J.J. Cale penned two of Eric Clapton's career-defining solo hits, "Cocaine" and "After Midnight." And since Clapton has often fashioned his persona in a WWJD manner (what would J.J. do?), this collaboration is long overdue. But despite the rather slick production and long list of guest backing musicians (including four bassists, four drummers, five other guitarists, and three percussionists), The Road to Escondido is still dominated more by Cale than Clapton. The relatively reticent Okie wrote 11 of the 14 tracks, and it's his low-key soufflé of blues, jazz, and country that shapes and directs the disc's tone, with Clapton along for the ride. The opening "Danger" sets the dusky mood as the duo rides a typical Cale swamp groove that gives way to a tightly wound Slowhand solo. They trade lead vocals on a lovely version of the after-hours jazz blues classic "Sporting Life Blues," and the ubiquitous John Mayer makes an impressive appearance on the subtle blues of "Hard to Thrill."
Clapton hasn't sounded this relaxed or involved in his own material for years. The traditionally laid-back, if not quite snoozy, Cale responds with a comparatively energized performance, likely due to the high-profile company. When the two harmonize on the mid-tempo foot tapper "Anyway the Wind Blows," the result is so natural and spontaneous it's a shame these two didn't join forces earlier. On paper, it appears that Cale has the most to gain from partnering with an established superstar, but the fact is this collaboration yields Eric Clapton's most engaging and contagious roots-rock release in a long time. --Hal Horowitz
From Amazon.ca
They say you can't go home again, but don't tell Eric Clapton. Quick on the heels of his vaunted Cream reunion/boomer wet dream, the English guitar legend teamed with influential Tulsa country-blues fixture J.J. Cale, writer of early Clapton solo hits "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," and a slate of then 'n' now all-stars (including some of the final performances by keyboard great Billy Preston) to reinvent the guitarist's laid-back '70s groove for a new era. The result is one of the most grounded and satisfying Clapton releases in many a year, a true musical collaboration with the guitarist's own longtime hero that coaxes their muses down familiar, if still refreshing, musical avenues.
The album's billing seems more than merely alphabetical: Cale pens 11 of the tunes, with Clapton contributing the gentle acoustic folk-pop of "Three Little Girls" and John Mayer offering up the slinky, jaded blues "Hard to Thrill," where fellow fret god Albert Lee adds his touch to Clapton's countrified revival. But it's the interplay between Cale and Clapton that carries the day throughout, from the signature sound of "Danger" and single "Ride the River" and the Deadhead-friendly vibes of the shuffling "Missing Person" and "When the War Is Over" to their deliciously languorous cover of "Sporting Life Blues." Clapton's playing is as lyrical as ever, yet channeled into a savory heartland mindset that's anything but clichéd. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
After years of admiring each other's musical masterworks, guitar great J.J. Cale and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer/Grammy-winner Eric Clapton have teamed up to create an original album together called The Road to Escondido. The resulting hybrid sound defies labels, and instead finds influence across the spectrum of blues, rock, country, and fold. The songs are warm and rich with deep-flowing rhythms while using an economy of words to express much.

Great pairing.......2007-05-14
Finally, an album I can use for cruisin' in the car, or dance to if the mood strikes! Cale's and Clapton's styles are wonderfully complimentary. Sure, maybe the album is a bit reminiscent of the '70s, and doesn't explore new territory, but there was lot of FINE and fun music that came out then, which made us SMILE. It's great these two legends chose to reiterate that feeling, including other notables to team up with them.
pleased.......2007-05-13
the guitar playing by both is fantastic, I would like to see Eric and JJ on tour together, what a concert that would be, imagin!!!!!!!!
a good lesson on how a rock star gracefully ages .......2007-04-07
Eric Clapton has made it thru much in the past 40 years: drugs and alcohol, personal tragedy, and horrible 80's synthesizers. This CD is just plain good-it doesn't try to be something it's not, and Clapton doesn't have to prove he's a guitar god anymore. J.J. Cale writes some good bluesy rock songs and together they sound great. The addition of Dereck Trucks on slide guitar is terrific, as is Billy Preston on the organ. This recording is not "slick" or "overproduced" as some have said-it sounds smooth, clear and accurate. I have a feeling that this CD will receive regular playing time on my stereo for many, many years.
The Road to Escondido.......2007-03-30
This is the latest in the "Best-Of" For Clapton to unifiy with JJ Cale with Taj Mahal's harmonica, JJ Cale's band, this is sincerely one of the finest sounds I have heard from either of them. They have picked a few of John's best songs and melded their voices and their guitars. Clapton wanted to learn Cale's studio techniques and if he didn't he wasn't watching. This will be one of my favorites for a long time to come and one I will turn other's on to.
Great CD.......2007-03-27
Finally J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton have got together,
Tha album is great and shows Clapton in another light by playing Cale style. Great songs and an all Round listening pleasue

