5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-29

I remember my father listening to these songs way back in the late 70s. After hearing them over and over, I got to like them too. Whenever I hear them on the radio now, it always brings good memories. My favorites "Easy," "you bring me up" and "Sail On." These songs are classics. Excellent melodies and vocals.

5 out of 5 stars THE MILLENNIUM COLLESTION THE BEST OF THE COMMODORES.......2006-09-01

I WAS LOOKING FOR THE SONG OH NO AND I FINALY FOUND IT ON THIS CD. I CAN`T WAIT TO GET IT.THIS CD BRINGS ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID.

4 out of 5 stars Lady, They Were Brought Up .......2006-03-06

There are just so many times when it comes to making a good hits package, they can be either good or bad, but the cases with the 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection has been either a considered hit or miss when it comes to showcasing a artist definitively. That has been the case with so many acts like Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart and classic Motown legends like Diana Ross and The Temptations. For The Commodores, the group hasn't been around in years, but there is always the possibility of finding a good hits package all theirs, following the R&B legends from Alabama.

The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenuim Collection is a simple and convient reflection behind one of the most unique R&B groups of the 70's and 80's. The collection does a really good job at highlighting Lionel Richie and company. The songs here are arguably as simple and definitive as you could expect. The compilation includes some great party anthems like Brick House and Machine Gun, as well as classic ballads like their tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson on Nightshift, Sweet Love to even simple ballads like Three Times A Lady and Easy. While there are a lot of great tracks here, there are a couple of disadvantages to the record. One of them is that the album overhadows tracks like the Funk track Girl, I Think The World About You and Zoom. Not only that, but the tracks on the collection weren't remastered as well as well as other collections like the 1997 Ultimate Collection of The Commodores.

Despite a few flaws, The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection is a very simple and straight forward reflection of one of the best 70's groups of all time. This is a very inexpensive, but mostly well-thought out reflection of Lionel Richie & Company. If you are on a budget and really want to get your groove on, I absolutely suggest this great album.

5 out of 5 stars More "Lionel Richie" than "Commodores" but..........2005-12-29

This 20th Century Masters is the best I've heard in the whole "20th century" series, but doesn't do too good a job at spanning the Commodores lifespan. Before Lionel Richie became a household name, The Commodores were mostly funk, as can be seen in "Brick House," the group's biggest hit, but beyond that song, the disc doesn't cover that side of the group very well at all.
But, I still give the compilation a perfect 5 star rating, because even though it covers a pretty narrow portion of the band, it covers the BEST portion. Lionel's ballads aren't nearly at the same level of genius as some of Marvin Gaye's or Stevie Wonder's greatest work, but I think they're just as enjoyable. Songs like "Sail On" and "Just To Be Close To You" will simply never get old.
I absolutely love this CD, it's one of the most played in my collection, but if you're looking for a true Commodores overview, you might want to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But The Hits.......2004-04-23

A Good Deal for 5.99 at Costco! Has every major hit of the commodores career!

5 out of 5 stars masters of classical music.......2007-03-26

A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.

5 out of 5 stars A good basic collection.......2006-11-10

With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18

This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.

5 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

5 out of 5 stars Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Programmed to Perfection!!.......2007-05-13

Satoshi Tomiie blows me away again with his superbly mixed compilation album. His attention to detail and ear for music give way to a set of forward-thinking house music that defies the boundaries of any particular genre. Tech-funk and soulful melodies contribute to the joy I feel when I listen to this album. His impeccable timing and engineering skills make the set flow "just right." He beat-mixes the songs in key for extended periods of time, which really adds a subtle element of flawlessness to the journey he creates through his set. He adjusts the dynamics just right to master a normally flat-sounding track into an enhanced 3D soundscape! Of course, his choice in content is the foundation for the album's greatness (in my opinion). My favorite track is Jim Rivers "I Go Deep." When I listen to this track, I feel like I am having a deep, spiritual (personal) experience with my inner self. I actually cried as I was driving home late one night as this track was mixed in. Overall, I have a passion for progressive house music that is funky and has soul. This definitely fits the bill! My mixes are free podcasts that I upload every month and can be heard at [...]. Hope you enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Ellegant Music.......2007-05-12

The music that this melodic cd contains it's very ellegant and unique, without loosing the ELECTRO style, because as we all know, electro it's changing the world of electronic music and it's the genre all people want to hear, so I must say A+.

