5 out of 5 stars DAME SHIRLEY DOES IT AGAIN!!.......2007-07-11

The CD is out at long last...the party has started! Dame Shirley Bassey shines as always! She is a world treasure! A MUST buy CD.

5 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN!!!.......2007-07-09

This is a fun one...lots of great remixes, stunning new vocals from a lady who show no signs of slowing down. "Living Tree" is powerful, "Party" is great fun. Nobody does it like the Dame!

5 out of 5 stars Majestic!!.......2007-07-09

Welsh/Nigerian songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, returns with an album of classics with a contemporary twist. Produced by a slew of cutting edge producers and remixers like Bugz in the attic, and North by northwest, the project was driven by the Dame herself.

Best known by some for the Bond theme songs she sang; "Diamonds are forever", "Goldfinger". And "Moonraker", the 13 songs on this collection are heavily influenced by that. The album has already given Dame Shirley Bassey her first UK top 10 album in some decades and deservedly so.

"The living tree" is arguably the best Bond record that never was, with it's Trip Hop feel; a brooding sound, sweeping dramatic strings and explosive vocal delivery (her voice is as booming as ever - she doesn't do things by halves) from the seventy year old Dame. Similar is the self assertive "This is my life".

Lionel Richie's "Hello" is given a haunting, atmospheric treatment. Nicole's dad would be proud of the result. The lightly horn sprinkled "Can I touch you there" (the Michael Bolton song) is similarly transformed (lovely percussion and nice male harmonies).

"I who have nothing" is given a slight dub feel, while "I will survive" is transformed by epic sounding strings and skittery percussion. "What now my love" has a slight salsa feel. "You only live twice" (originally done by Nancy Sinatra) is covered superbly here, downplaying the Bond feel, and giving it a light Cuban feel.

"Where is the love" is given the disco treatment (superb sax outro, by the way), similar to her "Moonraker" hit, and her old hit "Big spender" starts off startingly like Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" in its new incarnation.

The title track is a rousing reworking of Pink's "Get the party started" with dramatic strings, and crisp enunciation from the Dame.

It is amazing to see a veteran like Dame Shirley Bassey still sounding cutting edge and not resting on her laurels. If you like your music bland and safe, this might not be for you.

Her other album of remixes, "Diamonds are forever: the remix album" is also worth checking out. "Get the party started" is a wonderful aural experience!!

5 out of 5 stars A Triumph!! BRAVO BASSEY!!.......2007-07-09

Finally got this long awaited CD, and it doesn't dissapoint. Great from beginning to end. Dame Shirley shows the world what real singing is all about. Althougth some of the songs have been re-recorded, they are fresh and exciting. I really love Big Spender , Kiss me Hone, Honey, and what else can you say about This Is My Life?

The tile track is sublime, and so is Where is the Love. A must have for all music lovers. You would never know this woman is 70years old listening to her voice!!!

Dreamy and loose, Talk Talk's Laughing Stock turns 180 degrees away from the '80s pop sound of It's My Life and runs headlong into a web of Brian Eno, avant-garde, jazz, and experimental structure. The songs ache with languid phrases and the naked, vulnerable voice of Mark Hollis, the only element of the band that remains perceptible from their verse-chorus-verse past. The bashing, off-time clatter of "Ascension Day"; the impossibly patient organ motif snaking into a wailing guitar string in "After the Flood"; the terrifying, beautiful silences that engulf "Runeii" and "Myrrhman"; and the teetering, defenseless vocal Hollis lays down on "New Grass"--it all adds up to a stellar, shockingly original work that shreds all pretense of genre limitations, finding a transcendence in the light and shadow of musical color. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

The band's final album, originally released in 1991 on Polydor. It was promptly deleted three months after it's release due to wrangling with the record company. Now available on the band's own label Pond Life. Standard jewel case.

4 out of 5 stars Late opinion.......2007-05-12

It's obvious that Talk Talk were getting as far away from pop music as they could by the time this CD was issued. This CD sounds much more like solo effort that Marc Hollis released years later. The songs are well played, the tunes are nice but not really easy listening type, so you have to listen a copule of times before you remember them. I just missed a coulpe of more recognisable melodies (think of Life's what you make it, Living in another world, Tomorrow started etc), but wasn't disappointed in general.

5 out of 5 stars Laughing stock Talk Talk.......2007-05-12

WORTH A LISTEN
This was a surprise to me, I did not know their music, but it's a blend of electric folk and acid jazz, very cool and uplifting vocals. A must for a music traveler.

