What we're getting here is what we've come to expect from this talented songstress: pop arrangements of literate songs that deal with knotty relationships involving lovers, critics, and corporations. Mann co-wrote a song with Elvis Costello for the final 'Til Tuesday album, and it was an apt pairing. Like Costello at his best, Aimee is equal parts adroit and direct. A couplet like "I came back twice, now I'm the Anti-Christ" or "A thousand compromises don't add up to a single win" may be accompanied by something a little more to the point--"Don't you know you're a fucking freak in this world?" Mann and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion keep the songs pithy and punchy, bringing on guests like Juliana Hatfield (on the particularly intoxicating "You Could Make a Killing"), Suede alumni Bernard Butler, Michael Penn, Chris Difford, and Glenn Tilbrook for occasional adornment, but mostly maintain a hands-on approach. The result frequently recalls Abby Road-period Beatles, which isn't a bad source. --Steven Stolder

best aimee album.......2007-01-10
I consider this the best album of Aimee, each song is a story by itself, it is a masterwork; Long shot, Ray, That's just what you are and Amateur are my favorite..... I love this album...!!!
Worth buying........2007-01-04
With her strong emphasis on voice and unique lyrics, Aimee Mann's songs of depression and dysfunction are enough to brighten anyone's day. More upbeat and active than Mann's usual work-but with downers like Ray and Par for the Course mixed in-this album shows just how varied one singer can be. The long conclusions of a few songs can be a bit distracting, but it doesn't take away from her strong voice. An overall treat for any Aimee fan.
Irresistible.......2006-11-25
I was lucky enough to have worked on this record and it remains one of my favorites to date. The earnestness with which Aimee approaches her songwriting coupled with the nuanced and colorful touches by Jon Brion combined to give us a fantastic record full of tender sarcasm and pithy cynicism....it expresses a part of Aimee's quirky and intelligent self beautifully. I love this record and if you like music that makes you feel and think then yhou might too...'Amateur' is one of the most elegant and touching pop balladds ever.
My favourite album of all time.......2006-06-13
1. Longshot - 9/10 - Aimee Mann MUST have personally written this one for my ex boyfriend
2. Choice in the Matter - 10/10 - "Skip the cloak and dagger bit, don't you know we're sick of it?" haha
3. Sugarcoated - 10/10 - definitely the best song on this album. Anyone can relate to this song.
4. Could Make A Killing - 10/10 - this is the song that made me go out and buy the album in the first place
5. Superball - 11/10 - All I can say is 'WOW'
6. Amateur- 10/10 - I cried so many times over this song
7. All Over Now -10/10- Yet another one dedicated to my ex and I liked the superball reference at the end
8. Par For The Course - 8/10 - An okay favourite song
9. You're With Stupid Now - 9.5/10 - such a sad song
10. That's Just What You Are - 10/10 - Words never rang so true
11. Frankenstein - 11/10 - Great great lyrics
12. Ray - 7/10 - My least favourite song
13. It's Not Safe - A long but well done song

another mann masterpiece also delayed from the idiots that be behind the record labels.
they didn't hear that "hit single for the radio", and shelved
this cd. however, it saw the light of day 2 yes. later.
the whole album is mann's horrible experience with producing
and making a record with dumbasses behind the hit factory.
excellent songs, great songwriting style. the song
"amateur" is in the gwyneth paltrow film,"sliding doors"

Album Description
K'naan, former refugee, now based in Toronto makes music that is a mixture of hip hop, African beats and world music intertwined - combining African drums, chants, handclaps, guitars and organic instrumentation sets this album outside the hip hop herd. K'naan creates music with a message. Leaving Somalia at the age of thirteen on what turned out to be the last commercial flight ever to do so, amidst a crumbling society and the end to this day of any form of central government K'naan carried with him a very strong sense of purpose as well as his amazing lyrical gift, which has made him a beacon for other artists a well as those dedicated to global change. Canada only release! With his unique voice and truly authentic style, K'naan brings an enormous dose of realness and urgency to the hip-hop world in a time when people are desperate for it. From a personal and cultural history rooted in poetry (being the grandson of one of Somalia's most famous poets), K'naan widens the traditional hip-hop perspective. Discovered and produced by Track & Field, same producers that discovered and produced Nelly Furtado, Dusty Foot Philosopher is comprised of 18 total tracks including 'Smile', 'My Old Home', 'In The Beginning', 'Voices In My Head', 'Wash It Down', 'Hoobaale', 'Rap Gets Jealous' and more. BMG. 2005.
Album Details
Negotiating his Way Forcefully Through a Gritty Sandstorm of Spoken-word and African Instrumental Interludes, K'naan Brings Us a Collection of Funky, Original Backgrounds Nearly as Weighty as the Cautionary Words that Float above Them. In his Liner Notes, K'naan Recounts a Nearly Fatal Incident Involving a Live Grenade which He and a Couple of his School Friends Discovered in their Classroom in Mogadishu, Somalia. While Playing with the Mysterious Object, which Initially Looked Like a Potato, the Grenade's Pin Slipped. Throwing it as Fast and as Far as He Could, the Destructive Object Lay to Ruin Much of the Empty Building. Thankfully, No One was Hurt. Then Only Ten Years Old, K'naan (Whose Name Means "The Traveller" in Somalian) Credits that Event as the Watershed Moment which Led Him to Become a Writer.

