Album Description
VNV Nation's last album, Matter and Form (2005), was hailed by critics for its high-impact array of tone and sound, from hard hitting anthems to euphoric symphonies. In April 2007, the band is poised to release its next album, Judgement, which promises to be their most powerful and unique release to date. Having already broken the boundaries between industrial and other alternative music styles on Matter and Form, VNV Nation take this idea to new heights by creating a sound that is a collision of ever present insight, energy, emotion, past and future. From its fast pace, pounding bass-line and melody to its electric-guitar like synth sounds and Ronan Harris's thought provoking vocals, "Nemesis" rings through as one of VNV's most aggressive anthems to date. "Testament," which could be described as an electronic-indie anthem, "The Farthest Star" and "Carry You" provide a bright, hopeful outlook, while "Movement" presents a dark trance flavor to the band's ever expanding repertoire of song possibilities. The omniscient "Descent" sweeps in with dark electronic rhythms and lyrics that describe complete devastation, giving the yin to the yang of the ethereal ballad "Secluded Spaces" that makes you feel like nothing in the world could be more beautiful. With every album, VNV Nation manages to tear down more and more musical boundaries. Judgement will be their greatest achievement thus far.

They have been consistently better........2007-07-10
If you are a fan of VNV Nation from the days of Praise the Fallen and Empires then about half of the tracks on this album are for you. However the other tracks are experiments in a trend that they have been following since Futureperfect. I am still not sure how I feel about this. I enjoy electronic music, but I feel that there is something amiss with Futureperfect and Matter + Form. All the same, I would have to say that for the die-hard VNV fan this will definitely be a good addition to your collection.

I like it........2007-06-26
I don't think this album is nearly as good as Empires, but certainly don't think it's crap. I have grown to love VnV Nation. I will admit that sometimes I wish that I had a clearer understanding of what the lyrics are about, but I think I get it. I have my interpretation and I guess that's the only interpretaion that matters. VnV Nation make excelent Future pop music that is great music to drive to, dance to, or play around your house while your cleaning. High energy trance beats with pasionate singing and dark atmosphere. Great production by Ronan Harris, and another good album. I'm not dissapointed, but there are quite a few people who are.
Excellent!.......2007-06-14
This CD is wonderful for any VNV Nation fan. I've listened to this album time and time again and truly a great album.
I highly suggest purchasing this album!
Another great VnV Nation album!!.......2007-06-13
This is one of those bands that pisses people off because they have become populur in the "underground" scene. The truth be, VnV Nation have never released a radio hit in the States, never a top 40 video, never a Rolling Stone cover, never, never, never...nada! This band keeps pumping out solid electro/synth pop albums that pack out every dance floor in the goth/industrial club scene accross the map. This album is no exception to thier greatness. All of the songs are deep, emotionally charged, introspective, metaphoric, and classic future pop anthems that you want to play over and over again in your CD player. This is the most important band in the entire future pop genre!!!!!! (Just in case you didn't allreday know).
Judgement hitting it off to one of thier better albums.......2007-06-13
All around this album is very well put together, Nemesis (song 6) is especially good.

Picking up where the breakthrough funk-pop of Control left off, Janet Jackson and her production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis laced Rhythm Nation with high-minded references to societal ills--seldom the favored province of dance music, but a daring attempt nonetheless. Songs like "State of the World" and "The Knowledge" follow in the tradition of "free your mind and your ass will follow." Still, aside from the title track, it was the pure pop fare and dance music that stormed the charts: "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," and "Come Back to Me" concentrate on the politics of personal relationships, not public policy, while "Black Cat" burns the place down with a fierce burst of hard rock. Rhythm Nation 1814 doesn't necessarily hang together thematically, but it's so chock full of hits, you scarcely notice. --Daniel Durchholz

