There's an intuitive branch of chamber jazz that began with Lennie Tristano and continued through to Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, and the Swedish trio E.S.T. Israeli-born pianist Anat Fort is the latest iteration of an approach that's based in intuitive interplay and an austere, Bauhaus sense of dynamics. Echoes of Keith Jarrett circa the mid 1970s and his band with Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, and Paul Motian reverberate throughout her ECM debut. The comparison is perhaps more facilely drawn because Motian is her drummer on this session. (He also happened to play with Tristano.) He's joined in his colorfully shaded and fluid rhythms by bassist Ed Schuller, who has a Mississippi-deep sound, anchoring even the freest improvisations on the disc. Most of the tracks consist of this trio, but they're joined by clarinetist Perry Robinson on a few songs like "Chapter Two," and those head for the hinterlands of avant-garde playfulness. Songs like "Just Now, Var. I" have that mix of stateliness and gospel chords that Jarrett employed at the time. On the other hand, "Just Now, Var. II," rendered solo, could have dripped from the pen of Annette Peacock, the early muse and composer for pianist Paul Bley, with whom Fort studied. Fort is a pianist of melodic gifts who can also play the angles of abstract expression as she does on the solo piece, "Chapter One," but she shares Keith Jarrett's gift for deeply integrated ensemble play, which shines on tracks like the freely played "As Two/Something 'bout Camels" and the cloudy moods of "Not the Perfect Storm." This is Anat Fort's second album, and she's quietly establishing herself as a composer of graceful beauty and an improvisor of daring exploration. --John Diliberto
Album Description
A Long Story is Anat Fort's debut release on ECM, and is comprised entirely of her original compositions, with one joint effort between Fort and Perry Robinson. From the very first track, the standard-in-the-making "Just Now Var. I," Fort's attractively melodic and Eastern-flavored jazz writing is apparent and ECM's storied history of piano-led groups (think Keith Jarrett, Bobo Stenson, and Tord Gustavsen) continues with the addition of this fine quartet. The "sidemen" on A Long Story are three well-known jazz veterans, led by the great Paul Motian on drums. Perry Robinson makes his ECM debut here and Ed Schuller rounds out the group on double-bass.
Customer Reviews:
Already one of the years' best!.......2007-04-27
"A Long Story" marks the ECM debut of the Israeli-born New York-educated
pianist Anat Fort. And what a great debut it is. Although it is only April it seems destined to be one of the year's 10 best jazz albums.
Fort's compositions run the gamut from wistful to whimsical. She can be introspective and contemplative without becoming dreary or cumbersome. The cohesiveness of this project is further enhanced by the rhythm section that not only provides the essential foundation but also the framework for many of the compositions. But what else would you expect from living legend Paul Motian?
While this album was not recorded at the ECM studios, it nonetheless has that characteristic ECM sound. Open. Spacious. Subdued. The only question is why this took 3 years to be released since it was recorded in early 2003. But, in the end, who cares? A great album all the way around. One can only hope that Fort's future efforts will build upon this impressive beginning.
Almost too subtle for me to catch the vibe . . ........2007-03-18
. . . but I finally did. This disc demands close listening. Its nuanced pleasures, from Fort's gently slurred piano notes and brilliant pedal deployment, to Ed Schuller's deep, woody bass played with precisely bent notes and sly overtones, to Paul Motian's magical, dancing cymbals and sprung time, reveal themselves only to those who pay attention. Casual listening makes it almost sound--heaven forbid--mundane.
