There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
Well here we are with a great piece of history.
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.
If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15
Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Another day, another Lightnin' Hopkins collection. It's only to be expected for a musician whose career lasted six decades, and whose recorded output was so profuse (often for several labels simultaneously) that the neophyte is hard pressed to determine which of the many albums, compilations, and box sets to acquire. One could do worse than this collection from Rhino Records, which includes classics such as "Coffee Blues" and "Mojo Hand," and even includes a few songs that aren't to be found on Mojo Hand: The Lightnin' Hopkins Anthology, generally considered the ideal collection for the beginning Hopkins aficionado. While hard-core fans probably have all these songs somewhere in their extensive collections, this CD is ideal for those seeking an introduction to the seminal bluesman. After all, he did help develop Texas blues, played a hand in developing the blues from rural to urban art form, and rode the 1960s folk-blues revival to one of the longest careers in blues history. Covering the 20 years of Hopkins's career between 1941 and 1961, the collection also provides a brief history of the development of the blues over the same period. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
The art of Lightnin' Hopkins.......2007-05-19
The songs on this CD were recorded between 1946 and 1961. They cover a wide range of his songs. The instrumentation is spare, with--normally--only Hopkins or playing or only a couple other backing players (sometimes we don't even know who the other musicians were). This is unelectrified blues, hearkening back to an earlier era in the history of the blues.
A handful of examples of his work on this CD:
"Baby please don't go." The cut features simple and spare guitar work by Hopkins. The liner notes comment that (page 12): "They say he only knew three chords on the guitar. I say that made him greater. . . .I saw how he turned technical limitations to aesthetic advantage." He repeats the title line several times to set a tone and atmosphere and implores her not to go to New Orleans. Hopkins plays alone, with no backing instruments.
"Mighty Crazy", too, features no backing musicians. He surely displays a "lived in" voice. He begins the song, as with "Baby please don't go" with a repeat of the title four times.
Finally, "Mojo Hand," one of his better known works. This cut features a nice rhythm section backing him (musicians' names not known). This has some of the best recording quality on the CD. He shows animated singing and spare but effective guitar work.
The liner notes summarize Hopkins' place in the blues world (pages 11-12): "Lightnin' Sam Hopkins was one of the towering geniuses of American music. At a time when big-city blues was electrifying the world, Lightnin' brought us back to the basics. He infused his country sensibility and singular personality into every song he sang." This represents a nice introduction to the work of one of the finest blues players.
The blues do not get any bluer than this................2006-08-17
The blues do not get any bluer than this. This was my first foray into Texas/folk blues, and it will most certainly not be my last, as the music on this CD are some of the most representative blues music I have ever heard. One of my favorite songs is a song sung by both Hopkins and Sonny Terry, Conversation Blues. If you do not like this song, the blues are simply not for you! But every song on here is exceptional, something I had not expected as I picked this up more out of curiosity than anything else. Now, it is one of my favorites to listen to, right up there with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. The album covers Hopkins career for a 20 year period, from 1941 to 1961, and is ideal for anyone who is starting out their Hopkins' collection(as I was).
Sam "Lightning" Hopkins learned the blues, at least in part, from Blind Lemon Jefferson, and for a time even became his guide. Let the music on this CD be your guide to Texas/folk blues. Surely there can be no better guide for an introduction into this genre.
A definite 5 star pick, especially for all that Rhino has managed to pack on here for the inexpensive price. A must have.
One thing to note however: If you believe from the outset that you will come to love Hopkins' music, Rhino's release of "Mojo Hand" is recommended; it is a 2-CD set of Hopkins career. Either way, you will not go wrong.
A Much Loved CD.......2006-03-03
Bought this CD as a gift and he really loves it. He grew up listening to Lightnin' Hopkins, so it really brought back some good memories for him.
Original "Gutbucket" Blues.......2006-02-26
A classic from a little known, at least by me, talent. Lightnin Hopkins is easily one of the best blues artists I ever heard. This is down home, back in the day, drafty shack wif dee leaky roof Blues.
i agree lightnin' hopkins is the real deal .......2006-01-02
i'm a huge fan of deep south blues..this is really passionate blues..some blues get on my nerves not enough passion and repetitive you get none of that with lightnin' hopkins he sings writes and played from the heart and fantastic collection by a superb artist that's up there with the best blues artist's
i.e jimmy page, jimi hendrix peter green muddy waters....
the reason i got into lightnin' hopkins was because i was watching a program on john peel's record box and "mojo hands" was in that box and they had about 30 seconds of performance footage i was hooked by the sheer brilliance..my best of it vagely different to this compltation but as i see there has been many that shine the torch on the brillance that is lightnin' hopkins

