5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this 10 stars!.......2007-02-08

This album is truly one of the best jazz albums EVER. Some may argue that point, but they will lose. The musicianship is absolutley stunning, the songs are beautiful, and it's all live. This is a MUST HAVE for any true jazz fan!

5 out of 5 stars Mike Mainieri deserves wider recognition!.......2006-05-23

I arrived at this CD after hearing and adoring their later work. "Smokin' in the Pit" is a great CD, but "Modern Times" offers more exciting compositions - by that I mean drum lines that loop in a different meter, as well as some creative modern melodies.
Smokin' in the Pit differs, largely in my opinon, with the change in drummers. Steve Gadd on "Pit", and Peter Erskine on "Modern Times." Gadd plays well. His style is all his own. And I have to say he is one of my favorite drummers. But, Peter Erskine is more of a chameleon, choosing a styles that differ more for each song. The difference is most noticable on "Sara's Touch", a song of exquisite beauty composed by Mike Mainieri, the vibes player. I have the recording "Wanderlust" by Mike Mainieri with Peter Erskine on drums and Marcus Miller on bass (as I recall.) I consider this a much more sensitive version of the song.
Back to "Smokin' in the Pit" - It is nonetheless an exciting session by top notch musicians. Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez and Don Grolnik round out the list. On this session a lot of jamming goes on. They can be long, but I hasten so say not too long. This is certainly not a flaw, just different. I just expected more of the ground breaking style of their later recordings.

5 out of 5 stars The Brecker - Gadd Show.......2005-01-11

I consider this album as essentially an extended Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd duet. If you like explosive tenor sax solos and pure power jazz / funk drumming, these discs will be heaven. Gomez / Grolnick / Manieri provide fantastic backup; the group is obviously well-rehearsed and "smokin'" just as the title says.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZ HEAVEN.......2002-05-17

Hey guys, if you love jazz and instrumental music in general you can't miss this one!!! THIS ONE would be in any jazz enthusiast 5 desert island records, maybe also in a short list of the best 3..... surely in mine anyway! Unbelievable tracks list, solos, interplay between the musicians, fire, intensity, groove, I can't say much more than this. EDDIE GOMEZ man, is a hell of a double bass player probably the best ever!!!! Brecker, Mainieri, Gadd, GROLNICK!!!! Fantastic breathtaking musicians! Don't go for the later Steps Ahead albums, they're absolutly NOT comparable to this concert!! ..., but really the only thing bad here is the Kazumi guitar solo, awful, but it's quite short.... a couple of minutes surrounded by 2 hours of pure gold. This cd contains also one of best track ever in my opinion.... YOUNG & FINE, this version of the Zawinul gem will shake your walls!!!! Hear the unearthly EDDIE GOMEZ solo it is simply a work of art in itself, perfect for technical chops, expression, fire, things said, a diamond of a solo!!! But in that track all the players did their best in my opinion. I have listened (and continue to listen) that track THOUSANDS of times, and each time I found a new perspective, new emotions, new colours....... not a cd, a dream come true!! BUY IT NOW DON'T WASTE A SINGLE MINUTE!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is Jazz.......2002-02-23

