The Beatles had the White Album, Metallica, a black album, and now Staind has its gray album. While lumped in with the often indistinguishable nu metal crowd, Staind stands out, thanks in part to memorable ballads, such as the pained and beautiful "It's Been A While" and "Epiphany" from the quartet's 2001 breakthrough Break the Cycle. Their latest represents a natural progression; realizing the commercial potential of the poignant but heavy rock ballad, they've penned a slew of them. The light and cheery "How About You" is radio-ready, while the layered, string-backed "So Far Away," and honest and grateful musing on success, is another get-out-the lighters showcase for singer Aaron Lewis. Lewis's beautiful ode for his baby, "Zoe Jane," a tribute to late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley ("Layne," which intentionally and effectively cops Alice's signature sound), and the grandiose thank-you note "Intro" are more strong, overtly introspective entries in Lewis' sometimes mushy, sometimes touching CD diary. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:
Staind's weakest album........2007-06-01
Ok, I like staind alot, and I think that they are the best post-grundge band without a doubt, While bands that tried to sound like eddie veddger from pearl jam were all over the place, including the cliche' Creed. Staind had something about them that was unique. The last 2 albums were some of the best Nu-metal albums of all time in which has been a genre laughed at by some people, Staind actually were one of the few bright spots around that time with Dysfunction and Break the Cycle. 14 shades of gray is... really a ballad sallad Of songs. Some are well written, and well it really has nothing dynamic about it, nothing that makes you go "Wow". The lyrics, which I always found from Aaron lewis to be about hope, even in the last 2 albums (I don't really find the lyrics depressing, just very deep thinking) are the highlights of this album.
Average album with too many slow songs........2007-02-03
Despite what other reviewers have said this album was not better than Break the cycle infact 14 Shades is a more slower and mellow album from Staind and it has gained more mainstream success from songs like So far away and Price to play which are not bad but I've heard alot better from Staind, the rest of the songs range from average to pretty good like the song Layne which is a tribute to Layne Staley from Alice in Chains and Reality which has a good chorus line, Zoe Jane was a very boring acoustic ballad which was dedicated to his daughter yawn!. The problem with 14 Shades is that it doesn't rock hard like the previous albums even though the singer Aaron Lewis is still able to write some good lyrics and the band is very talented unlike other Nu-metal bands out there.
STAIND Rocks!.......2007-01-05
Excellent CD, the bonus DVD was a very nice surprise! Even if you already have this CD, it's worth buying again to get the DVD! STAIND!!!
Excellent.......2006-12-19
I'm a huge fan of this band and i must say that this rivals 'Dysfunction' as being their best record i think. It's an efficiently written record that i was sorry to see limp in at no.22 of the Irish music charts back in 2003 but then it's the fans that keep the music alive anyhow.
Definitely worth buying.
Real emotion.......2006-10-18
I don't know what the thing is with Staind. Most people either love them or hate them, you usually can't find any middle ground. One reason is because they are often lumped in with the likes of Creed and Nickelback as the poster boys of nu metal, which for some reason is an unacceptable form of music to some people. Another explanation is that the band came on really strong with a more Slipknot or Korn-esque style when they first started recording music, and then began playing a softer, more commercially viable version of metal. All that is true, but they have, in the process, fine-tuned and refined their product and become one of the most popular bands in the genre today.
I find myself in the first group of people and enjoy the music of Staind. I like their earlier effort, Dysfunction, all the way through their most recent, Chapter V. 14 Shades of Grey though, is easily the best in my opinion. The most obvious thing that sets Staind apart from other bands out there is the emotion in the song lyrics. It's truly genuine in a number of their songs, and has been ever since Break the Cycle was released. They aren't made up or faked, which is sometimes the feeling I get when listening to other bands play. Not that that is neccesarily a bad thing, I mean you have to write something for your song lyrics, but genuine song lyrics improve the music in a big way. The reason Aaron Lewis is able to achieve this is because he writes about things that matter to him, his lyrics quite often are extremely personal. He sings about real things in his life, like his relationship with his wife and with his daughter- "Fill Me Up" and "Zoe Jane." Also, the inevitable hardships of life that everyone will eventually experience- "So Far Away." Those are things that almost everyone will relate with. Hence, an audience. Definitely not rocket science, brain surgery, or {insert your favorite cliche here}. It just makes sense.
