Elvis Costello kicked off his debut album with a formal device that would also serve his next two long-players well: the first thing you hear is his voice. That opening phrase--"Now that your picture's in the paper..."--was more than sneakily, if not intentionally, appropriate, since Costello was quickly declared the second coming. It's become de rigueur to dis the pub-rock backing of U.S. band Clover, but their work here is satisfactorily edgy; guitarist John McFee makes some of the arrangements with his wailingly articulate fills. The remastered Rhino reissue includes a full second disc of demos and rarities. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Plain and simple.......2007-04-10

One of the best debut albums--what they were called back before CDs--ever released. Though Elvis' infamous anger has tempered and he has ventured into an admirable array of musical genres, the depth and urgency of his songwriting skills are evident and prophetic here. Just try to grow weary of repeated plays of "Mystery Dance" and "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes." You will fail because they are endlessly listenable. This is a text book of rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Costello: The Real King.......2007-02-01

More Classic '1977' Gold. This contains some of Declans finest Moments and really none of his banter. Songs like "Blame It On Cain" and "Watching The Detectives" set to Prove that 1977 was the Peak year!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2007-01-01

I'm not sure of the exact date, but it was the winter of 77/78, and my friends and I drove thru a blizzard to catch Elvis in a little lecture hall at C.W. Post College on Long Island, N.Y. Did it ever open our eyes, ears and minds. He played most of this album plus some of what was to be "This Years Model".I had purchased "My Aim Is True"after hearing, "Alison" on the radio but that song was only a hint at the rest of what was on the album. Songs like "Watching The Detectives", "Mystery Dance" and "Less Than Zero" are brillant and still stand up some 30 years later. This is one of the all time best debut albums and previewed an incredible output for the next 2 years. I wish that the Attractions had played on this but the playing on it is fine but not nearly as intense as it was live. It's albums and shows like this that remind me why I love rock 'n roll.

5 out of 5 stars the first and greatest elvis........2006-05-23

at the time that this album came out i had just lost my little boy, my husband had left me for a woman 24 years my junior, & i had a serious rash all up & down my left side. i was DEPRESSED. then i heard this music & suddenly i wanted to wear lipstick again. i wanted to wear lipstick & i wanted to dance. what a great album. and to this day in 2006 it still is! the best elvis costello album known to man (and that's saying something).

5 out of 5 stars Elvis is King!.......2006-04-19

The angry young man hit a grand slam with this debut album. EC ain't much of a guitarist, but hey when you can capture what an entire generation is thinking within your lyrics...well, they call that genius! Back to back, the tunes here are all winners. Alison is a particular favorite of mine. This album is the beginning of a remarkable body of work that is still evolving.
Keep it up Mr. Krall :-)

This Buffalo, NY group is best known for their countless hooks, pop sensibility, and witty lyrics. Their debut was produced by Matt Squire (Panic! At The Disco, Thrice, Northstar). Their online presence is unlike anything Fueled By Ramen has ever experienced. They've consistently been in the top ten on purevolume.com for over six months, racking up over 1.6 million plays. Alternative Press named them one of the 100 Bands You Need To Know In 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, You gotta get this one!.......2007-07-07

I love this CD, its full of catchy little songs you can sing a long too. There are a couple of serious songs, but for the most part its upbeat and fun. When I first bought this I listened to it every day for a month. It is so awesome. I saw them in concert and they were pretty good also. It was a fun concert. If you like fall out boy, panic at the disco and other bands like that, you will probably like this song. The last two songs are the best, although some of the others are just really great too.

5 out of 5 stars DEAR GOD! I LOVE CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR!.......2007-05-08

buy this cd!

seriously, just do it. it's super fun pop/punk deliciousness. cute is what we aim for is going to blow up very soon, and don't you want to brag about how you knew about them BEFORE they went platinum? oh yes, you do. the vocals and lyrics are amazingly original. random even.

cute is what we aim for can also be seen on warped tour this year, so you should check them out there too.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Is What They Are.......2007-04-12

