There's a rule in commercial pop: don't bite the hand that feeds you. Translation? If you're getting love on TRL, it's best leaving well enough alone and tinkering only slightly with the sound that pays your bills. So you have to give Pink a whole heap of credit. The Philly-raised songbird may have made her rep with infectious and rugged pop-R&B hits like "There You Go" and the remake of "Lady Marmalade," but like the fuchsia coif she once sported, that sound is gone. In its place is a more driving alt-rock attack, liberally laced with some late-night blues and heartfelt lyrics that, while they sometimes come off like diary entries (the simplistic bon mot "Your pain is painful" in "Family Portrait"), are clearly Pink's thoughts, as opposed to words someone put in her mouth. Helping Pink express her inner Alanis are Dallas Austin, who produced the insistent rocker "18 Wheeler," and former 4 Non Blonde Linda Perry, who Pink has resurrected from one-hit-wonder status. Mixing up thumping beats, ("Get the Party Started"), with folksy confessionals, Pink's potent vocals and her honest determination make this a risk worth hearing. --Amy Linden

I LOVE Pink!! The first album I bought was the latest one - "I'm Not Dead", and I love it. So I decided to investigate her earlier work. While I am glad I have "Missundaztood", I didn't find it as compelling as her latest work. Good to see where she has come from though.

Not only is Pink an amazing singer, but her lyrics are soo deep and personal. I love people who write about the sad times because a lot of people needs to hear something they can relate to. Family Potrait speaks to a lot of people, including my brother, who overhead the song and keeps requesting me to replay track 7. The whole album is a work of art so it's hard to choose, but if I had to choose, my favorites are Don't let me get me, Just Like a Pill, Family Potrait and Lonely Girl. Pink's voice is soo raw and real that you can actually feel the pain in her voice. Once you listen to this album, you will want hear more. So I will go ahead and let you know that her third album is Try This and her fourth, which is her best thus far is "I'm Not Dead". So please give this album a chance. Pink is a real artist and she will be around for a long time because she is true to herself.

out of the gate and running hard.......2007-03-26

This is Pink's first album to my knowledge. It has some raw studio tape footage that is cute and rough. I loved it. The segments give a good hint of what this ballsy little girl is about, and a preview of the bold, strong woman she became. She has fun with this release and you get to hear it. It is cool to listen to the inside track banter between Pink and the recording engineer. She is a force to be reckoned with; and a sweet lady all in one.

I kind of like this CD. I don't listen to it as much anymore for some reason, but I think I'm overdue to listen to it again. One of my favorite songs on this album is "respect" which talks about how girls should act around guys and how they should not let boys push them around any time the boy thinks it's convenient for them "no freebies in the limosouine that's not what it's about. let 'em know just what to do give it up he won't call you respect is just a minimum, go on girl and get you some" Another song about not letting men push girls around that I really like is "can't get me down". Which talks about getting ready to face the day and anything that might come one's way. I love encouraging songs like that... they really help you face your problems in life. I don't like to many of the songs on here because of the swearing content but I do listen to "Mizundastood" constantly. She only says one swear word in the song but I don't mind. Otherwise I avoid songs on here that have swearing on them. I like this CD otherwise... but if you're under sixteen, I wouldn't recommend it because of the swearing. I forgot to add that another one of my favorite songs is "Don't Let Me Get Me".

The bad news is that there is no "Sour Times" to equal the first album's greatness. Lead single "Cowboys" doesn't do the trick, not with its '50s sci-fi dub vibe and the Yma Sumac stylings of Beth Gibbons. The upside is that this bold sophomore release is, even at this late date in trip-hop's evolution, still startling, thanks to the mix of Geoff Barrow's soundscapes and Gibbons's haunting wail. --Jeff Bateman

For the sole reason that this album far transcends the poppy undertones of Dummy, I give it a 5/5.

That being said, I'd still like to give a track-by-track review of this product.

