best radio songs (and actually the next two singles) on the album were ballards.
3. Deep Enough rocks nicely and like alot of the album has a different feel about it.
4. Like A Soldier is a favourite of mine. It was a single in Australia.
5. People Like You is terrible. Saved only by the fact they mention Queen.
6. Transmit You Love is a good ballard though perhaps filler material.
7. Forever May Not Be Long Enough is a great song. Lots of changes throughout and perhaps the catchiest song on first listen.
8. Call Me A Fool is beautiful.
9. Flow is a favourite. Simple really and rocks hard and is similar to their Throwing Copper style of repeating the same verse over and over.
10. The Ride is a lesser track and has them back to the Verse/Chorus Verse/Chorus stlye of Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi. Feels like it been done before. Still good though...
11. Nobody Knows is the best track from the album. I wanted it as my Wedding Waltz song but my wife didn't like the 'kiss my brains' line. I guess that kind of stands out a bit. Bit Wierd but I'm sure Ed knows what he's on about.
12. OK? is terrible. Should be a B side track, not amongst this greatness.
13. Overcome is wonderful. Perhaps hangs around too long at the end but is perhaps their best ballard after Nobody Knows and Turn My Head.
14. Hero Of Love wasn't a favourite to start with. I din't like how the chorus came in too heavy. Now though, it's one of my favourites. I love it and fell bad for thinking bad thoughts about it early on.

All in all this has a bit of everything. Though Throwing Copper has all the big singles and the hype, this album has the quality and variety the TC lacked.

5 out of 5 stars LIVE; art and spirit uncompromising and hopeful!.......2006-04-12

'V', at first entitled 'Ecstatic Fanatic', is a departure for LIVE on the scale if, not the nature, of 'Secret Samadhi's melodic weirdness, though on the complete other end of the sonic spectrum. What ties them together is the ballsiness of such a change of pace, and the wonderfully experimental feel of both; a refusal to bow to the status quo and expectations of the business. Things like a duet with Tricky, an attempt to rap about spiritual love, and wonderful timing a la 'Throwing Copper' (with regard to 'Overcome', anyway) combine to make this an album that at first throws all expectations, and then without warning, begins to grow on you at an exponential rate. If you give it the second and third chance it deserves rather than tossing it aside after the first listen tells you this is FAR different from other LIVE offerings, this could become one of your favourite LIVE albums. Or at least it did for me; I listen to it when I want LIVE--high energy! LOL.

A lot of people (read: critics) slam the band for,(A) having an 'inconsistent recording history', or (B) being from the grunge era.

My rebuttal to (A) is: Too many folk in the music business can't seem to get past the biggest selling album disease; they compare all later efforts to the one that broke the charts. I personally wouldn't have remained a LIVE fan of this degree throughout the years if all they had done was release a 'Throwing Copper' clone every couple of years. I happen to LIKE the fact that LIVE gives the money-driven industry the finger and goes on growing and evolving--and letting their music evolve WITH their lives and ideas--without regard to trying to duplicate the public success of their best known effort. This rather punk ethos (for a solid rock band anyway) is called 'not pandering to the moneymen' and 'artistic integrity over public consumption'. The subsequent albums have sold well, though they haven't had the lucky timing that 'Throwing Copper' had to fit so well into what was happening in popular music at the time. Only jaded critics who care only about numbers would call these modest successes 'failures' only because they weren't 'Throwing Copper's with different covers. Far too many bands and artists have been murdered by their labels forcing or pressuring them to recycle, rerecord, and play the same stuff that won them accolades in their breakthrough efforts, regardless of whether they had since grown or changed; in the process losing that edge of anger or wonder or whatever it was that first captured the public imagination. LIVE has chosen to be comfortable with the fans that 'get' them rather than allowing someone to force them into an artistically stultifying mould for the sake of sales alone; this is called 'not selling out', and for that I applaud them.

As for (B): Though they happened to have emerged into the public eye in the same era as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, et al, LIVE never really fit the grunge model with anything but a tendency to ignore the interview and paparazzi angle of business (ie they refused to [...]themselves out to the media, instead preferring to concentrate on the MUSIC, shocking though that may be!), and a wonderful sort of ambivalent anger at the socio-religious status quo. This anger was the reason many folk loved 'Throwing Copper', and dislike later albums, in which the anger has faded to a message of Hope and Unconditonal Love. If consistent anger without growth is what these folk are looking for, then obviously a band that grows and changes is not for them. And for those who call lead singer Ed Kowalczyk a Kurt Cobain wannabe; they have obviously never listened for a moment to the lyrics and melodic spirit of his songs anyway.

Which brings me to another main criticism of LIVE. Some folk are turned off by the overt spirituality of Ed's lyrics, calling it 'preachy'. Critics also slam LIVE for their lyrics, saying "if we wanted preaching, we'd go to church". But EddieK is not preaching; he neverdoes. What he is doing is sharing the most intimate moments of his life: the moments when the Spirit touched him and made him whole; and in knowing how that feels, how uplifting it is in a moment of confusion, I find these lyrics inspiring.