Only after easing into its subtle sensibilities do the furtive melodies began to reveal their hidden beauty and rigor. And just when one gets used to the finely tuned piano-trio concept, enter Perry Robinson, who has a unique approach and beguiling tone on clarinet, to lift the session to new heights. What seemed an entirely lovely outing suddenly turns mysterious, and sometimes even scary, starting with the very Charlie Haden-ish "Lullaby," continuing with the spooky "Chapter Two," a Fort/Robinson duet, and resurfacing whenever Robinson joins the proceedings ("Not a Dream?" with its magical-realist soundscape, "As Two/Something 'Bout Camels," certainly the most ambitious number on the disc, drenched in longing until, about midway through, a huge angst surfaces with Robinson's skittish clarinet and Schuller's brave bass solo, soon resolving into a more familiar-yet-still-alien territory, Robinson playing obsessive ocarina over delicate piano chords, and, finally, "Just Now, Var. III," with such palpable Sehnsuct that the listener almost keels over from longing).
Two solo piano numbers underscore Fort's understated genius, "Just Now, Var. II," with its delicate wistfulness, and "Chapter One," a study in quiet virtuosity, full of spiky melodies and faux-Romantic yearnings, all dolled up in gloriously ruminative wrappings.
As I say, you might be fooled by the apparent ease of execution that permeates this remarkable disc. But take the time to listen closely, and I think you'll agree that only a musician of the highest accomplishment could conceive and imbue such seeming ordinary music with such magic.
Highest recommendation.

Best Album of 2007 (so far).......2007-05-23
The most exciting indie release I've heard all year, and if you can believe it, they are even better live! For fans of Spoon, Walkmen (although these are a stretch as WR have originality up the wahzoo, just points of reference really). Lots of great drums (two drummers!), enticing guitars and pounding keys. In all the wonderful noise the amazing thing is that the lyrics all stand out and the melodies are cathy as hell. You'll be bouncing along from start to finish. Take a chance on this, I promise you won't be let down. High points are "Kid On My Shoulders","The Plot","While We Go Dancing" and "I Used To Complain, Now I Don't".

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda steps out for a wall-to-wall hip-hop project on which he faces his critics ("High Road"), gets autobiographical ("Remember the Name"), shares family history ("Kenji") and emerges as a hip-hop reformist ("Cigarette"). Standing shoulder to shoulder with, among others, John Legend, members of The Roots and Styles of Beyond, The Rising Tied shines brightest in its earliest moments, where the beats and rhymes feel and sound freshest and where the positive message feels most sincere. A limited edition includes two documentary footage that follows the album's evolution, and Shinoda during the making of the video for "Petrified," all of which ultimately provides fans with interesting insights into the album and the artist himself. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
Fort Minor, the side project and solo debut for Mike Shinoda of multiplatinum, Grammy-winning Linkin Park, returns the emcee to his roots-making hip-hop. The Rising Tied, produced by Shinoda, who wrote every track and played nearly every instrument was executive produced by Jay-Z. Featuring guest appearances from Common, the Roots Black Thought, John Legend, Linkin Park DJ Joe Hahn, alt-funk rocker Kenna and two acts signed to Linkin Park's Machine Shop Recordings, Style of Beyond and Holly Brook, The Rising Tied raises the standard for unique, unadulterated hip-hop.

No Linkin Park, but suprisingly good.......2007-05-27
No Linkin Park, but suprisingly good. Some really catchy songs.
linkinparkfreak_007.......2007-01-10
If I could give this CD less then a star I would. I can't believe I was foolish enough to buy this. I listened to some of the samples for this, but it is unfortunate that the samples where the best parts of this CD. I'm not going to downgrade this. But one of the few good songs of this album is "Kenji", "High Road", and "Where'd You Go?".
As for the rest it didn't hit me right. The music didn't really flow like the material from Linkin Park. Not like Shinoda was trying to achieve the same feeling like Linkin Park. In full honesty, his voice isn't really matured enough for this. I give him credit that it has since his days from Xero demos. Even then the music flowed and did not have a heavy bass drum in the background. Look at "Kenji", listen to it carefully, you still can here the drums but it's not as heavy as some of the other songs. I've listened to the CD and decided that Shinoda's voice is more of a singing/rap vocalist. You can hear how smooth his voice is. But having him thrown in this format doesn't really work.
Personally I do give him credit for trying. Maybe if he goes for a sophomore album I would recommend something soft rock/techno/rock. Something more like "Where'd You Go"ish.
