Mix Master Mike is a world-champion turntable battler, and it shows on his debut recording. The first half is full of furious high-energy scratching, complete with cartoon imagery and bratty jokes; it's an old-school hip-hop party that takes place in the Beastie Boys' 'hood. It's entirely appropriate that Mike, one of San Francisco's famed Invisibl Skratch Piklz, contributes to three tracks on the Beasties' Hello Nasty and replaces DJ Hurricane in their live show; they share a manic energy. But the second half of Anti-Theft Device offers some smoother, contemplative tracks--it's on par with the dense introspection of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... but with more flow and less virtuoso scratching. It shows that the triple M is only beginning to work out all his ideas. --Martin Johnson
Customer Reviews:
Good first impression.......2006-08-25
Mix Master stepped up and showed the world how it was done with this opening album and was able to prove why he earned the title Mix Master Mike, winning countless scratch battles. I read at Yahoos bio for him that he was banned from competitions because no one else stood a chance. Whether or not that's true I have yet to prove either way, but listening to this you can see why. A fast and ingenious mixer, he came in with his best foot forward and left a real impression on the music world. A great album well worth the asking price.
gets better with every listen.......2003-05-30
I like underground beats and never really got into most of the hardcore, heavy bass line hip hop that was coming out in the 90s. Then I heard Anti-Theft Device. Mixmaster Mike uses some of the heaviest bass lines, and he knows just how use them. He's got some the best, all-out turntable sample and scratch techniques I've heard. But if you're not a fan of nonstop cuts and loops laced with hardcore beats, then this may not be for you. If you like to hear a DJ really hit the tables hard (like I do), then your money can't be spent better.
Winded and kinda redundant, but still solid........2002-11-13
I can say that Mixmaster Mike the first person who made me believe that turntablism is a viable and respectable genre of music. While most will see it as just basically a guy with two turntables and needle that scratches things up, there is still alot of respect to the talented elite who stand up in the DJ audience. Its just kinda sad that Mixmaster Mike's solo debut just doesn't hold up in the long run.
There are some truly groovin' and brilliant moments still. He can cut, scratch, sample faster than most eyes can move(you have to see him in action). And despite all this, he still knows how to hit a groove. But where is next CD(Eye of The Cyclops) was tought and thematic, to me this album just feels lacking in comparison. And as a whole, this album seems to drag(clocking in at over an hour). Its just too long.
Fans of the Mix Master already own this. Those who don't should still check it out but I would definitely take Cyclops over this record.
Incredible.......2002-02-16
This is one of the freshest (if not THE freshest) and best produced releases in hip-hop's last 10 years. Mike is way way ahead of his time. It makes me happy to see 25 user reviews almost all agreeing about how good it is. I figured this release would be completely misunderstood or lost on people. There's hope after all...
This is one of my very few "Must Buy" CDs for anyone with an open mind and an ear toward hip-hop.
A Real Trip.......2001-06-02
I got switched on to Mike's work on some of the Beastie Boy's later works and really haven't looked back since. A lot of people claim that he is either the best or one of the best DJs around and "Anti-Theft Device" really backs up this claim.
The way the album is put together is really interesting, in that there are various bits which seem to tell a story if you listen carefully enough. However, the story never seems to really finish - not even at the end of the album.
For DJS the album works as a "master at work" sort of thing - similar I guess to a trumpeter listening to Miles Davis - and as far as I'm concerned, my own skills will never come remotely close to the skills exhibited here.
The way I prefer to listen to this album is as a sort of game of sample-finding. Throughout the album there are vocals from various rappers (Beastie Boys, Guru and I think NWA) and also various bits lifted from movies and advertisements. As an example, one track samples Austin Powers' nemesis Dr Evil saying "welcome to my underground lair", at the time I heard this track I hadn't actually seen Austin Powers - now I have and can appreciate the irony with which the sample is used.
The real standout for me is the early part of the album. After Mike's intro and a sample of the Beasties, we get into one of the funniest sci-fi spoofs ever created. The story of "colonel Vlaha" is going well enough until we lean that NASA claims that the voice (which sounds familiar) was not Vlaha's. This then gives cause for a voice to tell you to turn up your speakers very loud to maximise the noise that will come through them.
Far from being some kind of monotonous beeping sound - as I had expected - it turned out to be another sample. This really is the story of the entire album.
Mike continually throws in bizarre samples which make you stop and think "haven't I heard that somewhere before?" before another one comes in which just makes you burst out laughing.
In short, this is truly a work by a master DJ and one which deserves inclusion by anyone interested in art of turntablism or of hip-hop generally. It is an album which will really grow on you with repeated listens and having had them you certainly won't be disappointed.

