3 out of 5 stars Honourable Mention.......2005-05-01

This is a well-balanced cd. There are a lot of solid tunes and one cannot help but hear the 60s influence. Tom Hakava from Stockholm should meet these guys. I like their folkier side yet I can certainly get down to the punk oriented tunes such as "Same Old Song". This is not necessarily on my top ten albums list although, I would include it on my 'must have' list. I like this band and this cd a lot.

3 out of 5 stars similar!.......2005-01-23

For all of you out there who want to know who this truly sounds like, it is sam roberts. sam roberts is also a canadian boy (but from québec), and his sound is slightly more varying i think. they both have a smooth, relaxed sound, but i know they've got rocker edge too! if you liked this one, or liked a couple songs on it, but found it iffy, go for sam roberts, as it is more solid.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing out of the Yukon since Pierre Berton.......2004-12-25

I must say, this is a wonderful album. After hearing their explosive single "Same Old Song" on the radio, I went into HMV figuring they may have them on a listening post or something. Sure enough, they did, and I liked what I heard just by skipping through it. So, I bought the CD, and I really do like it. Granted, some of the songs are a little repetitive, but you will get that with any band. I think there are some obvious musical similarities to someone like Sam Roberts, whose CD I also own. Both Canadian, both kind of chillin music, and a distinct sound.

Some standout tracks are: People Come On, an anthem that kind of says to me "come together"; Same Old Song, their single; You Gave It All, some nice guitar in that song; and The Shells, which trancends many styles of rock music.

Overall, I think this is a CD which has to grow on you. If you are thinking about purchasing this CD, do it. Not only because you're supporting Canadian music, but because you're supporting good Canadian music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted pop/rock pleasure........2004-11-17

Every Page You Turn is blessed with songs that have infectious melodies and lyrics that are memorable and open to different interpretations. There are a lot of strong influences from 1960's and 70's bands (Rolling Stones, The Who, The Byrds, to name a few) that occur naturally in the music as salutes to some of the bands that have influenced the young singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Stephen Noel Kozmeniuk. This album would be attractive to listeners of all ages because of the homage to earlier music and the retro movement to this music young people are now experiencing.

There is a very well balanced selection of songs, at least half- a-dozen of which would be strong singles. The current single, 'Same Old Song' is burning up the radio airplay charts in Canada. My favorite song on the album is 'The Shells' which gives you shivers with its beauty. The best review I could give is from an excerpt by Vancouver Sun music writer Tom Harrison from his October 26 review:

"This album touches on a variety of styles from country to folk and rock with some Pink Floyd atmosphere and one song 'Up In This Town', worthy of [Iggy Pop and] The Stooges. So, there is variety but it is all linked by Boy's flair for the magnificent. The songs have a bigness that tell you they matter and an urgency that beckons. 'People Come On', the first track, sounds like an anthem-to-be while what follows is rock at its most liberating."

This is a MUST HAVE CD.

3 out of 5 stars It's not bad........2004-11-14

I heard how good this group is, and although I've never heard any of their songs prior to purchasing it (which is a big risk, I know), I thought I'd give them a try.

If you're familiar with Sloan and/or Coldplay, you'll start to notice a little bit of a similarity between the two bands. The group has a good general sound; the bass line's decent, good guitar riffs, and not bad vocals either.

The only complaint I have with this CD is that not too many songs stand out; all of the songs sound relatively the same. Although my personal favourite track is "You Gave it All", that seems to be the only one that stand out to me.

Personally, if you're looking to rock-out, I wouldn't recommend this band. But if you're trying to mellow out, or have something to listen to, Boy may be a good choice for you.

Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21

When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.

4 out of 5 stars Defending the Alamo.......2005-09-09

I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-06-22

This is an excellent CD. If you are interested in this CD you will love "Audio Tour of the Alamo and Old San Antonio of the Wild West". 5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05

Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2004-12-01

A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).

OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.

Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.

The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.

Album Description

Debut from 1998 for Swedish rock outfit includes 20 tracks of dark, dramatic rock 'n' roll echoing the majesty and ambitions of classic albums past. Their sound recalls everyone from The Doors to Pink Floyd to Led Zeppelin, however avoiding the pitfall of nostalgia.

Album Details

The Debut Album from 1997 from the Swedish Musicians that Came from the Remnants of the Union Carbide Productions. Their Sound and Style Draws Heavily from Rock and Progressive Bands of the 1960's and 70's. You Really Can't Call them Retro, but They have Cunningly Utilized These Sounds to an Entirely Different Effect. They Could have Fit Right in Alongside Many of the Prog Bands of the Past, but Theirs is Quite a Distinctly Different Sound Altogether....and Very Invigorating and Addicting at That!

3 out of 5 stars the bong water blues.......2006-10-28

This was purchased on the strength of the rolling credits at the end of the 2002 movie "Spun". A Jonas Akerlund film about a traveling meth lab cooker (Mickey Rourke) and the users (Brittany Murphy) who follow his every movement (which would explain the film scores need for the song "Instant Repeater 99"). Aside from that The Soundtrack Of Our Lives' (or TSOOL for the loyalist) 1998 release "Welcome To The Infant Freebase" really didn't capture the mood of the film itself (just in case you thought it would), although the anthematic "99" is certainly worth several repeat performances.