Really Terrific .......2007-02-16
This is really terrific. I listened to this album a lot in 1989-90 while all its hit singles were spinning into the charts and playing from the radio.
Janet Jackson was 23 when she made this excellent album, and it remains her best work. She had really good producers on her team, wrote strong social-comment lyrics, and made stylish videos , usually with squads of well-drilled dancers performing funk workouts in formation . The mission statement on Track 1 of Rhythm Nation is the dream of a "nation with no geographic boundaries... free from colour lines" and this admirable ideal is promoted on funky title tune. The lead single Miss You Much also funked out with a staccato beat and hit US #1 in October 1989. Further hits were also squarely in the dance/pop tradition , such as the upbeat Escapade, the happy-sounding Love Will Never Do ( Without You ) and the groovy Alright . Social injustice is highlighted on the rather-good ballad Livin' In A World ( They Didn't Make ) and the uptempo State Of The World , while the rocking number Black Cat really works very well, with its heavy rock guitar sound precisely capturing the song's raunchy sentiments. The Knowledge is an angular funk groove all about getting a good education. Janet's albums always balanced funky and smooth elements, so here we had the nice, stately love ballad Come Back To Me and the seductive bedroom tune Someday Is Tonight to represent the softer side of her music. Interspersed throughout the running order of the disc are sound snippets and fragments of commentary that help to link the songs together rather like a sound collage. A very good idea !
Every song here succeeds - that's why Rhythm Nation 1814 deserves a 5 star rating.
Highly Recommended to all music fans.
1989 was a great year for music. "Rhythm Nation" was no exception!.......2007-02-15
It takes alot for an artist to create a hit single or two, but it's quite another to create an album chock-full of hits that have endured for nearly 20 years (mind-boggling to think that much time has elapsed since this album's release!).
Just looking at the song titles, I knew just about every song without having to listen to a single note. When I played the CD, it brought me back to a time when originality was celebrated and encouraged in pop music. It also reminded me of a time when pop radio used to play these songs over and over again, yet I never seemed to mind because they just sounded better each time.
That all seems like another world today - to put it mildly!
One of the worst decades in human history was coming to a close and pop music legends were making the most of the moment by releasing great albums in 1989, alot of which had a common theme - social injustices and being on the threshold of something new (which we were): Phil Collins released "...But Seriously" that year along with Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence," Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever," Billy Joel's "Storm Front," and The B-52's "Cosmic Thing." The Fine Young Cannibals and De La Soul, among many others, also contributed to an end-of-the-decade blitz of great music. Janet Jackson added her own dynamic contribution with "Rhythm Nation 1814."
This album deserved all the hype it got (which, along with the original "Batman," got quite alot!). I remember the futuristic video for the title track on MTV (back when the channel did something revolutionary - they actually played music videos all day). I also vividly recall the intense radio airplay the majority of this album got over time (which is how I got to know this, minus the Interludes): "State of the World," "Miss You Much," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Escapade," "Black Cat," and "Come Back To Me."
Reading the reviews here on Amazon, it clicked that Janet accomplished something that's rare for dance music: She was able to include serious messages regarding social injustices (among other topics) alongside danceable tunes and the standard slow songs.
This is definitely Janet's masterpiece. It's a pleasure to finally have this in my collection. Her voice is soothing and the overall message is quite powerful. - Donna Di Giacomo
JJ's Best Album.......2007-01-24
This Album has got a bit of Every style of music on it...Rock, Dance, R'n'B, Funk and Pop. It is an awaesome album and spawned 7 Top 10 hits. It has a lot of Interludes 8 in fact, and 12 Original Tracks.
All of the songs are good, and even though I had never been a big fan of Janet Jackson, I am a fan of this Album. "Escapade" and "Love Will Never Do" were instantly reconizable once I heard them, and are Excellent Pop songs, and I remember them getting a lot of Radio play back in 89 when this album was released and also the following year. This album definetly has some of the best songs of her career.
Besides being A great Pop Mainstream Album, it is also a Concept album, that deals with the Problems of the World and Society. Many of the albums tracks deal with this. Songs such as "State Of The World" and "Livin' In A World They Didn't Make", whilst other tracks such as "Lonely" and "Come Back to Me" deal with lost love. Most of the Album deals with Poverty,Violence, Racism and the Ignorance and Perceptions that Society has.
My favourite songs on the album are "State Of The World" which deals with the homeless problem, Drugs and Violence in Society. Even though it has a dark message it is Very upbeat and a good song. "The Knowlege" preaches for you to find out about the things you don't know about and find the Truth in life so you can protect yourself and understand the world better, and is a nice little piece of Upbeat Funk.
"Love Will Never Do" was another Favourite of mine, and a big hit from this album. I love the way this Song starts with the Chimes and thumping and then it explodes into a Bombastic Pop song, with a great chorus that you'll be singing along to instantly once U recognise it. "Livin' In a World [They Didn't make]" is a Beautiful song about the Innocence of Children and how it hurts for them growing up in a Society that is corrupted by violence, and Hate, and how they could get sucked in to that and make the situation worse. It has some beautiful heartfelt and true lyrics. The song ends with a news clipping of an incident where a Gun man open fires in a California school playground killing himself and 5 children. This really makes you think about the way people act and the senseless violence that destroys lives, and how there is no need for it.
"Escapade" is another song I reconised right from the start with it's chiming bells and Pop feeling. Once again the Chorus will have you singing along with it. A totally Fun Track.
The Hard Rock of "Black Cat" is addictive and is a great reconisable song. One of the Album's Hilights. The Spanish tinged Ballads "Lonely" and "Come Back To Me" are Beautiful and Heartfelt, and some of my favourite tracks on the album. "Lonely" has a beautiful message to it and sounds very relaxing and the spanish guitars make it the perfect R'n'B Love Song. "Come Back To Me" is equally as good.
Overall I Enjoyed this Album, and Feel it is JJ'S best work. Any fan of Rock, Pop, Funk or R'n'B should have this in their music collection.
One of the Best Albums of 1989!.......2007-01-14
After the breakthrough album "Control" three years prior, Janet was back with another album with simular structure, "Rhythm Nation 1814", a concept album that partly deals with social injusticies (In particular State of the World, Living in a World, The Knowledge and most of the interludes) But many other songs are just strong contemporary R&B without being political in any way. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again produce the majority of songs and make it just as well as on "Control". Perhaps this album is even more mixed, with ballads, uptempo's and even some rock. Out of 7 single releases all made the top 5! and 3 would also top the bilboard charts. 7 songs from the same album reaching the top 5 became a new record. This album got as many as 20 songs, but removing the interludes there are only 12 actual singles. This is as far as I know one of the first if not the first album with interludes, something that would be commonly used in R&B and Hip Hop later on. But on this album the interludes actually does make sense and they are not just about Janet's ego like on latter albums. Before I'll go to the songs, this is obviously Janet's best album with "Control" and there are plenty of worthwile songs to enjoy here.
The first song a dance number "Rhythm Nation" where we'll find Janet dressed in a black military uniform in the video (just like on the album cover) preaches world unity among races and nations. Although Janet's singing here is below average it's a catchy rhythmic dance anthem nonetheless and a good opener that gives a clear message on what's coming. "State of the World" is simular and deals with very disturbing issues, but this song was only released for radio airplay and not as a single, too bad. "The Knowledge" continues with simular issues until the number 1 smash "Miss You Much" arrives and deals with more lightweight issues compared to the first three songs, basically Love. Next song is a ballad and it's called "Love Will Never Do", In the video we'll see a new sexy janet dance with a guy, simular to what her brother did on "In the Closet", Janet wanted to show other sides of herself on this album and prove she was no fluke. This song also reached the top of the charts even if it's hardly one of her more famous songs.
"Livin' In A World" is yet another slow paced social conscious song but it wasn't released a single. Next single "Alright" is typical for it's time with new jack swing and it also got a memorable video in 30's style. "Escapade" another number #1 is perhaps the most pop oriented song and in my oppinion best song of this album. This portay Janet at her peak where everything she did became a hit. "Black Cat" is pop/rock and also quite unique. Janet wrote it all by herself. "Lonely" a great ballad, not to be mistaken with "I Get Lonely" from a later album is just great and should have been a single. "Come Back to Me" (#2) is very simular and so is "Someday Is Tonight". All ballads.
Overall, What more can I say, this is Janet Jackson at her best. "Rhythm Nation" is one of her best albums at the peak of her career. Critics thought she was a fluke but instead she (with help from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis) would record an album that was perhaps even better then "Control". The concept doesn't really work since only half of the songs are part of it, but the hits!. 7 big hits in one album is alot, and for them this is a great purchase and a classic album aswell.