SHORTEST TRACK: Half Day Closing (also one of the best)
LONGEST TRACK: Humming (another favorite of mine)

Cowboys: You can't help but feel the eerie opening to this album pulsate in your mind as the first kick drum hits grace your eardrums. Beth sings in a screeching tone of voice, almost scornful, giving this song an intensity unmatched by previous songs. My only gripe is that it loses its bass after those initial drumstrikes. 9/10

All Mine: An enjoyably simple bump, its lyrics are hard-hitting and possessive (Tethered and tied/there's nowhere to hide from me). 9/10

Undenied: Starts with a moody 55-second instrumental (I love it!), then Beth's lyrics come in as a contrast to the last song (this one is about losing love rather than keeping love close). 10/10

Half Day Closing: The confusing beat and heavy distortion on the instruments and lyrics (at one point, Beth's voice sounds like a distorted guitar!) make this one quite dark and heavy. The lyrics are about the changing times, and how innocence has been lost. 10/10

Over: Starts off with a creepy acoustic guitar, then builds into a strange ballad with heavy drums that burst with string hits. The lyrics match the atmosphere; they are equally creepy. 9/10

Humming: My favorite on the album (and luckily, the longest!) It starts off with a cliché UFO-style humming (hence the title) accompanied by what sounds like reversed strings, then the beat blasts in at 1:30 with lyrics that seem to be about sex. 10.5/10!

Mourning Air: Soft and sad, this song is about holding on tight to love, at risk of slipping into depression. A pretty amazing track. 9.5/10

Seven Months: I don't like this one as much as the others, but it still packs a punch. The scornful lyrics accompany its beat well. 9/10

Only You: The most credited samples lie in this track, but are not too noticeable, as samples are in other tracks. The lyrics are stunning, and Beth sings them with passion. 10/10

Elysium: The name of the track means "paradise," but the lyrics are about hate and self-hate, which makes for another one of those title-lyric contrasts that can make or break an album. This one makes it! 9.5/10

Western Eyes: This song is the most friendly on the album, but certainly still darker than those on Dummy. The sample at the end goes well with the beat, but it should have been placed elsewhere in the song, IMO. 10/10

Final verdict: 10/10

I had seen two music videos for this CD and thought it was going to be great. After listening to all the tracks, I only liked maybe three. I am a heavy trip-hop and acid jazz fan, but this was just psychidelic junk. It was like a whiny, down-beat version of aphex twin. I guess, if thats your thing... buy it NOW!

very impressive sophomore release.......2007-03-22

Portishead's second release comes as a surprise. my first listen to it i felt rather disappointed. beth gibbons' voice was distorted almost the whole time and a much more twisted use of sampling and scratching going on. during my initial listen i was running short on time and could only sample bits of the songs. i guess that is why my disappointment came through. "Dummy" is very much a singles based album that can fulfill the effect it desires through quick listenings. i still love the album and don't take that comment to be anything other than that. this second album is a collection of songs, it is meant to be listened to straight through. each song flows directly into another and gives a seamless tapestry and progression of the trip-hop sound. of course Barrow and crew give us a sampling of singles like "All Mine", "Humming" and "Only You", but seeing where these tracks fit in with the album makes these tunes seem all the more significant. after my first couple of listens (obviously with headphones on) i now "experience" this album rather than listen to it. when recommending portishead i still have to give the nod to "Dummy", but any avid fan of trip-hop needs to have this album in their collection. it makes you want more, but when.....

It was like listening to the very few parts of Dummy I didn't like for an entire CD. Way too much gratuitous scratching, and screechy vocals for may taste. Extremely disappointing.

It's now perhaps six months after I wrote the paragraph above and I am completely addicted to this album. Cinematic trip goth at its very very best

I feel so cold..........2006-04-13

There's nothing like Portishead and nothing like their 2nd album. Its darker, creepier, and more haunting than the first. The entire album has an overal similar sound which makes for a more themed and theatrical sonic experience. I like this better than the first album which had the obvious singles and dabblings in various spectrums of trip-hop which now resembles everyone from tricky to morcheeba. However on this 2nd release, Portishead holds their own, establishing their own trademarked sound: an eerie, slow-paced death-orchestra led by a sultry singer with a heart of black-gold. This music will get into your brain and eat away like bad acid. Exquisite production and smart use of turntables. From the intro of eerie high pitched twinklings over a heartbeat that lead into twangy strums of electric guitar and record scratching, to the last song which ends with the sampled vocals of an old bluesman pining about hookers and gin, this is a masterpiece recording. Goes well with a late-night martini and captures the dreary mood of a cool, misty morning in Autumn just after it has rained and the fog is still hanging in the air...