Album Description
Bangzilla, is nothing short of title reference. It's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Mike vs. MechaMike. Action packed, kick drums to the chest, hard bass for the booty, and all the scratchin' is bound to put a hurtin' on them. If you can't get a feel for that, pop it in your car CD player and see how fast your speedometer moves. The uptempo beats bang their way through Mike's sonic escapade. Piece the narratives together for story time in your mind. It's an adventure Alice in Wonderland couldn't mess with. Protect your neck. The battle is on.

Good stuff........2005-01-30
An incredible album. Although I know him from Hello Nasty and To the Five Boroughs, this is my first actual Mix Master Mike album and I must say it's amazing what Mix Master Mike can do when released from the production overview of others.
Think of it as a hip-hop/turntablism opera of sorts. Each track is distinct and yet they flow seamlessly into each other, each successive one elaborating on the last, finally concluding in a dramatic bass explosion (if you will) on track 13, The Joust.
Mix- MIx-MIx Masta!.......2004-11-30
Alright, MIKE IS BACK!!! I don't think Mike is capable of dropping a bad album, and this one is no acception. The whole damn LP is DOPE! you can really tell he worked on the production side alot more this time. His beats BANG in the stereo and the scratching is straight NASTY. standard MMM is always better than most's top notch. i just wish the beastie's would let him do more of his thing on their albums. to the 5 boroughs let him shine alittle...but they should let him have a track like "babu in deep concentration" on the new dialated LP. But nonetheless, this man is DOPE. BUY THIS AND CRY TEARS OF JOY! NO BOOTLEGGING!!!!!
intergallactic beats.......2004-10-31
Mix master mike has really worked on his beats this time. i give him props for that. what i miss is like a scratch-theme in each track like dj revolution, dj premier are doing using acapellas and making own lyrics, sentences with it.
Overall the album is ok, but not a classic.
The Mix Master.......2004-10-25
Mix Master Mike has done it again, with his latest album Bangzilla he demonstrates once again that he is the true Mix Master. Bangzilla is the Mix Master on two turn tables making his songs fresh from many cuts, alot like the style of Anti-Theft Device. I would recommend this album to anyone interested even the slightest in turntableizm. A must buy!

Techno & Classical: What a great combination!.......2004-02-26
I am a high school teacher and play classical music daily during work time. On Fridays one of our special CDs is Mozart Master Mix and the students love it.
My two favorite types of music are techno and classical. This CD is the best of both worlds.
UNREAL!.......2002-02-12
Who would have thought that Mozart can dance!!! This is a perfect compilation fusing the Ministry Chillout style with that of Drum and Bass.
A definite buy!
unique, beautiful.......2001-11-20
This is a wonderful cd and anyone who enjoys the occasional classical music will appreciate this "drum and bass meets Mozart" collection. However, there is only one piece by Mozart, other songs are from composers such as Bach and Vivaldi.
Good variety of selections with all very different styles.......1999-01-21
The "Mozart Master Mix" CD is one with a variety of samples from all different classical artists and all mixed by modern day artists. If you like dance music and music with a good beat this is a great CD to try. Although at times some songs get a bit monotonous, they are basically good renditions of classical music. One especially good song is Vivalogy which is a mix of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. If you like to dance, or like classical songs but are looking for something with a little more beat to it, this is an Excellent CD.
Bach, Beethoven, & Mozart groove on the dance floor!!!!!!!.......1998-08-24
This is a fabulous album. For a person with eclectic tastes, this is a must buy. It takes famous classical music and sets it to a modern, dance beat. I was hooked the minute I heard it. The 2nd track, "Diadema" takes Hildegard von Bingen chants and turns it into a continuous, chanting beat. Those of you who didn't like those corny monks chanting, you'll love this! You'll hear traditional chanting in a way you never have before. Also included on this album are "remakes" of Vilaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". If you were never a fan of classical before, you will be now!

Customer Reviews:
Believe the hype.......2000-01-25
I feel, that the review "don't believe the hype" is unjust to this album. To say that mix master mike is getting worldwide recognition for dj'ing with the beastie boys, is untrue. He was (and still is) a phenomenal dj way before he and the b-boys got together. Winning at the DMC's as well as modernizing the way one manipulates the turntable. This album can of course get repetitive, but singles aren't always the most interesting things to buy. There are occasionally a bad mix and there are very few songs on these smaller albums. Singles are not usually a person's top albums. However, eventhough fellow ISP member, Q-bert, is a phenomenal dj who puts out dazzling albums, his success and style is in great part due to MMM. So, the hype is real, mix master is a phenomenal dj. He is and will always be one of the greatest dj's ever. His sense of tone manipulation and musicality puts him that one step further then q-bert, who is more techinique (perfect technique mind you) than musicality.
Don't believe the hype.......1999-04-20
MixMasta is gaining wide recognition from being the new DJ for the B-Boys, but this CD single gets tired quick. The best track is #4 (original version) so you might as well buy the "Anti-Theft Device" album instead of this if you're even remotely interested. Check out his fellow "Invisibl Skratch Piklz" crew member "DJ Qbert" if you want some REAL skillz on the turntable.