5 out of 5 stars Fancy a game of chess?.......2007-03-22

The last several installments of Renaissance's "Master's Series" have shown a remarkable trend in "progressive" styles; Dave Seaman's electro-house production took long-time fans by surprise, and Sandy Rivera's Renaissance debut resembled Sharam's vocal-house that, when released by Renaissance, seems to come out of left field. Satoshi Tomiie continues forging the treacherous path towards dance music of the future with what is perhaps the most complex and engaging "Masters" release since Hernan Cattaneo's Volume 2; from the very beginning, Satoshi is dropping hints that this is no ordinary progressive mix and is a far cry from a return to the darker tribal trance that made NuBreed 006 the biggest success of his recent career. Satoshi utilizes instead a smooth, sensual and cerebral progression of excellent tracks that is quite unlike anything I have heard before - both from Satoshi himself and the EDM community as an entity.

On the first disc, Satoshi displays the type of mechanical precision found in car assembly lines; the product, however, is far less stable; what this really means is that the style is less predictable and therefore more exciting. "Farra" begins very slowly with xylophonic chords - giving the introduction to this disc a spacious atmosphere. As a result I always find myself in a complacent headspace that is soon shattered as the music unfolds. The feather-light sounds that weave over and under the melody effortlessly capture and calm the ear - until, that is, a wickedly cool and funky bass-driven groove gives "Air Moves" and "Don't Push It" the collective momentum needed to propel the first mix closer to its peak. The cool and delicate atmospheric consistency never gives way to anything too overpowering. Interrupting (and it is hardly a rude one!) the ambience is "Darkroomboot" by Opus Ink, an alias representing the collaborative efforts of Satoshi himself with the rapidly-rising European duo Audiofly. The tempo quickens, the melody gains definition, and the rest of the album explodes with a restrained energy that I found to be decadently suitable for cocktails and good conversation prior to entering thunderous dance floors. Arguably the sickest beat on the first mix appears in "So That's What Happens", which is surrounded by electro-robotic harmony. The beat is momentarily interrupted by silence, save the churning of electric turbines; it returns, seconds later, with the same latent ferocity as before. The timbre of DJ Yellow & King Britt's "Alienation 3/Beyond the Forest" reflects the track title so well. Haunting synths cascade over a cooler and slower foundation and remind me of the feeling one would experience if one were to gaze upwards in the center of an unknown forest, touched simultaneously by fear and spiritual awe. And how fitting it is that Jim Rivers' "I Go Deep" follows! Its deep and eclectic rhythm flows like water in a brook, slowly removing one's head from the forest and placing it, gently, back into the pre-club environment. "Praise" and "Aura" end the first disc with an upbeat, mid-tempo jazziness that is quite enjoyable.

Satoshi breaks disc two down immediately, hinting at the raw energy-to-come with the uniquely staccato "chopstick" percussion of Thugf*cker's "Ahh", later dropping into a hard bass drum. I will admit that I'm not crazy about the admittedly creepy male spoken-word vocals in "I Need", but they are quickly and quietly overlooked as the cowbell-driven pace of Matt O'Brien's increasingly popular "Serotone" kick in neatly alongside the first identifiably "dark" grooves of any track mixed on either disc. It would be wise to heed the title "Lose Control", because from this point onwards the aural journey becomes bumpier, wilder and more "Satoshi" than has been shown on the album thus far. I felt that the upbeat and bouncy atmosphere shoots like an arrow straight through the heart of the second disc. The next several tracks continue the cerebral-dance theme, and "Moods" drops a particularly body-moving rhythm that warrants mention. The peak of disc two is reached with a great pairing of tracks by Satoshi; in this case, D'Julz's "Flick It" (Original Mix) and Guy Gerber & Patrik K's "Sleeping in the Bass Box". I think the combination works perfectly; the smooth and respectable build up of "Flick It"s electro-energy erupts with a mean bass line that drives the melody as much as acting as a segue between "Flick It" and "Sleeping in the Bass Box". Take note of the latter title, because that's precisely the impression this track left me feeling I'd experienced. "Cropduster" and "Driven" polish off this fine piece of work, and end disc two with a far better fade-out than was given on disc one, where "Aura" seems to arbitrarily disappear.