Of course, the music doesn't suck either, but that's anyone's opinion. Here are my favorites: "Price to Play", "So Far Away", "Yesterday", and "Reality." If you're thinking about purchasing the CD, but aren't sure yet, I say go for it. If you're looking for heavy metal/death metal/thrash metal, then look somewhere else. All lyrics are clearly sung and you won't find any rage, hatred, or any of the like on this disc. Was this review helpful to you? Don't answer unless you've listened to the record. Four stars.

Amazon.com essential recording
From the swaggering frustration in the first song ("I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping," Mick Jagger sings in the hyper "Rocks Off"), the Stones speed through familiar neighborhoods of country, blues, and R&B on Exile. They never even bother to stop when they've crashed into something. They don't leap into new worlds so much as master the old ones, turning Slim Harpo's blues obscurity "Hip Shake" into a harp-and-piano steamroller and setting spines a-cracking in "Ventilator Blues." Both "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards's "Happy" have become hits, but the 1972 album is most notable for its overall murky adrenaline. --Steve Knopper
Amazon.com
Before Keith Richards's bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess--Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol--but that's just part of this album's hazy game. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
A MASTERPIECE! ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER MADE!.......2007-07-10
This is such an incredible two album set. From the opening guitar lick of "Rocks Off" to the final strum in "Soul Survivor" we know we have just listened to a amazing collection of music! This is not a hits album by any stretch! It is a record that sounds great from start to finish or picking random cuts. I am a musician and I have been a DJ in past years in clubs and pubs. I always got a great response from the hip customers when I would throw in "Casino Boogie" or "All Down The Line" in at the local pub. What some folks don't understand is how many different sounding songs are on this album! Most groups today have one or two songs and the just keep regurgitating them out over and over again to fill album after album. This is the my favorite Stones album and it doesn't even contain my favorite Stones song! A timeless classic!
Timeless, and even better (!) than I remembered.......2007-07-03
You know, I haven't visited this album in a long time; it has been one of my very favorite works of art since its release in '72, but it seemed like one of those things that might have been played out for me. I've been helping my wife load her iPod with things I think are essential, and naturally this came to mind, so in the process I gave it another spin. To say that I am reinfatuated is an understatement, which gives rise to this review. "Exile" is just such a work of uncommon depth and maturity and desperation and joy and carnality and the whole nine yards that it is nearly staggering. Plus it rocks harder than you ever will. Don't listen to haters who bemoan its lack of hits; it flows like nothing else...best digested as a whole. And anyways, "Tumbling Dice" was a certifiable hit back in the day; I know, I was alive then, and it was an indelible part of the soundtrack of the summer of '72. This listen brought me back to my very first needle drop on "Rocks Off" in '72 when I was 13 years old. From the first whomp of Charlie's drums I remember it as being a life-changing experience that gave me some idea of what adult music and life was all about. And the power and glory of this record is such that I have always been mystified over the critical response alluding to the allegedly murky mix, etc. To me it simply sounds like the perfect example of what rock and roll is supposed to sound like, and when words and phrases emerge from the mix they're almost always a surprise, even after thirty-five years. This record is proof positive of the enduring greatness of the Stones, and is to my ears their finest hour, and then some.
Quick question: My CD version of this is an original CBS era iteration (bought it like in '87-88), and it still sounds pretty good to me, even with the undoubted advances in mastering since then. Is this relatively newer Virgin version a BIG BIG BIG sonic upgrade, or just a sonic uptick? Thanks!