Almost, but not quite.......2007-01-10
Being a fan of the Linkin Park group first caught my attention towards Mike Shinoda's Fort Minor CD "The Rising Tied". I figured that if the rock portion of the rock/rap hybrid was removed from the equation, the music would be still enjoyable. I was certainly glad that I was right.
From Fort Minor's first Single "Where'd you Go", I thought that the toke was brought down to below the potential of what could have been another great CD from one the the LP members. After hearing "Remember the Name", my opinion was suddenly reversed. And for good reason too.
I can whole heartedly admit that I am not a fan of the Rap genre, finding the music too bass oriented, lacking in terms of musical difference, and finally the lyrics; I personally don't like the generic rap image of getting the "Bling-Bling" or "Benjamins" ($100 denotation for the states).
That being said, I can say that this album turned my head slightly when it wasn't just about getting money, women, drugs, or mouthing off to their rivals. Songs like "Cigarette", "Kenji", and "Back Home" have that inspirational tinge to it.
But with every rap album, there always has to be one or two tracks that are rather obnoxious and get on my nerves. Those tracks being "Petrified" and "The Battle". I'm not proud to say it, but Mike, not needed.
Outside what has been said, this is a rather good album. I wouldn't put it up as chart topping, but easily top 20 to 30.
Great CD.......2006-12-29
Stlyes of Beyond: cool Mike Shinoda: cooler
Now I listen to rock and metal mainly, but this is one of my favorite CDs and I have 100+ The only other rappers I like are Eminem, Young Jeezy, Akon, and Lil' Jon. Not a single track is bad. I don't understand why "drugs" and "shot" are censored on the clean version, though.
The Best Songs: (No Order)
Remember the Name
Right Now

That's 8 BEST songs! That's half the CD. All of them are awesome.
I suggest you buy this and I hope that Fort Minor will make many more albums and Linkin Park makes a "real" new CD, which hasn't happened since '02.
A Solid Hip-Hop Album That Emphasizes Commercial Rappers' Incompetence.......2006-12-24
I've never been the type of person who has enjoyed categorizing artists and individuals by the colour of their skin (i.e. "white" & "black"), but in order for me to get my opinion straight on the next paragraph, I shall have to do so.
As many people know, "white" rappers have to work a lot harder to earn their stripes in the world of Hip-Hop for supposably self-explanatory reasons. On the high end of the musical food chain is Eminem, an exceptionally talented individual who, after years of hard work and personal struggle, has become an almost-revolutionary rapper, naturally combining humour with rage into devastatingly strong, occasionally smart music. Unfortunately, there are also gangsta-wannabes like Britney Spear's ex-husband, Kevin Federline, who, with the release of his absurdly pathetic debut album "Playing With Fire", brought down almost every existent trace of credibility in the "white Hip-Hop" community in one fell swoop.
Thankfully, Fort Minor -also known as Mike Shinoda, the rapper of Rock group Linkin' Park- is far more credible and skilled than K-Fed. Unlike most of today's rappers -"black" and "white" alike- Fort Minor is the type of lesser-appreciated rapper who opts for music that digs deeper than clubs, rims, misogyny, cash, etc. (though he admittedly does indulge in gangster-esque posturing on eerie lead single "Petrified" & the heavy-hitting club anthem "In Stereo"). His rhymes are intelligent and complex and his delivery is full of passion and honesty, reminiscent of Eminem & Kanye West but nowhere near as hilarious or blatantly hateful and boastful as either. Nonetheless, "The Rising Tied" is a remarkably solid album that allows Fort Minor to flex his abilities as a rapper, lyricist and producer (yes people, he produced and arranged the beats in their entirety to downright perfection).
