Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Following her remarkably beautiful and top-selling crystal-bowl meditation CDs, heralded by critics, customers, and even Dr. Wayne Dyer, sound healer and teacher Deborah Van Dyke presents Travelling the Sacred Sound Current, audio companion to her instructive and finely wrought book of the same name. Van Dyke's musical offering, used in conjunction with the book or as a standalone tool, moves beyond relaxation and entertainment value into the realm of spiritual and therapeutic practice and purpose. Based on sound scientific principle--Dr. Andrew Weil's Sound Body, Sound Mind is highly recommended to this end--Van Dyke uses frequencies and tones to promote maximal benefit to body, mind, and spirit. These nine pieces bring together ancient mantras and chants, crystal bowl tones, drums, and didgeridoo, as well as nature sounds and Peruvian whistles, to create the thread-work of a profoundly interactive listening experience. Travelling the Sacred Sound Current resonates with deep beauty, peace, and truth. Neither far afield in woo-woo content nor loftily academic, Van Dyke's work is a welcome invitation, likely to appeal to both the intensive meditation student and the casual or novice seeker. --Paige La Grone

PLANETLIGHTWORKER Magazine, Oct/03, Editor's review: "Sometimes in life when I'm faced with the experience of otherworldly beauty I am simply awestruck, - to the point of being left speechless. This is one of those moments.

Deborah Van Dyke has created one of the most glorious New Age recordings I can remember. Crafted through the use of some very natural textures, its poetic rhythms are sensual and astonishingly pure. There is a complexity to the CD that is as unique as each human life. In just the first few breaths of listening I could feel the sweetest altering of my physical body taking place. A shift in posture, an expansion of my senses, and a fluttering of excitement in my heart's heart. The naturalness, the eloquent harmony and echo, all come together to offer such a tremendous gift to creation. For centering, grounding, gifting, doing healing work with others, Travelling the Sacred Sound Current intuitively knows the listener's need and exceeds that requirement with a universal gift of transformation".

*****UPDATE: Deborah's NEWEST CD RELEASE now available on Amazon.com: 'CHORDS OF THE COSMOS: Harmonies of the Zodiac with Crystal Bowls for Chakra Balancing, Meditation & the Healing Arts'.

4 out of 5 stars takes me to nirvana.......2007-01-29

Great for yoga and/or meditation. The only thing I'd change is the talking on the last track--I find it's distracting. Otherwise, I'd rate it five stars. My classes love it.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds of Light was better.......2006-12-26

There's too much caterwauling in this one. Not for meditation, maybe as a quiet background for ambience, I dunno. It didn't quite inspire any transcendental experiences for me.

3 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, but a good listen.......2005-11-08

I like this album, it is soothing and meditative. The music is compelling and the vocals are pleasant. Unfortunately, I can't give it a higher rating, because some of the Sanskrit words are incorrectly pronounced. I'm not trying to be picky, but you'd think that Deborah who's written a book on healing music would know how to pronounce the lyrics of her songs. With that in mind, the album is quite good.
namaste :)

4 out of 5 stars Very good if you like Indian mantras.......2005-08-12

The album is very enjoyable to listen to. If you like a meditative type of music. Several songs are chants (or mantras) that have been put to music. I liked this one very much.

5 out of 5 stars .......2005-01-31

I learned to pronounce Divine names I read in spiritual books,
but never heard chanted before, from this CD.
As a woman, following the voice of a women guide
was easier for me to echo, then male chants.
It is the perfect CD to play and chant along while ringing
my own crystal bowls and sets a relaxing, prayerful mood
before going to sleep, for me.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite French singer.......2007-03-14

It's a matter of taste and I like Patricia Kaas, especially these songs which remind me of my youth

5 out of 5 stars A very good (4.5) album.......2006-12-18

I like 7 of the songs in the album which is unusually high for me(usually it's 3-5 in my favorite disks). I rate it 4.5(not 5) nevertheless because one of my favorites("Mademoiselle chante le blues") is a live 2000 concert recording and her voice is not as smashing as it was in the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2005-10-27