Exile on my street.......2007-05-30
Exile on main street is one of the best. With a variety of styles it nrver drags. Great songs like Let it loose, Shine a light. Rocks Off, Soul Surivor Tumbling Dice and Ventilator Blues is a paint peeler. Sweet Virginia and Torn and Frayed are good country.Stop Breaking down and shake your Hips are good blues, good slide on stop Breaking Down Texas blues on Shake your Hips. Sweet Black Angel is great reggae.
Maybe the best .......2007-05-11
This is just great..
Keith, Mick, Mick, and Nicky are at their best.
Definitly in my top 5.......2007-03-26
Jagger and Richards really go back to their roots in argubly the best stones album and on of the best of all time. Every track is just about perfect. What I like best about this album is how it opens with an electric exciting fast 4 or 5 tracks then slowly sets into a slower and occaisionally acoustic tone. Very few albums are better then this.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album!.......2005-06-23
This album is amazing. Staind has very thought-provoking and deep lyrics to their songs, as well as great talent in how they portray them. That's all I have to say. What else is there to say about such a great band?
1)Price to Play: 5/5 - Incredible opening track. The heaviness almost catches me off guard every time! :) It talks about how the game of life is a bad influence on people.
2)How About You:4/5 - Cool track. It talks about the danger of conforming to make friends.
3)So Far Away: 4/5 - Another good song. The singer describes being far away from his problems with someone he loves.
4)Yesterday: 10/5 - My favorite track! It has the most amazing sound to it. And it sings about a guy being isolated, but no one caring.
5)Fray: 5/5 - Another great song. Very creepy lyrics. Its about a father's relationship with an anerexic daughter.
6)Zoe Jane: 5/5 - Great track, but very sad and very light. It sings about a father not having enough time for his daughter.
7)Fill Me Up: 5/5 - Cool track. It changes the mood a great deal with a little heaviness. And it sings about a guy loving being with his girlfriend.
8)Layne: 3/5 - An OK song. I don't listen to it that often tho. But it sings about a wife leaving her husband and child (perhaps by death), but still being there in spirit and helping them.
9)Falling Down: 5/5 - Cool song and very creative lyrics. It talks about a person being in their own world, but having a hard time coming back to reality.
10)Reality: 8/5 - Another one of my favorite tracks! Its so CREEPY!!! lol The lyrics really are amazing. It sings about a person stressed from life and trying to handle it with pills, conformity, and isolation. (And don't worry, it doesn't encourage drug use or anything). Amazing stuff!
11)Tonight: 4/5 - Another OK song, although I haven't heard it that much. But it sings about a father with his daughter not expecting so much hate from the world.
12)Could It Be: 5/5 - A very good song. Great mood and beat to it. And it sings about how a man can't change who he is at all.
13)Blow Away: 6/5 - Another really good one! And another very creepy one! It basically discusses how a man fears human mortality.
14)Intro: 9/5 - Another really good one!! Strange name for it tho. *.* But its really cool and creepy and just fits so well as an ending track. I don't know for sure what it sings about, tho.
As you can see, the numbers speak for themselves. This is a masterpiece album by Staind!
Softer, but they finally have reached their full potential!.......2003-09-21
I totally agree with POD2, this CD is softer. But don't forget this is what Staind is meant to sound like, they've brought back the hard rock ballad. The songs are much more sadder and poignant than before. The standout song here that will bring most fans to tears is Aaron's tribute to his daughter, entitled "Zoe Jane". The song has a great musical ambience along with sad and passionate lyrics. People have lashed out at Staind for becoming too soft, they haven't. If you kindly would recall, wasn't Break The Cycle a slow album too? I agree that they have changed from the hard rock sound of Dysfunction, but I personally think that this is Staind Matured! Those that liked the hard rock sound of Break the Cycle will still be pleased with the rock on this CD, it's just a little softer. Do buy this and make Staind richer so they can continue making quality albums!
kind of soft.......2003-07-15
This cd is softer compared to dysfunction and btc. And most of the songs sound the same including the sellout song so far away.Get dysfunction instead or btc.