According to All Music and their critics, Cute Is What We Aim For and their cheekiness is not much to their liking. But what's really strange to me is there was only a measely second of hesitation on my part to like this CD; by the time the ending of the first track "Newport Living" came along, this band had a brand new fan. "You wanted to sell out/ but you couldn't even do that right/ so your price tag has been slashed/ and now you're on a half price clearance rack," umm hello, what a crack up. I love the fact they make fun of everything including themselves, where some critics find that they are perhaps trying to too hard to be clever, I disagree and think they're just funny enough to be clever - "The Fourth Drink Instinct" the story of a girl who gets drunk and screws someone and turns around and is surprised when he leaves her in the morning is great. It's a power rock ballad and perhaps it's toned down in terms of lyrics I can surely relate to it (I know friends like that) (What made you think that he couldn't find the door in the morning/ when he found that bed so easily in the dark?) ; "There's A Class For This" includes lines "drama doesn't follow me/ it rides on my back/ I may be ugly/ but they sure love to stare..." and in "Risque" they give us "Medically speaking you're adorable/and from what I hear/ you're quite affordable..." I love it. Musically, the band is more poppy than Boy Kill Boy and less tragic guitars a la The Smiths, but they aren't quite as experimental and fun as say Wheatus, in fact they sound a lot like a lot of those bands I don't like that out now a days - the dime a door dozen type with the chugging guitars and the high pitced wincy voice, but this time around it has won me over, the music moves in jaunts and rhythmic motions and the vocals are actually giving me a thrill with the witty lyrics - so critics be damned I'm telling you The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch is clever and lovable and umm cute.

5 out of 5 stars I listen to it over and over...and over and over and over.......2007-03-26

This cd is really great-one of my favorites to listen to! The songs are catchy and it's fun to sing all the lyrics, unlike other bands. Don't really understand how you can not like this cd, honestly.

5 out of 5 stars Must Own...Without a doubt.......2007-03-18

This album is very impressive in all the important ways. The singer and lyricist Shaant has a charismatic vocal presence. The lyrics are honest and not cliche. The music is catchy but at the same time mellow and not shallow (mellow without being boring, I generally don't like mellow music). There are fast songs and slow songs but all are good. This album is worth listening to all the way through, unlike most albums. The first time I listened to it I was doing things on the net and so gave it no attention, it was so good that it impressed it's worth on me through the minimal subconscious attention it was given. When I listened to it without distraction I found it good but like all great albums, it took a while to grow on me, and grow it did. It is now one of the best albums I have bought in a long time. Pick it up, esp. if you like the emo scene, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Blame it on Cain.......2007-06-16

Well, this album was a classic the day it was released back in Discotime, you should really give it a listen or 5 if you haven't before, but can someone, anyone tell me the point of re-releasing it again?

It IS more economical to buy it this way than with the bonus disc.
Maybe that's the point?

Highly recommended in any of its incarnations.

As it says all over the cover, "Elvis is King"!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis defines a genre.......2007-05-06

Shortly after Elvis Costello let this 13 song tornado touch down in the US, he made the infamous comment that his thorny songs about relationships were motivated by revenge and guilt. That having been said, rarely has this much misanthropic venting been so great a joy to listen to. It wasn't just that Elvis was angry, it was that he was throwing twisted phrases into the vocabulary with seeming effortlessness.
Take some of these:

"I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused."
"Rhythmically admired."
"Walking on the water won't make me a miracle man."
"Everything means less than zero."
And of course, "My aim is true."

That's just five songs. The astounding thing (at the time), was each song was always just as good as the one before it, if not better! During the burgeoning punk movement, most of the bands getting press were doing so less for the music than for the attention getting behavior. (Think the Sex Pistols, etc.) Despite the blatant headline grabber of his assumed name and that bizarre knock kneed mutation of Buddy Holly's look, Elvis' debut was one of musical assurance. Part of that came from the usage of Clover, the band of Californians that contained a few of Huey Lewis' eventual Newsmates, and John McFee's guitar work. It was McFee's brief guitar lick that gave "Alison" a signature introduction. While hardly the fiery backing Elvis would find once The Attractions signed on, Clover gave "My Aim Is True" a barebones framework that made the in your face immediacy of the songs explode from the album.

In 1977, this was one of the albums that changed my outlook on life. (Hey, I was 17 years old, when such things were still possible.) Of those records from that time in my life, this is one for the very few discs that stayed with me and one of the only artists to emerge with a lifetime's worth of talent. "My Aim Is True" remains a showcase for songwriters, no matter what the motivations for their pens.

Album Description

Resilient electro-pop music. The songs are catchy as hell and rise to meet all the duo's snobby music standards. With sing-along-when-you-think-you're-alone types of refrains, it's as if the oldies station on the car stereo is playing at the same time as the urban party music station, with the occasional interfering sonic sway of an '80s keyboard refrain. It's the sound of feeling fun and desperate and bravely romantically unsuccessful all at once. Easy listening for difficult feelings.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How could I have possibly forgotten how good this is.......2005-07-26

Like many of the other reviewers here, I first heard this band/album back in early 70's. Their music is simply great, the energy, the talent - everything. I'm listening to it again after a too long hiatus (it's on my vinyl collection) and I'm stunned - how could I have forgotten this music - I'm ordering their CDs. My siblings will instantly break into smiles at the mention of the phrase "Osibisa - crisscross rythyms that explode with happiness" and then they'll repeat the line "we gonna start this happy vibes right from the root, and the root is early one morning in the heart of Africa." If you like earlier Santana, I'm pretty sure you'll like this - it's different, more African with a twist of Caribbean - but most of all it is just fun.