Distinct Style.......2006-11-05
PTF2012 is a great album in the techno/trance/future pop genre. Although I prefer VNV Nations album "Empires", PTF2012 is a good compliment to it. VNV Nation breaks out of the the monotonous beat-box drone of a lot of stereotypical techno music, and delivers much more internally stimulating music. VNV Nation's style is more like poetry set to an electronic track, which invokes emotions that are generally left untouched by mainstream music (which plays songs about two things: love and hate). VNV Nations invokes personal integrity, national pride and honor, internal conflict, determination and the list goes on. Unique to their style is subtle allusion to historical events, which any good student can appreciate. A personal favorite is the song "Procession", a powerful song, which really gets the listener energized, until the eerie lyrics reveal the underlying themes of the song, pointing out how frighteningly easy it is to turn our own passionate responses into blind rage.
My first introduction to VNV Nation.......2005-07-10
'Praise The Fallen'is the title of this VNV Nation CD from 1999. And this is my introduction to this hardcore
electronica/industrial trance outfit. Being a Delerium/Front Line Assembly fan I saw VNV as my own personal progression to explore new music and new sounds. I basically came across VNV Nation through Amazon.com reviews and picks and decided to buy this album to have a 'little taste' of what VNV is. I am now a fan, this is a style of music that one can dance to, chill out too as well as have as background music for a party with friends. All the tracks are interesting to listen too, the drums are worked in well with the synths and industrial beats. The vocalist is dark and mysterious and for this style of music that is a underpinning success. 'Joy', 'Solitary' and 'PTF2012' were the picks for me from this monumental album. And I now will look out for more VNV Nation releases.
If you like the works of Leeb & Fulber you will enjoy this from the anthem sounding VNV Nation.
Like Cutting Your Soul on a Blade of Darkness........2005-01-29
Listening to this album is like plunging yourself into a dark abyss and cutting your soul on a blade of darkness. To be human means to be accused, judged, and condemned by this testament to humankind, yet hearing souls will revel and glory in the condemnation, and the sentence is denial and death or acceptance and understanding.
From the very start, humanity is on trial, and the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of annihilation due to acts of extreme injustice and ultimate disorder. Hopelessness and cries of injustice scream through and pervade every moment of this intense spectrum of light and darkness that ranges from moments of defeat to times of glorious victory. Yet even in victory there is an impending emptiness and isolation, leaving the listener lost on the isle of doom and despair.
There are times when the listener questions the motives and meaning for the music, but overall, it's a glorious tribute to those who have fallen into the pit of injustice and unmerciful disaster. From "Chosen" all the way through to the untitled hidden track, the music soars and falls like a bird with clipped wings, like a parade of souls searching for answers that never come. In "Chosen," the almost hopeless journey begins with railing accusations of scourges on mankind and inhuman deeds of 'cataclysmic, unnatural, and unreasoning' destruction. From there, "Joy" fights back and shouts through with lyrics of defiance, posing such disturbing questions as, "Why do I love when I still feel pain; when does it end; when's my work done? Why do I fight? Why do I feel that I carry a sword to the battlefield?"
From there, the march continues with "Procession," a song of vengeance and warnings of judgment and resurrection, disturbing the listener with such violent lyrics as, "And we who were so scorned will always wish to make their end, our words to still their voice, out hands to break their worthless necks." It then continues with words of future triumph like, "One day we'll see our names in stone where fires burn, the great who silent stood among you, never praised nor never known." The epic continues as "Voice" takes it from there and defiantly shouts, "We are not the same! You will hear my voice!"
The darkness thickens with "Forsaken," an absolutely haunting song of sorrow that takes you on a lyric-less yet positively melodic journey into the abyss of human despair and loneliness. From the pit of desolation, the phoenix rises through the flames in "Ascension," an eight minute-plus voiceless refusal of surrender.
The height of the journey comes with "Honour," an unimaginably intense philosophical questioning, a trial within itself, with an accompanying moving beat. "Mothers stand in vain and cry" while the poet interrogates the by-now miserable listener with such propositions as, "Shall I recall when justice did prevail? No reason to be found why reason did fail." And just as the listener has confined himself permanently to realms of night, the poet sifts through the destruction and demands to "Stand your ground this is what we are fighting for, for our spirit and laws and ways! Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war! For heaven or hell we shall not wait! Shall I think of honour as lies? Or lament its aged, slow demise?"
Onward continues the journey with "Burnout," which seems almost like a burnout of reason, but thankfully we arrive at shore again with the epic "Solitary," which truly gives words of hope such as, "And if rain brings winds of change, let it rain on us forever. I have no doubts form what I've seen; I have never wanted more. With this line I'll mark the past as a symbol of beginning." This beacon of light is a welcome reprieve from the endless darkness that permeates the soul of this album, and we find ourselves even more thankful for the moments of remembrance and regeneration in the final three tracks "PTF2012," "Schweigeminute," which is a literal minute of silence given to the listener as a chance of reflection and contemplation, and the untitled hidden track.
Overall, this is an utterly spiritually crushing yet intellectually and morally elevating work of art, and even better, it is but the genesis of the VNV Nation empire, whose genius continues in the insubstantial castles of darkness of Empires and its subsequent beam of light Futureperfect.
Sloppy, repetitive and untalented........2005-01-27
VNV Nation is a terrible example of the music i love. Their compostition is weak, repetitive and slow. The pentamiter of the lyrics does not match with rythym or bass. The vocals are slow sloppy and untalented. Listening to this vocalist is like listening to the jaw bone of a donkey being scraped along a chalk board in a wide hallway.
Intriguing, although somewhat simplistic..........2003-12-13
Praise The Fallen (PTF) is a very well conceived EBM album. EBM is basically a lighter and faster variant of Industrial music, and even though PTF is significantly faster than anything put out by that bunch of anorexic labradors (by that I mean Skinny Puppy), it is not that much lighter. The beats in this record are utterly ferocious, and this is not a bad thing. However, at times, the beats tend to overwhelm the melody.
The melodies, although at times complex, are subordinated to pounding drums during some of the tracks, and this seems to grate owing to the fact that the beats are as rough as a cheese grater. If the melodies in some of the songs were played louder and more frequently, this would be a brilliant album. However, the dark and haunting sounds are sometimes drowned in repetitive drumming all to often, resulting in a record that has less melody, and dramatic impact, than it potentially had. The only songs that really manage to strike the balance (and also be the best tracks on the album IMO) are Joy, Procession and Honor. These songs are so catchy, and awfully danceable, that they would turn a retirement home into a rave. Still, most of the other tracks can get too rough, or, suprisingly, too sedate.
This, however, doesnt mean that VNV's first big album is bad. In fact, it is very good! The lyrics, although sometimes too preachy, are quite intelligent and compelling, and the times in the songs where they allow the melody to shine through are utterly breathtaking. If you are new to EBM and want to start with the sound of the Berlin Philharmonic being ripped apart by chainsaw-weilding Nazis (which this album is wonderful at creating), then I would reccomend this. However, a softer (and more depressing) alternative for an EBM novice would be Failure by Assemblage 23.
Although this record is too polar (your choice between sheet-metal instrumentals or boring ballads, with too few 'middle ground' tracks), it shows excellent promise and a vision that was fully realised in VNV's next album, Empires.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-05-30
This VNV Nation album is awesome, but all of their albums are awesome too. The music and the lyrics are great in Form + Matter and I highly recommend it.
This is not industrial........2007-05-28
This is a synthpop music. If you're looking for the hard-edged sound in Praise the Fallen, or Empires, try Front Line Assembly or Infected Mushroom. This album (much like Futureperfect) is mostly pop music. It is an entirely different style for VNV Nation, but it's one of the best damn synthpop albums I've heard. I really like all the song, except for one: Entropy. Even the lyrics, which VNV usually excells with, are bland in this song. Listen to the samples first, and if it's the kind of thing you're into, get it. Don't give it bad credit because it's not as dark or industrial as their earlier works.
VNV Nation's weakest album.......2007-05-14
Much as I love VNV Nation's other albums, this one just flopped. Although Chrome was fantastic, and Arena and Perpetual were good, the rest of the album sounds like the soundtrack to a coma/seisure depending on the track. It pales in comparison to the brilliance of Judgement or Empires.
Matter + Form.......2007-02-19
This album is a lot more musical than their previous ones. The music is smooth, instead of the grating electronic beats found on the earliest albums. Harris relies more on his voice then in several past albums, such as Empires and Praise the Fallen. This is probably most evident in Chrome, which was also released as a single. There are also a few instrumental songs, including Colours of Rain, Strata, Interceptor, and Lightwave. The last three have some pretty decent techno beats.
I liked all of the songs except for Colours of Rain and Endless Skies. They were too slow for my tastes, but it's very possible that many people will like these songs.
It's hard to compare this album to earlier ones, since the style changes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). But I do think the new style caters better to generic techno lovers. That said, VNV Nation is electronica, and there's a significant difference between it and your basic techno/dance music.
I give product 4 stars. It's not the best techno music ever (kind of dull compared to some groups, definitely not the "dance" genre), but it's a pretty solid album. If you like VNV Nation mainly because of their earlier sound, this album may not suit you. But in general, all techno lovers should find this to be a pretty decent CD.
Great CD.......2007-01-10
Every song on this CD is great. I originally purchased it just because I liked a couple of songs, but quickly realized the entire CD was full of great music.