Amazon.com essential recording
Forty-three tracks of the seminal bluesman's recordings for Aladdin in the 1940s, The Complete Aladdin Recordings is a must-hear. Performing alone with his guitar or with sparse accompaniment--usually pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith--Lightnin' dishes out the best of Texas country-blues. Starting off with "Katie May," Hopkins's first recording for Aladdin, the two-CD set winds its way through the guitarist's years with the label, showcasing what he was up to before his decline in popularity and eventual revival with the folk boom of the 1960s. Those expecting the almost-rock & roll of the latter period won't here any of that here, but they will hear its germination in such rollicking tunes as "Big Mama Jump" and "Let Me Play with Your Poodle." Definitely required, not only to hear the best of early Lightnin', but to hear the best of Texas country-blues. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Great collection, but too clean.......2007-01-31
I love the assembly of songs, but to me they all seem too clean, too tame, and too "studio" ...versions of songs which he did better on other recordings. I have it and I'll keep it, but there are better sessions out there.
From the Cotton Patch to the Big City.......2001-12-08
Learning at the knee of legendary Bluesman Mance Lipscomb, Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins blazed an incendiary trail through the urban Texas landscape.
These early tracks show the base upon which he built through the 60's and 70's. His concerts were often legendary, including one unforgettable night when he played at the University of Houston, on the same night as Abbie Hoffman was giving a speech across town at Rice University, at a far more ballyhooed event.
I know for a fact, because I saw them, and I was one, that most campus politicos chose to attend to Lightnin' instead of Abbie. Us Texans do know our roots.
Unforgettable moments of his concerts included such nicities as his swigging from a half-pint of Bourbon, and playing for as long as the tips came in. Late in the evening, his foot would become loose and begin pounding out the rhythm of the bass lines which his drop-thumb played. And a sly grin would sneak across his life-worn face. This was when he would impart his greatest wisdom to us.
He's a legend who has been missed.
From a man who loves the blues:.......2001-09-03
Many bluesmen have come and gone, but certain ones seem to have been around forever. Their music predates the fancy new singers, and while those new guys rise and fall, the old bluesmen stay the same, unchanged by time and just as beautiful and appealing as ever before.
Lightnin' Hopkins is one of those classic blues singers. Like Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, and all the rest, Hopkins is one of the founders of the blues - whoever plays the blues today is merely standing on the shoulders of these legends.
This collection of Lightnin' Hopkins recordings is truly worth investing in. The quality of the music cannot be contested, and the enjoyment of listening to them cannot be underestimated. And you can't beat the price! Where else can you get over 40 classic blues tunes for this price?
If you enjoy classic blues: get this album, sit back, and watch the world around you slow down for a while.
An Overlooked Founding Father........2001-07-20
There is a lot of John Lee Hooker here, and a lot of other stuff as well...
There early stuff has the wonderful gritty feel of Hooker's early pieces like "Teachin the Blues," but then the two start to part company.
Lightnin' has an endearing high pitch vocal style that immediately seems wrong for a classic blues musician, but grows on the listener until you cannot imagine the music any other way.
The later recordings make use of fun upright piano and slightly rocky tempos.
Not as earthy as Hooker, not as blue as Muddy, not as orchestrated as B.B., Lightnin has nicely balanced sound that may not always stictly qualify as blues.
Please note: this is a two-disc set! For $12! Ka-Ching.
Blues as personal as a hushed conversation.......2000-05-12
Sam Hopkins was a throwback - a vanishing breed, the troubador, the street musician...and his music was/is intensely personal. Lightning's lyrics and delivery combined with his guitar licks and irregular measures are unique. It's not music to boogie to although I have; it's music to reflect on, to enjoy Lightning's wry humour and observations. Rough around the edges but that's part of its appeal. Most fans will tell you that he was like no other.

