Scott McCaughey's two bands here deliver a bargain package of a full-length CD each. Given their enjoyably shambling live shows, the Minus 5 are hardly the first outfit you'd expect to turn in an album as magnificently crafted as Let the War Against Music Begin. McCaughey and a cast including Peter Buck, Posies Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, and Robyn Hitchcock render perfectly wistful widescreen pop loaded with direct lyrics, loving vocal harmonies, vintage electronic-keyboard sounds, and a Spector-esque propulsion. A winner that recalls and betters McCaughey's beloved Beach Boys discs So Tough and Holland, its counterpart finds the Young Fresh Fellows returning to the studio for the first time in several years. Unsurprisingly more haphazard than the Minus 5 record, Because We Hate You nonetheless has its share of lyrical moments ("Worthless," "Summerland") mixed in with the gleeful dork-rock mini-epic "My Drum Set," an amped-up cover of Boyce & Hart's "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite," and the speaks-for-itself "Mamie Dunn, Employee of the Month." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Another Great CD from Scott McCaughey.......2006-11-29
Scott McCaughey's two bands have put together a double disc of fun, catchy pop/rock songs.
The Minus 5 Disc ("Let the War Against Music Begin") opens with "Great News Around You," which sounds as if it were taken straight out of the Beach Boy's classic "Pet Sounds." "Got You" is another catchy number with a darker meaning behind what initially seems to be bright lyrics. Other highlights include, "You Don't Mean It", "1000 Years Away" and "One Bar At a Time."
For their turn at bat, the Fellows put out an album's worth of tunes not all that far removed from the Minus 5 disc, but a little more amped up. Some favorites include the insanely catchy cover of Boyce & Hart's "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight," the equally infectious "For the Love of a Girl", the dorky but lovable "My Drumset" and "Good Times Rock N Roll." And if that isn't enough to make you buy the album, they throw in a song devoted to a Krispy Kreme waitress.
Both discs feature a number of songs that could appear comfortably on the other, but both also retain their own spirit and unique feel. What really holds them together is the fact that both feature the powerful song writing of Scott McCaughey. This guy has been making music for many years now, and he knows what he's doing. Some musicians churn out a bunch of great songs early in their career only to burn out and release second rate garbage in their middle to late career. Scott McCaughey isn't one of those musicians. He keeps trying new things, but rest assured anything the man touches turns to gold. If some long-time fans of the Fellows are disappointed by this offering, it is probably due to the fact that it is different than McCaughey's early work. And making different music is a bit of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it assures that your music won't become boring. But it can also be a bit of a slap in the face to people who've listened to your music for years and want something similar to what attracted them to the music in the first place.
Bearing that in mind, I would recommend this collection to Minus 5 fans over Young Fresh Fellows fans. If you've been listening to some of the other albums McCaughey has made in recent years (particularly 2006's self-titled Minus Five Release), you will enjoy this record because it has a similar 60's pop/rock vibe. If you are expecting the more lo-fi, less elaborately produced sound of the Fellows in the 80s, you may not like what you hear. Of course, most fans of either band has probably already heard this disc so I'm primarily speaking to people just discovering McCaughey and his two bands. And to you I can only say that McCaughey is one of the most under-appreciated musical geniuses of this age.
If you are considering purchasing this, just do it. You can get a used copy for as low as $2.00, and that's for two discs worth of material! Even if you only end up enjoying a few of the more immediate tunes, you can't really go too wrong for that kind of price. Give it a try. You won't regret it.
Lost greatness.......2004-11-18
I cannot believe that this is out of print when so many lousy albums are in print. It is an injustice to the world when two of the best albums I have heard in recent years, packaged together no less, are not available through amazon.com. Well, lucky me, a local indie record shop had this in their used department in mint condition. From the moment I stuck disc one (Minus 5 was what I went to first) in my car stereo I was hooked. This is some classic pop in line with the Beach Boys, the Ramones, and 80s "college rock." Tuneful to the extreme, lots of real soul, and the freedom to goof around that comes of low commercial expectations. The songs are smart, funny, uplifting and insightful. In an alternate reality it would be a big, big hit with everyone. It would be blasting from loudspeakers in the streets. But here we are in 2004 America where no one cares enough even to keep it in print. Evrybody has lost out without even knowing it.