While the album is heavy with guest appearances, Fort Minor remains to be the album's main focus - singers Holly Brook & Jonah Matranga harmonize well on the chorus of "Where'd You Go", a darkly intimate, emotional portrayal of an individual suffering from loneliness without his or her significant other; John Legend lends his soulful vocals to the piano-driven anti-haters anthem "High Road" ; The Root's Black Thought & Hip-Hop group Styles Of Beyond demonstrate their abilities as complex, vivid storytellers alongside Fort Minor on the depressing "Right Now ; Styles Of Beyond, along with singers Kenna & Jonah Matranga, contribute to the haunting Hip-Hop/Rock gem "Red To Black" ; hook singer Bobo & Styles Of Beyond (again) lend their services to "Believe Me" ; Hip-Hop intellectualist Common & Styles Of Beyond (again!) appear on "Back Home", an introspective slice of old-school-inflected Hip-Hop that highlights the negatives and struggles of their hometowns ; Styles Of Beyond (again!!) make contributions to the musically raw "Feel Like Home" & the violin-driven "Remember The Name" ; "Slip Out The Back", another eerie slice of lyrical genius, features a barely-relevant Mr. Hahn ; and Celph Titled inhabits the entirety of the short-lived "The Battle" with a freestyle diss.
Thankfully, Fort Minor also knows how to shine without help from a talented guest list. As a matter of fact, some of the album's strongest and most personal moments come when he remains unassisted - "Cigarettes", backed up by a dark, minimalist beat and ethereal background choir vocals in the chorus, is Mike Shinoda's brutally honest ode to the superficiality, materialism and misogyny of Hip-Hop music; the sinisterly dark album standout "Kenji" focuses on the Japanese-American internees of World War II (thanks AMG for making it easier for me to phrase out); and the introspective "Get Me Gone" shows Fort Minor talking about his struggles in the music industry prior to his success with Linkin Park.
Without a doubt, "The Rising Tied" was one of the finest Hip-Hop albums to be released in 2005. Some people may scoff at the heavy guest appearances (some of whom are signed artists of Fort Minor's Machine Shop Records) or the lack of lyrical depth in "Petrified" & "In Studio", but this album is essentially brilliant and a positive step forward when it comes to the progression of "white Hip-Hop". Hell, even the album art is cool and original, which is just one of many positive reasons to buy or download this album. 5 STARS!
N.B.:
Since I bought the special edition version of this album, there's a chance that the lyrics to most (if not all) of the album's songs might not be within the booklet.

It's Will Johnson's voice that makes Centro-Matic so irresistible: He's gruff and hidden in the guitar fuzz. You strain to hear what he's saying--and that's the hallmark of his success--you keep straining. Fort Recovery marks a decade or so since Johnson formed the outfit, and he dives in with guitars blurry and brimming with sound, his voice curling around the strums like shadows, as on the relatively cleanly-played "Patience for the Ride." Centro-Matic is a couple steps away from the acclaim that the Drive-by Truckers pull down, partially because Johnson's songs are unyielding. They feedback and go slow and feature broken-flow guitar parts (to wit: "Calling Thermatico") and never are just a backdrop for lyrics. Johnson's a bit like Neil Young in that it takes several personas to figure him out: South San Gabriel is weirdly folk-pop and Centro goes for the jugular with guitars getting gritty. Perhaps he's exasperated by his music, pulling him and pushing him with a jostling rock storm of ideas until he relents and makes a killer album like Fort Recovery. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
"Centro-matic's music comes on like a sound from a distant dream, something new, yet unmistakably familiar" - Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers. "What makes (Will Johnson) such a phenomenal lyricist is that he opts for the simplest language when painting an abstract picture" - Ben Gibbard, Death Cab For Cutie, in the NY Times. "These resonant fables of half-loved underdogs, essentially preposterous scenarios reported with apocalyptic seriousness, call to mind the last two Flaming Lips discs...the band hugely rawks here in an unprecedented approximation of their live show, often summoning the moldy hearts of Mould and Hart. Hell, a harnessed Cobain twang even surfaces" - Pitchforkmedia.com.

