Probably Def Leppard's best album, and certainly their most successful, Hysteria pretty much sums up 80s hard rock: catchy, tuneful, and fun. It's also one of the few albums from the period that doesn't sound dated now, and singles like "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Armageddon It", and "Rocket" remain staples of rock radio. The rest of the album is equally entertaining; "Animal" and "Hysteria", while mid-tempo, have the same slick intensity, and "Love Bites" is one of the few pop-metal ballads that doesn't sound saccharine over a decade after its release. Def Leppard may be remembered more for their hair than their music these days, but that's more due to changing tastes than anything else. It's still good. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-21

Songs like Pour some sugar on me and animal and rocket made this album go listento the top. This is one of they're greatest albums so if your into hard rock I highly recommend you to by this. this is a very fun Album to to!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect, well...almost.......2007-06-19

Everything down to the last guitar note on this classic 20 year old release was recorded to perfection. I believe that is what makes this record flawed. As it turns out, over-production may be the only thing that is wrong with Hysteria.
12 tracks and pretty much no filler. Great album rock songs such as Women, Rocket, and Gods of War. Pop hits such as Love Bites and Pour Some Sugar on Me. 7 MTV hits! That was and still is unheard of. I once read that there was also an 8th video that was for the song Love and Affection that was scrapped by the band. Back in the late 80s most bands released the rocker as the first single and most of the time did well with that. The Ballad was second and a lot of the time became an even bigger hit and if you were lucky you'd be able to release another single/video and that was pretty much it and you'd record your next record and start that process again. That formula worked very well for band in the same genre such as Motley Crew, Bon Jovi, Poison, and White Lion.
With Hysteria, Def Leppard totally ruled from about late '87 to about early '90. Almost all of my early teen years are bookended by this record. Looking back now almost 20 years later, the only thing I would change would have been the production, that today sounds dated. Even with that said, this record is a monster and if you were not one of the 20 or so million that bought it, it would not be a bad investment.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon, get it on!!!.......2007-06-05

Def Leppard's 1987 classic Hysteria sounds terrific 20 years after its release. With the help of the album's straight-out 80's rock vibes, sweet lyrics, catchy tunes, harmonious choruses, and solid grade-A rock ballads, Hysteria is commended as one of the greatest albums ever made. The album features Leppard's finest work: the monumentally popular Pour Some Sugar On Me, the hair-raising Rocket, the heartbreaking Love Bites, the spine-tingling Hysteria, the elusive Animal, and the awesome Women.

The album will leave you with the impression that 80's hair bands weren't so dreadful after all, and Def Leppard are to be taken nothing less than seriously!

5 out of 5 stars 17 Million copies and counting.......2007-05-23

17 million people can't be wrong presumably. But they can give it a pretty good shake. And that is the real issue here. So because I'm a benevolent soul you guys are gonna get two, yep two reviews.

The first goes a bit like this;

After taking three years to get around to having this ablum done the band were really at risk of losing the momentum garnered through Pyromania. But they were ready and willing to take the risk. And the time spent in the studio can be felt in the arrangments, the choral effects, the technology of this album. Of course now it doesn't sound so amazing, but much of this was done before a lot of the computerised tricks of latter day productions even existed. The work that went into producing this hard rock monolith is pretty extraordinary.
And the huge hits are a testament to the experience of the band. Single after single flew up the charts in various territories and rewarded all those who worked on the project. The lushness of the production means that the chorus' sound huge while the verses, which are often carried by the rhythm section in an almost minimalist way, still sound full bodied.
And the track sequencing is pretty clever too, a judicious blend of rockers with bite, party rockin' tunes and ballads. Love and Affection may not work but other than that pretty much every track has something about it. And this means that this album is dragged upwards to be a classic hard rock album.