As best-of collections go, this one is uncommonly understated. Which is probably appropriate given that the singer/songwriter it celebrates is one of the most taciturn rock & rollers to ever saunter down a dusty road. Decades into a career that has produced more commercial success than one might suppose, Cale's Very Best consists of one disc; outtakes and rarities padding a second disc don't fit Cale's less-is-more aesthetic. There's no essay elevating the Oklahoman as a great blues-rock pathfinder, though Eric Clapton and Dire Straits are among the platinum performers who owe him a debt; just musician credits and a modest dedication from Cale adorn the booklet. (Hey, at least the camera-shy Cale sat still for a photo shoot!) As for the music, this 20-song CD consists of a representative selection of hits for himself ("Crazy Mama" and "Lies" charted early in his career) and his partisans (Clapton scored with "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," while Lynyrd Skynyrd made "Call Me the Breeze" a concert staple). The case could easily be made that Cale deserves something a bit more ambitious than this unambiguous overview, but who's going to make the case for the man? Not low-profile J.J., that's for sure. --Steven Stolder

Brilliance Of Simplicity.......2007-05-28
J.J. CALE epitomizes what is the brilliance of simplicity - that less is more, is best. CALE is, perhaps, one of the very few finer singer-songwriter craftsmen who can transport you to other worldly dimensions through his pure, raw, yet polished, finely executed recordings. He takes you by surprise, totally unexpected. I remember hearing him all over the radio during my early teens while his classic albums such as "NATURALLY" - "TROUBADOUR" - "OKIE" - "REALLY" were getting well deserved, cherry picked AM/FM Radio airplay for his definitive extraterrestialistic tracks such as "CRAZY MAMA" - "LIES" - "AFTER MIDNIGHT", among others. Cale's artistic legend grew by leaps and bounds, and he's not to be omitted from a music lover's library. His recordings will transport you to the stratosphere[and beyond]of your imagination. He leaves a highly memorable impression which, in turn, creates an unfathomed curiosity and intrigue even on the most casual listener of his mysterious vocals and guitar playing from his legendary recordings. "VERY BEST OF..." easily eclipses Cale's "SPECIAL EDITION" hits summary and his personal edition on the "20th Century Masters Millenium"[remastered]series, while it appears to be a pared down one disc version of CALE's expansive, stellar career overview 50 track, two-disc anthology, "ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS". None of the above mentioned compilations should be dismissed, as all four contain tracks that criss-cross one another, plus various tracks of importance from his almost four decade long catalogue. Any J.J. CALE retrospective is worth every cent and dollar you spend, because every disc flows with gems. Cale's personal versions of both his own 'hits' and famously 'covered' compositions are timeless.
The Very Best of the Very Best..........2007-05-03
I was in high school when I first heard "Crazy Mama." I ran out and bought the 45--a thing we regularly did in antideluvian times before CDs and MP3 players were invented. As much as I loved "Crazy Mama," the flip side--"Don't Go to Strangers"--was far better, in my opinion. I gave "The Very Best of" a 4 rating instead of a 5 because it doesn't include "...Strangers." Even so, you can't go wrong with the "best of" the guy Clapton goes to for inspiration. If you don't know J. J. Cale yet, or haven't heard "Call Me the Breeze" from his "Live" album, you're missing out!
The Very Best of JJ Cale.......2007-01-16
If you used to have all the JJ Cale on vinal, this is the CD you need to start replenishing your collection!
Jazz gets the Blues.......2007-01-09
JJ Cale is a master of his art. He paints a clear and precise picture in his songs. Considered to be a Songwriter 1st and a Guitar player second, he influenced Skynard, Clapton, and many others. The classic version of Cocaine is contained here, in this definitive collection of Cale's original tunes. As well as Call me the Breeze and After Midnight.
An thoroughly enjoyable set .......2006-11-16
JJ Cale is a songwriter best known for having his works covered by other artists like Eric Clapton, Deep Purple and Lynyrd Skynyrd. While I don't generally favor 'best of' albums prefering to dig into an artists body of work, this one stands as an exception. It's a wonderful introduction to the world of JJ Cale with his layed back bluesy guitar sound and country-like sensabilities.
An excellent look into the world of JJ Cale. Highly recommended.

