Beethoven: The 9 Incomplete Symphonies..........2007-03-11

I purchased the Szell-directed Beethoven Nine Symphonies because I had listened to them while in college years ago. At that time, they were recorded on 33.3 long-playing vinyl and over the years, deteriorated. Being very familiar with the nine symphonies, and being especially fond of the Szell-directed Cleveland Orchestra, I purchased the box set as described in the title. I was dismayed that during the ends of several movements, the recording suddenly shifted to the next without finishing the previous, thereby truncating my enjoyment of some of the most dramatic music ever composed and performed. I would not recommed this box set to anyone who would like to hear the complete nine symphonies, but gave it two stars because at this stage of my life, something is better than nothing.

Szell the master conductor, Cleveland the master's voice.......2006-09-14

If you want to hear an orchestra that possessed unparalleled
precision, Cleveland's is what you want. I first heard the Cleveland and Szell in Wash DC in 1964 and never since have heard an orchestra whose players sounded as one. When that first note is sounded, you hear the orchestra, not a bunch of individual
musicians. While I like Szell's interpretations of Brahms, Schubert and Mozart above all others, I have to say that I prefer Walter's for a good portion of Beethoven, although Szell's 7th is very good. The one Beethoven work that I found to be best under Szell, by far, is his 5th Concerto with Leon Fleisher. I have never found another interpretation of that work that even approximates the outstanding performance that those two
gave us.

That these recordings are worth owning goes without saying. Each of the Leon Fleisher and George Szell collaborations in the five concertos ranks in my top three or so list of the respective composition, rendering the cycle an obvious first choice. Some might argue there is somewhat more choice for a complete cycle of the nine symphonies - personally, I would not want to live with (only) one complete cycle by any one conductor and orchestra - none seems fully satisfactory. Having said that, Szell and the Clevelanders' remains among the finest ever.

What I would be curious to know, however, is whether these remasterings are (once again) identical with the second Essential Classics/Classical Masters release (2002 Germany/Austria) or if the concertos have finally received the quality of remastering they deserve (as did the Fleisher/Szell Brahms concertos in the 1997 Masterworks Heritage release)? If not, it won't be worth ordering the same release of (per se wonderful) interpretations for the umpteenth time...

Unbelievable Bargain Beethoven!.......2005-11-26

These import recordings of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies and Five Piano Concertos, along with some Overtures and his Triple Concerto, are an unbelievable bargain. As I figure it, eight CDs at $30 equates to less than $4 a disc! What you get is George Szell conducting his awesome Cleveland Orchestra of the late fifties and early sixties in idiomatic performances that easily can be called "definitive". Every symphony, piano concerto, overture, as well as the Triple Concerto, are gems. Beautifully performed, with re-mastered sound that suggests that these studio performances were recorded yesterday, rather than over forty years ago. Pianist Leon Fleischer teams up with George Szell in the piano concertos, and what a team they make. I was constantly on the edge of my seat listening to these performances. Leon plays beautifully with passion and technique to burn, and the Cleveland Orchestra provides superb accompaniment to match. Never have I heard such a meeting of minds as what this soloist, conductor, and orchestra display. Simply awe-inspiring. With the venue changing to the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, there is a fine performance of the Triple Concerto. The soloists are Istomin, Stern, and Rose. What a winning lineup!
These Sony pressings were made in Austria and contains only French Liner Notes about "Szell & Beethoven", repeated on each of the eight discs. Since I can't read French, it doesn't really matter. Besides, I bought this incredible set for Beethoven's glorious music. Grab these CDs while they're still available. Very highly recommended and much too good to pass up.

P.S. I am so glad that I bought this set when it was still affordable at $30, as I now notice that it's selling for more than $80.

Superior Collection in Every Way.......2005-01-14

Ofra Haza Greatest Hits, Volume One, is a beautiful and excellent 3 CD collection of 59 songs. This set along with Greatest Hits Volume Two offer a great compilation of most of Ofra Haza's best songs, as well as songs previously released only as 45 singles. Both volumes contain some great previously unreleased songs. Volume Two, another 3 CD set, contains an entire previously unreleased album, the excellent "Queen in Exile." Volume One is very worthwhile and satisfying even for those fans who already have all or most of her previously released material. Although I have all of her post 1977 albums except "Shirey Moledet Two", until this collection I have never heard the beautiful songs "Forty," "Listen to the Waves," "Jerusalem of Gold," "Haven't Talked About Love Yet," "The Golden Apple," "Sailor Boys," and "This Year inshalla." "Forty" is the best song here of the ones not previously released on album or CD. At least six of the previously released songs are alternate takes that I have never heard before. And for those unfamiliar with her, this set is a great introduction to Ofra Haza's music. The artwork, photos, the inserts, and the packaging are all tastefully and pleasingly done. You will not be disappointed. A highly recommended collection.