5 out of 5 stars Part two of Spirit of Eden.......2007-04-03

The only complaint i could really aim at this swansong epic from Talk Talk is that it really breaks no new ground from Spirit of Eden- i find no real difference in tones sound etc. But ofcourse it is more a continuation or another part of that album. Most of the same guest musicians show up for this dark downtempo album- and the recording sounds nearly identical production wise and trackwise to Spirit of Eden. Still the fact remains these are two of the best minimal postrock art jazz whatever you want to call it recordings from the last 30 years. This was a band miles ahead of the pack that helped influence Portishead and Radioheads better moments. Its part ambient acoustic- very spacey and minimal before erupting into slowchurning bursts of almost triphop styled jazz. Some of the material foreshadows U2s achtung baby's darker slower tunes - the drums no doubt you will notice sound like that albums drums. I mention this only in sound - not to say TAlk Talk sounds like u2 or vice versa. The songs on L-Stock are long- far from pop verse chorus stylings and are completely uncommercial. This is music for musics sake and makes the new wave of Talk Talks' early career seem a bad distant memory. No band ever redeemed themselves so late in their career as well as TAlk TAlk. Not having both these albums is almost unforgivable for a music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Super sounds.......2007-02-01

Decided to go ahead and buy this CD after reading the reviews, and getting Spirit of Eden on my friend 'noid's recommendation. Glad I did. Thanks reviewers for such detailed reviews. And, thanks to my pal, LS, I have formally been introduced to Talk Talk. :)

5 out of 5 stars a living, breathing work of ART.......2006-09-10

Laughing Stock, like its predecessor Spirit Of Eden, is so wholly satisfying on every possible level that it makes me wonder why I need anything else in my life. It is an undeniable masterpiece of modern art, and I think that is the key to getting the most out of this album--one must not think of Laughing Stock as a musical release or collection of compositions - it is a painting, a sculpture, a living, breathing work of ART that can only come alive when processed through your ears. Everytime I hear this album, my mind always paints a very vivid fresco that I cannot describe--Laughing Stock (and again, Spirit Of Eden) is the only album I've ever heard that makes me think like that. I don't think I've ever actually heard the album, but I have certainly seen it many, many times, and it is a work of uncompromising and utterly perfect beauty. To me, this defines art.

If someone said to me "Laughing Stock is hands down the greatest album ever made" I would not argue with them.

5 out of 5 stars You oughta be ashamed!.......2007-02-28

You oughta be ashamed if you're a blues guitar fan and don't have this in your collection. Simply put, one of the greatest live blues CDs I've ever heard. Roy's guitar is mesmerizing, with great backing from his band, and the wonderful ooze from the Hammond organ adds great soul and depth. The highlight is Roy's Bluz followed by the R&B flavored Can I Change My Mind & I'm A Ram. A winning trifecta! Hell, it's all good! Good vocals too, even the 2 by Roy himself.

3 out of 5 stars still underrated.......2006-11-13

Roy Buchanan. A guitar genious. One of the greatest and top 100 rated
in the world. This should not be your 1st Roy CD, you need to have 8 or 9 by now.

4 out of 5 stars Why not the best "Known" guitarist in the world?.......2006-05-04

I've been listening to Roy Buchanan consistently for a year now, ever since I picked up his "best of..." CD. I recommend that one for starters, promptly followed by Live Stock. Anyway, from the gut-wrenching opening solo of "Roy's Bluz", through the splinkety-splonkety, air-guitar-inspiring "Can I Change My Mind" and finishing up with the grunting, sinuous "I'm Evil" - you simply won't be let down. It may not be the most rounded of RB's albums (try "You're Not Alone"), but with numbers like the ones mentioned above, it's hard to complain.

5 out of 5 stars Buchanan and Price are the blues.......2005-04-04

Buchanan's guitar cries the blues and Price's silky smoothe voice is unblievable. the track 'can i change my mind' is the best. if you are a blues fan at all buy this album. it is a classic.

Writer-director Guy Ritchie's street-tough look at London's decrepit underworld and the unsavory dealings of four best friends whose cockiness is undercut by some serious trouble features a soundtrack of quick dialogue sound clips, a smattering of classic rock, pop, and reggae, and a few current submissions as well. Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves," known most to rock audiences by the Clash cover, is a great piece of political resistance and laidback dub groove. James Brown's "The Payback" and "The Boss" and Iggy and the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" stake out the sharp end, while the late Dusty Springfield paints the softer corner with "Spooky." Ocean Colour Scene delivers the backwards guitar driven "100 Mile High City," and Stretch's "Why Did You Do It?" is a great recreation of early '70s soul. --Rob O'Connor

I enjoyed much of the cd although some of the songs were much like movie reviews... the snippets you hear are the only good parts of the songs. On the whole, however, I really enjoy listening to the cd.

Awesome soundtrack to an awesome movie.

5 out of 5 stars I hate soundtracks but loved this.......2002-05-03

Normally soundtracks don't find their way into my changer very often. I'll usually just put one or two tracks on a compilation disc. But this bad boy is a compilation disc already made with every song being top choice. The tracks on this CD were chosen be someone with taste as opposed to the usual bunch of Muppets. Enjoy!

