Customer Reviews:
A true, enduring masterpiece!.......2005-09-01
There have been many milestones in film music history that have resonated through the decades finding new audiences and inspiring new recordings.
Unique among them is "The Egyptian," a major collaboration between uber-composers Bernard Herrmann (to whom the film was assigned) and Alfred Newman (20th Century-Fox Music Department head and all-time great composer/conductor). While Herrmann got the initial assignment, the allotted time was inadequate for him to do justice to the film. Newman stepped in and developed thematic materials which Herrmann incorporated into his own desginated sections of the film, while Newman the rest.
In my opinion, "The Egyptian" -- as a film -- stands well above most epics of the 50s, but it has some serious detractors who, for whatever reasons, find no value in the authentic atmosphere, fantastic sets, stunning cinematography and brilliant music underscoring. Add to that some solid performances from Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding (plus a stolid, if uninvolving leading performance by Edmund Purdom) and you really get a stunning piece of entertainment that holds the attention, dazzles the eyes and ears and becomes emotionally involving. Wilding, as the pharaoh, has the film's -- and one of filmdom's -- best moments near the end of the film. Newman's underscoring for that scene -- called "Death of Akhnaton" -- is an example of what film scoring is all about. It also heightens awareness of what seems to be missing from many of today's film composers resumes -- intensive education in music theory, counterpoint, harmony and exposure to all forms of music. The scene is breathtaking, heartbreakingly performed and musically overwhelming, although the music is always "under" the scene rather than rampaging over it.
There are so many wonderful pieces of music in this film that I acknowledge my inadequacy to present a case for them. The proof is in the listening. From the awe-inspiring opening to the exquisite theme for "Merit" to the sinuous, hypnotic theme for "Nefer", Herrmann and Newman have created a musical palette of stunning splendors. There is no other soundtrack album like it.
I cannot overstate its importance, the splendiferousness of its performance on this recording by the 20th Century-Fox Studio Orchestra as conducted by Alfred Newman, and the glorious choral work of Newman's right-hand man, Ken Darby.
This is film music history. Any collection without it is hollow.

Album Description
The Orange Mountain Music release "Music 4 Hands" is a collection of new recordings on dual pianos performed by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. The compositions are "Six Scenes from Les Enfants Terribles" for two pianos based on the original opera by Philip Glass as well as a Steve Reich's "Piano Phase". "Music 4 Hands" debuts these new arrangements by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa.
Philip and Steve Reich were leaders of a new music revolution in New York City in the 1960´s and 70´s that included Terry Riley, Lamonte Young, and Meredith Monk. In the years since then their careers and music have greatly diverged, and it is rewarding to find a new record that celebrates them both.
Maki Namekawa is one of the young musicians who is introducing new works into the mainstream of German concert activity. As a soloist and a chamber musician equally at home in classical music and contemporary repertoire, Ms. Namekawa appears regularly at major concert venues in Japan and Europe.
Dennis Russell Davies is the chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Landestheater Linz, as well as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. His range of activities include conductor, pianist, and chamber musician. All Davies' talents are characterized by a very broad repertoire ranging from Baroque to very modern, all with an intense commitment to the composers of our time.
Customer Reviews:
ADORE IT!.......2006-04-23
I LOVE the opera recording, so I was afraid that the 2 piano arrangement might be a little too sparse...but I ADORE this version. All the inner voices of Glass' music are brought out and in the end, just like with the opera, I am very moved. Glass is a Romatic at heart, and this version like the opera recording shows it. .
Another Great CD.......2006-02-02
I disagree with the previous reviewers comments in that there are NO STRINGS on this CD.
It features two seminal works by two important composers of our day: Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
This recording of Reich's Piano Phase is poignant! The performances are flawless and the recording is wonderful.
The transcription of a suite of instrumental music from Glass' LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES is wonderful. Davies and Namekawa, the pianists, have made an effective transcription of the original 3 piano-part Glass opera, to 2 piano/4 hand instrumental suite.
It's really wonderful, especially the Sleepwalking music.
Just FANTASTIC!
Glass on piano is always good.......2005-11-28
If you like Philip Glass and the sound of pure piano then this recording is worth listening to - its that simple. Davies is a well known conductor and pianist in most classical music circles, and he plays with the central pianist in his own orchestra - so they both understand each other very well.
This makes the dual piano approach work out in the end, and Reichs piano phase gets the treatment it demands and frankly deserves.

