Like Steely Dan, The The wasn't so much a band as a personal musical conceit/alter ego, this one for English writer-performer Matt Johnson. While Johnson's "band" came of age during the English synth pop boom of the early `80s, electricity was about the only common denominator between Johnson and his fashion slave contemporaries. Indeed, the sense of conscientious outrage that informs many of the two decades worth of singles collected here fostered a perception of Johnson as something of a prickly malcontent. But fashion was never an end in itself for Johnson, even on early pop fare like "Uncertain Smile" and "Perfect." Johnson's restless creative bent has led him to remix many of these tracks anew, ensuring that this set would never be seen as mere artistic obituary. Johnson's reputation as a socio-political crank reached its zenith on tracks like "Heartland" (which decries the reverse cultural colonization of Britain by America) and "Armageddon Days" (a shotgun blast at pan-religious hypocrisy, here introduced by a hilarious parody of the Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz": "Are you ready Jesus? Yeah! / Budda? Uh-huh."), but subsequent history has only proven him sagacious. Pity that Johnson's "Armageddon" lineup was short-lived: The The was a real band in `89, with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr adding his signature sound to "The Beat(en) Generation" as well. And if anyone thought they had Johnson pegged, his acclaimed 1995 Hank Williams tribute, Hanky Panky (represented here by a riveting reinvention of the country legend's "I Saw the Light"), surely set them scratching their heads again. The set is rounded out by three strong new tracks ("Decembersunlight (Cried Out)," a duet with Liz Horsman; "Pillar Box Red"; and "Deep Down Truth," a duet with Wild Colonial Angela McCluskey). The limited-edition two-disc set also includes a bonus disc of eight 12" club mixes previously unreleased in the U.S. on CD. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Pillar Box Red is worth the Purchase.......2007-01-03
That song, previously unreleased and only on the $40 Box set besides this.
Also, make sure you get the limited edition release with the second disc of remixes. Some of the remixes are even better than the originals.
I strongly recommend this, and Mind Bomb, and Dusk. That should satiate you if you are a new The The fan or you want the best and aren't a audiophile completist. Enjoy!
Nice compilation!!!.......2006-07-01
For all of you who enjoy this kind of music this is a must have!!!
Even Zen Buddhists Have To Earn A Living.......2005-06-12
When I hear a large American company using The The as their soundscape on a TV commercial an earlier reaction would have been these artists are selling out...I guess I am just getting old...even Matt deserves a break and right livelihood...This compilation is fine and the existential angst conveyed is pretty unique..a lot of his music is killer, his whole approach is sincere and I could say serious but sincere works...I have been waiting for tomorrow all my life..This Is The Day, Perfect...read Alan Watts THIS IS IT, The Wisdom Of Insecurity and The Book for intellectual background. It would not surprise me if Matt Johnson did.
An Essential CD.......2003-11-02
Whether the local powers acknowledge it or not, this is an essential component of any pop CD collection. Matt Johnson has been awfully good for a very long time. His track record is as consistent as all but a very few artists over the same time period.
This CD is the place to start if you don't have The The in your collection already. Even if you do, Johnson has remixed many tracks to great effect. Excellent engineering went into creating this CD.
One thing that has always been a hallmark of Johnson's productions. Every song has a strong hook and a hypnotic beat. I'm not into the rave scene, but I would guess that these tracks get played to death at Ibiza discos. And why not? every tune is danceable and the lyrics are sodden with consciousness cleansing layering. In my case, it's just music that creates a great background for whatever I'm doing. And when I choose to actually focus in on the lyrics, I'm not disappointed. The guy actually has something to say! A bit along the lines of Roger Waters as far as world perspective is concerned. Another artist I will never grow tired of! Compare "What God Wants," on Waters' "Amused to Death" CD to The The's "Armaggedon" and you'll see what I mean.
Now I've gotta go listen to some Roger Waters tracks.
BEK
Fantastic.......2003-05-03
All the song lyrics are as relevant today as the day they were written, if not more so now. The arrangements and originality of the music and lyrics make a wonderful and powerful statement. If you have never listened to TheThe I would recommend you start now, if you are already a fan then this will not disappoint.