best album i've heard in a while.......2006-09-12
pretty melodies, hard rocking guitars and drums, evocative lyrics. centro-matic songs get stuck in your head pretty quickly. they remind me of REM songs played in the style of crazy horse or pavement. this is probably my favorite of their albums. you can throw it on and listen start to finish without wanting to skip a song.
buy this CD and you'll achieve maximum sonic sweetness.
also, see the band live if you get the chance. they bring a bunch of extra rock to the songs when they play 'em live.
2006's best album.......2006-09-12
There may be a finer band on the planet, and there may be a finer songwriter, but if there is, I haven't heard it. Centro-matic are one of Will Johnson's outlets, where the rock is turned up to full Neil Young Crazy Horse, alongside the more contemplative, new-Americana, South San Gabriel and his beautiful solo work. This, the band's seventh album, may just be their best work, opening with the glorious Covered Up In Mines, and proceeding through songs that, at turns, display crunching fuzz rock, and then sweeping beauty. In fact, it is difficult not to use the word 'masterpiece' in any review. The core of the work is Will Johnson - his songs work so well on acoustic guitar that, worked up into full band versions, and accentuated with rock solid instrumentation and the great feeling of studio improvisation, they can't help but dig their way in, until repeated listening is not just desirable, but essential. Easily the best album of the year, so far.
Underapprciated and Overlooked?.......2006-06-23
Surprising that there aren't more reviews on this being that its been out for 4 months. Take the elements of Stones period "Exile on Main Street" a little Byrds melodic edge, and mix things up a `bit and you've got one of the best contemporary rock bands currently on the planet. They've smoothed the edges a bit on "Fort Recovery" but still evoke emotional response from anyone within listening distance. From the hypnotic induced beat of "Calling Thermatico" to the poetically stated "The Fugitives Have Won" Will Johnson's writing contiunes to mature well beyond most of what passes as lyrical content by major label acts.
Simply put, once you've discovered these Denton,Texas masters your hooked for life! Highly recommended for beginners as well as ardent supporters!
Great stuff.......2006-06-08
This is a fantastic album, the best I have heard in a while. The sound is something of a mix between Son Volt and Drive by Truckers, but completely unique and better than anything those two have done recently. I really like the sound; it is not "poppy" at all like some of Wilco's stuff, or like the Band of Horses new album that is over-hyped. The songs are real and of high quality throughout, not a clunker on the album. This is one that will hold up over the years.

his hip-hop identity, Fort Minor. With an album due out at the end of '05

I loved Rising Tide. but after playing it for a few days, I grew quite tired of it. and after listening to the Mixtape, I realized what I was missing. Dope.......2006-04-18
This is the best mixtape I've ever heard. I'm not really into the mixtape scene, primarily because most of them recycle the same beats too much for me, but this one is way different. Fort Minor got creative with this one.
The production on this mixtape is off the charts. It makes the cd. Shinoda kills this mixtape production wise, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers in the game. This cd contains some innovative sampling from bands you wouldn't expect to hear on a hip hop mixtape including: Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, and Bloc Party; and some of the beats on here will amaze you.
Shinoda is not the most gifted emcee, but he is capable of holding his own on the mic. Apathy and Lupe Fiasco spit some fire on this cd though. Styles of Beyond and Celph Titled have their moments on the mic as well. There is even surprise guest appearance by Juelez Santana on here, who spits a hot verse also.
The official cd Fort Minor put out-"The Rising Tied" used to get a lot of air time in my whip, but this mixtape has pretty much replaced it in my cd rotation. One of my boys told me "DUDE, You GOTTA burn this cd for me" after hearing three songs on it. Fort Minor: We Major is an underground gem.
Here is a quick summary of this review--You want to own this cd. The End.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with, among others, John Legend, members of the Roots, and Styles of Beyond, The Rising Tied shines brightest in its earliest moments, where the beats and rhymes feel and sound freshest and where the positive message feels most sincere. This limited edition includes two documentary footage that follows the album's evolution, and Shinoda during the making of the video for "Petrified," all of which ultimately provides fans with interesting insights into the album and the artist himself. --Jedd Beaudoin

My daughter loves the band!.......2007-03-27
This CD was not purchased for me, however my daughter loves the band and thinks very highly of this cd as it is a rare one with additional tracks not found on the more common version.
