As much as critics--and many musicians--love to hate this work, Carmina Burana is a uniquely entertaining and justly popular theatrical masterpiece. This collection of 13th-century secular poems, originally found in a Bavarian monastery, were selected, set to original music, and arranged for a large modern orchestra, vocal soloists, and choirs by German composer Carl Orff. Orff ingeniously used these large forces to create a work of astonishing and powerful simplicity. The simplest melodies, primal rhythms, and rudimentary orchestration combine for an unforgettably dynamic musical and dramatic experience. This is one of the first digital recordings of the work, and one of the more successful in balancing the large numbers of singers and instrumentalists. Judith Blegen's lovely rendition of "In trutina" is worth many hearings, and the energy and excitement generated in the sections for full choir and orchestra are something you just have to experience. --David Vernier

4 out of 5 stars Carl Orff: Carmina Burana aduio CD.......2007-01-21

A good orchestral rendition of this work. Not spectacular, but definitely good.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough energy.......2005-07-01

I will not repeat the correct observations of others about this recording vis a vis being less than dynamic.

However, the amazon.com review that states this has rudimentary orchestration is completely wrong. This piece is totally inventive in its use of orchestral and choral forces throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Version.......2005-01-08

I was enjoying Orff's masterpiece, until I reached the Tenor solo. It was at this point that I fell in love with this recording. William Brown performs one of the greatest renditions of the Roasting Swan that I've ever heard. Each of the 3 times that the melody is performed, it gradually becomes more strained. This is a direct result of the pain that the swan is experiencing. My hat also goes off to the Baritone and Soprano. Couldn't ask for better performers.

Shaw's group was once again flawless and the ASO always impresses me.

I study classical voice and choral conducting in a major university, and I would recommend this version of Carmina Burana to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Superb sound.......2004-12-14

To counter some of the other reviewer's comments here, I have both the Slatkin/St Louis Symphony version and the Robert Shaw version and there's no comparison. The Slatkin version is ponderous and the audio is pure mud. The chorus and orchestra are mixed together in a mess of sound that makes hearing the words impossible. In addition, the orchestral bass notes are just a bunch of mush.

By comparison, the Shaw version is crystal clear with easily distinguished choral voices, bass notes and triangles/cymbols. The bass drum rattles your fillings and adds to the impact. I've sung this piece myself in the Kennedy Center (Wash DC) and find this version to be perfect in every way. The chorus is superb. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best version ever heard! A melhor versão já ouvida!.......2003-06-07

When I heard the introduction of "O Fortuna" on the vinyl version of Sepultura's Morbid Visions album, dated 1986, I thought: Where to find this record, which orchestra and regent played this opus called Carmina Burana? There are several versions. I have one by Seiji Osawa, other by James Levini (in vinyl, with lyrics) and this by Robert Shaw that I consider the best!!!Through this site I could find it, just hearing the tracks! I must say: This version of Carmina Burana is the heaviest (due the tambour like a Thunder) and awesome of all time I have heard!!! It's simple and wonderful!!! This version have 4 long tracks. On a CD Player which displays the index, you can see the subtitles.
I ordered it in a classical music store.
I recommend it!!!...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great intro for ... opera fans.......2002-02-14

I adore Italian opera -- particularly Puccini. That makes this CD a real gem. All my favorite arias and duets are here, sung by well-known and talented artists.

If you're new to opera, you can't go wrong with this album. Puccini was the Spielberg of his time, and his work still has a lot of popular appeal. (It's much easier to like "La Boheme" than Wagner's Ring cycle -- that's for sure!)

If you have a lot of opera already, you probably have most of these songs. Still, if you want them all in one place, this is a worthy buy.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Puccini.......1999-09-23

This disc exposed me to the wonderful world of Puccini's melodious opera. It piqued my interest and turned me into a Puccini lover. Listening to full opera recordings has only solidified that love.

3 out of 5 stars Delightfully fun album; Opera for YOU!.......1999-04-30

Opera unfortunatley has the reputation for being uppity and pretentious, but this album shows that Opera can be fun and entertaining. This album is SUPERB for just listening to as you work, eat, or sleep. Especially if you've recently been turned on to Opera by Mr. Andrea Bocelli, you'll enjoy the rich diversity of this album. You know the tenor; how about soprano, etc? Grab a bowl of spaghetti, pour a glass of wine (or grape juice) and enjoy "Puccini & Pasta"!

5 out of 5 stars Arrows straight to your heart........1999-03-28

These beautiful arias will give you goose-bumps from head to toe, pierce your life's stress-tempered armor, and home straight into your heart. Bravo!!!

