Mobley's Octet.......2003-02-12
The four Mobley originals on this recording were written while Mobley was in prison during the mid sixties. Duke Pearson arranged the songs at Mobley's request and they were recorded upon Mobley's release. Inspired by Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool" band but swinging much harder this modal/hardbop date kicks off with the tuba and euphonium playing the lead-in to "Hank's Other Bag" - Duke Pearson's mastery of arrangment is established within the first few measures of the song. Mobley is in fine form, as are the other all-stars - good songs, good performances, well worth finding.
Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax; Lee Morgan - Trumpet; James Spaulding - Alto Sax; Kiane Zawadi - Euphonium; Howard Johnson - Tuba; McCoy Tyner - Piano; Bob Cranshaw - Bass; Billy Higgins - Drums

Product Description
This CD contains an entire performance of the musical hit, GUYS ON ICE, as performed in Door County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1999. At that time, the show was a one-act. (It was expanded into two acts in 2000.) The recording features the late playwright Fred Alley as Lloyd, Doug Mancheski as Marvin, and James Valcq playing the piano and appearing as Ernie the Moocher. Alley and Valcq created the musical of THE SPITFIRE GRILL.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, offbeat show.......2007-01-14
An ice fishing musical? A show about two guys in a hut on the ice? The best Wisconsin musical ever? Surprise, both the show and songs are pretty good.
Sure it's a little cornball with terse men (in the Lake Wobegon tradition) and lots of ice fishing jokes, but it's also clever, fresh, with fun, listenable songs, many of which have a depth and sweetness as unexpected parallels are drawn between ice fishing and life. The CD is not just the songs, it's (most of) the show. It was recorded during a performance so you hear the audience laughing at the jokes making it more fun. Recommended.
Minor quibble -- the CD description and liner notes claim it is the whole show, but I recently saw the show at a local theater in its New England premier and the beginning of the second act (circa 2007) is missing from the CD.

Only one quibble.......2003-03-16
If you're used to the showcase versions, you're gonna miss the dubs & there's room. But this is strictly "all killer, no filler".
Classic Dance Hall/Lover's Rock.......2001-02-15
Slice of the Cake is one of those classic reggae albums that bears up well 16 years later. With strong, full production and great sound, this is the best of the many Sugar Minott albums with great strength and variety throughout the whole CD. The lover's rock track "Is It True" is one of the classics of the genre and will make anyone get up and dance. Politics are not ignored with tracks like No Vacancy addressing the unemployment problems of Jamaica. "Give Thanks and Praise" is an homage to his Rastafarian roots and the hits "Slice of the Cake" and "Buy Out The Bar" are only a few of the very strong selections on this CD. Minott has had a long career in reggae and this is perhaps his finest moment. Add it to your collection today, you won't be disappointed.

Splendid Autobiographical Songwriting from Nancy McCallion.......2006-10-19
This may be the most autobiographical of the CDs made by that great, late Irish Celtic/Mexican/Country/Bluegrass band, The Mollys, which earned ample critical acclaim from the likes of The Washington Post, and frequent visits to such notable New York City venues as Lincoln Center's Live-Out-of-Doors Festival held each summer in August, and the Rodeo Bar, one of the premier venues for country music in New York City. For many years they were the best musical export from my favorite Southwestern city, Tucson, AZ, and though I have heard quite a few Irish Celtic, Country and Bluegrass bands since then, especially here, in of all places, New York City, none of the bands I've heard have matched the splendid chemistry exhibited by the original members of The Mollys, including its founding female vocalists and guitarists, Catherine Zavala and Nancy McCallion. Here Nancy McCallion has written a captivating musical autobiography which pays more homage to her country roots than to Irish Celtic and other influences. I still don't understand why The Mollys never became the commercial success which I - and many other fans of theirs from Tucson and elsewhere - thought that they would be. And yet, on a somewhat happier note, if you happen to visit Tucson's The Boondocks bar on New Year's Eve this year, then you'll be treated to an extraordinary musical event; the latest "reunion" concert of The Mollys's original band members, including my favorite Mexican-American "colleen", Catherine Zavala, and of course, Nancy McCallion. Let's hope that this "reunion" concert will be the first of many, including more visits to the Big Apple, so that those unfamiliar with The Mollys will hear their excellent music at venues like Lincoln Center's Live-Out-of-Doors Festival and the Rodeo Bar.

If the black-vampire-hunter-as-action-hero genre isn't exactly oversaturated, it's hardly because of the strong star turns of Wesley Snipes in the film adaptations of the popular Blade graphic novels. This sequel to the '98 original may have a plot hole (or three), but Marco Beltrami takes the baton from the original vamp-hunting thriller's Mark Isham and delivers a rousing orchestral score full of dark corners and ominous percussive thunder. While the film's strong, club-mix-heavy song score emphasizes the story's contemporary setting, Beltrami instinctively gets the tale's gothic, sword 'n' sorcery roots, punctuating his rhythmic, suspenseful score with blasts of Barbarian-friendly blasts of brass. The title track fuses the composer's dramatic instincts with the back-to-the-'70s synth-swagger of electronica artist-producer Danny Saber, while "Nomack the Knife" is anything but playful, powered by a beat-heavy symphonic wallop that just might clear the dance floor. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Never liked Marco, but..........2003-09-01
... Blade 2 was actually pretty good. Tough, many of the tracks i hoped for, wasent on the disc at all. Its a ok CD to add to your soundtrack collection.
People..........2003-03-20
#Not a review of the actual score, but soundtrack#
Look, for those of you coming to this in search for the songs appearing in the movie other than the composed pieces for the movie will find them on the release titled SOUNDTRACK. Yes, they did pull a big nasty on us with the first soundtrack release with Blade (not II). But if you [iago27sp, I understand your frustration, I can relate] would look a little closer..there is a soundtrack for Blade II, which does actually feature many of the songs appearing in the movie (yet cdnow requires searching for Blade 2, not Blade II, to find it)..take a look..they call this a SCORE for a reason =)
Good luck in your search (to everyone).
What a SNORE! Don't waste your money..........2002-11-28
Don't waste your hard earned money on this one. Just like the last movie, the original score is a bore.
Looking for a Song from the movie.......2002-11-12
Does anyone know the name of the song that plays after Blade emerges from the pool of blood in the last few minutes of the movie when he begins attacking all the security guards in Blade 2?
They did it to us again........2002-11-02
Remember all the bumpin jams from the last movie that didn't seem to make it onto the soundtrack? Well, it's the same with this soundtrack. I too was interested in the songs from the 'House of Pain' scene. The good news is that I found them. (That's right, there are two songs in that scene.) The first one--the one with lyrics that begins right when they show all the vampires dancing--is "Tao of the Machine" by BT, and The Roots. Run a search on google, I found a downloadable mp3 from some foreign site. The second song, the techno music without lyrics, is "Blood is Pumping" by Voodoo and Serano. I hope this helps everyone looking for the GOOD music from the movie. As far as a review of this CD, take a listen to the samples below and see if it's what your looking for, it wasn't what I wanted.

PORTER WAGONER AT HIS EARLY BEST.......2003-12-15
This cd is composed of his earlier material and has some radio comedy skits with Red Foley and Jim Reeves. Every track on this album is a gem. I have the Essential Porter Wagoner and Porter Wagoner's Greatest Hits cds, but this is the one that I play and enjoy the most. I had been looking for a great cd by Porter Wagoner for years and had just about given up until I found A Rare Slice of Country. Even the picture on this cd, showing a young Porter Wagoner, is great. If you truly want a great album by Porter Wagoner, give yiourself a treat and buy this one.