The complexity of Satoshi Tomiie's latest (and, dare I say, greatest?) achievement is hard to swallow at first. Only after four sessions of listening to both discs straight through was I able to realize the insight Satoshi projects. I would have to say that this album is tied for my favorite amongst the "Masters" series with Cattaneo's Part 5. Satoshi Tomiie manages to create the most outstanding aural chess match I have ever heard - and although it is Satoshi who moves the pieces, it is the listener who ultimately wins the match.

5 out of 5 stars Way to Go........2006-03-22

5 out of 5 stars Quo Vadis, Baby? .......2006-01-03

OK.
In order to understand how much a few reviews here knew about the Village People, and about this specific collection, and thus how much reliable a few of them they can be to craft your own guesswork and decide whether to purchase this cd or not, you may want to consider that some of these reviews complain that "Go West" is a track missing from the compilation.

Well, it is not. It is only missing (arguably overlooked) by the Amazon list of tracks. But it is NOT missing from the actual, physical disk.

Isn't it cute, to review a cd you didn't even purchase, in order to suggest whether the others should or shouldn't purchase it?

Now, it happens I have purchased the cd indeed. So I do know "Go West" does is in it.
And I am here to say: you should buy this cd too. Now, baby.

Then, of course, many of these reviews are concerned with labeling the Village People as "homosexual" or as "a gay group". That's not a new one. The New Yorker was busy a few months ago assessing whether Gogol was gay, rather than one of the greatest Russian writers ever. Many critics were busy for decades trying to understand whether Shakespeare was gay - unsuccessfully busy, by the way. Many guys tried to claim Ernest Hemingway was gay - because also if you are not, who told you you could not be such all the same, very very very very secretly? Isn't it?

I must say that if the Village People were gay, that's fine to me: because I am not, so I just couldn't care less about what they preferred sexually. In order to listen to their music, I am not required to share more than their music, and to judge them only after that.
Because when I purchase a cd, I want to listen to the music, not to the gossip. And when I read a book, like a Gogol title, I want to cultivate my spirit, and learn how to fly at a higher level, not how to sink in the undergloom of the (very) small talk.

The Village People didn't become famous insofar as gays. They did inasfar as they produced some of the best disco music ever. That's the reason. Because it is not enough to have some specific sexual preference, in order to be famous. Or just everybody could become very famous very fast and very cheaply.

Now, disco music IS silly music. It WANTS, it MEANS to be silly. It is in the fact it means to be silly, that all its value resides. If it would have meant to be serious, it would have become ridiculous. The Village People does not MEAN to be the Pink Floyd! It never meant to be the Dire Straits!
Its purpose wasn't of being esoteric or mysterious. It sounds silly, meaning to be it; it sounds FUN, meaning to BE fun. Just fun. Plain fun. Obnoxious fun, if you prefer. But fun.

Disco music wants to be an hymn to the joy of being alive together. It wants to suggest incarnated fleshes that none the less dance together in the valley of death and in the wilderness. It wants to deliver the idea of joy. It wants to speak of the Homo Ludens by Huizinga (search Amazon books, to know more about this name...).
Disco Music wants to be the apotheosis of a soul that decided that for a moment, maybe even for a few minutes, it is possible, maybe it's even worth while, being happy. Completely, absolutely, entirely happy. A thing they do not want you to be, you know. No more harrowing dilemmas; no more death; no more wounds; with the twilight of the idols behind your shoulders, you may even decide to smile for a second before this unjust earth.

When it comes to express this feeling, all the saints marchin' in, all the living souls dancing together, the Village People produced some of the best pieces ever. Simply.

YMCA needs no introduction. You listen to it, and it justifies itself.
Forget serious music for a moment. And you will enjoy YMCA in all its glory, like an exploding JS Bach fugue, like a Beethoven climax, like a dazzling set of fireworks, like the very same meaning Wolfgang Mozart at times voiced. And what's wrong, if this round it's expressed in a simpler tone?
Once over with this cd, you're still on time to go back to the old bitterness.