Man why did te US get shafted. I bought the US version first, and wondered where a lot of the songs I herd on the movie were. When I found out the UK version had more, boy I was pissed. Anyway, if you're a fan of this movie, or soundtracks of films like Pulp Fiction, or any other Tarantino film, you should definintly pick this up.

peace

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUNDTRACK!!! UK version.......2002-07-10

I nearly bought the US version until I stumbled upon this one, compared and realised that so much was left off the US one. If you like this one, you will like the Snatch Soundtrack. I did get the US one on that. But the only difference are the dialouge tracks, which I was able to live without, considering I own Snatch VHS and have it memorized. in fact i have L S & 2S B memorized too, but it is ten times funnier.

5 out of 5 stars 'nuff said.......2002-06-13

If you're checking out this soundtrack, chances are you've either seen Lock Stock or Snatch and know about what great soundtracks they have. So do yourself a favor and buy this now!

5 out of 5 stars TWO versions of the soundtrack, read below:.......2001-12-15

Guy Ritchie is not only an amazing director, but he's attached the most unusual and awesome mix of music to this classic-to-be movie. This CD is for anyone who enjoys something away from the normal. BE WARNED!! There are two versions! I myself accidentally bought the American version, HUGE MISTAKE!!!! It lacked many delicious songs that were vital for maximum enjoyment. Please do NOT make the same mistake I did, buy the Imported version, do your research, you'll see. ENJOY!!

5 out of 5 stars Rock and roll roller coaster soundtrack.......1999-05-07

First, go see the movie. Then by magnetic force you will be compelled to buy the CD in order to once again experience the rock and roll rollercoaster ride of the movie. An ecletic mix of rock, James Brown blues, and brit pop - along with a nice dose of classic soundbite snipits from the movie (a la Pulp Fiction). When I first got this soundtrack I was reading the playlist and thought "who are all these artists?" Now I will go out of my way to find their albums. The whole CD is great driving music - don't skip any songs!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-02-05

In the mid-to-late '80s, it was impossible to go anywhere without hearing the Stock, Aitken and Waterman sound (otherwise known as S-A-W). Their sugar-pop sound, assembled on their well-oiled assembly line was detested by critics, but loved by music fans, who couldn't resist S-A-W's penchant for making catchy, albeit empty, songs. From Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" to Kylie's "I Should Be So Lucky" to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", nobody made catchier pop than S-A-W. Those hits, plus many others are featured on this 3-disc set, which captures a memorable era (roughly 1985-1990) of pop music. I'm sure critics still hate it, but come on, admit it: you love S-A-W!

This excellent compilation is worth the import price.

3 out of 5 stars Great for what it is...........2006-12-09

...but there is one major flaw, in my book anyway: there is absolutely no inclusion of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. What happened? Compilers saw fit to include the likes of Cliff Richard (???...to quote The Young Ones, "Oh Cliff, sometimes it must be difficult not to feel as if, you really are a cliff, when Fascists keep trying to push you over it, are they lemmings? Or are you Cliff? Or ARE you Cliff?"), but did not include the fall out boys of Generation X? Whatever. Still, it's a very good compilation, with a nifty difty DVD that can be bought separately. But, if you're looking for those SAW mixes and the like of "Success" and such by SSS, go for one of their (SSS) compilations.

5 out of 5 stars 1989 Again........2006-05-08

Their songs are shamelessly formulaic, beat-driven, just-add-water dance pop. Still, I give this compilation five stars, the highest rating you can give to any product on this website. You think I'm nuts? Maybe I am, but it's in the opinion of this reviewer that Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman were among the best songwriters of the mid-to-late 1980s. During that time frame, these guys ruled the UK (and, to a much lesser degree, the US) charts with their flighty, perky pop hits that resulted in platinum discs and Number Ones for Kylie, Dead or Alive, Rick Astley, and Jason Donovan among others. It'd be technically impossible to compile every major SAW hit on a 3-CD set, but "Gold" is still worth your time. For one, the songs are superbly remastered, and for this American reviewer, I'm hearing many of these tracks for the first time on CD. This set has the predictable hits from Kylie, Jason, Rick, and Bananarama, but the true thrill is listening to the lesser tracks, some of which have long been out-of-print. Brother Beyond's Mowtown-lite confections "The Harder I Try" and "He Ain't No Competition" sound even better today than they did in 1988. Divine's flamingly fierce "You Think You're a Man" appears twice: the single edit and the extended 12-inch version. Sonia's "You'll Never Stop Me Loving You" and "Big Fun"'s Jacksons cover "Blame it on the Boogie" are cheesy fun, while Samntha Fox's guilty pleasure "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now" is Ni-NRG bliss. Those who like their pop high on the cheese factor will find delight in the Reynolds Girls' "I'd Rather Jack," a song so aggressively awful that it qualifies as a dance camp classic. We get a triple dose of this single: it appears in its editied and 12-inch version (Disc three has 10 extended 12-inch tracks), and it's included in the 13-minute PWL Megamix. This isn't the first SAW compilation of this kind, but for those who want remastered quality and to relive the glory years of the 1980s should click "add to cart." Give me Stock Aitken Waterman over Britney, Justin Timberlake, and the Backstreet Boys any day.