Addictive and thought-provoking.......2007-07-07
Everyone will have their own opinion, but in my opinion (which is the best! : * ) this is the best CD I've purchased in a long time. If you like Arrested Development, Donnie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie or anybody who's not just singing or rapping for the sake of filling airtime, you'll love it. In The Beginning makes me dance, Hoobaale makes my think and sing at the same time, and What's Hardcore makes me laugh at the stupidity of mainstream hip-hop "gangstas". I love it.
Phenominal.......2006-12-16
I generally listen to reggae and have recently gotten into more Hip-hop and Rap. So, while I may not have the best perspective on this type of music, I will put it simply: this album blew me away. I really can't put my finger on it, but K'naan is fantastic. He is clever, angry, poetic, lyrical, and contemplative all at the same time. Besides the rythims, beats, etc., which are great, K'naan is able to give the listener a picture of whatever he's rhyming about, literally a picture in your mind. And, this is fundementally positive rap, hard to find no doubt, and it also makes you want to stand up a move around. I recommend this album to any fan of music, and I anxiously await K'naan's sophmore attempt.
Refreshing, innovative, dynamic.......2006-11-27
I normally don't go for hip hop and I hardly ever give 5 stars, but quality trumps genre any day, and this is some great stuff. Musically influenced by hip hop beats and his native Somalia, he manages to keep them successfully distinct. When he does merge them, it is with skill and style and wit. Too often merged styles end up sounding muddy, but not here.
The lyrics are poetic. He deals with some very serious subjects, but manages to inject humour and pragmatism without cheapening the message.
Finally, the album works well as a whole, not just a collection of songs, though you'll probably want to add some singles to your playlists.
Enjoy!
Masterfull.......2006-10-19
I had a chance to see K'naan at the Breedlove Tour with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche and Jean Grey and let me tell you he rocked the show. I had the chance to meet him after the show as he was selling his beautiful album at the back of the Fillmore in Denver and what a guy. Humble, kind, very down to earth. His music expresses the hardships of leaving his homeland and the unimaginable pain of living in modern day Somalia. His music expresses the frustration and anger about his homeland but also brings hope about the future, as well as awareness as most people especially in the U.S. have no idea what is going on over there because CNN and other corporate media just cover it as a rogue state. K'naan puts the human element in his music and expresses it beautifully. Great all around CD, original beats, lyrics, and well put together. Keep on fighting K'naan wherever you are.
Overwhelmingly Beautiful and Poetic!.......2006-10-04
I'm an East African who grew up right over the border from Somalia and even then, I've never heard anyone say anything about Somalia other than rehashing CNN's point of view. It was always just a "messed up" place and nothing else. Finally this young brother speaks with such passion about the life and people that LIVE there...despite the turmoil and everything else there is LIFE and LOVE and K'Naan does such a phenomenal job getting that across. Listening to his tracks you can feel the pain, the frusteration, the hope...everything. He also acknowledges that just because he's no longer in a war-torn country doesn't automatically mean that life is great, a thought rarely discussed when it comes to refugees. It's often assumed and believed that we've done them all a great huge favor by removing them from their country...and while it's obviously better not to live under the fear of death, there's also the fact that generally people prefer to live in their home surroundings with the people they love and are familiar with. Migration, even to the lands of milk and honey in the west, is a HUGE sacrifice. Bravo K'Naan! This CD is a major contribution to Africa's history and to the masses whose thoughts and feelings are rarely acknowledged in an affirming an unbiased manner. An ESSENTIAL piece to anyone's library!

