Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars Ethnic musical loungy electronic work of genuis, this is.......2007-02-26

Very deep, musical journey. One of the best of my collection of electronic music compillations. Very beautiful, I cannot recommend this album enough. I've explored other titles by prem Joshua, but for some reason, they are totally different, and cannot compare to THIS CD. layers upon layers of sound and really chill, very COOL, ethnic, east indian melodies. What can i say, it's one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Dakini Lounge.......2005-08-13

Borrowing as much from UK pre-Beatles instrumental legends the Shadows as the reverb-drenched American surfmeisters of the '60s, Toronto's Shadowy Men are a tough act to duct-tape to the chair. These '90s guys keep squirming loose to add unexpected elements to their brew. Benny Goodman's "Swing, Swing, Swing" pops up in "I Know a Guy Named Larry." And "Bang Bang," the Sonny Bono tune, tellingly combines gypsy swagger and 007 intrigue with a rockabilly bridge. Like San Francisco's Mermen, this is kinda surf and kinda not. When the Shadowy Men play Brian Wilson's "In My Room," you can bet they've got a pail of water balanced over the door, just waiting for some sap to walk in. --Jud Cost

5 out of 5 stars Grab a beer and fire up the grill!.......2006-04-01

I've owned this CD for a couple of years and I don't listen to it much, but I played it a few days ago and I was immediately transported to a wooden deck by a house with a gas grill cooking burgers and I had a beer in my hand thinking about how good life it.

This kind of music just sets a kind of mood, and whatever that mood is depends on your imagination, but I'll bet you imagine something in the Summer that is fun or relaxing. I love this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Surf/Indie Rock.......2005-11-29

Along with Man or Astroman?, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet released several outstanding indie instrumental albums in the 1990s. This is their second and probably best one, and still sounds great almost 15 years later. Fans of this band should also check out 'Fresh Gasoline' by Phono-Comb.

5 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen, the legendary Shadowy Men!!!.......2003-12-27

Anyone who is a fan of great Instrumental surf, lounge, or "spy" music must pick this up. This album makes great background music to conduct your own secret covert spy missions to. The performances here are one of a kind!!! You owe it to yourself to check this one out!!

5 out of 5 stars A Whooping crazy happy spazzy Five Stars O' fun!.......1998-10-16

A very upbeat recording from a bunch of happenin' Canadians. A must have to add to your collections! An added bonus? Not many people know their groovy style so they are relitivly CHEEP! Also look for their (first?) one "Savvy Show Stoppers!" or try the Barenaked Ladies (Gordon) or Moxy Fruvous (Bargainville) for other upbeat canadian tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Chill music.......2006-03-19

I came across this CD at a music festival booth. I asked the vendor what would be good for massage, as I am a CMT. He popped The Dreaming into a CD and I listened for about 5 minutes before I was hooked.

Just about every one of the songs on the CD is amazing. An incredible mix of Middle Eastern rhythms, ethereal voices, and otherwordly ambience. People ask me all the time what I am playing when I use this CD for my massage sessions. I recently got a DJ friend into this music, and he's in the process of acquiring all 4 CDs by this duo.

My absolute favourite song is Dmaot Malach. When I listen to it with my boyfriend, it feels like we're a million miles away from the world.
We're major fans of Zero 7 and Sound Tribe Sector 9, and this CD is also with us on any trip or evening together.

5 out of 5 stars So Much More Than Expected.......2005-09-22

I had heard several tracks from this CD and was excited about receiving it, however, I was blown away by the fact that I LOVED EVERY TRACK on it. Not only from the point of view of a fan of fabulous music, but from the fact that I can use the music in the psychotherapeutic exercises I facilitate (Breathwork and tantra therapy). Every track is hugely evocative and transporting and the sequence of the tracks is perfect. Couldn't be happier about a music purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Subtle, melodic and definitely spiritual.......2005-02-22

One of our teacher at the yoga studio put this music during a class. Suddenly, everything was different, everything was flowing with grace and I would feel going deep into myself as the poses went.
But you don't need to practice yoga to like it. It's real music and the soul and the inspiration are there.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous album - one of my favorites.......2004-12-01

I found this CD in a yoga shop and bought it without knowing anything about it. it was one of the best purchases i made! The soft and melodic tracks, with sophisticated rhythms and beats underneath are perfect to play around the house, and especially when working. I'm a graphic designer, and we play this CD all the time in the studio. It really helps the creative flow...! And what's interesting is that i don't seem to be getting tired of it, i just keep discovering new layers and depth.
It's a wonderful CD, i highly recommend it.