I liked about half the songs. This is not my usual taste of music, but I like French, so I bought it just for something totally different and new.
D'allemagne(SP?) is my favorite song on there. The voice tone and music inflections are cool. In fact, that song is worth the price of the CD.
"Je voudrais connatre" is another good one.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection!.......2005-04-04

Patricia Kaas is absolutely the greatest female french singer there is (Julien Clerc being the best male french singer)! I've read reviewers who have said bad things about her. For those people, I suggest, as many others have suggested, to give the music a fair chance. If that doesn't work, try listening on a walkman, which increases the intensity of the music and Patricia's voice. For those who still don't like her: you really have major problems and should seek professional help immediately!
I like most of the songs, but there are two that really stand out to me as the greatest: #6: Les hommes qui passent (it is repetitive, but offers a new twist at every turn, pleasantly haunting and insidious, truly a perfect song in my opinion. Another is: #9: Entrer dans la lumiere: what a phenomenal song, especially near the end, another song of perfection! I also like the following songs:
#4 Quand Jimmy dit: a very fun song!
#10 Il me dit que je suis belle: one of the first songs I heard from Kaas. I like how it starts slow and then picks up.

I agree with a reviewer below, however: I also wish there were more pictures and the song lyrics, as it would be a major help in translating the songs. Also, where is the great song: "Une femme comme une autre?" Fellow reviewers: I deeply regret that french music is not very popular in the states. I feel this needs to change. We must raise the standards in the U.S. And Patricia Kaas music would be a fine place to start!

5 out of 5 stars Tres Belle.......2004-01-21

I was introduced to Patrica Kaas while I lived in Paris from 2002 till 2003. Exquisite voice, beautifully crafted songs and perfect production. If you are looking for just a "singer" or some mellow background noise....well OK, this will more than do BUT....this woman is an artist supreme...music to really STOP and listen to! Perfection! Sexy, talented and truly gifted.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of Michael Nyman.......2007-01-05

This truly is Michael Nyman's best works over an extensive period of time. This collection shows the range of his compositions and it is beautifully recorded. For any Michael Nyman fan this is a "must have"!

5 out of 5 stars What a couple : Nyman - Greenaway!.......2004-12-23

The films of Peter Greenaway are the perfect sum of craftsmanship : text , painting , photography , a minimalist script and frenetic exuberance . All the imaginable beauty and the unthinkable ugliness ; the hidden fears of the human being the timeless evilness . Greenaway films are made such a great symphony . You can identify the four movements in every single movie of this original film maker.
The happy joining with Michael Nyman was a very successful encounter . Because Nyman with his fertile creativity makes possible the most intimate motives and depicts with precision the right feeling and the implacable fate of the characters in the play.
From the draughtsman' s contract . to the sinister A zed and two noughts , passing for the cynical Drowning by numbers , the merciless vengeance in The cook , the thief , his wife and her lover and finally Prospero books based in the Tempest of William Shakespeare .
This album is a summation and digest of ten years of progress in the performance of musicv by a composer whom evidently is gifted and identified in his commitment , and joyous enthusiasm..

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Gifted Composer.......2003-01-27

Michael Nyman first got my attention with his most popular score to date, The Piano. Nyman's music in the film The Piano, I believe, has yet to be surpassed by any piano score to date. An accomplishment very well recieved by the composer himself, who's redone the score over and over again(I would too if I wrote it). Nyman's other works are not too familiar to me but they all sound very good. His work in Gattaca, although, is another one of Nyman's better scores. The score to Wonderland is probably the closes work to The Piano, feeling wise. Very intense and emotional. I give Michael Nyman 5 stars for his 21 years of composing music for film.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of his past work.......2002-02-03

Welcome to the word of minimalist classical music by Michael Nyman, the composer who has been credited with the birth of the minimalist movement. If you haven't heard of him before, chances is that you have heard his music already, since his compositions do get used in numerous film soundtrack, most notably in , which brought him numerous recognitions. Minimalist music can be quite fickled, you either get it or you don't. It owes its root to the folk music traditions, hence the emphasis is less on technical brilliance and more on the music's emotional impact. In this sense, this collection is a real mix. There are some tracks that are emotionally inspiring, such as 'fly drive' in disc 2, others struggled to make impact on me, but that might have to do with the mood I was in.

