The renewed Tokyp Qt. is better than ever.......2007-01-15
I hipe these new recordings of the three Rasumovsky Quartets find an enthusiastic audience. After the retirement of first violinist Peter Oundjian from an injury, the Tokyo Qt. went through a transition, but they have emerged sounding better than ever, particularly in these well recorded CDs. Always known for tonal beauty and pinpoint ensemble, the Tokyp has qcquired more maturity and depth while retaining a romantic stance that's a little old-fashioned. Their expressivity stands in marked contrast to the steel polish of the Emersons and the too-fierce attack of the Takacs (now going thourhg a transition with a new violist).
I was going to write a comparative article on the Rasumovsky sets from seven different groups, but in the end I didn't have enough praise for the Guarneri, Takacs, Juilliard, or Emerson performances. For real depth and tonal beauty combined, I favor the Alban Berg over all comers. For Middle European solidity at a bargain price, the Kodaly Qt. on Naxis is quite good. For Russian musicianship at its finest, the Borodins are wonderful despite absurdly over-resonant recordings that make them sound biger than life. the new Tokyp set is right up there, however. For me, these are the best new Rasumovskys in decades.
Silken sound, polished playing.......2006-09-08
The Tokyo quartet, now restaffed since its original cycle of the Beethoven quartets, gives a silky, elegant performance of the Razoumovsky quartets on this 2-CD set. I really wallow in the sound, especially in the opening of Op. 59, no. 1, where the cello solo gratifyingly reaches into the deep dark colors of the cello and resonates. Bravo! No one can touch this except the Quartetto Italiano. Otherwise, there is a little more restraint, emotionally, than I like with these very romantic pieces. The Razoumovsky quartets are unrivalled for sheer beauty and richness of conception and sound. This recording is more memorable for its clean, elegant qualities than for any new realization of the pieces or distinctive emotional insight. Still, if you relish the sound of super audio CDs (and these are hybrid discs you can play on any CD player - I tried it), you will find these polished renditions are well worth the extremely reasonable price.

Excellent Late Mozart Quartets.......2006-09-02
This is the last set of quartets Mozart wrote. He intended to write six but didn't get past the third one. They are notable for their more prominent, not to say virtuosic, cello parts; he wrote them this way because they were for the Prussian king, Friedrich Wilhelm II, his patron, who was a fine cellist. It is particularly nice to hear this set because it features the Tokyo's relatively new cellist, Clive Greensmith, who was formerly principal cellist of the Royal Philharmonic, and he does a bang-up job of it here. The Tokyo is known for their elegance and probing musicianship. They've been together for more than thirty years but have two newish members: Greensmith and first violinist Martin Beaver. The so-important inner voices of the quartets are played by two founding members of the quartet, Kikuei Ikeda, violin, and Kazuhide Isomura, viola. The funny thing is that when I listened to this set and then listened to an older set by the original four members I couldn't hear much difference at all. One must presume that the older members of the quartet have initiated the newer ones in the musical ways of the group.
At any rate, these are terrific readings of the three last wonderful quartets and they are worthy of inclusion in one's library whether one's first recordings of K. 575, 589, and 590, or one's tenth such set.

Customer Reviews:
Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24
First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.
I love this CD........2004-02-23
Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?
Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.
For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20
Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.
The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10
Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).
One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19
There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

Unnerving restraint.......2005-02-07
This is perfection. The Tokyo quartet plays with very much sense of the architecture of the music. If you like your Beethoven played with restraint, refinement, sense of the interior drama of the music, this is it. The Tokyo quartet is never over-dramatizing, but let the music speak for itself.
Compared to the Takacs quartet, I think the Tokyos are generally more elegant and balanced on the middle quartets, their tempos generally not slower, and they never exaggerate. The Takacs is more exciting though.
If you plan to buy the opus 18 quartets, go for the Takacs quartet - more concentration and excitement.
For the late quartets, nothing compares to the religious readings of the Tokyo quartet.

Amazon.com essential recording
These quartets, Haydn's last great quartet collection, represent a peak of musical achievement that may have been equaled, but has never been surpassed. Haydn invented the string quartet way back in the 1750s, and by the time he came to write these works some 40 years later, his mastery was so natural and effortless that it's hardly noticeable. All you hear are the great tunes, dramatic surprises, fresh rhythms, and ever-new string textures. These immaculate performances by the Tokyo Quartet went a long way toward establishing it as one of the most exciting young string quartets to emerge in the past two decades, and they have been superbly recorded. A classic set, then, and essential listening. --David Hurwitz