Album Description

from The Dutch Progressive Rock Page, 2005, Volume 1:

...And of course I should address the album's only cover song and the one that gives it at least part of its name. I've always thought I Am the Walrus was one of the weirdest songs from any band or any era that I'd ever heard - but, if you share that opinion, you ain't heard nothin' till you play Chill Faction's version a few times. I'm usually deeply skeptical about Beatles covers, but I'm pretty sure I prefer Chill Faction's version of the song to the original, because it not only takes the weird lyrics and runs with them but also weirds up the music, taking the Beatles' plod and funkifying it, vocalist Larry Kirwan making the lyrics hug the beat almost as if his voice were another percussion instrument. In this version, the oddness of the song is almost scary.

But odd as it is, I Am the Walrus isn't the oddest song on this album. This was an inventive and quirky group in its own right, and you'll get a kick out of many of the lyrics. From Hostage of the Heart: "I call up the White House / But they won't reverse the charges / They don't accept phone calls / From unidentified hostages." And from 42nd Street, whose rhythm and overall ambience remind me a bit of ABC's Poison Arrow: "I wish I could be sentimental when I think of you / I should have known better than to love you / `Cause your plastic heart is melting from the heat / On forty, forty, forty-second street." These guys are having fun with the words as well as with the music...

5 out of 5 stars Urban Melancholy.......2004-12-11

Chill Faction-Eggman On The Deuce and Other Stories is a masterpiece of urban melancholy. It's timeless, gritty, surreal, gripping, energetic and engaging.Lucky for those of us nostalgic fans, they resurrected this collection of songs by the inimitable Chill Faction.Whose masterful performances lay bare a synergy that runs rampant through their musicianship. In a time when we need more intelligent music like this that evokes universal themes of desolation and longing. There are so many tracks that thread this albums life force. WHENEVER WERE TOGETHER and CHRISTMAS IN THE WHOREHOUSE, are just a few that are provocatively memorable. The entire album summons forth the lost days of bands that can create a dramatically light and dark tapestry of emotion. SWEET AND SOUR SADNESS has the dire sound of a post-modern "Summertime"Larry Kirwan's vocals thrust at your heart with his earnest tone that rings of self-preservation.Dave Conrad's bass guitar and Thomas Hamlin's drums are hypnotic. Fred Parcell's trombone style has an extraordinary uniqueness. And Mike Fazio's soundscapes induced by both his dream like guitar and synthesizers forge the sound together and drag you into a world of vast and vivid projection. Somewhere there is a film that is should use this entire album as it's guiding soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hi-art with a decidedly funky feel.......2004-11-12

Chill Faction spin deceptively complex psychedelic riffs and rhythms into eerie and shifting Kafka-esque dreamscapes. Some songs capture whimsy (Long Hot Summer) or bittersweet memories (Christmas In The Whorehouse), (Whenever We're Together) and others make you look over your shoulder to see who is lurking behind you (Hostage Of The Heart), (Nuclear Missiles), (42nd Street). All while never ever dropping the groove. You certainly can get exhausted by the sheer energy of this record. It never lets up. It begs you to get up and contort yourself. Try and sit still to Don't Fall In The Crack, Jack or Marilyn or Bride Of Jesus. You simply can't. Hostage of the heart is reason alone to listen to Eggman. Stunningly disturbing.

You can certainly dance to this record but you can also contemplate your future, or your past for that matter, probably at the same time. How many records do you have like this in your collection?

This band was an art band and even that moniker doesn't do them justice.