As a long-term Live fan, I find them life-altering; and in fact, this fourth album, 'Distance to Here', quite literally saved my life. Many I've spoken to feel the same way; for though Live as a band name is hard to 'google', the FriendsofLive are out there and being uplifted daily by the work the band, and EddieK with his lyrics in particular, do. They make the world better just by being in it...and by being willing to SHARE! If communication and understanding can save the world, then Live are right on the avant guarde, with U2, the Indigo Girls, and a few others.

So all I can say for those critical minds who find Live's lyrics 'pretentious and sentimental' and 'drippy softcore preachery'... for them I can feel only pity, for as far as I am concerned, the message of Love is one for everyone, if we can but let it in. If the lyrics don't speak to these people, fine; but they do speak to some of us; so deeply that they bring tears to our eyes. So the fact that these critics are arrogant enough tell everyone they meet not to bother listening long enough to make their own decision/connection (or not) with the music, to me, is a sin. Just because they got nothing out of it, doesn't mean we are all alike...thank God! Yes, we are all different...but Love is Love.
Thank you EddieK and Live, for lifting me up.

5 out of 5 stars Critically Panned...........2006-03-26

This album was almost universally panned by the critics. This just goes a long way toward showing how much critics know. This happens to any band that gets a little bored with the cookie cutter mold they have created for themselves and try to do something different from what the bourgeois establishment that the music business has become. This album is nothing less than pure brilliance. It does of course have its slightly cheesey moments, but when you do a 180º about-face from what you have been doing for a decade somethings are just not going to work as well as others. The only real failing of this album is in some of the lyrical content. Songs like "Transmit Your Love" and "Deep Enough" do not quite pack the intellectual punch that we true Live fans have come to expect from Eddy, but they are still fun and good to listen too. The best thing really is that Live, in doing something so different, did not lose that certian something that makes a Live song a Live song. In the end you yourself need to decide if this album is good or not. I give this album a full 5 stars.

Released on the Enja label this shows Barbara at her most creative, along with sidemen Andy Sheppard on saxes and Mitch Watkins on guitar. The music is often blue or funky and the quality of soloing is superb. Barbara's footpedal bass work is worth the price of the CD alone! Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars nearly lost Classic.......2007-06-24

Here we have a true slab of proto-metal goodness. You'll notice I say "proto",as this doesnt quite reach Metal in my opinion though having said that, few bands of this era rocked as HARD! For point of reference, think a more raw,little-less-bluesy Led Zep minus Plants vocal wailings. This is great, catchy hard rock "from the day" played with spirit & grit.Dont hesitate if you can find it!!

    5 out of 5 stars Hard Stuff.......2007-05-21

I was in a heavy metal band "CIrith Ungol" for 22 years and these guys were one of my favorite bands and influences. I would highly reccommend this for any fan of heavy metal or hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Long Lost Heavy Rock Classic.......2005-07-05

John Cann, the guitarist for Hard Stuff, came hot off the heels of Atomic Rooster, a hard driving prog rock group led by keyboardist mastermind, Vincent Crane. Hard Stuff's Bulletproof, which was released under Deep Purple's Purple Label in 1972, was considerably heavier with thick mounds of aggressive guitar chords and lightning fast leads. The music itself is very rooted in the 70s and doesn't age as well as say, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. But that's really if your ear is untrained to true 70s hard rock authenticity. Hard Stuff is to Blairwitch Project as Led Zeppelin is to Nightmare on Elm Street, with the latter being more raw, gritty, and not filtered through big production values and commercialism. Songs on the album like the hard hitting blues fest 'Sinister Minister' or the heavy metal self-document 'Time Gambler', convey a sense of soul, strength, and edginess which seem to be missing in most of today's contemporary hard rock music. To sum up, if you want to experience the vintage sounds of of an obscure long-haired, 70's metal group, then this is it.

Graybeard aggro is the outlook that permeates this selection of roadworthy numbers for the chopper set. Mixing '70s classic rock with its '80s offspring, blues-rock with its proto-metal kin, Legendary Harley-Davidson Road Songs hugs the corners with the likes of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town," and Heart's "Crazy on You." And though most of the selections aren't explicitly asphalt anthems (BTO's "Roll on Down the Highway" and Poison's "Ride the Wind" are a couple of exceptions), nothing here will prompt you to either slip into the slow lane or stop in your tracks. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Perfect songs for the perfect motorcycle.......2003-01-15

This is a wonderful collection of songs to get the motor humming and the blood pumpin'. "Fire Lake" and "Ride the Wind" are sublime; the others are great, too. We play this CD over and over and....all hail to Harley Davidson on their 100th Anniversary! We ride our Electra Glide with Pride.