An amazing Double CD.......2002-10-22
I concede that I bought this CD out of sheer curiosity. I never heard them -both bands- before. Now it stands between my most beloved CD's, and believe me, I do have a 'beloved' category for my most appreciated CD's. I lost the count on how many times I've heard it since yesterday. Both bands have that nice 60's sound that you think was forgotten even by yourself until you rediscover it by listening to this double CD. 'The Minus 5' are more 60's oriented, while the 'Young Fresh Fellows' combine that 60's psychodelic sound with some edgy punk -some songs sounds almost hardcore, like 'She's a Book'. So, if you happen to be looking for something really surprising, and it happens that you came to this page, welcome. Don't hesitate. Give this CD a chance and don't forget to mark these my words: It will be really worth it. So check this out. Enjoy.
A hidden gem.......2001-07-09
I picked up this CD after hearing a brief review of it on NPR. I wasn't expecting much, but I was completely blown away. The two CD concept is quite clever, and each album has some really great tunes. Most of the lyrics are too smart for mainstream radio these days, but the combination of wit and excellent melody lines make this set a steal.
Scott McCaughey's double disc mid-life crisis?.......2001-03-07
Scott McCaughey fans are like Jonathan Richman fans: they think their fave's mediocre stuff is more enjoyable than 95% of the music out there. There's a lot to like on both discs of this release, but it pales in comparison to Young Fresh Fellows '80s output. Still, "Ghost Tarts of Stockholm" is better than anything released in last year, and the Fellows do their best Sex Pistols imitation on "Your Truth (Our Lies)" or something like that. Truth be told, this is a must for old Fellows fans but really only a 2+1/2 star album at most. Just make sure you get all the old YFF first: Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest, Topsy Turvy, The Men Who Loved Music and This One's For The Ladies are among the greatest rock and roll records ever made. Better yet, catch these guys on tour (check the Mammoth records site - mammoth.com ? - for details) - I saw them on a triple bill (Young Fresh Fellows/Minus 5/Fastbacks, Mike Mills joined in so most of REM was there, too!) three nights ago and even though most of these musicians are now 40-somethings, they still rock harder and better than ANY band on the planet. "In Dennis's room with the black and white, we know it's gonna' be another long night, they're taking the earthlings for fools, we say: 'Godzilla's been attacked by the killer shrews', and someday, oh someday, it's all to be so easy for me."

I wish somebody would tell me where Groovytown is, 'cause I wanna go there.......2006-10-05
These two albums are part of the soundtrack of my high school years. I was so happy to find them on cd! I went to see them every time they played Portland (at underage venues, at least) and they were a great live band, too. Far ahead of their time, I think. FSPN with the interspersing of vintage tourism filmstrip, and both with entertaining liner notes (like another reviewer said, too bad they aren't included with the cds.)
Even if these albums didn't hold wonderful nostalgic memories for me, I would still love them. There are clever lyrics, great music, and great musicians here. This is so different from other music from the same time period, and it doesn't sound dated at all.
You must buy this.
Really.
Little Kids Bring Zucchinis and Stay All Day.......2003-10-22
Is the line on the spine of the original album. That was enough for me to buy it then.
Pure pop for now people! Too bad for you that it doesn't contain the lyric sheet (signed by the band) that was in the original vinyl pressing of Fab Sounds...
Scott transforms great titles into great songs, and on Topsy Turvy proves that he and the band can master just about every genre known to popular music. A modern day Lennon/McCartney in one shaggy-haired package. Drummer Tad is, well, the coolest machine-gun drummer/golfer and lounge sophisticate around (trek, trek). Get it.
Soundtrack for my high school years.......2003-09-27
I'm a northwest native who discovered these guys at a mid-80's Bumbershoot and have been hooked ever since. I wore out the first copy of I had of Topsy Turvy, and then its replacement. My third copy was stolen.
Finally, years later I found the CD used, in Miami, of all places, god bless Blue Note records in N. Miami, and my life was again complete.
By the way, all the spoken word stuff on "Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest" comes from a strange little record published as a tourist attraction by Pacific Northwest Bell, and which I picked up at a local Goodwill recently for $.30. It sounds even weirder without music following it.
Anyway, this is a collection of songs that will get under your skin and stay there. If there's any way to wear out a CD I have no doubt that I will find it with this CD.