A Wonderful Discovery.......2003-06-11
I had no idea that Haydn wrote anything this profound. Every movement has the most brilliant harmonies, sublime counterpoint, deeply moving and beautiful melodies. These quartets are full of surprises and often take unexpected directions..
The Tokyo String Quartet performs virtually perfectly in this recording. They are warmly expressive, disciplined, and beautifully balanced. The sound quality is superb. This has become one of my favorite albums in any genre.
Meticulous Renderings of Moving Chamber Music.......2003-05-01
As these come from late in Hadyn's compositional career, they are well known as monumental works for string quartets.
Played with passion and control by the Tokyo String Quartet, they exemplify the Classical Style of delicate four movement style and equality among the instruments.
Especially enjoy the third movement of the B-flat major work, with its flighty stop and go's, and harmonies of this menuet. Just delightful and full of glee and bouncy joy.
Sumptuous Music!.......2002-12-27
When I bought my first CD player a year ago I decided to build a classical CD collection. Although I've loved classical music all my life, I'm neither educated nor particularly knowledgeable on the subject. (I've always known what I liked even if I didn't know who wrote it or who performed it.) I loved Beethoven and many years ago purchased his symphonies and piano concerti on LPs, but I really didn't have a feeling for chamber music. I purchased this particular CD set because the price was right but more importantly because a review I'd read suggested this music might be worth hearing. I now own TWO sets of these quartets. The Tokyo rendition resides on the CD changer in my car and the Kodaly rendition frequently revisits the CD carousel in my home. I've listened to quite a bit of chamber music over the last year, most of it purchased from Amazon[.com] and would say without hesitation that I enjoy listening to string quartets more than anything else. I'm in awe of what Haydn wrote, and am especially fond of the Op. 76 quartets, which are the last quartets Haydn completed during his life. This CD set is very fine. The music never fails to move me. I readily give the Tokyo String Quartet performance five stars and would do the same for Kodaly Quartet from Hungary. If you haven't listened to their performances of Haydn quartets, you owe it to yourself to check out their Naxos discs. Haydn rocks!
Excellent performances of Excellent Music.......2001-12-24
I've owned this set for about six years and I never grow tired of hearing these performances. They convey, I think, the composer's intentions flawlessly and contain all of the liveliness, optimism and energy which was Haydn's trademark. The textures and balancing seem to me to be perfect and the Tokyo String Quartet's sound and finish is impeccable. I can't imagine these works being performed any better.
Most enjoyable. I highly recommend!
Wonderful.......2001-12-02
If you're not familiar with these pieces, don't waste another minute! The music ranges from playful to deeply emotional, the performances are terrific. Haydn is underappreciated, listening to these discs will tell you why. These quartets are the equal of anything Mozart ever wrote.

David Lindley Live.......2006-04-09
The disc sounds just like the concert tour I saw, and both are amazing
Keep Lookin...........2005-03-09
It can be a bit frustrating searching out Lindley's best stuff these days. His 80's El Rayo-X years are well represented and usually at a good deal, but for his wealth of recent "solo" material recorded first with Hani Naser and then with Wally Ingram you need to go to a show (best choice!), or surf over to his website, davidlindley.com, where the action really is. These duo (guitar and drum) formate recordings are surprisingly full sounding and wonderfully musical and entertaining. I'm glad amazon at least has a few later recordings listed as imports. They are all good. (I give this one 4 stars due to sound quality, but it is an official bootleg after all, some of it from the tapes taken from bootleggers caught I presume in the crowd.). More power to you Mr. Dave, long may you strum.....
Deep Well.......2004-08-24
I owe Dylan heaps, and not just for helping me mature during the late 1960s. According to Robbie Robertson, Dylan accelerated The Band to full maturity too. But more musicians than I dare to count have passed through his various incarnations. And, keen to look around corners, I trailed after Doug Sahm, Norman Blake, & David Lindley, to name a few from which I've profited. Which brings me multi-instrumentalist, Lindley. Briefly, much as I like the Ex-Rayo CDs, its the first Madagascan CD, this live set & another (unlisted here) called 'Twango Bango' which are worth seeking out. This last, obtained from Lindley at a Blues Fest near Brisbane, Aust. a few years back, roars to life on track 4 with,'Coot From Tennessee' and segues through a tender reading of,'Do You want my Job', van Zandt's,'I am a Patriot," & a stunning version of the Dylan/O'Keefe,'Well,Well,Well.' At 70 minutes plus, it's a concert's worth of praiseworthy interpretations of unjustly lesser known works by some stellar artists. The musianship is stunning. Lindley's reedy tenor plaintively pitched just above his stringed things, is the perfect foil to the lush variety of skin man, Wally Ingram's superlative drumming.
Catchy live album by two-man band.......2002-06-04
I was loaned this by a friend, after raving about the Kaiser-Lindley "World Out of Time" Madagascar series. This is a live album by guitarist David Lindley and percussionist Hani Naser. They are the only two musicians. The songs are largely from Lindley's back catalog, including some El Rayo-X cuts. The music has an old-timey blues feel, with several songs sounding like they could have been written a century ago. Lindley's voice is a cross between Levon Helm of the Band and "O Brother, Where Art Thou". He's playing acoustic, with a fair amount of slide. My favorite track is the office-party luau "Tiki Torches at Twilight". I'm not sure I want to know what "She Took Off My Romeos" is about--sounds awfully Bobbitt-y--but it's a very catchy song. And what a compliment, to tell a woman that Hitler would have loved her "More Than Eva Braun". There's also a Warren Zevon cover, "Play It All Night Long". This CD is well worth checking out, so "let's all get normal at the luau".
Live David Lindley!.......2001-11-30
I bought this CD at a performance. David Lindley is a national treasure, one who can pick up a stringed instrument and play. He is great on this album, with acoustic tunes from El Rayo-X and others. It is available on his web site along with several other live albums. All are worth a listen.