A great joy for established Dean Martin fans.......2003-08-31

This 3 CD Dean Martin box set from the UK features a grand total of 84 great Dino performances, running more than three and a half hours in total. This collection holds a greater appeal to established Dino fans than to newcomers or the curious, though. Two of the CDs are made up of old recordings mastered from old radio transcriptions. The 31 ballads of Some Enchanted Evening and the 30 varied tracks of Everybody Loves Somebody are all wonderful, but they lack the fullness of sound to be found on later Dean Martin recordings. They also, with the exception of the classic song Everybody Loves Somebody, can not boast of any of Dino's most popular and familiar recordings. Many of these songs may well be unfamiliar and new to Dino fans, however; I for one had never heard the vast majority of recordings available here, making this box set something of a thrill to my Dino-loving ears.

The third CD is the true gem of this collection, though. This amazing live album gives us Dean Martin at his most entertaining best. The date is February 8, 1964, and the setting is the immortal Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. Those looking for the world's greatest crooner's delivery of impeccably romantic love songs should look elsewhere, though, as this performance lives up to its subtitle: An Evening of Music, Laughter and Hard Liquor. Dean is in full character as the fun-loving, alcohol-consuming entertainer he portrayed so well, and there is probably more comedy than singing over the course of this 58+ minute performance. I believe only On a Slow Boat to China is sung without some kind of interruption or comedic break, and most of the songs feature Dino's own reshaping of the lyrics. After quasi-serious renditions of Memories Are Made of This and That's Amore, Dino launches into a monologue of almost seven minutes. The man is absolutely hilarious; he had me laughing heartily nonstop and the live audience rolling in the aisles. A lot of give-and-take with the band appears in Dino's cover of Bing Crosby's June in January, then after a terrific delivery of the song You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Dean goes back to pure comedy. More Laughs With Dean features another six and half minute monologue. From there, we get a most extraordinary medley of "throw-away" comedy songs, as Dean gives his own special twist to some old, familiar songs. The Pretty Songs medley that follows is less than serious in and of itself, as is the medley of Dean's classic Volare and On An Evening in Roma. This is followed by almost ten minutes of hilarious dialogue, after which Dean wraps up the show with his closing theme of Mr. Wonderful. Rarely have I laughed so much and enjoyed a performance so completely as I did this historic recording of Dean Martin Live From the Sands.

THE Worst Dino cd I EVER Bought !.......2003-08-01

I bought this at a Sam Goody at the mall and I was appalled that they would release [material] like this. The sound quality is attrocious (I have RECORDS with better sound) The song selection was poor and it was sloppily put together. The artwork is not any better than the sound either. I listened to it and most of the tracks you can find much better versions of elsewhere. I am a huge Dean Martin fan but the only semblance this had to the Dino I love is the name. Most of the time it doesn't even sound like him. It's not the worst cd i ever bought but but the worst cd i've bought with Dean Martin's name on the cover. There's a reason it's cheap. I gave it two stars because it could have been worse but not by much. Also anything with Dino's name on it deserves at least two stars, no matter how bad.

One out of three is worth the price........2001-09-08

I bought this CD collection because I'm a fan of Frank, Dean, and Sammy (always remember that Frank's name ALWAYS comes first), especially the various editions of their live performances. It has, in its midst, one recording of a 60s-vintage show at the Summit's favored hangout, the Sands Hotel. Dean takes center stage in this solo outing and, pallie, it's a gas. The humorous theme for the evening -- okay, for any evening with Mr. Martin -- is alcohol. The coolness of it, the effect of it, his familiarity with it, the lack of memory after it. He also jokes about his wife and family, his friend Frank, and smoking, sex, and other subjects. It makes no matter if you do or don't remember all the TV shows, movies, and stage acts he did, because you'll laugh the whole way through and love it. I haven't even listened to the other CDs in the collection yet because I don't want to take this one out of my disk player. It's worth every penny I paid for it. Oh, by the way, Dean sings, too, and it ain't bad either, baby.