What 'Lightnin' Hopkins cd wouldn't get 5-stars?.......2007-06-09
Simple...if you love Sam 'Lightnin' Hopkins' style of playing, singing, writing and performing, you'll love this. A very prolific performer and recording artist, this provides a good mix of his style. Notice the finger work: it's clean, strong, and complex. The lyrics are great, based on simple life experiences. He could write a song at the drop of a hat. Listen to the tracks and you'll be amazed. If you don't love this stuff, then you don't love the blues.

This Lightnin Disc ROCKS, it rolls, and it JUKES!!!.......2001-02-07
I'm a serious Sam Hopkins fanatic having over 20 of his discs in my collection, this by far is my favorite. It was stolen from my car recently and I was greatly aggrivated, hence coming to Amazon to purchase. Mr. Hopkins was virtuoso guitarist, an underrated vocalist, and a folk poet's poet! If you don't like this disc, you just don't like music.

I own about a dozen lightnin albums--this is my favorite, both because of the number of tracks but the quality of lightnin's improvisation. He is subtly backed, still allowing his own lyrical, distinctly 'texan' sound to shine through.
Both boogies and ballads give this disc a comprehensive sampling of lightnin's style and subject. Whether he sings of women, god, gambling, travelling, or death, his music is harrowing.
The liner notes are quite good, also. Check out "I'm Gonna Build Me a Heaven of My Own" and "Lonsome Graveyard." Two of his best songs ever recorded. Whether he sounds transcendental or satiric, lightnin is the king of texas blues. Buy this disc immediately.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely awesome!!!.......2007-02-25
If you are really into NWOBHM, this is one stellar collection. Songs like "Let It Loose" by Savage and "Axe Crazy" by Jaguar make this a gem. I would also highly recommend buying the New Wave of British Heavy Metal '79 Revisited compilation (a 2 CD set).
Near Perfect NWOBHM Retrospective.......2006-11-18
The previous reviewer has this one pretty well covered (I hate when that happens), but I did want to add a couple of notes about the 3-disc retrospective Lightnin' To the Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection.
It's not an all-encompassing set. There are some notable artists from that era missing. I understand that record company issues might have prevented Judas Priest or Def Leppard's inclusion, but Sanctuary (at the time) had the rights to Iron Maiden and Motorhead. Besides, they included just about every other track from Metal for Muthas volume 1, why not add the two Maiden songs?
If you have both Metal for Muthas albums and one or more of the Neat Records compilations, you already have a good chunk of what is collected here.
The packaging is the only element that keeps this set from getting a full 5-star rating. The set is collected in a small cardboard box, with each disc housed it its own cardboard sleeve (like you see on most label sampler discs. These sleeves, with their tendency to scratch the discs as you remove and replace them, are a pet peeve of mine. Three slimline jewel cases (like the ones used for Castle/Sanctuary's Magnum anthology) would have been much better here. A nice, if somewhat sparse, booklet is included. I had hoped for something a bit more substantial (like what Castle/Sanctuary provided with their Uriah Heep reissues), given the importance of the scene the box set is chronicling, but I'll take what I can get.
Other than that relatively small gripe, I'm completely happy with Lightnin' To the Nations. The set covers a wide array of bands from this still-underrated scene, and the digitally remastered sound is a real plus, considering how much of this material was never released on CD in the first place. This is a must-have collection for NWOBHM fans, and one that just about any metal fan should probably check out, since the foundation for so many of the bands we enjoy today was established during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
Excellent NWOBHM Collection.......2006-03-09
This is by far the best New Wave Of British Heavy Metal collection on the market. It features some of the more known bands of the movement such as Diamond Head and Saxon (of course, not many NWOBHM bands could be referred to as "known"), as well as obscure acts such as Dark Star, Atomkraft, and Aragorn. While it's true that superstar groups like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Motorhead, and Judas Priest are missing, keep in mind that before you buy this, you should have a healthy supply of music from those bands already (by the way, the Amazon tracklisting lists "Sanctuary" by Maiden and "See You In Hell" by Grim Reaper as two of the tracks, but they are not present on the package I received). As of 4/9/05, Amazon lists the songs, but not the bands who perform them. Here's the rundown: (band - song title)

Album Description
When I listen to this recording again many years later, I still have the same sense of excitement I felt that day when I sat in his shadowy room with the bottle of gin on the floor, and the sounds of other people in the house drifting through the door. Through the blues revival and on into the 1970's he went on to record many more albums, including some sessions we did together, but this one, still, for me, his most exciting musical statement. Often during those years I was asked if there was some way to describe the country blues, and the easiest way I could think of was to play this labum. Whenever I think of Linghtning and his music it is this sound and these blues that come back to me. -Sam Charters, Mansfield Center, Conn. 1990

As raw, as earthy, as real as the blues can get. If you like blues, you need to hear this recording.