A Masterpiece.......2003-07-06
It looks as though the sun is finally shining through Stainds dark and stormy life. Fans of Stainds heavy-rocking raw sounds from Dysfunction but disliked the softer, more melodic tones of Break the Cycle will probably hate this new addition even more. Where as Break the Cycle had much less roaring guitars than previous works, theres not even a hint of them in 14 Shades. If you were hoping for a resurrection of Stainds old sound, then quit reading now. But for those of us who liked Break the Cycle and were wishing for more softer stuff, here it is:
1) Price You Play - A moving song discussing the consequences of our choices. Great sound and awesome singing. One of my favorites.
2) How About You - Good sound behind lyrics asking listener to decide what kind of person they want to be. Very valid points are made on this song.
3) So Far Away - Another favorite. Excellent soft guitar melody, Lewis reflects on how much life has changed for himself and others.
4) Yesterday - A different sound for Staind on this song. Talks about rising above lifes challenges and finding yourself. Love the chorus.
5) Fray - Great song. Good sound, Lewis trying to convince us not to go down the same road that he did.
6) Zoe Jane - Best song on the album, best song by Staind. Aaron expresses boundless love for his daughter, Zoe Jane. The music is absolutely beautiful, magnifying Lewiss incredible voice in such a way that I can hardly keep myself from crying each time I hear it. I live for songs like this.
7) Fill Me Up - Pretty good song. Cool guitar riff, I assume the song is directed to Lewiss wife, thanking her for the strength she gives him.
8) Layne - Awesome song! A tribute to Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley. Written in Alices own style, this is the perfect song to remember Staley by.
9) Falling Down - Pretty cool track. Lyrics rebuke prideful people with a sort of what goes around comes around attitude. Musics pretty good.
10) Reality - Good song. Basically saying to live life the best you can and not be afraid of it; great music.
11) Tonight - Basically another good song about how things have changed. Musics great and I absolutely LOVE the chorus.
12) Could It Be - One of my favorites! Interesting guitar sample, great chorus. Pretty much talking about being yourself, sort of.
13) Blow Away - A great song. Has a mournful kind of sound to it; Aaron singing regretfully about fading memories and how he wishes to be alone.
14) Intro - Good way to end the album. Aaron thanks the people that he loves and beats down on those he dislikes; musics amazing and Lewis sings with compassion and anger; one of my favorites.
It all sounds like Staind, just much calmer. 14 Shades of Grey is Stainds best album yet and everyone should own it. If your even thinking about getting it, then stop thinking and do it. If you liked Break the Cycle then youll love this one even more. Trust me.

The splicing together of nu metal, rap, funk, and sterile electronica laced with dark melodies as infectious as anything Britney has to offer inspired 6 million people to purchase copies of Limp Bizkit's Significant Other. With Chocolate Starfish, they perfect their formula. From the electro-infused "Intro" through the contagiously chugging "My Generation" to the straight-up rap of "Getcha Groove On," Chocolate Starfish is a slick, clinical, and flawless platform for Fred Durst's effortlessly savage--and occasionally unintentionally comic--sociological rants geared toward disaffected youth. Ultimately, though, it's that undeniably intelligent musical backdrop--the brooding guitar sound that gave the Mission Impossible 2 theme haunting new life and menace, and defines "Hot Dog," "Full Nelson," "My Way," "Rollin'," "Boiler," and "It'll Be Okay"--that makes this a seething work of genius. The fact is, with rap and rock saying pretty much the same thing, Limp Bizkit have plenty of competition. They just do what they do better than everyone else. --Dan Gennoe

what the hell happened after their debut cd?.......2003-03-10
yeah there are some catch songs yadda yadda yadda...but im missin the 'Three Dollar Bill Y'all' style...seems to have vanished after they did the video for Faith. maybe they liked selling out except for Wes eventually when he quit. i've heard a track off of the new album 'Bipolar they have set for this summer and its not bad, im hoping that they go back to the Counterfiet and the Leech shuff...
doods, they need to 'bring that beat back!' as they once said.