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening.......2004-11-12

This album was done in the mid 1980's and sounds more contemporary than the works of many of today's so-called "hipsters". Chill Faction was one of those groups far ahead of their time. The musicians are superb & have a sophistication not generally found in today's music. They seemed to have invented their own brand of music: literary, sophisticated, melodic, violent, wonderfully disturbing, bittersweet, complex, sinister. Unique. Not for the squeamish. This is essential listening.

Brilliant musicianship by one and all. David Conrad can certainly stand toe to toe with Jamaaladeen Tacuma or Mick Karn and the clever interplay between him and Thomas Hamlin on drums is a delight to savor. One of the tightest rhythm sections I have heard in the last 25 years. Mike Fazio's piercing guitar playing is years ahead of what came later in the 80's, 90's and even today. Certainly an admirer of Fripp, Rundgren & Hendrix, you can also hear a Steve Cropper mentality in his playing quite like John McGeough's wonderful guitar playing with Siouxsie & The Banshees. Larry Kirwan's vocals are very different from what most people know of him do today in Black 47. His urgency stands on par with Robert Smith circa The Cure years between Pornography and The Top and he stretches in angst-ridden leaps and bounds like a pissed-off Peter Hammill. Fred Parcell's electronic approach to trombone is in a class by itself. No one, and I mean no one sounds like him.

As the album progresses in chronological timeframe, so does the band's stretch into uncharted territory. You can hear in the beginning tracks the bands raw unproduced New York mindset not unlike Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, Television and Talking Heads (Affairs Of The Heart) (Down By The Waterfront) urging into something entirely new (You Send Me Like So Many Nuclear Missiles) (Hell Without You).

(Sweet & Sour Sadness Of Sunday Afternoons) and (Nuclear Missiles) have their non-stop eerie moments. The Beatles cover of I Am The Walrus has absolutely nothing to do with the original and somehow forges Van Der Graaf Generator with A Certain Ratio. In fact, the whole vibe of this album is one of an eerie sense of taking the best funk/punk elements of the first few brilliant A Certain Ratio or 23 Skidoo albums with Howard Devoto & Magazine's unique bent on post punk progressive and elaborating those elements with the art and power of Van Der Graaf Generator with of course, different instruments. Quite a feat considering no one from the 80's ever attempted this before. But the highlight of the album for me remains the weird atmospheric Hostage Of The Heart, an awesome number with mysterious hypnotic appeal and the arrangement, especially the drone-like guitar, reminds me of what Kitchens Of Distinction would do later in the eighties or Interpol is attempting even now. To me, it's on a par with Magazine's beautifully strange masterpiece Back To Nature on the Secondhand Daylight album. Chill Faction was a band of many talents but unfortunately did not continue. This collection is therefore to be treasured. Anyone interested in the annals of indy New York rock should not miss this.

4 out of 5 stars a Stephen Philips compilation.......2006-07-03

This is another quality compilation of ambient, deep chill, and atmospheric music, from Stephen Philps' Washington, DC-based Dark Duck Records.

The track listing:
1. Excelsior - Conscious Freq
2. Twine - Illumination
3. E. Voice P. - Entered Apprentice
4. Dreamstate - Alpha Waves
5. Alan Imberg - Overview of Water
6. Subspace - Nebulunar
7. Deep Chill Network - Explorations
8. Stephen Philips - On the Edge
9. James Johnson - Drift

As a James Johnson fan, I bought this largely for the final track...I am giving this CD four stars only because of the wide variation in tone of the rest of the tracks. That is, I wish the whole thing was as good as the last song. If you prefer variation over the more ambient sound then you'll rate this higher, deep chill is just not my thing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music for the season.......2007-01-10

Beautiful songs sung with clarity, interpretive artistry and attention to blend. Some of the more particularly lyrical songs (e.g. Zgodava's Out of Oriental Crystal Skies, and Paulus' Sing Hallelu to name two) are not found in more common choral album Christmas repertoires and are a delight to experience for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars This is Christmas.......2007-01-10

As a companion to The Christmas Mood, it will bring joy to your heart.
This Christmas music is lively and joyful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-12-06

Music is appreciated on opinion and personal taste, so I'll simply give mine.