Crème de la crème.......2007-01-18
Best Cale in my opinion, must-have for anyone interested in blues beyond the founding fathers (L. Hopkins, R. Johnson, M. Waters, H. Wolf). I first heard songs from this record as a grad student in Berkeley, recently arrived from Brazil in 1983, on KFOG, the rock SF station. They used to play Bringing it Back and it took me a few auditions to get the name of the artist. When I did I went to the Tower store on Durant and bought it. Then I realized he was the composer of After Midnight (known through Clapton's version), and Cale has been a favourite since. His last, a partnership with Clapton (Road to Escondido) is also very good, in fact, Clapton is better there than in most of his solo albums, and his singing somehow lost the usual high-key stridency, certainly influenced by the zen-like ways of Cale. Naturally, with its fairy-tale like cover, would be among my DIDs. By the way, one also guesses, through this record, a strong influence on M. Knopfler , both as guitar man and composer. Highly recommended.
Bringing it back.......2006-09-01
I have trouble deciding my favourite Cale's album but this one is a strong candidate for the first place (the other ones are "Okie" and "Shades" and, to some extent, his latest Live recordings).
"Naturally" features the original "After Midnight" that many Clapton fans will recognize, though they are unaware of being Cale's composition. Actually few people know that Clapton himself declared that Cale's music was like mentorship to him.
This is a very misty album. Due to the recording, all tunes have a shadow of damping of the hi-key dynamics which make them more fit for the general atmosphere of the music. I've always wondered if it's not a trick of the recording engineer because the vinyl is exactly the same. The music is absolutely marvelous. I have it also on the vinyl but I order it on CD because I listen it VERY often. "Magnolia" and "After Midnight" are may favourites. Listening these tunes I feel the same as being awakened from a beautiful dream in a warm summer morning. Very mellow but not sweet, exactly as they should be. The cover of the CD says it all: it is like Alice in Wonderland.
Thats why they call him the breeze.......2005-10-11
I have to admit that i stumbled on this cd accidentally , i knew who jj cale was , i knew his songs , but i never actually listened to his versions of his own songs like they call me the breeze and after midnight, i only bought it because i have a hidden urge to buy all the albums which were originally released between 1969 and 1973 . I just cant put to words how this album moved my soul (now i own all j j cale albums!) from the concentrated guitar work to the smoky singing of j j to the sheer genius songwriting which has influenced many including eric clapton himself! I urge every true music lover to buy this album , this cannot be compared to anything else.
Cale's music vs the shrillness of marketing.......2005-06-05
Listen to the music and you can *HEAR* the essense of
a musician who eschewed the crassness of marketing his work.
Marketing stars is shrill-- Cale's music is anything but.
Join us -- experience the ease and joy of discovering such
thoughtful sounds long ago buried by all the hype
for high-profile music which is essentially pushy/shrill.
Non-shrill and "laid back" does NOT mean 'without content.'
Cale's music is different -- you get drawn into the
music rather than having it pushed in your face.
Experience the feeling of being drawn into the soft textures of Cale's "After Midnight"
vs the force coming at you from the tempo in Clapton's "After Midnight."
fantastic album .......2005-05-30
I was lucky enough to live in a town when I was a kid that had a great radio station. No top 40, just great music. Exposed me to a lot of music that nobody else played. I was lucky enough to hear songs off of this album, bought it when it first came out, and then saw him in concert! He was great, and I was amazed that he was playing a cheap banged-up Harmony guitar, just like I had bought at Sears for about $50 (yeah, you could buy guitars at Sears back then). I saw him on a concert tape or tv years later, and he was still playing that old guitar.
Just saw him on the "Crossroads Guitar Festival" DVD. I would get this album and that DVD.

36 minutes isn't enough .......2007-03-09
v. good music, but this CD should have been issued as a double with another LP-length recording. as it is, 36 minutes is just too short, especially on a format that can accommodate double that volume. more and more of the early jazz recordings are being issued as doubles on a single CD, and Mercury should do the same with JJ Cale, rather than slicing the cake so thinly.

J.J. Cale's Troubadour is a timeless recording of the highest caliber. As a music lover with an extensive portfolio of rock, blues, roots, soul, jazz, and classical, this is a CD that gets played regularly. Troubadour immediately connects with the listener and will prompt friends to inquire about the artist creating the cool, laid-back sound. This is one of those ten desert island discs to consider owning. Highly recommended.