Dean Martin - " A Damn Good Entertainer".......2000-10-07

This is a must have for any true Dean Martin fan. The tracks from Discs 1 and 3 demonstrate Dino's beautiful vocal talents as well as his unique style with a playful tune. The Sand's Hotel performance on Disc 2 was one of his most memorable displaying Dean at his finest and is guaranteed to entertain you. Dean Martin charmed his way into our hearts and brought a smile to our faces. This CD brings that all back in one magical evening at the Sands in which one of his finest solo perfomances ever was recorded. Listening to this CD collection reminds us all that Dean will never be forgotten and will live forever in our hearts. In a television interview, Dean Martin was asked how he would someday like to be remembered. His response "as a damn good entertainer". Well Dino, that's exactly what you are being remembered as in the heart of one loyal fan of over 30 years. It is my hope that by others reading this review, they too, will get to listen to these CD's and appreciate the talents of this great entertainer. Thank you Dean - you are greatly missed!

Thanks to my parents and their peers, I was exposed to Dean Martin at an early age. As talent as the man is, I truly hate the title song, "Everybody Loves Somebody." Ever since I was barely out of the carriage, I would have to leave whenever I heard it because I truly cannot stand that song. I would rather hear the 5:00 train whistle and construction equipment. I truly hate that one song. That being the one exception, the rest of the collection remains easy listening music and a meeting grounds of the generations. (I'd still rather listen to Crosby, Stills & Nash).

Christy is yer man!.......2006-05-27

I think what some might take from this release is, "why are some of these tunes on here?" But to tell you the truth, there is no other way you will hear many of them.
Christy gets tunes from people written on cigarette packets, tunes on old cassette tapes(remember them!) and the Lord knows what other ways, so some of these are from concerts, where some enterprising little divil, concealed his little recording device under his gansey, or whatever and taped the big man. Christy in an attempt to be honest in that, he never did record and he may never, record the tune, has seen it fit to include it here and I am glad of it.
Christy, if you know of his recriminations against himself, is his own worst critic sometimes! There are tunes he has only done once. Tunes he will never do again, because he has felt, the time was never right.
After all the ups and downs and trials and tribulations this is Christy in the flesh! Some of the tracks made me wonder, but there was many a Moving Hearts concert, or "Christy" concert, I missed, till I found the man.
He will be around, (at least his music) long after all of us have departed this old sod and I thank the Powers (and the Paddy's) that I got to see and hear him throughout his life and that he has stayed in mine for over thirty years now.

I am a huge Christy Moore fan but was left with a hollow feeling after listening to these recordings. The majority are B sides for a reason. The sound quality is terrible in many places and Christy's voice unrecognizable - though he was very young in some of the recordings. I would recommend for the fanatic who owns all of Christy's recordings and wants to get his/her hands one something new.

Once again Christy has outdone himself and produced a memorable collection of his songs. Some you may know, others you may not. Either way you will fully enjoy everything this album has to offer. So nice to enjoy the entire career of Christy and how he has grown since his first few songs. A true gem that every Christy fans needs to complete their collection. Do yourself a favor and get this album and sit back and enjoy everything Christy has to offer.

The greatest lo-fi songwriter.......2003-01-29

The scene: A flat in Sheffield in 1985. An unemployed overweight middle-aged man
fights off boredom by writing songs. With no musical training, he does his
best to record them using a four track tape deck, a guitar, and a cheap synth
and drum machine.

A few years later, he has around 400 songs on cassette, mostly untitled,
kept in a plastic bag. Major record labels are completely uninterested.
Friends persuade him to release some of the songs on a CD, as is. A music
publishing deal pays for a run of 1000 discs, and "I Was Born A Man" is
released.

The album sells out by word of mouth. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
Three more albums are put out, with postcards for listeners to vote on
their favorite tracks. The limited releases sell out and become highly
valuable collectors' items. Suddenly every record company is calling.

So Baby Bird the solo artist went on to become Babybird the band and have some
UK hit singles. Sure, they were pretty good, but somehow something important
had been lost in the chaos of suddenly selling half a million singles and
playing packed gigs in London.

These are the original four track recordings. They might be musically crude in
places, but they have an honesty and soul that the slick commercial Babybird
albums lack. The songwriting is eccentric, poetic, down-to-earth, witty,
wistful, brilliant. One man pouring his soul into his music.

