5 out of 5 stars Connie Francis Millennium Collection.......2007-05-29

This CD is Great!!! I forgot what a great singer Connie was and still is. It's wonderful to hear some of her all time hits like Stupid Cupid, Who's Sorry Now, etc. Takes me back to my high school days.

5 out of 5 stars Oooh, my happiness !!!.......2007-03-09

Connie Francis possessed a wonderful voice when she was in her prime in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Her rich, warm and vibrant voice attracted much deserved attention wherever and whenever she performed. Connie performed later on in her life but the songs on this CD do indeed represent her very best work.

The CD starts off with one of Connie's signature songs entitled "Who's Sorry Now?" Connie breathes new life into this much older song; and her voice charms you as Connie expresses every little nuance in all the lyrics to this song. The musical arrangement reflects forethought; the chorus in the background adds a certain type of poignancy to this ballad. "Stupid Cupid," a song with a much more lighthearted set of lyrics, follows this. The melody is catchy and the arrangement again makes use of a chorus to enhance the beauty of the song. Connie sings this to perfection!

Other great ballads on this CD include "My Happiness" conducted by the very talented David Rose; the strings on this number complement the beauty of Connie's voice brilliantly. No wonder all of the songs on this track set charted very high! "Lipstick On Your Collar" boasts a somewhat happy, silly melody that belies the sadness Connie expresses as she sings of her man who cheated on her. "Among My Souvenirs" features Connie and the musicians in total harmony--fantastic! "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" deals with unrequited love; and "Where The Boys Are" explores Connie's desire to find her one true love.

"Mama" sports a beautiful musical intro; and Connie sings so sensitively about her late mother that you will invariably begin to think of your own mother. Many people will relate to this song; and the lyrics that are in Italian infuse this ballad with a bittersweet sentimentality that one rarely finds in even the greatest of ballads. Connie's voice is in perfect form; and the strings on this number add a certain dramatic effect that make you miss your own mother regardless of whether she is living apart from you or she has passed.

The CD ends very strong with the exceptionally upbeat "Vacation." I like how the remastering kept the slight echo effect of Connie's voice as she gleefully expresses the excitement of being young and free from school "under summer stars." This song packs such a wallop that you want to jump up and dance for joy just listening to it! The melody is so catchy that it is positively infectious; you won't forget this number anytime soon!

The liner notes have wonderful color photos of Connie and you also get an essay about Connie written by Joseph F. Laredo.

Connie Francis dominated the charts for several years in the late 1950s and early 1960s--and for good reason, too. Hers was a young, fresh voice that expressed so many emotions precisely the way people experienced them in real life. People could relate to Connie for her energy as well as the topics of which she sang.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of Connie Francis and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this CD, too.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Connie Francis.......2007-01-13

I enjoyed listening to the CD very much. I enjoy 'oldies' music but I just wish that for a millennium collection there would have been more selections on this CD. Still, I'm very glad that I purchased it.

1 out of 5 stars HO HUM.......2006-05-20

Americans only seem to remember Connie for her many hits which was not her best material. It made her famous and rich and sent her career sailing farther than any other female singer. But the great Connie Francis can be found in her later work Try "Standards", the 3 South Africian collections (hard to get). You'll hear the REAL Connie. I am glad people are still buying her records, even if it is the oft time released hit collections, but she deserves better and should be acknowledged as the fine song stylist that she still is...as she currently tours and the audiences love her. Bravo Connie. You are one of the very few fine singers left that can still carry a tune. And boy can you carry it! WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Saint Francis........2005-11-15