If you haven't bought his album before, this album is a good start, because it does give you a good overview of his past work. I would also highly recommend soundtrack, which should ease you into the world of Michael Nyman.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accents—it's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11

I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.

5 out of 5 stars This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14

Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.

The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-05-18

Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17

This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05

My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Homer and Jethro (Hall of Fame 2001).......2007-06-18

WAY COOL. If you are a fan of these two nuts and then you will want to add this to your collection. It is truely them at their all time best. I have several cassettes with thier works they are funny. But this CD is my all time best collection of their crazy parody music. A most excellent find and would recommend it to all.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to your Homer & Jethro collection.......2006-01-15

An entertaining album of Homer & Jetho's early work. If this is to be your first Home & Jethro album, though, I'd reccommend "America's Song Butchers, The Weird World of Homer and Jethro" instead. This "Hall of Fame" album obviously takes from old 78's and is pre hi-fi. Not a lot was done to clean the sound up; listening with headphones can be painful. But the lyrics are amusing and the talent is there. (Please also read Thomas Ferranti's review. I listened to the album and it does not contain the Wurlitzer overdub, thankfully)

Now if they'd just re-release "Barefoot Ballads", their excellent hillbilly album that introduced me to Homer and Jethro in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Not their very best but the best example of the early years........2004-08-27

Well - lets say it's the 1930s or 40s and you own a record company named King Records, and you sign Homer & Jethro to their first recording contract, produced countless 78rpm 10" discs, and sold a fair amount of them when all of a sudden, modern technology develops the 33rpm 12" disc, and no one wants to buy 78s anymore, Homer and Jethro move on to RCA records, and manage to get quiet a lot of attention so you repackage their back catalog via several 12" album collections.

Now it's many many years later. H&J have all but been forgotten. Except now - someone releases a couple of CDs of their RCA sides - and you get an offer from someone to license some of the old 78s recordings - and, well, to call it as such, maybe you won't sell as many, as if you billed it, instead, as some kind of "best-of" - and that's exactly what has occurred here. Well, for shame for shame. (Tho for all I know, maybe these WERE the most played 78s - could be.)

The material on this disc IS a must-have peek into those early days, when they werent as much into the country hillbilly humor then, and played alot of generally straightforward folk type stuff, albeit the humor IS still there - in fact - some of these early tracks are what got me hooked in the first place.

A good dip into the well of 78s, otherwise collecting dust. "Groundhog" is still a classic - their 'ad-libbing' is great - you can tell they were young, but really enjoying themselves!

Just a warning, though - back in the 70s, some idiot decided to take a batch of these 78s and record a new layer of wurlitzer organ or some such thing over the top - (as if it needed anything!)- especially not the sound of one of those cheesy keyboards with the silly synthesized drums and bassline!

So - I can't tell you if this is the one with or without that overdub or not. I was so excited to see I could write this review I didnt stop to see if there were any sound samples to hear! :(

Here's to you, and Homer and Jethro! Enjoy!

