    It was 1980 and Elvis was on a roll. Four albums in four years - and still 20 peerless, unstopabble, impossible impassioned, & craftily clever tracks that somehow didn't manage to make the cut? Amazing how there are 20 "leftovers" here on one LP (now OOP CD) and not one bad apple in the whole bunch. This is Costello at his cocky, confident peak of his powers, loaded with unlimited potential and an unrivaled master working at the height of his gifts - WOW. Why is this OUT OF PRINT?!

    "Taking Liberties" is a collection of songs that didn't make it on to Elvis Costello's first 4 releases. Actually, that's not quite right since two of the tracks here -- (I Don't Want to go to) Chelsea" and "Night Rally" -- were on the UK versions of "This Years Model." The songs are great, led by a loving "Hoover Factory", a nice remake of Betty Everett's "Getting Mighty Crowded", his version of "Girls Talk" which Dave Edmunds made a hit, "Crawling to the U.S.A.", and the aforementioned songs from "This Years Model." Originally released in 1980, it's remarkable that EC had released four LP's in 4 years and still had leftovers for "Taking Liberties."

    At any rate, with the exception of "Black & White World" (which is an alternate take of a song from "Get Happy!!") every track on this CD is available on the Rhino re-releases of "My Aim is True", "This Years Model", "Armed Forces", and "Get Happy!!", with most of the songs coming from the last two. If you already have these four CD's and don't plan on buying the Rhino remasters, then "Taking Liberties" is a good option.

I'll let you in on a little secret: his tunes are often just as much fun as they are insightful!!! There are unlimited reasons why Elvis Costello is firmly implanted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Taking Liberties is a hell of a good time. Your friends will thank you for giving them all a listen to it!

    Don McCloskey is a singer songwriter from Bristol, Pennsylvania who draws inspiration from folk singers, MCs, TV Evangelists, conmen and junk mail. His fearless creativity in experimenting with form and lyrical content has earned him mainstream radio play, national touring spots and a dedicated fan base across the country while remaining completely independent. Here he releases his second full-length album Northern Liberties from his indie record label Lemon Hill Records. Recorded over a three-month period in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, Northern Liberties marks a welcome departure and growth from McCloskey's debut, Bombs Over Bristol. Teaming up with engineer, co-producer and musician Tom Spiker, McCloskey replaces the sampled and overdubbed digital landscape of Bombs with the stripped down organic grooves provided by a powerful four-piece acoustic punk band. Former Bad Brains drummer Chuck Treece delivers a powerful performance that perfectly accompanies McCloskey's chugging acoustic guitars and rapid-fire lyrical delivery. Tom Spiker plays double duty, laying down both the rock-solid bass lines and a tapestry of textured electric guitars. The foursome is rounded off by keyboardist, George Hazelrigg, who adds color and space to the second half of the album. The overall effect of the new band is a lean, raw environment that breaths life and power into McCloskey's lyrically dense folk-hop-punk songs. Philadelphia's G.     Do yourself a favor and buy this album. Lyrically and musically, this album is one of the greatest achievements in modern-music history. Don McCloskey possess the rare ability to stimulate your mind, body and soul. I'm not going to sit here and type a review for each song; no need to, every song is amazing. I don't normally write reviews but Don & his crew deserve it. Be sure to check out his first album "Bombs Over Bristol" and check him out live the next time he is in your area.