4 and 1/2 Stars ( Because nobody gets a 5 ).......2001-11-06
When I first purchased this it was on White Vinyl with strange purple smears, the summer of "85" I think, and Duran Duran was king and drum machines and synth washes were the essential elements of radio music...Yeesh; And the College radio scene consisted of U2 and REM, a little to serious for my taste.
Topsy Turvy was perfect for general beer drinking and college socializing and acoustic sing along stuff too, we all could play along and knew every sarcastic hysterical word Scott sang.
There was real Pop/Rock music being played in the 80's it was just harder to find than we were used to. These guys (The Young Fresh Fellows) were the Beatles to us; instead of "Involvement, Revolution and Dreaming of changing the world" The Fellows were disenfranchised, sarcastic, hysterically funny and completely devoid of egocentrism. If you want a glimpse into a revolution that never happened (because you have to become a part of the "system" to beat the "system")... We did not rage against the machine we giggled at it from our window seat.
This CD is a worthy investment in music history
The first two albums by a fairly obscure but excellent band.......2001-05-26
The Young Fresh Fellows are not especially well-known (except possibly through a lyric in a They Might Be Giants song), and that is somewhat of a shame, since their music is really a lot of fun. Both of their first two albums can be found on this disc, and, while their later albums are also great, Topsy Turvy is probably still my favorite (and apparently also the favorite of band leader Scott McCaughey). Styles range from hard-rocking ("How Much About Last Night Do You Remember?" and "You've Got Your Head On Backwards," for instance) to slower and rather psychadelic (the Sharing Patrol and Topsy Turvy Themes) to country-ish ("Good Things Go" and "Searchin' USA," despite the latter's obvious Beach Boys references). The band's sense of humor is shown in such songs as "Hang Out Right" and "The New John Agar," as well as in the spoken-word introductions to the tracks on The Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest, most of which have only tenuous, if any, connections with the songs they introduce. The whole package makes for some enjoyable listening, and a great way for those unfamilar with the band (which is probably most people) to find out about their work.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Every last note..........2006-06-14
A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

oh man.......2004-09-28
The Young Fresh Fellows are the best thing that ever happened to me.
The Lost Art ( a record with good songs on it ).......2001-12-21
This album contains a few of the gems I like to use when I try to lure poeple into becoming 'Fellows" fans. Tunes such as Taco Wagon, Lost track of all Time and Carrot Head....classics
Admittedly I was crushed when Chuck (Guitarist) left the band, but Kurt (Replacement Guitarist) of the Seattle fame Fastbacks does solid and not entirely disruptive work on this record. After a few listens it's just impossible to not love this album as a whole picture from the Fellows last phase. At the time this record came out most of the hard core fans knew the fellows were nearing the end of there long and productive run and this record serves as a solid knee to the balls and says, "We have a few unbelievably cool records left, ok so relax"
The last great Young Fresh Fellows album.......1999-02-24
This, YFF's 5th studio recording, represents the last true breath of genius from the world's greatest unknown rock band. Kurt Bloch kept the Fastbacks going after this, Scott McCaughey would go on to REM and Minus 5, and the group as a whole would keep making records (some of which, like Electric Bird Digest, had some great moments on them, eg. "Hillbilly Drummer Girl"), but this was the last completely brilliant, no-filler CD. Check this out and you'll be humming and singing these songs forever!

Classic Indie Classic.......2004-10-18
Fun, fun, fun. Melding bar band punch with eclectic pop/rock influences, "The Men Who Loved Music" gives just enough smooth with the ragged. Here The Fellows have yet to leave the goofiness for grandeur. Note that the punk elements here never eclipse the pop elements. It's just another flavor in the mix. It's not perfect since the pure sweet rush gets sort of unfocused but,the number of "hits" overall is hard to deny. Recommended for Sloan fans and those miss the true variety you could find in early indie. This is working class intellgencia rock before irony became a selling point. Just about ideal.
Maybe the perfect American pop record.......2002-01-02
The Fellows aren't afraid of swiping inspiration from all over the musical landscape. Successfully looting the last 50+ years of pop music, they managed to harness everything that was ever cool, exciting, and fun in a way few (if any) bands have. It all gets unleashed on this disc: rock-a-billy, punk, pop, country all get the Fellows' special treatment. Listen to this album once; you'll be singing along and grinning as much as the band themselves by the end of your first listen.
Did I mention, nobody gets a 5 star ( Ooop's ).......2001-11-06
Ok Ok, It's all true....