Dreams and Soul Traveling.......2007-02-16
Love Dreams by that master of funk Gary Wilson.....
Soul Traveling on volume two by Gary buzzes the breeze!!!!!!!!!
Nothing Like This.......2007-01-22
Descriptors of the tracks from these artists:
Oh No - a cool breeze with a phat beat; reminiscing
Guilty Simpson - tough; regarding the daily struggle
Madlib - groovy; scratchy mcscratch; can you say "layed back, but biting, battle rap?"
Koushik - tranceish; far more rhythmic than trance and I like it
J Dilla (RIP) - this song makes me feel that music is my life and J Dilla is the sensei on my path to enlightenment of music
James Pants - crazy and I like it; "clap your hands, stomp your feet"; catchy
MadVillain - as usual MadVillain is mysterious, poetic, Doomish, Libish (I just made those words up for this review)
Georgia Anne Muldrow - simply a joy; couldn't have been titled better
MED - no more reminiscing, we're in the here and now; what does it take to be a quality rapper, let's find out
Dudley Perkins - Dudley is the most unique vocal artist of our day; a little of all the classic singers r&b and soul and of course a dash of contemporary street knowledge and reverence
Percee P, Quasimoto - Lord Quas goes with anyone, but Percee compliments his vocal most; heart of the battle
Jaylib - i think this and the first Dilla track stand out as the most transcendent on the album; i hear the sirens and I love it
J-Rocc - who wants drama? not me; i feel like i'm on a car chase with this track; can't tell if i'm following or leading?
Roc "C" - i've always had a special place in my heart for perseverance songs; these are the steps and the trip ups that make life worth living
Gary Wilson - bicca-ch bicca-ch; 70's groove at it's finest; great song to ufck to ;)
Pure Essence - the mothership has not left the building; very cosmic; these tracks are titled well
Aloe Blacc - very African rhythms; what direction will we take next?
Baron Zen - Peanut Butter Wolf can take any genre and make it his own; droning lyrics; works with the track
Young Jazz Rebels - so glad to have these eclectic tracks on an [adult swim] album;that Stones Throw is linked to artists like this is amazing; soft and emotional drumming; seemingly a drum circle and flute
Overall Rating Through the Roof!

the dvd is worth the price alone, awesome doom performance,
really good qualtity ,
and the selections are exactly what ST has to offer.
get this while its still artound .. trust me..
It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad.......2007-01-04
The last third of 'Chrome Children' leaves a bit to be desired, but c'mon. It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad and search out the gems.
Far as I'm concerned, there are plenty of those here, from Oh No's frantic-elevator-music 'Oh Zone' to Madlib's woozy-nasal 'Take It Back,' where J. Dilla crafts a beat that could easily have been an outtake from the latest Quasimoto album. Koushik's 'None in Mind' has a nice Bollywood/Blaxploitation vibe, and James Pants' 'Do a Couple of Things' just goes the straight blaxploitation route.
Roc C puts down a few solid verses on the Oh No-produced 'Movin,' MED does the same over Madlib's 'All I Know,' and 'Monkey Suite' should have just about everyone salivating for the next Madvillain album.
I'm not sure what the last few songs are all about, though. I mean, they're alright, but I'm not sure why they're on this record. They don't really fit with the first 14 songs. But oh well. I'll take 'em.
The true appeal of this for me was the companion DVD, which features performances at a Stones Throw show in Texas from MED, Percee P, Madlib and MF Doom. Doom's performance of 'Rhymes Like Dimes' alone is worth the price of admission.
And, of course, Guilty Simpson's 'Clap Your Hands,' on the CD, has the best one-liner I've heard in a while: 'I don't care who y'all rollin' with/'Cause a real ***** don't need sponsorship.'