Connie Francis was the Maria Callas of Pop music. Her incredible popularity in the 1950's and early 1960's was unmatched.... she was the girl every father wanted for a daughter and every boy wanted for his girl. Her singular, sing-songy, heartbreaking voice was very similar to that of the great Patsy Cline's, partly in fact that not only did they both have that little "cry" in their voice, that almost no one can do successfully, but also in that they could take pretty much any material, no matter how minor, and make it good, sometimes great. But fame and popularity are usually followed by heartache, and Connie Francis' career was no exception. It was dominated and controlled, we later learned, by her domineering and controlling father, who made her every career decision, based on what he and the industry perceived to be her good-girl image. He famously kept a hawk-like watch on his precious commodity/daughter, including destroying the relationship with the person that she always referred to as the love of her life, Bobby Darin. Her career waned in the 1960's, due mostly to changing musical tastes, but she had forever carved out a solid niche as one of the most popular girl singers of the 20th century. She continued to perform in public, mostly in smaller venues. It was while appearing in such a place, in Westbury, New York, that the now famous, very violent sexual assault occurred , forever changing her life.
The great career, and, apparently, the great voice had ended. Bad marriages and bad business decisions followed, along with family tragedies. She retreated from public life, save for the occasional tabloid intrusion. Further publicity surrounded not only her lawsuit against The Westbury, where her assault occurred, but that the trauma of that event had caused her to permanently lose her voice. Her behavior was reported to be increasingly erratic. She further withdrew. She did not reappear for years, until she authored her auto-biography, where many of the facts from her pained past came to light. Anyone who saw her comeback on Dick Clark's show around this same period will never forget it. This girl that was so loved by so many had her voice back, and the audience reaction and the tears in Dick Clark's eyes were a natural, spontaneous, honest reaction to a totally unstaged, rare outpouring of genuine affection, that had more to do with sincere appreciation than in maybe the perfection or imperfection of her voice. About 10 years or so ago, a group of my friends and I saw that she was appearing in Ft.Lauderdale, so we thought we'd have a laugh and go see her, it'd be fun in a campy kind of way....very "Where The Boys Are." Well, any preconceived thoughts about the reasons why we were attending quickly gave way to awe at the way this lady had this audience in the palm of her hand from the moment she swept onstage. It wasn't a performance...she was there amongst friends that she knew loved and admired her. When she introduced her mother to the audience from the front row, then proceeded to sing one of her greatest hits, "Mama", directly to her in a voice that reached the heavens, well....there was not a closed jaw nor dry eye in the house, and the standing ovation that sprung up on the last incredible notes was only a reflex to true greatness. I have had very few moments like this in live performing, and I've seen alot of them. This is the kind of reaction and loyalty Connie Francis elicits, due not only in that she represents nostalgia for an increasingly bygone time and innocence, but that her natural talent and beautiful voice brought joy to so many, from grandmothers to teens to the troups in VietNam. This 20th Century Masters Collection is a good place not only to reacquaint yourself to the voice and songs that will undoubtedly bring a big smile to your face and a tear to your eye, but also for those not acquainted with this voice that was such a big part of Pop music , and allows her to remain one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Though Connie Francis leads a very private life, and has been out of the spotlight for many years, her inherent dignity and musical legacy will always insure a big spot in the hearts of those millions that her music touched. God Bless you Dear Lady, and thanks for all the joy.

    4 out of 5 stars A LATE REVIEW.......2006-05-22

This was one of Connie's very first CDs to be released in this country and doing a second "Best Of" would br extremely difficult considering the ground she has covered. Not everyone will be satisfied. This collection follows the hits formula and some of the songs may not be quite as well known to many. Her version of "Time Alone Will Tell" is nothing short of miraculous. The power and the passion is all there in one song. This is a good example of why she is not only the biggest selling and most versatile singer, but simply the best female entertainer in the business...bar none. A good collection with great sound. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A REAL KNOCKOUT CD!!!!.......2003-09-05

I have hundreds of CDs by hundreds of artists. If I had to relinquish all but one, this is the one I would keep. You may as well remove your socks before listening, cuz Connie's gonna knock 'em off anyway. There's a few of her standard top forty hits included, but the real magic and power comes in her renditions of the Italian love songs. You'll never hear a bigger, more powerful voice. And there's still plenty of the wistful Connie when she sings about Mama. She's truly one of our great American treasures.