The apex (if you will) the height of Pop music is reached right here. Simply slide your mouse over and select the "add to my cart" button.
Your musical road map will change forever, you will run to the store and buy a beat-up old guitar and sit for weeks playing this over and over, giddy with laughter as you lose your job but uncover the secrets of E A and C, oh yeah and G too (for the bridge)
In other words it's simple, it's beautiful, it's funny it's timeless. No tricks no fancy production. A++ material
To my entire generation these guys should have been the "Beatles" to my circle of 20 or so friends the "Young Fresh Fellows" were our Beatles...it's that important (In "86" I was 21)
Clever, catchy, and funny...why aren't they more popular?.......2001-05-26
Continuing in the same vein as the Young Fresh Fellows' first two albums, this record shows a band obsessed not only with music, but with television (check out "TV Dream," the mention of Mr. Ed in the "Happy Death Theme," or the hidden track) and other essential aspects of American culture, all explored with an obvious sense of humor. The biggest hit here is a song making fun of Amy Grant, but there are also lyrics about Hank Wiliams, Karen Carpenter, Elvis, Ringo Starr, and others, not to mention plenty of songs that do not really fit the concept, including the hilarious "When The Girls Get Here" and the noisy and amusing "I Don't Let The Little Things Get Me Down." This is one of the best albums by a great but little-known band. If you can find a copy..., be sure to check it out.
THE GIRL WHO LOVED YFF MUSIC.......1999-04-28
Is it possible for anything to make Mondays not suck ?? Well it is if you buy this Young Fresh Fellows cd. I've always liked them, but only owned their newer cds. Now that I have their first couple of releases, I feel like I am a better person. "TV Dream" is hilarious and any band that has their own themes is ok with me. Also, living in Nashville, I appreciate anyone poking fun at Amy Grant.

Customer Reviews:
THE SORT OF MUSIC THAT BOSTRIDGE'S VOICE WAS MADE FOR.......2002-10-09
Ian Bostridge has one of the most beautiful voices on record, and he has consistently shown courage and wisdom in selecting material that will extend and develop his gifts. Not all of this material has been a perfect match for his young and soaring tenor voice, notably some of Schubert's more dramatic "lieder". In contrast, nothing could be more perfectly suited to his voice than this generous and beautiful collection of traditional English poetic settings by Britten, Finzi, Grainger, Warlock and others.
Bostridge brings more than just a beautiful tone and a subtle musical phrasing to these songs. The challenge any intepreter of English songs has to face is that, in contrast with the pure syllables of most continental languages, the complex vowels of "Southern British English" are formidably difficult to render attractively in song. It's not just a question of singing them prettily. Think how accurately the pronunciation of a word like "house" or "bath" can betray someone's geographical and social background; our vowels are a caste-mark as well as a means of communication. But somehow Bostridge himself, in his fruitful partnership with Julius Drake, manages to transcend our socio-linguistic divisions and deliver these songs in a way that places no barrier between the listener and the music.
The material is wonderful in its own right - a collection of lilting pastoral airs and occasional boisterous ditties. They are at one and the same time ancient and modern, embracing at once the mutual cross-fertilisation between classical and "pop" sensibilities that has always underpinned the best of English music. Even the most trivial of these songs (e.g. "Jillian of Berry") are memorable, and some of them (notably Sir Charles Stanford's chilling musical setting of the Keats' poem, "La Belle Dame Sans Merci") would not have been beneath Schubert himself.
It has been fashionable over the generations to belittle British classic music. "The land without song" England was dubbed, as the sleeve notes poignantly remind us. This CD is a healthy reminder that the global success of English popular music in the latter four decades of the 20th century did not appear out of nowhere; it was built on a solid foundation of past accomplishment that it was for too long fashionable to dismiss. Highly recommended.
Artistry beyond measure.......2002-09-20
This disk is a wonderful treasure. "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing" is an exquisite song that you should not go another day without hearing. I am speaking literally.
Mr. Bostridge's interpretation of Browne's song is amazingly compelling. His ability to express goes beyond that of most other singers - even some great ones. He notes the problems in singing in English (the "extra" vowels, the English vs. German approach to word painting, etc.) and I have to say he triumphs on this disk.