"Smokin' in the Pit" is what every jazz recording should be. This was the first of the Steps/Steps Ahead releases and the best one. This is a jazz recording that is all acoustic (unlike the rest that were fusion). The band is made up of all-star calibre players. Mike Manieri is the best vibraphonist that I have ever heard(Sorry Mr.Burton). Eddie Gomez is solid throughout the whole disc and fills out the low end. His playing isn't virtuostic in nature but he does what every bassist should do; Be the link between rhythm and melody and he does this extremely well. Don Grolnik is an accomplished pianist and he doesn't dissapoint here. Steve Gadd is one of the greatest drummers to have ever stepped behind a kit and the performance on this disc is his best. This rhythm section makes every tune a lesson in jamming together and creating a groove without getting boring/repetetive. With the grooves that are created by Gomez/Gadd anybody would sound like a Juliard graduate and these soloists sound unearthly. All of these musicians are amazing but the headliner of this set is the sax playing of one Michael Brecker. He is quite possibly the greatest saxophonist ever and ,at the least, he is the heir to the Parker/Coltrane throne. This man has to be heard to be believed. As for the songs themselves, all are great at the least. The unreal ones are; both versions of "Not Ethiopia" of which one version has Kazumi Watanabe playing a fine guitar solo. "Recordame" which is a showcase for Brecker and Gadd. Gadd delivers an incredible polyphonic solo at the end of this piece. The tune "Sarah's Touch" is my personal favorite. It contains Mr. Brecker at his best ,blending speed and phrasing to unveil to the listener one of the most amazing things that they will ever hear. This disc is unbelievable. Anyone that is currently listening to fusion or any other type of instrumental music will find this to be a perfect introduction to jazz. BUY THIS NOW!!!!

Album Description

Vibe features a new generation of young players whose performances, though grounded in the jazz tradition, bring their individual voices to the project. Vibe is about energy, reflection, and ...chemistry!

The vision on Vibe was to capture the feeling, spirit and "vibe" embodied in the historic recording of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More magic from Manieri.......2005-10-28

Although perhaps just barely falling short of the greatness of the Brecker/Grolnick lineup, this edition of Steps Ahead has its own pleasures, and is a lot friendlier and more listenable, at least to these ears. The players here (Mike Cain, piano; Rachael Z, piano, synths; Adam Holzman, keys and drum programming; Donny McCaslin, tenor and soprano sax; Victor Bailey, electric bass; James Genus, double bass; Reggie Washington, double bass; and Clarence Penn, drums) are all top drawer, and most have gone on to produce a fine body of work as leaders, notably Donny McCaslin and Rachael Z.

McCaslin, especially, has become one of my favorite players, and here he finds himself in a setting that admirably showcases his estimable post-Coltrane approach and general soulfulness. One of the things I really like about this disc is that although it was recorded in the mid-nineties, it still sounds fresh a decade later. Another thing I love is the way the group establishes and sustains a very attractive soul-jazz vibe with enough rigor to prevent it from slipping into jazz-lite.

Nothing revolutionary happening here; just very fine and finely wrought top caliber jazz. Entirely worth acquiring.

3 out of 5 stars Uninteresting.......2004-02-26

This is a fine recording, but will probably disappoint fans of the Michael Brecker/Mike Stern/Don Grolnick era. It's good to see Mike Manieri is continuing the Steps Ahead tradition, but the recent recordings have lacked the creativity and the, well, "stepping ahead" elements of the earlier years.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2002-04-29

Michael Mainieri has done it again! In this latest confluence called Steps Ahead Mike has crafted a work of art that melds beautiful composition with virtuosic talent; great grooves and magical group chemistry. It's not like any of the other Steps offerings (all brilliant, in my book) - it's comtemporary/modern in it's grooves yet maintains a hard-bop straight ahead feel to it. The whole thing gels together in a way not heard since the phenominal US debut release. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good CD- But not their best work.......2000-11-07

I really like this CD, it has some great tunes, but after having my socks blown off by both "Ying-yang" and "NYC" (some of the best CD's I own) I was a little let down.

5 out of 5 stars Best of all Steps Ahead recordings.......2006-03-07

As a long time fan of Steps Ahead, this is the best compilation of music and artists that defines the group.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BAND!.......2005-10-17

I had the good fortune of seeing this band at the Bottom Line club in New York City twice, once with Peter Erskine on drums and another time with Steve Smith on drums and they were nothing short of excellent. The show with Erskine stands out for me although the show with Smith was by no means shabby!

They performed a few tracks from this CD and I was just in awe of the incredible sound put out by the band and the fantastic compositions, allowing each musician to stretch out. Master musicians at work. I originally had this on vinyl but recently got the CD version and it has stood the test of time for me.
Although she is not on this CD, this is the band that introduced me to the great Eliane Elias.