But once in your life you ought to listen to what the Disco truly meant, to its message; and then you need this cd, you need the Village People. And when you shall have understood the meaning of their message, you would not care a damn it any longer about whether they were gay or not. They were the Village People, and the made some of the best disco ever. And this is why you, me, and many others still listen to them today. They had something to say. Yes, they did.

Occasionally, men and women can be absolutely happy, with no drama, with a serene gaze. Occasionally.

In those occasions, your soundtrack is "YMCA" - or "San Francisco" by the Village People. At full volume, and with earphones (if at home). And forget all the rest.

"Macho Man", "In The Navy": if you do not know how to smile, you won't like them. But the day you may decide it is a good day for smiling, you may truly regret not to have got at least one copy of the Village People's disco music in your shelves.
So get it, also if today you're not happy.
For at times, also the sun rises.
At times, of course. But the Village People are for THOSE times exactly, and in THOSE times ONLY they can be understood.

1 out of 5 stars the worst band ever?.......2005-01-24

There were good things about the 70's, sure. Those were Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and Black Sabbath. Then there were many BAD things about the 70's. Those would be Cher, every Zeppelin wannabe, and nearly all disco. Punk rock and metal proved to be the darwinian victors, passing on their genes in the process of musical evolution. The losers would not survive the power of punk rock and metal. The ultimate loser band of the 70's is that unholy combination of disco and overt homosexuality, The Village People. This band stinks so bad I can't really even do it justice. I'm willing to bet that even plenty of those people who have "alternative lifestyles" hate this band. It just sucks so bad. What kind of loser would go to a concert by this group?! Who would conceivably pay actual money for this?! After Kurt Cobain and NIRVANA this stuff just sucked even more than it had already sucked. God this is AWFUL. Please, if you have to listen to disco, do the right thing and listen to the BeeGee's or something. Meanwhile, I'll be listening to Led Zep 4.

It's hard to say when disco died. It was killed by superior music along with competition from its much superior musical mutation/variant, techno. So that, even though punk had tried for years to kill disco, it was TECHNO that truly put the last nail in the coffin.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection - But Missing "Go West".......2004-04-16

If the Casablanca record label was the Monarchy of the Disco Nation, The Village People were their finest ambassadors. More than any of the prefabricated disco machines that the decade produced, it is the VP's cavity provoking bubble-gum dance records that made strobe lights and disco balls accessible and acceptable to party people of all stripes. Add in the undeniable fact that the innuendo laden singles and their stereotyped get-ups made gay subculture visible and you can actually add the term "culturally significant" to the Village People's list of accomplishments.

But all that pales when placed next to the vibrancy of this brief but solid collection of 10 singles. Like all of the best radio confectionary creampuffs, the songs here convey a kooky innocence (the Navy had to let in on the joke before they backed off their decision to use "In The Navy" as a recruitment jingle) that remains timeless. And in the post-AIDS decades, the more obvious 70's call to the disenfranchised like "San Francisco" and "In Hollywood" are even poignant.

Deny it if you dare, but secretly you know this stuff is great. Just see if your limbs don't start contorting into the alphabet next time "YMCA" gets played on some football arena PA or at your next company party. I double dog dare ya.

PS: You may want to get the version of this from the Casablaca/Mercury release dated 1998. That CD contains "Go West" and drops the 12 mix of "YMCA."

5 out of 5 stars Kings of the Mid-Eighties House Party!!.......2007-03-06

If you were a rich kid in the mid-eighties, you wore Lacoste "alligator" shirts and listened to Prince. If you were a scrappy underdog from "the wrong side of the tracks" (like me), you wore a polo shirt from K-Mart (with a little slug on the front pocket) and listened to Ready For the World. I was their biggest fan -- and yes -- I was the only white guy in my junior high with a Jheri Curl. Some kids called it a "scary curl" -- but I didn't care. I wanted to be like Ready for the World, whose anthems and ballads touched the peeps so deeply. Y'all ready to feel it? To get freaky-nasty? Let's break it down:

1. Ceramic Girl (Extended Mix) -- A variation of the climactic big hits (below); Oh Sheila and Digital Display. When people get tired of those two, play Ceramic Girl.
2. Slide Over -- A slow jam that will win people over to love. You can feel the sincerity.
3. Oh Sheila -- Widely considered a plea to get Prince protege Sheila E into the Ready camp. Prince had Sheila E, Sheena Easton, Vanity, and Appolonia in his stable about that time. Ready for the World had a woman who once met Lisa Bonet at a Chuck E. Cheese party. Ready's courtship of Sheila E in order to get some "sex cred" (and some sex) was a gallant effort. I respect that. GREAT song.
4. Mary Goes 'Round (Single Version) -- Prince *wishes* he had thought up the title's single entendre.
5. Gently -- A *very* classy way to describe that sublime moment when you hear, "Go to second! Go to second!"
6. Digital Display (Radio Edit) -- The singer repeats "36, 24, 36, " and wants to "play with" a woman's "digital display." When you're in junior high, you wish all women would be busty robots! And this song nails that precious emotion.
7. Tonight -- If you you played this slow jam while you drove a babe to Safeway for a pink champale run, by the time you got back to the party she'd be all yours.
8. Long Time Coming (Single Version) -- The lyrics hint at innuendo. Actually, the lyrics just come out and say it - straight up!
9. Deep Inside Your Love -- I've studied this song like the Zapruder film, and I'm still not sure what it's about. Sounds good though.
10. My Girly (Single Version) -- Sounds a lot like Keith Sweat's "I Want Her" ("I wanna do it like this, do it like that"). But Ready for the World puts a clever twist on the song, so it has more of a "I wanna do it like THAT, do it like THIS" sound. Nice.
11. Straight Down To Business (Single Remix Version) -- A sly metaphor for doin' the do, sung in a way that makes Bobby Brown seem like Bryant Gumbel.
12. Can He Do It (Like This, Can He Do It Like That) (Extended Mix) -- Can anyone *really* do it like Ready for the World? I think not.
13. Whose Is It? (Chocolate Mix) -- Creamy, rich, tast-a, oooo yeeeah.
14. Love You Down -- May be responsible for the most slow dance hook-ups in the history of song. Also responsible for the most ruined blouses because of Jheri Curl juice smudges. (Especially on those 80's style blouses with shoulder pads!)

Let's face it: If a guy on a New York City street corner sold you a cd of Prince for pennies on the dollar, and it turned out to be Ready for the World, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (Ready for the World are *not* the Sunshine Hydrox cookie to Prince's fancy Oreo, as the rich kids at my junior high used to say!) In fact, the next time Prince has a greatest hits album, at least three of the above songs should be on it. Seriously, I'd pay $15 just for "Oh Sheila" and "Digital Display," and their other songs are some of the best of an era... or anytime.

3 out of 5 stars ready for the world.......2006-08-05

the cd case was cracked and had some scratches on the cd itself but it played fine

5 out of 5 stars Now This Is A Compilation!.......2006-07-14

Universal's "MILLENNIUM COLLECTION" series are usually skimpy on the song selection and the time length. However, this Ready For The World compilation is a glowing exception. Clocking in at over 73 minutes, this 14-song set contains all the hits in either lengthy 12" versions ("Ceramic Girl"), full-length album versions ("Love You Down") or well-mixed radio edits ("Can He Love You Like This").

READY FOR THE WORLD's music is Prince-lite with the truly unique vocals of Melvin Riley, who represented whiny soulful singers four years before Keith Sweat stepped up to the plate. The band may have bitten off of someone else's style, but at least this talented act was able to add their own stamp to it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of RFTW Hits.......2005-06-29

This is a must have CD for anyone who enjoyed Ready for the World's 80s hits. As someone who owned RFTWs tapes (yes...back in the day when you bought either LPs or tapes!), I was very happy to come across this greatest hits collection. It really does have all the RFTW songs that you could possibly want.