Rememer The Name.......2006-12-01
If there ever was a sounder cry for change in Hip-Hop, Mike Shinoda would definately join the ranks. Leading the charge for something new in Hip-Hop, Shinoda's Fort Minor project delivers. Simply put, get this album.
That is, of course if you like Hip-Hop and know that it needs more than affection for booty and declarations of machine gun clips.
mike shinoda is not a good rapper.......2006-11-23
the production is good, and I can see how this would be cool if I were a Linkin Park from, but coming at this from a hip-hop avenue, this album is wack. Mike Shinoda's rhymes are at best medicore, and his flow is weak.
Fort Minor - The Rising Tied.......2006-08-31
After the success of his band, Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda decided to finally release his long dreamed about rap album. Known as Fort Minor, Shinoda took a long time creating the tracks and used real live instruments in almost if not all of them.

This album is jam packed with certified bangers! There's only a couple weak tracks and the rest are near classic. The production was handled very well and hopefully Mike will release a follow-up somewhere down the line.
He Really Does Bring It.......2006-08-03
Mr. Mike Shinoda proves that he has something to say, and a message to spread. It's not often at all these days that "second-hand rap (as stated in Cigarettes)" is heard. I love every single track. From Right Now to Cigarettes, he gives that message. And, he proves he can rock the party with Petrified, Remember the Name & In Stereo. My personal favorite is Slip Out The Back. Mike may not be the greatest MC out there, but he has talent as everyone already knows from "Where'd You Go". I really don't know what else to say. It's a great album. Go buy it if you want rap with a message.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Great Music.......2007-05-13
This is a great CD that's not only extremely affordable but is also extremely enjoyable. The music of William Grant Still stands out as some of the finest music composed by American composers of the 20th century. In Memorium is particularly poignant. The rest of the CD is great too.
The Very American Music of William Grant Still.......2005-08-05
To tell the truth, I wanted to start this review by saying that William Grant Still is one of those one-work wonders of a composer of which the opera world has so many examples (Leoncavallo, Giordano, etc., etc.). But then I listened a few times more to "Africa," given its premiere recording here. Its melodies and musical gestures may be less striking than those in Still's one big work, the Afro-American Symphony, also included on this disc. On the other hand, "Africa" has some very compelling music, too, and is colorfully orchestrated in Still's signature manner. Just listen to the soft solo for timpani at the start: this sets the mood immediately for the first movement, entitled "Land of Peace." It is indeed peaceful music but with some added spice to keep the listener on his or her toes. The last movement, "Land of Superstition," seems to me rather bland given its title, but overall, this music is an attractive travelogue in the manner of Virgil Thomson's film scores from the 1930s, anticipating them in fact by several years. Along with Thomson, Still can probably be credited with pioneering the use of pop-musical influences to effectively create local color.
That truth is even more evident in the Afro-American Symphony. You have to sit up and take notice when a symphony begins with a blues refrain that's quickly answered by a quirky little jazz riff in the winds. It's like a little scene from a musical of the 1930s: chase your blues away, says that little jazz riff. But then you realize this is a genuine symphonic first movement in well-argued sonata form, and you've got to be impressed.
The notes to this recording point out that the bouncy third movement (with banjo obbligato, first time in a symphony certainly!) has a main theme very similar to George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." Actually, Still came up with his melody before Gershwin wrote his song, but Still and Gershwin supposedly influenced one another, so maybe Gershwin cribbed a bit from Still. Hearing the very dramatic episodes in the first and last movements that seem to forecast scenes in "Porgy and Bess," I wonder if Still didn't influence Gershwin much more than the reverse.
