This compilation features excerpts from some of the greatest sacred works in the literature--including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Missa solemnis, and Verdi's Requiem--all led by Robert Shaw. The selections, from recordings made between 1983 and 1997 by Shaw and various ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, are presented more or less in order of their composition, from Vivaldi's Gloria to Arvo Pärt's Magnificat. Robert Shaw Choruses At Their Best!.......2004-09-20

If Sir Robert were still alive, & breathing, I believe he would be caught-up making music with this awesome, majestic, mystical GLORIA, Sanctus, Hallelujah Masterworks! I lucked-up on this old collection in the few classical CD'S in Best Buy!

At first hearing they sent me back into the 1970's when most of Church Musicians majored in Vivaldi's Gloria, the Sanctus of Bach's B-Minor Mass, the Long, georgeous GLORIA, Missa Solemnis, Beethoven, and incomparable Alleluia by Randall Thompson.

During a visit of Hurricane IVAN'S rushing winds and torrents of rain, I stayed on back roads of Decatur and East Atlanta! Also keeping alert & relaxed listening to Robert Shaw re-inventing his Choral Mystique! In slowly moving traffic of 2++ hours to Fayetteville, I kept alert singing along at 30 mph, wrapped in his quiet heavenly beauty of Koplov's "Heavenly Light!"

That mysteriously spiritual power of glorious choruses provided the same resourceful sounds of his eternal music-making from rehearsals in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Westminster Choir College and Avery Fischer Hall concerts in NYC! (1975-1985)

Only the early 33 1/3 recordings of the Robert Shaw Chorale in his Spirituals and Irish Songs, later Handel's Messiah and Bach B-Minor Mass were forerunners to his awesome listing of repeated Grammy winners, now printed in digital stereo color and sound! If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's Gloria or portions of Handel's Messiah, one cannot help but become enthralled with the recordings of Shaw's interpretations of those works. Although Shaw never followed through on his early-life ambition to be a minister, I still believe he does so and perhaps to a greater extent through his music ministry. One cannot help but feel closer to understanding what heaven is about after having finished listening to this CD. This is well worth buying for it will live up to the english interpretation of its Latin title: Glorious.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

In a sense, First Light reflects its creator's avowed intent to avoid mimicry. Many of the songs are built on a sturdy bed of acoustic guitar, but far from being a modest, homespun effort, the album reflects serious thought, reflection and concerted effort—not to mention serious chops courtesy of Erskine and his band of stellar sidemen. Like Styx and other progressive rock stalwarts, Erskine isn't averse to draping his arrangements with Technicolor orchestral washes, and like James Taylor, he's an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist with a gift for melodic invention. But what pulls these disparate elements together is a controlling intelligence and a wariness of excess that keeps even the sprawling, ambitious numbers firmly under control. Ambitious this is, but it never rambles. You might compare it to prime Steely Dan without the heavy dose of irony.

"I think people in these times are looking to be reassured," Erskine reflects. "They're looking for something to believe in—something more than themselves. Artists can provide that connection." "It's distressing to me what a product music has become; it's no longer enough to be a musician, you have be an act, and dance and have fireworks and spotlights."

Obviously, choreography is not the emphasis here, but the reference to spotlights brings up an intriguing point. A longtime amateur astronomer, Erskine peppers the album with repeated references to the human experience, often set against the milieu of astronomy and observation of the universe.

"Yes, that's true," Erskine agrees with a grin. "My songwriting explores the relationship between humanity and the infinity underneath. As we go about our daily lives, too often we're unaware of how our existence fits into the scheme of things. Plus," he adds, "it makes problems seem less large if we can think of the bigger picture."

Uplifting... Grows on You.... A Great Album............2003-04-20

This "coming of age" CD is quite an epic work. Take some Moody Blues, Steely Dan and a dash of Kurt Elling and you have the progressive rock raconteur Tim Erskine. There is some first class musical talent on this CD from various session vets but most striking to me is the colorful story telling. Yes, this is a theme album. A young man coming to grips with the reality known as adulthood. There are some romantic embellishments along the way but the true romance here is Tim's gift for a great metaphor. This is a cerebral work of passion and as such will challenge the listener to think as much as listen. The author is a truth seeker using simple guitar phrases to lavish orchestrations as highlight for his search for ultimate acceptance. Erskine has allot to say as the diversity of musical genre evident here attests. Underpinning the theme is a positivity and honesty I feel is missing from many musical efforts today. Erskine is not just trying to catch a groove or make a buck, but to share and educate as the spirit of life has illuminated his own psyche. Whether it's a play, novel or CD... Erskine's efforts are sure to spark controversy. For instance, much of the storytelling is highlighted by outer-space fantasy.... so like many, Erskine is looking to the heavens or an all powerful force for comfort and direction. Definitely keep an eye on Erskine's future developments and contributions to see what may evolve, as there is much insight here to spark many imaginations. This is a terrific first effort.

I really liked the album...
My favorite is "Night Sky"...I can't seem to keep my feet from tapping to the beat of the music. There are some nice acoustic guitar sequences that add a unique flavor to the song (and album).
I also liked 'Batman'. Really fun to listen to, but you have to understand that I'm a bit 'rock and roll' at heart...

My daughter loves this cd! We bought this cd to do yoga to but we also sing and dance along with all the songs. It's a great cd to spend some family time together.

I bought this cd for teaching my kids yoga classes - it's got great songs for movement and fun. I also bought it for my 2 year old niece who dances and sings along and just loves it. The songs are about how to teach kids to love and honor themselves and has a great guided meditation!! I LOVE THIS CD!