5 out of 5 stars I love Ready for the World!! But there will always be haters.......2005-01-04

I have always been a fan of Ready for the World from the start. Every song was a hit for me. My favorite was "love you down, Whose is it, tonight and so many more." I just hate to hear haters like the review before me of Mike Patterson. There are several artist that may sound like someone else or have similar lyrics.....but in the music business it comes down to who gets the break and who doesn't. Well, I have never heard of Mike Patterson and probably never will. Ready for the World had their fame and they could be back you never know. JUST QUIT HATING.........Lay back and enjoy the music - cause you know its good.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2005-02-15

I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-08-17

I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Funky album by some fine looking ladies back then! .......2006-07-25

I still have this CD! They did a good job combining the best songs from the Mary Jane Girls' only 2 albums and 1986's Walk Like a Man. I go to some dances a lot and All Night Long is still a popular request for the dancers on the floor! Rick James knew how he wanted this group to sound with these dynamic funky numbers, especially 1983's Candy Man, In My House (which I heard in New Jersey in summer '85), Wild and Crazy Love (which I heard in Georgia in summer '85), Boys, I Betcha and many others. Wild and Crazy has a strong energy the first few minutes, but it's that funky instrumental section that goes for 1:57 before the final chorus! You have to get ready for that part! One of Rick's finest instrumentals outside of his own albums, proving he was a true musician in his own right! Each of the ladies had their own personality, the wild one with longer hair, the lead singer with the braids, the more conservative one and the blonde one with the leather/dominatrix image. This group has had a strong shelf life and their music is still played today in some places and at parties. If you missed out on them in the '80s, now is your time to purchase this fabulous compilation where these women expressed themselves in a presentable but yet sexy image!

5 out of 5 stars All Night Long In 1983.......2006-06-15

I was born in 1983, and 22 years later I will proudly say that "Candy Man" is still off the hook! Back in the 80's, R&B music was real and original, fresh and hip. Unlike many of today's singers, they actually had talent. Some might say that these girls were mere sexual fluff under the influence of Rick James, but I beg to differ. "All Night Long" and "Meeting In The Ladies Room" are fantastic, but "Candy Man" will get me on the dance floor every time!!!

4 out of 5 stars Relive The Eighties in Style!.......2004-03-13

If you remember Vanity 6, Appolonia ( From Purple Rain ), The Jets and Stacy Lattisaw you should remember the Mary Jane Girls, the group brought to the world by funk master Rick James. Just like Rick these girls were fashionable, bold and extremely talented. The best songs on this album are " All Night Long ", ( if you don't know this song you must be living in a box ), and " Candy Man ". Other big hits include " In My House " and " Walk Like A Man ". The Mary Jane girls may not have stayed around long but their music lives on. Some see them as masters of soul. Other see them as fluff music but no matter what you think of the Mary Jane girls, they helped defined an era built on sexuality and female independence.

3 out of 5 stars Memories Galore!!.......2004-03-02

Awww, snap. I just picked this up and "CandyMan" is slamming right now! Brings back fond memories of my youth. "All Night Long", "In My House", "Boys" - this CD is worth having if you were a MJG fan back in the day.

5 out of 5 stars a Must.......2001-10-11

The Mary Jane Girls did more with Two ALbums than Many do with 10 times more.Together with the Funk Mind&Groove of Rick James they Created many Classic Jams that have since been Sampled,Looped&Re-Made so much."In My House" still Blasts Loudly here.that Jam is Timeless."All Night Long" has Been Sampled&Re-Played a ton as well&It still Bumps.can't get enough of these Jams.they truly captured the time.enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Skimpy Collection.......2007-02-03

Although all of these tracks are very good, there are many Grace Jones compilations that are more comprehensive. La Vie En Rose is the only track from her 1970s disco trilogy, from the debut album Portfolio. The albums Fame and Muse are not represented at all.

The other songs are from the 1980s albums Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Living My Life. Brilliant albums like Bulletproof Heart and Inside Story are completely ignored although they contain some of her most melodious and memorable songs like Amado Mio, Someone To Love, I'm Not Perfect and Inside Story.

As regards the other compilations, I recommend The Collection or The Grace Jones Story and for Grace Jones completists, The Ultimate Collection, a 3-disc set. Having said that, this Millennium Collection includes great songs like the awesome Warm Leatherette, the evocative Walking In The Rain, the risque Pull Up To The Bumper, the charming Libertango and the rhythmically innovative My Jamaican Guy. It showcases only a very small part of the genius of this remarkable artist.