Lightnin' is the best, I buy all his stuff, I love him man, you gott'a ad him to your CD collection if you call yourself a blues fan!
Lightnin' Strikes !.......2003-10-01
This is a marvellous CD--no-frills, honest, straight-from-the-heart acoustic blues from a true master. I actually felt as if I were in the same room with this legendary artist.
I'm not sure where the dividing line is between blues and folk--in the case of Lightnin' Hopkins maybe there isn't one. This is surely American music at its purest, undistilled best !
No more hype--if you want to add a very special disc to your collection, look no further.
Superb Lightnin'.......2000-04-23
This magnificent recording is in my top five blues albums of all time. That's saying something. While it is not necessarily the most representative Lightnin' Hopkins, it might be the best. Here is Lightnin' bursting with energy after having vanished from the recording scene for four years, and the emotional, joyful, painful, gorgeously human blues he gives vent to are staggering to hear. Just Lightnin', close-miked in a hotel room, playing from his soul, with no clue that he was igniting his career anew with this album. Sound is outstanding, songs are less personal than usual for him (many are traditional) but absolutely riveting. Buy this and look into the soul of country blues. Buy it, and smile.
lightnin at his best.......1999-11-28
This is just lightin and his acoustic guitar recorded in a hotel room, just before the 60's blues revival. This is my personal favorite of lightin, better than any other compilation. If you have seen any video of lightin performing live, maybe you wondered why he wasnt captured like that on record. Well, listen to this one, its a great live performance, with lightnin taking all the decisions.

Mr. Lightnin' Tells It Like It Is, Awesome!!!.......2000-10-22
Sam Lightnin' Hopkins is my favorite blues artist and if there's one album I own to explain why this would be it. Texas Blues showcases this Master Bluesman's dynamic range with sixteen timeless tracks.
"Once Was A Gambler" is an all out guilt laden Blues song
"Meet You At The Chicken Shack" has a decisive Rock 'n Roll feel
"Bald Headed Woman" is hilarious
"Tom Moore Blues" is deep and reflective
"Watch My Fingers" is a self-proclaimation of skill
"Love Like A Hydrant" is love-life commentary
"Slavery Time" is a homage to the past
"I Would If I Could" is about being boastful, and backing it up
"Bud Russell Blues" is a solemn memory
"Come On Baby" is a jumpin' Rock tune
"Money Taker" explores the pitfalls of relationships
"Mama's Fight" is a strangely jovial reflection on spousal abuse
"My Woman" is a soulful story of love lost
"Send My Child Home To Me" is a fond childhood memory
"Have You Ever Loved A Woman" is kinda self-explanatory
and last but not least there's "Black and Evil" which is a joking look at racism that's truly insightful
For fans of the Blues this is indeed a necessary album, it doesn't get any better than Lightnin' Hopkins and that's the God's honest truth! Amen!

Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great blues artists. You'll get a strong sense of why upon listening to the 16 tracks (including four unearthed specially for the CD) that the fortyish Texan made for Herald Records in 1954, about the time his African American fans deserted his country blues for a more modern sound. Hopkins sings "Sick Feelin' Blues" and the rest (except for a couple of boogie instrumentals) in a carefully regulated yet declarative manner, expounding on rotten luck with women and life through an outstanding blend of warmth and self-awareness. Though usually thought of as an acoustic guitar picker, he plugs in here and lets amplification give an edge of unresolved tension to his jagged rhythms and idiosyncratic musical ideas. And while Hopkins is better known as a solo performer, he gets chased by a frisky rhythm section throughout. --Frank-John Hadley
Customer Reviews:
Lightnin' And the Blues:The Herald Sessions.......2007-02-07
Do you "get" the blues? (I borrow the question from one of the album titles of the great Jimmie Vaughan.) Not "da blooze", like your typical overplaying/noodling/wanking crapola. But the blues. The SOUND is evocative and pure unadulterated America. (Chuck Berry had to have heard this material and gotten inspiration from the uptempo numbers.) The synergy of Lightin's voice and the licks and stops on that amplified guitar (call and response), the cushy ambience of the acoustic bass, the pop of that snare, the swish of the highhat-- look, if you "get" the blues, this will be the purchase of the decade for you. Tough. Real. Incendiary. This album can't be beat.
Lightnin' plugs in..........2005-10-14
If you are like me, when you think of Lightnin' Hopkins you think of acoustic blues. Thats why this collection took me by surprise when I first heard it. When this disc was re-released, Rolling Stone magazine had said that this was like hearing Lightnin' Hopkins in the world's first power trio and thats a pretty accurate description. I had never heard Lightnin' play electric guitar before hearing this and was surprised at how he could cut loose on it. The bass and drums are definitely subdued, making this disc all about Lightnin' and his blues. There are a few uptempo boogie type numbers, but most of the songs are intimate slow blues reflecting on the typical blues themes of bad luck with women and illness. I would recommend this to a fan of electric blues or a Lightnin' Hopkins fan that wants to hear a different take on his music.
A Pox On All Their Houses.......2003-03-17
Mostly the producer for even conceiving of the session, the rhythm section for taking the gig and Po' Lightnin' for seemingly not even being aware there were a bassist and drummer present. Kinda cool to hear him play the electric guitar, though. Don't get me wrong, Lightnin' is one of my faves, but not this date.
No doubt about it........2002-09-04
Sam- I hadn't any doubt that he was one of the greats since the first time I heard him pickin' on his aladdin recordings which I suggest over this. This is great though also. First off this is 40:00 minutes so it is a decent length. 2ndly it is a rare Electric Lightin'. It doesn't show his full guitar playing like his solo acoustic work often does like his use of playing bass lines and treble melodies at once. To hear his style of lead playing on an electric though is really an earful. It is serious and shows real roots of Rock Classics too. Sam could have easily been a Chuck Berry or the like, but this is better anyway. The amazing technical prowess overshadows the repetition. Look at it like Robert Johnson's songs where he uses certain rythms and leads frequently but only as a backdrop or a springboard [ And Robert never soloed much, so lightin' has him up there]. The rythm section is part of what stops lightnin' from showing his skills as a guitar player who can play rythm and lead at the same time, though the drums and bass on the slow tunes is usually neither a harm nor a hurt, the fast tunes I think Benefit heavily from the support. On the fast boogies Lightin' does show that he is not pure slow blues here: after all, Sam used to be an entertainer who made people dance. Some of these foot stompers are in such contrast to the slow blues it is pretty much what early rock boogies were based on and shows some mind-boggling playing from lightning with leads and chording. This record is great but then again I like anything I have ever heard by lightnin' and do suggest atleast 2 lightnin' records for all fans of deep down blues. The Complete Aladdin Recordings two cd set and Texas Blues. If you like and have those than I suggest this one too. Anyone that says that lightning isn't technically able because of some of the repetition in licks, is really not hearing what he's playing. Give it a chance. When he does play things over- the notes are so good that I just like hearing them again I don't get bored with it at all. They're tried and true things he repeats. Anyway I think this is very solid and also interesting is the song ''Life I used to Live.'' This is credited as an Eddie Jones [Guitar Slim] song. The music was taken from the song ' The Things that I used to do ' but Lightnin' changed the words almost completely. He made it about a man changing his life and going back to his religous ways. This is not what Slim's song was about but anyway, the melody is the same. Lightnin' even sounds like he's using the beginning of this song once or twice elsewhere. It was an interesting ''cover'' anyway. There's some odd reverb on Sam's voice in parts but overall an excellent set of blues music. Fast tunes, slow tunes, in the middle onces too, all perfect examples of what they are. I believe this was done in 1954. It says on the notes that if you had one of the original copies that it would be worth over 1,000 dollars. Impressive huh?
lightnin' flashes electricity.......2002-07-07
The legendary Herald sessions are (partially) presented here, remastered and sounding great.
These 1954 recordings have Lightnin' on electric guitar with bass and drums, something that wouldn't happen again for a while. The album that this CD reproduces, "Lightnin' and the Blues," didn't sell, incredible as that may seem now. The market for Lightnin's style of blues was disappearing among black audiences, and record companies were too dumb and/or shortsighted to really try to market the blues more widely than among that audience.
Fortunately for him, Lightnin' was "discovered" a few years later during the "folk blues" boom of the 1960s, where sanctimonious folkies looking for the "pure blues" recorded any bluesman they could find - as long as he was playing acoustic guitar. Lightnin', never one to pass up an opportunity to make a few bucks, pulled out the acoustic and obliged, to the tune of about half a million albums' worth of material.
Unfortunately, the vast amount of acoustic material Lightnin' cut tends to overshadow his electric guitar work, which is at the center of this CD. His electric guitar playing is raffish, offhanded, sly, sinister, and altogether engaging, exactly like his songs.
Lightnin' recorded with bass and drums subsequent to this, particularly for his Prestige/Bluesville sides, but the drummer and bassist on those recordings were altogether too polite and stolid. Here, his accompanists push him, and Lightnin' pushes back, distorted amp and all. This rocks, seriously, and bear in mind this was in 1954, when rock and roll music was largely pudgy white fellas with well-pomaded quiffs playing accelerated versions of swing music. Lightnin's hairy, rough, driven take on the blues here is years ahead of its time, probably one reason why "Lightnin' and the Blues," didn't sell like it should have in its day. In later years, listeners realized how great this album was, and collectors swooped in, soaking up the short supply of original albums, and keeping most people - even Hopkins fans - from hearing this important work.
Here, however, we have the entire album plus extra cuts, in terrifically remastered digital form. Even if you have every other Lightnin' CD out there, you need this one, and if you have never encountered Lightnin' before, this is a great place to start.