5 out of 5 stars A great first taste of opera's famous arias.......1999-03-04

Think you might like to try some opera? The arias on this disc are fabulous! Sylvia McNair has a voice like an angel. A must have for a beginning opera collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's all here.......2006-04-14

Norwegian-born Edvard Grieg has created many works for the orchestra, and this 6-CD box set contains almost all of them. Neeme Jarvi handles the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the choirs very well. The sound is crystal clear and has the perfect digital sound for every CD player/stereo.

For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.

For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.

To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.

A+

5 out of 5 stars An excellent box-set.......2003-08-30

This box-set a must have for any Grieg lovers.
Neeme Jarvi is very good.

In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein. She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found. This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt. And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...

In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...

And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works. And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.

In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09

Jarvi has been a fine advocate of Scandinavian music over the last 30 years. Even of those such as Grieg and Sibelius who you would think no longer needed advocacy. Most of these recordings were warmly welcomed on their releases and several won awards. And it's nothing but a pleasure to see them reappear again. The orchestral playing is sumptuous, but the real stand out is the singing of Barbara Bonney on several CDs.

This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.

Further recommendation: Anne Sofie von Otter's recording of the Haugtussa song cycle.

5 out of 5 stars James Levine's 25th Anniversary Met Opera Gala.......2006-08-14

It is an incredibly beautiful album. As with any album I like some pieces better than the next but overall it is beautiful and soothing. I keep it in the car and listen to it in horrid traffic time. It helps!

5 out of 5 stars Passing the acid test.......2004-07-04

My acid test is whether I leave the CD in the player for repeated (and repeated) playings. This one makes my cut. Every track is not as marvelous as some, but each has its charms. The whole adds up to a delicious opera excursion.

I saw this live and was completely captivated. Without the visuals, it is just as wonderful. I too wish they would release the rest of this marathon extravaganza. It deserves to be memorialized.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2003-08-13

i recommend this cd it's great to listen to while walking the dog.Opera makes fluffy happy.

5 out of 5 stars Great variety of fantastic singers!.......2002-01-07

This is as good as it gets. An awesome roster of international stars singing some of the best (but not the most well known) selections in all of opera, and of course James Levine, the man they are all celebrating. It almost goes without saying that Levine's conducting is without comparison throughout the recording. He is truly one of the best conductors of the last thirty years, and he has molded the Met Orchestra into the best in the world. This celebration perfectly captures the incredibly broad repertoire that he is familiar for. It starts out with a well-rounded performance of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers by Bryn Terfel and Roberto Alagana. When I bought the CD I had never heard the incredible melody that forms the theme of the duet, but it is one of the best in all of opera. Renee Flemming gives a performance of "Despuis le jour" that would be hard to match for sheer vocal beauty. Her final pianisimo is stunning. Domingo and Ramey sing a typically excellent performance of the Faust duet, while Ileana Cotrubas, in a Lehar excerpt shows why she was one of the best lyric sopranos of the last 25 years. "O don fatale" as sung by Dolora Zajick is the thrilling experience it should be. She nails the top notes perfectly and still maintains the warm fullness of the bottom of her register. The 'bravas' start almost before she finishes her final note. The sextet from Don Giovanni is given a world class performance (I have never heard it done better). Ruth Ann Swenson displays awesome coluratura ability in Juliet's lively waltz song, soaring to a high D in the final cadenza. I am not a big fan of Die Fledermaus, but if you are you will surely love the included duet. I was also never a big Alfredo Kraus fan, and I think he sounds more than a bit strained while singing the famous aria from Werther. Not so Grace Bumbry, who's seductive performance of Delila's music should be the standard for this aria. Deborah Voight's Tannhauser is impeccable, while Frederica von Stade sounds a little shrill in her aria. To round out the program is possibly the most exquisite performance ever of some of the most gorgeous music ever written; the final trio from Die Rosenkavalier. It will make a Strauss convert out of anyone.
There are no problems with the live sound, which is crisp, clean and sounds like it could have come from a recording studio. My only complaint is the lack of an overture or other orchestral number that would showcae the Met orchetra. Overall a CD well worth your money. Hopefully DG will release another CD soon with the rest of the concert. You won't find these selections anywhere else so every minute of it will be new and fresh. Fantastic for hard core opera fans or beginners. Highly Recommended!