great but not as good as early singles.......2007-04-08
this is a great album i dont need to buy it because i bought early singles. now if your thinking about buying this i think you'd be better off getting that plus this is only singles form 1967 its only 6 songs for 31 bucks! buy early singles im not saying this is bad but the price is way too much!
now a must have esential piece of the floyd collection.......2006-07-15
I have had this particular cd in my collection about 8 years now. It is a good sample of the early works of floyd with Syd Barrett. Now that Syd has passed one into the Great Gig In The Sky, this is even more important to have in the collection because it keeps his music alive. The songs "candy on a currant bun", "apples and oranges", and "paintbox" are all difficult to find, and not on any of the official releases that i know of, so buy this album to help complete your collection.
Syd Barrett, RIP.......2006-07-12
Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This cd is an essential purchase for those wishing a taste of genius.
Pink Floyd - '1967 Singles Sampler' (EMI).......2006-03-03
This is a must-have for any and all true fans of early Pink Floyd.Either get this or the actual full length hard-to-find 'Singles' CD.For those of you who might still think 'The Wall' was Floyd's second album(I've come across a few),you have plenty of great music to catch up on.Welcome,my friends! You get Floyd's first three 7" singles on this CD reissue, both A+B sides.Tracks that are sure to please are "Arnold Layne",the catchy "Scarecrow",the obscure but nicely penned "Apples And Oranges" and "Paintbox".How about the cover?Isn't it priceless?Highly recommended.
Syd Shines On.......2005-07-12
I agree with the previous reviewer (Great Psychedelic Pop!) with a couple of small corrections/comments: I think it's a tambourine or another percussion instrument, not the cymbals, that's mixed too loudly in Apples And Oranges; and, Norman Smith (the EMI staff producer on most of these tracks) would have to be credited ahead of Rick Wright in shaping the overall sound in the studio at this point. For my money, however, Joe Boyd (their original producer) was the man they needed in the producer's chair for these early recordings.
I must add that Rick Wright showed great promise as a songwriter (and vocalist) here and on several other early tracks, but he seems to have been convinced by the other band members that his compositions, especially the lyrics, weren't very good. Too bad. I wish he'd been a little more assertive and stuck with it. He couldn't fill Syd's rather large psychedelic sneakers, but I enjoy his songs nonetheless.
Regarding the David Bowie, Marc Bolan, & XTC comparisons, I think all three have gone on record as citing Syd Barrett as a major influence. Bowie even did a version (a not very good one) of See Emily Play on Pinups, and Bolan - well, just look at his hair, makeup, and clothes, or listen to just about any T.Rex lyric. XTC's Dukes of Stratosphear is practically an homage (a very good one) to early Pink Floyd, as well as several other bands from that era.
David Gilmour has said he is not opposed to officially releasing the oft-bootlegged Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett songs Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream, but also pointed out that the decision isn't really his to make, since he wasn't in the band when they were recorded. If you've heard these songs then you know they are interesting but not on the same level, quality-wise, as most of the released material. Think Barrett solo material, rather than some unearthed Emily-style gem.

Great recording, but this one is not original!.......2007-05-31
Excellente Album by Pink Floyd, one of the best they ever recorded! Just some few words, this is not an official cd, it has two in one, including early singles from the sixties, I bought it two years ago, but it is simply a Russian fake copy with average quality. Even the cover art is different than the one that appears here, it has the robot handshaking over a black background with the indication " Limited Edition" which I investigated never was done. They copied for the cd the art from the Shine on box,( which was exclusive for it) and put in the disc the music of two cds from that box, that's all. Don't believe what the seller says, he is maybe not aware about this being a copy, but very possibly he is!
classic syd and david stuff here man!(kids reveiw).......2007-04-08
this is a great great set. i may of just got early singles but i do have wish you were here also. anyways this is a good set if you want to start on pink floyd. the reason im saying this is one great set on is one you get 10 mostly rare syd barret songs 2 you also get wish you were here a classic pink floyd album. and plus for this price its a bargin almost a steal if you ask me because most pink floyd album would cost how much this does! buy it now before it runs out!!!