Anyway The Wind Blows: The Anthology by J.J. Cale .......2007-01-09
Great compilation of the JJ Cale songs over the years. Most or all of the hits included with a vast array of the deep cuts you will learn to love. If you don't know JJ Cale's music this is a great album to have and if you know his music, but don't own it all, this covers it well.
Buy "Okie" instead.......2006-12-06
First off let's dispense with the packaging. The writing is inane, the photos look like a bad tv ad from the 90s. (an abandoned gas station, all rust and tumbleweed, Cale posed as ever-so-"americana" scruff. Please.) Cale IS a terrific musician, and an essential listen, but you'll be better served by "Okie" or any of his albums. This anthology misses Cale's genius entirely, choosing an endless series of same tempo shuffles. A listen to Okie reveals a very varied set of songs that flow easily and present an entire world of textures and rythmns. Cale is a studio wizard, related more to Brian Eno than to the lesser talents (like Clapton) who imitate his innovations. He arranges his recordings very carefully, as engineers are wont to do, and it is all about the sequencing and layering of sounds and meaning. Taken out of context, Cale's songs can seem slight and repetitious. So skip this ill-advised collection and buy any of the albums instead.
A MUST-HAVE FOR YOUR MUSICAL LIBRARY.......2006-11-10
A great reminder of where it all started.
Any Way The Wind Blowes.......2006-02-24
A most excellent album. Finally J.J. Cale is presented to the main stream! Love It !
RR
Distilled Spirit.......2004-05-15
While I'm a big fan of JJ Cale, I've long bemoaned the poor to mediocre sound on his recordings, and the less than first rate tunes (I hesitate to use the word "filler" with JJ) that populate all but his first couple of albums. What a consumate joy to get to hear all the instruments in the (remastered) mix instead of sonic mush. And the tracks are very well selected to give you most of the best of his work. I do miss "Clyde" and "River Runs Deep" from the first album, but minor carps for a masterpiece. Might be the best record ever made by a white musician. A serious mile melter on the road. Be sure to get the DVD too.

Album Details
One of John Cale's Very Finest Solo Efforts, Paris 1919 is also Among his Most Accessible Records, One which Grows in Depth and Resonance with Each Successive Listen. A Consciously Literary Work - the Songs Even Bear Titles Like "Child's Christmas in Wales," "Macbeth," and "Graham Greene" - Paris 1919 is Close in Spirit to a Collection of Short Stories; The Songs Are Richly Poetic, Enigmatic Period Pieces Strongly Evocative of their Time and Place. Chris Thomas' Production is Appropriately Lush and Sweeping, with Many Tracks Set to Orchestral Accompaniment; Indeed, There's Little Here to Suggest Either Cale's Noisy, Abrasive Past Or the Chaos About to Resurface in his Subsequent Work - for Better Or Worse, his Music Never Achieved a Similar Beauty Again.