"Incredible" -Dave Lombardo. -One of the best Thrash albums ever!.......2005-09-02
It is hard to think it has already been twenty years since this album came out but when this came out in the Summer of 1985 (around July) it made quite the splash. I still have the original vinyl record that has the sticker on it with the above quote from Dave Lombardo, an early supporter of D.R.I. and this album came out a couple months before "Hell Awaits" and before S.O.D.'s "Speak English or Die". This review is long, but that is the least this album deserves.
But my do times change. Most people today either don't know or have some distain for D.R.I. Just shows you how foolish the kids who run the scene are these days. But without this band who influenced (directly or indirectly) legions of other bands, where would we be? Thrash would sound like Judas Priest on steroids. We also wouldn't have Death Metal or Grindcore. Want names of the influenced? How about Kreator, Dark Angel, Slayer (of course), S.O.D., Nuclear Assault, Vio-lence, Cryptic Slaughter, Hirax, even Napalm Death, to name just of few in the D.R.I. mold.
What "Dealing with It" represents is a slight transition from their previous 1983 effort titled "The Dirty Rotten LP". That album earned them the title of "Fastest band in the world" which was totally true for years afterword despite what one reviewer thinks of a bad MA band that wasn't faster. That '83 LP is as good as this one but has one major difference, the song writing isn't as good as it is on "Dealing With It". The '83 LP goes from sludgy slow to insanely fast almost effortlessy. That idea is preserved here but the transitions in speed aren't as drastic. In '84 we had the "Violent Pacification" EP with heavier sounds guitars and a lot of palm muting. "Dealing With It" takes all these ideas a step further by remaking some of the old songs with heavy double-bass parts, sludgier guitars and thunderous bass lines, and all of this is kept together by the most inoffensive/atonal vocalist in the genre: Kurt Brecht. The songs on this album have so much range that it makes it quite easy to listen to start to finish. There are the hardcore inspired anthems like "I'd Rather be Sleeping" to the longer songs like the classic chugga-chugga rant "Nursing Home Blues".
Spike Cassidy does a marvelous job on the guitars, the bass is sometimes good sometimes bad but this was because Josh Pappe was in rehab for a drug problem so Cassidy and Mikey Offender had to record the bass lines. The vocals are Dirty...Rotten...and therefore good. The drumming is excellent and while I liked Eric Brecht, the first drummer who would go on to play with Hirax and later with Chuck Schuldiner's band Death, Felix Griffin does a marvelous job. On some of the songs his drumming is better than others, but on the tracks where he wrote the drum lines they are awesome. While people drool over Lombardo, Hoglan, Benante, and Bostaph, Griffin is an underrated drummer. From a drummer's perspective, compared to what other people were doing at the time, in between the bashing of the cymbals and the blast beats he plays some interesting swing and jazz lines occasionally on the ride, and triplets and accents on the bass drums. He was ahead of his time, and frankly one of my favorite drummers from this genre.
The only draw back to this album is the production is terrible. They didn't command too much of a budget in those days so the album sounds very very raw. Sometimes you can't even hear the bass drum at all or the snare. This needs to have a 24-bit digital remastering.
This is a good place to start with the D.R.I. catalogue and while I like their earlier and later stuff up 'til 'Definition', this remains the undisputed classic of their catalogue. The best thing about D.R.I. is you can still see them live for like $10. Can't say the same of Megadeth, Slayer or Anthrax. 5,000,000 stars...if that was possible.
hands down, the best thrash record ever recorded. .......2005-08-25
This record is basically a rehashed DIRTY ROTTEN ep (with a few new tricks, and new songs to match). The change the band, and the rerecorded songs, went under within a period of 3 years is mind-blowing and dwarfs their previous studio efforts (not to mention any effort they would make in the future).
DRep was the fastest hardcore record released in its time frame (yes, i'm aware of The Neos, Siege, Koro, Negative FX, Mob47 and anything you could throw at me) but DEALING WITH IT is angrier, tighter, and just plain better...plus, you can see that they've finally learned how to play. They kept it short, sweet, and used the heavy shreds as a garnish rather then a main ingredient (which they should have kept doing).
When I think of THRASH, I think of this record before I think of the crossover acts of the mid/late 80s (dri included) and before I think of the classics that paved the way. DRI is the flagship thrash unit and DEALING WITH IT is the best record of the genre.
easily in the top ten greatest hardcore records ever released.
Masterpeice!.......2005-04-30
If you don't think this is a masterpiece then you should be ashamed of yourself...ASHAMED!
This makes Tim Timmy's "Masterpeice" list!

Top Notch Hardcore-Thrash.......2005-03-18
When D.R.I.'s "Dealing With It" came out in 1985, very few people within the metal community have ever heard of them. Some of their early champions, after all, were metalheads, like SLAYER's Dave Lombardo. So, after hearing such praise from some of Thrash Metal's most respected drummers, I proceeded to buy the album. Boy, was I in for a RIDE! This had to be the fastest, dirtiest album I have EVER heard up to that point. It wasn't necessarily "heavy" (although, it actually is, compared to what's being paraded as 'punk' these days!), but it sounds, even to this day, mercilessly FAST....and CATCHY! Yep, the songs, no matter how fast they are, stick in your head: "I Don't Need Society", "Snap", "Marriage", Reaganomics, "Mad Man", Couch Slouch", "Equal People"...the song list goes on (the album has 25 songs! A true 'rarity' at the time!). The production is actually quite clear; you can hear every instrument...it's not just a blast noise. The drumming of Felix is beyond human. Few HC drummers had this manic flair for lightning fast rolls played with surgical precision. The vocals of Kurt Brecht must have been the FASTEST ever. Not even grindcore kings NAPALM DEATH sang THIS fast! Their lyrics were just a blur, while D.R.I.'s lyrics can actually be followed, albeit, at unbelievable speeds. The guitar sounds of Spike are predating the hardcore-metal crossover. D.R.I. were one of the original crossover bands (bands that mixed punk and metal alike), although most of "Dealing With It" resides in the "punk" side of things. It wasn't until the next album (the aptly titled, "Crossover") that the band embraced the metal sound dearly. "Dealing With It" must be seen as a milestone for the punk genre. It's an album that shows an evolutory stage within the punk genre and succeeds at it. If you really wish to hear what a true CROSSOVER band sounds like, then THIS is the album you've been waiting to hear!