Most pop stars are lucky if they can create one enduring piece of cultural iconography for themselves. Unfortunately for Robert Palmer, his MTV-forged persona as impeccably tailored `80s crooner backed by a band of leggy fashion models largely overshadowed a career that was as eclectic as it was accomplished. Those who know the singer only by his video for "Addicted to Love" arguably don't know Palmer at all. Indeed, during the previous decade his ostensibly blue-eyed soul sensibilities had actually encompassed funk, New Orleans R&B, reggae, rock, and pop both Euro ("Give Me an Inch") and synth Gary Numan's "I Dream of Wires"). But that creative restlessness also seems to be the reason his commercially promising stint in the all-star Power Station (represented here by "Some Like It Hot" and an infectious cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong") was so short-lived. And it's perhaps why, after "Simply Irresistible" and the surge of alternative rock essentially marked the end of his MTV prime, his `90s work variously retrenched Palmer in soul (including a rewarding medley of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me"/"I Want You"), torch songs, Caribbean influences, and even Delta blues. This collection ably completes the musical circle Palmer began in the mid `70s, astutely chronicling pop's ongoing battle between style and substance along the way. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars ADDICTED TO ROBERT PALMER ? HERE'S YOUR FIX !.......2007-04-10

If you've just got to have some Robert Palmer music, this is what you want, right here! A 2-CD career spanning collection with 42 songs, it has something for everyone. His early mid-seventies funky rock n' soul songs like Sailin' Shoes and Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, which were AOR radio staples in their time, are here, as is the popular Give Me an Inch, down and dirty Spanish Moon, and big hit Bad Case of Lovin' You (Doctor, Doctor). Also on Disc 1 is Some Guys Have All the Luck, a hit for Rod Stewart. These days when Rod performs the song in concert, he pays tribute to Palmer by showing film clips of his late friend on the big screen over the stage. Disc 2 includes Power Station's Some Like It Hot, and his MTV mega hits Addicted To Love and Simply Irresistible. If you're not convinced Palmer can sing, take a listen to his cover of The Gap Band's Early In The Morning. Case closed. This disc also includes his excellant cover of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me(The Ecology)/I Want You medley. Looking over the track list to this album, you may not recognize some of the titles, but listening to this anthology will trigger memories, and you'll realize how many of these songs dominated radio playlists from 1974-2001. Robert Palmer Best of Both Worlds: Anthology 1974-2001 will definitely satisfy your craving for the man and his music.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the Many Shades of Robert Palmer.......2006-01-28

This is an excellent and diverse collection encompassing Palmer's entire career (with the exception of "Drive," the blues album he released just before his death in 2003). Those who know him only from his later hits may be surprised-as I admit I was-that Palmer had been recording for over a decade before Power Station, "Addicted to Love," and "Simply Irresistible." All those biggees are here, as well as early hits like "Every Kinda People" and "Bad Case of Lovin' You," but the best part for me was discovering lesser known gems like "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)," "Some Guys Have All the Luck" (bears almost no resemblance whatsoever to the Rod Stewart version), "Know By Now," and his fantastic covers of the Gap Band's "Early in the Morning" and Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)." An underappreciated artist whose range of material was far broader than his American successes would suggest. For any fan of rock, pop, blues, R&B/soul, and even a little techno, this is absolutely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars almost.... missing something.......2006-01-07

Although this is a pretty impressive collection, it is lacking. Having 'Power Station' songs on here is a big, big plus. Although the new release of 'Power Station's' collection is very good, it is nice to have it on here because of Palmer's voice. Also, the track with UB40. Kudos to those tracks present here.
However, not being a big fan of live recordings (they always seem to be lacking also) I wish his hits, like 'riptide' & 'looking for clues' would have been the studio versions.
'You are in my system' & 'Addicted to Love' remixes are good, but the originals really should have been on here as well as the remixed versions.
But any of the tracks from 'Ridin High' or 'Don't Explain' could have been here too. It seems those two wonderful song collections have been ignored. 'Hard Head', 'Witchcraft', 'Aeorplane', 'Housework', 'Goody Goody','Light Years','Your Mother Should Have Told You','Dreams To Remember', 'You're My Thrill', 'Baby It's Cold Outside', and 'Don't Explain' are all fantastic recordings and deserve some recognition. The tracks that are representative of those two cd's are the commercially successful tracks. Maybe that's what an anthology is all about.... I would have thought it was to showcase the talent of the individual.
'Sweet Lies' is a nice suprise on here, as well as 'Spanish Moon', unexpected nicities. 'Wham Bam Boogie','Honey' and/or 'Love Takes Time' would have had a place here too... but alas, in the missing also.
I guess someone as enduring and versatile as Robert Palmer deserves more than just a flashy collection labeled 'Anthology'. One would think he deserves a 'Showcase' collection to show off his non-commercial talent as well as his commercial talent.
The packaging is very nice, I like the inner flip-disc holder method as opposed to others. The booklet and liner notes are very well done... but again missing something.
I would highly recommend including this cd in your collection IF, and only if, you already have 'Addictions' both volumes 1 & 2, 'Ridin High', 'Honey', and 'Don't Explain'. Then, indeed only then would you have a true representation of this fine entertainer that would span ALL of his career.

