3 out of 5 stars I agree with Daniel maltzmen........2007-07-04

I love NIN, and I love the new album, but Trent Reznor, like many successfull musical artists, is a product in the eyes of the record company. trnet has allready made it clear to fans and press alike that he is against the corpoarate interrest to banf NIN fans out of their money. He is also rightfully insulting his recording contract and claiming that they are trying to exploit his artistic interrests for a few more pennies, and alot more hype than he is seeking. If you know Trent, you know that he is brutally honest with the public, and has little to apologize for...so in that regard.....if your a must have collector....buy this. Otherwise, your wasting your time here. Year Zero is epic, but so far the singles are just an avalanche of the haves vrs. the have nots!

3 out of 5 stars Much better than Part 1, but for Halo collectors only.......2007-07-01

"Survivalism", the lead single from Nine Inch Nails' smashing and politically charged album "Year Zero", was released in two parts as a single. "Survivalism, Part 1" featured the song itself along with the "Tardusted Remix" (which is also featured here as well). "Survivalism, Part 2" features all of the above, as well as the instrumental version of "Greater Good", and the rocking video for "Survivalism". You get more here than you do for the rip off that was "Survivalism, Part 1", yet this single still feels like it's meant for hardcore Halo collectors only. What you get here isn't bad, but there still could have been more put here, and the disc itself feels less like a "Part 2" and more like a "Part 1" with bonus tracks. That aside though, you get more bang for your buck here than with "Part 1", but either way, if you're a Halo collector, you'll probably be picking both up regardless.

2 out of 5 stars Only for the Halo collector.......2007-06-16

"Survivalism" (Halo 23) has been released in two parts. Both part I and II contain "Survivalism" the album version and "Survivalism--the tardusted remix." Part two also contains an instrumental version of "The Greater Good" and a video of "Survivalism."

This is the type of Halo that's really just for the NIN completeist, fans who must own every NIN Halo. "Year Zero" (Halo 24) already has "Survivalism" and the tardusted remix included here isn't all that great. It's kind of interesting, with a slower tempo and more layers and effects than the original, but it doesn't really hold up for repeated listens. The instrumental of "The Greater Good" is pretty much like the album version, but without Reznor's voice-over whispering. The video of "Survivalism" is really cool, with cameras spying in on people in a building as they live their lives.

If you are a massive NIN fan, this Halo is worth owning for the novelty two songs and the video, but for everyone else, just stick to "Year Zero." If you do decide to pick up Halo 23, make sure you get part II, as it includes the instrumental version of "The Greater Good" and a video of "Survivalism."

4 out of 5 stars Great song, pretty good remix.......2007-05-12

Both Survivalism and its remix had to grow on me before I loved them. I think for that reason I rank it 4 stars. The remix on this single is not a lot like any remix I've ever heard from Nine Inch Nails. My first thought when listening was that the beat sounded more like it was meant for a slow rap song. After a few listens though I really like it. The instrumental version of "Greater Good" is a nearly unnoticeable change (to me). The first time I heard the original I thought it was an instrumental because the singing is so soft anyhow. I don't think this would be a good single to get if you are a casual listener or are looking for a first single to buy since there are other singles by NIN that have a bit more depth and are more all-encompassing

    5 out of 5 stars cool.......2007-05-08

it's nin and it is a halo. the music sounds like nin but the singing what is that. the game he created is cool.over all the single is cool.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-04-14

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEAUTIFUL KAREN LIVES ON FOR ETERNITY............2007-04-12

To review this cd collection is simple - short and sweet it has all the hits plus some added extras and the remastering is pure perfection. It seems that with every new collection that came out Richard tinkered with the orchestration, vocal intensity and the songs over time lost all their essence of beauty and power that was there when first recorded.

These songs are all great due to the wonderful arrangements by Richard, the excellent song selection but foremost the rare vocal ability that Karen possessed. Her voice was always so pure with open, honest emotion and an ever constant tinge of melancholy/sadness. To change this in any way denies us of the gift that is Karen Carpenter. Her voice is one of the best of all times. Perfection cannot be enhanced as those other collections tried to do.

These songs I can guarantee are the original versions remastered perfectly and it is very emotional to hear that voice come out so clear, so pure - the voice of an angel. These are the original songs in their original form as you remember them.

All Carpenter fans - this cd will be a dream come true. Purchase it and Karen will live on for you forever.

