A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Several Nice Melodies Here for those Who Enjoy 19th Century Song.......2006-04-02
The theme of this album is songs of social consciousness, which means that the compiler was looking for historical relevence, rather than overall good tunes. But there are at least two songs here that any fan of the 19th century popular song must have: "The Song of the Red Man," by Henry Clay Work, and "The Hand that Holds the Bread" by Root. Work's piece is simple, but driving and compelling, like all his best songs. The song by Root is just another fine, rousing melody by this exellent pop composer. Performance-wise, the soloists are a mixed bag, but they are sincere, and the chorus is superb throughout.

The Glory of Man in one woman's voice.......2006-03-20
Mudville ventures into many musical worlds on this CD, they visit rock, jazz, hip-hop, soundscape electronica, blues and soul and the snow-globe souvenir they bring back is from nowhere but their own polyglot island. The first track, "The Hero of the World", sounds like Al Green's diabolical twin, especially as sung with the provocative voice of Marilyn Carino. Carino is the glue here, her interpretations are earnest and striking (kind of like a more absurdist Fiona Apple) and bring a haunting, but substantial depth to the wide-ranging material. My favorites are the aforementioned "Hero", the funky, sexy "Blown" and the ever-unfolding "Pray" (a Bollywood-style remix of this on their website blew me away!). The songs are cool and animated and they linger, working beautifully as an "album" played beginning to end. But it's the voice that grabs you and resonates, it aches and breathes angelic and devilish all at once.
Muscular.......2005-02-25
I really like this music. I'm usually more about hip-hop but I'm really getting into this girl's words! "Poets on Parade" doesn't know it but is a righteous rap. "The Hero of the World" made me listen and sway. Producer Ben Rubin puts it all in a lovely world. I'd like to hear "Blown" remixed with a bit more drive, it could be even sexier. The girl Marilyn Carino sings like the open ocean - check out "Pray" and try not to shiver.
just what I needed.......2004-09-27
The reviewer who described Mudville as "creaminess and grit" had it cold. The songs on this CD are both lyrically beautiful and sonically intriguing, more so with repeated listens. There's really nothing like it. Trip-hoppers will surely relate, but this ain't no fluffy, boring-ass trip-hop. My favorite track is "Othello", a cautionary tale with a dark, syncopated groove. Mudville is intimate, sultry and grown-up, this CD was obviously made by people with a lot of experience playing actual music on real instruments. Check it out.
Glorious Mudville.......2004-06-04
Like some exotic spa bath, "The Glory of Man..." is a stimulating mix of creaminess and grit. Mudville have managed to create a vibe that pulses and throbs with real vitality and a whole lotta sweet soul, thanks to the absolutely sensuous, yet absolutely butch sounds emanating from singer Marilyn Carino. The songs here are full of life. While lyrically a bit impressionistic, they're all about hope and lust and color and a slap in the face to apathy. The sound is a clever mix of samples and live tracks, and the excellence of the musicianship and use of instruments such as standup bass, trumpet and piano makes it sound like a jazz record from some funky future. I was desperately looking for something different and genuinely GOOD. "The Glory of Man..." really turned me on.
Get this CD, there's nothing like it.......2004-05-14
Like all the best music, Mudville takes several listens to really be appreciated. It's definitely downtempo, and wouldn't sound out of place next to a trip-hop band, but it's way more intense and interesting to experience. Its electronic, its jazz and its blues and Marilyn Carino's voice swoops over and into you - great stuff.

Customer Reviews:
Might be Man's best album.......2004-04-29
This album was originally released in 1974 as a double LP set. It contains two sides that were recored in the studio and two sides recorded live.
I think that it is the best Man album (but I must admit that I have only heard half of them). This is in spite of the fact that the star of the group, Deke Leonard, is missing. This is one of the most polished, professional sounding albums Man has done. Even the live jams seem under control. Maybe that is because Deke Leonard is missing.
The main attactions here are the live tracks. The first is an a'capela number done by the "Gwalia Male Choir". It is fun but not essential. From there it goes into a 19 minute version of C'mon. This is the spaciest, most psychodelic version of the song I have heard. The Gwalia Choir does a solo in the middle of the song. The whole thing reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. C'mon is a song that Man does at most of their concerts. They do it significantly differently each time. This is the most laid back version.
The last track is the 21 minute Jam Up, Jelly Tight. This is actually Spunk Rock. This is a really rocking jam. It is also played differently than any other version. It features keyboard and flute solos.
For most of it's history, Man was a guitar driven band. During this brief period, Phil Ryan joined the band, adding keyboards and a new dimension. That and with Deke Leonard's shrill, out of control guitar and vocals missing, this album comes off more polished than others. Don't get me wrong. I really like Deke Leonard's contributions to the band, it just that they can be uneven at times. This CD is one of the few that is uniformly good throughout.
There are two really good studio tracks. Never Say Nups to Napalese is an especially good track. It is almost progressive. The other 4 studio tracks are mediocre. The real reason to get this is for the last two thirds of the CD.
welsh wizards.......2003-01-26
Man turned out a masterpeice here even though their line up was ever changing.Mickey jones is at his brilliant best on aint their fight & nepalese where is guitar work is spine tingling and catchy. a brilliant live version of c/mon betters the original studio cut from a band who preceeded the manics& phonics but never get the recognition they deserve.check out their earlier stuff.Revelation IS THE RIGHT WORD