My personal Xanax.......2007-06-10
What can be said that the others haven't? They did a great job, but I'll repeat what they've said anyway: "Futureperfect" is just a beautiful album. The lyrics offer hope, and the instrumentals are nice enough additions to the mix. Yes, there's a few others who do the trance-y beats with the industrial sound (i.e. Funker Vogt at times), but nothing is quite like this one.
It may take awhile for this record to sink in for some people, as most of these songs are 5-6 minutes long. But no moment is wasted here really. The first VNV song I heard was "Beloved" a few years back. I was taken aback on how incredible that song was. It's still my favorite VNV song and one of my all-time favorites.
And that song is really not a fluke. There's the more space-y sounding songs like "Carbon" and the album speaks of its futurism without having to do with the current political climate. Ronan Harris is one of the greatest song writers of the industrial scene. Most people expect the abrasion of Skinny Puppy and Ministry when they hear the term "industrial," but this record is a different kind of horse. Where some of those artists have silly lyrics about being empty, this album never resorts to that. Ronan doesn't have a wide range in vocals but the passion can be heard and for me, that's what matters more anyway. More hopeful lyrics abound and we get other gems like "Genesis."
I guess what helps for me is both the music and the lyrics. Sometimes when I'm worried and/or overly anxious, this album helps me calm down, no matter how cheesy that actually sounds. Most fans seem to view Empires as the finest hour, and while that one's pretty good, I feel like this album has that one eclipsed. This fourth LP from a fantastic "futurepop" group deserves a place in your collection, if you like electronic and industrial music.
What a great album!.......2007-04-25
The whole album is stellar, but my favorite hs to be Electronaut. The rythm and beat are mesmerising, and every time I finish listening to it I yearn to hear it again. Carbon is also quite good, it is very touching and relaxes you. GET THIS ALBUM, you wull not be diaaspointed by any means.