I don't like this album, it is extremely boring. I'm not holding it to comparison to anything prior by Amon Tobin. I don't like it because I found myself fast fowarding through parts in search for something more.

I wanted the grass to get greener and this was never the case. I also search for something in music that I might enjoy, or even a singular sound that I can sample and exploit.

This album failed to entertain me, or make me feel energized. Even with the hope of discovering some cool sounds it is a total let down.

I wonder if he played all those random instruments. The percussion sounds very natural, I would find it hard to believe they were all from a computer program, it would probably be easier to just record the drums and edit them afterwards. There's lots of stuff you miss listening to this the first few times around, lots of little details in the sound.
There's some symphony stuff going on as well, guitars too, chimes, synthesizers, vocals, pretty much everything... and none of it sounds familiar. Once all this settles in you have a very replayable CD.

When I first heard Amon Tobin I listened to Out From Out Where and then bought his others. They were all good, but this one stands out a little because the structures of the songs are pretty random, but they make sense somehow. I barely notice any repetition on Foley Room. If I listen to Permutation or Bricolage it is very noticable by comparison.

Electronic music is a genre with a lot of sub-genres and is expanding all the time. It's difficult because like computers themselves, electronic music is always getting updated and you have to keep up with the times. However some people are continually able to bring something fresh that has a new sound. This is one of those cds that actually gets better the 4th or 5th time around.

Foley Room is an industrial breakbeat / drum-n-bass symphony. Amon Tobin not only improves but he vastly raises the bar every single time he releases an album. You know this is the man who made Out from Outwhere and Permutation right away but what you cannot prepare for is the epic nature in which he rings in 2007 with music that is 2307.

I have a deep love for the album format and 'Foley Room' further defines this affection. It allows for structure and limitations to encourage discipline and creativity. The music here is like the intensity of a beautifully emotional 500 lb. beast trapped within a metal cage where he barely fits and has only one small air hole. He is angry and dents the structure while trying to free himself. He becomes hopeless realizing this is impossible. He ponders his life, becomes bitter and angry again. Somehow, we feel like he got himself into this.

Take that for what you will, but the only album I can compare this to is 'Endtroducing...' and that is a stretch because this is much more intense and the songs are mostly shorter in length (my only gripe because these songs could be of brilliantly epic length to match the mood). But the darkness and emotion is evident and delves deeper into actual human psyche than I'd say nearly ALL of, at least, electronic music.

Amon Tobin has officially been ordained into the vanguard of music's elite.

Sophisticated Artistry in Electronica Pur.......2007-04-17

Having been a fan of the Art of Noise in the 80's, it is a very high bar that reaches my ears these days, and Amon Tobin has done it. His incidental style, combined with crafty rhythms and a high degree of acoustic precision create something between acid jazz and techno, a very listenable, wordless play on the human spirit.

A True New Wave Genius.......2007-06-19

"The Pleasure Principle" is the album that contains Gary Numan's biggest chart hit, "Cars". And "Cars" is the only commercial-radio-friendly song on the album. The other tracks, however, are works of pure genius, especially "M.E.", "Engineers", and the masterpiece "Tracks". "Tracks" might be the best two minute song I have ever heard.

Numan is only now being credited for his work practically inventing the entire New Wave movement, and this album certainly stands the test of time as one the classics of the genre. Order it without hesitation, slip on your headphones, and prepare for a real listening treat.

Someone once asked me what my favorite album of all time is. That is of course a very difficult question to answer. But I'll have to choose Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle because it is the only album of which I've been in continuous possession of for the past 25 years; first as a cassette and then a CD. I can't say that of any other album and I've listened to hundreds. If you like this record then go get Replicas and Telekon. If you like those two then try out I, Assassin.

We're so exposed..........2007-03-30

Numan's sole association for some is still his 1979 hit Cars. It's a shame, because the album it hails from is an excellent record and holds up remarkably well all these years later.