Intense and dramatic.......2006-02-01
The Alaska 12 Expeditions is so far the last Death & Take$ album, put together after original band member and creator Tom Shannon's death from cancer in 2002. Some of the songs do feature Shannon's unique bass playing, but those he was unable to put on tape were handled by a vast array of guest musicians that his band mate Vince Martinez found and integrated into the music. Martinez also co-wrote most of the material here, some from scratch, and helped finish arrangements too.
First of all, this album is a great act of love and respect in musical form, dedicated to the memory of Thomas Patrick Shannon. What's even more meaningful is that the sales of the album will be used in support of the worthy cause of cancer research and funds will go to UCLA's Jonsson's Cancer Research Center. This is worth the price of the album alone, but amazingly, the CD is also full of songs that are carefully written, recorded and arranged. From simple acoustic guitars and bass arpeggios that define "The War Against Metal Atrophy" to the engaging guitar work on the detailed "Misunderstanding A Little Less Completely", The Alaska 12 Expeditions is an interesting piece of work. Textured guitar harmonies float above the compositions before giving way to creepy, silent passages where a cold mix of bass, keys and sparse cymbals can be heard. The atmosphere is ethereal, drums roll wildly, while the vocals lament the loss of a loved one, even if the title was inspired by C.S. Lewis' book titled A Grief Observed. Side by side with the dramatic pieces are catchier and more direct tracks such as "Revolver", a song with an excellent arrangement, beautiful synths, acoustic guitars, and a terrific interpretation from George Radai who does Tom Shannon's original bass arrangement justice. "The Suffer Ring" is another interesting song, as it seems like it consists of two totally separate songs merged into the framework of one. It begins with nifty chord changes on the guitar and concludes with a depressive, almost grungy (especially considering the vocals at the end) form. I quite enjoyed this song.
"Snail" is just some drum and bass arrangement that lasts less than a minute and segues into the lengthy instrumental "Death: Theory", a title Vince Martinez came up. Apparently, Tom Shannon also used to jam with this free-style improvers called Bag: Theory, and when he passed away, Martinez asked the guys to come over and jam this amazing blues-inflected track out. With a distinct southern flair, where country meets bluegrass, this is the band's take on various genres, utilising harmonica, saxophone, conga, and impressive finger-picked bass lines. The guitar work is searing throughout. Given the atmosphere in the studio when this song was put down on tape, the track becomes all the more emotional in its impact.
Death and Taxe$ is impossible to categorise musically. There is a lot of prog rock going on here, but it's equally jazz and blues friendly. By the way, the Chapman stick playing is awesome too. I heard Vince Martinez has already started work on the follow-up to this album, hopefully out some time in 2006. I'll be on the lookout, so should you.

Album Description

Customer Reviews:
Brutal, intense, awesome...........2003-01-19
Underground was originally self-released by Brutal Mastication, however, was not promoted very heavily and thus only made a minor splash in the death metal world. In late 2002, Brutal Mastication signed with Hook n Mouth Records to release a new CD, that is scheduled for release in early 2003, and Hook n Mouth Records also decided to re-release Underground with the promotion that it deserves.
Underground is half-live, and half-studio, with the live portion having tremendous production quality, better than most studio recordings. Also, the tightness of the band is very impressive for the live tracks.
Overall, Brutal Mastication would have to be classified as old-school death metal, but you can hear some hardcore punk influences, especially in the bass riffs, and some guitar riffing as well. The vocals are definitely death metal, and are a cross between Obituary and GWAR. The drumming is awesome, crisp, and intricate.
Most of Brutal Mastication's music is a combination of mega-fast blast beats, and powerful mid-paced brutality. All of the songs are well written, feature many pace and riff changes, and always hold your interest. Brutal Mastication, while definitely death metal, is unique in that their music if very intricate and distinguishable. They never get sludgy and boring as a lot of death metal can. They are always changing things up and keeping things interesting. I can't wait for their upcoming release in early 2003.