Sure, I'll give it 4..........2006-03-20
Futureperfect is a mixed bag of really cool and not-so-really cool ebm/future-pop tunes. But the really cool tunes make it hard not to buy, and out-number the not so cool. Generally, there are either slow ambient tracks, or dancy fast-paced tracks...there is one or two in-between. Most tracks have a trancy melodic synth lead that hooks you in. I think if the vocalist could learn a few more notes in the musical scale, vnv just might be one of my favorite bands...but unfortunately, he only knows about 3 or 4. This is fairly good tho, I fence-walk on recommending this to any synth/ebm critic.
timeless sophistocation and emotional ressonance.......2005-09-26
i absolutely love this group. and this album. the lyrics are amazing. tinged with every conceivable emotion and weaving an endless and often devasting tapestry so wrought with the debilitating anguish of lonliness and the strong yet paradoxically volitile grasp on hope and redemption that it becomes poetry, pure and unfettered. the music is equally strong and versatile, the beats are engaging and seem to remain, dancing in the mind long after a song ends. listening to futureperfect, i often feel like a voyeur, gaping into the deepest recesses of the human spirit-- its vulnerability, couragousness, acceptance of the inevitability of cruel, mundane reality while clinging with desparate hope to the triumph of a spiritual awakening. their entire discography is shakespeare set to music--the exploration of nearly every facet of human nature and the human condition as a spiritual and psychological whole. this album is a chapter which probes most intensely at the dichotmoies of hope and despair, aspiration and acquiessance, individual and collective, and above all, the inescapable earning for and failure to realize LOVE.
One Song Spoke To My Heart.......2005-09-06
My daughter purchased this cd, and knowing my taste in music, told me there was one on it I would probably like. One.
Boy, was she right. The song is Beloved, and it is perhaps the most hauntingly beautiful song of love lost I've ever heard. I cried the first time I heard it, and every time since.
There are actually a few other songs that are okay, but I've been blinded by the beauty of Beloved. This song rates right up there with Sara M's In The Arms of an Angel, same sentiment, only to a techno beat.