This is a notable rock achievement---a rock album with no guitars. The synthesizers (Minimoog and Polymoog) are put through some guitar pedals and create some big, fat, fuzzy sounds that are pitched, distorted, swished, whatever. The bass and drums are `real', and Numan continues the sci-fi-robot-future-Phillip K Dick-inspired rock. As on Replicas, the hooks seem effortless.

There are a number of Numan classis in addition to Cars, some of them still regularly performed live. Films, for instance, is a funky, menacing number. Metal is a live staple, covered and remixed numerous times and still working. Conversation is another rambling, robot-inspired number with a long synth breakdown at the end, similar to Cars. M.E. is another dark and menacing number, now well-known for the Basement Jaxx use of the sample riff.

Many folks now acknowledge this as an important, influential album, yet Numan remains cult (if at all in the US). The Pleasure Principle is cohesive, the sound has aged incredibly well, and it's ahead of it's time for 1979--not bad for a kid. The remastered and reissued Beggar's Banquet discs are all excellent. The b-sides (three of them) are atmospheric and completely in line with the mood of the album--kind of dark, mechanical, but effortlessly catchy. The live tracks (four) are of excellent quality and come from the Living Ornaments series of live albums (also highly recommended). With a `distant' sound, warm synths, and dark lyrics, Numan was in his own world.

A True Gem.......2007-03-08

The Pleasure Principle, the 1979 New Wave outing from synthpop pioneer Gary Numan is a very enjoyable affair. This is almost-pure (Numan adds electric viola, bass, and acoustic drums to his huge Minimoog sound) cold and melodic synthpop that sounds both modern and dated.
Highlights include the songs "Metal", "Films", "ME", "Observer", and the perennial New Wave favorite "Cars". The sound is excellent and this reissue from the fine UK indie label Beggar's Banquet contains extensive liner notes and photos. Ah...that Minimoog sound!

Another Album That Changed Pop Music........2007-02-19

There were many synth pioneers before Gary Numan: Brian Eno, Wendy Carlos, Pierre Boulez and John Cage among others.

Numan's contemporaries like Ultravox never had a hit in the same stratosphere as "Cars".

What makes The Pleasure Principle so crucial, so pivotal in Pop music was that through "Cars", Gary Numan was able to introduce the mainstream audience to synthesizers better than anyone before him. "Cars" brought them to The Pleasure Principle, and The Pleasure Principle introduced them to synthesizers.

David Bowie's Berlin trilogy of Heroes, Low and Lodger(which included Brian Eno playing on much of them) preceded Numan , but they were more ambient(Heroes and Low) and eclectic(Lodger). Hits like "Heroes" had prominent guitars.

The Pleasure Principle has zero guitars.
It does however have Viola.
And Billy Currie of Ultravox also played Violin on a couple of tracks.

No guitars, mostly synth, some violin and viola.

Does that sound like a hit record?

My favorite track is still "Airlane." It is a simple and beautiful piece that opens the album perfectly.

The single Cars was heavy in synths, (even used synth drums) and yet followed a more pop sensibility.

It's not going to have the complexity of a great Philip Glass work or a Brian Eno album.
And that's the point. The Pleasure Principle was an electronic record that showed a whole new audience how beautiful a synthesizer can sound.

A lot of Electronic bands owe a bit of appreciation to the legacy and influence this album left -including Evening Ocean.

The Pleasure Principle is a classic CD that is still amazing today.

Highly recommended.

Anyone who caught Mocean Worker's previous release, Home Movies from the Brainforest, will no doubt be more than willing to take part in this action-packed sonic adventure teeming with impenetrable rhythms, mesmerizing loops, and out-of-the-blue musical scene changes. Adam Dorn does more than build some of the grooviest drum & bass into a blatantly jazz-era soundscape; the New York based artist pushes analog and digital-powered synths into the mix, along with some highly effective and masterfully understated samples. Midway into "Detonator," the second track on this his debut release on the Palm Pictures label, Dorn decides to throw a hyperspeed big-band section into a groove dominated by a controlling monotone. Equally unexpected, but from the other end of the spectrum, is a plaintive line that effectively halts the progress of a highly percussive and strings-laden song. The delightfully resonant "Boba Fett" closes out this much-anticipated work. --Paul Clark

I generally don't like drum and bass. In fact this is one of the few CD's of the few dozen or so I `ve tried that I like. MW generally doesn't program his drums too fast or dark, and unlike what I've heard (as a d'n'b newbie) the beats blend into the tracks well. It doesn't sound like programmed beats with melodies or instruments added afterwards. What I find especially compelling is his use of jazz, blues, piano, and old samples as the basis to his music. It contrasts well without fighting the percussion. Considering that, it gets a 4 star recommendation.