5 out of 5 stars A classic. What else can be said?.......2003-07-29

It's astonishing that this album is as old as it is, because it still sounds so fresh. Steps was arguably at their peak here. This album was what made me want to get serious about jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Unfortunately Deserted.......2000-12-22

Somebody gave me a cassette recording several years ago of Modern Times by a group I had never heard of called Steps Ahead. I had no liner notes and so could only guess at who was playing. Being a musician involved in playing jazz at the time and having listened to all the major "candy jazz" or "fusion" type bands, I found "Modern Times" to be completely unique in form and approach. What I heard was a unique blend of jazz chordal harmony mixed with complex contemporary rhythms that had a discipline all its own. It was far removed from the garden- variety compositions that featured self-indulgent prolonged solos and lazy "head arrangement"-type playing that had surfaced in all the other groups. Gone were the "hip" over-simplified melodies with their predictable kicks and safe melodies. Suddenly, I thought there was hope. Alas, all other Steps Ahead CD's I have sampled, although better than most, have deserted their own precedent for unique, truly listenable and groundbreaking music. "Modern Times" still is a standout, and holds up well even in the new millenium.

5 out of 5 stars exciting approach with ovelaying rythyms and melodies.......1999-11-06

upon listening to the music, one gets caught in the energy exchange between the artists. the artist create musical places that we all should travel to.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2006-08-30

Mike Brecker, Elaine Elias, Peter Erskine, Eddie Gomez, and Mike Manieri all star on this first "Steps Ahead" album. They were forced to change their name from Steps to avoid a lawsuit from a similarly named company. Anyway, the music is absolutely fantastic, all players really stretch and obviously enjoy themselves. Along with Smokin' in the Pit, this would be my top pick for this group, counting only the Brecker including releases. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars simply great. .......2004-10-12

What a difference a drummer makes. I love Steps with Steve Gadd, but the change to Peter Erskine on this record is like going from a luxury car to a sportster. The crisp style of Erskine fits in really nice with the music.

I don't want to repeat what everyone else has already said, so I'll just agree that all the players are in top form on this one.

I certainly encourage listeners to hear the Steve Gadd incarnation of this group as well, or even better check out Three Quartets by Chick Corea.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB JAZZ.......2004-09-08

cream of the crop musicians playing superb jazz. The track 'Islands' is one of the most beautiful and well crafted tunes I have ever heard. The ensemble playing on that track is excellent and tasteful, as are the solos. Peter Erskine's drumming is flawless. This CD will make a great additon to any music collection. No showboating here, just excellent musicians playing some great jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Easily in the top 10 of the last millenium.......2001-06-13

The first US release by this super group. Mike Mainieri - vibes, Michael Brecker - tenor sax, Eddie Gomez - bass, Peter Erskine - drums, Elaine Elias - piano. This is great acoustic jazz that has all the raw energy and power of the best electric jazz. Great compositions are topped by the late (and VERY MUCH missed) keyboard giant Don Grolnick's "Pools". Although I recommend all the Steps albums, I think this particular production is extraordinary in that it doesn't rely on heavy multi-tracking or layers of electronica (which the latter productions use brilliantly by the way). It's a very well recorded session of a hot jazz band playing and improvising on wonderful arrangements of great tunes.

5 out of 5 stars It had really shown us a type of newest jazz world.......2001-06-04

Especially I admired the last tune,Trio (An Improvisation). The music is really something-it is one of the most ideal Trio music,I think. At the beginning of Eliane Elias`s part is very exciting, it makes me feel to see as if the world of the tune is going to develop just in front of me! Good music should be very, very visually attractive, and this is surely makes you feel so.

The line between a genious solo-artist and a ego-centric maniac is very thin. It is clearly subjective. For me it entirely depends on whether I like the artist (Michael Brecker) or not (Mainieri). This album passes the test, also because of great drumming, but it is not a 5 like other Brecker CDs

5 out of 5 stars if you don't have this disc, GET IT!!!!!!.......2001-05-15

This is absolutely my favorite disc in my entire collection. I borrowed it from a friend first, kept it for a year, and finally found a copy of it for myself. Every time I listen to it, I hear something I haven't heard before. Make sure you listen to "In a Sentimental Mood" a bunch of times! It made me cry the first few, Mike Brecker is such a musical god.