I'm not saying the band was mis-cast by Akerlund, but you get an extreme sense of who their hero's really are on this outing ie; that late 60's pharmaceutical jazz cafe sound of Yes or the acid induced improv of early 70's Pink Floyd. The Peter Gabriel era of Genesis is also an obvious influence on the band and perhaps explains the fairy tale art rock quality you're hearing on this CD. Hardly bikers falling over themselves in a methamphetamine rage, more like hippie wannabe's tip toeing over spilt bong water.

5 out of 5 stars A fantasic rock album!.......2004-11-11

This is a awsome album from start to finish, okay all the songs are not masterpieaces but many of em are and there is enuf great music here to make it a must have album from Swedens best rock band ever.
If you like old classic rock music, like Pink Floyd, The WHO, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and ather great bands, and whant somting new but with the same greatnes that this old bands hade this album is for you.
Its sound like a mix betwen thos classic rock bands but on the same time it sounds new fresh and original.

A must have for any music lover.

3 out of 5 stars Not the place to start for potential fans.......2004-01-24

"Welcome to the Infant Freebase" is a far more acquired taste of music than is the gloriously brilliant "Behind the Music", and I would not reccomend this to be the first Soundtrack of Our Lives album you pick up. The songs here are long and drawn out, although not boring in the least. This type of rock could be called pretentious, and to a certain point, it is, but I also see it as being a bold debut from one of Sweden's premier bands. There is alot of experimentation here, and the influence of Pink Floyd is very apparent. The result is a trancier, trippier album than the later efforts from this band.

This is a very good album, but for potential fans of this great band, I would recommed you pick up "Behind the Music" first, and after you fall in love with that album, then give this one a try, because your mind will be more succeptible to the grand ideas of TSOOL.

      3 out of 5 stars It's good, but............2003-08-22

its way too long! I dont get this fascination of producing an album thats more than 40 minutes long. I mean, 50 is pushing it..... but 70....no...that is way too long, specially for what they are doing, I wish I could pick out a favorite song, but I just cant cause eventaully it just sounds that same after 50 minutes......

Sad that they not only make this mistake on this album but on all of their albums as well.

Though if you are to buy any of their albums I recommend this one, its my favorite. And to the band members of Soundtrack of our Lives.....you are good, but please, dont make your cds so long..... try for 45-55 minutes for the next album, come on, I know you can do it, just give it a try!

3 out of 5 stars Solid debut from Swedish band.......2003-05-22

No, they're not the saviors of rock'n'roll but they write amazing riffs that echo the past without repeating it. A bit of history for those who harshly comdemn this fine album; The Beatles and The Stones first couple of albums borrowed left and right from their American predecessors. They managed to beg, steal and borrow what worked for others and eventually create a new sound all their own. The same is true of this Swedish offshoot of Union Carbide Productions.

Although not as focused (or as well written) as either Behind The Music nor the under rated Extended Relevation, Welcome To The Infant Freebase acknowledges the past and moves forward. That's nothing new. Bands like REM, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, The Stone Roses, Echo and The Bunnymen and Roxy Music have done the same. Here the band's influences are more blatant but later albums manage to incorporate those influences into a unique, sandblasting style.

Infact Freebase runs on a bit too long and has too many ordinary songs mixed in with the band's much richer, denser material. That's O.K. Debut albums aren't meant to be flawless but to give us a taste of what an artist is capable of creating. Infant Freebase does just that. I'd probably start with Behind The Music and, if you like it, work backward album by album.

      2 out of 5 stars A lotta hype and a little ho-hum.......2003-03-30

Welcome to the Modern Hype Machine, more like. If you haven't been paying attention, the Soundtrack of Our Lives is currently getting lumped in as one of those "saviors of rock & roll". Reviewers extol their penchant for ripping off every rock band that came before them like it was a virtue. I might've even concurred, if the results were even slightly more interesting than this tepid collection of jams in search of songs. You'll hear a little Stones - okay, a LOT of the Stones - in the "Exile On Main Street"-style riffs, but you'll hear none of the implied danger and sex that made the Stones great. The rockers somehow bleed into the ballads without changing tempo or energy. Seriously, with the exception of "Blow My Cool" (which stands out because it blatantly steals its background vocals from "Let's Spend the Night Together"), I still can't tell one song from the other. Not bad enough to offend, not good enough to inspire, The Soundtrack of Our Lives occupy a nonthreatening middleground where they merely suggest the greatness of past rockers. And for me, that ain't nowhere.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Psychedelic Classic!.......2002-02-28

Soundtrack of Our Lives is the next best rock group that Sweden have ever produced(Union Carbide Productions i of course the best). This album is their incredible debut that was released in 96 to a largely indifferent world(exept in Sweden) Their influences ranges from Stooges, Love, early Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and every other good rock group in history. Why not five stars? Well it is a bit to long(about 70 minutes) and some songs are a bit unfocused.