As he also notes, this is NOT a recording of a recital program nor are the songs "English" in nationality - the songs are just set to texts in the English language. I had not heard of some of these composers, but I am enthusiastic in saying that every song on this disk has something very nice to recommend it - at least at the voice and hands of Ian Bostridge and Julian Drake.
I must say a few words about Mr. Drake's playing. Overall he is simply incredible. He has a beauty of tone and a singing style that is not in anyway mere accompaniment. It really isn't even a partnership. It is a unity of artistry that creates this single entity, a song. There aren't many that can pull this off and Mr. Drake should be treasured for this ability. Just amazing artistry.
Please get every disk that Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake have done together. You will thank me for recommending this if you didn't know this already. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on this disk or any comments you have about Bostridge and Drake.
Perfectly Enjoyable.......2002-02-09
I already liked Ian Bostridge, but I thought "English songs" would be rather light and without substance. But I have fallen in love with this CD and never tire of it! I was already an admirer of Vaughan Williams, Britten, Finzi, Warlock and Delius, and I'm glad for this introduction to other composers as well. Also, much beautiful poetry is chosen, from Shakespeare, Yeats, Rossetti, Keats, and others, and each is treated with careful consideration by the composer, *partnering* music with poetry rather than simply enhancing or overshadowing the lyric. Bostridge seems to have the perfect voice for this music, light and charming when appropriate, heart-breaking at other times, always an engaging storyteller. He obviously understands intimately each word and note that he sings. The listener can hear his facial expressions and body language! The English Songbook is a beautiful collection of excellent craftsmanship, and one of the best CDs I have.
Do Not Be Deceived By His Look Of Innocence.......2001-10-14
Just look at Ian on the cover photo of this CD. He's sitting there looking coy, playing with his finger, hair a little mussed, with a very cute boyish smile, as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong mommy, honest." Well he has done it this time.
This CD was my first exposure to Ian Bostridge. I bought it because I was very surprised to know that one of my favorite poems, the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats, was set to music. I spent 17 bucks for one song, and ended up cashing in on 23 others.
To Gratiana Dancing and Singing quickly became a favorite, as did Bold William Taylor. This last one was my first realization of Ian's gift of storytelling. Somehow he is able to make his voice sound like a woman, namely Sally Gray, and the narrator, and the macho Captain, all in the same song. The multiple personalities come out to play similarly in The Death of Queen Jane. I am lulled into quiet reflection and relaxation when Ian sings the Cradle Song.
Check out his CDs of Schubert Lieder, also accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian may be even more at home in German than he is in his native English! Julius is at home with Schubert, especially the water songs, and we are at home listening to this wonderfully weird, warm voice paired with masterful piano playing.
One of the best English-Song CD's available.......2001-09-12
Unlike the reviewer "A music fan from California, USA" I realize that this is not a recital program of music (as even noted in the liner). This is though, an unequaled collection of some of the most beautiful English Songs ever. Ian is on top of his game and J Drake plays, well, I don't have the words. He never fails to impress with his skills. Each key under each finger sings! Back to Ian. As a professional tenor, I am in awe of his voice. It is tender, moving, all the things you want in a good recitalist, and (unlike any of the opera tenors I can think of) it is note perfect. Yes, there are times when his voice seems a little light for the song he may be performing, but it is passionate and caries the pathos of each note/word he sings. BUY THIS CD - you will love it for ever!

Album Description
The Poems are Robert Hodgens (The Bluebells), Adrian Barry (The High Fidelity), Bobby Paterson (Love And Money) and vocalists Kerry Polwart and Amy Ogletree (daughter of the Simple Minds' drummer). Take the cream of the U.K. indie pop vanguard, put them in a Glasgow recording studio with some first time vocalists, and achieve the sublime. Full of chiming acoustic guitars, sweeping vocals, and grand arrangements, The Poems wear their gentle melodicism proudly on their world-worn sleeves. Guests include members of Belle And Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, and The Proclaimers.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice melodic rock.......2007-06-03
If you're a fan of mellow Anglophilic melody rock like Belle and Sebastian, Coldplay, Dido, Badly Drawn Boy, Dandy Warhols, Travis, etc., then this is a must-hear. The songs are consistently pretty and relaxing... I have Young America and the Glasgow Calling EP, and there's not a single song I skip over on either CD, which is very very rare for me. There's nothing on here that's bound to be an international smash hit or anything... they're not the new Coldplay. I'd relate them more to Belle & Sebastian (the songs with Sarah Martin on vocals) in that the songs are more subtle than striking. Some very memorable melodies that'll get stuck in your head. If you want some good chilled-out music on your stereo that's nice to listen to and that you haven't already heard a million times, that's worth making a few memories to, I'd highly recommend it.