    5 out of 5 stars FutureLoveSoulMusic.......2007-01-30

This EP has more style than any average full length recording out there right now. Meshell is an artist who is more and more progressive with each new recording; which is what R&B artists were about during the golden age of soul/r&b music in the late sixties and early to mid-seventies.
This is not music for the pop/r&b listener stuck in the right now. The tone is political, religious and sensual, while the music defies category, you can pinpoint various styles & influences within.
She pushes furthur the imaginary boundaries of what an r&b artist can do by incorporating african tones into her music. This kind of daring musical exploration is sorely lacking in the popular r&b style today. And to think Meshell's debut started on a Plantation. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars With Meshell, change is ALWAYS good... .......2007-01-27

let me put a few things out there now...

I'm a fan of Meshell. She's hands down my favorite artist out there creating music today and i think she is appaulingly under-rated across the board. She is a beast...ESPECIALLY LIVE. If you have the opportunity to catch a live Meshell gig, go. She is most creative playing and creating in the moment with live musicians. You wont be disapointed. I love her live stuff so much that i tend to look at her studio albums as 'scetches' or blueprints in a way...she creates those sketches and bluprints and uses them as a foundation to really create on the next level & improvise live on the stage. Rarely, (if ever) will you go to a Meshell show and here her do a song just like it sounded on the record....she always takes it somehere else and puts a new perspective on it. For me, it doesn't get any better than that.

...if you know Meshell at all, then you KNOW she is consistent in ONE area more than any other...and that is that she's ALWAYS changing and evolving musically...you KNOW that she won't hesitate to completely 'flip the script' from one project to the next...she doesn't ususally stay in one musical place for long....and yet at the SAME time there IS a consistent thread running through EVERYTHING she does....and that thread is, the respect for, attention to, and passion for the CRAFT of creating and expressing as honestly and fearlessly as she can in a musical way ...

so that should give you a hint that this 'Article3' EP is something VERY different than the Meshell album that preceeded it (which was the mostly instrumental improvisational jazz oriented, and grammy nominated, and beautiful "Dance of the Infidel" album). Just like "Dance of the Infidel" was very different from the cosmic soul reggae vibes of the wonderul record that came before it, which was the "Comfort Woman" record...which was different from...well, you get the picture.

The 'Article 3' EP is, well...its something else...and quite honestly to quote a friend of mine i think 'some folks won't be ready'. ;) Will big mass Radio play anything from this? Probably not... because Radio is too busy playing mostly uninspired throwaway dredge....which is why i don't listen to Radio. But who needs radio when you've got folks like Meshell out there still challenging themselves AND us on so many creative levels? Musically, thematically...again Meshell takes another step in her own direction without even hesitating...and if one isn't too caught up in genre's & hooks & hits, then you'll be able to enjoy her journey with her and be surprized by the enexpected turns it takes...

So here's my breakdown of the Article 3 EP...

    1."haditha":
this is an intro 'vibe setting' type of track...there's an eerieness and ominous feel about it due in part to the subject matter (prophecies about the 'end of times' armegedon type of stuff). Clips from a speech by hamza yusuf over the intro music. 'Structurally this wouldn't have been out of place on her other album that came out several years back "Cookie" which contained some clips of various speeches as 'tone' setting elements. Anyway, this ominous vibed intro its a perfect set-up for the next track...

    2."the sloganeer":
immediately pulsing & churning and in your face. Here the rythym of this tune is almost techno or new wave-esque, maybe something like 'industrial punk'? (i think i just made that last 'genre' up myself :). I'm not really into the 'genre' thing, but i know some people are so thats my sad attempt to try to categorize this one ;)...very straight ahead and uptempo...but it doesn't feel like a techno song per'se...just the speed and rythym of it. Deantoni Parks drumming is just full of pulsing energy. Mike Severson's guitars are churning along.(his guitar work was a highlight from a Rome show Meshell did back in May 2006). And there's Meshell on bass and vocals. her layered vocals here are really very interesting to me...they kind of float over the churning pulsing music. the lilty floating subtle melody of the different vocal layers on top provide an intriguing contrast and compliment the fast rythyms below. very cool. The lyrics are very intriguing on this one too. Its been mentioned that this doesn't really sound like anything that meshell has done on her own albums before. i agree with that to a degree. I think we may have seen hints of it before here & there, and on a few of her side collaborations/projects (though i can't recall specifically which ones at the moment)...but this track is really something unique. Personally i really dig the heck out of it...ESPECIALLY after hearing the LIVE version of it back to back against the studio version.

