English DJs Layo Paskin and Matthew "Bushwacka!" Benjamin--collectively, Layo & Bushwacka!--put London nightclub The End on the map with their unhinged yet seamless mash-ups of house, techno, trance, and nutty samples. As expected, their second record, Night Works, is a richly detailed quilt of dance and trance suites gussied up with snippets of J.J. Cale and Nina Simone, among others. But what really propels Night Works is its weirdly organic feel--weird because we're talking high-fidelity DJing here. And yet the ride is so smooth it's as if the pair were pushing paint around a canvas, rather than painstakingly building a sonic structure out of errant parts. Dance music bearing fingerprints is more rare than enthusiasts might like to admit, but just a few songs into Night Music, a distinct personality emerges. "We Meet at Last" begins with a light shower of synth over a simple kick-drum beat before hurtling shoulders-first into a spastic fit of chanted "da-das" and croaking strings. Meanwhile, "Love Story" starts off like a sci-fi soundtrack before melting into a keyboard-driven corker that gains momentum from layers of snappy drums and gurgling sound effects. Destined to flip the switch at parties worldwide. --Kim Hughes

Album Description

In a year that's seen an unusual abundance of high quality dance LP releases, it says something that Layo & Bushwacka!'s 'Night Works' still stands head & shoulders above most of 2002's releases. The dance veteran duo have for the past half a decade or so championed the minimalist groove of tech house & tech funk. Fitting in with the tech community's innate suspicion of commerciality, 'Night Works' is in some respects a deliberately un-commercial album. Plucked guitar motifs figure strongly in the album, producing a mix-and-match sound that updates DJ Shadow's early 90s innovations with rather more panache than the innovator has managed himself. Definitely in the hat for album of the year. Digipak. XL Recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Funk.......2006-02-06

This CD is the heezy! I had several Bushwacka releases on vinyl but never a full album until this little gem. This is some very intellegent breaks with a very dark feel to it. Shining throught sets it off and it never looks back from there. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Night WOrks.......2005-06-02

Night Works is unconventional and therefore definetely ahead of its time. Its hard to figure out how Lao and mathew came up wiht something like that.
Has anyone heard Borge Sex by Joe Satriani (and other satriani songs from the same album)? Thats would be my guess as to what the influence on this album were.

2 out of 5 stars only 1/2 good songs.......2004-09-07

I mainly got it 'cos of "let the good times roll" thinking the rest of the album has simliar stuff. But the rest is more boring and drags on. Too many dull loops and songs that don't go anywhere. It'd make nice background music though.

5 out of 5 stars Drifting on the Electronic Highway.......2003-05-07

Layo & Bushwacka, first heard of by name only, till I got the chance to online listen to a live-set. Superb... These two guys are innovative in a sense rarely found. Most of the time, producers keep milking the same cow. None of that here. NightWorks keeps surprising, being accessible but also deep and stimulating to undergo.

This disc brings summer from the speakers, offers fun and warmth, uptempo and relaxing. L&B use groovy, indeep basslines with light drum+bass, congas and a high flying melody.

In order to get a good picture of the album, listen to "Let the good times roll". Okay, it's the best, but the rest is though diverse, the same level.. Fantastic..

I scale L&B in the same order as Sasha, for both go beyond constructed boundaries. If you like Sasha, LTJ Bukem, Thievery Corporation, Morcheeba, David Holmes or Orbital: get this one..

It's a keeper you won't regret, nor bore. Let the good times roll!!

5 out of 5 stars WHY ARE THE BEST CDS ALWAYS SO DAWG-GONE SHORT????.......2003-05-07

... "Night Works" in a word is undescribable! It takes you one way and suddenly veers you another, from chillout to organic to funk to jazz to blues to techno to scatting to scratching to mixing to sampling, this CD has it all--even the segues are cool...and boy, do I regret not buying this disc sooner!! Somebody, please slap me!! The songs flow and are well produced and arranged...I never hit the skip button once because "Night Works" left me craving more and more and more!! This CD is full of surprises and each time you hear it, you'll hear something different! Layo and Bushwacka are truly underrated artists in the field of music, and have definitely established their own unique sound. I place them up there with other great dynamic duos such as Kruder and Dorfmeister, Dzhian and Kamien and 45 Dip! A definite must-have!! But somebody answer me this? Why are the Best CDs always so dawg-gone short???

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-01-12

If you are into this type of thing then you will absolutely LOVE it.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Matrix Tribute.......2005-12-13

Animatrix - The Album opens very strongly with the scintillating, mellowing, "Who Am I?," "Big Wednesday," and "Blind Tiger." The electronic arrangements fit very well with the psychological mood of the world of the Matrix. Unfortunately, tracks four through twelve are not as strong. Tracks eleven and twelve include music and dialouge from the original film score: but it is just the same three or four lines by Neo and Morpheus repeated over and over. In Track eleven, "Red Pill, Blue Pill," the only spoken words are "take the red pill; take the blue pill" over and over, by an unknown voice (not Reeves or Fishburne) and some amateur mixing that sounds like a "do it yourself Party DJ Mixer Kit." If you are at a Rave, I suppose these last two tracks would be right up your alley.