It starts well with the dark, melancholy "Rene M," and then goes to "Detonator," the cut he made a music video for. "Detonator" starts off as typical d'n'b (distorted drums and snaky baseline,), then kicks into this 60's chase scene horn-frenzy about two minutes in to cool effect. Track 3 "Jello Dart" is pretty good,. "Counts, Dukes & Strays" follows and is excellent, using concise, sparse jazz samples to a laid back hipster beat. "Mycroft," track 5, is the first track I don't like- that squiggly, deep baseline sound of d'n'b is grating, and this has it. "Heaven" is blues to a beat that made Beastie Boys' Check Your Head come to mind. "Motion Booty" despite its title is really a companion piece to "Rene M," and "Times of Danger" brings back the same car chase vibe s "Detonator." The last track is pretty bad, but at least this is the place to put it.

There you have it, 8 of 10 are good, it's got 4-5 strong hits, and it's one of the drum and bass CDs I like enough to keep. One last note, the packaging is first rate and classy; it's nice to see an artist who takes pride in these little details.

For months now, I've regarded Adam F's "Colours" as the best blend of D&B, Jungle, R&B, Jazz, and Trance. Finally, there's another contender. Buy this disc - and if you've never heard Adam F, get that too. Mocean Worker ranks even (and sometimes over) anything by Metalheadz. I'm a fan.. and can't wait to see what comes next from this brilliant artist.

Its a little over the top in parts for me, but there's no denying that Dorn knows what he's about. It is not as experimental as the likes of Autechre, Richard James/Aphex, and it isn't as slyly funky as Amon Tobin's stuff or the recent Funki Porcini, but Dorn gets quite a psychedelic groove going. Dorn also is pretty imaginative in his rythmic use and placement of samples. He hasn't quite ascended Mt. Olympus yet, but he's getting real close. Recommended.

Talk about inspired (or inspiring). This man is definitely in touch with the stuff dreams are made of, and continues to improve on his masterful skills following his first release "Home Movies from the Brainforest." This latest stuff will take you out of your hum-drum here and now, to a bass-and-drum realm of deeeelicious grooves. My sincerest thanks go out to Mocean Worker for a very moving new work of art.

Not one to contently bask in the glow of her burning fame in the early 1990's, Mariah Carey grabbed her lunch pail and quickly churned out a very enjoyable follow-up to her debut smash 'Mariah Carey'. With the enormous success of her first CD, it was an intimidating act for any artist to follow it up. But she succeeds admirably with 'Emotions'.

It shows Mariah was no fluke, displaying notes and pitch-perfect vocals that even today very few female singers can match. But not all the songs are keepers. I usually play only the first 5 songs and skip the last 5. My favorite is still 'Make It Happen'. The power and range Mariah displays on this track is remarkable. She pierces the heavens with her high notes and enormous lung power. I think Mariah really sings this song like she means it because she's writing the song from personal experience to not give up on her dreams of 'Making It'.

I think Tommy Mottola used 'Emotions' as a follow-up CD to spotlight Mariah's voice more so than the songs themselves. You can hear every part of Mariah's vocal range in the choice of songs on this CD. Obviously her upper range gets more of a workout on this CD than any other one in her entire Sony/Virgin/Island catalog. I think 'Emotions' was released as a vehicle to show her vocal chops and it succeeded in every way.

I wouldn't say the quality of songs is right up there compared with her debut CD or later ones (especially 'Daydreams'), but her vocal high register has never sounded better. Keep that tea kettle whistling, Mariah !

While never a mega-fan of Mariah's, I was bowled over by her voice, the fact that she wrote her own songs, and that she released another album full of strong material just a little over a year after her debut. Some folks would have suffered creative burnout, but Mariah was just getting started.