Pure Garbage.......2002-04-28
I NEVER liked Limp Bizkit. In fact, the ONLY reason I bought this cd is because a friend of mine said that it was "the best thing Limp Bizkit has ever done." Boy, what a load of crap that was! This cd perfectly displays how Limp Bizkit was one of rock/metal's biggest mistakes. It's a pure disgrace to know that KoRn, the most important band in metal history in my opinion, discovered these [guys]. The music that Limp Bizkit plays on here is as always, repetitive and bland. Fred Durst doesn't even attempt to sing on here. Why bother? We've all heard him try to sing, and he just plain [not good]! And also, the constant use of the f-word is just kind of immature. REAL musicians don't find it necessary to constantly use profanities in their songs. Avoid this cd at all costs. Nothing on this cd is worth anyone's time.
limp bizkit rulz.......2002-03-16
Believe me when I say this. This CD is great. I love all the rock songs especially "My Way" and "Rollin (Air Raid Vehicle)". WWF Superstar the Undertaker has "Rollin" for his entrance music. I'll admit this guy is not my favorite wrestler but because he uses this song he has the best entrance. Anybody who loves Limp bizkit or other rock stars like kid rock or Korn will love this Cd.
Limp Bizkit-AWESOME CD!!!.......2001-12-05
Wow......where do I start?? This CD is for anyone who likes rap AND rock. It has swears, so make sure ya check w/ the 'rents before you buy this CD. The songs have a great beat. I love this CD!
stupendous.......2001-12-02
It is now ok to be the real, mature immature, stupid rude jerk that is actually how everyone feels but never had the self confidence to be. Yeah, no stupidly sappy sad serious drama-get over your parents and be the rude jerk that you honestly are-I can sing "yeah" to that song better than any lyric in anyother song anywhere. Yeah.

After 2001's tender and tormented No More Shall We Part, Nick Cave's Nocturama sounds like the work of a madman spinning desperately and beautifully out of control. Since the Birthday Party called it quits in 1983, Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have reframed the Party's cranky and disturbing post-punk to encompass sad blues, literary nihilism, and a kind of serenity; witness Shall We Part, and 1997's The Boatman's Call. Those qualities are still present on Nocturama, most notably in the brokenhearted violin that winds through "Right Out of Your Hand" and "She Passed by My Window." But Cave's arrangements embrace a range of styles and textures. The 14-minute-plus noise explosion of "Babe, I'm on Fire" and the dark, wide-open pop of "Bring It On" are looser and rougher than anything since at least 1994's Let Love In. This makes Nocturama feel messy, unpredictable, and even a little dangerous--qualities Cave's music hasn't had in far too long. --Matthew Cooke

Don't nag! Just bring it on!.......2006-06-23
A lot of people, and apparently even Nick Cave himself, have complained a bit about the album. Too shallow in its depths, too obvious, disappointing song texts going nowhere, a particular song ("Bring it on") would be nothing more than a cheap and corny rock song, and so on.
But what is exactly wrong with a cheap and corny rock song, as long it is catchy enough to want to sing along? And "Bring it on" does just that to me.
As does the manic "Dead man in my bed". Who cares if the lines do suggest little more than a cheap B-horror flick about waking up and find... a dead man in your bed. You can see Nick Cave almost swinging out of your sereo system, boy is he ever having fun!
And then there is the surprise of the year: "Babe, I'm on fire", the 14 minute plus song that "goes all the way" and leaves you gasping for breath, only to "go even further", all the way to purgatory and back. Big fat tongue-in-cheek trashy thing. It's a spoof, it's a fake, it's hard core fun and a huge "take a run on the wild side".
The limited edition of this disc contains the video for this musical outburst and it's hilarious fun. Repetitious as hell, yeah, but you're missing the point if you don't see that it is just that what's the fun of it.
And to end with the opening song: rarely have I heard Nick Cave more melancholical, rainy, bluesy and haunting. Piano tones dripping like rain drops. "We can build our dungeons in the air / and sit and cry the blues / We can stomp across this world / with nails hammered through our shoes. / We can join that troubles chorus / who criticise and accuse / It don't mater much / We got nothing much to lose / But this wonderful life..."