    3. "shirk":
I lot of people are talking about the uptempo tunes (like 'The Sloganeer' above and 'Article 3' below) on this EP .... but trust me don't sleep on THIS slow almost acoustic ballad here! Shirk is a seemingly simple song in a way. It features Pat Metheny & Herve Sambe on acoustic guitars and Davi Viera on percussion. The vocals are the most magical thing on this track for me. Haunting and sad melodies. It features Meshell and Oumou Sangare's voices. We all know Meshells voice can have such a wonderful expressive & rich tone to it...so that shouldn't be a suprise really. But before this i had never heard Oumou Sangare's vocals (that i know of anyway) and Oumou's voice is just absolutely amazing as well...they weave together JUST right. this is one of those 'perfect little concise' songs. It expresses exactly what it intended to express and doesn't leave you wanting for anything. A quiet beautiful haunting tune ... a real nice compliment to aggressive track that preceeds it ... as well as the aggressive track that follows it which is...

    4. "article 3"
wow...another barn burner here! VERY uptempo along the lines of 'The Sloganeer'. Love the intro of this song...Deantoni Parks drums kicking and moving you along right away, Thandiswa Mazwai provides some of the vocals (does anyone know what language that Thandiswa is singing at the begining? If someone is able to translate the lyrics of her parts i would owe ya one!!), Davi Viera on percussion...and theres Pat Metheny AND MESHELL both on guitar! (How cool is that?) Meshell also is on bass & vocals here too. Another song that is really impossible for me to categorize...its so kinetic...just FULL of energy and urgency. Different voices and phrases are flying in out and around each other, in front of and behind the music. Very cool track. I can't wait to hear this one live too.

    5."eliptical":
Of all of the tracks on this EP, this one might seem to more closely resemble some of the Meshell music that some Meshell fans may be most farmilar with. Its a spacey soulful funky midtempo groover...nice bubbly perculating Meshell bass line throughout. meshell also providing some vocals and hi hat. Programming by Amatus-sami, Graham Haynes on cornet, Brandon Ross on guitar, Davi Vieira on percussion...and last, but CERTAINLY not least...Sy Smith providing the main vocals. (Can i get some love for Sy Smith?).

so there you have it, a EP little sampler of some tunes that may show up on her next full length.

By the way, for info on all things Meshell (including audio & visual clips of some of her live performances) you may want to go to:

(FYI: in case you're wondering where i'm coming from...my musical leanings are mostly towards '70's SOULl' also with lots of 70's rock & pop in the mix too because thats all the stuff i grew up on. Chaka Khans voice is hard to beat. LOVE Ray Charles & Jimi Hendrix. Love early James Brown (from his early days and into the 70's), The Beatles, Bob Marley, Led Zep, Parliament / Funkadelic. Dig some Jazz stuff too, but mainly the older stuff. Was also a big fan of early-to-mid 80's era Prince (when he was hungry and fearless). Love all of the Police's stuff and lots of the Sting stuff. Some of the 90's stuff i liked: Smashing Pumpkins, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Soundgarden, Maxwell, and yeah Nirvana too. Some more 'modern' folks i love: Sade, Jill Scott, Dangelo, The Roots, Gnarles Barkely, Mos Def, Brand New Heavies. My kids are getting me into System of a Down and some of the other 'new rockers' too. Of the folks out there today Peter Gabriel is probably one of my all time favorites who is still out there doing interesting stuff as well. And of course, as i mentioned earlier, Meshell is TOPS grade A #1 in my book.)

Unless you are a DIE HARD collector, do not buy this. Both tracks are on part 2 (which is a halo, and which in no way does the disc or case mention being a "part" of any set) as well as an additional remix track. Comes with the video and a rather nice looking case. If you buy part 1, leave it in the plastic and forget you have it for about 5 years.