Best of VNV Nation.......2007-05-07
I've bought several VNV Nation albums recently, and this is definitely my favorite. Ronan Harris's songs become technically more complex starting with this CD, and music is very smooth (as opposed to the harsher beats in "Praise the Fallen" and "Advance and Follow"). If you're looking for a great vocalist, this isn't the CD for you. Ronan lets the music do most of the work, but the lyrics are very evocative.
The first track is pretty dull, but right after the songs pick up. "Kingdom" starts off the CD with a decent trance-like sound. "Rubicon" is one of my favorite tracks, as it combines moving lyrics (taken in context with the song title) with great music that fits it surprisingly well. "Fragments" is a quick song, with a beat reminiscent of songs on "Praise the Fallen." The rest of the songs are excellent as well. The album has a lot of fast, upbeat sounding tracks; only three are dull, in my opinion (though "Distant" should sound that way, given its context).
Overall, it's a great CD with good lyrics and good music. If you like smooth sounding electronic music, this is for you.
Classic VNV Nation.......2007-05-06
VNV Nation is easily one of my all time favorite bands. I discovered VNV Nation about four years ago and have been hooked since then. What has always appealed to me is the combination of heartfelt lyrics and epic dance beats. I consider the band's third album "Empires" to be classic VNV Nation. After seven years since its release, "Empires" still sounds remarkably fresh with its crisp, infectious synth melodies. My favorite song has to be the lush ballad "Standing" with its haunting melodies and emotionally moving lyrics. The combination of the melodies and lyrics always moves me to the very core of my soul every time I listen to the song. I think this song is one of the best songs Ronan Harris has ever written. The lyrics to "Kingdom" are also great in an epic and grandeur sense. My favorite instrumental track is "Saviour". I will say that I prefer the vox version of "Saviour" (found on the rare "Burning Empires" EP). The instrumental track has a good dance beat. I like the build up in the song but the song is a lot better with Ronan's vocals. I am not really too big on the other instrumental tracks on the album like "Firstlight". They didn't have the same catchy pop hooks that "Saviour" has. Another minor flaw is that Ronan's vocals tends to be monotonous. Most of the time I am not bother by his vocals but if I am not in a good mood, I will tend to find his vocals rather annoying but that is rare. Another great song on the album is "Fragments" which is a bit more harsh and abrasive than "Standing" and "Kingdom". The high level of energy in the song shines through and will make the listener want to jump and down. "Distant (Rubicon II)" turns down a few notches. It is another wonderful ballad. It is a nice segueway into "Standing". If there was one album by VNV Nation I would recommend to anyone curious about the band, I strongly recommend getting "Empires" first.
Musical Mass Culture Introspective.......2007-02-21
There are very few people out there, let alone bands, who are willing to broach the concepts that VNV thrusts into its songs - nevermind the fact that the result sounds absolutely superb.
This album is a marker for the band, engaging EBM and Industrial sounds and rythms with unadulterated vocals rather uncommon to the scene: self-labeled "futurepop" that runs the emotional gamut from slow and subtle to the heart-pounding, foot-stomping adrenaline rush. The album is a favorite with diehard, longstanding VNV fans as well as those new to the sound altogether; the lyrics are painfully insistant, to the point of easily being interpreted a call to action. The vocals are also a crowning gem, and are organic - generally an unsynthesized breath of fresh air - and feel more like active poetry or the oral traditions of ages long gone. The sounds are better executed than armfulls of other bands, and the combination is unforgettable and irreplacable.
VMV deserves a place with the music greats, and thus far have never been matched in depth or skill in their field.
MUSICAL PHENOMONA.......2006-07-25
This is probably among the most best band of today, or at LEAST lyrically, they are miles ahead of many musicians today, Standing is extremely emotive, beautiful, the lyrics are great throughout this whole CD, heck all the melody on this cd, along with his voice, is all outstanding, it's sad that this cd or Futureperfect isn't on the Rolling Stones 500 greatest cd's of all time, especailly considering some of the cd's they have on it that don't even compare with VNV
Awesome........2006-05-31
At some point in 2005, someone recommended that I give VNV Nation a listen and suggested that I find "Matter + Form" first. I agreed and was satisfactorily impressed, but I had the nagging feeling that there was something more to this group than what that album had let onto. I dug a little deeper and discovered "Empires," and rather than being mildly content with my find, I was blown away. "Empires" was everything I had wanted from an electronic music album but had previously been unable to find.
Basically, there are two types of songs on "Empires": one type is slow, soft, introspective, and comparatively rare; the other type is fast, hard, (still) introspective, and thankfully abundant. The interesting thing about "Empires" (and VNV Nation in general) is that while much of the music possesses obvious electronic pop sensibilities (familiar chord-progression patterns and common rhythms, for example) the music never becomes accessible enough to qualify as "pop." The song "Rubicon" is perhaps the perfect example of this; the song moves along at a galloping speed, has a catchy chorus, irresistable arpeggiated chords that bring to mind Tangerine Dream sped up to 180 BPM, and a set of lyrics that any songwriter should be jealous of. And despite all of these factors, the song, the album, the band are all too cerebral, too Apollonian, simply too above it all to appeal to most of the plebs who dance the night away to derivative electro in darkened rooms under chemical enhancement. The pulsating instrumental "Saviour" is the song that comes closest to being a rave hit, but still manages to impress upon the listener that there is more going on here than music designed to get one's body moving. Harsher tracks populate the second half of the album, reaching their climax with the angry, determined "Darkangel" and then falling into the abyss with the calm, contemplative "Arclight," which completes the circle of the album by lengthening and adding a vocal line to the instrumental "Firstlight" that began the album. This structuring is significant because the album is meant to portray the lifespan of a generic empire (although arguably one based almost entirely on Caesar's Rome). In this, the album suceeds admirably, as the excellent lyrics prove.
The only negative about "Empires" is the fifth track, "Fragments." It is atonal and dissonant, lacking any but the most superficial similarity to the far more sophisticated tracks on the album. It sounds not unlike several tracks on the band's follow-up "Futureperfect," but given the greatness of the other 9 tracks, a single misstep is easily forgivable. Being one of my top 5 favorite albums from any genre, "Empires" is highly recommended to anyone who appreciates electronic music that is more than a catchy beat.