I bought a copy of her self-titled 1990 debut, but I never did get around to owning a copy of "Emotions" (something that's going to change very soon). I don't why because I remember "Emotions," "Can't Let Go" (which, as much as I roll my eyes over love songs, has one of the prettiest melodies I've ever heard with a love song), and "Make It Happen" getting constant radio airplay in 1991 - and I enjoyed those songs each and every time.

Her lyrics were poetic and struck a chord with the then-teenager me, and her sound, while pop, had strong soulful overtones. She helped continue breathing life into a stale music scene and that feeling still resonates with me a little over 15 years after its release.

It can't be said enough that "Emotions" is classic 90s, is a great addition to the CD collection, and is Mariah at the top of her game.

Mariah Carey Causes Emotions: 4-4½ stars.......2006-07-26

As Mariah Carey released her second album in 1991, an enormous pressure laid on her shoulders to follow up the success of her debut album. Despite the fact that sales of Emotions did not reach the same level as Mariah Carey, it still manage to do extremely well, selling over a whopping 10 million copies. Not bad for a sophomore album!

The title-track Emotions was released to audience as the lead single, providing listeners with a contagious pop beat. The song displays Mariah's high pitch notes and awesome background vocals which include Trez Lorenz and David Cole. And You Don't Remember is a superb ballad where Mariah's pleading voice belts out how her lover does not remember the love, they shared. The chorus is a delight to listen too - simply wonderful. My favourite song on the album is up next; the splendid Can't Let Go. It is no wonder that many consider it among Mariah's best ballads to date. Released as a single, the groovy Make It Happen got stuck at the no.2 position, I recall. However, the teasingly song is a wonderful treat. The overall message of the song: You should never give up, work hard and your dreams will come true in the end. If It's Over, a collaboration between Mariah and Carole King, has a taunt of a jazzy mood to it. Mariah Carey belts out the chorus powerfully. Once again, I prefer the Unplugged version - however, this is purely a matter of taste.

You're So Cold starts of with Mariah's praticing her vocal cords, functioning as a build-up to the actual song. The lyrics are a tad annoying, yet the song is still quite joyous. Albums tend to get weaker at the end, which is also the case with Emotions. To Be Around You, Till The End of Time and The Wind are likeable songs, however they do not hold up well against the rest of the album's excellent songs. The ballad-like So Blessed is another highlight of mine. The dreamy melody culminates with the more aggressive chorus especially the belting of the words ''You are my heart'' followed by the softer ''My everthing'''.

Emotions is one of Mariah Carey's best studio-albums, in my opinion. The combination of brilliant pop ballads and excellent up-tempo songs are clearly present on the album. If you are a big fan of Mariah's poppier songs or crafted pop songs in general, Emotions will surely be a safe bet. The only complaint I have with the album is that some of the material is a tad weak compared to the brilliant songs, which are to be found on Emotions; however, this is hardly abnormal. Emotions is a very solid effort and a better album than Mariah's debut.

Mariah Carey burst onto the music scene with her fantastic self-titled debut album, and followed it up with her second album "Emotions". Essentially "Emotions" is in the same mould as her first album - beautiful vocals, heartfelt lyrics and an emotional connection with every songs.
Standouts in this album include:
"Emotions" - a good dancing track that features Mariah's piercing vocals.
"Can't Let go" - a beautiful ballad. One of Mariah's best songs
"Make it Happen" - A description of Mariah's life prior to becoming a superstar. Very catchy and uplifting
"The wind" - Very last track of the album. Mournful, breathtaking vocals combined with Mariah's sombre voice. Truly Phenomenal
Emotions is a truly magnificent album, featuring a wonderful collection of songs, each one a true delight to listen to.

Different and Good!.......2007-03-12

This CD was recommended by a friend based upon bands that I listen to now (Metallica, NIN, Korn..). He said it was a little different but thought I'd like it. A great mix of alternative and metal. I truly liked the entire CD.

Exceeded my expectations.......2007-02-22

I'm relatively new to the industrial-ish scene and didn't know what to expect from this CD. I had heard "Switchback" and "The Last Firstborn" and *loved* them but I'm almost always cautious of other tracks that I haven't heard yet on albums I buy. To my pleasure I found out that my caution was unnecessary. I enjoy pretty much all of the tracks on this CD. My favorites remain as Switchback and The Last Firstborn but I discovered I really liked "Frozen." My recommendation? If you liked Switchback, The Last Firstborn, or "One Good Reason" (all of which you can hear on Pandora) then I feel you'll like this album.