    1 out of 5 stars A rip-off.......2007-06-24

As die hard Nine Inch Nails fans no doubt know, collecting "Halos" comes with the territory. However, out of all the single releases carrying the Halo label to be released, none has ever been as much as a rip-off as "Survivalism, Part 1". Featuring the "Year Zero" album version as well as the Tardusted Remix (which actually may be better than the normal track), "Survivalism" as a whole isn't a bad song one bit, and this rating does not reflect the song itself. Besides the two versions of the song, there is nothing else included on this disc at all. That's right, and remember, there is also a "Survivalism, Part 2" that features all of the above plus more, so if you haven't gotten the drift yet, you are getting ripped off. As a previous reviewer already mentioned, no matter how much of a die hard Nine Inch Nails fan or Halo collector you might be, do not pick this disc up. Pick up "Survivalism, Part 2" instead if you must, and leave this disc on the shelf.

1 out of 5 stars No reason for fans to buy this.......2007-06-16

"Survivalism" (Halo 23) has been released in two parts. Both part I and II contain "Survivalism" the album version and "Survivalism--the tardusted remix."

Even if you are a massive NIN fan and must collect every Halo, there is no reason to buy part I, as part II also contains an instrumental version of "The Greater Good" and a video of "Survivalism." I want to be clear that I am not rating the actual song "Survivalism" one star, as it is quite strong (even if it isn't the best song off "Year Zero.") Rather, I am rating the value of this single at one star because there is no reason for anyone to own it as part II contains the same content as part one as well as another track and a video.

Even if you are an absolute NIN junkie-obsessive and must own parts I and II for the sake of owning both parts in a NIN Halo, you needn't worry about that. On neither part I or part II of "Survivalism" is there any reference to either being part I or II. So you can buy what is labeled as "Part II" and still own a complete Halo collection if that's what you're aiming for.

Trent Reznor has made it clear that he disapproves of the label marketing the same song in two parts, as he realizes it is a rip-off to his fans. That said, if you are a Halo collector and must own a complete collection, stick with what is labeled as "part II."

    1 out of 5 stars The Warning..........2007-05-15

Trent used to release the best CD singles. By far. No one else even came close. Remember how cool the CD singles for 'Closer' and 'March of the Pigs' were? The Fragile and The Downward Spiral each had their own "album" of remixes. The content was always wholly original, and always an interesting reinterpretation of the song -- never just a slight variation. Then came the last CD single from With Teeth, Every Day Is Exactly The Same. More than half the content was previously released on the previous CD singles. A definite downgrade from past releases.

Now comes Survivalism pt. I and II. Between BOTH these discs, there is ONE original remix, and ONE instrumental that is otherwise identical to the album track. On top of that, pt. II has all the content pt. I, i.e.: pt. I has no reason to exist.

Trent's singles ain't what they used to be, and buyer beware because word is that 'Capital G' (the next single to be released) is going to get the same "pt. I and pt. II, but pt. I is pointless" treatment as this.

C'mon Trent, you're better than this...

4 out of 5 stars All a Part of This Great Nation..........2007-05-13

Trent's new single from Year Zero is definitely a good one. Unfortunately there's only one other version of the song on here but in my humble opinion it is better than the originonal. If you want a buy worth the money, go for Survivalism, Pt. 2. That one has the video and one other version of the song for less money. An even better deal is Year Zero.

Now I love nine inch nails like it was my bread and butter. But the only thing new that comes with this single is ..... the live version of Love Is Not Enough. All other tracks including the 'ONLY' video can be found on different places (Like on the official NIN website, well for the video that is) But if you must have all the 'Halos' Then this is another product that you must know. Sadly enough not for the content, but for the collection..... yeah.

2 out of 5 stars Another light-weight single from "With Teeth".......2006-04-05

Only", the second single from "With Teeth", has something in common with its predecessor-- its of limited value. I picked it up and was pretty disappointed.

The single itself, "Only", isn't one of the ones I particularly enjoy on the album-- its got a nice enough funky bass line and drum beat, but Reznor's sing-speak "Down In It" styled vocal grates and the piece doesn't particularly hold my interest. Certainly it lacks the immediacy of "Down In It", and I'm generally inclined to want Reznor to look forward, not backward.

The b-sides aren't much better-- the DFA mix of "The Hand That Feeds" is yet another remix, this one pretty much a full techno mix. It's quite different, replete with an odd panting sample that gets somewhat irritating as the piece never ends (it rambles on for well over seven minutes). The live version of "Love is Not Enough" is the only saving grace on the single-- while its not one of the better songs on the record, its decent enough, and live it got bigger. The arrangement is the same, but its more direct and in your face.