I enjoyed listening to the songs on this CD - it was like old school met new technology. The remixes are fun that made me want to get up and boogie!
Crisp, Clean Sound From The Original Master Tapes!.......2007-01-09
Woah! These recordings sound brilliant!!! It's amazing how well recordings from 1981 can sound! Take the classic "Genius Of Love" by the Tom Tom Club. Yes, this is the track that Mariah Carey sampled for her 1995 hit "Fantasy". The original "Genius" track was more prominent in Sean Combs' "Bad Boy" mixes of the single. Here we get the original "Genius" track not only in it's original long version but in it's best sound quality ever. It's amazing to say that little difference can be heard between the Mariah "Bad Boy" track and this one. The bass line is just as heavy as the 1995 remix... and "Genius" was recorded in 1981! This is of course due to the wonderful work from the original masters by Hi-Bias using the wonderful 'Aural Submission' process.
Chaka Kahn's "I Feel For You" is presented in it's 12" remix! Those punchy drums sound like a wall of sound coming at you. It's incredible! Is this really from 1984? Amazing. Then we have the wonderful underlying bass from LeVert's smash "Casanova" that follows. And the sonic improvements continue... It's "pure energy"!
Yaz's "Situation" has sounded excellent on a number of previous releases, yet it hasn't sounded as good as it does here. The classic, yet over-used, track makes an appearance here in it's best sound yet! That bass line has never roared louder! It's hard to believe that the original tapes sound this good! The same goes for all of these tracks!
Highly recommended in addition to other releases from Hi-Bias! Check out the other volumes of 'Old School Nation' and the 'Retro:Active' releases for more excellent sound and 12" classics!
Great Buncha Songs.......2006-11-06
Everyone just LOVES every song on this set. At parties, no one gets tired of these hits. Good for housework too; if you can stop dancing.
A MUST HAVE..........2006-01-04
Classic 80's cuts that have been sampled and resampled "ump-teen" times (hey if it works, why change?).
Song titles alone don't justify purchasing this set. It's the long extended mixes...the extended intros...extended breakdowns...that make this a MUST HAVE!!
I own all of these originals on mint 12" singles, with about a 1/3 on cd. Again, highly recommended.
If you're a "non-demanding" listener of 80's tracks, and the 3 or 4 minunte radio mix "rocks"...then this will either be overkill (track too long) or..."da baum!" (hey, I haven't this part before!!)
Warning...if a cd offers 20 old school hits, that spells R-A-D-I-O mix (short and simple). Back in the day, 5 mins was the miniumum length for a track.

Classic dance mixes from 1980's and the 1990's........2004-06-17
Holy crap- why can't the US release cds like these. This collection comes from the Canadian label Hi Bias and is a collection of 2 cds of classic dance mixes. There are longer mixes for the Nancy Martinez and Nu Shooz mixes but I really bought this cd for the mixes of Club Nouveau ,Levert and The Time and I will admit to liking the JJ Fad track when it was originally out. The songs are mostly from the Warner/Atlantic labels and maybe next time a cd like this is released try and get other labels involved- but that is just a thought. Here is a track listing for the cds:
Disc 1
1- Deee-Lite- Groove Is In The Heart (Meeting Of The Minds Mix) 5:10- number one for 3 weeks in 1990.
2- Tom Tom Club- Genius Of Love (Original Vocal Version)7:26- a huge Black and Dance single in 1981/82 where it was a number one club track. Most remember it from Mariah Carey,
3- Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force- Planet Rock( Original Vocal Version)6:24- a hugely influental rap record that samples Kraftwerk- hit number 3 on the Club Charts and was produced by Arthur Baker. On Tommy Boy!!!!!