Celldweller has gained alot of respect and fans since the release of this. With many of these songs heard in Movies, Video Games & Internet Radio and a MySpace page filled to the brim with loyal Klayton fans. The ironic part is this guy is from Michigan (where I happen to live) where Industrial & Techno are far from the main trend. Yet this One Man Army is easily one of the most idolized idependent artists in the state, If not the country.

The albums approach is a mix of several different genres. Alternative, CyberTek, Gothic, Industrial, Metal & Techno. They all combine into a well oiled machine creating some of the most original music i've ever heard. From gritty synthed out guitar riffs, to dark overtones with soft melodic vocals and everything in between.

Songs such as 'Tragedy' have lyrics easy to sing along with and fast paced music easy to dance to or even head bang to. Other songs such as 'Switchback' have a heavier Industrial Metal influence and even have Klayton singing in audible Growl/Yell form. Tracks with a darker grittier approach like 'Symbiont' have Cyber Goth written all over them and are a nice addition to the album.

Metal fans be cautious, This album really isn't all that heavy. I suggest checking out songs on MySpace before purchasing. Everyone else don't hesitate, This is a great and original album to add to your collection. Personal favorites include: Frozen - Tragedy - Symbiont - Afraid This Time.

4.5 Stars. Excellent album........2006-08-29

I was fortunate enough to get this disc a little while back, and I had no idea the version I acquired was a low bit rate, internet leak. So, about 2 months ago, I buy the album and never really do much with it, but yesterday I brought it into work and I was floored at the difference. Lesson learned: Buy your CD's, even if you get the "early" version. Or just wait for the final to drop.

Yes, Celldweller is not Circle of Dust. They aren't industrial. What we've got here is a tapestry of rock, house, drum n' bass, and industrial, and it's quite a project he has here. A lot of people criticize it because he uses clean vocals, catchy harmonies, and club beats. I praise the man for it, and I'll tell you why this album is amazing, and why it's pushing the envelope. (Hopefully the soon-to-appear sophomore disc will be the sonic powerhouse a lot of people have been saying it is). Also, I'm going to not compare it to Circle of Dust or Argyle Park, as this is a completely different beast.

First off, Celldweller is defintely catchy and poppy. There is no doubting this. Some of their songs, like the rap infused synthetic rocker Switchback, are high energy affairs that allow you to bob your head and sing along. However, the variety of song structures, the use of synths, heavily processed guitars, and throbbing programmed drum beats all come together to produce something that doesn't skimp on either the rock or techno side. This isn't electronica sprikled over numetal, ala Spineshank, and it defintely isn't techno with a bit of guitar filled in. This a perfectly balanced combination of the two creating something quite unique, good to the ears, and something you can dance to. Once the album progresses and you start hearing the acoustic bits, the catchy rock riffs, the vocoded female vocal leads, you'll start to understand: This isn't a faliure at industrial, it's an almagamtion of all the styles of music the man in charge (Klayton) enjoys.

The high points for me are without a doubt the 7 minute techno epic "The Last Firstborn", with its hypnotic house rhythms, amazingly well mixed guitar parts that don't overwhelm the general feeling but add immesurably to it, and the whispered/raspy spoken word/rap hybrid vocals. Add some cool guitar breakdowns and infintely creepy lyrics, and it's a 10/10. The other high point comes later in the album, the much shorter and more rock-styled Fadeaway. From the trip-hop intro, which quickly gets a dose of chugging riffage, to the soaring and amazingly catchy chorus, this song rocks your ears until it drops down into an unexpected acoustic break complete with erie synths switching between your ears and a solemn vocal performance.

I can't recommend this album enough to people who have an affinity for rock and an even passing interest in electronica and industrial rock (Front Line Assembly fans need not apply ;) ). Don't expect a mind-twisting, calculated insanity. This is not Aphex Twin with guitars. This is straight up 4/4 beats, a high range mix of vocals, simple rock guitars, enough hooks to hold down a hungry Oprah, and some of the best club sample work I've heard outside of rave dj's. If your idea of great music simply consists of how heavy it is, then you're better off somewhere else. If your benchmark of good industrial is Squarepusher or Aphex Twin (both of which I love, btw) and if your rock collection consists of Gorguts, Starkweather, or even to a lesser degree Trivium, this probably isn't the album for you.