For the casual listener, skip this one. The fan will be buying it regardless of what I say, but it's in line with the recent singles, not the older (and superior) ones.

    4 out of 5 stars Cool song.......2006-03-24

This song is pretty catchy, but the remixes are pretty bad, the only change in the Love is not enough, is that there is live drums. Instead of buying this, buy the whole cd, unless you're an extreme NIN collector

5 out of 5 stars there is no you there is ONLY me.......2005-11-07

I rather enjoy the new and improved sounds of Nine Inch Nails. This is the catchiest Nails song since....The Hand that Feeds. The beat is hard to erase. the words are easy to remember, the song is greatly admired. The use of in-studio real drums rather than the industrial drum machine beats as days of old. more calmer Nails than pre-Fragile material, a change indeed but nonetheless, masterpiece. The video is very interesting, in an office like setting, very non-ninesque.

    4 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Skies?.......2006-03-31

Looking over the track listing, we have all the Joel classics here... "Piano Man"... "Just The Way You Are"... "We Didn't Start The Fire"... "She's Got A Way" and of course, "Scandinavian Skies". Huh? Don't remember that one? Dig out your copy of Nylon Curtain. If you're putting together the Joel staples on one CD, I highly doubt that sits on top of the pile of essential songs. But aside from the obvious choices that could go in place of "Scandinavian Skies", it has a nice selection of songs for the casual listener. But of course, the casual listener would be better off dropping the extra money for the Greatest Hits 1-3 Box. Overall, 4 stars on the weight of the songs included, not on the ones they didn't.

3 out of 5 stars Piano Man From The Standards.......2005-07-22

There are just so many people that sometimes have to know a artist through the sounds of Broadway. Why? Because there is no other way you could find the songs he or she has made but there. For one of the greatest artists of the U.S., Billy Joel, he has truly shown that truthful with the status of Movin' Out. Although it is sad he hasn't recorded a new tune in almost a decade. His songs still remain true from the heart after all this time. Sadly, when it comes to hits packages, they almost hit the nail the nail on the head completely, especially for Billy Joel.

Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel is a single disc collection consisting of 19 tracks that the piano man has truly made a spectacle of. The songs here have really been remastered very well and still show his music simply is still alive. There are so many great songs here that are highlighted here including Piano Man, River Of Dreams, the hard driven We Didn't Start The Fire, all the way to Soul-driven tracks like Tell Her About It, The Grammy-Winning Just The Way You Are, Uptown Girl, and Movin' Out (Anthony's Song).

Yet, with the good sides about this collection, there are a lot of disadvantages from this collection. One of them, is that the collection is a little bit expensive, where you could get most of these tracks from another Billy Joel collection like 2001's Essential Billy Joel. Another disadvantage is that the album also does overshadow so many good songs as well like, The Longest Time, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, A Matter of Trust, and the upbeat Big Shot from 52nd Street.

Nevertheless, Billy Joel has truly made so many great songs for all to enjoy. It is just sad that with a generation that is more into acts like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, doesn't know how brilliant Billy Joel has made pop music. Still, Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel isn't a bad collection especially for anybody who doesn't have any of his records, but die hard longtime fans might want to avoid this collection. It doesn't really go to extremes.

This is really a classic. The orchestrated live versions of the songs just sound incredible. It's a must have for any fan of Ye.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, it's that simple. .......2006-05-15

This is the most amazing live hip-hop CD I have ever heard. The fact that it took a beat junkie like Ye to come up with something like this is NOT suprising in the least. It sounds a lot like the Live Portishead album of a while back. The string section does not overpower Ye and the beats, but take the songs to such a different place, it's mind blowing. The subtelty of it is amazing. I'm sure anyone checking this out is familiar with all of these songs, and this might not be up some peoples ally. But damn, It was recorded at Abby Road, you can almost hear John Lennon smile in the strings. This man will single handedly change hip-hop forever. Much like the Beatles changed pop music. Brilliant.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-05-12

Once again Kanye returns with another gem...While not an official LP this Live Album recorded in the Abbey Road Studios home of the Beatles, takes Kanye and hip hop music to a whole new dimension...

From Track 1-13 all of Kanye's hits packed into one cd played exceptionally well backed by a 17 piece orchestra (hence "Late Orchestration") and special appearances from G.O.O.D Music including John Legend, GLC, Consequence, and also Lupe Fiasco on the Hit "Touch The Sky"...