This most favorite of choral works is infused with life through the fluid singing of the soloists. Hagegard's everyman baritone overflows with sensitive phrasing and a deliciously appealing timbre. McNair's lovely lyric glides across the music, capturing the subtle textual nuances--she has never been more appealing. The chorus is void of feeling in the first half, hypnotically following Slatkin's joyless lead. However, once they enter "The Court of Love" in Part III, they sing blissfully and expansively, capturing all the pleasures that Orff's piece offers. The orchestra, playing at full throttle, is crisp and energetic. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Carmina Burana.......2007-01-24

1. The work is very similar to an opera, highly dramatic and driven by text.

2. Opera is about voices, and this recording of Carmina has bar none the best collection of soloists on record.

3. While I do not consider myself an expert in orchestral sound or conducting, in my opinion the orchestra and chorus sound very good, not perfect, but very good. It seems to me that the style of this work does not call for an overly "constructed" sound from the orchestra. If you peruse the text you might gleen a little insight, as form should follow function. IMHO the sound from the orchestra and chorus are fitting for the meaning they are trying to convey.

4. Several people have given this recording bad ratings, and yet there seem to be a lack of noted material defect. If you think Slatkin's conducting is so bad, please fill us all in on why. Neurotic posts such as:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Carmina Burana recording.......2007-01-10

I have attended concerts, owned vinyls, owned taped versions and have this CD. This CD is so good that I bought another copy to give to our neighbors who had just attended a local concert of the piece.

The recording quality is excellent, the voices superb. I particularly enjoy the energy of the pieces. The spectral frequency range is excellent, although the volume range is too large with quiet pieces being to quiet and loud sections being overly loud. I fear this just the technical difficulty of recording such a large assembly of musicians the way the hearer perceives it.

I recommend this to anyone and everyone who admires Orff's work.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CARMINA BURANA.......2006-08-23

This is my favorite recording of Orff's CARMINA BURANA. No, I have not heard every commercially available recording (at the very least, I've heard snippets from many), but from what I have encountered in the past, I can enthusiastically say that THIS is the recording to own if you want to hear this work with all of the primal power you'd hope for.

Leonard Slatkin leads a top-notch St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with an almost maniacal vigor. The tempi are perhaps the quickest I've ever heard, which suits me fine. (Nothing more exciting than loud, agressive orchestral music!) Soprano Sylvia McNair is simply outstanding as is the baritone Hakan Hagegard, but I was slightly less impressed with the tenor John Aler whose vocal tone I found somewhat unappealing.

The engineering on this CD, thankfully, is bright and up front. Unlike many CARMINA recordings, the sound levels remain consistant across the board, so there won't be much need to continuously turn the volume up and down as the music alternates between loud and soft.

Highly recommended for CARMINA BURANA fans, as well as for anyone who likes a little bombast every now and again.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive "Carmina" From The Heartland Of America.......2004-09-06

Carl Orff's hour-long cantata "Carmina Burana" must rank as the single most popular choral work of the 20th century. Because of this, of course, there have also been many recordings of it--dozens in fact, from Eugen Jochum's 1968 recording with the Deutsche Opera of Berlin, to Andre Previn's 1974 London Symphony recording, and beyond.

For my money, though (and this is not to take away from the other great recordings of the piece on hand), the most explosive recording of this piece comes from the heartland of America. With superior vocalists Sylvia McNair, Hakan Hagegard, and John Aler on hand, Leonard Slatkin leads his St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in this 1992 recording that generates much passion and violence with its mix of sacred Latin chants and sometimes politically incorrect and profane dialogue.

The recording is spectacular from start to finish, but there are moments that I think stand out especially: "Olim Lacus Colueram", done by Aler; Hagegard's solo turn on "Ego Sum Annad Cacaniensis"; McNair's on "Dulcissime"; and the St. Louis Chorus itself on "O Fortuna", which bookends this gigantic work. It is no wonder that its medieval sound and text inspired much in the way of movie music, including THE OMEN and even parts of the music for the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy ("O Fortuna", in fact, was used in the 1981 film EXCALIBUR).

This recording is vigorously recommended, even if you already own other recordings of it. Slatkin's interpretation stands up well compared with the many other fine recordings also available.

A fascinating disc combining brilliant virtuosity and outstanding contemporary works. H.K. Gruber's Aerial is an accessible two-movement trumpet concerto. Its first movement depicts an imaginary landscape of northern wastes and begins with thin-air sonorities that turn into weightier passages that climb and recede. The second movement is more earthbound in its wit, with the trumpet, often muted, now soaring, now quizzical, partnered by the powerful rhythms of the orchestra. Peter Eötvös, who conducts the Gothenburg Symphony in all three works, contributes his Jet Stream, which opens with a cross between a foghorn and a Bronx cheer, and continues to explore spacy textures and a fascinating solo part, part improvisational, in which the soloist is shadowed by a trio of trumpeters. Mark-Anthony Turnage's From the Wreckage moves from desolation to assertive hope, with compact orchestration, lyric passages of great beauty, and raucous jazz rhythms - a heady mix that works here. Hardenberger is amazing throughout all three works, playing a variety of instruments, from flugelhorn to standard trumpet to the brilliant high piccolo trumpet, plus a range of mutes and altered trumpets as well. This one's not just for trumpet aficionados, it will intrigue anyone interested in the best of the current contemporary classical scene. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars Great Value, Some Recordings Any Collector Would Want.......2004-05-31