4 out of 5 stars an enigma.......2005-10-28

i've enjoyed most of the soundtracks on the animatrix cd but as i watch the movie i always miss sumthin outta it...does someone out there posses info on where i could get the soundtrack played when the girl goes lookin for her cat in the wiered building and finds them boys playin with the nature of the building...?and then just when the girl picks the feather from its hovering mode..the cat scares a white dove into flight then the music that i'm lookin for begins...if someone out there knows what i'm lookin for...plz page me on erwogera@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-09-08

This CD has some really excellent tracks, some OK ones, and some that make you scratch you head with "what-were-the-artists-thinking" kind of bewilderment. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the track Masters of the Universe (when the Kid is escaping the Agents on his skateboard), amazingly, is omitted. However, the first track (the "credits" music), Supermoves, and Conga Fury are great fun to listen to.
As for the genre itself, Trance seems to me to be the equivalent of classical music for our time. Some is good, some is bad, but it all gives you a sense of free-mind feel, without words or lyrics or pop influences mucking up the experience of the music itself. If that makes any sense...

5 out of 5 stars Somewhere around a 4.7.......2005-08-01

Nope... its not another unenjoyable rap or pop album. What I'm trying to get at is that its so, so sad that electronic music is not popular and deserves to be. Repeatable lovey-dovey pop and false rap is what mostly strikes listeners through the radio. Though I do understand electronic music is meant for mainstream listening and is meant to stay deep underground in the clubs, lets hope to see electronic music favored in the future.

Due to some great electronic tracks left out from the film, I did give the compilation a 4.5, but nonetheless, being a huge electronic/techno fan, is a very well done and not far from a masterpiece.

Most Favored Track:
"Beauty Never Fades"
"Martenot Waves"
"Under The Gun"
"Hands Around My Throat"
"Conga Fury"
& a few from the film that were sadly left out.

Album Description

Layo Paskin and Matthew 'Bushwacka' B are best known for their 2002 hit 'Love Story', a techno anthem named after a seedy Brazilian club. The London DJs are a well-traveled pair and Feels Closer, their third long player, reflects their jet setting lifestyles. Most of the album was recorded in Brooklyn with live jazz musicians (including celebrated Weather Report percussionist Mino Cinelu and a less feted pizza delivery boy they found to be useful with a sax), and their Brazilian love affair is resumed with 'Sunshine In Ipanema', which features the South American superstar Rogerio Flausino. 12 tracks. Olmeto. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oh, What A Feelin'.......2006-12-20

Layo (Paskin) and Bushwacka! (Matthew Benjamin) are one of the tightest DJ duos to hit the dance scene in the past decade. They meld breaks and soothing, artfully-chosen samples with a subliminal ease, creating a body of work with enough skill and diversity to appeal to wide range of house and techno tastes. This, their third album, is no exception. It is a mosaic of digital box pop, opera, electro synth, and funk, all of it built on a bedrock of soul-heavy jazz.

Unlike a lot of albums of this sort, you probably won't be cherry-picking favorites out of the line-up. This CD plays like a night at the club, with thematically unique tracks dove-tailing each other with the grace of an expert dancer slipping from a salsa step to a swing beat.

The most generally appealing segment of the album comes in the first three tracks. "Life2Live" is an unapologetic deep house cover, with veins of throbbing wire, a song that is as grin-inducingly silly as it is danceable (and hardcore clubbers might recognize, in the phantomesque vocals, the voice of Chicago producer, Green Velvet). The second and title track leads in with a shadowy thrum that is lit by incomparable percussive talent by the legendary Mino Cinelu, creating an ambient hunk of sound that is sunny and eerie in equal measures. This is followed without fanfare by "Ride the Train," a clappin', snappin' song inspired by the 80's favorite, "Steppin' Out."

Don't misunderstand. This record isn't what one would call a dance compilation. It's a pastiche of art in sound, and although much of it is groove-worthy, there's more atmosphere than there is dig-down dancing. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially when you have this time-tested duo setting the scene. Slippery scat sensations control the classy sound of "Smith Street" (which features Groove Armada's Tim Hutton on trombone). The downtempo "Sunshine In Ipanema" (what can you say? These guys love them some Brazil) is still lively with addictive maracan hush-shuffles. And "Isn't This A Lovely Day" mixes Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and original instrumentation into something that is both amazing and virtually indescribable. If you can't dance to this song, you can definitely use it as the soundtrack to some mind-blowing sex.

This album doesn't sit still. There are times when the two DJs give us something close to an homage (think Nightmares on Wax divided by Lemon Jelly's Lost Horizons period), and then there are times when they seem to be testing their own limits ("Dr. Teeth" mixes urban graffiti with the brassy echoes of an orchestral hall; "Hang Tough" is a jungle of sound, a damp, ropy tangle of computer keyboards and canyon echoes).

This is hardly your typical house/mix album, so don't come here expecting the Asian Dub Foundation or Fatboy Slim. You won't be able to dance to everything here, but you'll definitely be able to listen to it all, over and over, and with relish.

Depending on whether you ask Jeff Mills or Norman Cook, a dance record may ultimately be rated by either its purity or its sense of play. Judging from their new record, it's pretty obvious that Layo Paskin and Matthew "Bushwacka" B side with Fatboy. One doesn't hear Low Life and think, "What an admirable adherence to the tech-house tradition!" It's more like, "Wow! What a party!" Mr. C's End Sound System stalwarts have produced a record as global and eclectic as their DJ tour work. "Chapter One" sneaks, skulks, and struts its way into "Spooked," in which icy strings sail over the top of a kick drum that sounds like a wet potato chip. The modern percussive maelstroms of "Dead Man Walking" and "Bad Old Good Old Days" segue into smoother house workouts, such as "Deep South" and the title track, only to land back in the land of the drums with the very literal take on the term "tribal" in "Kusekhaya." The closing third of the record dabbles in contemplative breakbeat and even a little sonic weirdness reminiscent of one of Underworld's more ambient pieces. Gorgeous, groovy, inventive--Low Life is all of that. --Bob Michaels