Great Album.......2007-02-18
There is a very good reason this classic has recently been re-released. I put it along side Odessey and Oracle and Village Green Preservation Society as high-minded pop gems that were sort of forgotten and now are getting a renewed appreciation.
Other than a little bit of a muddled production this is a first class album. The mood is melancholy, but perfectly such. Although the songs are instantly catchy, they have such depth that they won't bore.
If you like gentle, blue pop music that has a decidely British feel. Get this. Actually if you like good music at all, pick this up.
"Graham Greene" is annoying.......2006-12-17
I know I'm going to get a lot of unhelpful marks, but with the invariably perfect reviews this record is getting, I thought I should speak up. I've tried pretty hard to enjoy this CD, what with paying money for it and all, but I just don't get it. Sure, the songs are pretty, but also repetitive and somewhat bland. This isn't helped by the incredibly murky mix this album has. I was hoping the bonus tracks would provide a clearer picture of what the songs sound like, but they sound the same for the most part.
The problem is that I got this along with Vintage Violence, his first solo album. I love that one. It has a great energy to it that makes the softer tracks more engaging as well as a mix that is loud and clear. Though I can easily see Paris 1919 as a good rainy day depression disc, its hard to take most of the songs seriously enough to do so. "Hanky Panky Nohow" is a good song until the lame chorus which consists of the words "Hanky Panky Nohow." On Vintage Violence, the lyrics are just as nonsensical, but the compositions are simply more entertaining. That having been said, "Andalucia" is a great song and so is "Paris 1919" (especially the piano mix).
I keep having to replay bits of the rest of the album to remember which of the other songs I liked and which I didn't. That isn't a good sign since I have listened to it close to six or seven times now. Comparatively, I've listened to Vintage Violence once and I still remember almost all of the songs. Now, if you'll excuse, I'm going to go hum "Fairweather Friend."
All-time great album, inessential bonus tracks.......2006-08-18
I don't know what more I can add to the Paris 1919 discussion. It's arguably the best work by arguably the most unfairly obscure popular music genius of his time. If you don't already own it, stop reading and buy it!
The reissue is what I'm really reviewing, and if I were to rate it on its own I would give it three stars. It's a case of quantity over quality, with unfortunate results.
First, the good. The booklet has great new liner notes by a writer who thoroughly understands the album. Burned Out Affair, despite a flat, possibly drunken vocal, is quite interesting. Though I'm glad it was cut from the album proper, I'm equally glad to hear it. Two alternate versions are fantastic: the Drone Mix of Hanky Panky Nohow and the hidden instrumental take of Macbeth (with masterful electric slide guitar) give new insights into the material and are great listening on their own.
Second, the bad. Pretty much all the other sketches are not particularly interesting at best. The piano mix of Paris 1919, the vocal mix of Antarctica Starts Here, and the informal takes of Endless Plain of Fortune and Graham Green are all good listening, just nothing special or revealing. Some, however, have mumbled partial vocals, muddy arrangements, lyric mistakes, and pitch problems.
Sure, these things happen while recording. This is probably the most honest set of rehearsals and takes I've ever seen on a commercial record -- there appear to be no overdubs or edits of any kind. I'm not at all convinced that's a good thing, however. It seems to me that including alternate versions of every song was overkill, and even undermines the album itself with material that obviously was never meant for public consumption.
If they'd just stuck to new and revelatory versions, we'd have three or four great bonus tracks. As it is, there's an entire alternate album that's not worth more than a couple listens.
Certainly this reissue is worth buying, for the first time or even for the second. Just don't expect anything much of the bonus tracks.
Make that twelve!.......2006-07-01
There is an unlisted 21st track-- an instrumental version of 'Macbeth' featuring some fine slide guitar from Lowel George!
OMG....12 more parts of an absolute classic.......2006-06-28
I couldn't be more excited than if George Martin announced that more previously unknown parts of "Sgt. Pepper" had been found!
The 9 track original LP is just about the best LP to be released in the early 1970's (it was released in 1973) and the lousy sounding Warner Archives CD has remained a good catalog seller after all these years.
Now, UK Rhino has released a 20 track CD (US Rhino is too damn stupid to put it out here....). Even tho at the time of this review, Amazon has not updated their listing. Here's the extra tracks:
10.Burned Out Affair (amazing outtake....slightly flat vocals...could've used another take)
11.Child's Christmas In Wales (alt version)
12.Hanky Panky Nohow (drone mix)
13.The Endless Plain Of Fortune (alt version)
14.Andalucia (rehearsal)
15.MacBeth (alt version)
16.Paris 1919 (string mix)
17.Graham Greene (rehearsal)
18.Half Past France (alt version)
19.Antarctia Starts Here (rehearsal)
20.Paris 1919 (piano mix)
21.HIDDEN TRACK; Macbeth (wild unissued backing track!)
.....wow these are just plain fabulous....early versions, rough rehearsals, alternative versions of 9 of the greatest pieces of serious pop music ever!)
Anyone who like this classic album needs this reissue.
Wouldn't it be nice for Amazon to update their listing?