2 out of 5 stars Grace Jones - sanitized and bubblewrapped.......2005-11-14

The titles included in this CD are indeed a good representation of Grace Jones's work. The 'remastering', however, is not.

Every single track on this compilation has been reworked to dull down Grace's raw, edgy power. It's as though a roomful of suit-and-tie record executives lifted Grace's vocals and laid them across Lawrence Welk arrangements, the result being that everything that makes Grace Jones blow your mind has been comfortably pasteurized for the coffeetable chitchat set.

God forbid Grace should make anyone uncomfortable, or challenge their perceptions in any way. No, let's just turn down the volume and put a nice, safe audio bow on her.

Save your money, buy the original recordings, and pull up to the bumper, baby.

5 out of 5 stars GRACE JONES PERSONIFIES ETHNIC BEAUTY LIKE LAURYN HILL & ERYKAH BADU "I LOVE THEM"!!!!.......2005-06-29

GRACE JONES' & SADES' MUSIC IS SENSUAL... YOU CAN DANCE OR MAKE LOVE 2 THEIR MUSIC!! THEY MUST BE ON CRACK IF GRACES' MUSIC IS WEAK, HER PRESENCE & HER VOICE IS STRONG!!... SHE DEMANDS THE LISTENERS' "ATTENTION"! ON ALBUM COVERS OR ON SCREEN SHE DISPLAYS THAT IT'S COOL AT THE SAME TIME SEXXY 4 A FEMALE 2 BE "BOISTEROUS"! SHE MAY COME OF 2 SOME AS "scary" BECAUSE SHE'S MYSTERIOUS, BUT GRACE IS A "SEX-SYMBOL"!!

GRACE REPRESENTS "BEAUTY" SHE DOESN'T HAVE 2 BE "bleached-blonde" LIKE THAT LEAD SINGING CHICK FROM destinys' child!!!! SEEING & HEARING GRACE BRINGS BACK THE SAYING "THE BLACKER THE BERRY, THE SWEETER THE JUICE"! *(THAT'S 4 DAMN SURE)* GRACE JONES HAS PAID HER DUES DECADES AGO... SO IT'S LONG OVER DUED 4 HER 2 GET "HER RESPECT"!

GRACES' MUSIC IS DEFINENTLY "INFLUENCIAL" BECAUSE OTHER MUSICIANS HAS SAMPLED HER SONGS... SUCH AS LL COOL Js' "Doing it Wild" WITH GRACES' "MY JAMAICAN GUY" & SHYNES' "Bonnie & Shyne" WITH "LA VIE EN ROSE"! GRACE PRODUCE THOSE SONGS PROBABLY BEFORE HALF OF THE WORLD WAS CONCEIVED & THEY'RE STILL HITS TODAY!!!!
***WELL IF YOU DON'T HAVE GRACE JONES' COLLECTION THEN BUY A COPY A S A P!!!!***

3 out of 5 stars Millenium Series is weak.......2005-04-08

BUT this one is relatively OK. Still, If you like Grace at all, "Island Life" Gives a more rounded portrait, with early disco tracks and also "Slave to the Rhythm." (Don't get both--too much overlap.)
I personally think that "Private Life: Compass Point Sessions" is a great deal--$15.00 for two CDs of the reggae influenced material. If you like the mood of those tracks, it's worth it.
"Nightclubbing" is also a great place to start. In my opinion, one cannot go wrong with that album, "Warm Leatherette," or "Living My Life"--all solid albums.

4 out of 5 stars Free-Line B*, Soda Drinkin' Man, A Walking Disaster..........2004-10-12

...Demolition (Wo)man.

Get it for that cut alone. The decadently droning electrosynth, the whip and tickle whiplash percussions, the 80's rock punk guitars...cool. Get it if only to hear Gracie's S&M Dietriching about drawing folks to her like a moth to a flame and 'you kept on coming, you should have ran...' on that cut. Deliciously wicked. Blast that one, Walkin' In the Rain and WARM!...Leatherete.

Missing from the overall mix: The great "Pars" and "I'm not
