About the Artist
Perpetual Sound Systems (PS2) is the audio collective of Paul Chaconus, John Bowen and their arsenal of computers. The two have been friends and music addicts for over fifteen years; and between ‘em, they have had their hands in many aspects of the music scene... Paul was the guitarist for the hardcore band Far Cry (on the German label 'Crucial Response') and was also running his own studio putting in countless hours of engineering. Constantly staying on top of the newest software & buying new hardware, he is the sound system's chief technology officer. John has been djing for the past 10 years holding down residencies at some of dc's and new york's finer venues as well as playing private parties for supermodels in NYC and movie preimer parties in London.

They first began recording together in 1995 producing house tracks for the New York dance label 'Gutterball Recordings'. In 1999 they released a track as PS2 on Open Source Music for the WOPA ”Walking on Pennsylvania Avenue - Sounds of DC Remixed” compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Reggae classic from the seventies.......2005-03-06

This compilation of songs from two landmark albums, "Cool Ruler" originally released in 1978 and "Soon Forward" released in 1979. It captures very well Gregory Isaacs' sensual, smooth crooning style that has made him popular with audiences around the world. This cd has compiled some huge jamaican hits like the beautifull "Soon Forward", the understated "Mr. Brown" and the lovers roots reggae classic "John public".His backing band is provide as usual by Jamaica's finest session musicians; Sly Dunbar, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace and Santa on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, Chinna, Ranchie and Bingy Bunny on guitars,Sticky and Skully on percussions and Dennis Brown,Leroy Sibbles and Junior Delgado on backgroung vocals. The repertoire came from the sessions recorded and mixed at the legendary Channel one Studios. This is what I call strictly Jamaican roots music. Get it!

2 out of 5 stars Strange tunes.......2004-12-23

It can be seen as a bad omen when the first song on an album sounds like parts of Jabba's Palace. And that is the sound that opens Perpetual Sound System's "Forward Selection": Pretty, eerie, random-sounding, and virtually impossible to get attached to.

A few bits of sound sampling and reggae vocalization spice up a few songs, like "Space," but the major parts of each song are cold, slightly brittle-sounding electronic beats. A few like "Slow" don't even have that -- just sweeps of chilly electronic sound, not quite epic enough to be considered soundscapes.

At first listen, these are pretty cool -- watery and eerie. It doesn't take long to realize that that is most of what the music is: minimal beats overlaid by weird, initially impressive sound effects, apparently in the hope that the UFO-underwater feel will drown out the simplistic music scheme.

It's also quite repetitive -- virtually every song employs the same wavering electronic waves and squiggles. And it's almost impossible to tell them apart simply by hearing them, since the biggest difference seems to be how fast or slow they are. "Rizzla" manages to break the mold with some weird vocals and a thick, foggy sonic layer, but then it's back to the jittery trip-hop.

"Forward Selection" ends up sounding a bit like a layer of ice on the ground -- chilly, brittle, and partly transparent. It's a downtempo album that sounds good initially, but starts to pall as the songs blend into each other.