From Bach to Doo Wop & Beyond.......2005-10-07
Of all the artists in my large and eclectic music collection, J.J. holds a unique position: I never tire of him and he has the most tunes by any one artist on my iPod. (I only load my favorite tunes onto my 'Pod--hardly ever an entire album.)
J.J. Cale's music is timeless. It enters the ears and mind like a caress from someone you love and who loves you. Picture some musicians sitting on a porch in the country South. They're all playing to the same groove, black and white together, known each other forever, and we're talking the blues. Now you get the idea.
If you're reading this, you're probably already a fan and you know what I'm talking about. If you're not that familar with J.J., I'm going to recommend you buy the double album "Anyway the Wind Blows."
I think it is useful to know any particular reviewer's musical tastes; it lets you know if he or she is in sync with your own preferences.
OK, here goes with an abbreviated list: Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Glen Gould, John Cage etc., Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Armstrong, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, Dizzy, Ellington, Coltrane, Nina Simone, The Chieftans, etc., Doo Wop, early Elvis, Chuck Berry, Dylan, Stones, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mark Knophler/Dire Straits, Bob Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Radiohead, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, A3, Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Willie, Tom Petty, Talking Heads, Roy Buchanan---I should stop here because I'm leaving too much out. I have an extensive selection of "World," whatever that means, music. And, I have a goodly number of selections, usually a song or two, of stuff from the 'nineties to present day.
If I had to, was forced to choose, say, my absolute favorites, they'd be: Dylan, Hendrix, J.J., Miles Davis, and Bach. And "Sun Sessions" Elvis.
I can't agree with another reviewer who claims that some J.J. tunes are "boring." And, I hope that I haven't bored you too much with this little essay.
Best of J.J.Cale (FJB/O!-music 2006).......2005-09-20
There are about 5 essential Cale-albums. This is the one without songs like After Midnight and Cocaine. Still it's the best one. Cale is as laid-back as always, but also funky and jazzy with a unique sound only to be heard on this album. I like the piano and of course the guitar is allright. Together with Naturally it's the best of the Cale-albums you can get.
Laid back and in the groove.......2004-01-30
Goin' Down was getting the radio play back when FM stations were kind of operating in the underground mode. FM used to be subversive, so the programming was anything but pop and top 40.
This is a great release, showcasing the style of J.J. as only J.J. could do it. A number of his songs have been recorded by other artists. Clapton has done two that I know of (Cocaine and Tulsa Time), Merle Haggard... I'm sure there's more. J.J. used to play at the Inn of the Beginning in Cotati California (Marin County) back in the mid-70's, I saw him there a couple of times. Very down to earth music and vastly underappreciated or virtually unknown by the mainstream masses. Pick this one up, Natually was good too. These were early releases yet they displayed a developed musician who was totally into his own thing. Not many musicians were the real deal. I think J.J. was and is the embodiment of J.J. Cale, no false pretenses here. What you see is what you get. You just gotta' love honesty, it comes out in the music.
The Super Sleeper!.......2003-02-26
If you know the sound. If you know you like the sound. This is the ultimate sleeper album(as many other seem) released by J. J. Cale.Hell of a songwriter, hell of a muscian, hell of a performer.Several of the tunes could have easily been on "Anyway the Wind Blow",the greatest hits anthology. While that is a nice collection(I own it),you definately wonder where some of the VERY BEST is."Everythings Will be ALRIGHT,If you're ever in oklahoma,I'll kiss this world goodbye,Right down Here,Soulin, Ridin ,THERE ALL GREAT.mY ONLY GUESS IS THAT THE cALE ANTHOLOGY WAS TO BE A 3 DISC SET AND SOMEBODY REALLY [messed] UP.In all seriousness, its great,a must have. That is if you want the sound. The J.J. Cale sound at its best.
the white Jimmy Reed.......2003-02-04
Perhaps if Cale wasn't so eclectic, he'd be better known as one of only white guys to perform truly natural, relaxed blues. Question: how come nobody seems to know the right words to the second verse of "Goin' Down",(including Cale),?

While some artists feel the need to reinvent themselves on a regular basis or to throw together records chockfull of guest stars in order to revive flagging careers, J.J. Cale remains content to continue his reign as king of the laid-back guitar groove. Anyone who thinks it is easy to continually wring new permutations out of the back-porch choogle--Cale's calling card for near three decades--should try it some time. A little violin ("My Gal"), a stab of horns ("Chains of Love"), or some vibraphone tones ("New Lover") is all he needs to freshen the mix. While artists like Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd have scored by adding testosterone to Cale's tunes, they would be the first to admit that his music is no less potent for being more relaxed. In fact, it's the off-hand manner in which he presents his political tunes--"Stone River" (ecology), "The Problem" (the President), and "Homeless"--that gives them their poetry and power. --Michael Ross