5 out of 5 stars Osibisa from Africa.......2005-07-18

One night in 1970 lying in my bed inside my psychedelic room listening to my Panasonic/Quadraphonic (forerunner of the surround sound today) component set. I heard on the FM radio station the complete two albums "Osibisa/Woyaya", I was so impressed with their music that the following day I ran to the store to buy both albums! At the time the Santana band was my favorite band. However, Osibisa with their unique African sound became another favorite band of mine. The percussion and the rhythms make you feel you are in Africa. Today I still collect their CD's and listen to the music that once brought the savage out of me; I'll see you later bwanna!

    5 out of 5 stars Mottsibisa.......2004-07-23

'Osibisa' was formed in London, England in 1969 by a multi-racial group of musicians; all with the same interests in music. The nucleus of the band was from Ghana, others, like the unbelievable guitarist Wendell Richardson, came from Antigua; the bass player who was simply known as Spartacus (I'm Spartacus!) was from Grenada; the keyboard player from Trinidad; and the saxophonist was from Nigeria. However, what they all had in common was great musical rhythm, enthusiasm, and ability. Their music was borrowed from Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, African based drum music, Rock, Pop, and Latin Groove, to create quite an original sound.

In Ghanaian 'Osibisa' means 'criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness'. Now, how one word can say all that I do not know, but that is exactly how the music sounds, and they are the very words that introduce the first song on this, Osibisa's first, album aptly titled "Dawn".

Like a breath of fresh air, Osibisa's music first came to prominence with the release of their first single "Music for Gong Gong'', included here on their first album, which was released at the tail end of 1970. It is a piece of music that will get even the most conservative of souls out boogieing on the dance floor. So it was great expectations when their first album was released in the early days of 1971 and the boys did not disappoint, arriving as it did when Prog-Rock was in its heyday. Each of these percussive driven songs blew away all the pretensions of those serious minded twiddlers in the likes of Yes, King Crimson, etc. Osibisa's unbridled enthusiasm was so infectious, you could not help but be dragged along by the sheer exuberance of it all.

Although Osibisa's main strength was in their live concerts, they could also drum up a storm (quite literally) in the studio. Nobody at the time could have realized how influential their music was going to be in years ahead. Osibisa today is still known as the Godfather of 'World Music', and the effect of their big hit single "Sunshine Day" (1975) was to change the disco scene for ever. But this, their first album, was to set the template of the Osibisa sound for eternity. The band is still going today, albeit with only two of the seven original members left, which actually is not bad by today's standards considering that the band is now in their 35th year.

Many of the songs on this collection are still in the band's live repertoire today. Like all good albums, the songs on this set play like a live concert. Opener "Dawn", which begins with the immortal translation of Osibisa, builds on a rhythm of percussion until giving way to let the individual soloist bring the song to a rousing conclusion - some seven and a half minutes later. You then get five other songs of criss-cross rhythms before being brought to a riotous climax by "Think About The People".

When a band starts off its career with such a strong album, it is often difficult to keep up the standards set by its debut (especially with an ever changing line-up - Wendell Richardson, the band?s simply stunning lead guitarist, was at one stage lured away by British rockers "Free"). So it is perhaps true to say that Osibisa's studio output has been a little patchy since then, although their live concerts have never been short of marvelous, always led by Teddy Osei out front on drums, sax, fluttering flute, and vocals. This, their first album, is nothing short of a diamond. A must buy for anybody who likes a shot of fun with their music.

4 out of 5 stars Just as I remembered it........2007-05-10

Though it is now a little dated, this CD has held up well. It's still exciting, and it was done without all of today's technology!

5 out of 5 stars Blast From The Past.......2005-12-21

Normally when I think of "World Music" I want to stick my finger down my throat and gag, but in this case... I only bring this up because I have seen Osibisa classified in the World Music genre and I hate to categorize them that way, however accurate it may be.

I got this album in the early seventies because of the album cover alone. That was enough to pique my interest. The music was surely not what I expected but it has a groove to it that I liked. This album was especially good with heavy incense, a black light, and that cover done over in dayglo paint. The good old days!