But then here is #2;

The descent into utterly technology dependant rubbish is here complete. This band, who started as NWOBHM rockers and who were heavily AC/DC influenced on their second album, have here descended into an impotent mess with all the human feel of a Dalek. The guitars are, well they are largely what Prodigy and NIN would call guitar textures and are barely recognisable as coming from the same band that released some of those earlier records. And nowhere on the album is there anything as psychologically thought out or ambitious as Die Hard the Hunter (nope, Gods of War don't come close). No storytelling, no poignancy and no real reason to exist and like circus balloons the whole thing is full of air - no substance at all, right down to the cover art which looks like the album sounds, technologically dependant. It actually looks like the promo for some dodgy sci-fi movie from around 1985.

So this album is either five stars or none, take your pick!

5 out of 5 stars What's Left To Say?.......2007-05-11

"Hysteria" is, quite frankly, one of the greatest rock albums ever created. It doesn't take much to back up this claim. It produced multiple hits which include "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Rocket," and "Armageddon It." It put Def Leppard on the map in the United States and it crossed multiple genre boundaries with its songs played on hard rock stations, pop stations, and even AC airwaves. People are still talking about this album today. There are very few people walking around who haven't heard of at least one of the songs on this album. They may not know the band's name or even the name of the album, but they do recognize the songs.

If you've never heard this album before, please listen to it. Def Leppard is one of a limited number of bands to crawl out of the late 80's who had a distinctive and easily recognizable sound. Def Leppard was one of the loudest and heaviest of the hair bands AND they managed to crank out some wonderful ballads that have managed to stand the test of time as well.

This particular album includes the aforementioned tunes as well as the wonderful title track, the anthemic "Women," rockers such as "Animal" and "Gods of War," and slower tracks like "Love and Affection." I guarantee you that there is something on this disc for everyone. From raunch to romance, "Hysteria" has all of the bases covered.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Still good.......2007-07-09

Was an absolutle blockbuster back when it was released, and interestingly enough, it still holds up pretty well. Of course it is fairly dated 80's rock, but they managed to put together a good enough album to last the test of time. Till now, at least.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-05-26

Great sound quality and I love the B-side songs. If you are a DL fan you cannot go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars i like it i love it.......2007-05-25

this is a fantastic purchase for the def leppard fan, especially if hysteria is what hooked you in the first place. i have worn out my first two copies, so love this one. it is almost identical to the original but with some great bonus tracks. a must for the true lepp fan.

5 out of 5 stars Hysteria at it's best!.......2007-03-09

This fine recording that was released back in 1987, (and I remember it well!) was a long time coming and it was worth it. This recording comes to life in full form, thanks to the remastering and all of the b-side recordings that was once very hard to find if you could. I was thrilled to have found the "Rock Of Ages Medley" that I heard played on the radio back in 1989. The Who, Golden Earring, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin are paid tribute to in a way that Def Leppard did very well. And the song "Elected" is a song I have heard for the first time and it has a strong 70's feel with that Def Leppard "magic" that should have been released on one of their albums back in the day. Anyway, I strongly recommend this 2CD package to all Def Leppard fans and to anyone who is interested in listening to a "now" classic heavy metal/rock-pop band. Cheers to the boys from Sheffield, England!

5 out of 5 stars Hysteria Deluxe.......2007-02-13

This remastered Hysteria album is great! it includes live versions and extended versions and new mixes of their hit songs such as Animal Armeggedon it Rocket and Elected. It also includes A Rock of Ages Medley and the rare Release Me performed by Stumpus Maximus & The Good Old Boys.
This is a must have for Def Leppard Fans

Album Description

4 O'clock & Hysteria is the first solo album by Alan Morse, well known as lead guitarist extraordinaire of Spock's Beard. With Spock's Beard, Morse has released nine successful studio albums and a pair of live CD / DVDs. He has also played in the past with Spencer Davies, Chad & Jeremy and even Chuck Norris. The instrumental tracks on Four O'clock And Hysteria feature brother Neal (keyboards and acoustic guitars) and all of the Spock's Beard members.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instrumental Paradise!.......2007-06-30