3 out of 5 stars S/A/W for dummies.......2006-03-25

Pete Waterman spews out yet another compilation which I call 'The Hit Factory volume 6'. And yes there were five such compilations prior to this release all that are now out of print and hard to find except on ebay. This set is not much different than the rest except it has three CD's, one of which contains only 12" versions of various songs.

If anyone was an avid collector of S/A/W, they'd have 95% if not all these songs in their cd/vinyl/mp3 collection. This CD set would be excellant for those just discovering the wonder that is S/A/W, but long time fans would be tired of the same old songs (even if they are classic staples) showing up on every compilation. Granted, there are a few songs that are real gems such as Donna Summer's 'I don't want to get hurt' (the remixed 7" version apparently), the cheesy, yet catchy version of Big Fun's Blame it on the Boogie and the brilliant 'Listen to your Heart' by Sonia. Personally they should've left out 'I'd Rather Jack' by the Reynold Girls. The song is simply dreadful and hard on the ears. The video (I'm not sure if this is available on the DVD version of S/A/W GOLD) is a major eyesore; corny is an understatment here. Not only does the song appear as the normal radio version, they HAD to include the 12" version AND in the megamix! Enough already! They also should have left out Ferry Across the Mercy and Let it Be. Put in some rare songs in place of these dreadful remakes!

Included in CD2 is Mandy's version of Kylie's 'Got to Be Certain' which is just Mandy's vocals inserted into the original production. Not really anything special. Kylie's more suited for the song, in my opinion anyways.

CD3 has only 12" versions of various S/A/W songs including the wonderful Mad March Hare mix of Kylie's 'Better the Devil', the boring, droned out 'Roadblock' by S/A/W themselves and a megamix. S/A/W does not excel in sequencing their songs as 'A Ton of Hits' proved, but if you want to complete your collection, here is a new megamix for your listening pleasure (or displeasure...).

If you want a great S/A/W related non-stop megamix CD, I strongly suggest 'Dance Paradise - PWL Perfect Hits' which is a Japanese release and a bit expensive, but very much worth it. Do a search. This was not sequenced together by S/A/W themselves and it shows.

Here's hoping that Hit Factory volume 7 (probably called Stock Aitken Waterman Gold II) will have some thought put into the song selections.

3 out of 5 stars Wrong versions.......2006-01-29

Spent $30 on this as an import, hoping that the 11-minute version of "Say I'm Your number One" by Princess would be included. The "12-inch version" is the same un-remixed track that was reissued at a budget price by Disky on "Maximum 80s."

Ben Liebrand, please, please, please, put the right version of "Number One" on the next "Grand 12-inches," and next time, guys, why not ask a DJ or a 12-inch retailer which versions are the rarest and most in need of reissue?

5 out of 5 stars Rhino rules.......2005-07-09

AS with their other recordings, Rhino makes the MGM catalogue sound like it was recorded yesterday. Couple that with the excellent graphics and liner notes and you have a movie soundtrack lover's dream come true

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive soundtracks. As complete as you can get........2004-06-23

This movie soundtrack compilation from Rhino of ?Summer Stock? and ?In the Good Old Summertime? has all of the music from both films, including some outtakes. One minor drawback ? some songs have all extraneous material removed, such as dialogue bridges, tap sounds, etc. It gives them a somewhat flat sound. Overall, though, this a great CD for fans of these movies. Sound quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars awesome album!.......2004-03-27

This is a must-buy! If you've ever had a chance to see Gary Jules at the Hotel Cafe in LA, you know how incredible this guy is. 'St. Christopher's Lullaby' is an essential anthem for anyone in love. 'Ghosts' will leave you positively shaken!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxed and flowing.......2003-04-01

Gary Jules puts together a tremendous CD that combines his instrumental knowledge with his voice. The result is a flowing, relaxed sound that puts you at ease. If you've listened to "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack you know what an amazing talent this man is. Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful folk rock and stunning vocals.......2002-11-16

Gary Jules is one of LA's best local artists, and one of my favorite artists of all time. He manages to say a lot with very little, and I've not heard him sing a single song that I haven't liked. This is a great debut, with a good variety of sounds; some of my absolute favorite tunes on this album are "Owen Down", "Push", and "Heroes and Heroin". I also very strongly recommend Gary's most recent album, "Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets", which includes the tune most folks are probably familiar with, the cover of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. ...