Shallow? Obvious? I call it Weltschmerz turned into straight and horrifying Caveian art. And isn't that just what we want from The Man?
Requires repeated listening ..........2004-11-13
As with much of Nick Cave's work, "Nocturama" needs time to sink in. Why everyone (including myself) loves the album, "And No More Shall We Part", is because it's very accessible (perhaps his most accessible album), but it's subtle in its hooks, which is why people find it so attractive and mature.
With "Nocturama", the hooks are more obvious and is therefore interpreted as 'too conventional'. That is until the track "Babe I'm on Fire". There is an incredible amount of debate about this song. What throws people off is that it repeats themes for 14 minutes - themes being verse - chorus - verse - chorus, etc. The song almost embodies noise rock, but within a structure. I find it to contain an incredible amount of charisma and showmanship. It truely puts the Nick Cave fan to the test. If you can appreciate the unconventionality (and I'm not referring to some kind of pretentious avant-garde) and pure skill of Cave's vocal delivery, then you truely have an open mind - and a fine taste in music, in my opinion.
But while there are some great moments (I personally find "Bring It On" to be a great pop song - as pop was intended to sound at least), there are some lackluster moments as well.
I have some mixed feelings about "Dead Man in my Bed", whereas I liked the lyrics and loved the outro (the 'We've gotta get ourselves together' chant), but overall there seems to be something missing, overall I'd give it 3/5 stars. The worst track is "Right out of Your Hand", which isn't to say it's terrible, but compared to Cave's previous work, it's pretty bad.
I have mixed feelings about "Rock of Gibraltar" as well, because I sort of like it because it has a kind of simple gospel hook and rhyming scheme. But it strikes me as almost too conventional, there are no surprises except that Cave wrote such a conventional song. The song itself I'd give 3/5 stars.
The rest of the tracks would amount to "And No More Shall We Part" B-sides (as a previous reviewer mentioned), which is still pretty impressive. The songs are simpler and softer (an almost pop country sound) than the usual Cave affair both lyrically and musically - but that's just more proof that Cave is continuing to cover all the bases.
Also I must mention that the limited edition of this album is only worth it if you like "Babe I'm on Fire", because there's a music video of it - which is just pure fun. All others will be perfectly content with the regular album.
A real disappointment!.......2004-01-11
Nick Cave had some of the greatest albums of the last ten years. Then this. Wonderful Life is quite good and He Wants You is fine. However, my problems come with the "rock" songs. Bring It On is completely uninspired as is Right Out of Your Hand. My biggest qualm is with the (and I can't believe I'm saying this for any Nick Cave song) truly horrible "Babe, I'm on Fire". 17 minutes of the same verses. This is the only 17 minute song that probably took 17 minutes to write. My feeling on this CD is that someone told him to try and mix the new sound of his prior, truly wonderful recordings with his old sound. This mixture leads to a bunch of poorly written songs that seem quite forced. However, every artist has a bad album here and there. Note: The DVD video of "Babe I'm on Fire" is kind of silly and fun but the song is just so so bad.
Underdeveloped.......2003-07-26
This is Nick at his most disappointing. Lyrically and musically the album is underdeveloped--most strikingly in the tiresome, often childish lyrics (e.g. Rock of Gibraltar). The love ballads are starkly unconvincing, the rocking tracks are dull and repetitious. There is very little enjoyment to be taken from this listen, particularly in comparison with Cave's last studio release, the exquisitely crafted No More Shall We Part.
Mediocre Nick.......2003-04-13
NIck Cave has a habit of putting out a great album followed by a good but decidedly less powerful album. And he's done it again. No More Shall We Part is one of Cave's best albums. There are at least three or four songs that are classics! I'd have to say that this album has none. Not that they're bad! It's a good album. Just not up to par. In fact most of this album sounds like B-sides from the No More Shall We Part sessions. However, Nick is my very favorite musical artist and I will still buy anything he puts out, because chances are it will staisfy me more than 99% of the albums released that year.

Michel Pages Music fan.......1998-12-20