I don't have the words to describe how fantastic this record is but i'll give it a try. I have loads of instrumentals in my cd collection, the very best in guitar instrumentals, Vai, Satriani and such. I have many jazz- rock fusion instrumentals, Jeff Beck, Alan Holdsworth and such but this Alan Morse/Four O'clock and Hysteria is the iceing on top of my instrumental cake. This group of musicians have really outdone themselves. I can not pigeon hole this cd into any genre, except to say it is otherworldly. Very uplifting, great to listen to whatever you are doing, sitting in a chair, working out at the gym, driving down the highway, etc. To any music lover, go buy this! It's worth every penny. Yes, Spock's Beard is much better WITHOUT Neal's tunnel vision lyrics. The Beard has it's own identity now.

4 out of 5 stars The right way for a guitarist to do a debut solo album.......2007-06-04

There's no question that all the members of Spock's Beard have displayed mastery of their respective instruments over the years, so it shouldn't be any surprise that guitarist Alan Morse might attempt a solo album, right? But what IS a big surprise (for those of us who know him only from his playing with the Beard) is the kind of music he's chosen to play here. First of all, it's all instrumental - pretty radical when you think of some of the complex vocal tunes (e.g. "Thoughts" and "Gibberish") that SB is known for. And secondly, it's a guitar fusion album - nothing like the symphonic prog-pop of SB1 or the prog-metal of SB2. This is a very enjoyable album with 63 minutes of creative melodies and energy, a little funk thrown in on some tunes, and even some Spanish guitar stylings. Morse wrote all of the compositions, with assistance from his brother Neal in places. (I think I know that guy from somewhere too!) Reminiscent at various times of the rock fusion of guitar virtuosos Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Jeff Beck, this album is a real pleasant surprise for me, and a great showcase for the talents of one Alan Morse. Well done!

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.8/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.0 ("4-1/2 stars")

5 out of 5 stars Don't think Prog, think awesome............2007-05-23

Don't buy this album expecting Spock's Beard prog rock. This album is a mix fantastic melodic Jazz Fusion and cool rock that reminds me of Satriani's slower blues-ier tracks. The playing is top-notch but never decends into showing off, everything is rooted in Alan's beautifully melodic playing.

4 out of 5 stars Al's The Greatest!.......2007-05-22

This is so much better than I had expected - top-notch melodies and playing, excellent arrangements - and even a sort-of the Beards reunion on 'Return To Whatever'. If there's any drawback at all, I'd say that the album would have been even better with less keyboards.

5 out of 5 stars Alan's Playing Hysteria!.......2007-05-01

Wow! I almost could not believe what I was hearing. I didn't know that he had it in him to do a record like this. His playing in Spocks Beard is great, but I had no idea he could play rock-fusion like this! This CD instantly reminded me of a cross between Jeff Beck and Steve Vai! What an interesting piece of work. It was great to also hear Jerry Goodman on violin on the track "Return to Whatever". It is a very Mahavishnu/Return To Forever sounding piece played with real excitement here. The opening track is killer too. Great to also hear Neal Morse rock out once again without getting all preachy and spiritual. This is the best thing he's played on since Transatlantic. Who knew his brother was such an amazing artist in his own right. Very Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars the best from godfather goth.......2006-11-25

This is my favorite Peter Murphy solo cd. It is not the punk/goth of Bauhaus, but more metaphysical. Vivid and poetic imagery are at at their height in this album, echoed only slightly less so by his following album "Deep". When I first listened to it some sixteen years ago, I wasn't impressed the first time round. Several months later, I popped in the then cassette (now worn out and replaced with the cd)and gave it an honest listen. I was hooked for months thereafter and it has become one of the staples in my music collection, one of the cd's that for me is "home".