You won't be dissapointed, unless you just love those boy bands they pass off as punk rock nowadays, then again it might be refreshing like sticking your finger in a wall socket. The lyrics and music are amazing, it has an incredibly real and simple feel to it. For me, this CD has the same timeless feel as Guns n' Rose's Appetite for destruction, Sublime's self titled album or Suicidal Tendencies' debut. I originally purchased the "wax" version of this album back in the day, and later grabbed the CD when it was available. With lyrics like these below, it's easy to see why this is a must have piece of punk rock history.
I don't need society
"Your numbers up you have to go
The system say's "I told you so"
Stocked in a train like a truckload of cattle
Sent off to slaughter in a useless battle
Thousands of us sent off to die
Never really knowing why
F*** the system they can have me
I don't need society"
Karma
"In someone's bathroom, turning blue, puking green
You're senile, senile at seventeen
Scars on your brain from drinking beer and smoking weed
Another acid tab, another shot of speed
Good karma, bad karma
You'll get what you deserve
There is good and evil
You've got a lot to learn
There's no lie, only truth
In reality"

Nice B-sides.......2005-12-02
This is NOT a real Dinosaur JR album but a new song and some B-sides. It's still fun to get though for this price. The title track and the live tracks are the best songs, but the other songs (mostly the acoustic Quicksand) are worth getting the CD for.
It's cool with me........2004-08-09
This release is actually just one new track and 7 b-sides, but still good stuff. It's fairly diverse too, with a few rockers, a few more acoustic-based songs, and 2 live tracks. "Whatever's Cool With Me" is a good song, and typical for the time. The slower tracks, and the reason I keep this, are "Sideways" and the cover of "Quicksand", both are great. The rest are all decent. This is a good find for the real fan, but it's not as essential as "Green Mind" or "Where You Been".
Hippy Alt Rock Rules!.......2003-11-20
Very nice record. I really enjoyed the whole album except for the last two live tracks (which were reeeaaallly drawn out despite J's excellent guitar playing). I prefer the more acoustic songs to the more drawn-out electric ones. Sideways is very beautiful, and so is Quicksand. I loved the evil-sounding bass and punkness in The Little Baby, though.
Three Releases in 1991 J masics is certainly a busy man........2003-05-22
This isnt much of a dinosaur jr cd only about 4 new songs and two live songs. My fave would be pebbles and weeds that song sounds a bit like nirvana only pebbles and weeds has good guitaring, another is quicksand a David Bowie Cover song in which J sounds like hes saying "dont belive in yourself", another is whatevers cool with me the song WCWM is a cool song, antoher is the little baby, uh that song is kinda weird you cant tell what j is saying and there is always some screaming in the background oh ya and i cant forget sideways in which that song was made for a movie and that whole movie soundtrack is j mascis and another dude. Then there is two cool live songs thumb is from green mind and keep the glove is from the fossils cd. Thumb was amazing, the best ive heard J play his guitar and keep the glove didnt interest me really. Buy it if you want to.
Unrealized Jewel.......2003-04-13
I went for a long time not knowing that this 8 song compilation had the magnitude that it truely does. The live tracks are great and show full spirit from the band. "Quicksand" is a great homage to David Bowie (in Mascis's own way) and "Sideways" sounds as if taken straight from the previous album, "Green Mind". It has the sheer beauty and brilliance as "Thumb" and "Flying Cloud" from the album. This release definately has its points as being an unrealized jewel from Mascis.

The Sound Providers' production team of Soulo and DJ J-Skills has shown a love for jazz aesthetics throughout the group's career, but on An Evening with the Sound Providers, they've managed to create music of such soothing beauty that it's impossibly easy to melt into the album's hepcat vibe. Just to let their tracks shine, a full third of the songs here are purely instrumental, few better than the playful "Autumns Evening Breeze" or "Jazz at the Cove," a melancholy but sublime blend of subtle bass lines and sparkling piano chords. Elsewhere, fellow undergrounders like Asheru ("For Old Time's Sake"), Little Brother ("Braggin' and Boastin'"), and Maspyke ("The Throwback") join the soiree. While other artists may only want to tear up the club, San Diego's Sound Providers retune your state of mind with a mood as cool and deep as the Pacific. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
With the original emcee gone in search of a solo career, the now two-man group hit the lab and did not emerge until recently. The end result is the highly anticipated, 21-track debut album which features instrumentals by the duo, and guest appearances from some of their favorite artists including Little Brother (ABB Records), Asheru of Unspoken Heard (7 Heads), and Maspyke. "We are big fans of all of the artists featured on the album," says Jason Skills. "It's nice to hear your favorite emcees on your tracks. It takes the music to a place that you might not normally take it." A portion of the album was recorded by the artists' who made special guest appearances on it with the exception of The Procussions track, "5 Minutes." That song was recorded at a well-known studio in Los Angeles where Jason is a freelance engineer. "We wanted to cut the vocals for `5 Minutes' so I waited for a session to get done early, called The Procussions, snuck them in and hooked it up! while none of the other engineers were around," said Jason. "We knocked out the whole thing in one night!" The remaining tracks on the album, mainly the instrumentals and interludes, were recorded at both Soulo and Jason's respective studios.
Part hip-hop, part jazz, the duo draw from the music that influenced them while growing up to create a soulful vibe infused with bebop, funk, and everything in between.