3 out of 5 stars Some Like It Warm: a missed opportunity.......2005-07-22

There's a a lot of good to said for this collection. While there have been several in the past like "Addictions" Vol. 1 & 2 where he went back and remixed tracks or added new vocals, or "The Very Best Of" album, there had not been a good comprehensive collection of Palmer until this one. Perhaps that's why it's sold as a two disc set. All the hits are here. This includes a few remixed tracks from "Addictions" which may annoy purests, although I think his updated versions of "You Are In My System" is improved over the original. You can understand why he felt he could give a better performance. The new versions of "Give Me An Inch" is beautiful and soulful, and "Every Kinda People" has moving, sweet colors of Marvin Gaye. It includes Power Station tracks and soundtrack songs ("Sweet Lies"). Also the album's 24 bit remastering is top-notch. Everything here is crisp and balanced with very little analog hiss from the originals.

"Anthology" goes from "Sneaking Sally" all the way through the "R & B" albums covering three labels, so you have to tip your hat to Island Records for putting it all together. Yet the collection has some strange quirks. For example, they use the single version of "Get It On (Bang A Gong)", yet they have the album version of "Some Like It Hot". The album ends with a wimper with awful live versions of "Johhny & Mary" and "Looking For Clues" from "Live From The Apollo". His performance was weak and the recording quality is flat and thin. Just a waste where there should have had the originals. Just because it's an anthology does mean every album has to represented especially when the Apollo album is so bad. Some tracks are just lame like "Want You More". On the other hand, it would be a shame to just have "The Very Best Of" album becuase there's so much good stuff that's not on that one that is on "Anthology" like "Man Smart, Woman Smarter", "Pride", "Some Guys Have All The Luck", and more. It's a quality anthology but also misses its potential.

5 out of 5 stars A great Robert Palmer anthology!.......2004-11-17

I very much enjoyed this anthology, I've liked Robert Palmer, for a long time. All great songs are on here and if I were to have one complaint about this compilation, it would be that one of his 80's songs wasn't included - I don't even know the name of it, but I would recognize it if I heard it. I was sorry to not see it on there, but oh well.Anyway, I would recommend this anthology to any pop/rock fan and pop/rock that is soul-flovored. Also a must if you like Robert Palmer!

4 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Cajun Music.......2004-05-11

As one who is an uneducated fan of Cajun music, I can vouch for "Encore Encore" as a good introduction to the genre. Perfect for the stereo for an outdoor barbeque, BeauSoleil tosses off traditional two-step with ease ("Le Chanky-Chank Francais"). This is the kind of good-time Cajun music you associate with bowls of jambalaya and gumbo on a sweaty Louisiana night, and it's a lot of fun.

BeauSoleil is not a one-note pony, however, and "Encore Encore" shows off some of the band's different influences. "Conja" and "A Bebe Waltz" are two examples of tunes that don't fit the stereotypical Cajun tune, but they are also lots of fun.

I'm not sure what would be a five-star intro to Cajun, but if you want to get a good, representative album that gives you a sense for the music, both its classical forms and its various tangents, "Encore Encore" would be for you.