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-07-08

The music is good and Peter's vocal is awesome. One of his best albums.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless musical jewel.......2006-05-13

My introduction to Peter Murphy came with his album "Deep". I didn't learn about "Love Hysteria" until much later. Yet, when I found out about it, it still sounded fresh and as deep as in 1988 when it first came out, and that continues to be the case today.

Songs like the opening classic "All Night Long", the philosophical "Socrates The Python" and the epic ballad "Time Has Got Nothing To Do With It" make me go back to the album and feel uplifted each time I listen to it. The lyrics stand out particularly, framed by Murphy's unique deep voice and a musical signature that runs through the album, making this one of the two best Murphy has recorded (the other being "Deep").

5 out of 5 stars So Many Top Notch Tracks.......2004-08-24

A great CD for chilling. Definitely my favorite Peter Murphy release.

His voice is one that grabs you and doesn't let go. "Socrates the Python" while far from the poppier songs is magnificent. Very brooding.

Of course, the familiar "Indigo Eyes" and "All Night Long" are just absolutely fabulous. It's rare for a CD to have three all out homerun songs.

I really enjoy the gentle "Dragnet Drag". "I've Got a Minature Secret Camera" is another very cool tune.

I still remember when Peter Murphy brought his birthday boy Dad up on stage during the "Love Hysteria" tour. Really a class act, just like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Majestic.......2004-04-20

OK, so this was the album where I finally connected with Peter. I was introduced to Bauhaus and ToT in junior high and loved them, but just did not connect with his first solo effort. But there was just something about this album when it came out -- so much, in fact, that I have since collected just about every PM record, cd, and artifact I could find. From Indigo eyes to All Night Long to Socrates the Python to Blind Sublime, the album is rich and complex and beautiful, and by far his best work.

5 out of 5 stars Dare II.......2005-11-21

From the look and the sound, this is really Dare II for me. The drum sounds on most of the tracks is typical Human League. I like the songs a lot, just like Dare. What made this album worthwhile to purchase is the complete set of 5 bonustracks that were missing from the initial cd release. I still own the maxi singles (The 3 L's ;-)) from 1984 (The Lebanon, Life On Your Own & Louise) on which the beautiful Thirteen, The World Tonight and The Sign (Extended Version) stood. Louise came with a superb poster of the band. The one thing that wasn't included here was the instrumental version of The Lebanon, but we don't miss that one that much. Because of the remastering it's still 5 stars ;-) Nice to have...

5 out of 5 stars This is incredible playing! I can't say enough!.......2006-07-11

Rest assured that this is not "tuneless fiddling and toodling" as one reviewer commented. Although the first two listed pieces are contemporary, most listeners will find them melodic and easy to understand. The "Blue Gleam of Arctic Hysteria", by Oliver Kohlenberg, is more atmospheric than melodic, but I found that it did create the feeling of the desolation of an arctic winter. It does also showcase the wide range of sounds that the euphonium can achieve. Some of these sounds might be called gimmicks, but I was fascinated as to how Myllys could have achieved these effects. Thanks to reviewer Frank Meredith for explanations (see above).

As Frank Meredith noted, there is a surprise bonus selection on this CD! Wait for about one minute of silence after the end of "Blue Gleam of Arctic Hysteria" and you will be treated to a very nice and entertaining transcription of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" from "The Tale of the Tsar Saltan" for euphonium and piano. How do you make the euphonium sound like a bumblebee - you will have to listen to find out!

Myllys has a light, yet slightly brassy sound that I really liked - powerful when needed, but also precise and delicate. His style of playing really reminds me of Hakan Hardenberger, the noted Scandinavian trumpet player.