Be that as it may, I find, as with "Africa," that the symphony is let down a bit by the finale, though it does end with an appropriately dramatic peroration, leaving a bold impression. All things considered, this is one of the best symphonies written by an American and certainly one of the most American of all.
I have nothing but praise for the performances. The Fort Smith Symphony takes this music to heart and presents it with great feeling and with the kind of abandon that comes when musicians have lived with music for a while and have gotten it into their blood. Sure, this is a regional orchestra instead of one of America's Big Five, but if so, these excellent performances just speak to the general quality of American orchestras even out in the hinterlands. Conductor John Jeter probably deserves a good deal of credit as well. And while I'm at it, kudos to the Naxos engineers too. The recording has fine presence and detail. Given Naxos' price, this disc is the way to go if you want to acquire William Grant Still's classic.
Long Lost Symphony.......2005-07-28
It's one of the tragedies of the 20th century that Still's Symphonic Suite AFRICA has never been recorded in its symphonic version before. Two versions for piano don't begin to give an idea of its rich color and expressiveness. In spite of the no-name orchestra (so to speak) this is a good recording of a truly beautiful work. I don't think Still ever composed anything better. The opening track, IN MEMORIAM, is also a novelty. Sit back and enjoy!
Catherine Parsons Smith (author of WILLIAM GRANT STILL: A STUDY IN CONTRADICTIONS)
Amazing!.......2005-04-21
This is a great CD of the world premiere recording of the remarkable American classical music composer, William Grant Still. Performed by the Fort Smith Symphony, under the direction of John Jeter, it is beautiful and inspiring. The viola section plays exceptionally well.
Dynamic Orchestra.......2005-04-10
The Fort Smith Symphony under the direction of John Jeter is a dynamic orchestra. This CD is an excellent example of the talents of the musicians synchronized by their director's many worldwide experiences conducting symphonies. Fort Smith is a moderate sized community located in the heartland of the U.S. The community and the region are fortunate to have such dedicated talent in their local culture. I hope to see future CD recordings of this caliber from the Fort Smith Symphony.

Customer Reviews:
A mid-eighties classic.......2005-06-06
The title track is one of George's most famous songs but, perhaps surprisingly, is the only number one country hit from this chart (based on Billboard). The two other singles (The cowboy rides away, The fireman) both made the top five in the country charts.
Overall, this album is typical of George's early albums with its mix of ballads and western swing-influenced up-tempo songs. Instrumentation consists of steel, electric and acoustic guitars together with fiddle, mandolin, keyboards, bass and drums. Apart from the three tracks released as singles, I particularly like Any old time, You're dancing this dance all wrong and Honky tonk Saturday night.
If you enjoy George's music enough to want more than just the hits, you will derive a lot of enjoyment from this album.
A GREAT CD.......2005-01-01
This is top notch George, and there is not a bad song on it. "Honky Tonk Saturday Night" is a real highlight here because you can't get it on "Strait Out Of The Box". With country classics like "The Fireman", and the title track, on it, it should be viewed as one of his best CDs. Something else great about it, is that you cannot get most of the other songs, anywhere else. So if you are a GS fan, you should have it in your collection.
A PIVOTAL ALBUM IN STRAIT'S STELLAR CAREER.......2004-02-11
While it's difficult to say where and when George Strait's career really took off, many view DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND as the pivotal album that catapulted Strait straight to the top of the Country Music world. This album garnered numerous awards, acclaim and is a solid continuing favorite among Country Music fans everywhere.
Studded with hits like the title track DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND, YOU'RE DANCIN' THIS DANCE ALL WRONG, COWBOY RIDES AWAY and FIREMAN, this album also offers other tracks that have become hits. But then that's an old story for George Strait--every track seems as fresh and as bright as the title song and there's never any filler to muddy things up.
Douglas McAllister
GS's big artistic statement.......2002-12-09
This album is a country standard and the cornerstone of George Strait's career. We all know and love the singles (the title track, "The Cowboy Rides Away," and the irresistible "The Fireman"), but it's the rest of the album that really shines. It's certainly more than "filler."
