Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good and dark, but not purely techno.......2003-12-31

Excepting two or three tracks, 'Dark Trance' is a more appropriate title for this 1997 compilation. Afficionados of early trance will find a lot to like in this album. The track selection generally maintains a respectable level of quality without being stylistically monotonous. Although it may not be techno, it's definitely dark. Most of the tracks are approximately 120-125bpm.

Unit:187 delivers one of the standout cuts in the form of a very solid, dark acid track; Octaine's "Reflecked to Dust" brings a touch of electro to the album; and Nerve Filter injects some additional stylistic diversity with "Ritalin", which is reminiscient of mid-1990s gabber. Surprisingly, the album also includes a couple of vocal productions, most notable of which is Covenant's "Tabula Rasa", which comes forward with a sound that should please any Underworld fan.

That said, none of the tracks are jaw-dropping; and even if they're dark, they're not evil. Still, if you're looking for 808 basslines with a dark acid flavor on top, you'll find it here. Overall, a decent addition to your acid trance library.