I have not heard this or their first album in thirty years yet I can still remember the melody to Woyaya. I suppose if you are a World Music freak then this album is for you. They were original, and they were unique and there has never been anything quite like them since. The combination of Wendell Richardson and Teddy Osei had magic that still shines through today. To me, Osibisa is the exception to the rule and I highly recommend them even for rockers!

5 out of 5 stars "Back in time".......2005-10-26

This is an excellent music and is able to take you back in time to remember. Great experience, and is still able to make your heart beat faster.

5 out of 5 stars Better have good speakers.......2004-11-10

This is one CD that I use to test speakers. Fire up Survival, turn up the volume, if they can handle this, they are fine. Why you ask? Because this is meant to be played loud, and the bass will rattle a room. WARNING if you rent, don't try this at home. Beautiful 7, and the uplifting ending cut Woyaya make this a must have for world music fans.

      5 out of 5 stars BEYOND AWESOME!.......2004-05-27

This has got to be one of my all time favorite albums! I have been listening to it since my brother brought it home from his friends house after the album first came out. My brother's friend got it from his own brother who worked at a radio station so I think it was a promotional album. I still have the vinyl album. In fact,I was so impressed with not only the music but also the cover artwork that I had the flying elephant TATTOOED ON MY BACK!! I feel this is their best album but it has been quite awhile since I have heard any of their other music. The songs on this album have been stuck in my head for over 30 years and I never get tired of them. Another album that I would recommend is "Flaming Drums" by Olatunji. This album was made in 1962 on Columbia records. I bought it at a yard sale or used record store in 1969 or 1970[or there-abouts] and have been enjoying it ever since. I cannot wait to get them both on cd so I can enjoy them in my vehicles. Broaden your musical horizons and buy this music.

4 out of 5 stars Just So You Youngsters Know.......2004-12-10

Betty Everett passed away in 2001, not in the best shape financially because of the abject failure of idiots in her orbit who did not properly promote her talent. Her very best is on this package and I recommend it. And for the ubiquitous "A Music Fan" from the 4-11-2000 review, my best memory and information tells me it was Mickey and Sylvia, not Betty, who did "Love is Strange" (their signature song in fact) on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. You're welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of Betty Everett-Let It Be Me..............2003-08-14

I was looking for a song from the movie "Dirty Dancing" called "Love Is Strange" and when I discovered Betty Everett sang it I decided to buy her CD titled "Let It Be Me" and listen to more of her songs. I was not disappointed when the album arrived and I listened to it. There are many great songs on this CD: Some of them are sung in duet with Jerry Butler; one of them is the title song "Let It Be Me" (made it to #5 in the U.S. charts in 1964). While listening to the album, I heard another song that I'd heard in the movie "Mermaids" : "It's In His Kiss" (#6 in the U.S. 1964, #34 in the UK 1968).
There are songs of the pain that goes along with love lost. They include "Chained To A Memory," "Until You Were Gone," and "No Place To Hide."
I strongly endorse this CD. It's classy and smooth and evocative of a wonderful musical era. In my opinion, Betty Everett is as
talented (if perhaps not as well-known) as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and the Supremes, or Martha Reeves. I wholeheartedly give Best of Betty Everett -- Let It Be Me five stars!

      5 out of 5 stars Classic Material.......2001-08-29

I Really Enjoyed Her Work. Her voice puts so much Drive&Passion into the Music. The "Shoop,Shoop Song is a Timeless Classic. She is easily one of the most Underrated Artists Ever.this is a Solid Collection on a Talent that is Long Overdue.

5 out of 5 stars Betty gets down.......2001-06-03

If you're looking for an undiscovered gem, get a hold a Betty Everett "Best of" CD. "Let it be Me" was a song that was, well, I guess you'd call it my parents' courting song. So I grew up listening to it with a great deal of regularity and loved the way her voice worked with Jerry Butler's - much in the same way as Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell worked - magically. It was only when was much older that I realised that the same woman sung "The Shoop Shoop Song", along with "You're No Good", "It's Getting Mighty Crowded" "Hound Dog" & "Can't hear You no More". She has sort of been relegated to R&B obscurity along with great singers like Doris Troy, Anne Peebles & Gladys Horton from the Marvelettes, and a popular resurrection is long overdue!

I originally bought the CD "Soul Perfection Plus" and got hooked on Betty Harris. So I am trying to get everything available by her and now this CD is available. She really is the Lost Soul Queen. This CD has some of the same songs as the other CD, but I guess that's the price I've got to pay.