Amazon.com essential recording
Lightnin' Hopkins, the seminal Texas bluesman, was rediscovered in the 1960s when the folk revival made folk and country-blues musicians hot news. This seven-CD set includes much of Hopkins's work during that period, though he recorded for so many different labels that getting everything is well-nigh impossible. This is a good start, though, including as it does some concert recordings in addition to studio reissues and interviews. Hopkins's mastery of mood and technique makes this a chronicle not only of historical interest, but musical as well; while Hopkins's musical style didn't change much over the course of his multidecade career, he was certainly among the best at what he did. --Genevieve Williams

Down home and soulful.......2007-04-11
For a Hopkins fan or a music historian this set is fantastic. Sam Hopkins was a master story-teller - period - and there is a lot of spoken material that inter-weaves his personal history, regional blues history, and general reflections from a different time and a predominantly rural black culture. Having grown up in the rural South as a small boy, I sat at the feet of such story tellers for hours transformed by their spell. That said, if one only wants to listen to Sam Hopkins's music, there are better recordings or at least better quality recordings and one can obtain a suitable collection for less dough. This is a must-have set for a special sub-genre of enthusiasts and for them it is a rare treasure, indeed.

Awesome Collection.......2006-02-25
Yes, it is expensive but if you are interested in the blues then it's a really good deal. As has already been explained, the 7th disc is only interviews. But the 6 discs of music are incredible. I had to work up my nerve to make this purchase a few years ago. Luckily, I did get a discount but I still say it's worth the hefty price tag. I'm listening to 'Last Night Blues' right now and it's just as haunting today as it was when I first bought the set.
Blues in a box set.......2001-08-11
This seven disk, expensive box set is often a difficult pill to swallow, but I am glad that I did. On six disks twelve Lightnin' albums from the 60's are combined. If you are interested in Lightnin', do the math. The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Rocordings is a value. The seventh disk is full of interviews that may seem dull to some, but to a fan willing to spend $ to get the blues they are a welcome addition. A very interesting way to learn about the man is from his own voice in interviews like these. The liner notes are a simple histoy, a few pictures and a discography. Again, I am glad I bought it.
Rated Five Stars With A Footnote.......2001-04-11
This is one fantastic collection of music! However, I was a little disappointed by the apparent lack of effort that went into the finished product. With such a comprehensive assortment of music, I expected to find at least liner notes or a booklet with some biographical material or reviews. Also, it should be noted that the final disk in this set is only spoken word. While the novelty of it is awesome, and you get to here Lightnin's stories first hand, at my first listening I was somewhat off set because I wasn't expecting it. However, those things aside, this set is worth every penny!