"Wouldn't let me see you, like an angel swimming in hell, now I know the reason
why, wish I'd pushed the doorbell."

If I could make just one album as good as Baby Bird's, I could die happy.
This boxed set has six of them. They're all good. It's a crying shame this
man hasn't achieved recognition in the USA.

The original quintet of albums has been remastered by Stephen Jones (Baby
Bird), with high end studio equipment used to extract as much as possible from
the master cassettes. The songs are noticably clearer than on the original
releases, while keeping their lo-fi charm. So yes, the box set is worth buying
even if you have all the original CDs.

The mysterious sixth "black album" contains 18 previously unreleased tracks
from the bag of tapes. Though not quite up to the standard of the previous
five, there are some great songs here. In style, it's perhaps closest to
"Dying Happy".

I have to say I feel sorry for people who think this slick production is on a par with Michaels golden period of 1979 to 1992. This video is fun and interesting but lacks the essential magic that drove the world crazy with things like Moonwalker and The Bad Tour. Its all too slick and all too perfect. It has its good moments but really is only considered great by those kind of fans who have missed out on all the good old days hype. Ghosts is not something to make you jump for joy and the special gold CD single is good for 'On The Line" but the other cuts just suck. A must have for any real fan but I'd rather watch that Bad Tour Documentary anyday, if only I still had it. I gave my Ghosts box set away, I kind of want it back but not much.

this is right in the alley way of a music video masterpeice! it had its little kinks that stray it from perfection but what is perfect? this video had me second guessing which music video of his was my favorite. smooth criminal will remain as my all time favorite but ghosts falls right into second place. i do think that the crowd couldve had more interaction with the plot but like i said before what is perfect?

I actually got "Ghosts" off of Ebay two years ago, I got it in the VHS format. I love it. Although I must admit, if I would have known that it was going to come on VH1, MTV, and MuchMusic nowadays, I'd have waited and taped it off of the television. But that's ok. Nothing like having your own real copy of a movie that you love. I'm hoping and praying that Mike will come out with a new one. Cause I'm just a big big big MJJ fan.

For all of you hardcore Michael-fans, this is absolutely a must have. Originally Sony intended to bring out singles like Is it Scary & Smile. However, ...this wonderful box set was released. It continues the following items:

- The Ghost Video (approx. 35 minutes) - The Ghost Program Book (as given to the visitors in Cannes) - The cd Blood on the dancefloor/HIStory in the mix - A limited edition cd-single with the following songs:

1) On the line 2) Ghost (Mousse T's sing a long mix) 3) Is it scary (DJ Greek's scary mix)

1 = a previously unreleased song by Michael that was intended for Spike Lee's movie Get on the bus. Beautiful ballad, produced by hitwonder Babyface 2 & 3 are also unreleased mixes. 2 = nothing more than a instrumental version, very boring. 3 makes you wanna turn off the music ....

The glossy ghost program is a pure collectors item, only a few thousand copies are being made, most of them were hand over to the celebrities who attended the premiere at the Cannes filmfestival. And the longform ghost video is a must have.

Also blood on the dancefloor, wonderful album. A few mid-quality mixes, but the 'new songs' blood on the dancefloor, morphine, superfly sister, ghosts & is it scary are obligatory food for every michael-adorer. So, give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.

This man is the killer entertainer of our time. Nothing else can be said except that he IS what entertainemnt is about.

And this Box Set proves that fact.

Michael Jackson's 'Ghosts' video is the best music long form video I have ever seen. He is an incredible dancer, and even better singer and a superb songwriter.

Ghosts - The Home Video

The video itself! Which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996. This video is his best effort since either 'Thriller', or 'Smooth Criminal.' The visual effects are amazing, the dancing is incredible and the story-line is solid. Check out the makeup in this video. Wicked!

Blood On The Dance Floor - The Album

The first five songs of this disc, 'Blood O The Dance Floor', 'Morphine', 'Superfly Sister', 'Ghost', and 'Is It Scarey' are masterpieces. The other 8 songs are remixes from Michael's 1995 opus, 'HIStory: Past, Present and Future: Book 1' which was one of Michael's best albums to date. Ghosts - The Program

An excellent addition to this Box Set. The actual program that was handed out at the Cannes Film Festival! The pictures are printed on beautiful glossy paper and their are many unreleased photos from the film!

This Box Set is deffinatly worth the money! When this comes back on themarket, you have to get this! It's amazing!