5 out of 5 stars World class musician and performance -- one of the best!.......2005-03-06

The playing exhibited here by Jukka Myllys clearly establishes him as a "world-class" musician. Especially gratifying is the depth of expression and nuance that are complimented by the truly remarkable range and technical prowess he possesses. The CD opens with the "Euphonium Concerto" by Jukka Linkola, who is the winner of numerous international awards. This may be the most significant addition to the euphonium repertoire since Curnow's "Symphonic Variants". I had to pause the CD after my first hearing in order to immediately play it again; and then again, to savor the feelings of having been through a unique musical and emotional experience. At nearly 28 minutes in length, I suggest setting aside an undisturbed hour so you too can experience it twice in a row. Linkola writes, "The Euphonium Concerto is unashamedly melodic music... I wanted to exploit to the full the songlike, sensuous quality as a vehicle to interpret the minutest nuance." In addition to writing masterfully for the euphonium, he has conceived an orchestral score that is equally rich in colors and nuances. For example, listen to it once concentrating on his use of the percussion section. The Oulu Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Arvo Volmer, deserves highest kudos for their equally sensitive and exciting playing. The musical world needs to hear more from these wonderful musicians and maestro.
Juha T. Koskinen's "Destination" is another fine contribution, here benefiting from the highly musical piano accompaniment of Hannu Hirvela. In its eight minutes it reflectively propels the listener from the opening "shrill cry" to the final destination.

"Blue Gleam of Arctic Hysteria", by Oliver Kohlenberg, is accompanied by piano (Hirvela) and percussion (Aki Virtanen). At 22 minutes it is probably the longest single movement work to date for the euphonium. It also contains what is probably the widest range portamento (12:27), the longest sustained pitch (20:30 for 1:20 with a flutter tongue at the end), and the widest written range (outside of gimmicks in "showpieces") in the repertoire. Included are some new techniques: flutter-tongued portamento (2:55 et al), humming portamenti over a slow trill in the pedal register (7:00), slowly removing the mouthpiece while liptrilling (2:30), and a tremolo (16:24) that sounds electronically enhanced (how did he do that?). Though this is more music for the head than the heart, it is especially commendable for the expansion of the sound palette it provides.

Be sure to let the disk run to the 22:50 mark for an unlisted bonus track that you are sure to enjoy. It provides the perfect "after-dinner treat"!

This recording was made possible with funds from the Foundation for the Promotion of Finnish music and the Finnish Performing Music Promotion Centre. They have given a special gift to the musical world in general and the euphonium world in particular. Wouldn't it be nice to have a euphonium concerto become part of the standard orchestral repertoire? Share the Linkola recording with every conductor you know. Let every composer hear this CD to know what the euphonium is capable of producing.

(Above excerpted from my review in the "TUBA Journal" Vol. 27, No. 2, Winter 1999, pp. 32-33. In the same issue is a full review of the Linkola "Concerto", pp. 23-24.)

    5 out of 5 stars Buy It!.......2001-08-21

Fantastic !! The music is a little "different", but it will grow on you. Playing is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars great CD, yet don't forget, it is contemporary.......2001-07-09

Although I was overjoyed upon hearing this CD, I was suprised by the modern feeling in the music. Usually euphonium pieces are more classical in style, yet only the first three tracks, the Euphonium Concerto, even hint at a classical past. The last two pieces are definately contemporary, yet very stirring. The performer, Jukka Myllys, effectively conveys emotions and submerses the listener in the "arctic" for the Blue Gleam of Arctic Histeria. This collection of beautifully crafted pieces easily ranks as the best collection of contemporary euphonium pieces ever written/performed.

4 out of 5 stars Great contribution to a genre that can always use one.......2001-06-27

This is a beautiful collection of original material for the euphonium that will interest both fans of contemporary music looking for something unusual, and fans of low brass instruments. If you're partial to Scandinavian composers you'll find that this is a worthy Finnish contribution to their already sizeable recorded literature.

The disc features the very first commercial recording of a concerto for euphonium and symphony orchestra - worth purchasing for the historical value alone.

4 out of 5 stars Johnnie Ray : Hysteria! the sinlges collection.......2007-06-21

For me growing up in South Africa in the early fifties, Johnnie Ray was an icon and a powerful musical influence : firstly his song "Walking in the Rain" on the LM (Lourenço Marques) hit parade, that remained on the air for weeks. Then came others such as "Yes tonight Josephine" and "Build your love" and Johnnie Ray became an established favourite in this part of the world.