This is a very good CD, but a better value for only $10. The weakest singers are definitely mezzo Frederica von Stade (showtune) and Barbara Hendricks (beyond light lyric). Battle's aria from Mahler's 2nd is exceptionally out of place. The CD opens brightly with Dawn Upshaw's version of "On mighty wings" from Haydn's 'The Creation.' It's a strong, colorful piece that takes a bit of a beating from her nasality. Sylvia McNair is stupendous, possibly even surpassing Anna Moffo (the authoritative Rachmaninof Vocalise). Elly Ameling is in her usual good form with this Faure art song. McNair shines even more on "Rejoice Greatly" from Haendel's "Messiah." This may be the best version I've ever heard and possibly surpass Kathleen Battle's, considered one of the better of all time. The Laudamus Te is the crown jewel of the entire CD, it's from Vivaldi's Magnificat. This is truly well-sung by Dawn Upshaw and Judith Blegen, this is the reason you should buy the CD and go out and purchase the Shaw CD in its entirety. Marie McLaughlin sounds a bit weak on her aria from "The Mikado." To be honest, albeit she's English, she's a much better lyric soprano for Mozart, Haydn, Strauss not English through-composed and Operetta.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but dull.......2000-01-20

This album contains a lot of beautiful music. And a lot of boring music, too. But since not all of the singers are the same quality, let me briefly give an overview of some of their performances. I've never thought Dawn Upshaw was a very good classical singer. Her voice gets a little whiny sometimes and her vowels are abominably American. Sylvia McNair has a lovely voice, and the Rachmaninov is good, but I've heard better (Renee Fleming and Anna Moffo come to mind), and she makes the piece even longer than usual by taking the two repeats. The second of her pieces has none of the joy that it should have and is very dull, if technically good. Judith Blegen, Elly Ameling, and Arleen Auger are average sopranos giving pretty but emotionless readings of their songs and arias. Barbara Hendricks RACES through "Ach ich fuhls" like it was Lakme's Bell Song, and sounds HORRIBLE. Kathleen Battle is good but Mahler seems out of place here, but not as out of place as Gilbert and Sullivan or Rogers and Hammerstein. In fact, what is Frederica Von Stade doing on this album of divine "sopranos" anyway? She has a lovely mezzo-soprano voice. Diana Soviero seems a bit out of place too, with her not-too-pretty but more powerful and interesting voice.

All in all, if you can get past the blandness of the performances, the album is pretty. But I like my sopranos to be made of much sterner stuff than these.

    5 out of 5 stars don't analyse, listen.......1999-11-24

My scariest nightmare is that of some one breaking into my house and stealing this CD while I am at work.

The selection of excerpts is absolutely pleasing.

Of course I am carried away saying this is the most beautiful thing I know. If you belong to those who don't let anything carry them away, don't buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle and Barbara Hendricks were outstanding........1999-06-18

The vocal talents of Kathleen Battle and Barbara Handricks were far superior to any of the others on this collection. Kathleen Battle's clarity of note and the depth of tonal resonnance of Barbara Hendricks clearly outshone all of the other ladies. Ms. McNair and Ms. Upshaw, listen and take note.

The Requiem is a beautiful, gentle composition, and Barbara Bonney's voice is a gorgeous soprano on her solo pieces.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Late Strauss.......2003-08-26

This is a fine recording of Strauss' late masterpiece. The last opera written at the end of a very productive career, Strauss co-wrote the libretto. This work is a clever meditation on the nature of art and the relationship between drama and music. This is a relatively short work with beautiful, lyrical music, and lovely singing. Recommended strongly.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording.......2005-08-06

Having heard much of Hardenberger's piccolo work, I was pleased to see that his cornet playing is equally impressive. He nails technically demanding pieces without sacrificing his beautiful sound. Arban's Norma Variations and Hartmann's piece based on Rule Britannia are never dull, and Hardenberger is accurate and virtuosic on the more modern pieces, including the Francaix Sonatine and the fiendishly difficult Maxwell Davies sonata. Every piece is superbly played, and Pontinen provides good accompaniment.