    5 out of 5 stars And I don't even like Harleys........2002-03-14

This CD is an excellent compilation. And I ride a Honda Nighthawk. Seriously, though, this has great "true" rock songs that are easy to listen to, but pump you up. I took a 1000 mile road trip listening to mainly this CD and I never got tired of it. It especially helped at night when my eyes were getting heavy. I just rocked all the way through the night. There's a mixture of hard rock tunes (such as Black Sabbath's "Neon Knights"), some '80s...rock (Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" - arguably the best '80s rock anthem), and good old fashioned easy rock (like Bob Seger's "Fire Lake"). The mixture of hardcore, bluesy, and even upbeat rock really gets you into the music. Lots of guitar and better lyrics than any rock you'll find nowadays. And Billy Idol's cover of "LA Woman" isn't that bad. This CD is great for road trips or just listening to any ol' day. Well worth the money. There isn't a song I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Hittin' the Highway.......2000-12-23

Being the owner of both Harley-Davison Roadsongs compilations, I was ecstatic to learn of this new collection of road-worthy tunes. Filled with 17 classic rock songs, this cd kept me rockin' and singing along until the very end. I've been a fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles for many years, and this disc represents the freedom and excitement evoked by riding on the back of a hog. With such 70's classics as Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" and Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" to The Dead's "Touch of Grey" and the Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" of the 80's, the artists compiled in this album still manage to put most of today's artists to shame. If you like classic, good old fashioned rock and roll, or you're just tired of listening to Limp Bizkit and Korn (not that there's anything wrong with them!)...this album is a must have!

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Time Machine Back To The Awesome 80s.......2007-04-13

In the mid 80s if you had a pulse you were quite familiar with the monster hit 'Turn Up The Radio' this song defined all that was great about a decade (along with Loverboy and Poison but that's another story)
the entire debut Autograph album was perfection from start to finish...so how do you follow up perfection without it seeming like a let down, well,it's really hard but they tried
this release 'That's The Stuff' is not nearly as bad as most people will lead you to believe, sure it's not as good as 'Sign In Please' but compared to other bands from this time, this CD rocks!
the title cut is filled with the same happy smiling in your face rock and roll as the debut album
and take no prisoners has the echo kind of backing vocals that made Dokken and Ratt famous...Blonde's In Black Cars was the hit off this one,it's actually quite good, sure it didn't go as far as 'Turn Up The Radio' but that kind of song is really once in a lifetime, let's not be too hard on these guys...'You'll Get Over It' is a beautiful love song (mid tempo, not really a ballad) Crazy World is fun,Night Ranger kind of fun...We're An American Band...this sounds almost exactly like the Poison version done over a decade later,I like it but I know I'm in the minority...I think the stand out track on this album is 'Changing Hands' a beautiful ballad that should have been released as a single, sounds very much like Def Leppard from the Hysteria period...Hammerhead shows that the guitar player can really rock (it's instrumental), Built For Speed and Paint This Town are the only ones that aren't quite up to the rest....they aren't bad they just aren't quite as good...think filler from Night Ranger

this band was sadly underrated and this album is actually very good if you give it a chance....if you like Def Lepppard,Van Halen,Night Ranger or any other band that sounds happy while still rocking, then check 'em out

the upside - changing hands, that's the stuff, blondes in black cars, you'll get over it

the downside - the ending 2 songs kind of lose steam, and hey, where is the song 'Six String Fever' from the original release,no mention as to why that's left out? Come on guys, you could have included one more song on a CD (I have the cassette version too and I'm glad, the song is quite good)

the bottom line - definitely worth having at a reasonable price...I wouldn't pay more then 20 buck for it...but it's a piece of 80s music that will live forever...donutman says so!!!

    1 out of 5 stars A career-killing album from a once-great band!!!.......2005-04-18

Ohmigod! This is the worst letdown album I've ever heard. I REALLY REALLY liked their first album ("Sign In Please" - see my review) which was a classic album with big big hits for me on it! So I thought I'd give this one a listen.
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!! I hated it from the first song to the last! I guess, like a previous reviewer has pointed out, this was a rushed album, and Boy Howdy, it sure sounds like it! The title track is lame-o pseudo-rock, and I despise their remake of "We're An American Band" (it was a bad song choice for GFR, and is much worse here). I got really sick of Steve Plunkett's voice because he never changed tone or pitch. Kudos though to guitarist Steve Lynch. He tried hard to be fresh, but he fought a losing battle with this one.
I tried really hard to find a good song on this album, because I hoped something - anything would redeem it for me. But NOTHING clicked. All fans of 80's heavy rock should avoid this album and just buy their first album.

5 out of 5 stars That's The Stuff Is The Stuff!!!.......2005-02-17

I have known about Autograph since they first started playing the clubs and the first recordings. They are what 80's music was all about, and still are what music should be. It's fun, energetic, and gets you going. There's not a single tune from these guys I don't like and recommend any CD they have, turn it on and turn it up!!

2 out of 5 stars Plunkett is right.......2004-07-18

Plunkett is indeed right. The album was rushed and it sounds like it. The first track has no hook to it, just him repeating the title over and over. Hammerhead is good, but it's no Eruption at all. Get over it is good, but Steve is right, it could've used some polish. Blondes In Black Cars just simply was not what I was expecting when the new Autograph came out. I saw the video and decided NOT to buy it, I think your first single should entice you to buy. I didn't purchase it until it came out on re-issue. It is a good listen, will bring you back to the 80's no doubt. Add this to your metal cheese collection, just don't pay alot for