A GEM.......2006-11-20
This CD was a gift for which I had no expectations. How wonderful then to discover what a gem it is! Interesting songs and great melodies with appealing arrangements and singing. This is a CD I can put on regardless of my mood and enjoy. I even heard my 10 year old son singing along with one of the songs today which is a first!

One of their best.......2007-03-21
This is certainly a different sounding album compared to their others, and as much as I love their others, I think this is their best album. The production is great. The songwriting is great. The playing is great. The whole album doesn't sound like the same song played over and over, like a lot of "alternative" albums coming out around that time. Sure, it's not as garage-y or poppy or country-fied as their other releases, but it's still a great album from a great band.
Different But Still Great.......2006-08-29
I don't agree that this was YFF's stab at grunge. The guitar sound from Kurt Bloch is,logically, the Fastback's sound. And, I think I heard when it was released, the album also reflects Scott M.'s struggle with personal problems - thus an overall harder sound.
Very different from other YFF albums, but still brillant.
The Fellows turn to a noisier, less catchy sound.......2001-05-27
This is the noisiest, "grungiest" album by the Fellows, as can be evidenced by playing the disc and hearing the loud, discordant first track, "The Telephone Tree." Indeed, many of the songs have this sort of feel to them. That's not to say that the normally eclectic Fellows have limited themselves to one style for this album, however. "Sittin' On A Pitchfork," the second and best track, is as "poppy" as much of the band's early work (with hints of a few other styles working their way in). "The Teen Thing," one of the few Fellows songs written by drummer Tad Hutchinson, is an amusing and light-hearted (and very short) send-up of sixties-type songs, with nonsensical lyrics that just sound appropriate together. While this record is not as immediately catchy as most of the group's work, there is still plenty to like. I would agree with the reviewers who said that this is not the best introduction to the Fellows, but it is still an excellent record.
this WAS my intro to YFF!.......2001-03-23
Funny that people say this makes a bad intro to YFF, because it was this album that got me hooked on them. I thought it was totally brilliant, obviously, since I went out and bought many more YFF discs after this one. Besides, any record that gives thanks to (now-defunct) Jan's Friendly Bennett's here in Madison where it was recorded can't be all that bad.
For addicts only.......1999-02-24
Mel from HI really hit the nail on the head with his review below. This, their 6th studio album, is a bad introduction to YFF. Hardcore fans who have the rest of their earlier work will certainly want to pick it up - there's lots to like here; I'd like to single out "Hillbilly Drummer Girl" as a favorite - but there's no reason to get this before you've fully explored their first 5 records. I almost never listen to this.....

The Young Fresh Fellows may not have accrued a lot of fans over the course of their two-decades-plus existence, but the select few who've been won over by the downright lovable Seattle combo are true devotees. Judging by the participants in this 21-song tribute to on-again, off-again outfit, more than a few of their fans are musicians who appreciate the tunefulness, and genial spirit and humor of the heart, hail Fellows. Reaching all the way back to the YFF's 1984 debut for Frontier Records, The Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest, executive producers Pete Hilgendorf and Ben Heege draw from the band's proto-alt contemporaries (Robyn Hitchcock, the Silos, Charlie Chesterman) and newer faces (Visqueen, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House, Mendoza Line). Four of the five Fellows turn up here and there, paying themselves tribute, it seems. Ah, well, they've earned it. This One's for the Fellows is a delight on its own terms, but one hopes it channels a few new Fellows travelers toward the band's still-active and ever-entertaining catalog. --Steven Stolder

killer salute to an influential band!.......2004-04-22
The Young Fresh Fellows make music other musicians (like the Replacements and R.E.M.) love, and have been building a devoted fan base for 20 years. This CD is a long overdue tribute to their catchy, funny and quirky style. Every time I listen to this record, I'm amazed at how good the original songwriting was, to translate so well to bands as diverse as the Presidents of the USA, Robyn Hitchcock, Visqueen, and the Makers. Also, all the bands turn in killer cover versions - all in all, a very cool and bouncy rock record.