5- Levert- Casanova(Vocal Extended Mix) 6:11- a number one black and dance sales record in 1987. Only got to 27 on the club chart.
6- Sweet Sensation- Hooked On You (Long Play Version)5:09- never hit the club chart but was a top 30 pop and black record. It was put out on Next Plateau in 1986 and then again in 1988 on Atco. Great freestyle song. Sweet memories of this track.
7- Starpoint- Object Of My Desire(12" Version) 5:43- hit number 12 club in 1985 and was their only pop hit.
8- Digital Underground- The Humpty Dance (Bonus Hump Mix)4:39- a number 20 club track in 1990 and early 2 Pac as well. Huge black and pop song.
9- Nancy Martinez- For Tonight (Club Mix)4:57- number 2 for 2 weeks on the club chart in 1986 and a huge sales record as well. FREESTYLE!!!!!
10- Debbie Gibson- Only In My Dreams(Extended Club Mix)6:31- the number one club sales track of 1987 although it only went to number 4 on that chart. Reached number 12 club play and top 5 pop.
11- Chic- Good Times(Disco Mix)8:13- from 1979 and was the basis for Queen and SugarHill Gang- only for God knows what reason hit number 3(I don't get that) on the Disco charts in 1979.
12- Information Society- What's On Your Mind (Pure Enegry) (Club Mix) 8:00- number one for 2 weeks in 1988 and a huge sales and pop track as well.
Disc 2
1- Yaz- Situation (12" Club Mix)5:44- original version was a number one track in 1982 for 4 weeks- put out again in 1991 only getting to 46 and again in 1999 where it was a number one track for 3 weeks again. Alison Moyet at her most dance.
2- Company B- Fascinated(Club Mix) 7:29- number one club and sales for 4 weeks in 1987/88. Major early house/freestyle track from producer Ish.
3- Patrice Rushen- Forget Me Nots (12" Version) 7:17- number 2 for 3 weeks in 1982 on the club charts- was her biggest pop track and most will remember from Men In Black.
4- Sheila E- The Glamourous Life(Club Mix Edit) 6:20- a longer mix on the full cd. A huge number one in 1984(2 weeks) and her biggest pop hit as well. Prince produced.
5- Club Nouveau- Lean On Me(Remix)6:34- number one club play and sales chart, pop and black in 1987.
6- JJ Fad- Supersonic (Vocal Remix)6:44 - a number one dance sales track and a number 10 club play track in 1988- Female rappers made fun of by Missy Elliott in Gossip Folks track.

8- The Time- Jungle Love (12" Mix) 5:28- a number 9 club track in 1984 and part of the Purple Rain movie. Awesome song still.
9- Zapp- More Bounce To The Ounce (Extended Version)5:50- a number 19 club hit from 1980- from the late Roger Troutman.
10- Nice & Wild- Diamond Girl(Vocal Disco Version)5:49- like the Sweet Sensation track- a fond memory. From 1986 a number 20 club track.
11- Nu Shooz- I Can't Wait (Vocal American Mix) 4:51- a huge number one sales and club track in 1986 (number one club for 2 weeks). Also a top five pop and black hit as well.
12- Planet Patrol- Play At Your Own Risk (Vocal Mix) 7:46- another Arthur Baker production- a number 10 club hit from 1982.
A great collection of original and unmixed hits from the past. A++++++++++++++ collection.Buy!

this was one of the best house cd's i got i still listen to this cd even in 2003. it has fast breaks good cuts and a all around dance cd alot new dj's should use this cd as reference point. you really don't see house cd's quite like this one anymore it is a classic and it had the right timing when the rave scene was just hitting hits peak.

Digitally Remastered From The Original Master Tapes!.......2007-01-09
Like all other Hi-Bias releases this one shines when it comes to the mastering! Just like the 'Retro:Active' releases from Hi-Bias the liner notes state that the music has been "mastered using the 'Aural Submission' process. Any audio imperfections are due to original source masters". The results? Stunning!!! I can't believe how incredible some of these recordings sound, namely the early 80's tracks: "Let It Whip" by The Dazz Band (1982) sounds incredible with it's heavy bass line and full dynamic range. Of course, this track is only one example.
Soft Cell's 12" of "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" has never sounded better than on this release. This 12" is readily available on numerous compilations all over the world. I have never heard it sound better than on here! It's incredibly rich, crisp, and heavy sounding for a 1981 recording! It really puts the 2002 Mercury/Universal 'Non-Stop Erotic Caberet' so-called "remaster" to shame! Sorry, but that master sounded flat and thin! It's a real treat finally having an older recording like this in my collection with it's best sound ever.
As one reviewer pointed out the 2-CD set does have it's faults. While the majority of the tracks are the original 12" versions a few LP tracks have found their way here. For example, Bronski Beat's 1984 smash "Smalltown Boy" features in it's original LP version, not the official 12" mix that's listed. The original 12" clocks in over 9 minutes. It clocks in at it's standard 5:01 LP version here. It's really a shame that this was overlooked because I was looking forward to finally having the real 12" version in stunning audio. Nonetheless, this does not disappoint! This is easily the best-sounding version I've heard of the track.
Many of these tracks really don't show their age in terms of sound quality due to the brilliant mastering. I have never heard any of these tracks sound better on any previous releases I own. I highly recommend this release in addition to the other 'Old School Nation' volumes for fans looking for the best-sounding 12" versions out there!

keep an eye on hi-bias compilations--flawless........2005-04-01
I wish Hi Bias would release MORE compilations MORE often. From this series (volume 2 is coming out) to Retro Active (new wave classics) and Old School Jams, these are 2 disc sets, NON-beat mixed with FULL LENGTH 12" versions of the songs, many of which are out of print or which were never released on CD to begin with. Awesome.