Despite accompanying a comedy with a nicely hot-cha-cha premise--Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt as gold-digger con artists--this soundtrack disc offers very little in the way of truly saucy music. Besides Alison Krauss's take on "Baby, Now That I've Found You," three Antonio Carlos Jobim classics performed by Astrud Gilberto, Sarah Vaughan, and a stiff Susannah McCorkle are about the only suggestion of real sex here. The What Women Want CD offered Sinatra and Bennett, so why the third-rate lounge-act version (by Michael Andrew and Swingerhead) of "The Best Is Yet to Come" included here? That's not to mention the snooze-inducing singer-songwriter tracks (Shawn Colvin, Inara George & Bryony Atkinson) that amount to musical non sequiturs. A puzzling album, at best. --Rickey Wright

P.S. Thanks to all for mentioning that this song was not included in the soundtrack. That was the whole reason for looking for the soundtrack!!!

2 out of 5 stars RE: a music fan.......2005-10-04

If the song that you thought had a "brazil flavor" was acoustic, it is by russian musician Zhenya Rock, with the band ZEEROK. I cant think of the song title off the top of my head, but it is on his website (...). Hope that was what you were looking for

2 out of 5 stars Oh My Love - John Lennon.......2004-06-29

I enjoyed Heartbreakers and thought the soundtrack would be awesome... sadly, it did not have one of the best songs played in the movie "Oh my Love" by John Lennon. I noticed some other people mentioned it on here, as well. If you are looking for a place to find it, try Anthology (4 cd box set) CD 1 or Imagine. Once again, the soundtrack was OKAY but they really should have included Lennon!

2 out of 5 stars Please email me.......2004-01-14

Leaving JOHN LENNON out is horrible--and I have another question--there was a song I recognized with a Brazil flavor--when Weaver and Gene were on the couch later in the movie (soon before he dies),and it a lovely song--and it is just not there. These soundtracks are often a rip-off because I often get more excited about the soundtrack than the movie--does anyone remember the song I am talking about? THANKS!

1 out of 5 stars They left out the best song in the movie!!!!!.......2003-10-28

When I was a young girl I used to love a song in the movie Little Darlings: "Oh My Love". It sounded like John Lennon. But when I got older I bought Double Fantasy and His Greatest Hits, and there was no "Oh My Love". Then a couple of months ago I was watchinh Heartbreakers(I hated it) and "Oh My Love" went on and my heart leaped...I could finally buy this beautiful song. So I go on here lookin for the Heartbreakers soundtrack and lo and behold, some of you Reviewers are tellin me it aint on there! What were they thinkin???? That songs the only redeeming factor of the movie. sigh. Guess I'll have to look for "Imagine"

5 out of 5 stars U96's best album ever!!.......2000-10-05

U96 where taking time off since there last album "Heaven" on 1996. Now, About four years later they're coming out with new cd which supposed to answer for a greatest hits tittle.

U96 did it again, the album's value is extreemly high for the fans, because it includes the highlights all over the past and the present of the group.

i own this tittle, very recommended for the fans and dance-trance lovers out there! it's U96's best album ever.

3 out of 5 stars finally - what?.......2000-07-23

for quite some years, we haven't heard anything from them. and now they are back, finally? well for a true fan, maybe. but be aware of this: most of the tracks are from the last album 'heaven'. and several of these songs don't belong to a best of. while some of the great songs aren't there at all. some new songs have made it to this cd and they are really great for any u 96 fan, really!

If you are a fan who haven't bought all their album, then you must buy this one. but if you, like me, have all their previous albums, then don't! all you get from this is 'heaven' all over again and a few new tracks, and an extra-cd that basicly is one large track (21 minutes?) with old hits that mostly are on the best of.

This cd proves only one thing, u 96 are almost spelling it out for us: we're history, we have nothing new to give you, therefore we'd like to give out our 'best' songs one more time so that you wont forget us.