one of my fav albums.......2006-10-18
First came across SP on this underground radio stream and had to get their music. Got it and it continues to be one of my fav group to this day. Their music is more of a jazz/hip hop mix but they pull it off really well. Really chill music that helps you relax or uplift your mood. Great for whenever you need to relax, calm down, or a rainy day. I recommend this album to anyone.
Not what I was expecting but still a dope album.......2005-11-05
I picked this up at the local record store after I saw that it had Asheru on one of the tracks I popped it in my CD player in the car and as I was skimming through the tracks I noticed that over half of the album was instrumentals and only a small fraction of the beats had actual rapping. At first I was dissapointed but the instrumentals are done so well on this disc that they quickly grew on me and this CD has now reached a classic status with me like few other albums do. The music is a mixture of Pete Rock era Funk and jazz and soulful moody sound scapes that are perfect for listening to on a rainy day. The MCs are all on point and all have some very intereting and dope lines for you to listen to repeatedly I was so happy After hearing this album it is the perfect mixture of Hiphop and jazz styles it makes the perfect soundtrack for relaxing around the house or cruising in your ride. SP Have not put anything out for a minute, I hope that we see something from them in the near future Because we definitely need more talented hard working crews like this rocking the tables and the mic. P.S. If you are a fan of the sound providers be sure to check out the new Procussions album "As Iron Sharpens Iron"
Classic!!!.......2005-10-14
Dope album, beats are sick Nice instrumentals if you like to freestyle. Lyrics are tight featuring some dope mc's Little brother, Asheru, Maspyke. Definite buy

Back to the roots of hiphop.......2004-08-27
The soundproviders, where do I start? This is THE ALBUM if you love those boom bap beats 'n jazzy vibes, that gives you the real hiphop feeling back from back in the days when pete rock,CL Smooth, De La Soul, ATCQ were doing there thing.
With 21 songs on it, 7 of them are skits with lovely beats on the background, another 7 are instrumentals with the same recept (with scratches and cuts in it), and another 7 songs are collaborations with emcees that are in my opinion very talented rappers who don't have to speak about bling bling, ca$h, cars and ho's to rap. ALL the songs on the album are great! I can tell you that it's not only the 5 samples that sounds great. The entire album includes that perfect music.
The album includes 59:30 minutes of pure pleasure music!
If there is coming up a spontaneous smile on your face when you here a boom bap beat show up after a little intro, hearing talented emcees over perfect beats, you HAVE TO buy this album. I think this is the best album that is released in 2004 so far.