"Any Old Time" is a quick, breezy, fun sing-a-long with playful fiddle and guitar work. "I Need Someone Like Me," "Honky Tonk Saturday Night," "I Should Have Watched That First Step," and "What Did You Expect Me to Do" are toe-tapping honky-tonk numbers; songs you might think you want to skip until you get about ten seconds into them and start singing along. "Love Comes from the Other Side of Town" juxtaposes a light-hearted melody and arrangement with a pretty serious subject, cheating. Kind of like the country version of a punk rock idea, I guess. Regardless, it's too catchy to ignore.
The standout track on this album is the ballad "You're Dancin' This Dance All Wrong," my favorite GS song other than "The Chair." It's a bittersweet love ballad, celebrating a new love and looking back on an old one. Any other singer would have either slaughtered this song or turned it into a gaudy showcase for his voice, but GS's (as always) low-key, human delivery makes this song perfect.
This album is really best listened to in one sitting. And at under thirty minutes, that's not much of a problem. I give it my highest recommendation.
Good, but typical of country's slapdash approach to albums.......2001-08-09
Country music and I have had somewhat of an on-again, off-again relationship. Back when I was about 9 or 10, I was in love with CMT long before it became "MTV for the heartland". I bought many albums from great country acts of the time like The Judds, Mark Collie (where on Earth has he gone?), Brooks & Dunn, etc. That was also when country music was still very much country and pop music was on its own plane of existence. As today's country music becomes even more indistinguishable from top 40 pop radio, I'm sure I'm like a lot of traditional country fans who are looking back to the older stuff for comfort. Now that I'm back in love with country again, one of the old guard artists I'm growing to love is George Strait. When he first arrived in the early 1980s, country music was undergoing yet another identity crisis with it sounding more like Adult Contemporary pop than real country. However, Strait was more entrenched in Western Swing than anything else, and if you wanted a tried & true country artist, you needn't look any further. But I will admit that as good a musician as Strait is, he's by no means an albums artist. He's pretty much followed the same formula for 20 years, a 10-song album of traditional country music with about 3 or 4 hit singles and selling a million copies. Of course, a lot of times, these album soon become interchangeable, and while some people consider this one DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND (1984) one of George's best, I beg to differ. As you can tell from the title, the album was probably created to back up that hit single, meaning that only a few other songs on here measure up to that great one, while the rest is basically pleasant filler. Indeed, the title track was just one of many #1 country hits for George, proving that while even such old guard personalities like Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers were hooking up with pop music's elite, a small trace of country's tradition still remained. A majority of the songs on the album are of the not-quite-a-ballad variety, & two more songs like that became hits with the Roy Rogers-sounding "The Cowboy Rides Away" and the rocking "The Fireman" both reaching #5. As expected the hits were well chosen, but only a few others are just as good. Another beautiful ballad "You're Dancin' This Dance All Wrong", and the gently swinging "Honky Tonk Saturday Night" & "Love Comes From The Other Side Of Town" are as good as those hits, and should have been released in their own right. The rest of the album seems a bit uninspired in comparison, with a lot of these songs just whisking by in the 2 1/2 minutes they last without leaving much of an impression. Nowadays, country music has begun to exploit the longer length of compact discs with as much as 14 songs on an album, and often better yet letting them establish themselves a little longer than just 2 1/2 minutes. Whether or not those albums sound very country though is a matter of opinion. But back in the age of vinyl where an album can last at least 40 minutes long, country music was still a bit in the past creating albums that barely lasted a half-hour, and not all of it very good sometimes. And even with a staunch traditionalist like George Strait, he could pay to spend at least a little more time with his music than the 29 minutes that DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND lasts. But maybe George is slowly working his way into the modern times with some of his recent albums being given more time to breathe, and sounding less like the Western Swing of his earliest albums but still more country than your average Tim McGraw record.