Really shud be 4 and a half but hey!!.......2002-11-15
A good album plane and simple. A good mix of english style indie/alternative rock. A bit lighter than supergrass and bends era radiohead's soundscapes. And a bit less brash than oasis.Routes in blur.
I thouroughly (spelling!!) recommend this album. To be listened to when chillin in ur bedroom, getting ready to go out
Good stuff
Kings (and Queen) of Portland Pop.......2000-10-20
Portlanders Man Of The Year (aka MOTY) used to be known as Lolly until some sassy little English girl got successful with the same moniker and The Oregon Lolly had to think of a new name. 'The Future Is Not Now' is the long-awaited debut album from these 4 cheeky Portlanders and exceeds even our expectations here at Loveless Records HQ. Beautifully layered guitars awash with keyboards and clever-catchy vocal games make this the most easily accessible and pure pop fun release on the roster thus far: check a sample here or at lovelessrecords.com and I think you'll be swayed by the MOTY way...think Dandy Warhols, Blur....

Three years after the mean-spirited Laughter & Lust proved he'd lost all taste for the pop life, Jackson grows up gracefully by adding lyrics to the wide-screen compositions that have been his strength since a dazzling "After Midnight" turned up on Hal Willner's tribute to Thelonious Monk. Here guest vocalist Taylor Carpenter turns in a strong performance, while "Lullaby" and "The Man Who Wrote Danny Boy" are art songs of invention and beauty. In this context, his four instrumental Nocturnes are breathtaking. Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
I love this one..........2006-02-15
I've enjoyed Joe Jackson's music for years and have followed along through the myriad of style changes and maturing of his music. It's a shame he gets lumped in with "those new wave guys" when really he bears little resemblance to the groups of the late 70's early 80's who stayed in those niches. I wish this album - along with Heaven & Hell, his diverse song cycle on the seven deadly sins - were linked into his full "pop" catalog instead of in the classical section where, frankly, the music won't find many new ears amongst the wider audience and precious few adventurous ears amongst the classical audience willing to check it out. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!
Haunting and Lyrical, but not for all tastes.......2000-06-01
Music for the dark night of the soul. The kind of thing that makes you want to call the artist and ask, "My God-- are you all right? " Some of this is beautiful, some of it is darkly touching, and every time I hear the first bars of "Flying" ("the older I get, the more stupid I feel") I can't help but laugh. Mortality, age, hope, creation-- this is a cd for grownups, and for people who don't mind music that is impossible to pigeonhole by genre. It's not something that I listen to often, but I still consider it one of the essentials in my collection.
Different for Joe.......1999-09-12
I like to think of myself as pretty open-minded, and willing to follow Joe most anywhere he would go musically, but I was rather disappointed in this. Emphasis is on his slower, more introspective side. No more snotty tirades--he's growing, OK, but a lot of this music I think is pretty, but not terribly memorable. I like "Ever After" and "Danny Boy"; the rest is very slick stuff with not much substance. The production is very clean to the point of antiseptic, electric keyboards and synthesized strings all about. Background music for sure. I was much more impressed with "Heaven and Hell", his next project, I believe--good ideas, good songs, novel arrangements.
Mesmerizing music for the night.......1999-04-16
Night Music haunts me every time I listen to it. Jackson has crafted a masterpiece that needs to be experienced with the lights out. An elegaic mood is created by his songs. Enjoy!!!!
Nothing Better After Midnight.......1998-09-16
One of the principal reasons I am a Joe Jackson fan is that he seems constantly to recreate himself and to explore new musical vistas, teaching me something along the way about jazz, classical, etc. He does it again on this album, a mood piece if there ever was one: best listened to between midnight and sunrise. The songs are perfectly crafted and rendered and most of them linger in my mind for days.