The years passed by, and with them other famous singers and groups came and went; Johnnie Ray faded into the background of individual and national memories. But it is not surprising that this great talent from that simpler but vibrant era has survived the test of time, and although Johnnie Ray is no longer with us, his music, recorded in those days of less hi-technology, sounds every bit as marvellous today as it did then.

The above three remain my favourites now as before. The combination of Johnnie Ray's unique voice and style with the slick and groovy vocal and instrumental backing of Ray Conniff's orchestra on songs such as "Yes tonight, Josephine" and "Build your love" is exceptional and a prelude to the rock `n roll era. In the days of wind-up gramophones the needle would have worn almost through to the other side from all the replays! The majority of the tracks - including classics such as "The little white cloud that cried" and "Cry" with their poignant lyrics - are in a slower genre displaying another facet of this very talented singer, and they grow on you.

With a total of 60 songs this collection should satisfy most - whatever their personal preferences. As with almost all CDs, my favourites tend to be in the minority : I will probably copy about 12 tracks to my Apple computer library. But I certainly have no regrets about this purchase, and would gladly have paid the price just to hear again those songs that I love and remember best.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten star of the fifties.......2004-10-07

Johnnie Ray began his career in the late forties and had a steady run of hits until the end of the fifties, surviving the rock'n'roll revolution. This collection features all Johnnie's British hits and the majority of his American hits including all those that made the top ten. Nothing important is missed out.

In America, Johnnie's most famous song is Cry, with which he topped the American charts in 1949. Lynn Anderson had a major country hit with it in the seventies and Crystal Gayle repeated Lynn's feat in the eighties. Many other country singers have also covered Cry, Willie Nelson among them.

Apart from Cry, Johnnie had several other big hits in America. Little white cloud that could (the flip side of Cry) and Just walking in the rain both reached number two. Johnnie also made the top ten with Please Mr Sun, Here am I broken hearted (the flip side of Please Mr Sun), Somebody stole my gal and You don't owe me a thing. He had many other American hits but his chart history in Britain is more impressive despite there being no charts before November 1952.

Johnnie had three number one hits in the UK, these being Such a night (1954), Just walking in the rain (1956) and Yes tonight Josephine (1957). He had seven other UK top ten hits - Faith can move mountains, Somebody stole my gal, Let's walk that-a-way (with Doris Day), If you believe, Hey there, Song of the dreamer and Look homeward angel. It is reasonable to assume he would have had many more hits if record charts had started earlier. There were sheet music charts but I know nothing about them.

Johnnie recorded duets with others, most notably Doris Day, and you will find several of these duets on this collection. You can hear Doris on Ma says Pa says, A full time job, Let's walk that-a-way and Candy lips.

Johnnie ended his British and American chart careers with I'll never fall in love again. Tom Jones later had a hit with a similarly titled song. Furthermore, it is also the title of a classic Bacharach-David song with which Bobbie Gentry topped the UK charts. All three songs are completely different despite their identical titles.

Johnnie was a huge international star in the fifties, yet is almost totally forgotten now. This triple CD (actually three individual CD's in a cardboard slipcase) is a reminder of his former status.

This album has some great beats with some very good MCs. This release is the one with the Taste of Chicago remix on it. Which has a very hot beat. I don't know why it wasn't on the re-release. If you like the Molemen you should also check Vakill's albums.

      5 out of 5 stars A HipHop Classic..........2005-10-13

Despite the fact that anybody that would charge more than the 25 Dollar value of this CD is obscenely ridiculous, this is a great CD with many quality songs by the Underground production team of The Molemen. The production is top-shelf and the artists are all well-known and respected Emcees (most of which are from Chicago)... if you don't have it already, it's a great addition to any Underground HipHop collection.