However, if you can take some pop, some club beats, and a motherload of catchy rhythms, get this album. You will not regret it.

Unfortunately many music critics have a pre-occupation with "credibility" which is deemed as "any singer/band whose lead singers have a messianic complex, whose music is bland and barely listenable and has attempted suicide. It helps if the singer is noticeably drugged-up". If you are like me and like pop, techno and hard rock, you'll love Electric Six. E6 combine a bold fusion of disco and hard rock with a sexed-up singer who sounds like he's got four balls and they're all on fire.

I LOVE this album. Techno-dance-disco-metal-punk-parody-garage rock! This album, and this band, do it all and do it all amazingly well.

Dance Commander starts the CD with all the power and fury of... what else, a nuclear war! If this song doesn't capture you, then you have problems.

Electric Demons in Love, Naked Pictures, Danger High Voltage, She's White, I Invented the Night, Gay Bar, Improper Dancing, and Synthesizer are all OUTSTANDING tracks. I'm the Bomb is great too- the only song on here that is not brilliant is The Jam in my opinion. Once I put this album on I can't stop listening until it's all over- it's very captivating. Musically, it's pure genius.

Easily the best album of 2003 by a long shot.

The Cinematic Orchestra has always been a favorite of mine. Motion is an awesome work that's worth every cent. The music is cutting edge, intense and spiritual. These songs put me in a great mood every time I listen to it, and it stays in my cd player. Get it, the cd is fantastic!

Jazzed up break beats.......2006-08-15

This is a gem. Pure and simple.
The smokey lounge atmosphere of "Durian" introduces you to its quite melancholie of a jazz based ensemble and touches with varying intensity of downtempo, Bristol sound ("Channel 1 suite" loop a la Portishead), and nervous break beats with live like drumming. The trumpet has either sad distilled tones ("Durian") or is nervous ("Channel..."). Haunting female vocales have this far away feel ("Diabolus") or a stronger appeal, more demanding (N.Simone impression in "Durian"). The percussion is energetic (ride cymbal getting tougher as "Channel..." goes) or includes playful soft rim shots ("Ode to the Big Sea" with it's intro classic Brubeck style). "Diabolus" has a sustained background brass which creates an impression of questioning notes which is reinforced by the loop of the bass.
It's all skillfuly blended and is always sustained with an almost dangerous feel easily recognizable in underground modern day trip hop et al. But the gorgeous classic references of the edgy Blue note years makes it audible again and again just like the stubborn loops which create the texture of its density. The drawling voices are countered by dynamic and true to life drumming explosions. It will certainely satisfy curious ears and jazz amateurs who wish to extend their audio portfolio to other areas, especially for those broken in to hard bop and tolerant towards talented groups like Massive Attack or Skalpel. In all it's dreamy but challenging audio spiel...it has that quality of unexpectedly weaving the immediately agreable of warm jazz with the shamelessly rebelious of this modern day's electronic risk taking endeavours. It's a jazzed up version of break beats...or maybe the reverse.

in second place: motion is the best cinematic album.

Eclectic Jazzy Mambo !!.......2003-10-22

I was excited to learn that The Cinematic Orchestra had more albums other than "Motion". After reading the reviews, it seems this album was the lower on the totem pole, however, this album is excellent. It's jazzy, the rhythm grabs you, and it ties together perfectly with a electronic feel. This is an album for anyone who appriciates contemporary jazz. Every track is worth listening to, and it doesn't get old. I am very ambitious about purchasing thier other albums after hearing this one.

I bought this on a lark. I agree with one of the reviewers that described this as underground jazz in a smoky bar room. It fits! The vocalist really adds a mourning effect to the record. The ensemble plays are very good. If I were to voice any complaint, it would be that there is not enough solo-ing in it. It grows on you in a plesant way. I make a lot of tapes and these cuts are good mood transitioners. Dark, foreboarding and expressive. Great spin!