If you are a jazz player, don't miss this!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars 1985 at the "Bottom Line".......1999-11-01

The fact that this cd was produced in 1994 as the result of "Steps Ahead" fans wanting to hear recordings from their concert tour in 1985, expresses just how special the performances of this particular group really were. I was fortunate to have caught the group at the "Bottom Line" in NYC. Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Daryl Jones, Mike Stern and Steve Smith were really cookin'!

5 out of 5 stars For those of you who know and love this band.................1999-09-14

My favorite album by these guys was Magnetic, a highly rocking album , by jazz standards. The only thing missing on the studio album was guitar, so to speak. Not a problem, add Mike Stern. This disc, answers THAT musical question in SPADES. This is one moving album, both tastefully and tempo-wise. You can't get "Magnetic" anymore, so get this. Email me if you hate it, I'll buy it from you. Guaranteed. Greg Watkins gwat@flash.net

I was sceptical of Bob Berg replacing Brecker, but after hearing this I am a Berg fan. He works very well with the group, and we have to accept that Brecker could not be everywhere......writing this it pains me that both these great modern tenor masters have left us much too soon. If you want more Steps, more Berg, or just some really great modern jazz tunes (excellent writing here!!), I suggest this.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-02-18

There appears to be an overwhelming "old camp" fan base of Steps, regarding other reviewer's opinions. While having enjoyed several of the older recordings and different lineups of players, this recording (NYC)was my first introduction to the group, and understandably my favorite. I cannot understate the deep, soulful emotion being poured out on several of these tracks. I must address the reference to Michael Brecker's absense as noted by another reviewer. Yes, he is to be revered, and I respect him. However, In spirit of a true step forward, this album's sax player, Bendik, is unbelievable. I cannot sit back and watch him be discredited for not being the previous player. Get real! I cannot recall a player who can conjure such emotion while coaxing the strange, twisted sounds he produces. Some of you may understand that a piece of music can touch you so deeply as to bring tears to your eyes. This album truely touches my soul. Not to mention, I am a bassist / Chapman Stick player, inspired by the legendary Tony Levin, who is not normally seen in this genre. His playing naturally is a departure from the standard/bop sound in some ways, but he also does perform some selections on upright, and does them a great justice. If you appreciate not just what was done on previous recordings, but welcome an embracing of new techniques / technology, this album is a perfect, natural transition to the future. Mike Manieri did a fine job of tipping his hat to his original sound and fan base, while enthusiastically embracing new directions. In the true spirit of Steps Ahead, you must open your mind and give this a try. If you simply enjoy the fulfilment of honest, inventive, fresh, inspired music, you need this recording. I own over 500 CD's. If someone said I get to keep just one, this may very well be it. Honestly.

5 out of 5 stars Steps miles ahead with NYC.......2001-02-12

An astounding collection of compositions from one of the modern greats of contemporary jazz fusion, Steps Ahead did it again with this splendid piece of work that seems to capture the mood of the 80's in a CD.

Steps Ahead never seem to be capable of making a bad recording.

3 out of 5 stars Lost dimension without Brecker.......2001-01-14

Had high hopes for this CD, but was disappointed. Steps Ahead took a big step down from the pinnacle of inventive, cutting edge jazz when Michael Brecker left. The band was such a creative mix. Now it's missing a main ingredient: Imagine trying to make gumbo without a roux. Spend your money instead on "Magnetic" or "Live In Tokyo 1986" by Steps Ahead when they truly were miles ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, Sophisticated, International.......1999-12-05

Some tracks on this CD such as "Festival" and "Stick Jam" connected instantly with my jazzy spirit. Steps Ahead is a smooth and sophisticated melting pot of various international jazz talents.