Album Description
One of the most eagerly-awaited albums of the year, combining the talents of the famous LA rapper ACEYALONE with the acclaimed Philly producer, RJD2. "Magnificent City" creates a complex and multi-layered journey through soundscapes. The album runs the gamut from straight party-cuts to poetic metaphorical lyrics, all the while combining catchy rhymes with top-notch production. A definitive Aceyalone album!
Customer Reviews:
standard release by hip hop greats............2006-07-27
I think that this album is great in some ways, and yet falls short in others. Ace and RJ are amazing artists in their own rights, and together on an album they shine bright. But what falls short is sometimes songs get repetitive. Mostly the lyrics and sometimes the beats. The hooks range from somewhat tight to just plain annoying. This is a sort of solid release that everyone should check out because it is tight, but don't expect anything groundbreaking. Most of the songs have a commercial feel to them, as I am not an Ace fan I do not have a grasp of what his other albums sound like. I am a huge fan of RJ and these beats on this album are tight, but don't really compare to his solo stuff or Soul Position.
Some good moments, but falls short.......2006-04-08
Magnificent City Score: 3.5/5
Aceyalone and RJD2 are both talented artists. Aceyalone has the ability to shine in his lyrics, and RJD2 almost always burns it up with unique beats. Magnificent City definitely has style and excellent beats, but as great as it sounds, I hate to say that it has it's pitfalls.
1. All For U: RJD2 gives one hell of a beat here, Aceyalone delivers a so/so hook and decent lyrics. Fun song. 4/5
2. Fire: RJD2 delivers a seventies disco reminiscent beat and Aceyalone has a strong delivery, with decent lyrics. Good song, although the beat gets a bit repetitive after 3-4 plays. 4.5/5
3. Cornbread, Eddie & Me: Again, RJD2 delivers, and this time Aceyalone has a powerful delivery with equally powerful lyrics. 5/5
4. MOOORE: RJD2 falls short on this beat, it gets plain out annoying, but it's Aceyalone's repetitive and annoying chants of "MOoore moore more more more" are silly. Skip this track 1/5
5. Supahero: The beat has a cool vibe at first, but gets old. Aceyalone has a strong delivery, but the lyrics aren't very good. It's a decent song, worth listening to a few times. 3/5
6. High Lights: Aceyalone's tribute to drugs, fun beat, creative lyrics, a decent listen. 3.5/5
7. Disconnected: Good beat by RJD2, Aceyalone's lyrics are right on, but it gets repititive after a while. Still a fun listen. 4.5/5
8. Caged Bird: The darn bells on this beat get so repetitive that I only listen to the first 30 seconds of this song. Too bad too- the lyrics on this song are excellent. 3.5/5
9. Solomon Jones: Bouncy beat with some gunshots and other miscallaneous sounds to give you a Wild West bar feel. A storytelling song that isn't excellent, but a fun listen nonetheless. 4/5
10. A Sunday Mystery: just music, listen to it, it's quite soothing. 4/5
11. Junior: A very fun beat by RJD2, another storytelling song, well done and fun. Good delivery, a song that almost was perfect. 4.5/5
12. Heaven: A strong guitar beat with an equally strong hook, a decent song with a pretty good lyrics. Gets old quick though. 4/5
13. Here & Now: Probably the best song on the CD. Aceyalone really shines on this one, with a powerful delivery and excellent lyrics. The beat has some sampled strings and some vocals that accent Aceyalone very well. A good listen. 5/5
14. A Beautiful Mine: Personally I didn't like this beat that much, but it's still a solid job. Aceyalone really comes through with his lyrical prowess and delivery. 5/5
Overall, I enjoyed this CD, but it could have been much better. A fun listen, but where are the clever lyrics?
Aceyalone + RJD2.......2006-03-16
Aceyalone has let me down a lot recently in terms of releases. He hasn't had a consistently good album for quite awhile.
I loved him about ten years ago, but he's slowly slipped since. Given that, I only picked "Magnificent City" because it was produced by RJD2. RJD2's beats are pretty good throughout this album, as you would expect.
Aceyalone seems to have aged a bit and isn't quite as on-point as he used to be. There are some really stellar songs on here, but then there are some so-so songs. It's about 50-50 in terms of good vs. average.
For example, the album starts out really strong with the first two songs, but then drops at the next two songs. So I found it inconsistent.
"Magnificent City" could have easily been a 5-star classic, but it came up a little short. 3.5 stars.
Underground Disciples.......2006-03-09
Aceyalone and RJD2 are definately not novice when it comes to the underground sound. They surely ink out their own individual persona's on this project without compromising their unique/distinct abilities. What I tend to appreciate from the underground sound is the lyrical messages that sometimes get overlooked because of a rush to judgement or simply hype. This project is full of those type of messages, life lessons which I attempt to digest more thoroughly during each listening session because this underground music is purposefull. Get this one for your inspection, reflection, recollection; inspire your direction.
Good for a nice lightweight Day.......2006-03-09
This album I feel like has a lightweight feel to it. It is atmospheric and has some atmospheric sounds produced by RJD2 it is not a bad album but it could have been better. He does not go on a real huge Lyrical Joyride nore our the beats soundscapes but it does provide some entertainment value to it as at times it can sound a little fluffy and Harpish. If I were to download several sons I would choose:Supahero, A Beautiful
Mine and Heaven you will not be blown away but it's good stuff.

Cramps - 'Date With Elvis' (Restless Records) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-04-06
Originally released in 1986,as this was their fifth 'actual' record(is that all?).Either way,'Date With Elvis' showcases some great rockin' psychobilly for your listening pleasure.Just about every track here kicks ass, like the swinging "The Hot Pearl Snatch","What's Inside A Girl?","Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?","Cornfed Dames"(forgot all about this superb cut),the boot-stompin' "Chicken" and "Aloha From Hell".As with most Cramps releases,'Date...' is most worth repeated spins.Simply a must-have.
Baby, you can't fail........2006-02-21
This album features the Cramps usual brand of rockabilly influenced punk (or punk influenced rockabilly), with a bit of surf music tossed in this time. This is one of the Cramps better albums. A lot of fun, raunchy songs like the classic "Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?". It even includes a rare lead vocal by Poison Ivy on "Get Off the Road". A must get for Cramps fans.
Kicks you in the head.......2001-07-17
The cramps are truly original and this album is one of their best. Lux Interior does his best psychotic Elvis imitaion on tracks like "Can Your ... Do The Dog?" and the opening track features Poison Ivy's vibrato pulsing country blues licks. All this and no bass player just pure garage rockabilly punk that kicks you in the head. The lyrics will make you laugh too.
Simply the best rock and roll album to be ever recorded........1998-12-24
The Cramps have shown the world that they have been a force to reckon with over the last 20 years. With every album their intensity becomes stronger, but most of all more sick. That to me is the true spirit of rock and roll! A date with Elvis is my personal fave. Who can forget the classics such as "Can your pussy do the dog?", and Hot Pearl snatch." The Cramps are the only band that I can think of right a-way that have remained true to their rock and roll roots and vision. Having met Lux, Ivy, Slim and Harry I must say they have a very intoxicating presence, but most of all are very kind people. (They always put me on the guest list!!!). Buy this album!!!! AllenGator