Is this the best yet - A great album for the J.J. virgin.......2007-02-20
J.J. has done it again. Distinctly J.J. but once again with some great new sounds - this one is as fresh as ever. Is this his best yet? - could well be. Right from the kick off,"My Gal","Chains of Love","New Lover" and on and on. A must have for Foot Tapping Guitar Fans.
Great CD.......2006-10-29
I can listen to J.J. Cale night and day and never get enough. I enjoy all kinds and styles of music but this guy rates towards the top. This cd is 5 stars all the way. If you like Clapton and Knopfler mixed with blues and a soulful voice, you are going to like this cd and J.J. Cale.
True Chill Out Music.......2006-08-14
Great music for a relaxing sunny day at the beach. Despite some serious themes in the lyrics, you can put a smile on your face, have your favorite beverage or whatever, and kick back for the sunset. Having owned Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd. album for 20 years, I see why people compare Cale to Clapton, though it should be the other way around. Great album from start to finish.
6+ stars.......2006-04-25
I sometimes wonder what makes the difference between an artist and a shooting star ? I'm listening to Cale's music for almost thirty years. Actually I grew with it. From one album to another he never ceases to surprise me. Probably the difference that I'm talking about lies in some magic blend of musical wisdom, imagination, loose attitude and passion for creation. Cale has them all. This album makes no exception. It has everything from each one of his previous approaches: the misty mood of "Naturally", the punchy sound of "Troubadour", the stompy rhythms of "Shades"... For any Cale passionate this is a must. And the sound of the CD is wonderful. Just listen to "The Problem" and "Fancy Dancer" and you know what I'm about.
Amazon, is there a possibility to grant him 6 stars ?...

John Cale has one of the richest resumes in pop, with experience in avant-garde music even before he met Lou Reed and they formed the Velvet Underground. His record productions include such landmarks as the debut by the Stooges and Patti Smith's Horses. But as a solo artist, Cale has often seemed caught between his sophisticated leanings and his fondness for punky attitudes. Two early albums, Vintage Violence and Paris 1919, were the work of a highly-developed pop musician; later albums found Cale the pop provocateur dominating the show. Cale's a fairly deadpan singer, but the sweet mix of rock band instrumentation and fuller orchestration make --Paris 1919 one of his strongest efforts, and the lovely "Andalucia" one of his very best songs. If the righteous boogie of "Macbeth" sounds familiar, that's because Lowell George and Richie Hayward, guitarist and drummer of Little Feat, formed the core of Cale's studio band. --John Milward

one of the great albums of all time........2007-02-11
lush, hypnotic, elegant, subtle and beautiful. small short stories sung perfectly. mr cale's great voice is one of the most underrated instruments in rock history. over the course of 25 years i have listened to this album as much as any other album i have (up there with nick drake, v. morrison's "astral weeks," and miles davis's "kind of blue"). it still strikes chords in me that few other albums reach, all these years on. my life is richer for this recording. thanks, mr cale.
yes it's an anachronistic lush masterpiece.......2006-02-11
He's so enamoured of place-names!--lots of Sagittarius in his horoscope I believe.
Cale chose his Desert Island Discs on BBC 4, thusly:
[FYI]
1. She Belongs To Me - Bob Dylan
runners up=
Some Kinda Love - Velvet Underground
In My Room - Beach Boys
She Said, She Said - Beatles
Switching Off - Elbow
Alexandra Leaving - Leonard Cohen