This collection is far too good to be missed by anyone, dissuaded by a couple of negative reviews. If you haven't already discovered the Burt Carols, this is an excellent introduction. Alfred Burt was in attendance at these recording sessions by volunteer professional singers, including the King Sisters. Jimmy Joyce did a fantastic job of organizing (and I'm assuming arranging) these carols.

The arrangements and vocals are thoughtful, and beautiful. What an amazing legacy that Burt left behind, as he died at the young age of 33.

This music captures the spirit of the Christmas season perfectly, and musical snobbery should have no place in the face of these masterpieces.

You will love this collection of the complete Burt carols. It is part of an annual tradition at our household.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Christmas Carols performed soft and sweet.......2006-10-04

The carols of Alfred Burt have always been something special, and thanks to the efforts of various singers (Nat King Cole, Julie Andrews, John Williams and the Boston pops, etc.) many of these carols are still heard occasionally though not frequently enough to my ears.

This album originated on Lp in the 1960s as a stereo answer to an earlier 10" Lp on the Columbia label which featured many of the Burt carols. This is a complete collection of all 15 carols. The effect is simple and pure as if a group of carolers were gathered at your door. The voices blend beautifully. There are a few glitches in the transfer and the opening notes of "We'll Dress The House" have been clipped.

For anyone looking for the real music of Christmas but wanting something beyond the standard two dozen famous carols, this disc will provide a welcome change of pace.

5 out of 5 stars a definite five star album.......2005-12-19

I have nearly 120 Christmas albums. This ranks as one of my favorites. I am quite suprised that some of the reviewers were so critical. First, to the best of my knowledge there is currently no other complete collection of the Alfred S. Burt carols. That alone makes this album special. Secondly, the 16 voice a capella choir of the Voices of Jimmy Joyce do a wonderful job. The singing is crisp and concise, the lyrics easily understood. The musicianship is excellent and the arrangements are extremely good. The third verse is always performed with the original Burt harmonization. While the additions of new arrangements distress some reviewers, I believe that repeating the same harmonization for multiple verses would become tiresome and dry. The melodies are exquisite and harmonize well in new ways. The arrangements used by Joyce are fresh, but in no way dissimilar or out of context with the originals. The effect is of a continuous whole and the album works perfectly. I would highly recommend this album for someone wishing to purchase quality Christmas music. As for the Waring version, I have not heard it, and it is not currently available on CD. It would seem rather ridiculous to deny yourself the joy of these carols now in hopes that maybe at some future time another version might be released.

4 out of 5 stars A Tall Order, but a Good Effort.......2005-07-15

(I own the original LP version of this album, so I am here commenting on the musical content only, not the quality of digital transfer, remastering or what-have-you.) Overall I was quite pleased with this album, my only previous exposure to Burt's carols being the selections performed by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. I will say that those remain my favorite performances of those particular tunes, as they are very simply interpreted and altered very little, if at all, from Burt's original scores, and that seems to yield the best results. However, I don't think the Joyce Singers' re-arrangements are inappropriate, as some other reviewers have expressed. In a few cases the arrangements get more elaborate than they maybe need to be, but I would not go as far as to say they are in bad taste. Burt's melodies are very strong --they do not suffer from the changes in the supporting parts, and if I am not mistaken, each cut on the album contains at least one verse of the composer's original part-writing. I have yet to hear an album of exclusively Burt carols that I've enjoyed more; very good overall. But, to my knowledge, nobody's recorded the perfect one yet.

4 out of 5 stars Chill with a splash of Smooth!!.......2005-07-06

Mike Di Lorenzo has had his work showcased on the radio program, "Chill with Chris Botti". His style is a mix between Herbie Hancock, Alex Bugnon and David Benoit. The CD is very much "Chill", Downtempo, Latin and the Rick Braun inspired trumpet on some his tracks makes it a very good listen. The comparison is clear on the tracks "Loosey Goose" & "Severance", which displays his diverse keyboard talents. My personal favorite tracks were the title track and "West 47th". Di Lorenzo's CD is very smooth and hip. It's a hidden gem that listeners will not be disappointed with.