2 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......1999-03-09

An odd assortment of Connie Fracis recordings spanning 1960-1967. This set contains some chart hits as well as obscure recordings that may not interest the casual fan. This highlights the "champagne" Connie which appealed mostly to her adult following. Not focused enough to be an effective overview as the title might suggest. If you want the big hits, see the first volume.

5 out of 5 stars Not The Usual Connie Francis Hits - Refreshing.......1999-02-02

Connie's Volume 2 of hits contains tracks out of the ordinary million sellers usually heard. There are excellent tracks on this CD. I Was Such A Fool is one of her best - listen to the intonations and emphatics! For Mama is a 1965 release that many recorded, but only Connie did it justice. Malaguena and Time Alone Will Tell reflect her passion and excitement. Connie handles all of the tracks in her usual signature manner.

    4 out of 5 stars NICE REISSUE.......2006-05-21

Another reissue of hits and a walk down memory lane. The Japanese are more creative in there selection of songs and the sound quality is far superior to their competitors. This release offers nothing new for the Connie fan, but for those who are not familiar with her or those that are just nostalgia prone, this is the route to go. Her hits were never her best material but it's nice to see Connie Francis product on the market rather than no product at all. So keep it coming. Universal/Polydor, those who know her best work are still waiting a bit impatiently for good stuff. But hats off to Japan. They always put out quality Connie Francis cds and this fan is greatful and pleased to have it. Their admiration and respect is evident--something her native country could learn from the Land of the Rising Sun. Kudos Japan!

1 out of 5 stars Should Have Never Came Out With This Album...........2004-12-23

This album as one reviewer said has no original material on it. It is just remixes & remakes of all of her songs. Don't waste your 15 dollars on this cd. It is not worth it. I don't see why they just don't re-release her classic debut that came out in 1986. Anyway for anyone who likes the original songs AVOID this album. I would just look on ebay and see if I can come across a copy of her 1986 self-titled debut.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money........2004-06-26

Being a fan of Connie's "Funky Little Beat" I decided to give this Greatest Hits complilation a try. Unfortunately I was very disappointed to find out that this album does not have the original versions of Connie's songs. All of the tracks contained on this disc are (rather lame) remixes of Connie's original hits. Best to look elsewhere if you're looking for classic Freestyle.

    4 out of 5 stars Appealing.......2003-01-12

I love Connies' songs. She has a very nice voice that is good for the Freestyle is does. Freestyle is dance-pop with latin elements. Some highlights are "Funky Little Beat" and "Exprience" which are her first two singles. If you enjoy Freestyle and Dance music in general, give this album a try.

Seriously, this really is one of the BEST CDs we ever bought because it features such a wide variety of Italian songs. It has just the right mix of classical, retro and fun Italian music. 5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER JAPANESE GEM.......2007-05-29

This CD is similar to Japan's BEST OF CONNIE FRANCIS. The cover is similiar as is the track listings with a few exceptions. Both are really different from each other but have the famous Japanese sonics and their ability to put together compilations that contain hits and hard to find Lp tracks. No other country has attempted this feat successfully. This disc, as most of the Japanese collections are career spanning and the later Lp tracks are the most interesting. These songs displays Connie's change from a "teen idol" to a legitimate entertainer and foremost interpretor of classic American songs. She can hold her own with the big boys like Sinatra, Crosby and others and ranks her among the best.

Included are some some seldom seen Italian tracks never released in the US (the Japanese have an affinity for her singing in this language) and her renditions of such Bacharch classics WALK ON BY and the slow tempo, high powered WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW is a classic take on this song. She also takes over Sinatra's STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT. Her full throttled, emotion-laden version leaves his in the background making this the definitive take on this classic movie theme.

And again, we have that tremendous, best in the world, Japanese sound. You can't go wrong--this disc has everything: hits to please those who love tripping down memory lane, and the mature vocals on modern Pop classic songs.

It was an almost tearful experience to hear this album. We were expecting a compilation of original recordings. Instead, we discovered all our favorite songs had been re-recorded. While Connie remains a vibrant woman with a voice capable of expressing each song, it is not what we wanted.

This album should have an indication noting its nature. We still want a CD copy of the original recordings.