Here Comes The Flood - Peter Gabriel
Interesting!
A Classic Album!.......2006-01-07
I must admit I was a little sceptical about this album beforehand; having heard that this was a very classical inspired album and that I might find it a little hard accessible. Therefore I was happily surpised to discover that this in essence is an album of mostly great songs - tastefully arranged and produced.
The classical thing is more or less only come forward on the title track and "Endless Plain of Fortune" - and even those two tracks are really just rock-ballads with an orchestered accompaniment - and both very strong tracks.
The rest of the songs are not very unlike the best material on "Vintage Violence" and "Fear".
The opening track "A Child's Christmas in Wales" is a gorgeous tune, greatly played and built up by Cale and his band, featuring Bill Payne, Richard Hayward and (not least) Lowell George on guitar. The melodic slide guitar really add to making this a song you wanna hear over and over again. "Half Past France" is another track in the same category is "Half Past France".
The most immediately catchy track is the acoustic "Hanky Panky Nohow".
Another outstanding acoustic track is "Andalucia" - heartbreaking lyrics and vocals.
The song where the Little Feat contribution is most obvious is the shuffle rocking "Macbeth", which unfortunately seems a little out of place, being pretty wild and noisy compared to the rest of the album.
"Graham Greene" is a quite funny song with a reggae-beat.
Overall Cale lyrics are mysterious, at times slightly dark, but usually delightfully thought-provoking.
The album was produced by Chris Thomas (Badfinger - Procol Harum) and with Cale's songs and arrangements he has been a part of creating another classic.
Deja vu of elegant atmospheres.......2005-11-27
This album may easily qualify as my favourite John Cale album (a toss up between Paris 1919, Fear, and Honi Soit). Granted, it's not much like the other two albums cited; Paris 1919 shows a much more tender side to Mr. Cale, and because of this, the album almost seems to coddle you through the speakers. It seems to be a reminiscent whiff, and an attempt at recapturing certain moods and atmospheres, all of which make this album feel very familiar. This is not to say that there aren't more melancholic or upbeat moments; but regardless of individual songs, the overall impression given is of some tender longing, some whistful moodiness. As other reviewers have mentioned, Mr. Cale is backed by the core of Little Feat (Lowell George, Ritchie Hayward, Bill Payne) adding superb musicianship to the mix on favourite tracks like "A Child's Christmas in Wales", "Hanky Panky Knowhow", "Andalucia", "Macbeth", and "Antarctica Starts Here". Though it's only about half an hour, this album is definitely worth the price of admission.
Wanting Farmer John Cale.......2004-08-31
No use thumbing the pages of Cale's elegant scrapbook of an autobiography, 'What's Welsh For Zen?, to glean hard data on this one melodic gem. Coming after the heady, if problematic days of the Velvets, there's barely an acknowledgement of it as he strides into his rock format. The abrasive thrashing rock of 'McBeth'(while indicating his imminent direction) serves the one discordant note. Throughout,Cale namedrops to effect learnedness without destroying the mood of a distant past. Language had been severed from lineal meaning, in rock, since Bob went electric. Pete Brown writing for Jack Bruce's towering masterpieces, 'Songs For a Sailor', & 'Harmony Row'; Keith Reid with Procul Harum, were mixing up the lyric medicine, presumably with other pharmacuticals & making sumptuous music on a par with 'Paris 1919'. That date? The birth of Surrealism,(and similar writing to Cale's efforts herein) perhaps? The Russian Revolution? Cale's singing on 1919 had a world weary distance to it, which suited the reflective jabberwocky of the songs; stretched out vowells on,'planing lakes', 'elephants that sing','looking out from here at half past France.' It was far from banal music, however saccharine the orchestral moves from strings, viola & piano Cale painted. These lyrics were baffling but made perfect poetic sense when sung. 'Locusts' was something of a revisiting to this pastoral mood but lacks the roundedness. 'Fragments of a Rainy Season' is a good retrospective concert. And some of the fuge written around the hommage to Andy Warhol is very moving stuff. Go John!

Short but good.......2007-02-27
I'm familiar with seven of J.J. Cale's albums so far--the first four, plus "Grasshopper," "#8," and "Travel Log"--and "Okie" is my favorite, just barely edging out his debut album. What I like best about "Okie," aside from the fact that it's full of good tunes, is the casual, laid-back atmosphere. You could say that about all of Cale's early albums, of course, but this one takes that sound just a little farther. One of the songs was actually recorded on Cale's back porch, and two others were recorded in his house. The others were recorded in Tennessee, either at Woodland Studio B or a place called Bradley's Barn. You get the picture.
These songs are also bound together by the use of an electric piano that appears throughout, helping to create a really nice groove. A highlight is "Anyway the Wind Blows," which is driven by a great little guitar riff that was later modified slightly by Eric Clapton for "Lay Down Sally." "Everlovin' Woman," "Cajun Moon," and "I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)" also have really nice grooves. Meanwhile, the slow songs are not quite as memorable, but none of them are duds by any means.
As usual, the songs are all short--the entire album clocks in at just under 30 minutes. It's as if Cale thinks he would be showing off if he extended them any longer. And he's got so many good riffs that he's happy to trot out a new one every two or three minutes. If you like your albums longer than this, I have a suggestion: Play it twice in a row.
J.J. Cale's "Okie" is Okey Dokey .......2005-09-12
It has the cool sound of J.J. first effort. There are some
great tunes too. I don't think it's exceptional Cale, but
worth owning and checking out.
JJem .......2005-08-04
Well, this album rolls along like a river with the patented JJ groove. Nothing leaps out at you like that catfish over there. I can stare at the waves in a river a long time. Maybe they get into my head in places I don't want to go. Same sort of thing goes on with the songs here...I've worn out this album. If you like it, you'll love it. If not, maybe, when you feel like kicking back it's a good idea to give it another try. Thanks JJ.
Another Solid J.J.Cale Album........2002-04-27
This is another solid J.J.Cale album from way back in 1974. This one's not as good as Naturally or Troubadour, but it has a few great songs like: I'll Be There, Everlovin' Woman, & Any Way The Wind Blows.