Important to the future of rock n roll..........2004-12-13
I recommend this spoken word book on CD to anyone who likes punk music. What is contained on it is a diary of Henry Rollins during his Black Flag years. Lots of tour stories, some that will make you roll on the floor laughing and others that will make you think "holy %^$#." I read the book when I was 15 and I think it actually changed my life. The way Henry describes what he was feeling during these insane punk shows is awesome. He doesn't hold anything back here. Its all there to be judged and he doesn't care...you can tell.
He spits in some guy's face because the guy says it would be an honor, then Henry grabs him up and tells him next time someone does that to him, break his jaw. It is just classic Rollins. And he really tells it well.
The reason that this documentation is important is because this era of music is gone. It is dead. Real rock and roll, or "punk," is a legend now...and no I'm not talking about Good Charlotte. Kids have no idea what bands like The Misfits, Metallica, The Stones, and Black Flag went through to get signed or to "make it." It wasn't MTV. It wasn't the radio. It wasn't having a relative in the business...it was pure energy and real drive. What it was was hard work. Very hard work.
Got a son or nephew in a band?? BUY THIS FOR HIM. He will respect you for life.
I Couldn't turn it off!!.......2004-06-10
This CD is Amazing, and Disturbing at the same time. I loved it. if you are a musician, Then Buy this. If you are not a musician, Still Buy it.
Disc one is a lot more light hearted and entertaining, in a way,
He talks about Joining the band, Recording the Damaged LP and going on tour and playing with great bands like the Damned, Flipper, Dead Kennedys, and the Misfits, its great to hear those stories, he also talks about a lot of bad stuff that happened on the European tour, which was also great and educational, Its hard to believe that a band like Black Flag that is so Respected now days got kicked around and Harassed and Screwed over so much back then. Lots of Skinhead, and Poser Stories, pretty scary stuff.
The thing I like about Henry Rollins so much is that he Says Exactly what I feel, like he takes the words right out of my mouth, I know it sounds Cheesy but its true, the way he describes and thinks about 99% of people and the "Punkers" and "Posers", and "Macho people" who think they are tough, and just all the B.S. you have to put up with.
its 100% right, just listen to this CD, youll know what I'm talking about.
Disc Two, on the other hand is very depressing and Disturbing,
it is great though. it really shows you the dark side of touring, and thats pretty much the whole vibe of disc two.
just miserable and rough.
I couldn't stop listening to it, it was like heroin or something. Great CD.
The wisdom and experiances of one man in a band.......2004-03-30
Henry Rollins is, and I don't say this often but I will here, an inspiration to me. While I don't agree or like everything he says on some topics, he has taught me many things through his spoken word performances. One of them, (and thats perhaps why I love the SWEATBOX collection of stories) is that weakness is stupid and that everyone should try to destroy what is weak in their lives (mine is lazyness and I am working on it). GET IN THE VAN has Hank telling the important events in his life just before joining and during his time with the band Black Flag.
It's quite a ride as Hank will tell how he as a manager schmoe in an ice cream store gets to meet and audition for the band Black Flag. Hank joins and quickly sees his life go upside down. The cops aren't always the good guys, more often or not their in his and the bands face for no reason other then to flaunt authority. When it's not the cops here in the states, it's the skinheads overseas that give them problems and fights. Food wasn't always a gaurentee (one of the roadies for a while lived on dogfood and bread). Equipment and money is stolen by junkies, cars break down or are vandalized, and even other bands hassle them. Hardly glorious at all for a band.
Hank at times gets bleak with his writings about how he doens't need anybody or anything and how cold the world is. Hearing him recite the stories of his younger self is pretty cool and he doesn't over enphasize hardly any of it.
Thats where part of the problem is in the recording. Hank for the most part of the CD's (which are nearly 2 and a half hours together) merely recites from his notes. Rarely does he emote or "get into it" here and sounds like a bland cipher and thats too bad.
Another caveat is in the way the material is presented. Both CDs have only 1 track and there both about 77 minutes. If you gotta stop it, or bump your palyer or anything, you have to start all over again and shuffle through what you've already heard. Hanks (...)discs were the same way. What this also means is that you can't go right to a particular story such as when he starts his Europian tour or a somewhat satisfying story where a skinhead gets his head blown away by a bouncer.
While the music world has changed since the early 80's, the CD is a good listen particularily for bands just starting out, maybe they can get an idea on what they could be in for. This is what I picked up anyway from listening: Being in a band isn't always going to be fun and games. It's hard work like anything else and unless your a hit right out of the box, your money comes hard and it will just survive till the next gig. You won't get handed everything just because your supposadly famous either, because that would only be.....weak.
Eye-Opening.......2004-01-26
'Get in the Van' is an eye-opening account of Henry Rollins' experiences with the struggling punk band Black Flag. Many of the stories are sad, shocking, funny, and facinating. It doesn't matter if one is into punk or not, it is interesting journey into the life of a traveling musician.