Even if your not a hip hop or R&B fan you can still appreciate the music and the production layed out by Kanye...Still not sure why he didn't release this in the U.S. but for you true Ye fans this CD is also available on DVD packed with alot of extra footage of his 5 music videos off Late Registration, interviews, and never before seen footage...

4 out of 5 stars Best of Art Garfunkel.......2006-07-31

A strong set, all his best. Simon could not have made it without Garfunkel's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Superb voice, brilliant compilation.......2005-02-28

Art's musical partnership with Paul Simon broke up partly because Art wanted to focus more on acting, although it may be that Paul (who wrote their songs) was jealous of the attention given to Art (whose voice was superior to Paul's) for singing classics such as Bridge over troubled water. Whatever the causes of the split, Art spent much less time in the recording studio after the split than Paul did. Thus, this compilation draws on far fewer albums than a corresponding compilation of Paul's music. Still, there's plenty of quality in the music here.

Originally written in the thirties, I only have eyes for you had been revived very successfully in the fifties by the Flamingos, who had a major American hit with it. Their version didn't chart in the UK but Art took the song to the UK number one spot in 1975. Bright eyes (from Watership down) replaced Gloria Gaynor's anthemic I will survive as UK number one in 1979 and spent six weeks at the top. Art only had one other UK hit as a solo artist (Since I don't have you) - it was the follow-up to Bright eyes, but it was only a minor hit.

Elsewhere on this compilation you can find Art's excellent interpretations of other classic songs. What a wonderful world, which features Paul Simon and James Taylor, caused some to speculate on a reunion with Paul, but although there have been occasional reunions since, this recording was a one-off at the time. Break away, a top ten UK hit for its writers (Gallagher and Lyle) was a hit for Art in some other countries.

There are many other excellent tracks here - some original, some covers, although All I want (a top ten American hit) is not included. It didn't chart in Britain but with only three UK hits, it could easily have been included.

As an overview of Art's solo music, this is excellent for Brits and expatriate Brits but I suspect that Americans will opt for a different compilation - one that includes All I want.

    5 out of 5 stars Second Avenue?.......2002-08-14

Any recording of Art's magnificent voice is worth a listen and probably a purchase. This is a good collection of the obvious 'hits' plus a few others. My only complaint is where is the 1974 single "Second Avenue?" For serious Art fans, this is a challenging piece to track down. It's on the U. S. "Garfunkel" collection (circa 1988) in a slightly altered (shorter) form than the single. "Best of..." would have been a natural venue to include the original single, but no such luck.

5 out of 5 stars Art- He`s Simply the Best.......2000-07-13

A great collection of Arts solo stuff, which include his 2 brillant chart no one`s "I Only Have Eyes For You" & "Bright Eyes." There is quite a few songs off "The Art Garfunkel Album" such as the romantic "I Believe When I Fall In Love It`ll Be For Ever" & "99 Miles From L.A." "Watermark" from the album from the same name. But surprisingly only a a couple of tracks, from the very well put together album "Fate For Breakfast." All in all it`s a great album, with a great selection of songs. So if you like chill out tunes, after a stressful day, buy this album. I can guantee, it will de-stress you.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best, Indeed!.......2000-02-25

This Art Garfunkel "best of..." CD is far superior to the two compilations that Sony US has released ("Garfunkel" & "Up Til Now"). This generously filled package focuses on his two best solo LPs: "Breakaway", picking up 6 of the 10 tracks from that outing, and "Watermark", 5 tracks from there. There are 6 tracks pulled from his remaining LPs, which is fine as the remaining releases were uneven at best. There are also three tracks that were not from the original catalog including the excellent "Crying in the Rain", which is a wonderful duet with James Taylor, and "Why Worry" which showed up for the first time on the odd "Up Til Now" compilation, and "Another Lullaby".

The only odd thing is that Garfunkel's first solo LP, "Angel Clare", is not represented at all. It is his most "artistic" (?) album and the contrast with the "poppier" style of the rest of his material could have been a bit much. Still I think I would have at least included "All I Know" and possibly left off "When A Man Loves A Woman", the only questionable inclusion here, culled from his last and weakest effort "Lefty" (which understandably is not even available on CD.)

Again, almost all the essential Garfunkel tracks are here on this excellent collection.
